I just read one of her previous books, A Talent for Destruction. I wasn't really crazy about that one, but I love discovering new authors, or new to me, so I read this one too. I should have stopped when I was ahead.

The "plot" involves the disappearance of a reclusive elderly couple following a bad storm. The local police almost immediately suspect the son and a former neighbor. Just when the investigation is getting rolling, a detective steals a script of the neighbors autobiography. (Which would be against any police procedure) The next 150 pages are that book! What's up with that? If you wanted to write that book, write that book. I was expecting a detective story. It was very frustrating and disappointing. I am going to avoid this author in the future.

Book Description

Lacey Kincaid is a classic New York success story. As the owner of Odd Jobs, she's gone from rags to riches…sort of. Because Lacey's harboring a secret -- she was born Lillian Dumont, and spent her childhood with a silver spoon in her mouth, until the deaths of her wealthy parents and the evil schemes of an abusive uncle forced her to take drastic measures. She'd never planned to return to her former life or her abandoned identity -- but when her childhood sweetheart, Ty, resurfaces and urges her to claim her rightful inheritance, she decides that maybe being the Dumont heiress wouldn't be so bad. Lacey's uncle doesn't see it that way, though -- and he's willing to do anything to stop her.

Now, it's up to Ty to protect Lacey before that silver spoon becomes a silver bullet. But if they live through this, the future's looking bright for this downtown guy and his brand-new uptown girl!

This book is an easy read. Brain candy. The premise is cute, the prologue engaging. The title is catchy. You could take it to the beach or haul it around in your purse to read in bits and pieces during your commute.

Sadly, though, I didn't enjoy it as much as her other novels. I wasn't attached to the characters and it seemed like this book somehow bypassed editing. There just was no driving need to turn the page and see what was going to happen next. It wasn't bad, but I'll think twice when deciding whether to buy her next book or borrow it from the library.

5 out of 5 stars Second Chances.......2007-08-14

Ten years ago three friends, Ty, Hunter and Lilly, hatched a plan to get Lilly away from her abusive uncle. Lilly changed her name to Lacey and at the age of 17 moved to New York on her own. When Ty and Hunter hear that her uncle is going through the motion to get Lilly declared legally dead so he can claim her trust fund, they decide it is time to bring Lilly out of hiding.

On the day that Lilly said goodbye to her life and friends, she and Ty had the beginnings of young love. In all these years neither has forgotten the other so when Ty shows up on her doorstep, Lilly/Lacey knows exactly who he is. He convinces Lilly to come back and facer her past and uncle and claim what is rightfully hers. However, when Lilly arrives back in her hometown, it seems not everyone is happy to have Lilly back.

I am a Carly Phillips fan as she almost always delivers an entertaining, light and quick read. Her stories and characters are always fun, fabulous, and her books are hard to put down. Cross My Heart is my favorite CP book, and for me her best to date, it has a lot more depth than what we usually get. From the first chapter I knew this book was going to be different from any of her other books, just by the emotions the characters make you feel so soon. It's not your typical predictable romance as it has some interesting twists and turns. The mystery portion of the story was strong and kept me guessing and second guessing while reading it.

The secondary characters help add to the enjoyment and complexity of the story. This was a reread for me as I am getting ready for the release of the next book in the series, Molly and Hunter's story, Sealed with a Kiss. This book was great the first time I read it and I enjoyed it just as much this time around. I am looking forward to the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Cross My Heart.......2007-07-24

With the help of her two best friends Daniel Hunter and Tyler Benson, Lillian Dumont faked her death to escape her abusive Uncle. She disappeared, becoming Lacey Kincaid and neither Ty nor Hunter has seen her since.

Ten years later Hunter discovers that Lilly's uncle is going to have her declared legally dead and claim her family fortune, so he and Ty decide to try and convince her to claim what is rightfully hers.

Ty and Lilly had something special when they were teenagers. With them being too young and not enough time to figure it out, nothing became of it, but now as adults, the attraction is stronger than ever. Hunter is dealing with an unrequited love of his own as well. Unfortunately Molly is tangled up in the danger surrounding Lilly. These four friends have to work together to find out what is going on and who is involved before the threat to Lilly turns deadly.

Cross My Heart is a charming love story. The special bond between Ty and Lilly stirred my romantic heart. Cross My Heart has a common theme where some danger and the uncertainty of their relationship mix and yet I was still easily entertained. There is also a clear setup for Hunter and Molly's story, which I am very eager for! I really enjoy this author's fun, witty, and sensual writing style. In Cross My Heart, Carly Phillips creates a sexy, passionate and endearing story where a hometown hunk and a woman with a troubled past get back the love they thought was lost forever.

4 out of 5 stars Good Story...Should've Waited for Paperback.......2007-06-13

I really enjoy Carly Philllips novels and expect a light, fun, fast read when I have a book of hers in front of me. I was really excited to read her newest one, so I pre-ordered the hard cover and awaited it's arrival. Well...it was a light, fun, fast read...but it wasn't really worthy of $17 and I would have liked it more had I only paid $7. The story line is good, but it's not too deep or hard to figure out what will happen in the end. Great book (in paperback) and a quick fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Totally predictable but entertaining nonetheless.......2007-04-04

I thoroughly enjoyed the ride that Carly Phillips takes us on. Carly has a great way of engaging us into the the lives of Lilly Dumont (aka Lacey), Ty, & Hunter. It's as if I'm there watching them go through this soap opera of a plot that Carly does such a fantastic job telling us. I'm new to the Carly Phillips works but will definitely pick up the next book SEALED WITH A KISS due for release in 10/2007

4 out of 5 stars A great read for a day to be spent by the fire.......2005-12-27

My friend gave me this book for Christmas and after my family had opened all of their presents, I sat down and began to read this book of 4 stories; 3 hours later, when I finished the book, I was glad I had gotten the book. I totally recommend this story by Carol Cox.

It is actually 4 stories together in one book. It is based on two families: The Bradleys and The Canfields.
1st Story: This is called Journey Toward Home; the main character is Judith Alder-she travels out west and meets up with the Bradleys and says at their ranch where she tries to discover what she should do next in her life.

2nd Story: This is called The Measure of a Man; this story follows Lizzie Bradley (she was also in the first story as a little girl) as a grown woman growing up and experiencing love and trying to find true love. (This story was my favorite.)

3rd Story: This story features the Canfields and is called Season of Hope; Rachel is the oldest Canfield sister and when Ike Canfield, her father, the weight of running their farm turns to her and it is up to her to try and keep the farm running and pay off soem debts her father left unpaid and take care of her younger sister Rachel. Along the way, she accepts help from one of her father's friends, and, well...just read it to find out what happens.

4th Story: This story is called Cross my Heart; this story is the final story and ends up drawing the two families together. Willie Bradley was unwilling been volunteered to take three orphaned children to their guadian after their parents have died. He, because of the children, ends up meeting Violet Canfield and they expereince many different trials together.

All of these stories are placed in the New Mexico/Arizona area; I found the characters relateable and nothing of the story seemed too far fetched-well perhaps some of what the three orphaned children did in the last story-to tell the truth, I didn't like those kids at all. But this was a very enjoyable read.

Oprah Book Club® Selection, October 1999: Breena Clarke's first novel takes place in Georgetown in 1925, where a large and close-knit African American community took shape beneath the shadow of segregation. At the center of the story is baby Clara, who is swallowed by the Potomac as her sister, Johnnie Mae, cools off in the brackish water. It's the only place the girls can find relief--they're banned from the new, clean swimming pool the white kids use.

After Clara drowns, the river is never the same, and Johnnie Mae hovers on the edge of womanhood wondering if she'll be able to get past her guilt and emptiness. In an eloquent passage, Clarke writes, "Losing a loved one, a family member, is like losing a tooth. After a while, those teeth remaining shift and lean and spread out to split the distance between themselves and the other teeth still left, trying to close up spaces."

Bits of wisdom like this are the book's charm. Most remarkable are the church scenes, which Clarke renders almost purely in the give-and-take of voices: the booming preacher's sermon ("The people we love, we only borrowing them"), and the congregation's "Praise Jesus, Amen" exclamations. The author based her novel on stories passed down in Georgetown--tales of that area's first black churches, founded when people decided they wanted their own place of worship, and implicitly their own God. In church the novel takes flight. Elsewhere River, Cross My Heart suffers from clumsy, purple prose, and a plot that moves forward in labored fits and starts. Clarke painstakingly tries to re-create this past world, but sometimes it seems her duty to history is holding her back, bogging her down in period-piece details. In the effortless church scenes, history loses its gravity and is absorbed by grace. --Emily White

3 out of 5 stars Slow but Sweet.......2007-08-13

I agree that this was a slow read, but if you keep reading you will enjoy it. It was ok, not the best book I've ever read, but far from the worse.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in a very long time.......2007-07-31

Review by Raina N. Thomas

"Little Clara Bynum has fallen into the river." Within the hour the
African American community of Georgetown had heard the tragic news and
ran down to the murky banks of the Potomac River. The men searched
while the women gave refuge to the fallen five-year-olds mother and
big sister Jonnie Mae.

Jonnie Mae was an excellent swimmer. She immediately took to the
water in the creeks of North Carolina with her Grandfather. She had a
moxie for water ever since. But, she could not get Clara out of the
river.

Set in the mid summer of 1925, Jonnie Mae Bynum and her family
struggle with the death of baby Clara. The family, Willie and Alice
Bynum and Aunt Ina, learn to cope with the loss and show the community
that no matter what life does go on. All the while Jonnie Mae, a
young girl, learns about many coming of age lessons. One of those
lessons she learned about was segregation. Had she and all the black
children been able to swim in the white's only pool, they would not
have had to go to the Three Sisters to swim that day and little Clara
(or Rat) would still be alive.

Breena Clarke brings to life old stories she heard as a child in
"River Cross My Heart". After the death of her own fourteen year old
son in 1989 she wanted her first novel to explain the grief she felt
without drawing full attention to herself. Chosen as one of the
selections in Oprah's Book Club in 2004, this story still has a review
on the popular website. Which I believe it is safe to say it must be
a favorite of Ms. Winfrey's.

When I opened the first page and began reading, I knew this book was
to become a favorite of mine. I was captivated by the rich African
American history that she created in fictional form. The plot
surrounding a family loosing a child placed me in their shoes being a
mother myself (Jonnie Mae and little Clara are the same ages as my own
two daughters). Jonnie Mae, the main character, reminded me of my own
adversities I had at the age of twelve. How, no matter what
circumstances one has to face, it's okay to follow your dreams and
achieve the moxie that's burning deep within your soul. I would
recommend this book to anyone of any age with a passion for a great
reading experience.

4 out of 5 stars And A Child Shall Lead.......2006-03-23

"River, Cross My Heart" by Breena Clarke is a heart warming and sweet read. But it is also a tale of courage and strength in the face of adversity. It's a story that says, believe in yourself, even if you feel that no one else does.

Johnnie Mae,is a pre-teen on the brink of womanhood in the 1920's. The neighborhood of Georgetown, just outside of Washington, D.C. seems to be a place where blacks could go and be accepted by their white neighbors. In realty, although outwardly, the white population sees themselves as progressive and 'tolerant', they will not even allow the black population to swim in the neighborhood swimming pool.It is as though they really tolerate the black people so they will have good workers!

To Johnnie Mae, it is incomprehensible, and what's more she can't help but to be drawn to the beautiful pool, even picturing herself being the best swimmer they ever saw there. She's a born swimmer ,and loves the water. She and her friends, are forced to do their cooling off and swimming in the murky river nearby. It is there, during a fun-filled day of diving and splashing around, that her little sister Clara, while under the charge of Johnnie Mae, is lost to the flow of the river.

It is the next year in the life of Johnnie Mae,her family, and the neighborhood characters we follow, from grief to recovery. The trials they must face, and the guilt Johnnie feels deep down. In her we see the strength that a young Rosa Parks may have possessed, as she defies the rules, her parents, and discrimination, and fulfills her dreams of swimming in the 'white pool'. In the trouble that follows, we get a glimpse of where her inner strength has come from. And, personally I thought it ended just right.

It's a wonderfully charming story, with exceptionally interesting and colorful characters. A good look at what life must have been like, for people who were not too far descended from slavery, and a taste of the beliefs and superstitions of the era. A good one time read, a feel good story, and one I would highly recommend especially to teenage girls, who may be inspired by Johnnie Mae's tenacity.

Enjoy the read....Laurie

4 out of 5 stars On the whole, an engaging novel........2006-03-14

A quick read about racism and growing up. The book moves at a good pace throughout and then abruptly ends. I wanted more of a finish than what I got.

5 out of 5 stars Moving On.......2005-08-19

A colorful combination of reality and fiction, `River Cross My Heart' has the ring of truth. The characters are familiar and easy to feel for, the situations recognizable from our own lives, and historic Georgetown is brought brilliantly to life in these pages.

Getting on with the daily routine of living is never easy after the passing of a loved one. After the tragic death of a family member, young Johnnie Mae must cope with her feelings of loss and guilt, all the while dealing with the ever burdensome trials involved in simply growing up. And she must do all this in 1920s Georgetown, where life is changing for the whole community as blacks and whites learn to seek out a new balance with each other.

Part historic novel, part contemporary fiction, even part action-adventure (I'll never forget Johnnie Mae sneaking into the whites-only pool) this novel is a grand old piece of Americana. Read it. Savor it. Love it. Read it again!

To realize the importance of women in Christ's life was a real eye opener.
His mother Mary was to be understood from a mother's point of view, could
we have had her faith if it was our son nailed to the cross ?

The joy they all shared when he arose. This indepth study was a true way to strengthen one's faith. This study could be done anytime of the year
and you would benefit from it.
I felt this was a study that rated 5 stars.
It showed the author has great faith and writes from the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Wait to Begin!.......2007-01-15

Although Christ's resurrection demonstrates the power behind the Christian faith, Easter is often overshadowed by Christmas. Now Ann Marie Stewart helps us explore the deep significance of Easter with her eight-week Bible study, Preparing My Heart for Easter.

The study begins the week of Ash Wednesday (February 21 in 2007) and concludes the week after Easter. But I couldn't wait to start and have completed the first week's lesson.

Taken primarily from the four Gospels, Psalms, and Isaiah, the study focuses on Jesus' last week on earth and the women who followed him during his life and death. You'll get acquainted with Mary Magdalene, Mary Mother of Jesus, Mary and Martha (sisters of Lazarus), the woman at the well, and other women who were eyewitnesses of Jesus' miraculous ministry.

Besides five daily lessons, the study includes two weekend devotionals centered on Easter hymns. You'll also learn the significance of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Pentecost, and other holy days before and after Easter.

This study is great for for personal or group use, but be prepared to study. This well-researched, powerful volume comes to life with Stewart's background in drama and script writing. Her acting roles in the community passion play helped her experience the emotions surrounding the first Easter and motivated her to look at Jesus in new ways. Now she challenges and inspires us to do as many New Testament women did--meet, accept, and follow Jesus. Spring is the perfect season to grow spiritually by studyingPreparing My Heart for Easter.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-11

This is a wonderful, inspirational book. I did this with my bible study group and we all loved it. Ann Stewart is a great author. Her other book "Preparing my Heart for Advent" is also fantastic. I would highly recommend anything she writes.

What a Great Way to be Prepared for Easter
Anne Stewart motivated me to get to know the entire picture of the Easter events. I enjoyed the Bible study she provided and especially relished the details she included concerning the background of the events and people. The book systematically, daily, led me through all the little known and well known aspects of the Easter story.

Also recommended: Her book Preparing My Heart for Advent was so motivational for me personally last year and for a group I led this year.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Still Nearer to Christ.......2007-01-10

Ann Marie Stewart's greatest strength is in illustrating the truth we learn in Scripture through real-life experiences. As we look at Christ's journey to the cross, this love story comes alive across the centuries as its messages resound in personal anecdotes. What happened then matters to what happens now. But also impressive is how comprehensive Stewart's studies are; she has done her research. This is solid spiritual food. I learned so much in both Preparing My Heart for Advent and Preparing My Heart for Easter. Definitely works to be re-read each year. If you wish to draw still nearer to Christ our Lord and know the great love He has for us, if you seek to understand the sacrifice, if you long to know the beauty of the cross and the power of the resurrection, this is the book for you!

      Book Description

Descended from West African kings and healers, raised in the turbulence of Guinea in the 1960s, Kadiatou Diallo was married off at the age of thirteen and bore her first child when she was sixteen. Twenty-three years later, that child–a gentle, innocent young man named Amadou Diallo–was gunned down without cause on the streets of New York City. Now Kadi Diallo tells the astonishing, inspiring story of her life, her loss, and the defiant strength she has always found within.

      3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2004-07-13

An interesting story of a mother, her history, her life, her struggles and success. Being a daughter, a wife, a mother, a provider. I enjoyed the book. I find though that the book was more about her and less about Amadou. SO if your intent is to read about Amadou there is not too much. I recommend it though. GOd Bless her and her family. She is an inspiration to the African (muslim) woman and others too. I feel her pain as I am also a mother.

      5 out of 5 stars 41 Shots.......2004-04-20

A lot of folks like the Bruce Springsteen song "41 shots" but have no idea what it is about. It is about Amadou Diallo, a young man from Guinea who was shot that many times (long after he was "down") by NYPD when he went for his wallet to provide identification to them. They say they thought he was going for a weapon.
This book is heartbreaking and heartwarming, written by his mother with sentiments only a mother could feel and only Ms. Diallo could express. She was recently interviewed on Pacifica radio and I was impressed with her articulate and thoughtful responses to the questions asked her after the settlement she had recieved from the City of NY.
Amadou was not a gangbanger or punk. He was a hardworking, thoughtful and intelligent man with a tightly knit family who loved him and wanted him to succeed in the "Land of Oz" like so many others, like my own forefathers who came from Europe. I wonder if this "murder by cop" would have occurred if he were caucasian.

I'm hoping that those 41 shots will again be heard around the world in the voice of his mother. Shame (again) on the NYPD.

      4 out of 5 stars A Motherýs Story.......2003-09-18

MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is Kadiatou Diallo's story. In her memoir, she rejects the label of herself as the bereaved mother of her slain son, Amadou Diallo and defines herself as a woman of courage who triumphs over adversity. She shares her life and history in vibrant, lyrical detail. As I read her
words, I felt like she spoke them to me and I was lulled into a comfortable trance by what felt like her soothing Guinean dialect.

Ms. Diallo shares her humble beginnings as a child in Guinea, Africa and gives a picture of her family and the political climate of that region at the time. By telling her story, she tells Amadou's story. Despite the rich cultural text and vivid detail of her youth and growth into womanhood, I read with
baited breath because I knew eventually the story would arrive at February 3, 1999. The day that her courage and strength would be thoroughly tested.

MY HEART WILL CROSS THIS OCEAN is a mother's story, it is poignant and filled with cultural details. It movingly chronicles the life of Kadiatou Diallo, a woman who should not be pitied, but heralded for her courage and honesty in this portrayal.

      4 out of 5 stars A Modern Griot's Story.......2003-08-17

When Ms. Diallo's parents and family where pleased to receive the visit of the griot in their house, and his (the griot's) recounting of Fulah history lifted the hearts of the everyone in the compound and beyond. Little did she realize that, she would be doing same through print. A very interesting tale of personal conflicts of modern African women of being true to tradition, religion and still in step with the modern world. At the same time that you want to give something up you do not want to do that.

5 out of 5 stars The tender truth that everyone should know.......2003-07-24

Anyone who knows the story of Amadou Diallo's fate at the hands of the NYC Police, does not know the story until you read this book. In the days and weeks following Amadou's death, the media frenzy revealed very little about Amadou's life and family short of the presumptive image of an African immigrant struggling to earn a living with little education and few family ties. Nothing could be further from the truth. This beautifully written account of Kadiatou's own story and her relationship to her son Amadou, reveals more of his character than any news report ever did. To understand Amadou, you must understand Kadiatou. Her story, and his, humbles the reader. The words are prose, the images are stunning; it is a visual read. Even if you know very little of the tragedy that occurred in 1999, this is a must read.
