Book Description
Jason Carrillo, the best-looking athlete in school, has had his eyes on the prize from day one: a scholarship for college.
But then his eyes turn to love -- and Kyle.
Kyle Meeks, swim team star and all-around good guy, is finally in the relationship he wanted. Being in love feels so good, in fact, that he can't imagine giving it up to go to Princeton.
Something he's worked for his entire life.
Nelson Glassman, outgoing and defiant, might be HIV positive. Jeremy, the boy he loves, is HIV positive. Although Nelson fears testing positive, if he is infected Jeremy might stop protecting him and pushing him away.
They can be together.
High shool's almost over. Graduation is ahead. Life's a bowl of cherries, right? Right...

keep reading.......2007-09-11
This book started off slow really. Then it got really good in the end. I was happy I kept reading it because the ending was so good. Jason comes out to his team and the school loves him for it while Kyle's life in school is the total opposite from his boyfriends. Nelson is thankfully over Kyle and he has a boyfriend. But as we all know, life isn't perfect now that you have a boyfriend. It was really good just not as good as the first book.
At last! Quality gay fiction for teens!.......2007-04-06
Finally, a story about gay teens, while told with honesty and realism, where no one dies. Author Sanchez has a great feel for teen language and motivation. He is also spot-on with the parental and other adult characterizations. The plot teaches without being pedantic and without ceasing to entertain. There's also a couple of scenes that steam lightly with the mildest, yet warm eroticism, but it's certainly not gratuituous in the least and written tastefully and without prurience. As a former young adult librarian, I've so often needed gay fiction to recommend to struggling teens for a bit of bibliotherapy. Until Sanchez, there's been a definite dearth of such literature. Looking forward to reading his other books and highly recommend this one. The eye candy covers are fun, but the content is far more than fluffy hotties looking bored.
Let It All Out!!.......2006-12-07
Rainbow High is a very inspirational book. Especially for the Lesbians, Bisexuals, Gays and Queers. An inspiration because alot of homosexuals are very uncomfortable with the way they look and how they would fit in with the world, and why won't the world except them for who they are. Sanchez shows all of the difficulties and hardships homosexuals endure in the "normal" community, including high school. He also expresses how other people react to their homosexuality, including there very own relatives.
I love this book because it inspires me personally.Alot of people dont except me for being bisexual and its hard. But as long as i stand up for myself and not let anyone control what I want to do and be in life, i'll have alot of respect after words.
Not bad but i wouldn't recommend it.......2006-01-08
Primarily and most improtantly, homophobia wasn't not the true reason behind shaping my ture opinion about this book which i coudn't bear reading till the end. Although Alex Sanchez does a great job in revealing an introspection of the three protagonists Nelson, Jason, and Kyle including their feelings about their homosexuality and their caring about the view from which society would regard them. Instead of bringing forth the disliked subject of homophobia in American society, Sanchez unreasonably talks sublty about this important issues by narrating the story of Jason's coming out. It is surprrising and hardly believable to accept the courtesy by which Jason's schoolmates regarded his coming out and that their role-model is homosexual. In actual life, it's rarely if never oucurring that a large amount of people would easily accept among them someone who according to religion and common rule, is somehow different. In addition to the unusal attitude of the town people, Jason't being interviewed and acclaimed by many for having the courage of coming out is an extreme prasing of being homosexual. Again, i am not a homophobe and i can prove this by expressing how much i liked Rainbow Boys in talking about a negative thing (homophobia) in American history and in it's valuale message to encourage youth in general and homosexuals in particular to accept their fauts and face society.
There Are No Surprises Here.......2005-09-12
Nelson, Kyle and Jason whom we met in RAINBOW BOYS are back again, pretty much as we knew them. Well, Nelson has gone from dying his hair lemon-lime to "flame-blue," an appropriate color since he is certainly the flamer of these three. He is the outrageous one who never had a chance of being in anybody's closet, even if he had wanted to. Kyle is still the shy one on the swim team who can "pass" if left alone. Jason, of course, is the high school jock equally attractive to both young men and women.
There are no surprises here. We pretty much know where Mr. Sanchez is going with his plot. Will Nelson break up with his new boyfriend Jason because he is HIV positive? Will Kyle go to Princeton rather than to a lesser university even though it means he will be separated from Jason? Will Jason come out to the other members of the basketball team? If he does, will he lose his college scholarship? Will they all attend the senior prom?
What this novel does extremely well is provide a story that gay teenagers can read and know that they are not alone, particularly those who live in out-of-the-way towns and attend small high schools. It is comforting to learn that RAINBOW BOYS was an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults.
As in the previous novel, there is information about all kinds of organizations and help for gay teenagers at the end of this novel.

Book Description
Jason Carrillo is a jock with a steady girlfriend, but he can't stop dreaming about sex...with other guys.
Kyle Meeks doesn't look gay, but he is. And he hopes he never has to tell anyone -- especially his parents.
Nelson Glassman is "out" to the entire world, but he can't tell the boy he loves that he wants to be more than just friends.
Three teenage boys, coming of age and out of the closet. In a revealing debut novel that percolates with passion and wit, Alex Sanchez follows these very different high-school seniors as their struggles with sexuality and intolerance draw them into a triangle of love, betrayal, and ultimately, friendship.

Bravo.......2007-08-29
From the first to last page I was hooked on this book. It was so good that I am thrilled that the stories continue. Alex you have a new fan!
Loved It.......2007-08-01
I probably do not fit this books demographic!
I'm a 22 year old straight female.
But I LOVED this book, and the other two that follow it. I rarely read at all, but I couldn't put it down, I read it non stop until it was finished.
I felt like the characters were my close friends. The great part about this book and the other two is that it gets right to the action. None of that boring prose about trees and leaves blowing in the wind. Every page is interesting, and it feels like an original story, unlike all the hetero fiction that is out there for teens to read. Did I mention again that I'm straight?
Nelson, Jason and Kyle are remarkable - particularly Nelson, he comes out with some great lines and is a fantastic character.
To be honest, this book rather made me WISH I knew these kids. And that I was a guy. And gay. (Nelson owns my heart)
Kudos to Alex! Excellent book!
Rainbow Boys.......2007-05-09
I loved the book. It could really help young boys who are sturggling with their sexuality. The story line keeps you involved and the context of the story is very appropriate. The book is page turner because it moves at a fast pace and the story line is interesting, your always wondering whats going to happen next. Not only is the context of what is going on with the boys helpful to young adults, but also the family dynamics presented in this book can also have many children relating to these boys struggles.
A must read!.......2007-05-04
This realistic contemporary literature novel covers many social and emotional issues faced by high school students. The problems and solutions were realistic and practical. Fear of rejection, sense of belonging, and the need to fit in were just a few of the underlying themes that were presented throughout the novel. It is difficult for all high school students to understand who they are and everyone fights with trying to fit in, having the right clothing or hairstyle, listening to the right music, saying the right things. But for high school minorities, these challenges are only more obvious as they face so many different difficulties. The characters were well developed and ever changing, allowing the reader to feel as though they really know Nelson, Kyle, and Jason first hand. Sanchez does a great job of producing well-rounded characters with realistic problems. He leads the reader to want to continue reading, waiting to see what will happen to the boys next. The book ends rather abruptly, with many issues yet to be resolved. However, this is Sanchez's way of making you read the sequels, Rainbow High and Rainbow Road. As a reader, I definitely want to go and read the next two books that follow the characters through the remainder of high school and on to their lives after graduation. As frustrating as it was to have the book end without answering all the questions, it is a good author who leaves you wanting more and can get a reader so excited that they can't wait for the next story. A true eye opener of a book, dealing with many adolescent issues. However, not appropriate to be used as a whole class novel even in late high school. There are some very graphic scenes and language that is quite controversial. I think it is a great book that teachers, social workers, and parents should be aware of and it should be available to students on an individual basis. Students who might be part of a gay-straight alliance or who personally seek help and understanding of their own confusions will learn a lot and be able to connect to Sanchez's work.
A Must-Read!.......2007-04-04
First, I am very picky when it comes to books that I select to read. As a special education teacher and doctoral candidate, there just is little time for "fun reading"
When a former student came out to me, I took her to the local GLCC (I am also on its board of trustees). I took her to our library section to see if there was anything she would be interested in. Anything that might make her feel the "normality" of being Gay that I struggled with for so many years. At one time, I was even on the verge of suicide.
Alex Sanchez's books had been recommended to me. I think I even purchased a few -- but they got lost somewhere in my book avalanche. I DO NOT regret brining this book home. It is well written. It shifts from character to character delicately telling their stories. Mr. Sanchez could not have chosen three better characters for his plot. You have the very open Nelson, the "I'm gay but I don't want everyone to know it, yet" Kyle....and my favorite, the jock....Jason. Each has separate struggles. But they help each other through the process.
I wish this book had been written all those years ago when I was afraid and alone. I am ordering the series....and anything else that Mr. Sanchez writes!
As the sponsor of a Gay Straight Alliance, I think this is a great addition to any collection.*
* I do have to admit that they use the "F" word a few times more than I am used to .. but I alo teach high school! But, I realize that that is the way kids talk...and if it helps someone...Hurray!
Customer Reviews:
Good sci-fi with a theological angle .......2006-08-22
This novel is the introductory portion of the trilogy called the "Quintara Marathon" and should be read together with "The Run of Chaos Keep" followed by "The Ninety Trillion Fausts." To get the full impact, read all three together in sequence.
The primary antagonists are the Quintara, an ancient highly advanced race resembling every human legend of demons. They were defeated a long time ago by three factions of equally advanced empires: fanatics led by giant brains (Mizlaplan), post modern supra-plantetary capitalists led by robots (Exchange), and amoral warlords led by body snatchers (Mychol).
Each empire fields a team to investigate Quintara activity. The story follows the human characters on each team.
The science fiction makes use of higher-dimensional geometric figures, tieing that into ancient symbols like pentragrams and the Seal of Solomon. Additional tension and conflict is present in the viewpoint conflicts between each empire, and the corruption inherent in each. The characters at times wonder if the Quintara can be worse than their own societies.
The books themselves are well paced with interesting characters and lots of action. Don't expect deep philosophy, but do expect a good entertaining story. If the religious angle offends you, why are you reading science fiction in the first place?
If you are totally new to Chalker, his Flux & Anchor novels and first two Wellworld Trilogies are better stories. The Quintara Marathon is solid, but not his best work.
Decent Action and plenty to chew on- but ultimately shallow.......2001-07-31
As the characters spiral their way down through the depths of hell and toward the ultimate destiny of a fragmented humanity, so we as readers spiral through revelation and enjoyable action sequences in an exciting mix of horror, sci-fi, and myth. It tells the tale of three teams from rival empires. Their quest is one of discovery- to uncover the secrets of a race of Demons. Their only clues along this journey are the myths and beliefs of their own cultures that must have experienced the Demons first hand thousands of years in the past. The twist of this story is it's challenge of religious beliefs by the standards of science fiction. While Chalker strips away shrouds of biblical dogma, he quickly replaces it with sci-fi rationale. While this does have the effect of revealing the wizard as an old man behind a curtain, it validates the underpinnings of religion by giving substance to human myths. Whether you are deeply religious, anti-religious or just plain neutral on the subject like me, I think you'll enjoy the author's attempt to create a fantasy world where the tensions between science and theology can be bridged with rational observation. As we grow up in a society whose cultural beliefs are constantly challenged by the rigor of science, this book gives us a chance to look back to Sunday School and ask, "What if science could validate and explain all that bible mumbo-jumbo?" Such questions are answered with the help of characters representing three distinct viewpoints- Theological fanatics (The Mizlaplan Team), Capitalist businessmen (Exchange), and amoral opportunists (Mychol). Each viewpoint is further enhanced by each team-member who give the extreme, moderate, and even doubter's mindsets to each philosophy. This spectrum of viewpoints gives the reader a whole set of opinions to take with the plotline.
Unfortunately, this book cannot survive on ideas alone. His Empires, though intriguing, are one dimensional and thus unbelievable. ...P>All that having been said, the series is a quick read sure to entertain you. If you go into it expecting depth, you'll be disappointed. But if you expect something to keep you turning pages while waiting for your flight to dock, it is right up your alley.
...it's a very good book...but..........2000-10-05
Don't get me wrong...the book was well writen and all... there is alot of story between the different empires of the book and the character had...some life in them. It the only thing wrong was the way some of the story...like timing... could have been way better writen... like the polt twists. Some of them were way to predictable. But this is a very small problem that most people will over look...a very good book.
Only Mr. Chalker can take 3 ideas and give them one goal!.......1999-05-17
Mr.Chalker's story is a winner! Demons at Rainbow Bridge is a story about three empires with three different philosophy. Until they meet the Demons at Rainbow bridge and its crash and burn from on in.
Good introduction.......1999-03-13
Though this book introduces some facinating characters from various species of space-faring races (something Chalker is excellent at as shown in his Well World series) the more than 300 pages is only a prelude setting the stage for the other two books in the series. As an introduction it is good but can not by any means stand on its own as a novel. If the publisher will not do a full 900 page book to contain the whole story the cover should warn the reader that this is only an overture in no uncertain terms. This is not to diminish Chalker but only the publishing mentality.
Book Description
This is the official U.S. Army report of the terrible conditions at the Dachau concentration camp in Nazi Germany and of the camp's liberation on April 29, 1945. It was written within days of that liberation and contains valuable photographs, sketches and first-person accounts. It includes an interview with a woman who claimed to have been Rudof Hoess's mistress at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Copies of the original report are hard to obtain. This is the first time it has been published as a book.
Customer Reviews:
SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2005-04-29
In defense of whoever wrote this report in 1945 they probably were not professional writers nor did they expect their report to be offered to the public 50+ years later. For that reason I gave the book two stars instead of one. This is a very dry, unemotional, bland report that is rather disjointed.
Although I did not expect a professional effort I had expected something substantive -- maybe more along the lines of a description of the advance upon the town of Dachau, the capturing of the camp, the surrender of the German guards left behind, the actions taken against the Germans (including summary executions and reprisals by the inmates), and the liberation of the survivors. Instead it is a very dry attempt to explain the camp organization and what occurred there.
The report was written only days after the liberation and contributes nothing to an understanding about the camp, the inmates, the guards, and the activities surrounding the liberation of the camp. Its historical value is only in when it was written and from where. Otherwise there was no value to this book.
Badly edited - for historians only.......2005-04-18
This booklet is a reprint of the various short reports that the American Army sent home on Dachau concentration camp when they liberated it in 1945. As a source, it is very interesting; how did the liberators react to the camp they found? What was their impression of the Germans who lived in the town of Dachau?
As can be expected from a report written early after the war, there are many mistakes in the reports. This would not have been a problem if the book had been properly edited. Unfortunately, someone who is not very knowledgeable on the subject edited the book. There are many mistakes in the German quotations. The camp is also wrongly referred to as a death camp. Death camps differed from concentration camps in that people did not work there, but were killed immediately after arrival. These camps only existed in Poland. The Dachau gas chamber is described but it is now widely accepted that this chamber was hardly (possibly never) used to kill people. That the editor fails to point this out is not just negligent, but it also gives ammunition to the so-called revisionists or holocaust deniers who claim that gas chambers were never in use. They often use Dachau as an illustration of the "false" impression that there were gas chambers.
There are other illustrations of the lack of insight of the editor. For instance, the report of the former mistress of Rudolf Hoess camp commandant of Auschwitz. Her name is only given abbreviated, while there are other reports on her, giving her name as Eleonore Hodys, for instance Hermann Langbeins book People in Auschwitz. This book also offers more information on the affair. Without a further introduction, Hodys' testimony makes little sense at it is on Auschwitz concentration camp.
For the professional historian it can be a valuable source of information, but general readers should avoid this book. It is a bad introduction on concentration camps for the non-professional. Many other books offer more accurate information on Dachau and other concentration camps.
Essential Reading.......2004-06-10
For serious students of the Holocaust, this report of the United States' Seventh Army staff should be required reading. The chilling diary that is paired with the report lends further evidence to the degradation and beasitality of the Nazi regime as played out in suburban Munich.
Bad Report.......2003-05-03
Disappointed and just a little bit mad, that sums up my feelings after reading this book. I had high hopes for the book given that I had read a similar book on another camp that was very good. This book, on the other hand just was very lacking in detail and organization. The book is the 7th Army's report on the camp issued shortly after the liberation. The book tried to cover the set up of the camp, what took place in the camp, the make up of the SS staff, and a few personnel accounts of time in camp. The authors just did none of these items very well. The book was poorly organized. The coverage of the camp set up and running of the camp was far too short and really lacked in detail. And the personnel accounts were mainly of people in somewhat privileged support roles quite unlike the average prisoner.
I wish this was the extent of my issues with the book, but on top of all this the writing just was not that good. The writing was rather jumpy and not very challenging. It was like reading a bad high school history report. Overall I would pass on this book. There are far too many quality books covering this topic to spend any time on this one. The only reason I am giving the book a two is I somehow feel guilty about giving a very low rating to book dealing with such a horrible event.

Book Description
Mars starts out as a battlefield, but soon both armies find themselves united against a charismatic dictator of all Earth, who is demanding that they return or be destroyed. Their only hope is to turn Mars into a new home, which they do, with the aid of some ancient “caretakers” of the planet.
Customer Reviews:
I'm a fan of Robert Forward. . ........2001-10-16
. . .really I am -- but in this book, Forward concentrates almost exclusively on what is the weakest element of his writing -- character development -- and neglects the strongest element of his writing -- serious "hard-science" fiction.
I've admitted in other reviews (see "Saturn Rukh") that I don't read Forward for character development or depth. Good thing too! The by-play between the twin brothers in this novel is unbelievable at best; the transformation from General to religious dictator is ridiculous; and the alien robots which suddenly turn up to save the day? Come on, guys!
Dr. Forward -- PLEASE keep writing your "hard science". It's wonderful and thought-provoking in its own right. But forgive me for negative rating here. The downsides of "Martian Rainbow" far outweighed the upside.
Characters are not believable..........2001-02-12
The books foundation lies in the similarities and differences of the two main characters, Alex the General und Gus the Scientist. The other point to start from is the effort to make Mars a planet to live on. Both plots are being treated too black and white (the schism between Alex and Gus and how they are drifting more and more apart is not handled well) or solved with a deus-ex-machina solution. The plot itself could have been made into a complete trilogy (Step 1: Conquer Mars, Step 2: Build Mars, Step 3: Save Earth...) with enough emphasis on the different characters.
On the positive side: I was captured by the principles of making Mars a habitable planet. This kind of situation suits well with Robert Forward, only his characters are not believable, and therefore not interesting enough to bring life into this book.
A good beach read but not his best work.......2000-04-18
This book was good but not great. The Mars angle is very interesting and his science is terrific as always. His characterization and plotting were on the thin side. If you like Forward's other books you will like this one, although Dragon's Egg/Starquake and the Rocheworld series are more interesting in terms of both their science and plot/character development in my opinion. Maybe that's because the other books include alien races, which Forward seems to do better than human characters.

Customer Reviews:
Is it just coincidence that I read this book?.......2001-08-07
Get to know Greg the hero of this book and learn about his life, his world and his cats. The story progresses through a string of coincidences, but, as the character, Greg, says, "I don't believe in coincidence." A good-intentioned man who has seen much struggle and consequence is suddenly gifted with amazing ability. How does one's past influence what one does once gifted? Whom does one share this knowledge with?
It's a page-turner that is thought-provoking at the same time. I took it to the beach and couldn't put it down.
Prismatic Delight For All People!.......2001-06-20
This is a fantastic book, featuring interesting, and intriguing, gay/lesbian characters, especially the main "hero" Greg. The chapters are short, and easy to read, though the writer has written the novel in "present tense" (which was a little off-putting in the beginning), the story flows very well, and figuratively swallows you in the story....
A good start.......2001-06-17
This was a good start to the series. I enjoyed how the story developed and liked the characterizations a lot. It was interesting how the main character, Greg, became interested in a group of pagans and how that led to his being endowed with a special power. I enjoyed his searching for and eventually finding his perfect mate. There is a subtle action plot of defeating a villain within the military before he can set off some bombs - but the interaction of the characters is the more prominent point of this getting to know the characters story.
