Good read!.......2005-03-27
Racina's Snow Angel gave me an enjoyable day of reading. Found it very difficult to put this book down. Most definitely one of his better reads.
A Compelling, Super Suspenseful Snow Angel.......2004-02-08
Not an especial fan of the murder-mystery tale, I was surprised to find myself seduced completely and happily by Mr. Racina's bone-chilling story of human slaughter, life-shattering lies, no-holds-barred revenge, and nail-biting suspense. I was even more surprised to be captivated by "Snow Angel" because the first chapter reveals who done it, how, where, and why it was done. The author's years of grinding out network television soap operas has hone him into a master of the cliffhanger.
Start to finish, I was loathe to set down this totally compelling tome. Now I want to read everything that Racina has written.
Great book!!.......2002-04-10
I truly enjoyed this book. It was a fast read that I had a hard time putting down. I usually like to be suprised at who the killer is at the end, but that didn't really matter to me with this one. It was still a great story even though you know "who did it" from the beginning. I highly recommend it.
Shockingly Good.......2002-02-06
Books that I usually read are about how the murder was done and the whole "whodunit" thing, so this book surprised me because I didnt expect to like it that much beacuse I found out who the killer was in the beginning of the book. It is one of my favoite books now!! The whole book was great and I thought I knew what was going to happen and it was surprising to find out what was really going on. I would highly recommend this book!!
Thrilling Book I couldn't put down!.......2000-10-22
Snow Angel was such a good book, it was hard for me to put it down becuase I always wanted to know what would happen next. Some parts in the book like the death of Julia's Parents and the sex parts are a little to descriptive but it just shows you how sick Matt Hinson is. I liked it becuase some times your hateing the main characters and sometimes your cheering them on. Great book, highly recomended.
Book Description
Arthur Parkinson is fourteen during the dreary winter of 1974, experiencing the confusing pangs of adolescence and the pain of his parents' divorce. His world is shattered further by the sudden and violent death of Annie Marchand, his beloved former baby-sitter. Narrated by the adult Arthur, who continues to be haunted by memories, the story of a young man's unraveling family and the circumstances leading up to Annie's death forms the backdrop for an intimate tale of the price of love and belonging, told in a spare, translucent, and unexpectedly tender voice.

Aftermath of two failed marriages.......2005-12-02
"Snow Angels" focuses on the aftermath of two failed marriages. O'Nan has a very simple prose style, his characters are not very reflective, and he is certainly not interested in offering the reader his own analyses. Then, why did I like this book as much as I did? Like Mozart in his music, O'Nan chooses just the right details and dialogues, so that nothing is wasted, and a very interesting and moving work is created. On the one hand, the reader does not really get a complete picture of any of the characters. On the other hand, nothing is false, and the characters come alive through action and dialogue and thought, not by the author's sketch. While "ordinary people", they are complex and interesting, as are most real people. The structure of parallel stories adds weight to the novel, and there is a love affirming coda at the end.
TERRIBLE.......2005-08-03
This book is not worth anyone's time. It is page after page of O'Nan retelling the depressing lives of several completely dysfunctional people. I was required to read it for school -how terrible- and constantly found myself doing the math to figure out how many pages I had left. I have no sympathy for any of the pitiful characters- they are not worth my time. A waste.
Worth it's weight and its weight was heavy...........2003-12-31
Snow Angels was an unexpected and welcomed diversion, dense and thoughtful, heavy and sad, but always worth the read. Dismissing this book becauuse it packs a despairing wallop is wasteful; give yourself a little time to experience the saddness and you'll feel all the more human. Doesn't fall in my top ten, but maybe the top 25 of recent reads. A very worthwhile investment of time.
Mired in Sadness.......2003-10-25
Not only would I not recommend this book to anyone, I actually threw away my copy (hardcover!) rather than pass it on to someone else. I found the book totally depressing. I don't mind reading about the angst in people's lives, but find it totally depressing to read about lives totally devoid of all hope. It doesn't seem like anyone learned anything from the life events that would help them move on or become a better person. There is just utter sadness. Of course, if you liked Empire Falls you might like this one because I thought it was equally devoid of any positive feelings. Everyone was mired in sadness & hopelessness.
Influential Book.......2001-06-23
I first bought this book four years ago and have read it 5 times since. Haunting images, desperate characters. Although this book is about murder and divorce, there are no villans and no heros. This book made Stewart O'Nan my favorite author. Also check out THE SPEED QUEEN

Just Couldn't Get Into It.......2006-12-12
Libby Duclaux is a rich widow living in the Italian Alps after the death of her husband. Old friend Aaron Conrad is trying to get her to stop mourning and live again. He convinces her to return home to Washington State by telling her that her sister, who is having a high risk pregnancy, needs her help. Libby has no intention of staying long term, but Aaron is convinced he can change her mind and that he may be falling in love.
Even though we are told numerous times that Libby is a charatable, self-sacrafing person, she has a threadbare wardrobe because she gives so much money to orphans; she just came off as self-absorbed. Aaron is stock nice-guy, romantic lead. I did not realy believe thier chemestry or care for Libby. The secoundary characters are far more interesting and likeable. I am told they are featured in other Stella Cameron stories, hopefully those stories are more enjoyable.
Very disappointed.......2001-10-19
This was so disjointed...the story was hard to get into..the characters were not explored in any depth. Not a good example of Stella Cameron stories.

Book Description
Based on a true story, this gripping novel of crime and redemption covers the kidnapping of a young boy during the week before Christmas and the three detectives who lead the investigation—Ralph Kane, Isaiah Bell, and their boss, Inspector Roberta Easterly. Enraged and anguished by this savage act—which seems to have been motivated purely by greed—yet frustrated by the political maneuverings inside the police department, Kane and Bell must each confront personal and racial demons as they cross moral boundaries in order to chase down several leads from sources within the city's various criminal networks. As the tragic loss of the child brings the community to a standstill, it compels all involved, white and black, criminals and cops alike, to look for the remaining shred of goodness in their lives.

Gripping and Honest Page-Turner.......2007-05-13
The gritty story really moves along and is an attention grabber right from the start. The Snow Angel is one of those few books I found really hard to put down except when my eyes were closing by themselves late in the evening.
But the book works on more levels than just story. The characters are drawn so well that I never had the wonder 'why' they acted the way they did. That is a rarity - not that their actions were predictable, but rather after the fact I had the feeling that what they did was exactly what they would. These are not simple stick characters; they are people the reader gets to know for a brief time.
There is an overall portrait of the underbelly of a city with its intrigues and especially its interconnections of people good, bad, and the mix of good and bad that is so much of reality rather than just a story. The author clearly knows his stuff and knows how to deliver it to us.
Compelling Crime Drama.......2007-03-03
The advice most often given to those who want to write is "write about what you know". No one knows the fabric of Detroit, its police, its reporters and the cold and gritty bleakness of a Detroit winter than Mike Graham, ex Detroit cop and ex Detroit newsman.
A well crafted first novel with many twists inside the overall plot that smoothly and cleverly come together at the end. Crime, race relations and alcoholism are all treated with a fine hand. I can't wait for the next work by this author.
Crime. Christmas.Redemption........2007-02-17
In his novel, The Snow Angel, Michael Graham tells us a story about two hard-bitten detectives as they go about the grim business of solving the kidnapping and murder of a young boy--a crime made all the more horrifying because it takes place at Christmastime. The story is set in the gritty city of Detroit, a place Graham apparently knows well. We can almost feel and hear the crunch of rock salt and frozen slush under our feet as we follow the detectives trudging the streets in search of the killers. Graham draws on his experience as a cop and a crime reporter to write authentically in the language and jargon of police procedures, bureaucracy and politics. He knows his way around a police station. But Graham has more in mind than just a story of cops chasing bad guys. Instead, he uses a cast of supporting characters, everyday settings and the ordinary events of life to weave a convincing tale of a minor urban miracle. Michael Graham is a sharp writer. The Snow Angel deserves to be read.
The Real Thing.......2007-02-12
You've read Michael Connelly? Read Michael Graham. Set in Detroit, his story is driven by a narrative engine smoother and tougher than anything made in Motor City any more. Some novelists pray at the altar of Mammon and their books are the equivalent of a Chinese meal: half an hour after reading one you're hungry again. Mike Graham is different. Watch him strip away the layers of our national malady until officers Bell and Kane
confront the rotten core of its dualities, each man returning from the edge of his personal abyss with a life-affirming vision of a larger Truth.
Hard-boiled, wise, compassionate, Graham's novel is an enduring feast.
A NEW CHRISTMAS CAROL.......2007-02-09
Not only a great "police procedural" but a new and original Christmas fable as well, with deep redemption and hope couched in the perspective of the detective and criminal reporter past of the author. Once I got into the story, I couldn't put it down, and many times I laughed out loud as well as welled up with tears. A very rewarding reading experience. Check it out.

An artist finds healing in unexpected sources when she moves to a mountain cabin, grieving the deaths of her husband and son.
Customer Reviews:
Snow as a metaphor.......2006-08-26
I'm never blown away by a Melody Carlson novel, but this is one of her better books. The main character, Claire, is an artist grieving the loss of her husband and son. To escape the pain, she flees to a mountain cabin. She sees tracks in the woods and imagines that the footprints belong to her dead husband & son. Who those prints belong to, and what she learns about herself and her ability to move forward, is what drives the story. The ending is obvious, but tender nonetheless.
Wonderful story.......2003-02-26
It's a tender, amiable story of hope through despair. Even though it's a little forseeable (therefore only 4 stars), nevertheless it's written with a light hand, and a good sense of humour. It's very good entertainment in spite of the tragic story of the protagonist. Simply adorable and heartwarming.
Customer Reviews:
Really Excellent!!!.......2005-02-18
I really loved this book! Mary Balogh is a *master* of the short Regency romance and "Snow Angel" is a wonderful example of just how *good* such a story can be. Both the hero and heroine were imperfect but *vastly* likeable, the secondary characters were well-developed (one of them almost steals the book!), the story was well-written and wonderfully angsty (my favorite type!) and the sexual tension perfectly done.
Rosamund Hunter is a young widow, recently out of mourning for her much older husband. Traveling with her overbearing elder brother Dennis, Rosamund gets into an argument with him about a new suitor who he is promoting and walks away from his carriage in a huff just before a major snowstorm hits the area. When Dennis is delayed by an accident, Rosamund finds herself walking alone in a blizzard. Justin Halliday, the Earl of Wetherby, is traveling by in his carriage and sees her struggling in the cold; he offers her a ride and shelter from the storm. Rosamund accepts before she realizes that she will be *alone* with the very handsome Justin at his friend's hunting box for the duration of the storm.
Rosamund and Justin, wildly attracted to each other and thrown together in an isolated place for three days, eventually agree to have a brief affair. Rosamund's husband was a much older man and she is curious about passion with a younger man. Justin makes it clear from the onset that he is planning to get engaged in one more month (an arranged marriage) and he intends to be faithful to his betrothed--so their affair has no future. They share three magical days and then separate as the snow begins to melt to go on with their former lives.
Despite their best efforts, Justin and Rosamund find that they are unable to forget each other. They meet again by chance under the most awkward of circumstances (the houseparty to celebrate Justin's upcoming engagement) and try to deny their mutual attraction and avoid each other. But fate keeps throwing them together and they are unable to resist each other's company.
I loved the characters of both the hero and heroine--wonderful, but flawed people who give in to an irresistible impulse to become lovers and later find themselves struggling to act honorably and deny their seemingly impossible love. The secondary characters are also marvelously three-dimensional--especially Joshua and Annabelle, but even Rosamund's prosy suitor is given a heart. (In fact, Joshua is *such* a great character that he almost steals the book from Justin.)
My only complaint with this book is the same one that I had with Mary Balogh's "Tempting Harriet" (also a wonderful book!)--the hero throughout the book doggedly continues his courtship of the very eligible and unenthusiatic girl of his *mother's* dreams, while secretly eating his heart out over the heroine. His courtship goes past the point where he can honorably back out--so the happy ending depends on the bold action of others. I find this passive road to a happy end a little less than satisfying, but this is a minor quibble since the rest of the book is so good.
In summary, this is an excellent short Regency by Mary Balogh with a lively, attractive heroine and hero.
Highly recommended!
A Lover's Destiny. ** Grade: B+ ** .......2005-01-03
Fate connected two people, Fate severs two people, and Fate will intervene for two people.
The widow, Lady Rosamund Hunter, cannot believe her brother's plans for her future and she angrily responds. What right does her brother have to offer her hand in marriage? Rosa Hunter now finds herself trudging along an uninhabited, snow-covered country road.
He sees the walking figure, forsaken, along the icy roadside and immediately stops to offer his assistance. But during the next three, storm-enhanced days, Justin Halliday, the Earl of Wetherby will offer far more than mere assistance.
For three glorious days Rosa and Justin simply enjoy each other - personally. Both know the score. This will be a three-day love affair, a harmless liaison, a mutual enthusiastic encounter, which will and must end. Their plans sound so mature, so civilized, but Fate has its own plans.
Mary Balogh writes another interesting story. It is rare to discover a poorly conceived story from the Balogh pen. However, if there is a complaint with SNOW ANGEL, it may exist in the shortness of the stirring love affair and in the length taken before the two lovers are finally appeased.
A Signet Regency Romance with a publish date of June, 1991. Sadly, a book which is no longer published and is available only through the secondary market. Grade: B+

Book Description
Jane Melrose appeared to have it all. She was still young, smart, good-looking, and had the makings of a good career. However, her biological clock was ticking and she always dreamed of having a large family. She'd never been married, but she knew the exact makeup of her ideal man. As a devout spiritual woman, she remained steadfast to her integrity and ideals- willing to wait for the right partner. Robert McWilliams, a dynamic attorney, was the answer to Jane's dreams. A relationship with Bob began to develop and he was everything Jane had imagined. The only problem was that she couldn't stop thinking about John Avery, the ordinary floral nursery employee who had mysteriously entered her life. Angels in The Snow is a spiritual romance novel. The story transcends the typical romance, though. Author Whitney Clayton sets the focus of life and love not on the expectation of absolute happiness, but rather in what we teach our children everyday. Get in touch with your serenity as you become involved in Jane's journey. Possibly you will laugh, surely you will cry, but hopefully you will be inspired.

Angels in the Snow.......2000-07-09
Whitney Clayton gave us a wonderful gift when he wrote this charming and satisfying book. It is the deceptively simple tale of a man who believes he is fated to meet and love a particular young woman. The rich and full details of these quirky folks are real. Jane Melrose and John Avery will live for you. And, you will know them well. The author richly details his story without wasting your time. You will fall in love with the characters as they teach you about appearances, truth, and life. They will not be ephemeral "Angels in the Snow" for you. They will live in your hearts, as they surely did for Whitney Clayton.
Book Description
When Noah Wesley heard the faint sound outside the door of his remote Alaskan mountain cabin during a violent nighttime blizzard, it was no less than the voice of God that urged him to take a closer look, soon to discover his snow angel.
Unconscious and more than half frozen to death, her name, as Noah would later learn after boldly saving her life, was Elizabeth, a beautiful young woman, fragile yet fierce, and intent on discovering gold like so many others in that region during the late 1800s.
But why Elizabeth was so drawn to the gold, and why she would chase it even through a pounding storm that no man would dare face, was a secret to be shared with no one else, not even at the inviation of Noah's d eep blue trusting eyes.
First time novelist Jamie Carie pens a can't-put-down debut in Snow Angel, a masterfully romantic story wherein cold and lonely hearts risk everything to be forever warmed.

Quality Read.......2007-10-17
I enjoyed Snow Angel - it was a good read and fun to curl up with in front of my fireplace with a comforter and a cup of tea. The story seemed a bit anti-climactic to me at the end because it had felt like it ended a few chapters before and then the author had to quickly wrap up the loose ends, but all in all I enjoyed it and will keep this book on my personal bookshelf
An author to watch!.......2007-10-08
Elizabeth Smith doesn't know where she has come from but her future goals are clear ~ she just didn't count on a storm interfering with those plans.
Noah Wesley loves the solitary wilderness that is his Alaskan home but when God calls him to open his front door during a fearsome blizzard, the unconscious woman lying at his feet unlocks a chamber in his heart previously undiscovered.
While drawn to each other during Elizabeth's recovery, Noah knows he can't compete with her yearning to stake a claim in the Yukon gold fields. Noah fears for Elizabeth's safety as she pursues a perilous course but it is a more evil threat from her past that may haunt them forever.
Snow Angel captured my imagination from beginning to end. It is an epic romance with fast paced intrigue and an emotional intensity rarely achieved. Jamie Carie's gifted characterisation is of a calibre expected from a multi-published author not one writing her debut novel. Noah and Elizabeth have enormous depth, with appealing attributes alongside tangible weaknesses that evoke an emotional and compassionate response. Jamie does not shy away from portraying genuine romantic tension and desire and the dilemma that poses for Noah, a man of faith and integrity experiencing passion and attraction.
Jamie's prose is elegant yet accessible, placing the reader amongst the icy shards of the blizzard and the muck and deprivation of the gold fields. Faith and belief is interwoven seamlessly, gently revealing the loving heart of God amidst the heartache of loss and loneliness. Prepare to be swept away by this powerful tale of love and sacrifice and become a devoted reader of anything Jamie Carie pens in the future.
Carie's 'Snow Angel' is riveting.......2007-08-26
Jamie Carie's debut novel, "Snow Angel," gripped me from the beginning and wouldn't let go. This romance/adventure story includes Christian themes as well as suspense and history. From the first page, the characters and their struggles drew me in.
Elizabeth, Noah and Jane seem real. Their personalities are well-developed; they have strengths and weaknesses. They're not perfect, but regular people trying to make the right decisions. Sometimes they succeed. Sometimes they fail. Joining each of them on the journey made me want to speak aloud to them, to tell them what's coming next, or to tell them what they don't know that might prompt a different decision. Also watch for Will and Cara Collins, Charlie McKay, Joe Brandon and William Cleary, among others.
Their story takes place, for the most part, in rugged Alaska during the 1897 gold rush. The historical details and facts about life in that time and place give this book an educational aspect, even for readers whose main purpose is simply to escape into another world. The historical details blend in with the story and don't overpower the plot or frustrate the reader who wants action instead of dominating description.
Their struggles: a toddler taken from her mother, given away by her grandfather - location unknown; a woman seeking gold and freedom, half frozen at a man's door - someone seeks her for dishonorable reasons; a man warms to his new companion, just as she decides to pursue her dream.
This book is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Others, like me, may find they don't want to put it down until the last page is read.
Adventure and romance in the Yukon territory.......2007-08-17
Snow Angel is a delight to read. It begins with a flashback scene that is heart-wrenching and sets the scene for the main character's fierce determination and drive. Elizabeth has a firey spirit which is a good match for Noah's cooling presence. The descriptive details of the untamed Alaskan territory and the trek through the gold fields with a mis-matched group of miners and prospectors is engaging.
An Adventurous Romance.......2007-08-17
Part Christian romance, part historical adventure novel, Snow Angel features an indomitable female protagonist in the orphaned Elizabeth Greyson and a worthy love interest in mountain man Noah Wesley. These two forces of nature collide when Elizabeth collapses on the doorstep of Noah's remote cabin during an Alaskan blizzard. While reviving her, Noah becomes entranced by the unlikely contrast between this beautiful young woman's delicate appearance and her hardy, adventure-seeking constitution.
As Elizabeth regains her strength, however, Noah finds his romantic intentions spurned by Elizabeth's desire to shield him from her spotty past and pursue her dream of striking it rich as a gold prospector. The suspense mounts as Noah sets off across the Alaskan tundra in desperate pursuit of Elizabeth, who herself is being pursued by an unsavory figure from her past.
Set during the Yukon Gold Rush at the turn of the century, author Jamie Carie evokes a strong sense of time and place with her poetic writing style and discriminating use of historical details. The romantic tension between Noah, who represents the Christian ideal, and Elizabeth, whose tragic circumstances have led her morally astray, is both powerful and convincing. Carie illuminates various facets of Elizabeth's hard-luck story through several point-of-view characters, including Elizabeth's mother who has spent years searching for the daughter who was taken from her at age two.
While melodramatic in places and lacking the heated passion some romance readers may expect, Snow Angel will resonate with fans of religious-based love stories and historical fiction.
