Book Description
John A. Van de Walle has written a book that helps readers make sense of mathematics and become confident in their ability to teach mathematics to children K to 8. Elementatry and Middle School Mathematics consists of 16 chapters reflecting the view that all mathematics can be taught through a problem-solving approach that motivates children and builds their confidence as they learn. This book thoroughly discusses the new standards and clearly develops four key aspects of teaching mathematics: the nature of mathematics as a science of pattern and order; an understanding of how children learn mathematics; a problem solving view of teaching mathematics; and specific methods for integrating assessment with instruction. Simple yet effective classroom activities are woven throughout the chapters as well as suggestions for technology and literature.

Math teacher must have!.......2007-06-09
This was a required text for a M.Ed. class. The practices in this book are almost perfectly aligned with Massachusetts frameworks and the Connnected Math Project (CMP) text used by my district (Lowell). This book is very rich with lesson plan fodder and takes pains to explain the 'why' of CMP as well as the how. I'll be relying on this book for years to come.
A great resource.......2007-04-10
This book is a great resource when planning lessons. I am a first-year Fifth Grade teacher and this book has proven invaluable to me when it comes to breaking down lessons into sequential activities. Another larger textbook was recommended to me, but comparatively, this book is concise and is very practical.
useless.......2007-02-18
My teacher hasn't even had us open the book yet. No assignments from it either. If we were not going to use the book i would have liked to know and saved my self $100. But I'm sure its a good book i just haven't used it.
Prompt Delivery.......2007-02-14
I received this product in a bout a week. It arrived just in time for me needing it for class. Thank you.
Get the newest edition if possible!.......2007-01-10
Get the newest edition if you need this book for a class. You will get lost if you get this edition. Other than that... the book was helpful in using other methods other than algorithms.

Best teacher guide EVER.......2007-09-15
This booklet provides vastly more instruction on the nitty-gritty of what teachers need in the classroom. Thank you!
Marzano is a must read........2007-09-10
I wish I would have heard of Robert Marzano my first year of teaching. This book explains the research behind the classroom instruction and gives you ideas of what you should do. This is a great book to have with the "Handbook for Classroom Instruction that Works".
Great resource!.......2007-05-12
After hearing so much in teacher in-services about "Marzano strategies" I decided to check out his work myself. I was struck by the simple fact they are not his strategies as people talk about. Instead, they are research supported strategies that he and other authors/researchers have compiled and shrunk down into some user-friendly nuggets. The book is very easy to read, provides ample sources of real research, and is practical. The layout is great and the content superb. It is an excellent resource for teachers looking to improve their instruction based on reliable and somewhat traditional methods.
Solid Resource for Educators.......2007-03-17
Provides tangible ideas that any educator can take into the classroom. I would also recommend any book by Kelly Gallagher.
Marzano's Classroom Instruction That Works.......2007-01-09
An excellent text for the first time teacher. Provides techniques and examples to assist in implementation of the techniques. Gives you more teaching tools for your toolbox. Easy to read, taking one chapter at a time. I highly recommend the book.

Dynamic Physical Education for Elementary School Children, 14th Edition.......2005-08-28
This is an excellent aide in learning how to teach physical eduation to elementary school students. Pangrazi is an excellent author and essential information and helpful tips to teach physical education. Overall, this book is the most useful and I am definately not selling it back.

I didn't need this anymore.

Dynamic Physical Education.......2002-06-25
I have used this book for two years now and found it helpful with lots of practical information. Implementing the lessons will require the lesson plans(not included) to fully utilize the contents of the book. This book is Sport based and Standards based. There are 36 weekly lessons which gives the program lots of structure. The author assumes you have enough space (indoor & outdoor) to teach the program. The cost of equipment can be high although there is a pretty good section on "How to make your own" equipment. I believe this book is a good resource, chapters are organized and mirror the weekly lesson plan book.
Quality of Content........2001-09-28
I have this book, and really think that it has a vast ray of information that helps the Physical Education Teacher prepare a developmentally appropriate Lesson.

Social Studies Methods Textbook.......2006-11-05
This book is excellent for college students preparing to teach Elementary Ed in any school, public or private. I highly recommend it! It's a book you won't want to sell after you use it, because it's a great book to refer back to once you begin your teaching career.
This is a good, practical book.......2002-05-15
I liked this book, it gave many practical examples for teachers to use in the classroom. Social studies is generally a factual subject which can be very boring. This books helps to give you creative ideas for social studies content.
Not very helpful........1999-08-11
I am not too pleased with the usefulness of this text for teaching Social Studies Methods. The book gives many examples of teaching methods for social studies but the book lacks depth or how-to-ness. Okay for a general overview but not much substance. It lacks an overall philosophy or guiding theory. Students reading this text are left to sort through a variety of methods and come to their own decisions about what will work and not work in the classroom. I would rather have seen more of what the current research suggest about teaching than leaving all of the sence making to the reader.

Book Description
With its balanced approach to reading instruction, Reading and Learning to Read, 5/e, remains a comprehensive, active learning tool that encourages students to teach reading in ways that are both meaningful and reflective. Rather than emphasizing a traditional skills-based approach, this book focuses on teaching skills within a meaning-centered approach. This includes an emphasis on literature-based reading instruction, the integration of technology into the teaching of reading, and the integration of reading and writing instruction.
This book continues to promote a contemporary, balanced approach to teaching reading and writing with a renewed emphasis on integrating technology, accommodating the needs of diverse learners, and teaching the middle school young adolescent. Given the increasingly focused interest on literacy standards in the teaching of reading world-wide, this edition also highlights practical examples and references that exemplify the International Reading Associations Standards for Reading Professionals. User friendly marginal icons highlight each of these new features, making them easy to locate for classroom discussion. Additionally, this updated edition features a new section in each chapter that discusses pertinent issues regarding struggling with readers, a recurring concern of classroom teachers. Web sites are also included at the end of each chapter that direct the reader to online practical resources on a variety topics.
Designed for anyone interested in elementary reading methods, reading in the elementary school, and developmental reading.

Reading and Learning to Read.......2007-09-09
A concise text explaining everything an educator needs to know to develop and expand a literacy program.
refreshing and up to date.......2006-06-29
I found this book very useful. It helped me make the transition from teaching English as L1 to English as a Second Language. The text contains many strategies and activities that have proven effective and can be applied to ESL and is also useful for teachers reviewing for their certification exams.
Excellent Reading Instruction Beginners Book.......2003-10-24
This is one of the most comprehensive and interesting books I had ever come across in my educational career. The authors not only teach the basics of reading instruction, but put forth a plethora of differing strategies/methods for application in the elementary and middle grade classrooms.
Great resource for future teachers or parents!.......2000-06-03
This book is written very well and is very informative. I found this book to be a great tool for teachers. I read this book for a class and I felt that it kept my interest and made for easy reading material. This book provides parents and/or teachers with insight on how to help children learn to read. This book also includes many great activities and strategies to use to strengthen and encourage literacy (no matter what age the student is). I have tested many of the activities on students myself, and found that it made teaching and learning to read more enjoyable for everyone involved. Overall, I thought this book was great. I plan on keeping it as a resource in my classroom or even in my own home.

integrating arts .......2007-10-02
a bit slower on the delivery than expected, but the item is in great condition!
Not what I expected.......2006-08-12
I ordered "Integrating the Arts Across the Elementary School Curriculum" and "Art and Cognition: Integrating the Visual Arts in the Curriculum"and "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum". I was so disappointed to see this book had only a small section at the end of the book describing any lesson plans to use integrating art in the curriculum, and the book cost $55.00! I thought for that price I would have had a book full of information I could use in my classroom. I would not buy this book again, in fact I would like to get a refund. Surprisingly, "Arts as Meaning Makers, The: Integrating Literature and the Arts Throughout the Curriculum" turned out to be much more informative and useful and it was only $6.97.
Must have book for teachers!.......2005-06-15
For some teachers, the idea of integrating the arts into the elementary classroom may seem daunting. The beauty of Gelineau's book is that she provides teachers with both the tools and activities necessary to make the transition seem far less overwhelming. There are sections devoted to each of the arts and within each section there are descriptors for all the elements that make up each art form. One of the most interesting things about this book is the introduction Gelineau gives at the beginning of each chapter. There is usually a definition of the art form as well as a historical perspective. Gelineau's book is completely user friendly in that it not only clarifies the concepts, but then offers clear activities for immediate implementation. All a teacher needs to do is to become comfortable with the arts. This is easy to do once you embrace the belief that the educational value of the arts lies in the doing and not in the outcome. The book is divided into seven sections. Chapters one and two deal with the power of the arts, while chapters three through seven discuss the specific art forms and how to integrate them into an elementary or middle school curriculum. Chapter seven entitled Making Connections gives some great ideas for connecting the arts to specific content areas. Because of it's easy to follow format and straightforward ideas; this book is truly a "must" for the teacher that wishes to incorporate the arts into a curriculum.

This book is pretty good with becoming an effective literacy teacher. Many of the different strategies given are good to know for your own classroom. This book was helpful because I used it in conjunction with other materials to study for the RICA and I passed. This version is just as good with the newest edition.
