WHEN MILLER WAS KING!.......2007-08-28
Before Sin City, before Dark Knight Returns, there was Frank Miller's Daredevil. In my opinion the best thing he ever did. He took a "B" rated super hero comic, that was being published bi-monthly, and turned it into one of the best selling monthly books of it's time. The ideas that Miller introduced in these stories are still resonating in the Marvel Universe today. He turned Daredevil into a super-bad ninja warrior. He made the Kingpin a major villain with unlimited underworld clout. He transformed Bullseye from a two-bit hood into the world's greatest assassin. And most noteably, he introduce Matt Murdock's ninja assassin love interest, Elektra.
These are some of my favorite comics of all time. The stories are a brilliant blend of super hero adventure and film style action and pacing. Not as light and upbeat as some of the books of the time, but not as dark and depressing as the "gritty" stuff Marvel is publishing these days. While I really liked some of the early adventures of DD by Stan Lee, Wally Wood, John Romita etc., for me Daredevil begins and ends with this legendary run. Nuff said.
great!!.......2007-06-13
awesome collection of the frank millar daredevil run! great quality printing, pages feel great.
Vol. 1 of the COMPLETE Frank Miller run of Daredevil.......2007-05-27
I'm not gonna try to sell you on this book 'cause if you're looking at it you're already a Frank Miller fan. So... before I purchased this book I wanted to know what issues were contained therein! Above there are claimes this book contains DD issues #158 thru #191; this is only sort of true...
This most wonderful book ACTUALLY contains:
Daredevil #158 - 161 and #163 - 191 as well as the DD story from
What If...? #34!
Cool bonuses are: ALL of Franks DD trade paperback reprint covers, thumbnails and color guides for issue #190, a new introduction and an 1981 interview w/ Frank and Klaus,Frank's DD page from Fantastic Four Roast #1, AND Frank's intries from the Offcial Handbook of the Marvel Universe!
You know you want it True Beliver!
'Nuff said!
The standard by which all others are judged.......2007-05-17
In the early 80's, Frank Miller took a tired, lost superhero with low sales and proceeded to reinvent crime comics forever. Dispatching with the standard superhero sensibilty and owing a great debt to Will Eisner's The Spirit, Miller created a new milieu in which the flaws of both Daredevil and his alter ego, Matt Murdock were write large, his supporting cast was fleshed out and his gallery of villians expanded to include ninjas and gangsters.
Along the way, the typical hero-villan confrontations became wrought with far greater emotion than had been previously shown. And, yes, the violence quotient was ratcheted up exponentially.
These stories famously became the basis for the Daredevil movie but here they are in their definitive form. The hardcover collection has all of Miller's Daredevil output from the early 80s. In them, you can see the pre-cursor for Miller's own Sin City. Additionally, Miller's pencils were never better than here. Unlike his future efforts, the style does not overwhlem the substance here. His pencils and Klaus Janson's inks mesh in a manner that occurs only a few times in comics history, joining the great penciller-inker teams like Kirby/Sinnot, Swan/Anderson and Byrne/Austin.
The only minus: it does not include the final portion of Miller's DD output: the classic "Born Again" series he wrote in the mid-80s simultaneously with another little thing he was working on called "The Dark Knight Returns". However, that's carping. This is meant to show Miller's work on the monthly when he was expected to write it forever. Of course, that never happens. But, at least we'll always have this omnibus to remind us of what was...
Oh, yeah, and there's also Elektra!!!!!!!!!
Frank Miller MUST read.......2007-05-13
I own all of the original Daredevil's in what might be the greatest comic book series of all time. When this was released I immediately ordered it so that my sons could relive the experience without touching the precious (and valuable!) originals. As I knew, they both devoured the edition like a starving survivor lost in the desert would consume food and water. This is food and water for all thirsty and hungry Miller fans that never read Frank at his youthful, artistic and brilliant best. Be daring.....buy it and don't put it down until slaked. You will never regret buying but will regret not.

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children's cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller's stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.
Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it's a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome. --Mark Thwaite

Batman.......2007-10-09
Can't say I understand the whole Batman story entirely yet, but it is very compelling and well written. Very helpful for my Comic Writing Class schoolwork.
Other Books.......2007-09-03
Well, it really doesn't get any better than this. I was hooked on hits from the first time I saw the cover image in a comic shop.
The news media scenes now, are pretty much right out of today, with screaming pundits on the television, American style.
The fascism and violence prompts Bruce Wayne out of retirement. Heartened by the assistance of a young girl, he plans his strategy.
He has one major obstacle.
Superman, who is now a covert special forces operative lapdog.
The greatest tale of batman.......2007-08-14
This book tells the return of Batman in an future where Gotham City is in peace but sudenly appears a new threat, mutants, and they are powerfull and they work like a gang of destruction, you will see the Joker, Superman, Catwoman, Two Face, etc all of them older, cracier and pitiless. Fank Miller give power to the history he is a genius, and the drawing is strange but with a lot of impact and action. If you like batman, you must have this book, and if you never read a batman comic, then when you read this one you will change your mind.
Not For Me (...and possibly not for you).......2007-08-06
I will start by saying that I have enjoyed DC Comics and their heroes for almost twenty-five years. In particular, I have always loved reading about Batman, Robin, NightWing, and anything that was related to the Gotham crime fighting circuit. I couldn't believe that after all these years, I had yet to read what was regarded as one of the best graphic novels of all time. While on vacation this summer, I decided it was time to finally read this classic.
First, the artwork doesn't appeal to me. I know others love it and will defend how wonderful it is. That's fine, it just doesn't suit my tastes and I can get over it provided the story is good. So, is the story good? It's okay. I can definitely see why other people like it, and I appreciate the different approach Miller took to the time and setting, I felt that it was too over the top though. I found myself wondering if this was suppose to be ten years after Bruce's retirement, or forty. I also didn't care for some of the assumptions that are made throughout the story in regards to several characters' pasts. The development and appearance of "Robin" in this novel was weak and pointless, other than to provide a cheap reason for an event (that I won't spoil) that takes place near the conclusion of the book.
Finally, I felt like the book drug on way too long. The brutality of Gotham City and the Bruce Wayne vs. Batman ego struggle was beat to death in my opinion. I could have cared less about the politics of Gotham, which also was repeated time and time again. I didn't feel as though there was a decent balance between those storylines and the ones involving Two Face and Joker.
To wrap this up, I will be honest and say that I did not enjoy this masterpiece the way almost everyone else has. The futuristic story and excessively "dark" setting feel like paths I've been down too many times in too many other books. I am glad though that most seem to have enjoyed the story, it just isn't for everyone.
One of the great graphic novels of our generation.......2007-08-01
A friend of mine let me borrow his copy of this and I read the whole thing straight through. Now a year or so later I am buying The Watchmen and this book comes up as recommended. I can't help but buy it. Frank Miller paints an incredible revision of the idea of Batman. His art and story flow so well together. This book has helped to re-define the current definition of a graphic novel. I can't recommend this enough.

Some Interesting Essays, Some Surprising Lapses.......2007-06-26
The good: The book lavishes the mandatory amount of space on the usual topics such as racism and women, but fortunately reaches out to a larger audience. There is good material on science and technology as well as social sciences and public affairs. There's also a good selection of material of various rhetorical styles of writing. And the discussion questions after the essays generally avoid biasing the discussion. Very useable for class.
The so-so: One reviewer refers to the liberal bent of the texts. And it's abundantly clear that some perspectives receive very privileged status in Fields of Reading. So if you're looking for one version of current ivory tower orthodoxy, here it is. In that sense, there is little diversity in this book, really. So many other possible sources for writing and insights, from Fortune and BusinessWeek to Wired and The Wall Street Journal...I wish the authors had thought a little more outside their box.
The bad: Surprisingly unreliable editing. Incredibly, despite having five academics work on this, they still get important facts flat-out wrong. They apparently confused the number of wounded at Pearl Harbor with the number killed: they cite 1177 deaths in an editorial footnote, whereas knowledgeable writers (Prange) cite 2403 dead and 1178 wounded. And page 234 of my edition refers to the "missile" which hit Nagasaki!
I quote from the instructor's edition for the seventh edition; perhaps they bothered with fact-checking for the new edition. How these errors of fact endured this far is a mystery only the editors can answer. But perhaps the hidden text here is that there are only certain things these academics really care about getting right.
Motives for Teaching?.......2004-10-25
When you contemplate the long list of standard authors, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winners, worthy of emulation by students, what names spring to the forefront of your mind? Adam Gopnick, Vivian Gornick, Zoe Tracy Hardy? If not, you are out of touch with Ms. Magazine, The Village Voice, and The New Republic, those repositories of great literature, from which these and other authors are selected. You may not realize that "nonverbal courtship patterns in women" is on a par with the Declaration of Independence, or that war, racism, government, big business, fast food and most white people are all bad, or that minorities, women, homosexuals, and New York City are all good. You MIGHT, however, question whether this is really an English 101 textbook, as it pretends, or a social tract promulgating the doctrinaire beliefs of the political left. It is interesting reading, but whether or not one agrees with the selected authors, it is emphatically not a student textbook on writing, and it is not a good choice for that purpose compared to other texts available. It is not what it pretends to be.
Phenomenal Reading!.......2003-02-10
I had to purchase this book for my english course, but after only two weeks of reading and discussion I feel such an empowerment by the selections. I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite author because each one is represented so uniquely by their stories. After my class is over, I look forward to sitting down and reading those that were not assigned and re-reading those icons of society that were picked by my professor. If you want a short introduction to various famous authors then this is definitely a book you will enjoy!

Great Compilation.......2007-04-03
A well put together bundle of both the classic and the new graphic novels with a few extras. Very Impressive packaging (coffee table worthy).
Cost to damn much........2007-01-28
The first one was great. The second one...I think that Frank Miller read "Kingdom Come" and said "I can do better!".
Only problem is. He didn't.
Once Amazon dropped their discount this is no longer worth it. Buy it if you love Frank Miller but buy it somewhere else.
BOTH Worthy Reads.......2007-01-27
Everybody knows TDKR was a phenominal book. What everybody doesn't know is that The Dark Knight Strikes Again is ALSO a phenominal book. Many readers have their opinions warped by superficial comic book reviewers who critique Miller's sequel because it was not as "dark" or "gritty" as the first book was. Is that it? Is that you're only complaint? Are you so ignorant that you're not going to delve underneath the appearances to look at the thematic significance of the work?
Yes, TDKSA is a departure from its predecessor in terms of style. But it still shines in RELEVENCY. Miller gives us a mind blowing look at what our society is and may become. What is democracy in the media age? Do the people really run a country where a select few that run the major news outlets control everything that the people know and believe? And does it make us feel any better that it is one man, Batman, who is arrogant enough to enforce his social ideology on us?
Don't be fooled. While The Dark Knight Returns is still a significant work in today's literary work, it was a book about yesterday. The Dark Knight Strikes Again is a book about TODAY.
Great Batman book.......2007-01-16
I love Batman and this book is realy great its one of the best books I own you should buy it.
Half good, half ordinary.......2007-01-16
I can distinctly remember the pleasure I had reading the original Return of the Dark Knight issues way, way back. A massive, high quality volume like Absolute Dark Knight is fitting for a such body of work. Sadly, the second part is _much_ less interesting in most respects.

Brag! is a whip smart tool kit--one that tampers with our beliefs about humility by defining bragging as an act of authenticity. Peggy Klaus, a Fortune 500 communication coach, sharpened her strategies in Hollywood, "the bragging capitol of the world," where she learned the art of tooting your horn, without blowing it. "To brag is to talk about your best self with pride and passion in a conversational manner." explains Klaus. She includes a snappy "Bragging Dictionary" with highly practical techniques including instructions for the "Bragalogue," a brief memorable elevator pitch and a "Brag bag," the collection of your greatest hits with colorful details that can be easily accessed.
Bragging rights and responsibilities are surveyed in a variety of situations: the co-worker who takes credit, techno-bragging online, performance reviews, job interviews and working a room. Klaus peppers her points with examples from her coaching sessions and seminars, sample dialogues and self-assessments. Although several examples may seem too studied, Klaus has much to brag about. This is a book that will change the way you think about the slippery skill of selling yourself. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
It is well-documented that working hard isn't enough to keep your professional star rising: Self-promotion is recognized as one of the most important attributes for getting ahead. But learning to share your talents and successes without coming across as smug or rehearsed is a tricky skill. Now, Peggy Klaus, top communication and leadership coach, has developed a program that will teach anyone to brag-and get away with it. Filled with practical examples of ways in which people in various work-life stages can promote themselves, Klaus teaches readers to communicate strengths and accomplishments without appearing too opportunistic, eager, egotistical, or self-aggrandizing. Now anyone can communicate with style and substance-in any situation-and walk away shining like the star they are!
Customer Reviews:
Good on concept/Poor on skill development.......2007-08-07
This book reads like a really good magazine article - you get hooked on the concept, but leave wanting more. Author does a great job comparing and contrasting specific examples of how to self-promote and provides a guide to preparing your self-promotion pitch. However, it doesn't articulate a specific framework and set of skills that I can draw upon in any situation. I found it hard to identify the take-aways from chapters that were just rolling examples. Overall, helpful for the guide on preparing your pitch and examples, but fails in developing real skills.
Good foundation, but weak execution.......2007-07-19
I was excited to read this book based on the everyone's comments. However, by the end I quickly realized it lacked the takeaways one expects.
It talks in length about how to promote yourself, but it fails to drive home the distiction between those who promote gracefully and those that just brag. I was expecting to learn this difference based on the title.
It never happened. So I give it two stars based on some good content, but no more given it misses the mark.
A impressive and entertaining book to read. .......2007-06-20
I loved reading this book and completed it about half the time it usually takes me to read a book. The more I read the book the more I nodded in agreement of the bad habits that people make.
I realized that I am too modest and have been looked over a work and passed up for better positions because I am very relunctant to talk about myself.
What this book has done for me is given me the confidence to talk about myself in a positive light. The book gives you advice on different situations such as networking events, presentations and job-interviews.
After reading this book I am sure that I will reference it in the future and for that I am happy that I bought the book and not borrowed it from the library. I highly recommend this book for the ambitious person.
Very impressed.......2007-05-02
I am about to read this book, but I attended Peggy Klaus' seminar today at work on the same subject and I have to say it was life altering!
In fact, people would generally classify me as reserved.
But when I came back to my office after the seminar, I was firing off decisions and commands like Meryl Streep in Prada!
I am sure everyone thought I was on drugs!
Wanta-be entrepreneurs need to read this book, and successful entrepreneurs probably already have!.......2007-04-15
A gem of a book. We all know that bragging for bragging's sake is a no-no. Few of us like being around a braggart, and we try to avoid them most of the time. But a businessperson has to get the word out about what she sells or does for a living. Successful people don't call their pitches "bragging," but instead call it self promotion.
But what is the difference between a silly braggart and being a good self-promoter? Well, the answer can be found in the instant book. And the author has done a wonderful job of explaining the difference.
All the chapters were good, but my favorites were Chapter 4 (Techno Brag) and Chapter 8 (When You're Out on Your Own). These two chapters were the most relevant to self-employed small business owners. And they are the chapters that my clients at SCORE need to pay special attention to. 5 stars!

FInite Element Procedures.......2007-10-16
One of the most thorough references on the finite element technique. The text focuses on proven and tested methods for analysis, focusing on the analytical foundations of FEA. Although it does cover some FORTRAN implementations of FEA, the text does not contain much on commercial FEA packages.
Excellent Book.......2007-06-27
This is an excellent book for both introduction on Finite Element Method and Numerical methods concerning solution of FEM Equations.
This is an excellent book for both studying alone and for FEM courses.
This is an excellent book for both undergraduate and graduate students.
This is an excellent book for both fun and work!
...
Muito Bom Livro... recomendo!
Hi level book........2004-09-20
The book is keystone for those involved in FEA. It covers all the aspects of Finite Element formulation of physical problems, thought in a more coincise way with respect to , say, Zienkiewicz work and in a less prosaic way. As with many other FE books, the level of mathematics involved in the book is quite high, especially if one considers the non linear finite element formulation for continuum mechanics. Even though the book is mainly intended for structural engineers, it covers fluid dynamics and heat transfer topics. The section I mostly used was the one regarding solution methods for FEM problems: here, Dr Bathe makes a really nice job (about 150 pages). There's a code at the end of the book, it's a FORTRAN 77 one, but one can translate it into a more modern language (I guess we all should get the rid of FORTRAN 77....).
Exercises on non linear FEM tend to be hard, but if you can get the solution book it should't represent a problem.
Two more things: even if the book, as aforementioned, mainly focuses on structural mechanics, there's a common background in FEM problem formulation regardless the particular subject it is intended for.
Second: the book is a very good one, but in my opinion if one intends to study only the basics of FEM, Reddy's book is more suitable for the purpouse. On the other hand, if one intends to pursue a higher level of FEM understanding, this book is a must. This book should be on the shelf of every serious FEM analyst. What's more...I guess Dr. Klaus Jurgen Bathe has to be a very nice person! :-)
Excellent finite element text.......2004-09-08
This is an excellent text for students and practioners alike. The presentation is brief and to the point and focuses only on algorithms and techniques that have been proven to work. The problems are excellent and can only be solved if one understands the essence of the techniques presented. There are many textbooks on finite elements but none so thought provoking as this one. Definitely a must read!
Most valuable book.......2003-08-20
This is the only book I keep reading.
This is absolutly the most valuable book in finite element method area for engineers and students.
There is no doubt.
Do not spend time and money to buy other books.

Needs an update... but still a must for every RFID professional.......2006-05-19
Book provides a solid foundation for RFID physics and the fundamental concepts. It gets really boring at times because of its staright forward approach and technical jargon. There is no other book in the market that capture RFID in such a depth; however the book is requires a immediate update to incorporate EPCglobal standards and other recent developments in the RFID industry.
RFID (RF Coupling in the Near field).......2005-04-07
RFID is a well written book. It covers hardware, regulations,
and RFID applications.
What I like about RFID is that it explains rF devices
in the near -field. Almost every other book I have read is about RF far-field.
The knowledge is useful in understanding the sources of noise in lab equipment caused by high frequency induction fields.
(These signals go right through the usual metal enclosures.)
Its useful.
Good collection of concepts.......2004-04-16
This book has a very good collection of most of the concepts related to RFID and is very useful especially for beginners in RFID. I gave only 4 stars as I was dissappointed not to see any examples for any or almost all the concepts explained. For what it costs, I think it makes sense to add some examples liked to some important concepts.
Great book for understanding the concepts and applications.......2003-06-04
If you are an Engineer looking to understand the history, technical aspects, implementation, standards and details of RFID systems, this book provides an excellent introduction for you.
The chapters are well laid out and paced. The author explains the most common devices and systems available in the market, their technology and concepts quite well. Most of the RFID related standards have been covered along with relevant examples. The author covers such things as the hardware design specifications for devices, software requirements, and some basic RF concepts that are required to understand Transponder and Receiver designs.
If you need specifics about recent products however, you might want to research for other sources of information because this book does not cover vendors and products in detail. For readers without technical background, the book introduces the concepts well; but some content might not be relevant because of the [technical] nature.

Book Description
The complete and essential guide to birth with a doula by the "undisputed experts in the field."-- Los Angeles Times
More and more parents-to-be all over the world are choosing the comfort and reassuring support of birth with a trained labor companion called a "doula." This warm, authoritative, and irreplaceable guide completely updates the authors' earlier book, Mothering the Mother, and adds much new and important research. In addition to basic advice on finding and working with a doula, the authors show how a doula reduces the need for cesarean section, shortens the length of labor, decreases the pain medication required, and enhances bonding and breast feeding. The authors, world-renowned authorities on childbirth with combined experience of over 100 years working with laboring women, have made their book indispensable to every woman who wants the healthiest, safest, and most joyful possible birth experience.

Great info!.......2007-09-27
I bought this book as part of my DONA certification and thoroughly enjoyed reading it! It easily defined my role as a Doula and by the end, I was even more convinced of the value of having a Doula at each birth!!
From the last few weeks of pregnancy to the first weeks at home, women and their families benefit from the care and knowledge a Doula provides, and this book lays that out beyond a doubt. Wonderful Book!

FANTASTIC READING! I'll gladly use this seller again........2007-03-10
"The Doula Book" is a fantastic choice for those who are considering having a professional labor assistant to be present, either at your birth, or after. This book is FULL of knowledge!!! I love it and often refer back to it.
(Since you are here, you may want to read the below if you are unsure what a "Doula" is. It is taken from the Doulas of North America International (DONA) website.)
Quote:
What is a Doula?
A Doula is a knowledgeable, experienced companion - who stays with you through labor, birth and beyond.
"Birth Doulas" offer emotional support, encouragement and wisdom throughout labor and birth.
"Postpartum Doulas" support women and families through the transformation that a new baby brings to a family.
End Quote
In my personal opinion, if you are in search of a Doula, or, if you are a Doula yourself, I wish you all the very best in your precious moments that you will experience. And, with that said, I leave you with the following empowering quote:
"You can do anything in life you set your mind to, provided it is powered by your heart."
-- Doug Firebaugh
Huntsville, AL doula review on birthing assistants.......2006-08-25
Considering that I am a doula myself, this book was on the top of my list for referencing. The title really does tell it all. This book gives an in depth look at doulas as birth partners & goes into detail on how one can help you have a better birth. In fact, if you choose not to hire a doula, this book can guide you or your partner in self-help comfort measures. More than likely after reading all the advantages of having a doula to assist you in labor, you'll want to seek one out near you. Buy this book to find out as much as you can about this new movement sweeping our nation! You may even want to be a doula yourself after reading what a difference you can make for other women. This is a required reading for some doula trainees & well worth the price for all of its insight as well as medical studies showing the value of doulas. Check it out!
The Doula Book: How a trained labor companion can help you have a shorter, easier, and healthier birth.......2006-07-27
This book is very easy to read. It is well-written, well laid out, very well researched. There is an excellent chapter concerning the role of the father in the labor room. A lot of their observations are based on what they observed in a hospital in Ireland. There are statistics but not too many, enough to be convincing: they haven't overstated the case for doulas: their claims of an easier, shorter, healthier birth are not outlandish but well presented and backed up by good solid research. Apart from all that it is an easy read.
Good for research.......2006-07-15
I was a bit bored with this book, only becasue I already knew all the stuff in it. With the exception of a few chapters the book goes way far into detail about things could care less about. If you are trying to research and learn about doulas, than this is your book. There are lots of studie on the benifits of doulas.
