Book Description
Though management expert Margaret J. Wheatley works with an unusually broad variety of clients, from Fortune 100 CEOs to ministers, she points out that they all struggle to maintain integrity, humanity, and effectiveness in a relentlessly fast-paced, technology-driven world. Credited with establishing a fundamentally new approach to leadership based on living systems theory — or, as she puts it, "how Life organizes" — Wheatley shares her first-ever compendium of essays about her real-world experiences helping clients introduce more authentic, life-affirming practices into their organizations. Essays cover a wide scope of topics including leadership strategies, raising children in turbulent times, and the role of communities in the lives of organizations. Finding Our Way is filled with a wealth of practical advice on applying the ideas in Wheatley's groundbreaking books and has particular relevance for managers, administrators, and leaders who are trying to run their organizations in more progressive, egalitarian, and effective ways.
Customer Reviews:
Reaching toward holism.......2007-10-06
Margaret Wheatley offers reflective essays that are both intellectual and heartfully personal. She reminds us that organizations are full of people struggling to be whole, and hence the best way to create healthy, well-functioning organizations (be they companies, schools, or community groups) is to adopt a holistic approach. (Holistic is actually my word, not Wheatley's, but the text speaks in that way to me). Holism in this context is about inclusion, respect, accepting the messiness of relationships, and always thinking in a larger context rather than getting burdened with trivialities. Life actually knows how to solve problems just fine -- it is usually our own attempts at controlling and planning that interfere with the natural process. Wheatley's essays offer relief to the anxious minds of leaders who think they have to know everything, be fully in charge, and "create" the future.
Visionary.......2007-05-12
Margaret J Wheatley beautifully weaves the compassion of a wise woman with the insight of a true visionary to deliver a very moving message. The new paradigm of leadership Ms. Wheatley describes embraces all citizens, creates harmony, and compels each member to become their best authentic self. Regardless of your structure: business, family, corporate, or government, your environment will benefit from this philosophy, individually and collectively. I found a shift in my perspective and the tools to take it to the streets. Ms. Wheatleys elegant writing inspires us to be better and do better.
refreshing honesty.......2007-01-31
Some reviewers have called for a "management book" -- that's the last thing we need. What I love about Wheatley is that she goes where no one else goes, and creates a path. For that reason, I use this book with my senior seminar leadership students in an effort to send them out into the world to do the same.
Disappointing.......2006-06-02
I was all set to fall in love with Finding Our Way: Leadership in Uncertain Times by Margaret Wheatley. A friend had recommended Wheatley, and I have spent the last several years researching the interplay between systems thinking, connectionism, quality, leadership and learning. I've been reading Deming, Keynes, Bateson, Prigogine and Karl Polanyi. I had just come out of a three week period of intensive training, leading and facilitating a group of software users in gathering user requirements and system modeling. The book was brand new and available at the library.
Finding Our Way is, unfortunately, a compendium of nebulous generalities. In trying to make the case for self-organizing systems as models for human organization, the "new story" falls short. I can't help but note that mobs, riots and panics are self-organizing.
The ideas may be relevant and Wheatley's descriptions of current conditions seem accurate, but the presentation and writing style make for a rather mushy, second-rate management book. Maybe I've been spoiled by the fabulous work of the writers cited above. I fear the author misses the irony of Thera, her model "nature-based" civilization, being destroyed by a volcano.
I had been hoping for a more specific, detailed, and perhaps case-based book on how to actually lead in the midst of chaos. Perhaps, as other reviewers have indicated, her other books are more serious, and I will certainly take a stab at Leadership and the New Science. Finding Our Way does have this to recommend it: it's so fluffy, one can probably get through it at one sitting.
Good!.......2006-02-06
This book is very impressive because of the writer's attitude towords the world. Good for everybody who read this book!

Customer Reviews:
A caring, compassionate author in general.......2007-02-16
I did appreciate this book. The only point that kept me from giving it a full five star rating was this: the author referred to the "predictable"
deaths of parents and grandparents, and implying such passings are not as
shocking as losing a child. That's dangerous territory: making comparisons involving grief. I've experienced that all deaths in my family have been shocking, like an egg suddenly cracking in your fist. Regardless of longtime illness or whatever reason why my loved ones departed, I always hoped there would have been one more day, one more hour, one more moment with them; yes, grief is greedy and I own up to it. Greed and grief over my loss co-exist with my basic trust in God and a freeing afterlife, and I perceive them all as gifts. My mother recently died at the age of 91 and I am 54. It doesn't matter to me whether she was 91 or 591 years old, nor if I am 54 or merely 4. For me, it was a shock; it was a loss; it was suffering -- such as, during the first weeks the endless reliving in my mind and dreams, her physical and mental agonies of Alzheimer's. Being her full-time caregiver over the past years produced a drawn-out grief that did nothing to lessen the ultimate grief of losing her. My family members felt more or less as this author did. Thus, I find it very helpful to explore a myriad of books on grief, because some will be closer to your own thoughts and feelings than others. Those are the books I will continute to re-read. Even if I know intellectually that the passing of older generations is natural, I myself need to come to that decision in whatever time is right for me. My condolences to every reviewer here who is grieving.
When There are No Words.......2007-01-10
Written with real feeling. Lets the reader understand their feelings.
when there are no words.......2006-07-25
My husband & I lost our 1st son on 10/31/98 in an auto
accident and was given this book from a friend trying
to help us with this tragic loss. It was the turning point
to dealing with our grief. Tragically we lost our only other
son in an accident on 04/24/03. We have been thru grief re-covery classes, read several books on grief but always came
back to this book. Throughout these years we have been able
to help others by giving them this book of encouragement
and understanding during the grief process. If you could
pass this along to the author, Charlie Walton, we would
appreciate this very much! God has given us the Grace to
see us thru the grief process, this book and friends!
When there are no words.......2006-07-03
My son died 6 months ago. This book was recommended by the parent of someone who had lost their daughter. So far this has been the only book that I have been able to read and fully relate to. This father articulates all that I feel and cannot express. I would recommend reading this if you have lost someone close, especially a child - and certainly would recommend giving it to someone you know who has lost someone.
A Very Personal Story of Loss.......2006-06-24
Thank you, Charlie Walton, for sharing your very personal story of loss. Writing this book must have been a painful experience, but take comfort in knowing that it has been of tremendous value to this reader. I would describe it as an intimate, one-on-one conversation with someone who has been to hell and back. The author gives a play-by-play of his innermost thoughts and emotions as he tries to process his grief in different situations. I found his advice, which sometimes contradicts popular wisdom, to be right on the money. It's an effortless read, written in an unpolished and completely accessible style which adds to its humanness. There are no sermons, no absolutes, no checklists; just a heartfelt and very personal story of a man who wants to share his grief experience so others might benefit. I'd highly recommend adding this book to your self-help collection.

very good.......2007-03-08
This book is helpful to us ozzies (those without bipolar) and lets you know that what you are experiencing is not unusual. that others are going through exactly what you are also.
One Way Ticket to Kansas.......2006-09-14
This book is a must have for all people who have a borderline person in their life. This book is an easy read and captures the true feelings a person without borderline personality disorder is experiencing. It has helped validate me as a person and has allowed me to move on. I highly recommend this book !!
A Must Read, Essential If You Care About Someone With BPD.......2006-07-15
In my opinion this is hands down the best book out there for dealing with someone with borderline personality disorder. Yes, there is SWOE and other books that are out there, but One Way Ticket To Kansas is the only book that I have come across that is writen from the perspective of a spouse. It is also the only book out there that explains in detail the eratic and seriouly disturbed behaviors the person with BPD directs at the person they are most intimately close to, the spouse. The information in One Way Ticket To Kansas is easy to read, entertaining, and the author has a knack for explaining the complexities of bpd in easy to understand terms. While the book is sensitive to the person with bpd, it also does not pull any punches either and gives an honest look at the effects to caring about someone with bpd. This book will make many light bulbs go off in your head, and help you realize that you have had the power all along to find happiness. It's empowering to the reader and focusses specifically on the reader, not the person with bpd. Once you start reading this book you will not want to put it down. Then you will read it again as you will emotionally connect with the author about so many aspect of your life. This is a must have book.
This is one you have to read if you're dealing with BPD.......2006-06-29
Deals with the problem headon. Most of the ride to kansas will feel like your life story. You won't know till you read it but it's true. My opinion: we who are dealing with BPD don't realize how much we need to work on ourselves. Don't let BPD distract you from yourself. Yes, their problems are worst but only for them. Our problems are driving us crazy but they are hard to see because of the activities of the BP.
Remember the old saying: You first put the oxygen mask on yourself, then you can help others. Otherwise, there is not enough time for you to live.
This is a must have BPD book!.......2006-03-22
Finally, a book about borderline personality disorder that I could relate to. I have read them all: Stop Walking on Eggshells, Sometimes I Act Crazy, I Hate You Dont Leave Me, etc. None of them relayed information to me in a way that I felt connected to the author. Rather, the other books threw out the information in a very dry fashion, seemingly putting me to sleep. I retained very little from them. The facilitator of my support group suggested that I read One Way Ticket To Kansas. Oh my gosh, this book just blew me away. It explained bpd in a way that I understood and retained. The author used personal examples from his own life and I found myself crying as I finally felt like someone understood exactly what I was going through. There it was in print, the very things I have been experiencing over the last 3 years! Although the author presented wonderful information, he made it very clear that the journey and decision on that journey were in the hands of me, the reader. It sends a very empowering message that you can take control of your life and that the decisions are truly yours to make. If you are dealing with someone with bpd and are looking for useful information, this book has to top your list. If I could rate it 10 stars I would.

What can I say?.......2007-03-21
What can I say? This is Tom Brown Jr. He's THE man on tracking and outdoor survival. For anyone who loves the outdoors, who respects the outdoors, this is a must read. If you have never heard of Tom Brown Jr., go to the beginning. Go read his first book "The Tracker" and understand where Tom is coming from. Once you get hooked on Tom, you can't stop reading him.
great book.......2007-01-11
this is a great book!!! probably the best of all the tom brown books. 'the way of the scout' reminded me of my younger days of running around in the woods. many times, i evaded people and slipped through places unseen. many times, i had been right under caretaker's, security, and law enforcement's noses and came close to being caught. this book is similar to those kind of things i did, although, i never took things as far or as hardcore like tom and rick did with stalking wolf! great stories in this one and definitely worth reading over and over again. the way of the scout is definitely a way of life that fits me!
WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!! TRITE NONSENSE.......2006-11-16
Let me start by saying I have read THE TRACKER, and my son has attended the Tracker School.
I also have a lifetime ( I'm 65) of outdoor experience. When my son came back from Tracker School bursting with enthusiasm to attend the Scout course ( which is preceeded by a mandatory minimum of 3 other courses @ $700 a pop) I was at first enthused as well. He was 18, had been on numerous wilderness camping and sometimes hunting trips with me., so I took him seriously... big mistake.
I read this book in one evening, making notes as I went.Anyone with a modicum of common sense and outdoor experience would pick out flaw after flaw in this immature pile of plain fiction, covered with a trite layer of "ancient wise Indian" pseudophilosphy.
I am truly suprised, and not a little concerned that the other reviewers,in the main, failed to detect the Hardy Boys/ Tarzan self inflating just plain nonsense in these pages.
Doubters should go straight to the section where he tracks an evil Killer, Survival Expert Black Belt, blah, blah ,blah for 14 days before disabling him. It only takes him another 3 DAYS to miraculously return the Killer to where they started(Hmmmm). There he finds the 2 cops he outdistanced at the beginning patiently waiting ( this is now 17 Days LATER).
Brown doesnt even lie well. My son will NOT be going to SCOUT school
Agree with the Casteneda comparison.......2004-11-29
though what I think of Casteneda is another story.
All about Brown said in that review being true, this was still a fascinating read with insight to a more humble, thoughtful and grounded spirituality then all that Casteneda psychedelic pretentiousness. Brown's own shortcomings are easily separated from the message, which is simply about living as one with the earth, without ego.
A hilarious book on the scout's psychological warfare........2004-07-10
Brown is definitely not the best writer, but this book is delightful! The stories of the scout's psychological warfare are hilarious. I wanna be a scout! This is not a skills book but Tom Brown's stories about the Way of the Scout, which he now teaches at his tracker school.

Book Description
For the longest time, during some rough boyhood years in Alabama and the grind of performing on the road, the odds against me were discouraging. But there was always a voice inside telling me it was going to get better.
Mom and Dad certainly started out with good intentions, but early on, as their marriage went south and I went in whatever direction was necessary to avoid the fallout, I realized my life was going to be up to me.
Thinking back, my first step toward singing for a living was stealing an Otis Redding album when I was nine. What I heard on that platter was life-changing, and pretty soon I was learning to play the harmonica, which, I can assure you, didn’t attract many female fans—in fact, any fans at all.
I eventually decided that not being taken seriously can be a good thing. It stokes the fires. Maybe the reason I like soul music so much is that it inspires with its pain. The best artists, like Ray Charles, reach out and say, “You’re not alone, brother.”
In all my years on the road—trying to make it in Nashville and those Southern honky-tonks known as the “Chitlin Circuit”—I never thought it would take an act of God to push my destiny into the right groove. But as you’ll hear, it was nearly getting washed away by Hurricane Katrina that led to my Idol tryout. And what happened next was a little bit like when Alice dropped down that rabbit hole—just substitute Simon Cowell for the Mad Hatter.
In Heart Full of Soul, I share some life stories that will hopefully inspire you—give you a sense of my philosophy and how it drove me. For example, I talk about my good friend who died in a tragic accident and the prediction he made that tugged at my thoughts throughout Idol’s qualifying rounds. I also discuss what it was like when I realized Eminem has it right: when you only have one shot, you’d better lose yourself in the music.
A lot of great fans lined up behind me the night of the Idol finale. This book is about the strange path that led me to that pop-culture moment, and the sharp directional changes that occurred after that phenomenal night, including touring America, producing an album, and experiencing that two-sided gig known as American celebrity.
I hope that some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way will help you, especially if the shot you’ve been yearning for is just around the corner.

Full of integrity and guts.......2007-09-26
Taylor Hicks book was so heartwarming to me. He has true moxie because he made it on his own without much support in his childhood. I loved him on American Idol and I am happy to know him better through his book.
Wonderful bio of Taylor .......2007-09-23
This book was well written with many humorus lines, giving a real insight to who Taylor Hicks really is and what he has endured to follow his dream. We, who are avid fans, are glad that he never gave up. He is truly unique and inspiring, both musically and personally. Oh, and lest I forget, he is most definitely easy on the eyes and seeing him live in person is an unforgetable experience.
Taylor Hicks- My American Idol........2007-09-07
I was real excited to read this book as it had been a year since I had read any book due to loss of vision. Now that I have my "Reader" I chose this book. It was an easy read and moved right along. I really enjoyed hearing about his life and all the things that went on during his ride to be the American Idol. There was some good photos in it also.
Heart Full of Soul and Taylor has it!!.......2007-09-03
I loved Taylor's book in both the hardback and audio versions. Hearing Taylor's voice telling his own story is amazing. Taylor's life journey to this point is incredible. He has certainly "paid his dues" and is very deserving of all of the good things that are coming his way since he was discovered! Anyone reading this book would be inspired to never give up because you never know what the future holds. I for one have been uplifted by his message.
Like the rest of Taylor's career: soon to be in a bargain bin.......2007-09-01
It's obvious that the majority of reviews written for this skimpy and hollow book are written by Taylor's fans. That's fine. People who are really into their AI faves usually have no sense of blind fanboyism and will highly rate anything that their idol puts out. The fact of the matter, however, is that Hicks' career has been a flop, both in terms of comparing it to other AI contestants (save for Justin Guarini's and Corey Clark's) and on its very own. The guy couldn't eke out a career before Idol, and now in the aftermath of winning it, it looks like he's still not making any headway.
This book attempts to wring out any last popularity the guy may have. The problem is, only the fans are going to buy it and declare it as wonderful, while everyone else will simply pass it by, knowing full well that the story inside will well be forgotten a few months from now. Hicks may well have been AI's biggest anomaly as far as its grand prize winners went, but it looks like it was all for naught. So don't be surprised when you start seeing this book being dumped by the truckloads into bargain book warehouse stores and the like. While Hicks may have had honest and noble intentions behind his AI career, the fact is the young and ever-fickle audience the show is geared towards just aren't interested in the long haul.

Not bad . ........2007-06-13
But didn't make any kind of profound effect on me. Just ok, the usual motivational stuff - just from a different person.
Awakened... enlightened.......2007-04-10
Phenominal book! I completely felt connected to the author as if she was writing about me or to me. Dr. Barbara De Angelis's words magically touched and inspired me. It is a book i know that i will read again and again, because life & love will continue to have unexpected turns...
deserves 10 stars.......2007-01-08
f i could give this book 10 stars i would! this has got to be one of the most positive and uplifting books I have ever read. It was written not only from the heart but from the soul. It is a wonderful book for anyone going through a crisis especially, but really any person can really benefit from reading this book. I couldn't put it down!
brilliant!.......2006-10-24
I usual hate the preachy,love-all, open your heart kinda stuff. This book bypasses that whole " be good" stuff and gives it to you like it is. I am going through a horrid phase of my life and this book has done wonders for my mood. Its very uplifting and in these times I can do with the kind of message she delivers. What I like the best is that she truly gets how a person feels and the diffrent kind of situations one can find themselves in. This book is truly inspiring.
Beverly DeAngelis's first loser.......2006-02-03
I can't believe it! A book from Beverly DeAngelis I don't like! I'm shocked and very disappointed.
When I pick up one of her books, I expect to be able to sink my teeth into some practical life advice, backed up by solid psychology. Not so this book!
How Did I Get Here is filled with esoteric, quasi metaphysical cum Christian mumbo jumbo, with a whole lot of self-validation. (Lots of testimonials on how great she is - very disappointing.) It's like she's thinking out loud, or having a discussion with a room full of PhDs with a contest to see who can use the biggest words. Every chapter could be distilled into one paragraph, and the rest is fluff and repetition.
If that weren't bad enough, the copyright is 2005, so I have a bad feeling this may be her new writing stye.
Has success spoiled Beverly DeAngelis? Is she gunning for an honorary PhD somewhere and this is her thesis?
This one I'm skimming, then donating. I'm picky about what I keep on my shelves.
Book Description
Finding the Hero in Your Husband is an essential tool for understanding the Christian concept of submission-a frequently misunderstood and often contentious subject. Dr. Slattery combines Christian principles, her professional expertise as a psychologist, and personal experience as a wife in this indispensable book to help women improve their marriages.
When expectations of trust and intimacy go unfulfilled, a wife's anger and fear can result in unhealthy domination and control. The power of a woman's approval and perspective in a relationship cannot be underestimated; it must be directed in ways that promote intimacy instead of destroying it. Dr. Slattery advocates that the key to a successful Christian marriage is a wife's ability to encourage her husband to develop his leadership role in the marriage and her ability to avoid boredom in the bedroom. (The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men are sexually dysfunctional.)
In Finding the Hero in Your Husband, Dr. Slattery uses illustrative case studies and scriptural guidelines to answer many essential questions and explain difficult and sometimes unpopular but relevant concepts to help Christian women improve their relationships. Each chapter concludes with questions for reflection and discussion, making it ideal for both individual reading and group study.
Customer Reviews:
Chapter 3 is especially wonderful!.......2007-09-25
Julianna Slattery defines submission in such an excellent way. It is empowerment. Her clarifications are very clear. It is easy to begin implementing the proper course to follow and the results are readily harvestable. When can the Nobel Prize be specifically extended to healers of the family?
A must read..........2006-11-10
This is an excellent book. I recommend that everyone read this book whether you are just getting married or been married for 50 years. It helped me a lot. My marriage is getting better because I practice what she writes in this book!!!
Hero.......2006-07-17
It is a very informative book, and looks at the marital relationship from both points of view - from husbands view and wifes view. I like the fact that it is unbiased, quite often we buy books to re-inforce our own perceptions and ideas in order to justify the way we think and what we believe, but this is a challenge to both men and womens way of thinking. Bible based and edifying at the same time.
Wonderful insights!.......2004-11-10
This book, with all of its scriptural references, is a real treasure and sheds brilliant light on the unique role of being a Christian wife. I am in a 2nd marriage (married 6 months) and want very much to head this marriage down the path that God intends. I read several passages to my husband, who is also a Christian, and he agreed that Dr. Slattery has provided accurate insights to the needs of husbands. This book just "jumped off" the bookstore shelf. When I read the foreword and introduction to the book, I realized the challenge I have of being a woman with a strong personality who also desires to be a partner and an encourager, would be addressed in this book. Dr. Slattery did a great job of encouraging me to be all God would have me to be while also acknowledging my husband's role as "head of our household". Her understanding and interpretation of God's Word on this subject is encouraging and freeing! I am purchasing additional books for my female friends and family members. I highly recommend that wives AND their husbands read this book; it is a wonderful basis for discussion that can bring renewed energy and intimacy to a marriage.
A little soul searching..........2004-04-13
This is an amazing book! Yes, Julie deals with submission, but more than anything she drives home the point that we are each responsible for our own actions. The moral behind the book is similar to the old saying, "Don't SEARCH for the perfect friend; BECOME the perfect friend!" It is something that is so easy for anyone (in this case, wives) to forget--it is easy to blame all of your problems or arguments on the things that your husband does wrong. Julie helps the reader to take responsibility for her own actions and attitudes. Wives should encourage, not manipulate; pray for their husbands, not nag them. She opened my eyes about so many things that I had been doing without even thinking about them! Thanks, Julie!

Enter this laboratory of prayer and experimenet with the author as your coach, and you will surely discover new parts of your soul and ways to express love in the world.
A Recipe Book Not A Gourmet Meal.......2003-12-21
Finally, I can begin to stop feeling guilty or deficient because I don't get up at 3am and pray on my knees for hours on a stone floor in the cold!Trisha Brown encourages us to explore and find the "how to pray" that works for us as individuals...maybe the stone floor one time, maybe the stream of consciousness conversation while driving down the road at another time.
I lead an adult education group at the church where I serve as DRE and we've been using this book as a resource and guide as we explore "ways and means" of prayer. We have been making our own sets of Anglican prayer beads, a new concept to many of the participants, and in the creation and construction of them we've discovered that that too is a way of prayer.
Thank you, Trisha, for helping to free us from "the one way" and opening doors to deeper, very personal ways to develop our relationship with a living God.
I learned so much!.......2003-12-19
This is a wonderful book on prayer. I learned over 40 ways to pray to God including the Wesley Covenant Prayer, Prayer Beads, the Tallith (the Jewish Prayer Shawl) and so many more. I now have a deeper and wider appreciation of the history of the Church. Thank you for this fine book.
worth reading.......2003-12-17
For th ose of us who want to learn how to pray...better, so to speak, this is a helpful book. I didn't realize there were so many "pathways."
Book Description
How the mysterious nine-pointed symbol of the enneagram illuminates the worst pitfalls and highest virtues of our psyches.
The Enneagram of Passions and Virtues elucidates human experience beyond the personality structure. In the tradition of the enneagram, the Virtues are said to be the affective atmosphere that replaces the compulsive and reactive emotional patterns-called the Passions-as one becomes freer of the ego.
Sandra Maitri shows how the shift in our consciousness, or soul, from being informed by the Passions to being informed by the Virtues, is one of the hallmarks of inner development. In this book, Maitri explores how our awareness of the Passions, in turn, leads to the manifestation of the Virtues. This shift supports rowth on the level of personality as well as on the level of what is beyond-Being, or True Nature.
Maitri is widely known as one of the most literate and indepth writers and teachers on the uses of the enneagram as a tool of inner development. In this book she provides what can be for some an entry into inner work, and for others, who have been engaged in the journey for a longer time, a uniquely incisive explication of concepts they may have missed.

Freudean Enneagram.......2005-07-28
Excellent review with a Freudean twist of the "Seven Deadly + 2 Sins". Was hoping for more insight of the underlying processes inherent in the Enneagram symbol that Gurdjieff, Bennett, Ouspensky and Vollmer discuss and how that relates to traversing the Enneagon.
