With this introductory novel was published in 1997, few would have predicted the unprecedented success this series would produce. And everything that made Harry Potter so successful is all first shown, though hardly fully explained, in this book, HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSPHER'S STONE.
The novel opens with Harry living under the cupboard with his abusive aunt and uncle. He has had a mean, depressed life, and though an active boy, the sheer amount of trauma he must have endured would scar any child. But the door opens out of this lifestyle. I've read an interesting theory (obviously not true), that a much different writer than Rowling would have ended Book 7 with Harry having imagined all this fantasy world, where he was so prominent and famous, to help escape the neglect and abuse from the Dursleys.
He gets a letter (actually, hundreds) saying he is in fact a wizard. So he is enrolled the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Him, along with his new friend the giant Hagrid, go to Diagon Alley, a magical bazaar, and thus he is thrust into the magical universe so captured the imagination of millions. We soon learn Harry is world famous among wizards for conquering an evil Wizard named Vo - um - He Who Must Not Be Named. Sorry `bout that slip. =). Along the way, we learn that Voldemort is after a magical artifiact called the Philosopher's Stone (which was, unfortunately, changed from the UK original title to "Sorcerer's Stone" in all other regions). So much of the novel is driven by the three main characters defending this stone from Voldemort.
In this novel we get the first ever glimpses of Hogwarts, Voldemort, Quidditch, Dumbledore, Severus Snape, muggles, the Forbidden Forest, the Invisibility Cloak, and any other number of thins Rowling's magical confectionary of an imagination has cooked up for us.
One of the best things about this book, and indeed about the whole series, is how Rowling plants details which, when reading, you may not necessarily pick up on, but are later rather important in later volumes. Who would think Griphook and Hagrid's admonition no one breaks into Gringotts would have such prominence in Book 7? Or the importance of Harry being able to talk to the boa constrictor, something which is not referenced again until Book 2 and then not fully explained until Book 7? Or the Invisibility Cloak, a device first introduced in this novel, but you have no idea of its importance, or even that it has real significane, until Book 7.
Another great example of this planting of clues is Neville Longbottom, who, but by fate, could easily have been the main star of the series, though you don't find out that information until much later in Book 5.
The book also introduces the relationship dynamics that would continue throughout the entire series, from the interplay between the three main kids (Harry, Ron, and Hermione), to the ambiguous Severus Snape, the wise mentor figure of Albus Dumbledore, bumbling Hagrid with his love of nasty creatures, prim and reserved Professor McGonagall, evil incarnate Voldemort, Draco Malfoy, etc.
Overall, there are numerous memorable scenes in this novel. As the novels progressed, the children aged and the target audience would have aged as well. In this novel, they are still very young and immature, but already at this early point in their career, there are seeds of greatness for Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
The same can be said of this debut novel as well.

If you want to escape reality for a while and delve into the literary version of a comic book, this is a good read. It is not too intense, quite whimsical, and pleasurable to relax to after life's pressures have done their duty for the day. Time for fun.

Jim Dale gives life to Harry and all of the caricatures in J K Rowllings book. Just as the book is a page turner the audio book is a must listen to. I had to listen to the audio cd's one after another.

Co-workers and even my own kids pestered me to read this book. I tried and tried but I just couldn't get past the first 50 pages. I love the movies but just don't care for her style of writing at all. I am told she gets better with each book but this one was a real snoozer.

I love all of Barbara Parks books about Junie B. Jones. I think they should make a movie of this book. I think this is the funniest of all the Junie B.books. If you have a little girl who loves to read or be read to, I cannot recommend all of the Junie B. books enough.

My daughter has the whole collection she love keeping up with Junie B. I have not read a book in it's entire but from what I've read she is a very curious, funny little girl. I recommend this book and all the others also. My daughter was hooked after the 1st Barbara Parks books and althought she is older now she still cracks up laughing when reading. Totaling entertaining!
A very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age .......2007-06-05
After more than 25 books, Barbara Park's series about a very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age (and the writing ability to go with it) is still going strong. So I suspended my disbelief and read JUNIE B., FIRST GRADER: DUMB BUNNY to my six-year-old.
In this adventure, the rich girl in class, Lucille, invites everyone over to her mansion to participate in an over-the-top Easter Egg Hunt that will result in a play date in Lucille's heated indoor swimming pool. Lucille wants her boyfriend Sheldon to win, but Junie B. and her arch-nemesis May (the original "dumb bunny" in the title until Junie B. gets something of a comeuppance later on) are ready to pounce, pound and scrabble their opponents in order to get a dip in that grand pool.
There is a lot of falling down and Batman-type expletives (WHOOSH! SMASH!), and the kids are none too nice to each other until Junie B., in a sudden acknowledgment of good judgment, makes a quick and well-appreciated sacrifice to save the day. We laughed at some of the pratfalls, and Lucille's annoyed Nanna character was amusing as well. Junie B. shares the stage with a lot of different people, but she is clearly the star of the show, the story told from her point of view.
Whether humiliated in a pink bunny suit or gloating over her lack of selfishness, Junie B. thinks in capital letters with lots of exclamation points and writes in her journal about what she has learned. The journal entries are cute and engaging, and spell out the moral of the story without being too pointed, which we appreciated.
If this is your first Junie B. foray, it might be helpful to go back and read some of the earlier books first to relax into her strange environment. Otherwise, DUMB BUNNY certainly will offer fans of the series more of what they have come to expect from this little girl and her friends.

My daughter love this series. It's a little hard for me to read due to the poor grammar and name calling. Let's face it though most first graders have poor grammar. There are worse things that she could be reading. We have all of these books and they are well loved.

I just discovered her wonderful series a couple of months ago. I read one of them and went back to the library to get everything else of hers they had or could get on inter-library loan. I think I've now read eight and loved every one of them. (I thought that was all of them, but I read here --O joy--that there are eleven in the series. Now to try to remember the titles of the ones I've read and find the other three.)
I say, "Thank goodness for Deborah Crombie" because I'd almost decided the classic English mystery--literate,well-plotted,wonderfully atmospheric,not too graphically gory or depressingly misanthropic or gratuitously salted with the author's politics--is a vanishing genre. (Caroline Graham being a notable exception, but her books are agonizingly far between.)
I can't imagine anyone will be disappointed with any book in this series. Crombie is consistently interesting and inventive. I chose this one to review only because it was the first one on the list.
Her characters are believable and likable and their personal lives never dominate or distract from the story. She is obviously a loving student of British history, architecture and geography, and maybe the most memorable feature of her novels is the care she takes--sometimes with exquisitely drawn inside-cover maps--to acquaint readers with the various locales the stories are set in.
She was a real find for me. I hope she has many more books in her.
A Wonder in the Winterland of Rural England.......2007-08-13
Crombie has taken her two erstwhile London coppers (Kincaid and James) and sent them out to the Cheshire (near the Welsh Border) where Duncan grew up. They have gone out to Duncan's parents farm for a real 'English Country' Christmas. It will also give Gemma and Kit (Duncan's newfound son) a chance to meet the 'family'. We are introduced to Duncan's parents (Hugh and Rosemary) his sister, husband and children (Juliet, Caspar, Lally and Sam) and assorted old friends (such as Chief Inspector Ronnie Babcock).
Of course there has to be a murder(s) or there wouldn't be any reason for the book. But blending into the standard Police Procedural is a fine discussion of the 'narrowboats' and the people who have made a living on them for more than the last hundred years. In the nineteenth century they plied the canal system, delivering goods like long haul truckers; except that they lived on the boats. They were only seven feet wide so that they could pass each other on the canals. Few of the boats are used this way anymore and a way of life is dying off. Crombie writes a great peaen to these people.
Though out of their jurisdiction, Kincaid and James are able to get involved peripherally with the conivence of DCI Babcock. More than seeing the investigation unfold, we see a newfound respect for each others professionalism between Kincaid and James. The strengthening of their bond as they both still deal with the loss of Gemma's baby (in the last book) is both thoughtful and realistic. Crombie also does a marvellous job of pursuing that age old antagonism that builds between and mother and daughter, as the child comes into womanhood. A fine novel.
Murder on the canal.......2007-07-07
Superintendent Duncan Kincaid takes his partnet, Gemma and their respective two children, Kit and Toby, on a Xmas visit to his parent's home in Cheshire where Gemma is entranced by the pretty buildings and the proximity to the canal and to the canal boats. Duncan's sister, Juliet, who lives nearby, is beginning renovations to an old, local barn when she breaks through some mortar to find the mummified body of an infant, lovingly wrapped and sealed in the wall. The local police, headed by an old friend of Duncan's, are called in and the usual proceedings begin, even though it's obviously an old crime and it happens to be a freezingly cold Xmas Eve. Duncan's newly restored son, Kit, is fascinated by his cousin Lally, the strange and tormented daughter of Juliet, suspected of drinking and drug taking and, altogether, a surly, uncooperative teenager with a huge chip on her shoulder. When the body of former social worker, Annie Lebow, who lives on one of the canal boats is found on the tow path with her head bashed in, suspicion falls on another canal boat owner with whom she had been publicly arguing on the previous day. It's a very good murder mystery with very interesting characters, set in a completely different location..that of the canal boats and their inhabitants.
Twisting Paths Forge New Relationships.......2007-06-11
Home for the holidays is never a relaxing vacation when combing members of a collective family. Gemma James dreads visiting Duncan Kincaid's traditional parents. She has no trite answers as to why they have decided not to assume a formal union. All of her personal worries become insignaficant when Duncan's sister Julie discovers the mummified body of an infant child and a retired social worker is murder.
The boat people of the canals of Cheshire, bring their stoicism and suffering to the heart of a story where families unite and disintegrate. The complex relationship of Duncan with his son and his pride in Kit's growing maturity is contrasted by the rebellion of his niece and the agony of his sister. Deborah Crombie uses the landscape to tell an nontraditional Christmas holiday in "Water Like a Stone." Yet, in the end there is a moment of peace, or a slice of life that isn't sugar-coated. A must read for anyone who loves a complex mystery written with razor-sharp style.
Together Gemma and Duncan find their way to a surprising solution to a complex case where they are bystanders in the investigation.

I always enjoy Crombie because, though she's writing about murder, she doesn't depend on graphic violence. I found this to be a satisfactory blend of mood and descriptive settings. The pub scenes put me right there, as did the scenes along the canals. A good read that was over too soon.

I have been reading this book one chapter per week and talking with my five year old son about the suggestions given. We laugh and make it a fun role playing time. The subject matter is wonderfully on the money and the suggestions for talking or explaining to your child are very enlighting and helpful. A good buy and a really helpful book.

Ms. Cohen's book fills a niche- there aren't many clearly written books available that include experiential exercises for parents struggling with this difficult issue. Raise Your Child's Social IQ provides parents with practical tools and provides a means for them to partner with their children. Thank you!

As a Grandparent of eight grandchildren, I have read Cathi Cohen's book with great interest and have recommended it to the parents of our grandchildren. It is a simple building block approach to acquiring social skills and self confidence in children who are struggling to be accepted and do not know why they they are meeting with failure. It is extremely beneficial to the parents who may be challenged in trying to help their youngsters meet with success. I only wish I had it available when I needed it.

I read this wonderful book to myself the day I got it. I was thrileed and couldn't wait for the next book to come out. It takes place in New York City in 1938 during the Great Depression. jack and Annie have to find a unicorn. But how will they find one in a big city? Finally Jack and Annie find the unicorn, whose name is Dianthus. But just then two teenagers named Balor and Grinda burst in and try and take Dianthus. Jack and Annie escape with the unicorn, and stop in Central Park. There, Balor and Grinda show up, and Annie recites her favorite magic rhyme, Turn Into Ducks. Balor and Grinda turn into ducks.
Teddy and Kathleen, Merlin and Morgan, show up and the two other teenagers ride Dianthus home to Camelot. Jack and Annie travel home in the Magic Tree House, and merlin and Morgan take a ride around New York City.
For ANY fans of the magic tree house, MAGIC TREE HOUSE #36: BLIZZARD OF THE BLUE MOON, I reccomend you read this wonderful book. You will be so surprised that you read this book over and over again!
Goody, Goody. Sugar and gooey talks down to kids........2007-05-11
I felt insulted for my seven year olds intelligence. These books not only murder the myth of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur (Merlin and Morgan best buddies and silly wizards) but the writing here is bland and boring. The prose reads aloud like a robot's voice.
The story is full of holes and illogical points. Why, why, why are these two older kids following the little kids but not giving them information. I don't understand why Merlin and the older kids know everything that has to be done, knows where and how to do it, but instead of telling the little kids they send to do it, they give them poems that give them hints to figure out. I wanted to scream at them.
Why doesn't the author use pronouns? Even early readers can read pronouns. The use of proper nouns for names and the constant repeating of information makes the books more fit for preschoolers than early readers.
By advice, buy Junie B. and Lemmony Snickets, better books, better writting.
I love fantasy and have been reading since before I started school nearly 30 years ago. I can't subject my children to this poorly writen garbage. All I can say is, thank whoever for Harry Potter teaching people that childrens litterature doesn't have to suck.
Capturing The Unicorn.......2007-04-13
Blizzard of The Blue Moon by Mary Pope Osborne was a fun, entertaining book that I would recommend to elementary school kids, because it's a lower reading level. It all begins when Jack and Annie go in there tree house that goes to wherever they want. They had to go to New York City to rescue a unicorn. The tree house landed at Central Park, and there was a BIG blizzard. They got on the subway so they could get closer. A lady told them the wrong stop that was really far away from where they needed to go so they took a taxi to try to get closer. The taxi ended up getting snowed in, so they just got out and walked. Jack and Annie had block's and block's to go.
As Jack and Annie are walking there far distance, thinking they needed to go to the zoo, they decided to hit the museum to warm up. This nice museum lady said she was very excited, since she hadn't had any costumers all day. She suggested they stay a while, since there was going to be a huge blizzard. She wanted to inform them on some older facts, that probably nobody knew nothing about. She talked for a long time, about boring things, that practically put them to sleep. Jack finally stooped her with an interruption, and said "we need to get some work done." So she showed them the way to the back of museum, and said "why don't you take a look there, because you'll enjoy it." Jack and Annie had no idea why there were going there, but maybe there could be the unicorn that they need to capture. So they went right along, through a double set of doors, to the outside, and back into a different building. Right when they enter, and to the left there was a HUGE picture of an unicorn that would capture your eyes in a second. From that moment on, they knew that was the right unicorn. Jack got into his backpack a read a poem form the book. All of a sudden, the unicorn came to life. Oh no. Just now two people showed up who were also trying to get the unicorn. Now were going to have to fight for him.
Make sure you read this book and find out what happens. I would recommend it to you any day.

Magic Tree House does it again.......2007-01-10
We read these books together and although they are all different there are some repetitions from previous books. We love this series, but the last 12 books have to be read in order because of clues. We suggest reading them in number order from one all the way to the last number.

Magic Tree House #35: Night of the New Magicians, is another wonderful installment in Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series. In this book, Jack and Annie go to Paris, France for the World's Fair of 1889. There they have to find "four new magicians" and warn them about an evil sorcerer who is planning to steal the secrets of their magic.
I am just a kid, but i highly suggest that any fans of Mary Pope Osborne should read this book AND the entire Magic Tree House series.
A belle époque perspective on the magic of science.......2007-05-18
One of the best Magic Tree House books I've read with the kids. As usual, Osborne brings history to life. In this case, she turns science and technology into mystery and suspense, with the Eiffel Tower as a beautiful gathering place for brilliant minds and tales of inspiration. The World Fair attendees are awed by inventions that seem commonplace and even old-fashioned to us. This book taught my kids to take nothing for granted... and it gave them the desire to climb the Eiffel Tower - a pretty nice ambition for land-locked Mid-westerners!
Another great one from M. Pope Osborne.......2007-05-14
I purchased this book for my son as an Easter present. He read the whole thing that day and said it was just as good as the rest of the series. We struggled with him to try and spark an interest in reading, and these books were the only thing that worked. Even now, when he reads much more advanced books, he still comes back to these adventures.

Reading a book that will be a movie in Feburary is fun for all ages. This book is full of imagination, magic and fantasy.
A Family Favorite.......2007-09-06
My kids can't get enough of these books! I have a 7 year old & a 5 year old, and we have read the books aloud to them. The 7 year old keeps trying to sneak the books away and read them himself, but we make him wait. They are an easy read--each book is about 100 pages, so it doesn't take long to read. The storyline is exciting for the kids. I'm glad we bought the boxed set, as you wouldn't want to buy just one! The five books make me think it's like one book broken into 5 parts.
Protesting the Price.......2007-09-05
These books are nice little fantasy stories, but I read the first one and couldn't bring myself to buy the others simply because you get so little book for your buck. At least the Series of Unfortunate Events, similarly packaged, were completely developed--and I thought they ran a bit short at the time! These Spiderwick books are more like 1/3 of a book each, or maybe even 1/4--and yet they're as much as 10 bucks a pop.
Anyway, the characters are pleasant and the central premise of a field guide to goblins and other fantastic creatures is a rich one. But I would want to see far more incredible story telling, and at a reasonable length, to invest in this series wholeheartedly.
Spiderwick Chronicles-- Not just for kids.......2007-08-25
I enjoyed many things about this book-- the artwork is enchanting and the storyline is inventive and as an adult reading this book - I was taken back to being a kid and loving every moment of being lost in the story and my own imagination. Great Read!

My husband and I are into Fantasy and sci-fi books. We knew of Holly Black, and we love her other books. My husband loved the set and so did I. The pictures help give you a mental image of the people in the book, so as you read your mind has something to go off of. We plan on keeping this boxed set for when we have kids, I'm sure that they will love then just as much as we did.

This is an awsome book the first one is tiger that one is realy good to. once you read the first book youl be modevated to read the whole seriese. It's about monks at temple and fighting the auther jeff stone writes and creates beutifly, he detailes the fighting so well it's like your there waching it. READ THE WHOLE SERIESE IT'S GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 10 year old has read each book in this series with relish and has now gone back to re-read them all. It has sparked his interest in reading after a lull, and he sped through them in no time. Now we just need to wait for thhe next one...

An awesome book with the Crane (Hok). It has double the action of Snake, and there are many unexpected turns in the story. I can't wait for Dragon.

One of the best series ever written..........2007-08-10
I can't even begin to describe this series and I won't try to. I'm afraid I'd only do it a disservice! Susan Cooper says SO much in so few eloquent words that her books are rather like listening to fine music. I rank this easily with the Narnia series as well as Lord of the Rings. And while I adore the Harry Potter books and think JK is a fabulous writer, I truly feel that even they cannot live up to the quiet serious intensity of these books.
Every year I read this series again. I love it more and more with each read.
Recently many illiterate folks have called these books 'boring' and 'flat'. Those same modern day readers often have to be babied through text & dazzled with fancy action scenes. It has also become a fad to bash things that have won awards or recommendations.
This is a story told with very deep and quiet emotions and if you give it a chance then I can promise you, you won't be disappointed. :)
new movie.......2007-05-18
I remember reading this series years ago and since then I have always thought that it would make a great movie and guess what someone else thought so as well. IMDB is reporting that this movie is in production and will be released in October 2007. I am very excited about this and I am really wishing and hoping that they translate it well to the big screen. I have since lost my books but I have just purchased this set to read all the books again and relive my youth again.
Light Is Rising.......2007-05-12
The series as a whole is great. if you have never read them before but enjoy other great fantasy such as Harry Potter, the Forgotten Realms, or even the Lord Of The Rings these are a must read. they have been great books for the last 35 years or so and will continue to be great books 50 years from now.
Wonderful, wonderful series.......2007-05-06
This series is my son's absolute FAVORITE. He's 8 and I recently decided to introduce him to the books, and he ate them up. He said he likes how the bad people aren't always perfect, and he likes the way the Drew siblings work together in OVER SEA, UNDER STONE and again in GREENWICH and SILVER ON THE TREE. I'm pretty sure that he didn't understand all the symbolism in THE DARK IS RISING, though he liked it and made up his own belt of rings as a result.
This series is really wonderful, and I agree with other reviewers - it should be better known. It's mythical elements mix well with the action scenes. Plus, it's very well written and edited - creating really unique and interesting characters.
I'm sort of judicious with my 5 star ratings, but this one definitely deserved it. Pick them up - you won't be disappointed.
