The British epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or "mad cow" disease, is only one in a series of mysterious and often fatal afflictions that have baffled scientists for more than 40 years. Deadly Feasts is a compelling account of decades of research into a family of diseases ranging from kuru in primitive human tribes to scrapie in sheep. Richard Rhodes traces the attempts of scientists to understand these strange diseases, which are now known to be transmitted by ingesting the brain or nervous tissue of infected creatures, even though the pathogen itself is an enigma that seems to be neither bacterial nor viral. Deadly Feasts is packed with historical, anthropological, and epidemiological detail, and is graphic and occasionally even alarming in its speculations.

Book Description

In this brilliant and gripping medical detective story. Richard Rhodes follows virus hunters on three continents as they track the emergence of a deadly new brain disease that first kills cannibals in New Guinea, then cattle and young people in Britain and France -- and that has already been traced to food animals in the United States. In a new Afterword for the paperback, Rhodes reports the latest U.S. and worldwide developments of a burgeoning global threat.

In a non-fiction narrative that reads like a medical thriller, Richard Rhodes follows virus hunters on three continents as they track the emergence of a deadly new brain disease that first kills cannibals in New Guinea, then cattle and young people in Britain and France -- and that has already been traced to food animals in the United States. A new Afterword assesses what needs to be done to prevent a fatal epidemic. "An Upton Sinclair-ish look inside the modern meat industry....Rhodes tells this medical detective story beautifully". -- John Schwartz, The Washington Post

4 out of 5 stars Engaging look at a scary set of diseases.......2004-08-20

Deadly feasts: tracking the secrets of a terrifying new plague by Richard Rhodes is one scary book. It tracks the discovery of prions, the mishapen proteins responsible for mad cow disease, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt Jacob disease. Following human cannibals in the jungles of New Guinea in the fifties, bovine cannibals of the British Isles in the eighties, and the bizarre history of sheep scrapie from the 17th century on, Rhodes does a great job of presenting the history and discovery of this bizarre group of diseases. I especially enjoyed the characterizations of the scientists, from the Noble Laureate who so enjoyed the New Guinea that he often regretted rejoining civiliziation, yet brought thirty natives back to the USA and helped them through school, to the hyper-competitive scientist who named the molecules even though he wasn't quite certain what they were.

But this isn't just a story of scientific discovery. As the foreboding subtitle blares, Rhodes explores some of the scarier aspects of prions. These include spontaneous formation, responsible for the known early cases of Creutzfeldt Jacob disease, trans-species infection, including mad cow disease and scrapie, the long long incubation period and lack of immune system response, and hardiness of the disease. One scary factoid: a scientist took a sample of scrapie, froze it, baked it for an hour at 360 degrees (celsius), and was able to re-infect other animals from this sample.

For all the uneasiness this book inspires, it certainly doesn't offer any answers. A condemnation of industrial agriculture, a warning that it's unknown whether vegetarians are even safe, and a caution against using bone meal for your flower garden do not make a recipe for handling this issue. To be fair, it was printed in 1997--perhaps things are under control now.

5 out of 5 stars First, Last and Foremost.......2004-02-04

When Richard Rhodes published Deadly Feasts in 1997 it all seemed doubtful and futuristic. His investigations followed the development of this horror from the first, to 1997, and predicted the future (now). Rhodes insisted that if practices weren't changed the US would be plagued by infected cattle. Practices weren't changed, and recently cattle from the US were banned from most of the countries to whom we export. And practices still haven't changed.

If you want to read more about the future I'd suggest you read this book. Despite the passage of years there's not a better source of information about Mad Cow Disease, the protection of the US food supply, regulators bought and paid for by the regulated industry, and what the future holds for all of us.

4 out of 5 stars Do Vegans Worry About Mad Eggplant Disease?.......2004-01-17

When I was an undergrad--way back in the late '70's--we were told that no concrete evidence of cultures that practiced cannibalism existed. This was back when "primitive" societies were depicted as being pure and uncorrupted by modern woes, like MTV and carjackings.

But, in fact, cannibalism has been a thriving tradition among some peoples, and has only recently been wiped out. (Maybe.) And among those who ate nervous system tissue (which would NOT be my first choice, had I been born a cannibal), kuru sometimes reared its ugly head.

Kuru is yet another variation of the encephalopathy that turns the consumer's brain into sponge, which is eventually fatal. Rhodes, always a riveting storyteller, spins the tale of research into kuru, and its parallel prion-based diseases like Mad Cow and scrapie. He also examines the cut-throat academic dispute that led some early researchers (Prusiner) to the Nobel Prize and led others, equally deserving, into oblivion.

Now, Mad Cow is in the news again. It seems we in the U.S. weren't safe, after all! Our meat processing industry has, for years, chosen to ignore warnings that selling "downer" cattle for human consumption is just WRONG. Also, we have been tweaking the diets of many food animals--not just cattle--with brain tissue-based protein, so who knows where it will turn up. We may be reading about Mad Chicken disease in a few years.

It seems that the public is either in complete denial that this is a problem, or else convinced that this is the plague of the 21st Century. I don't think we'll know for another generation, when the effects will have started to appear.

Not only that, but Chronic Wasting Disease, which affects deer and elk, has already infected at least two (that we know of) hunters who ate venison. As much as the media tries to play up the issue, and as much as the "authorities" try to play it down, we do have a problem that won't go away for awhile.

I think that, for those of us who are confirmed carnivores, we really should patronize ranchers who can offer "organic" products. That may also have the effect of increasing the number of smaller agribusinesses.

And we should be informed about this. Rhodes offers a primer on the subject that is as fascinating as it is chilling.

5 out of 5 stars Cuts Through the Baloney.......2004-01-08

The spins and factual errors I was hearing on news reports about "mad cow" in the U.S. sent me back to Rhodes's excellent work for another look. Deadly Feasts is basic to a layman's understanding of the problem.

If more people read this book, we could build a better support base in this country for reforming operations of our food industry, especially how we feed and test animals to be processed for our dinner tables.

If we cheat ourselves of this knowledge, however, we'll be making the same mistake we made in the 1940s and 50s. We ignored scientific evidence of the harmful effects of radiation from atomic fission, and we sent people out to test sites just to see what might happen to them.

I don't care what the information or precautions or necessary reforms do to "the economy." I don't want my children's and grandchildren's brains wasting away 20 years from now because of the slow but relentless effect of "mad cow."

4 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary but somewhat unprofessional.......2004-01-06

Deadly feasts is an extroardinary, readable, tale anyone interested in public health, medicine, and biology will enjoy reading. The tale is especially relevant now because of the spread of mad cow disease to the United States. I urge people to read this book because it will assist them in understanding the current risks facing the U.S. food supply. I also recommend the book because it is fascinating. Prion diseases are 100% lethal and transmitted in a way that defies conventional wisdom and may not be completely understood to this day.

Mr. Rhodes admirably reports that controversy remains regarding the method of transmission of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. However, I think he goes over the deep end by personally attacking/criticizing the activities of Dr. Pruisner--one of the nobel prize recipients who helped elucidate the "carrier" of prion diseases. If Dr. Prusiner intentionally tried to supress publication of alternative theories, then he has certainly violated good scientific practice. But, as Richard Feynman points out, "nature cannot be fooled," and the truth will eventually emerge regardless of what Dr. Prusiner thinks or does. Mr. Rhodes goes to the point of criticizing Dr. Prusiner for passionately advocating his own theory--maybe at the expense of delaying our arrival at the ultimate truth. We don't know what the ultimate truth is though (Dr. Prusiner may be correct) and science is a market place of ideas that eventually leads to that truth. I think Dr. Prusiner has the right to advocate his own theories, providing he reports his data accurately and fully.

A much more reprehensible matter in the book is entirely glossed over. While Dr. Prusiner's behavior is punished for pages and pages, hardly a sentence is written about the alleged sexual misconduct of another prominent nobel prize winning recipient who helped elucidate the nature of prion diseases. When placed side by side, the alleged immoral behavior of Dr. Prusiner pales in comparison to that of this other character. Mr Rhodes' fixation on criticizing Dr. Prusiner, but his comparative disregard for this other character suggests an unprofessional bias engrained in this book.

Book Description

Chosen by William Safire in the New York Times to be the publishing sleeper-seller of the year for 2007.

In this rapid-paced book, a former CIA chief of Soviet bloc counterintelligence breaks open the mysterious case of KGB officer Yuri Nosenko’s 1964 defection to the United States. Still a highly controversial chapter in the history of Cold War espionage, the Nosenko affair has inspired debate for more than forty years: was Nosenko a bona fide defector with the real information about Lee Harvey Oswald’s stay in Soviet Russia, or was he a KGB loyalist, engaged in a complex game of deception?

As supervisor of CIA operations against the KGB at the time, Tennent H. Bagley directly handled Nosenko’s case. This insider knowledge, combined with information gleaned from dozens of interviews with former KGB adversaries, places Bagley in a uniquely authoritative position. He guides the reader step by step through the complicated operations surrounding the Nosenko affair and shatters the comfortable version of events the CIA has presented to the public. Bagley unveils not only the KGB’s history of merciless and bloody betrayals but also the existence of undiscovered traitors in the American camp. Shining new light on the CIA-KGB spy wars, he invites deeper thinking about the history of espionage and its implications for the intelligence community today.

3 out of 5 stars A Slight misnomer.......2007-09-03

The author did spend some reasonable text of the "Spy Wars" however the majority of the text dealt with the very controversial "Nosenko Defector Affair" and the equally controversial CIA Counter Intel chief Jim Angleton. It was clear that Angleton was one of several CIA officers "addicted" to drink. Alcohol addiction is a by product of the attache circuit and several CIA and DoD officers have fallen to it. However the DoD response is treatment or dismissal while the more collegiate atmosphere at CIA is to ignore it and hope it goes away.

I believe the author should have spent more effort on the "Spy Wars" and less on the intramural issues at CIA. Or alternatively title the book "The Nosenko Affair".

5 out of 5 stars Maximum Counterintelligence.......2007-08-19

I am a former counterintelligence officer and subject to the vestiges of the professional parinoia that is one of the occupational hazards of the field. That said, the Nosenko case, so well discribed by Mr. Bagley, still stinks. The CIA is a government bureaucracy that is even more inclined to labor under the burden of "group-think" than the Department of Motor Vehicles or some other large governmental or corporate organization. That is why the managment of the CIA wants everybody on board with the party line: Nosenko is the McCoy, the real deal.
Nosenko was a plant. The incriminating information that he revealed came before he was sequestered in Virginia. Mr. Bagley claims that the CIA Soviet Bloc (SB) branch had a legal go-ahead from high officials in the administration, the Atty. Gen. for example,to keep Nosenko under wraps. The rehabilitation of Nosenko had more to do with covering up ineptitude than any evidence that would clear up questions about Nosenko's validity. In Legacy of Ashes the author points out that many spies, traitors and moles were revealed by Nosenko. Mr. Bagely refutes this. Who were they, the exposed? Surely now someone can come forward with these names. Nosenko is an adventurer who got to play on the big stage. His efforts to convice the CIA that the communist (Oswald) that shot JFK was not working for, with or had any connection with the chief organ of the Soviet communist party whatsoever.
The House Committee on Assasinations was convinced that Nosenko was lying. This is not to say that there was any connection to the murder but it is safe to say that the Soviets truly wanted the US to believe that there was none.
During his extensive interviews, Nosenko was asked simple questions: what elevator did you take to your floor, how were secretaries assigned, what is your KGB rank, what did they serve in the lunch room and other seemingly mundane quesions? He could not provide answers. I can still remember the layout of each office that I occupied and that was over 30 years ago. Nosenko was poorly briefed. The KGB hoped that we would focus on the things that they wanted us to know not the trivia that would make or break Nosenko's bona fides. Nobody is perfect.
It is the simple things that trip you up when you lie.
One thing that Mr. Bagely missed when he talked about other, non-Soviet, operations was that during the deception operation being run against the Germans in WW 2 leading up to the Normandy landings, the Brits dropped agents into occupied France that they knew would be captured and tortured. They had been given scraps of information that conformed to what the German high command wanted to believe: the invasion would be north of the Seine near Calais. That, gentle reader, is cold. So, it is no great reach to suspect the Soviets from doing the same kind of thing.
One way to deal with this would be to have aspiring CIA officers listen to a debate on the Nosenko issue, having both sides make presentations and then let the little darlings think for themselves. That is what we pay them to do, after all: THINK.

4 out of 5 stars Too short!!!.......2007-08-05

We need more books by Mr. Bagley. Spy Wars is a well-written, intelligent look at the case of a Soviet defector in the mid-60s. The case itself is fascinating and raises more questions than it answers.

While they were secondary topics in the book, I was more impressed by Mr. Bagley's analysis of KGB/NKVD and Cheka operations. In particular, the details of how the Second Chief Directorate functioned, and some of their methods and procedures, was intriguing. The wartime deception operations of the NKVD were massive.

Finally, Mr. Bagley's sharp eye and constant searching for motives behind an action or event made him the perfect counter-intelligence agent. One poignant example of that sharp eye was his handling of fake defectors. In some cases, fake defectors were used to turn the CIA's attention away from actual spies/moles/methods. Mr. Bagley would analyze the motives behind the fake defectors and even deduce the actual spies/moles/methods being hidden.

In all, the book was way too short and left me longing for more analysis and spy stories. More please!

4 out of 5 stars Not for the General Reader.......2007-07-27

Tim Weiner's book, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA is the better book for the general reader as well as any intelligence professional.

This book loses one star for failing to be open about the special prison built for Nesenko at "The Farm," and the extraordinarily abusive treatment he received at the hands of the Soviet Division in the CIA's Directorate of Operations (DO). Old timers are still shaking their heads in dismay.

Recognizing that this book is a profound and detailed telling of the story from the side of those who destroyed Nosenko, I give it a four over all for detail from a particular perspective, a 3 for the general reader.

There is nothing in this book that would lead anyone to believe that the DO was anything less than quite good, and while I was tempted to drop it to a 3 for that reason, I left it at 4 for what I call special purpose reading. Deeper details than most desire, and details that cannot be evaluated alone, but must be considered in the light of many other accounts and context--don't bother if you only want to read one book.

In passing, the author confirms CIA's persistent inability to field officers with language skills, even against the "main enemy," the Russians. The author also touches on the groupthink mentality of the cult of intelligence.

MR. BAGLEY HAS WRITTEN A SUPERB A-LA- CARRE BOOK ON ONE OF THE GREATEST MYSTERIES OF THE COLD WAR:WAS NOSENKO A REAL DEFECTOR OR JUST A KGB
PROVOCATION? WAS HE SENT TO PROTECT OTHER AGENTS OF THE SOVIET BLOCK?
BAGLEY IS FURIOUS ABOUT NOSENKO'S EXONERATION AND ACCEPTANCE INTO THE US INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY ,AFTER ALMOST FIVE YEARS OF HARD AND UNRELENTING INTERROGATIONS .EVERYTHING WAS DONE IN ORDER TO MAKE NOSENKO CONFESS ABOUT SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER BEEN PROVEN AND THIS WHOLE AFFAIR HAS BEEN KAFKAESQUE FROM ITS INCEPTION.
ONE REALLY WONDERS WHAT THE REAL REASON WAS FOR THE TRANSFER OF MR. BAGLEY TO ANOTHER JOB IN BRUSSELS IN 1967 :WAS IT HIS FAILURE TO CONVINCE HIS SUPERIORS ABOUT THE ALLEGEDLY-CONSPIRACY THEORY ABOUT NOSENKO?
THE CASE IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED BUT THE COTROVERSY WILL GO ON AS LONG AS RELEVANT MATERIALS WIL NOT BE CLASSIFIED.EVEN THOSE "FAMILY JEWELS" RELEASED BY THE CIA IN JUNE 2007 ARE NOT ENOUGH TO SHED SOME MORE LIGHT ON THIS WHOLE AFFAIR.ONE THING IS CERTAIN: MR. BAGLEY WILL KEEP YOU BREATHLESS DURING THE WHOLE READING OF HIS FASCINATING BOOK AND IT IS UP TO YOU TO DECIDE WHO WAS RIGHT AND WHO WAS WRONG ,WHO THE BAD GUYS WERE AND WHO THE GOOD ONES WERE IN THIS BAFFLING MYSTERY.

1 out of 5 stars Never let the truth stand in the way of a good lie.......2006-08-13

In this lively book, Tom McKenney co-authors the story of Jim Shaw, a man who left Freemasonry after learning that it was contrary to his Christian beliefs. Mr Shaw relates the story of his association with Freemasonry and his rise to become "one of its top leaders." Mr Shaw explains that he gradually became dissatisfied with Freemasonry as he grew in Christian knowledge, and he cites specific examples of what he considered to be non-Christian teachings in Masonry. But can Mr Shaw's testimony be relied on as completely true? Although his work went unchallenged for several years, Masonic researchers have uncovered what appears to be the secret Jim Shaw concealed, i.e., he exaggerated his Masonic standing and falsely claimed to have received honors which he never did. The reader of "The Deadly Deception" owes it to him/her self to see the wealth of information now available on Jim Shaw. In our book, _Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry?_ S. Brent Morris and I demonstate that although Tom McKenney's acount is lively, engaging and easy to read, the evidence posted online suggests that Mr Shaw yielded to religious enthusiasm and that Mr McKenney was his unwitting victim. This book is one of the easier-to-read anti-Masonic books, but it fails to convince this reader that the author's feet were planted firmly in the ground.

4 out of 5 stars Credentials of author unimportant (in my opinion).......2006-03-27

In my opinion, it matters not if Jim Shaw had the credentials he touted. What matters is the content. Is it true? Can it be verified? I believe it is and it can be. The excerpts taken from pages of Mason literature as compared to what the Bible teaches make it clear that Free Masonry and authentic Christianity are incompatible. I'm saddened when I see the "Christian fish" and the Masonic emblem on the back of the same vehicle. I DO NOT HATE those who embrace Free Masonry, they too were created in the image of God and we as Christians should love them pray that the veil of deception be lifted so they may see the truth. The book does an excellent job at comparing what Masonic doctrine says versus what the Bible teaches. The content is easily verifiable by accessing Free Masonry literature. More could be said, but this is supposed to be a book review, not a lesson in Christian apologetics.

1 out of 5 stars Deception?.......2005-12-28

The Deadly Deception: Freemasonry Exposed by One of Its Top Leaders is a very easy book to read and understand. It's unfortunate that Rev. Jim Shaw attempt to slander free Mason's was done through his own deception. As the book cover suggest that Rev. Jim Shaw claims of being a Thirty-Third Degree Mason along with one of the TOP Masonic Leaders is undocumented and is seen only through the eyes of Jim Shaw himself.

All information of Masonic Degree work to include the election of officers is and has been documented for public information/review. The names of every newly created Thirty-Third Degree Mason are published in the "Transactions of the Supreme Council" and thousands of copies are distributed after the degree has been obtained.

One may argue that documents can be changed which in fact could have easily happen as any Anti-Mason might claim, but it's impossible to recall the thousands of copies already distributed. In addition, there is also no Masonic records that I could find stating that Rev. Jim Shaw ever was a Worshipful Master in a Blue Lodge. However I was able to verify that Rev. Shaw was a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in December 1965 and upon his demit from being a Mason Jim Shaw is documented as holding the thirty-second degree.

I would recommend to anyone who reads this book with an open mind to do so with caution and to do thier own research as I have done. I would also recommend to the readers of this book to read, "Is It True What They Say About Freemasonry? The methods of Anti-Masons" by Art DeHoyos.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting expose.......2005-07-22

It seems that there is considerable truth in this book, i havnt read the whole book yet but so far its proven what i have already instinctively known, that the upper orders of freemasonry are occult black worship, the reviews also offer insight into this, those pro-masonic really need to take a look at themselves and look at the words used in their ceremonies more closely to see the truth. Its all about Black robes and deity worshiping. They worship the master of this world, their god is not the most high god but the usual demi-gods, egotistical beings who consider themselves as gods who seek to rule by absolute obedience and control. interesting how one reviewer commented that he belonged to no religion and that freemasonry is about a "society for the protection of its members from an oppressive government". But then why is worshiping the master so important in freemasonry then, and why all the pomp and ceremony and dark occultist stuff. Also interesting that those pro-masonic reviewers are up to 32nd degree but not beyond that. Guess they might understand if they were 33rd!

Book Description

The end of a scourge

"The prayer that has been mine for twenty years, that I might be permitted in some way or some time to do something to alleviate human suffering, has been answered!"
—Major Walter Reed, writing to his wife, New Year's Eve, 1900

As he wrote to his wife of his stunning success in the mission to identify the cause of yellow fever and find a way to eradicate the disease, Walter Reed had answered the prayers of millions. For more than 250 years, the yellow jack had ravaged the Americas, bringing death to millions and striking panic in entire populations. The very mention of its presence in a city or town produced instant chaos as thousands fled in terror, leaving the frail, the weak, and the ill to fend for themselves.

Yellow Jack tracks the history of this deadly scourge from its earliest appearance in the Caribbean 350 years ago, telling the compelling story of a few extraordinarily brave souls who struggled to understand and eradicate yellow fever. Risking everything for the cause of science and humanity, Reed and his teammates on the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Board invaded the heart of enemy territory in Cuba to pursue the disease—and made one of the twentieth century's greatest medical discoveries. 4 out of 5 stars most interesting.......2006-04-03

Seemed to be a well researched and well written book, and a fascinating topic. On the cusp of a sea change in medicine worldwide, these Doctors on the frontier like Walter Reed, Carlos Finlay (of Cuba), and William Gorgas helped to nearly eradicate a once deadly illness through creative reasoning and disciplined scientific method. While not a complete page-turner, and not quite able to transport the reader to the time and place-I still found it to be a well organized, informative, and ultimately interesting book. It's not long and easily worth the time. I got interested in this subject after reading a David McCullough book about the Panama Canal, a project that most likely would not have been attempted by the U.S. had not the centuries old myster of the cause of Yellow Fever been at last solved.

5 out of 5 stars Yellow Fever - The Journey of its Cause.......2006-02-05

Highly recommended. From the start just like a good mystery, this book grips and holds your attention as it unfolds the discovery of what causes yellow fever. The rolls of the individuals in academia and medicine are insightful. Vivid descriptions portray the full affect of both the human and economic devastation caused by this disease. Had is not been for the few couragous individuals who chose to pursue their beliefs and instincts against the mainstream beliefs of the day, there is no telling when the cause may have been discovered. Their stories are amazing as well. The book is factual and well documented. The challenges faced by the individuals, cities, and countries during the time of the book are not unlike those faced today in searching for the cause and cure of illnesses such as West Nile or the flu.

4 out of 5 stars The eradication of yellow fever was one of the great achievements of the 20th century.......2005-08-31

Yellow fever first appeared in the Carribean over 350 years ago.
This was a devasting illness that claimed the lives of roughly 20% of it's victims. The disease went virtually unchecked for well over 200 years and wreaked havoc in Cuba, Hispaniola and throughout South America. The cause was unknown. It would kill millions. As international trade grew in the latter part of the 18th century, epidemics of yellow fever would spread north to many cities in the United States as well. Outbreaks would occur as far north as Boston and New York. In 1793, a historic outbreak in the city of Philadelphia would claim more than 5000 lives, roughly 10% of the city's population. By the mid to late nineteenth century it was becoming abundantly clear that uncovering the cause of and ultimately finding a cure for this scourge was becoming a top priority for the U.S. government. In "Yellow Jack" authors John R. Pierce and Jim Writer tell the remarkable story of those committed doctors and scientists who would put so much on the line in a heroic attempt to unravel this complex and often frustrating medical mystery.
Carlos Juan Finlay, a researcher working in Cuba in the 1880's and 1890's, is generally credited as the first to identify a particular species of mosquito as being responsible for the transmission of yellow fever. His theory was quite controversial and it would be a quarter century before his suspicions would be confirmed. The conventional wisdom at that time was that the disease was highly contagious and could be transmitted by what was then known as "fomites". Pierce and Writer explain that fomites are "all contaminated objects or materials from yellow fever patients (clothing, bedding, furniture and so on)". Most medical experts also attributed the spread of the disease to unsanitary conditions. Many would point to the filthy conditions that existed in the island nation of Cuba as the likely source of the disease.
As unlikely as it might seem, the sinking of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor in 1898 would act as a kind of catalyst in solving the riddle of yellow fever. President William Mckinley issued a call for 125,000 volunteers and war was declared on Spain. Among those who would serve with distinction in Cuba was future President Theodore Roosevelt. Seeking to avoid a devastating loss of life among U.S. troops being sent to the Carribean, U.S. Surgeon General George Miller Sternberg would appoint what would become known as the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Board, a four man panel led by Major Walter Reed. The group was essentially charged with investigating infectious diseases on the island of Cuba. There was an awful lot at stake and the urgency of their mission cannot be underestimated. Enlisting in the battle against yellow fever was not for the faint of heart.
The second half of "Yellow Jack" is more or less devoted to the work of the U.S Army Yellow Fever Board. Pierce and Writer have done an outstanding job in recounting the events that would ultimately lead to the eradication of this most dreaded disease. I think you will find that "Yellow Jack" is a very well written book that will hold your attention from cover to cover. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Scary History of Yellow Fever in N. America.......2005-06-21

Up until about 100 years ago every summer in the South was met with dread as the Yellow Jack would invade cities and the epidemics would last until the first frost.

This book provides a history of those dark days and the triumphs and tragedies of the group of Scientists and Doctors such as Walter Reed who studied and fought the disease that killed more americans than Spanish bullets during the Spanish American War.

Yellow Fever spread to the New World from Africa carried over by mosquito larvae in the water casks of European Slave ships ferrying Africans to the Dread Sugar plantations of the Carribean. Trading ships from the Carribean would frequently land in american ports carrying the mosquitoes and people infected with yellow fever frequently causing epidemics along the atlantic coasts plagueing such modern urban areas as Philadelphia and Baltimore.

This history of yellow fever shows why there is so much concern today with imported diseases such as West Nile and Avian Flu.

The book is also a good history in the advance of science and medicine since the 18th century as peominent American physicians of the 1780's still bled their patients to balance their humours and blamed the epidemic on stinky garbage vapours while in the 1890's the doctors were seeking out an insectivoid vector for the disease.

1 out of 5 stars Fish Oil or Snake Oil? Author is a Complete Fake!.......2006-08-04

The author of this book took an article about Scandinavians and longevity from the medical literature, (research from REAL physicians) and decided he could use it to make lots of money by selling his bottled "Omega-3 Miracle". The medical literature does NOT in any way support any claims about the bottled stuff he is selling. Omega 3 fatty acids IN FISH have been proven to increase longevity. There are NO medical studies on Mr. Gorden's product. The author is NOT an MD, though he uses the title in his name. He is not a cardiologist. He is not a practicing radiologist and, despite the bio, he can not be located anywhere as a practicing Osteopathic doctor either. He is a complete hoax! So eat healthy foods, live a healthy life style and save your money - don't fork over your hard-earned cash to a guy who lies about his background. Love the photo on the cover of him with a stethoscope around his neck - almost makes you think the guy has a medical background.

4 out of 5 stars I Don't Know: This Book Could be Only 90% True.......2006-07-05

I am not purchasing ISLANDIC fish oil. The prices are too high. I suspect that this Dr. Gordon wishes to make additional profits by convincing readers to purchase only from this source - from his own web site. I believe this because other respectible authors make similar claims for fish oil using non-Islandic sources.
Except for this detail, I have placed a large portion of my hopes for lower disease risk, with greater longivity, on the basic principles presented in Dr. Gordon'a books.

1 out of 5 stars Don't trust this guy.......2006-05-26

This book is not very good the same information can be found in five minutes on the internet. Any Dr. who uses an honorary degree after his name is suspect. Dr. Garry Gordon does not hold a valid MD degree, he is a DO and should only use that degree after his name. Although a DO deegree is an equivalent medical degree, the fact that he uses a fake MD degree shows his insecurity about his credentials. Further, his is a strong proponent of chelation therapy which is a fraudulent medical practice. He is a radiologist not a heart specialist as the commercial states.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on omega-3 I've found.......2005-09-13

As a medical doctor and researcher I have to say that this is clearly the finest work to date (in form that's understandable to the lay person) regarding the many health benefits of fish oil. You can tell that Dr. Gordon is certainly one of the most knowledgeable individuals studying omega-3 today and it's relationship to heart disease prevention and relief of arthritis pain, among the many other benefits. The information is presented in an organized fashion and it's an enjoyable read as well. I strongly recommend that anyone interested in extending their life read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The book's got attitude.......2007-01-22

In addition to what was written above, I'd like to add that this book would almost be funny if it weren't so depressing. When I say funny I mean this only for those who might find James Ellroy or Chandler's bleak wit funny. A bitter sarcasm tinges the language that fleshes out this strange corner of WW3. Unlike many history/expose books, Deadly Secrets is written with attitude, with a sharp perspective that is illuminating (Hinckle and Turner have clearly spent some time with many of the players).

The oblique cold warriors (mafia, arms dealers, mercenaries, displaced patriots, displaced murderers, gamblers, right wingnuts, oil barons, cia officers, bad bankers, international corporations, drug traffickers and all those other types of people we don't like to think of as soldiers on the front lines of the cold war) aren't so oblique after reading this...Its a wonder we won the cold war because with friends like these who needs Soviets. Your taxpayer dollars have gone to interesting 'causes,' (schemes) and its not hard to imagine that these secret wars are no different today.

If you are interested in the Cold War and how it bleeds into to "War on Terror" you should check this out. Also helpful for those interested in the continuity of the careers of those who pass through, in, and around 'Dallas,' Watergate, and the Iran/Contra affair.

If you're hungry for more afterwards, other authors to look for are Jonathan Kwitny, Peter Dale Scott, Jonathan Marshall,Alan Block, Pete Brewton, whose bibliographies give up a bunch of great sources.

5 out of 5 stars Shows The Hypocracy on the War on Terrorism.......2005-05-26

Although the original message was the CIA-Mafia complicity in President Kennedy's death, there is a more important message for 2005. Namely, Bush, far from being against terrorism, loves terrorists if they're anti-Castro Cubans. Our current president's father is the real villain, but our current Bush has done nothing to put the Miami Mafia terrorists in their place and bring them to justice. (...)

3 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking.......2004-06-27

Really interesting stuff here. Digs deep behind the scenes of the whole affair & leaves one wondering what really happened. Very detailed & well-researched.

Book Description

What is Happening to the Children?

Two teenage high school dropouts, David Anderson and Alex Bara were inseparable friends -- and outcasts in their hometown of Bellevue, Washington, an upscale suburb of Seattle. They spent the majority of their time playing fantasy games and hanging out at the local Denny's with their Goth buddies. Alex's and David's young lives were going nowhere fast -- and soon they would be convicted of a terrible crime. On January 3, 1997, they lured twenty-year-old former schoolmate Kim Wilson into a local park, where she was beaten and strangled to death. Immediately after the killing, at the victim's nearby home, her mother, father, and younger sister were brutally slaughtered.

A newspaper journalist who covered the crime, the investigation, the trial and its aftermath, Putsata Reang masterfully tells a disturbing and powerful true story of senseless multiple homicide. She illuminates some of the darkest corners where a shockingly increasing number of America's youth hides its rage, pain, and madness until it explodes in Bellevue, at Columbine . . . or anywhere across the nation.

1 out of 5 stars What is the Deadly Secret? The Book is a Bore.......2004-11-23

I picked up this book at my local library - thank goodness I didn't actually waste any money on it! I live in Bellevue and picked up the book to see about the crimes that occured prior to my moving here. I was very disappointed in the writing style. It was not very detailed on dates and places and the writer seemed to repeat the same passages over and over. I kept waiting for it to end. Don't waste your time or money. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars natural born killers?.......2004-05-28

A chilling look at two high school buddies who, finding themselves increasingly marginalized and ignored by society around them, explode in a violent massacre. Their slaughter of an entire family is made all the more chilling by the fact that they had talked about it for a year or two beforehand, yet no one took them seriously. Journalist Reang has done a good job of filling in the background details of these two adolescent killers. Unfortunately, she drops the ball at the end when she ascribes the source of their pathology as a fixation with the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons; she seems to dismiss the fact that one of them was a nerd who suffered years of abuse at the hands of fellow schoolmates and the other had had to deal with a nasty divorce between his parents and living for years with an abusive father. In fact, only one of them had an obsession with D&D, and he was not the dominant one of the two; it could even be said that D&D was a refuge from his pathetic life-- at least, for a time, anyway. Still, worth a read to see how two very intelligent teens can go terribly wrong without proper guidance.

5 out of 5 stars ACCURATE AND INSIGHTFUL.......2002-04-25

As a conisuer of true crime novels I have to say that this is one of the best I have ever read. It was accurate in it's facts, and I know this because I personally researched the case after reading the book. I also wrote to one of the teens that were convicted of this crime, as this book made me want to understand more about him. It is rare for me to be unable to put a book down, but I finished this one in little less than a day because I couldn't put it down. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in true crime, and to anyone interested in why teens are comiting crimes like these.

5 out of 5 stars Page turner,gripping, intense.......2001-11-08

The fact that is most heart breaking is that this is all true. David is just intensly homicial and drags his poor friend Alex into his plot so he would have a scapegoat in which is his best friend. Alex stood for David as if he couldn't ever live with himself if he ratted out David. David on the other hand seemed to not have any regret or show any sorrow that his long time friend was being slaugthered in court all in his name. Alex seems to have such a heart to have been the a harden killer that acted alone. After all David lured his first victim and seemed to enjoy playing the game of killer hind and go seek. Alex on the other hand couldn't beleive this was really happening. I loved this book and gave it 5 stars. Rest in peace Wilson Family.

5 out of 5 stars Deadly Secreats.......2001-07-04

This is a good book and showes just how far this lost kids will take Dungens and Dragons games and fantisy games to which they don't even know the difference from reality any more. These two boys put this plan together just to know what it feels like to kill. Where their warrning signs??? Yes, but no one took them seriously. Even Kim herself hear the rumors that he was gonna kill her, but just laughted it off. Wake up people!!! Some time threats made jokingly are really warnings. Even if you don't think that a certain person is capiable, you will be suprisied just what they are capable of when they snap or are pushed over the edge. I feel that EVERYONE is capable if their buttons are pushed enough.

5 out of 5 stars Ridley Pearson books are a must read.......2006-02-24

I have read all of the books he has written and highly recommend them to any mystery reader. This one is no exception. A real page turner.

1 out of 5 stars Quite unreal.......2002-02-26

We gonna have patience while reading thick fiction!Never Look Back was extensively researched and the background(the place where the protagonists have moved to) was believable, too - Hostile, hungry and indigent folks staring at the main character while she plowed her way through the slum. What wasn't quite believable were the protagonists - I do not mean, people do not act like those fictitious people, predictable and one-dimensional characters only do average readers injustice.Perhaps "simpler"(I do not mean to belittle!)readers will share the protagonists' thoughts and ideas, but I guess average readers are always waited to be impressed ,or touched deep inside, let alone the critics' wants.

1 out of 5 stars SHOULD NOT HAVE READ "NEVER LOOK BACK".......2002-01-30

This was a really waste of time for me. I have read all of the Lou Boldt series so I thought anything by Ridley Person would be good, boy, was I wrong. There were many, many boring pages, to much description of what I think was going on. So much was really unbelieveable. Clayton or what ever his code name is at the present time, is a superman, cannot be killed no matter what. Just an all around bad book for me. I did read it all thinking it had to get better, but it did not. Read something you know you like or some of the Lou Boldt books and leave this one alone.

1 out of 5 stars more boring than stalled traffic.......2001-08-12

Wow. I've enjoyed other Pearson books when I'm looking for a quick read, but this book was painful to finish. It seems at times to be parody of the international spy novel -- the character, dialoge and story lines are so cliche I found myself laughing out loud at times. I resorted to keeping this in my car to read only when stalled in traffic -- even then, sometimes the traffic was more interesting. Avoid this one.

1 out of 5 stars couldn't finish.......2001-05-22

normally love Pearson ... his books are taut -- good characters -- _realistic_ characters ... but not this time ... everyone in the US gov't is a brilliant patrician ... suave ... handsome .. cool ... and, oh yes, independently wealthy too! come on! not one likable character ... even the villain was one-dimensional ... tossed it after reading just a third of it -- even that was too much! ... not worth the effort -- quite annoying ...

Book Description

It was the brainchild of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover: the Top Echelon Informant Program. Under its protective umbrella, dangerous felons were courted and coddled and given free reign to commit the worst crimes imaginable in exchange for damning insider information about the bosses of organized crime. Dangerous conmen and sociopaths, like South Boston's James "Whitey" Bulger, became Bureau-supported criminals kingpins, indulging in robbery, extortion, even murder under the eyes of the FBI. Only now, forty years after the program was first conceived, is the true story of blood and madness being told and an account made of the bodies left in its wake.

A prize-winning Boston journalist, Ralph Ranalli now exposes a shocking history of corruption, terror, and violence born of an unholy collusion between America's top law enforcement agency and some of the worst criminal psychopaths ever to victimize an unwary nation.

4 out of 5 stars Second in a Trilogy.......2007-02-24

This book was the second book written about the Bulger/F.B.I scandal in Boston. For those who don't know , James "Whitey" Bulger ran Bostons Irish Mafia for almost 20 years. Bostons F.B.I helped him during that time because he was one of their Top Echelon Informants. Black Mass was the first book written about the scandal, but since it was the first book some events hadn't unfolded yet ( Bulgers handler Agent John Connolly hadn't been arrested yet, mass graves hadn't been discovered yet,etc.). Also , this book looks at a very important detail, the why aspect of this scandal. Ranalli points out that it was the Top Echelon Informant program that set Whitey up for success. The program was set up by the FBI to bring down the Mafia. Basically, criminals were given a free pass if they could produce results ( i.e, convictions). Ranalli exposes several TEIs ( Greg Scarpa of the Columbo Family, former Teamster president Jackie Presser, etc.) and how the FBIs Win at any Cost attitude guided them to protect their star informants. There were a couple of problems. Because it was written in 2000 some things have changed ( Bulgers partner in crime Steven Flemi has pleaded guilty to murder, Bulger is no longer #2 on the top 10 most wanted list behind Osama Bin Laden though he is still on the list). Also, only 1 page or so was given to the 75 State Street scandal involving Whiteys brother, former Mass. state senate president Billy. To connect the missing pieces I'd recommend Black Mass along with Howie Carrs The Brothers Bulger. Aside from these things, this is an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars A sequel to follow??.......2006-08-05

One might ask after reading this excellent book whether 2 kids, say brothers, were groomed to follow in the Bulger's footsteps but perhaps something went awry??

I know of 2 brothers from Massachusetts. Both were raised in state care during Bulger's reign. The older brother went into the army and a couple years later the younger was being harassed by activities a man who bore the same name in the same town, as if the younger brother had another identity created and which was made to look bad to hurt him in the identity confusion following. It is speculated the older brother set up the younger brother, both from Woburn,Mass and that the older brother after a name change went into FBI service at his younger brother's constant expense.Wherever the younger brother went the older followed and bad thingsalways happened to the younger as a result. There is a lot that went on but it looks as a duplicate of the Bulger's good guy/bad guy pairing for controlling different levels of influence was going on.

5 out of 5 stars Systemic issues.......2005-04-27

In order to understand players all around, we might need to understand how informants are made to begin with and whether there is coercion involved in the decision to become one. How do we know that once an individual is selected for government work that handlers at home and the workplace are not assigned and effectively steer that person into the ultimate role they are being demanded for? If Flemmi or Bulger had tried to to refuse, how do we know individuals with direct or tacit appproval of state and/or federal agencies may not have inserted into their lives while roving surveillance warrants, mail covers, and other interception forms been employed? If Bulger had gotten a legitimate job might not agents have worked to assure he lost his job or infiltrated the job to harass as a behavior modification strategy?

The government has at its disposal unlimited expertise to destroy and individual, completed with professionals highly skilled in psychological warfare. Could any of us resist the decisions Flemmi and Bulger made, especially if harm to family or friends come result from non-cooperation?

How can we know if the government does not have unlimited, unchecked capability to intrude into personal lives even for the purpose of personal destruction?

5 out of 5 stars What do you make of this?.......2005-02-03

I definitely recommend this without question!

There is a man who was a child when the originating turmoil spawned Steve Flemmi in 1965 and Whitey 10 years later. Not long before Whitey took off a newspaper did a story of his search for roots. Fifteen years prior to Whitey fleeing, a man "Pseudonym", befriended the young man in a technical school and a friendship began. Three years before Whitey fled another man,"John Doe" was introduced to the man through a mutual friend. After Whitey fled, Pseudonym and John Doe began acting hostile for no apparent reason, as if very angry at the man. About a year before Whitey took off, the man had also written a movie script and book manuscript detailing the life of a handicapped, abused and neglected orphan which had fallen into the hands of a third individual, "John Doe Jr.".One day while over Pseudonym's home and seeing a mysterious woman on the phone there identified as "Chrissy Green", the man began explaining possible fraud with respect to forwarding the script. Pseudonym suddenly chimed "Well, I'm not going to jail......" and never offered an explanation for this bizarre statement. As far as the man knew, neither Pseudonym,John Doe, or John Doe,Jr. knew each other even though they lived within reasonable commuting distance and in the Boston area.

Some time later, "Chrissy" appeared using a new name.

In the 1970s, Whitey signed on to the Top Echelon program. In the late 1970s a boy who was being overseen by former government officials,"Patsy" was assigned a female social worker by the name of Debbie Richards, a name mentioned in this book. Patsy was bounced around in state child care while William Bulger was in the Senate. In 1982 Patsy was befriended by "Tim",a man claiming to be a former "mental health counselor" undergoing a career change while at technical school. Just prior to meeting "Tim", another man appeared in Woburn,Mass ,where Patsy lived, going by the same name at a different address. "Patsy II" began creating problems for Patsy I, notably going AWOL in the army and much more while sending authorities after Patsy I.In 1992 Patsy was introduced by mutual friend to "John Doe" and a new friendship was formed. In 1995 Whitey fled after a local newspaper article in the Boston area did a story on Patsy' search for his unknown father and family roots.About the same time, "Tim" and "John Doe" began acting strange...
"Tim" began acting inexplicably hostile while "John Doe" began acting hostile and accusatory. Later,John Doe claimed to be taking notes and possibly tape recording staged conversations, in which Patsy was steered into making statements which could be taken out of context as if building a case for later use. Tim began doing the same.Tim hailed from the area where an FBI office existed in Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts. This whole situation appeared as if a boy tied to one of the principals in the Bulger case was systematically assigned monitors to keep tabs on him during the period Bulger and Flemmi operated and when Bulger fled and the situation unravelled, the boy,now a man, became a target of revulsion and blackballing. The boy might have had ties to Bulger's victims, adversaries, government agents, etc.
Even the Dept. of Justice, which Patsy corresponded with concerning the harassment, claimed no knowledge of the correspondence, citing its classified records section.
