THE WINTER KNIGHTS, telling of a giant city home to the Edgeworld's academics and headed by the Knights Academy where the best come to study. Student Quint, son of a sky pirate, faces his first year and the cold of winter: when disaster strikes, a band of friends joins forces to prevent trouble in this riveting adventure. Both will prove popular picks with their eye-catching covers and fantasy-based action.

5 out of 5 stars The Quint Saga continues.......2007-03-19

"The Winter Knights" is another must-read installment of the amazing series "The Edge Chronicles". Picking up the story from the end of The Curse of the Gloamglozer (The Edge Chronicles, Book 4), this penultimate book of the Quint Saga covers the apprenticeship of young Quintinius Verginix at the prestigious Knights Academy, where he is chosen to continue his studies as the protégé of the Professor of Light.

Separated from his friend Maris and also from his father, Quint makes some new friends, and at least one bitter and dangerous enemy. The first part of the book deals with normal school endeavors such as prowlgrin rearing, skycraft model making and home room, but the Knights Academy is also riddled with intrigue, corruption and deceit, with conspirators lurking around every corner.

Winter has settled on Sanctaphrax, and the Hall Master of High Cloud is predicting the arrival of a Great Storm. Unfortunately, it's been a long time coming, and the cold is taking its toll on the floating rock. One after the other, the brave Knights Academic set off in their ships to retrieve precious stormphrax, without which the great rock would break loose of its moorings and float off to Open Sky.

It's soon up to Quint and his friends, the so-called "Winter Knights" to save the day, and the second part of the story is the most gripping, action-packed and bloody of the series so far. Murder, mayhem and treachery mixed with fierce battles and monster hunting lead to a cliff-hanger ending. If you're a fan of The Edge Chronicles, this is not one to be missed.

The Curse of the Gloamglozer (The Edge Chronicles, Book 4)

5 out of 5 stars Another great installation.......2007-03-15

The Winter Nights (Edge Chronicles #8) is another great installation to the series. What I love about this book and the rest of the series is that each book could easily stand on its own or be read in any order, but when you put them all together, details from one or another book come out, showing the in depth connection of everything that happens in life.

As an adult I would definatly recommend this book to other adults as well as children.

5 out of 5 stars Edge fans will love this one..........2006-05-04

I actually ordered this book from Amazon.uk-- couldn't wait for the latest installment in the Edge Chronicles to be released in the USA.

I thought this was one of the best Edge books. A caution-- these books aren't appropriate for very young children. Older kids will really enjoy them. (Adults, too!)

4 out of 5 stars Endless adventures on the Edge.......2006-04-30

If you like to go into the impossible and dare to go into danger, this is the book for you. This book talks about Quint, an apprentice of two of the most powerful people around where he lives. He figures out a way to save his beloved floating city (Sanctaphrax) from flowing into an eternal winter. As you continue reading, Quint's life starts to unveil itself, and he does things he never thought he could do before. The Winter Knights is a guaranteed page turner!

1 out of 5 stars Holiday Princess.......2006-03-11

I usually like Meg Cabot, but this book was a waste of my money. It is boring and not half as good as I expected of Cabot. The Princess Diaries Books, as oppose to the series, are just not worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Holiday Princess.......2005-12-26

We're either approaching or all ready knee deep in the holiday season, depending on your point of view. Many of us feel overwhelmed by this time of year, but don't worry, Princess Mia is here to rescue us.

With her usual flair, Ms. Cabot has penned an amusing guide to all the holidays and variations thereof celebrated in the Christmas season around the world. Despite the light tone, this is actually a very informative book. I guarantee that unless you have studied holidays in depth, you'll learn something and enjoy yourself while doing it. Most of the characters we've come to love in the other Princess books contribute to this volume; Lily, Grandmere, Michael, Mr. G, Mia's mother, friends, baby brother, and of course, the Princess herself. If you just need to take a break from the onslaught of chaos, then no matter how old you are, grab this book and smile.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Mia's take on celebrating the holidays.......2005-12-16

Back again with another addition to the Princess Diaries series, Princess Mia invites us to share the holidays with her and the family in her witty rendition of what happens during the holidays. Loaded with advice from everyone closely associated with her, each chapter is also laden with her own views and excerpts on how things really are.

From holiday etiquette on everything from addressing cards to purchasing gifts for others, to what's fashionable to eat, there's something for everyone in this little book (that is, if you're into being a princess and all). Mia is hilariously objective in her comments about her family's take on things, and Meg Cabot cleverly does this by putting all of Mia's comments in red, so you can't mistake her thoughts.

One of the highlights of the book is Mia's chapter on Christmas around the world. Throughout the chapter, there are dozens of countries, complete with folklore, tradition, and how this particular culture spends their holiday season --- a very useful and informative tool for the student who has to do a book report (hint, hint). It's all there. There might even be some countries listed that no one has ever heard of, or ever thought of, that celebrate their own version of Christmas.

Additionally, there are explanations on which movies are best to watch during Christmas, recipes to make, and the real story of truths and myths of what Christmas really means. Finally, it's a wrap with an in-depth guide to Kwanzaa and, of course, the symbolization of Happy New Year, complete with a listing of how to say it in 60 different languages!

Although we won't be in Genovia with the royal princess, she made sure we knew enough to have lasting memories, as if we were. Happy Holidays everyone!

I have all of Meg Cabot's Princess Diary books, I even have the release dates marked on my calendar, so I was first in line at my bookstore this morning to buy this book.

In this book, Princess Mia, her family and friends share their Christmas memories and customs. There is even a section on Christmas cards, and how to say, "Happy New Year" in a lot of languages.

Great book to learn about Christmas customs and such.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrate the Holidays With Princess Mia and Her Pals.......2005-10-25

To be a good Princess, one must be diplomatic, and educated in everything regarding the countries and principalities surrounding one's own charge. This includes knowing how to celebrate every winter holiday, from the well-known Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, to the often unspoken about Yule, Chinese New Year, and Saturnalia - just to name a few. But this is not all that a good Princess must know. A good Princess must also be up on gift giving - what exactly is the right present to give to a guy you're not dating, but hope to be dating soon? Then there's those fabulous holiday movies - including some very unconventional holiday tales; and all of this is rounded off with a nice hot chocolate with marshmallows. This year, spend the holiday with Princess Mia, and her band of closest friends, from Lilly to Michael, and Tina to Paolo, as they give you the lowdown on all things Christmas, from how teenagers in other countries celebrate the holidays, and how to say "Happy New Year" in every language known-to-man.

I have purchased and read every PRINCESS DIARIES HOW-TO BOOK, but HOLIDAY PRINCESS instantly took the prize as my favorite installment in the series. Perhaps it's my love of Christmas that made it my favorite; or maybe it's the fact that I love reading about how the PRINCESS DIARIES gang is spending their holiday season. Either way, HOLIDAY PRINCESS is a fun-filled book that will keep everyone on their toes for the holiday season. Cabot has created an informative guide that features style tips, shopping solutions, and much, much more that will get everyone through the Christmas rush; and each tip is accompanied by a marvelous illustration by Chesley McLaren. Overall, this is a must have book for all PRINCESS DIARIES fans, as it will quickly win a place in everyone's heart this holiday season.

2 out of 5 stars A tad dissapointing...........2006-08-30

After reading Beyond the Deepwoods, I quickly became hooked on this series. Although I am slightly older than the target consumer (24yrs. old), I enjoyed the main characters and fantasy atmosphere.
I particularly loved the Twig series, maybe because it was the first character i met.
There are 3 main locations in these books. The Edge,(the earth-like plane), the sky, and Sanctaphrax. This place is the most evolved, scholarly, and prestigious of the three (so they think). And this is possibly why i dislike it the most.
Down on the Edge, there are many types of fantasical, deadly creatures and poisonous plants. There is danger hiding within the trees; a very difficult place for a young teen to survive on his own. It is all too easy for a reader to get sucked into the situation, as well.
Winter Knights takes place in Sanctaphrax. The dangers are there, but not as life-threatening and gripping as The Edge.
The creatures are tame, the plants are contained, and the biggest threat is a fellow scholar. Honestly, it is just not as interesting to me.
I only finished reading it because I loved the others so much, I thought I'd give it a chance. It really wasn't worth the time or money. If you loved the others that took place in the sky or The Edge, this will be a real let down.

Along with Freeglader, this is one of the best Edge books. If you enjoy the Edge Chronicles, this one won't disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars It just keeps getting better!.......2005-12-07

Once again, Paul Stewart and the amazing illustrator Chris Riddell don't fail to impress. Adding a new dimension to the Edge and the multitude of characters within it, this 8th book travels back to describe the events that took place after The Curse of the Gloamglozer. We learn much of the presigious Kight's Academy, and Quint's time there. There's also a key appearance from a young Vilnix Pompolnius, and an explanation of how the doomed Screed Toe-Taker (from Stormchaser) came to be stranded in the Mire. You begin to realise that each book links to every other, and explains things in greater detail. A fantastic new installment, and if there's a ninth book, (and I'm sure there will be) I can't wait for it!
Finally, some people seem to be confused about the order of the books. Reading them in order of publication is best, but if you want you can read them like this (bearing in mind that you may be a little out of your depth by reading the 4th book first!)

The Winter Hare is a story about a boy growing up in the Middle Ages. It's a great book for those who love knights, swords, armor, and battles. The book is about a boy growing up and is accepted for an opportunity for knighthood but he must pass tests in order to prove his worthiness. This book is filled with every aspect that a great book should have. This book is great for kids. It has an intriguing plot and includes words that both kids and adults are familiar with. I suggest it for kids who are 9-14 years old.

This is a good historical novel. I learned a lot about Medieval times from it. I would recommend this story to anyone, not just people who like Medieval stories. It is good, exciting, suspenseful, sad, and funny. I liked the time Will received two puppies, one who he called Uther Pendragon, and was promptly piddled upon. As well, the Wallingford family provides a warm and comic air to the more serious part of the story. It is a good read.

1 out of 5 stars I don't like the new translation at all.......2007-10-11

I love the style in which this book was originally translated from French to English. There was a genuine, child-like quality to it that rang true to the books character and that of it's charming little prince. The new translation took me by surprise as I was not aware that it had been re-translated and sadly, the surprise was not a happy one. It just doesn't feel like the same book to me, and tragically, the original translation appears to be out of print now. Why in God's name did they feel the need to fix something that was in no way broken? Ghaaaa! Child-like and genuine has been replaced by rigid and sterile. The Little Prince would weep. :(

      4 out of 5 stars a teacher.......2007-09-23

This is a wonderful story and a great book I was able to share with my students. The only drawback with the book is that the pages are not in color, but the extremely low price allowed me to purchase the books for my students out of my own pocket.

5 out of 5 stars Fit for a Princess .......2007-09-15

I purchased this as a gift for my 7-year-old niece, who lives in a city distant from me. I'm told by her, and her parents, that it is a beautiful edition.

I can add nothing to the comments about this wonderful story, which speaks to the hearts of both children and adults.

So far as I know, it was a hit with my niece and her parents.

      4 out of 5 stars heartbreaking, tender.......2007-08-16

As I begin this review I think that there must be tons of reviews out already since it's just a classic. Does anybody still need a summary and opinion? Well, maybe you do. Maybe you're like me who knew about the book, has met many people who love it and could never bring yourself to read it. Well, for you, I will write this review.

He story is a fable: a stranded pilot meets The Little Prince who shares with him his discoveries about the people and things he has met on his journey away from home. The Little Prince is like a child in many ways as he is open, curious, and accepting. But he is wise, too, knowing about what's truly important in life: friendship, responsibility for your friends, and enjoying things for what they are without trying to make them into something that you want.

When parts of the book were read to me in middle school I immediately despised it. A little prince fussing over a pretentious rose, how stupid was that?! I had to turn 38 to be able to read this book about love and friendship and life because I couldn't allow myself to be vulnerable to its message before now. I'm grown-up enough now to mourn the lack of responsibility I've shown towards the people I've tamed. And even harder for me: I'm grown-up enough now to mourn the lack of responsibility that people who tamed me have shown towards me. And I'm working on accepting the fact that I need to let go and try again to do better every day.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, a waste of my time.......2007-08-09

I would rate this book with zero stars but I was unable to do so. Unfortunately I was forced to purchase this book for a class. It was a major waste of money in my opinion. If I had children I would NEVER submit them to this book. I found no point to the story at all. I wish I could get my money back as well as the time I wasted on reading it.
