Book Description
This volume utilizes the cross-cultural, historical and ethnographic perspective of anthropology to illuminate the intrinsic connections of race, class and gender. The author begins by discussing the manner in which her experience as a participant observer led her to research and write about various aspects of African-American women's experiences. She goes on to provide a critical analysis of the new scholarship on African-American women, and explores issues of race, class and gender in the arenas of work, kinship and resistance.
The first section explores the fundamental issue of how work outside the home conditions the experience of gender, while essays in the second section challenge traditional definitions of the family and explore the role of culture, history and society in conditioning household structure and function. The essays in the final section explore transformative strategies in politics and in the academy.
On Our Own Terms concludes by examining the implications of issues raised in the volume for the feminist agenda and for our understanding of social processes.

Customer Reviews:
Here's Da Scoop on Moe Deezy's Book.......2006-02-02
I, and dozens of teens in the community with whom I volunteer, love this book. It makes a great ice-breaker, and a great resource for folks who work in communities where slanguage is frequently used. It is almost 700 pages in length, with what appears to be perhaps a 1000 entries. The entries not only provide a definition of each word or term, but also it's history (old school vs. new school, etc.) and examples of how the words might be used. Just leave it sitting around where teens hangout, and see what happens (they may read together, laugh together, critique and analyze the entries together). The book has a scholarly yet humorous appeal to it. I am a college professor myself, and my college students also seem to like this book. I think it has widespread potential for a broad range of audiences. It has turned out to be a treasure. It would make a nice gift for mature teens, parents, educators, social workers, nurses, business people, clergy, and politicians. Caution: it may not be suitable for pre-adolescent children because of some of the mature themes. I would love to see Randy "Moe Deezy" also author a Thesaurus along this line. I'm done. Now let me translate what I just said using entries from the book: Okay, here's da scoop (p. 485). Good googily moogily, this book is off the chain! (pp. 240 & 396). I'm really clickin' with this book, and da shorties in my hood love this book too (pp. 115, 499, & 275). It's worth da cheese (p. 107). It handles business on the one hand, and makes you crack up at times as well (pp. 251 & 128). I also have to school shorties in college, and they dig the book too (pp. 484, 499, & 143). It's a tightly done book, and will interest everyone from the homies to the new jacks (pp. 578, 274 & 387). It's a wrap, peace out! (pp. 311& 418).
STREET TALK, Hip-Hop/Urban cultures' "phat" new dictionary/guide.......2005-10-29
STREET TALK:
Da Official Guide To Hip-Hop & Urban Slanguage` - Randy Kearse (Author House)
At the best of times good reviews can sometimes seem hard to come by. When Randy Kearse (AKA `Moe Deezy`) wrote to me personally asking that I comment on his new book, I was equally surprised and moved. While there has never been a statue erected in memory of a critic, we're obviously doing something right when the creative types contact us directly to help them out on the PR front. But what has Moe D. actually written that he could possibly need my POV? Was it a biography? Was it a gritty urban novel? Was it a book of Tupac-esque poetry? When the second email came back, I discovered that I'd been asked to review a dictionary (as I said, good reviews can sometimes seem hard to come by)
But, as you can see from the title, this isn't any kind of dictionary. This book (weighing in at an impressive 700 pages) is the most definitive collection of hip-hop/urban slang terms, colloquialisms and turns of phrase that you could ever `buck up on`. Even though I can't personally envision Kid Rock getting hold of this book to keep on his desk next to his legal notepad, thesaurus and rhyming dictionary - it should be required reading for anyone who has even a passing interest in the genre. I know that many longtime fans might be disappointed that their music is going so mainstream, but if colleges in New Jersey are throwing symposiums on the music of Bruce Springsteen, then the celebration of the words and dialects of the hip-hop and urban cultures deserves to have its day.
All cynicism aside, Kearse has been able to pull the book together in a systematic, even scholarly fashion. Instead of it just being a one-dimensional dictionary, the book distinguishes between East Coast and West Coast, southern and general slang. It also throws in the old and new school turns of phrases that many of the readers will likely be very familiar with. That being said, Kearse unfortunately did pass on the opportunity to start another East Coast vs. West Coast rap war (he didn't want to suggest or imply that one geographical area slang is better than another) but it's probably for the best, regardless of how funny it would have been for the press to try and stir the hip-hop regions against each other based on slang. Also I'm still amazed by just how many ways you can refer to the derriere of the fairer sex, but now is neither the time nor place to start expounding on that particular topic.
At the end of the day, an idea as unique and well researched as this book suggests to me that Moe Deezy is not going to become a one-hit wonder (for those of you who get the book, there are a couple of `trailers` nearer the end regarding some of the books he has in the pipeline) Here's to the first of many... I'm planning on getting myself a plate of 'barnyard pimp' for lunch and using the time to review how one can use the `izz` sound in conversation. Thanks man.

Very funny!.......1997-09-29
I really enjoyed the third installment of this hilarious series of books! Althought it was entertaining, it was not as good as the first two, Snaps and Double Snaps. I find these books particularly interesting because i used to live in the city and play "snaps" with my friends and see who came up with the best insult.

Book Description
Why, at the peak of the Jim Crow era early in the twentieth century, did life expectancy for African Americans rise dramatically? And why, when public officials were denying African Americans access to many other public services, did public water and sewer service for African Americans improve and expand? Using the qualitative and quantitative tools of demography, economics, geography, history, law, and medicine, Werner Troesken shows that the answers to these questions are closely connected. Arguing that in this case, racism led public officials not to deny services but to improve them -- the only way to "protect" white neighborhoods against waste from black neighborhoods was to install water and sewer systems in both -- Troesken shows that when cities and towns had working water and sewer systems, typhoid and other waterborne diseases were virtually eradicated. This contributed to the great improvements in life expectancy (both in absolute terms and relative to whites) among urban blacks between 1900 and 1940. Citing recent demographic and medical research findings that early exposure to typhoid increases the probability of heart problems later in life, Troesken argues that building water and sewer systems not only reduced waterborne disease rates, it also improved overall health and reduced mortality from other diseases.
Troesken draws on many independent sources of evidence, including data from the Negro Mortality Project, econometric analysis of waterborne disease rates in blacks and whites, analysis of case law on discrimination in the provision of municipal services, and maps showing the location of black and white households. He argues that all evidence points to one conclusion: that there was much less discrimination in the provision of public water and sewer systems than would seem likely in the era of Jim Crow.

It is insightful and requires personal reflection. Within the three categories are 13 individual flowing chapters that discusses being the sole woman of color in the workplace and how to embrace our uniqueness while maintain a positive role within the workforce. The reader is encouraged to be able to talk the talk and be prepared to speak the language necessary for the job you want. Corporate America is compared to a game of football and all to often, we don't come to play. We are reminded the key to Corporate America is to understand the game and play it to win! Even if we stumble along the way, we must learn to turn setbacks into comebacks by turning the lemons handed to us by life into lemonade. In the racism and sexism chapter, Paula Sneed, the Group VP of Kraft Foods, states "Racism and Sexism in the workplace is so prevalent, we have to be able to use the fact that we are women and women of color to our advantage. [Others] want to see it as a negative and therefore set the bar low. They don't know what we can accomplish." As Daphne Jones states, "the proverbial glass ceiling is really a concrete ceiling and you have to find a way to chisel yourself through."
This book is small, but mighty. An introspective writing exercise is included to further delve into one's situation at the end of each chapter. Also, additional resources and websites at the end of each chapter are referenced for further examination. No matter your chosen career path, individual choices and goals, The NIA GUIDE is a great resource!

Book Description
Very little is known about why and when African American elders seek formal long-term care, or about the characteristics of assisted living environments they consider most desirable. Drawing on qualitative studies conducted between 1998 and 2001, the authors of Communities of Care provide important information on historic and current trends in assisted living systems serving African Americans.
Focusing on six facilities that have become models of long-term care for African Americans, the authors shed light on the daily lives of the people who live, work, and visit these "communities of care."With detailed profiles of the facilities, interviews, and case histories of care recipients, the authors explore both the institutional and personal characteristics of the facilities and the issues central to their residents.
This definitive work brings to the forefront critical questions about how race, gender, and culture affect the quality of, access to, and cost of care. These questions have broad implications for the policy, administration, and operation of assisted living.

Cute book.......2001-01-12
We're taking our 4 kids to New Orleans next month. As is my habit, I bought books about the area we're visiting to familiarize them ahead of time. Road trips are so much more fun that way!
Reading the book through the first time, my 10 year old got the jokes right away (ie: a picture of a fairy transporting the little girl's father across the river while the text mentions he takes the "ferry" to work each day), my 6yo got some of them, and my 4yo was completely confused. It is a cute book from an adult point of view, but during the first read-through with a non-native child, next time I would take the time to explain the double meanings of each phrase using the glossary provided in the back of the book.
This book is a good value for anyone who would like to introduce a child to the unique culture of New Orleans. It is not a stand alone book, however. It is a nice complement to the book _New Orleans (Cities of the World)_
Truly the way children see what they read or hear.......1998-12-28

Product Description
Studies of populations affected by Large Dams are usually about physically displaced and resettled communities. This book on the Volta River Project breaks with the mould and tackles the long term environmental and socio-economic impacts of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, and livelihood responses of two neglected groups- downstream and lakeside communities. In a detailed study which takes a gendered political economy of livelihoods approach, the book considers the contribution of factors such as the environmental restructuring of the Lower Volta, the exodus of its most economically active population to the Volta Lake, the State's neglect of affected communities, the changing socio-economic context of Ghana, and social relations of class, gender and kinship, to livelihood trajectories and outcomes.
