Book Description

In a compelling exploration of all things female, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride celebrates the defining connections among women and honors their differences. Each chapter reveals the actions through which a woman connects with herself, with her family, with members of her community, and with other women—from quinceañera parties commemorating a Hispanic girl turning 15, to pre-wedding henna ceremonies in the Middle East, where the hands and feet of the bride and her party are lavishly painted for her special day. Readers also will learn about such American traditions as the debutante ball, as well as the coming of age rituals of Mende girls in Sierra Leone. Gorgeous photographs from the National Geographic archive portray these women and their customs across time and around the world.

Remarkable stories and anecdotes from anthropologist Joanne Eicher complement the profiles written by Lisa Ling, who as host of the weekly television program National Geographic Explorer, has traveled the world, observing and documenting rituals both ancient and emerging, from her exceptional perspective as a journalist.

Together these accomplished authors provide a fascinating look at the historical, cultural, emotional, and personal impact of women's rituals and ritual practices. Provoking a range of emotions—reverence, sadness, joy, and shock—Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride puts women in perspective in the modern world, in multiple situations and on all levels.

3 out of 5 stars Anthropology vs. insight.......2007-07-24

This is more of a pretty anthropological book than an essay on the power or inner meaning of world rituals of womanhood.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting look at women around the world.......2006-12-12

I wanted this book for years because it was right up my alley-- I'd loved both the "Material World" books and "Hungry Planet" and anything full of photos that relates to cultural anthropology. I bought it used from an Amazon seller, and definitely enjoyed it. However, I have to say, I ended up glad I didn't pay $23 for it (the Amazon list price for a new copy). It's smaller than the other culture/photo books I own, and less meaty in terms of content. A lot of the photo portraits have quotes superimposed on them that detract from the images, to me. For example, there is a portrait of a Japanese bride sitting in a small room, being viewed by the villagers through a window, with the quote, "A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space. -- Gloria Steinem." So unlike Annie Leibovitz's "Women," in which the photos are presented without comment, in this book many of the photos are literally stamped with someone else's views on the politics of gender. Coming from National Geographic, that surprised me. It also made me wonder how thoughtfully the quotes were chosen when they actually include the anonymous quote, "Chance made us sisters, hearts made us friends." That's the sort of thing you stamp on a magnet in Girl Scouts.

On the upside, though, there are many unique images in this book-- lots of photos that create insights into other cultures, which you would otherwise never see. To me, the book is worth owning just for those gorgeous and interesting photos. If you're looking for depth of content about "rituals of womanhood," however, you may want to look elsewhere. The text glosses over the subject, covering rituals that sound fascinating in two or three sentences, then moving on. Basically it's a long general essay. There's more depth to "Women in the Material World" by d'Aluisio, and less judgment in "Women" by Leibovitz. But if you're a fan of this type of book, this one makes for good general reading.

1 out of 5 stars I thought they were new...........2006-11-11

The covers were shop worn and some of the pages were bent, worn and creased where people had flipped through the pages...they were supposed to be gifts....completely unaacceptable - had to buy substitutes.

5 out of 5 stars Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood.......2006-01-15

I bought this book as a gift for my new daughter-in-law so I didn't read the whole book before sending if off for Christmas. But, I did look through it and thought it was beautifully arranged and very thoughtfully conceived. It certainly reflected the many ways women are connected throughout this world.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Lynne Graham for my collection!.......2006-07-06

Lynne Graham never disappoints. She's my favorite Presents author because she delivers the goods every time. The sexy, rich tycoons and beautiful heroines jump off the page. Her storylines and dialogue keep you riveted. Ms. Graham does two things I really love: she often gives you a glimpse of what is going on in the male character's head and she infuses her stories with humorous/outrageous dialogue. The Presents line needs more authors like her. Snap up her books!

5 out of 5 stars A good read.......2003-09-14

Very good read and interesting story line. The best thing about this book is that it is one of a three part series 'sister brides'. If you enjoyed An Arabian Marriage , Heiress Bride this is the middle book of the series. I qiute enjoyed reading all of them.

5 out of 5 stars wow, hot book.......2003-07-03

I loved this book and I also highly recommend it's sequal THE HEIRESS BRIDE which was also very very good.

The heroines in both stories are very strong and survivors. They both end up with rich powerful men who although are ultra alpha and of course who can be real cads in the beggining of the story, they more than make it up in the end by becoming wonderful and loving husbands. I am a Lynne Grahm addict, I can't get enough of her stories and these 2 books are 2 of my favorites by her.

4 out of 5 stars Lynne does it again........2002-11-18

Ms. Lynne always gives a good conflict. Good story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!!!.......2006-01-07

This is an excellent read and I could recommend it to anyone, the stories are good and very well written.
4 romances in the same book I had to get it and haven't regretted it for a moment. I never seem to be able to get enough books to read and therefore books I don't really like, I soon get to really hate. This was not one of those books.
I suggest you buy this too.

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2005-09-17

San Francisco: 4 Romances Blossom by the City by the Bay is a compilation of four short stories: Grace in Action, Landlord Takes a Bride, Meet My Sister Tess, and Unbreakable Hope. The stories were written from 1999 to 2003, and all of them are very Christian in theme and writing. The first story, Grace in Action, is about a fireman and a very poor woman and her child. The fireman befriends the woman and begins to date her, much to the sadness of his girlfriend Emily. In fact, Emily shows up in the last story, Unbreakable Hope. The first and last stories are a slight continuation of one another and have characters that overlap. The best story, in my opinion, was The Landlord takes a Bride - both the male and female characters were strongly written, and the emphasis on church, God, and Christianity was less intense. The weakest story was Meet My Sister, Tess; it is about an adult female taking care of her disabled adult brother, and not being able to function independently of a man. Because Tess is so poor and her brother is disabled, the references to God were all over the place - it was actually very tedious to read through and I was just wanting it to end. This writer is not particularly good; the stories are about 50-75 pages each but are not intense enough to grab your attention and make you want to continue reading. The setting of San Francisco played a very minor role in the book, and the cover gives the impression that the stories will pay tribute to the city. They didn't; the author mentioned very few places in the city and it wasn't exploited at all. It's a shame, because perhaps the book would have been better with more focus on the setting and less on God and Christianity. I would definitely skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Officially the best Charmed book ever!!!! *bows to Elizabeth Lenhard*.......2005-10-13

As far as I'm concerned, ALL other good Charmed books (The Queen's Curse, Whisper's from the past, Dark Vengeance, Mystic Knoll, Inherit the witch, Something Wiccan [just to name a few]) are small potatoes in comparison to this superbly penned Charmed book!!! NO other Charmed novel could possibly be better than Soul Of The Bride!!! Elizabeth's work here, is a masterpiece!!!!

What makes this story stand out from the other Charmed books is her impeccable blend of Greek Mythology and the Charmed ones tale aptly blended in. She mixed the two geneologies flawlessly, very well blended, I should add. Every single tiny detail added in is beneficial for the Charmed ones, and that's what stands out in this book. Alot! For example, the part where Piper takes a quick glance at Prue and realizes that she is still wearing Piper's necklace, makes Piper remember that she had to pay Charon the fee to take them over to the other side of River Acheron, which is taking the letter opener and mother-of-pearl inkwell, just in case. Turns out that the letter opener is useful in impaling the Sirens!!!

I'm not going to reveal details of the story, but I guarantee, whether or not you know about Greek Mythology, you will definitely enjoy this story. Soul Of The Bride is a must-have for all Charmed fans!!!!!! My fave bit is when Phoebe is determined not to give up and succumb to the tasty grub kept in Hades, only to realize they are tainted to make people an empty-headed party animal. Also, all 3 sisters had a vital part to play, and with their team work, girly (and sisterly) support, all the loose knots are tied, the i's are dotted and its a happy ending for them.

My only thumbs-down about this story is just that its seems like a pretty huge coincidence that Nikos had known about Prue's photo shoot and sent Mitchell to make sure Prue's topic is on Victorian Portraiture, using Greek Mythology, which then lures Phoebe to Hades. In the Charmed Universe, coincidence is extremely rare, unless Nikos had known it all along, and places a spell on the them to find out.

But other than that, it is 100% recommeded, you WILL love it, like I did!!!
I paid $9 for this book and every single cent was worth it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs WAAAY up for Miss Lenhard!! *G*.......2005-06-23

This one of the best Charmed books ever written. I loved the combination of Greek Mythology and Charmed. Unlike the 'Oh My Goddess' episodes, this book blends both genres together effortlessly. The writing is top-notch... it really pulls you into what's going on. I had a hard time putting this book down (finished it in a couple days.. even with work).

HIGHLY recommend this to Charmed fans. You won't be disappointed :).

back cover: When Crown Prince Jaspar al-Husayn bursts into Fredrica`s life, she is struck by his arrogance and sensuality. Jaspar has come to take his nephew, Ben, back to his homeland. But Freddy refuses to part with the child she cares for, so she makes a proposal to Jaspar...

Jaspar is God (there`s no words to describe him...he`s perfect alpha male) and Fredrica is so sweet...

best sentence said by Jaspar to Freddy: "The stammer was overkill..." he told her huskily, white, even teeth flashing as he slanted a mocking smile down at her, "but the welcome invitation was ace-"

5 out of 5 stars The first in the Sister Brides series, and a fantastic read!.......2005-10-12

The Sister Brides series by Lynne Graham is wonderful, because the thread of each sister's story picks up in the next book so we get to find out more about the beloved characters we left behind, and the new things that have happened in their lives. I love that!

This title is the first telling the stories of sisters Freddie, Misty & Ione. Freddie is a gentle family-oriented heroine that uses any means at her disposal to protect her nephew, which sets us off on an emotional story spanning the equator in the intriquing story of both Freddie & Jaspar, the sexy and honorable hero in this tale. Lynne Graham's description of Jaspar is enough to make the ladies swoon!

I am not about to cast religious stones across fictional borders, and think that any culture that is not being bashed would be thankful that theirs is one being written favorably about; so I am somewhat confused by the post below. There is definitely not any bashing going on in this book IMHO, but I understand that everyone takes offense in varying degrees, so I'll just say that I did not get a negative impression of Arab men at all; in fact, if I wasn't already married....

Plus, Lynne Graham's heroes are *all* oversexed. Do we really want to read about a guy with a beer belly who sits blindly in front of the football game on tv all day/every day belching out the occasional "I love you" to the heroine, or about one of Lynne Graham's oversexed heroes?

The line forms behind me, just bring along your favorite LG book to share!

-Cyndi

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-09-12

the book was nice but I would have loved the hear the hero's point of view, at some point in time, about the heroine but I have always loved anything written by lynne graham and I wouldn't stop now.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read!.......2003-03-01

It amazed me that the previous reviewer was so negative about this book. I read a romance for the emotion and the developing relationship and love between the hero and heroine. I enjoy the foreign, exotic setting, but the setting only serve as the romantic backdrop for the story. I don't get all work up over the details of the setting as long the story and characters grab me. Besides which, the Arab country in the book was FICTIONAL so why couldn't Ms. Graham take some literary liberties? Even if there has never been a Christian shiek in real life, it is not beyond the realm of possibility to have a Christian shiek in a FICTIONAL Arab country since his mother was Christian. I did not find Ms. Graham's portrayal of the Arab world as negative or off the mark. The setting gave me a general feel for the Arab world and that is all I need in a short romance. Lynne Graham is an exceptional writer, and her Harlequin Presents are all a notch or more above the rest. She does the foreign heroes like no other! All her heroes are YUMMY! Most of her books are 5-stars reads for me. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is that I have enjoyed some of her other books a little more. Even her 4-stars books is still much more enjoyable than any other series writer in the Harlequin Presents line.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing!.......2002-12-05

I bought this book thinking that I was going to enjoy a romance taking place in one of my favorite cultures. I was disappointed when I realized that this book is filled with negative stereotypes about arabs and muslims. Miss Graham is selling the idea to her readers that Arab men, particulary Muslim men, are all sexual fiends who can't get enough. Also, it is obvious that she has not studied much when it comes to arab culture. There is NO such thing as a Christian Sheik! The idea of a Christian sheik is perposterous. I assume she made the characters Christian since Muslims have been getting a bad wrap after September 11th. Maybe it is silly for me to assume that a mere romance novel should be respectful to the culture it is writing about or at least critique that culture from a place of knowledge rather than using stereotypes that are as old as the Crusades. It is also bizarre that her characters have distincly Muslim names but they are Christian. I wasn't sure if I was reading a love story or a book against Islam. I think Miss Graham needs to stick to love stories and cultures that she is fimiliar with and not comment on such things that she seems to have little knowledge of. Certain pages stick out--page 6-7, a character referring to four wives and concubines. Sorry, but most Muslim marriages, 99%, are monogomous. Only poor farmers or rich kings practice polygamy. Page 79, the veil, Turkey is a Muslim country and the women AREN'T allowed to wear veils. I could go on but I won't. If anyone wants to read a real Arabian love story, try Leila and Majnun or The Arabian Nights!

Book Description

ational Book Critics Circle Award-winner Bharati Mukherjee has long been known not only for her elegant, evocative prose but also for her characters- influenced by ancient customs and traditions but also very much rooted in modern times. In The Tree Bride, the narrator, Tara Chatterjee (whom readers will remember from Desirable Daughters), picks up the story of an East Bengali ancestor. According to legend, at the age of five Tara Lata married a tree and eventually emerged as a nationalist freedom fighter. In piecing together her ancestor's transformation from a docile Bengali Brahmin girl-child into an impassioned organizer of resistance against the British Raj, the contemporary narrator discovers and lays claim to unacknowledged elements in her 'American' identity. Although the story of the Tree Bride is central, the drama surrounding the narrator, a divorced woman trying to get back with her husband, moves the novel back and forth through time and across continents.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Memorable Story.......2007-03-17

This is an enchanting tale of a young Indian woman's search for her roots in old Bangladesh. The search itself is like following the roots of a tree, a fantastical tree that is the husband of her old aunt. Each bit of knowledge takes you deeper into the narrator's past, India's past, the ambivalence of modern Indians whose ancestors had to find identity under the British Raj. How much is fact or fiction in the telling of this history doesn't matter. The story, myth, mystique take us deep into the soul of India, as deep as we can go not having experienced it ourselves.

This book is second in a trilogy (first was "Desirable Daughters). I look forward to experiencing the third.

4 out of 5 stars felt like I walked in in the middle.......2005-08-23

Reading here for the first time that this is part of a trilogy, I see that there may be a reason why I felt a little let down at the end of the Tree Bride (not understanding, still, why the main character's life was threatened by a bomber). It's sort of like reading "The Two Towers" without knowing about the Fellowship of the Ring or the Return of the King. That said, I enjoyed this book immensely (I bought it in an airport and read it instead of Stephen Sears' "The Landscape Turned Red" -- which is not to say anything against the always excellent Stephen Sears). It is true that The Tree Bride has a large ensemble cast and one must be patient to understand the threads connecting the fabric of the story (the theme of which seems to be the conflict between artificial partition and natural connection) but if you are you will be rewarded. I thought the characters were well developed and interesting and I particularly enjoyed the micro review of Indian independence and partition -- so much so that I would like to read more.

And now that I know this was part of a trilogy, I am looking forward to reading "Desirable Daughters" and the third book.

3 out of 5 stars VERY confusing and hard to follow.......2005-04-20

The writing was prose in this novel but the plot was SO confusing. I really don't know what I read most the time. The only thing I got from the book was the main character's pregnancy in later years and how she dealt with it's changing herself. Other than that, the story was mish mash!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Book!.......2004-09-08

This book is a continuation of the story started by the author in the novel Desirable Daughters (also a great read). It is the fascinating examination by the main character of the history of her great-aunt, Tara-Ma, who died in police custody during the struggle for Indian independence. Tied into the storyline is the main character's own life and the late-life pregancy she is experiencing as she gets back together with her ex-husband. There is an element of suspense as she and her husband try to uncover the location of the man who tried to kill them in the previous book. This book is excellent and I highly recommend it to anyone who can read!

5 out of 5 stars A story within a story within a story..........2004-09-08

This book is easily one of the best fiction books I have read. Ms. Mukherjee weaves at least 4 stories together, connecting the lives of Tara Lata Gangooly (the Tree Bride); her great-great niece, Tara Chatterjee; Tara's OB-GYN Dr. V. Khanna; the Dr.'s grandfather Vertie Treadwell; John Mist, founder of Mishtigunj; and Abbas Sattar Hai, leader of the Indian Mafia.
These stories tell of the magic of "coincidence", how each person we meet can have an impact on our lives. An impact that is not felt, sometimes, for generations. As I read the magical history of the Tree Bride, interrupted to retell the adventures (worthy of any Robert Louis Stevenson novel) of John Mist and how he came from a foundling home in London to have a town in East Bengal named for him, I felt like I was hanging on to the sails of an "Indiaman" ship--or running from a tiger through a jungle. But I kept on, hardly able to wait to see how this story connected to the others when I reached the port or crossroads, panting in the sweltering Indian heat.
This book effortlessly takes the reader from modern-day California, to 19th century London, to India during the war for independence, back to England--post WWII, to India from native and English points of view during the British Colonial Period.
I was truly lost in the storm, and, when the ending did come, beautifully, I wanted to go back and delve deeper into each of the stories.
Magical, and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Alexander was Perfect but Eleanor was Untrustworthy.......2006-09-06

The story was perfect, as was Alexander, up until the moment he drank the wine, (in the beginning of the story), then he was consistently burdened with heartache because of Eleanor.
The editorial review listed above is right. I don't think I've ever seen a heroine lie as much as this one did, and often after she'd sworn faithfully to Alexander that she wouldn't do so again. He gave her so many ways out each time, with his kindness and willingness to take her side, but still, she would lie to him. Then he would find himself being 'thankful' when she'd let him in on the truth behind one of her 'secrets.' How appalling.
At one point, when she decides to tell Alexander and his people a truth, only because they'd caught her in one of her lies, she turns it into a Once-there-was-a-woman story, leaving the people to figure out that she's talking about herself. Couldn't she have just said it was she? Granted, she was treated horribly in the past, but I could drum up no sympathy for this woman because she was deceptive to the end - she had invited Lord Reinhard without telling Alexander, (she could have told him without revealing her final secret)and Alexander is again pained by her actions. All manners of horrible things are going through his mind, not the least of which is his fear that his newborn might be ill. He deserved a better wife.

Great once again. Couldn't put it down the first time and have reread it more than once since!

THE SNOW WHITE BRIDE by Claire Delacroix
November 10, 2005

Amazon rating 4/5 stars

"The Snow White Bride by Claire Delacroix is the third in a 1400s family trilogy set in England. The oldest brother Alexander has the task of keeping Kinfairlie from going into debt. In the first two books, his objective was to marry off his sisters, Madeleine and Vivienne. In this third episode, the sisters get an idea of their own - to coax their brother into marrying a woman of their choosing. This ends up being a stranger who shows up on their property, seeking help. Lady Eleanor's life story is a mystery, but the sisters are aware that she is running away from someone. They agree to get their brother to marry her, no matter what it takes!" - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

I enjoyed this book a lot. The entire series was fun. Recommended for those who love historical romances with a touch of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Medieval.......2005-11-02

Setting - Kinfarlie, Scotland - 1421 --- In a desperate flight to freedom, Lady Eleanor had made her way to the village of Kinfarlie, Scotland but with the snow falling fast and furious, she needs to find shelter - and soon! Seeing a church through the falling snow she was grateful to find the door unlocked - sanctuary, and at last a place to rest. It was here that the two sisters of Alexander Lammergeier, Laird of Kinfarlie would discover Eleanor and formulate a plan to both aid the beautiful lady and give their brother a dose of his own medicine after tricking the both of them into marriage!

Lady Eleanor was amazed at the Laird of Kinfairlie's sisters warmth and caring, as well as shocked that they wanted a complete stranger to marry their brother. After years of abuse at the hands of two deceased husbands, she finally agreed, sensing that the young laird could at least offer her protection from the danger that followed close on her heels. What she didn't quite expect was to discover a man who seemed to want nothing more from her than to make her smile; who seemed to respect her as a person; and who sparked in her a passion that she'd never before experienced.

Alexander was enchanted with his mysterious new wife and though he soon discovered how he'd been tricked into the marriage, he wanted to gain her trust and her love. It would soon became a true test of his faith when he realized that she held many secrets close to her heart, a heart that he was no longer sure was pure. As much as Alexander wanted to believe in her, rumors of her murdering her late husbands and mysterious accidental poisonings at Kinfairlie pointed to her guilt, as a ruthless fiend sought to capture her for himself or would Alexander's love be enough to save them both?

--- In the third book to the `Jewels of Kinfairlie' trilogy, Delacroix has penned another exciting, sensual and edge of the seat romantic adventure. Delacroix proves once again how masterful she is at creating wonderful characters and integrating a fabulous plot, mystery and sensuality into the mix. Eleanor was brilliantly drawn so that the reader truly felt overwhelming sympathy over the horrors that were visited down on her; Alexander was a dream hero; and the villain a total ruthless fiend! This is a totally entertaining read and it begs this reader to say - please, don't stop here - there's three more jewels (the rest of the Lammergeir sisters) just waiting for stories! --- Marilyn, for (...)

5 out of 5 stars terrific Kinfairlie medieval romance .......2005-10-25

The Laird of Kinfairlie, Alexander, is proud of marrying off two of his sisters Vivienne (see THE ROSE RED BRIDE) and Madeline (see THE BEAUTY BRIDE) in what appears to be happy relationships. However, his two siblings have not forgotten how poorly he managed their futures once he replaced their deceased parents. Vivienne and Madeline decide to find a bride for their brother before he can wed off the still too young remaining sisters.

They select Lady Eleanor who wants to marry for love and passion, but knows men only covet her fortune. Alexander's siblings ask her to marry their brother. She knows if she chooses Alexander as her husband she will be freed from danger of those abusive suitors willing to do anything to claim her fortune as theirs. However, Alexander is interested in her smile that makes his insides weak. He wants Eleanor by his side for a lifetime, but persuading her he loves her starts with earning her trust.

The third Kinfairlie medieval romance is a terrific entry as the two sisters avenge their brother's misdeeds by finding the right woman for him if he is wise enough to realize it. The story line is exciting but character driven starting with the contented married siblings plotting their brother's fall into matrimony and only getting deeper as the heroine trusts nothing male because they only want her only her fortune while Alexander knows he can achieve security with Eleanor, but wants more as he realizes she is his soulmate.

back: Ione Gakis is one of the richest young women in the world. When her father orders her to marry Greek tycoon Alexio Christoulakis, Ione secretly plans to disappear on the wedding night...But she finds herself captivated by her husband-to-be`s charisma...

opinion: best Harlequin I have read...I love you always Ione and Alexio Christoulakis : )

best part of the book in my opinion:
"Alexio saw Edward the bear before he recognized his wife. Her back turned to him, a young girl who looked like a teenager was gazing into a shop with bear who might have been Edward`s double tucked beneath her arm. Alexio stilled, his gaze welding to the glorious fall of platinum fair hair falling to the girl`s waist. Ione? Could it be? In a chequer-board print skirt so tiny she should have been arrested for wearing it? Not to mention a pink crop top that exposed her bare midriff and absurd shoes with heels studded with stones that glittered?
Ione? Alexio was stunned, incredulous and awake to the reality that there was not a man within fifty yards failing to pay heed to her. He watched her stroll on to a magazine display and the slow, gliding walk was pure sex and Ione to the hilt. He saw her full face and snatched in a startled breath. The madonna perfection had been enhanced with cosmetics. She looked bloody spectacular, Alexio thought with a sudden stab of fury. He watched his wife produce an entire handful of high domination currency to buy one little magazine. The guy on the stand was so entranced by the fairy-tale princess before him that he started to explain what the notes were."

5 out of 5 stars Captivating storyline.......2006-02-10

I found the heroine of this book, Ione, totally fascinating from beginning to end. Alexio, the hero, was fabulous from the get-go also, with sparks flying despite themselves and their own hidden agendas.

This is an intriguing storyline with unexpected twists & turns, and plenty of sexy scenes to keep one turning page after page.

Since the basic plot-line has already been given by another reviewer, I'll just say that Ione plays it meek at the beginning so that she can get her way later, which doeesn't take long! She soon sends the hero, Alexio, on a merry chase that I found a wonderful read. He ends up showing protective tendencies that are quite swoon-worthy.

This one is on my keeper shelf.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME . .......2003-09-14

This is one of her best books. A tale of love and romantic ideals from the hero and naivity and a strong sense of survival from the heroine. They both found pure Love and strove hard to preserve it inspite of their pride. The heroine showed a strength of character that is often lacking in some of Lynne's other heroines. The twist and turn of the plots take your breath away.Very good book you won't be able to put it down until the last word is read. very emotional.Excellent read.
Uenna.

3 out of 5 stars Poor little rich girl.......2002-11-06

Ione Gakis, one of the richest young women in the world, yearns for freedom. When her father orders her to marry Greek tycoon Alexio Christoulakis, Ione secretly plans to disappear without a trace on the wedding night. However, this one is a little darker than most of her other stories. There is not any of that offbeat humor some of the stories have and I gave it three stars because I didn't care for the resolution of the conflict between Ione and her father. When he is dying, she goes back to be with him and gets all upset that he's helpless. A better plot conflict would have been that she didn't go back and Alexio won't understand why.

5 out of 5 stars Good quality family drama.......2007-05-12

This is a classic Love Inspired story of lost souls learning to let go of guilt and pain from the past so they can move forward and build a new family-life together. As stipulated in Aunt Jo's will, in order to claim her inheritance, niece Clare, who is a teacher, must serve as a Nanny for a widowed Doctor for six-months. I appreciated that the welfare of the child, Nicole, and her relationship with the adults was given priority over the developing romance between her father, Adam, and her nanny, Clare. I also liked how the adults learned to place trust in God and allow Him to steer their destiny, because His plan isn't always what we plan for ourselves. That's an important lesson for all of us to reflect upon. Of the three sisters in this trilogy, Clare is the warmest and the one who moved me to laughter and tears as I read her story. (AJ in the first book is the strongest and most resilient sister, and the one I admired the most!)

I'm a #1 Fan of the IRENE HANNON'S FAN CLUB! In fact I could be its President! I really loved #1 "Sisters & Brides" THE BEST GIFT and now? The #2, GIFT FROM THE HEART is as good if not even more enjoyable. And? Yet to come in the trilogy? #3 THE UNEXPECTED GIFT should be just as stupendous. Mrs.Hannon can weave a tale unsurpassed in the genre of Inspirational Romance. Both of these two #1 and #2 novels were rated by the ROMANTIC TIMES MAGAZINE as four and a half stars. (I happen to like them even more!) So? If you have a couple of days and want to be entertained and romanced properly? Buy these two books and see if I'm not right!
