Great book fr school, promotions, and basic investigation knowledge at work in law enforcement.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting & Sobering.......2007-07-09

One night on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, the director of a new documentary about a small town in Tennessee remembering the Holocause would both show the film and answer questions. As a native Tennessean I both anticipated and dreaded this, assured that again we would be protrayed as NPR so often does - racist, poor, ignorant, fundamentalist or a combination of the above.

Surprise, Surprise. I was blown away, absolutely stunned at the story and the depiction of a rural Southern town as it slowly encounters the outside world. What wonderful teachers are still around! The suggestion that these all-white, all-Protestant, rural students should undertake an endeavor to break out of their shell seemed to come out of the blue and appeared the most incongruous project possible. Yet, it succeeded and admirably so, The documentary traces the parth, from baby to giant steps as the idea evolves into something none of the participants foresaw. It is and always will be a reminder of Dark Days. I only wish the Soviet and Chinese social experiments that murdered over tens of millions were remembered and memorialized in this way!

As the children and the town learn about Jewish life in Europe and the story of the Holocaust, we learn about them, their lives and their lifestyle that seems strangely satisfying in its simplicity and slowlness. Others become involved - survivors, politicians, two Germans who manage to obtain an actual railroad car used for transporting Jews to concentration camps. Businesses pitch in, individuals donate and a living memorial is designed and stands today almost as a shrine. The paperclips (representing a victim) came from all over the world, from rich and famous, young and old, rich and poor.

Alas, some never learn. At the end, the director was bombarded with questions and suggestions that townsfolk were "really" against the project or secretly racist or did not understand. He said he wanted to make something very clear: He had been in the town over two years and never heard a racist remark nor a single ill word against the project. The people were as nice and down to Earth as they appeared on screen. I felt deep vindication and overwhelming relief. The director, being from the North, was shocked at the casual hospitality of total strangers offering advice and friendship. In this age of increasing anti-Semitism in Europe once again, it is important to ponder the consequences that such speech for whatever reason may bring.

5 out of 5 stars history - holocaust.......2007-03-16

An amazing and uplifting narrative that restores one's faith in humanity and ignites hope for the future. It should be told in every school in the nation and the teachers and children that participated in this project deserve medals. A MUST read.
I give it 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars The Paper Clip Project .......2007-02-11

This is a well written account of the paper clip project at Whitwell Middle School that will touch the heart of people throughout the world. It shows the changes that people went through as the project evolved. Once this book is read, one cannot help but feel a part of a movement that is still attracting more and more people. This is a wonderful book that goes well with the movie, Paper Clips.

5 out of 5 stars This book as taught us a lot!.......2007-07-13

I bought a bunch of books for my 4 year old son when I learned he was teasing the other kids at his preschool. This was one of them. He loves this book, and I notice that he has gotten so much better playing with other children since we started reading this book.

It has been so effective that I simply say "Jimmy, is that how you be a good friend?" when I feel he is being unkind, and he will answer me, using "good friend" examples from the book, and immediately change his behavior. He also tells other children how they can be "good Friends" too.

Unfortunatley, as he nears the age of being a "tattle tale", he is very quick to point out when other children aren't being "good friends" and tells them "You need to read Mommy's book." LOL

I highly recommend to any parent.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Kids.......2007-02-22

I enjoyed the book. It will help my students become better friends with personal ideas and reasons.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-01-10

Reinforces the criteria and requirements that kids need to know to be a "GOOD" friend in easy to understand examples.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2007-01-04

I bought this book to find out how to help my 10 year old with some basic friendship issues. This book was VERY basic and geared for a younger child, but I feel that it is a great book for any parent. My daughter read it also and said that she thought it was very helpful, but a little too "kiddy" for her taste.

5 out of 5 stars Kid's Review.......2006-10-19

I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.

    Book Description

Descriptive and analytical, the text is designed to offer undergraduate students a balanced and up-to-date overview of who the police are and what they do, problems related to policing, and the many reforms and innovations that have been attempted in police work. Divided into four parts, The Police in America begins with a compelling analysis of the foundation of law enforcement, including the underlying purpose of police in society, the history of American police, as well as the contemporary law enforcement industry. It goes on to cover everything from the critical role of the beat cop and the fundamental problems in policing to the career path of police officers and a level-by-level overview of police organizations. Using timely articles and excerpts, the author takes readers beyond the headlines and statistics, to present a comprehensive and contemporary overview of what it means to be a police officer.

    Book Description

Unlike other child and adolescent development textbooks, Child and Adolescent Development for Educators by Judith Meece is written specifically for teacher education majors and for professionals in the field of education. It focuses entirely on the development of school-age children and youth, and provides deep coverage of those topics of most immediate concern to teachers such as cognitive development, social and emotional development, language development, literacy, individual differences in development, and children with special needs. Few texts provide this depth of coverage. The author is an expert in teacher education, having taught child and adolescent development to education majors for over fourteen years. Child and Adolescent Development for Educators also helps students to see how developmental research can be applied in educational settings. Each chapter discusses the implication of research for teaching, and the text includes pedagogical features focusing on teaching applications. It is the only development textbook that emphasizes applications to educational settings in this way. For the revision new material has been added throughout the text, including a completely new chapter on peers and families and the expansion of the content on personal, social and moral development into two chapters. By the end of the text, students will have a clear understanding of the important role of schools and teachers in children’s lives.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide on Children's Psychology.......2001-04-27

I think that this book is an excellent textbook for teaching entry level college psychology courses and upper level high school courses on children's development and thinking. I really enjoyed using this textbook in one of my Elementary Education psychology courses mainly because it gives interesting theoretical views about children's thinking. This textbook has theories from well-renowned psychologists such as Piaget, Vygotsky, Jean Jacques Rousseau, John Locke, and Freud. If I had to recommend this book to someone, I would recommend that teachers, psychologists, counselors, and anyone who deals with children on a daily basis obtain a copy of this book. It is an excellent source of information for understanding children's behaviors, learning styles, and cognitive capabilities at varying stages of life.

She used to go ballistic when she had to mentally form a three-dimensional object from a two-dimensional image. After doing the Building Thinking Skills Book 1, she says it's a breeze. Her nonverbal scores used to be low. Now they're higher than her verbal, which were already high. Her creativity and problem solving have also blossomed since she started using these materials.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun.......2007-03-10

this was a Christmas gift for my 11 yr. old grandson. We have had so much fun doing this together and his father joined in to add even more fun. Winter has flown by much faster with this FAMILY TIME craft project. We are looking forward to logging our flight distances as soon as the weather warms a bit. Quiet time together becames lots of laughs and individual creative juices began to flow. who knew paper airplanes could be so much fun.

5 out of 5 stars More and more paper.......2007-02-20

The paper in my printer has been stolen, all the loose paper in the house has gone the same route. Flying through the air and landing in various places like behind the couch, under the tables, into the closets, and onto the bookshelves.

3 out of 5 stars good plane designs but didn't like the scary gruesome pictures.......2006-12-16

They have some planes with preprinted pictures that I would have prefered they left out like a vampire and ghoul. I don't know why they have to make stuff which doesn't need to be scary.

5 out of 5 stars Great Birthday Gift That Never Goes Out of Style!.......2006-11-20

I first bought one of these for my then 6 yo son. He enjoyed it so much that I bought one for his friend's birthday. Finally, the light bulb went off and I bought a bunch more to have instant gifts for the plethora of birthday parties he gets invited to during the year. Boy, am I glad I did that! The cost is great, no one else ever gives the same gift, it is easily transportable, doesn't require batteries, entertains for hours without beeping or playing annoying music, and is educational (Okay, I admit that "educational" can be the kiss of death for a kid gift, but The Kids' Paper Air Plane Book is a fun gift that happens to incorporate some educational value, not some geeky educational bore of a toy that is briefly entertaining). Even the stray kid who didn't seem to "get it" at first, soon fell in love with this book. I am about to order 6 more. I need another 2 for my boys (ages 6 and 9) and 4 more as gifts. These never go out of style. BTW, I turn into Cool Mom whenever I am able to help them with any plane struggles. That doesn't happen to my 9 yo anymore. He now even makes his own awesome airplanes out of plain paper, while his non-plane-making peers look on in amazement! Definitely a gift winner! It's also easy to wrap, which is no small thing in this world of oddly-shaped packages.

2 out of 5 stars I doubt a 4-year-old would be able to read this........2006-06-10

This is probably a good paper airplane book, but I'm assuming that the reviewers here who have small children are largely reading the book themselves and then showing their kids how to do it, or even just making the planes for the kids.

After taking a look inside the book, I'm having a hard time imagining that a typical 4-year-old is going to be able to read and understand it. I mean, before we build the plane, let's talk about stability and aerodynamics, shall we, Jr.? Please. Older kids will probably really enjoy this book, but the age range of 4-8 seems a bit off. Probably should start at at least age 7 if you are expecting your kid to actually be able to read this him/herself.

Hmm...interesting that I am getting negative "helpful" reviews for simply pointing out that this book's language is too advanced for the 4-year-olds it claims to target. I would be mighty interested if your 4-year-old can read and understand the aerodynamics concepts presented at the beginning of the book. Yeah...didn't think so.

That doesn't mean that it's not a fun book, but I am simply pointing out that it is not one that most of the kids in its purported age range can digest themselves.

Brown Bag Success, written by Sandra Nissenberg and Barbara Pearl (both registered dieticians), contains great tips for packing lunches safely, how to make healthy food selections, how to be creative so the lunches will be more fun for your children to eat and how to even get them to help prepare the lunches... as well as a 4-week menu with great recipes! Although I do not feel this book is for the family who doesn't have any trouble packing a great variety of healthy lunches every month, it would definitely be a great help for families (and moms!) who are stuck on packing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with chips and an apple, day after day! It's also for those very special moms who are so busy and have no clue what to pack that they often give in to purchasing those cute little prepackaged lunches that cost a small fortune. Brown Bag Success is a great little book, we're going to try making the homemade tortilla chips next! Also, out of the twenty planned lunches that are featured in the 4-week menu, only a handful of them include peanut butter. If your child is allergic to nuts you can easily substitute items from the other menu suggestions, there are plenty of creative ideas here! - Michelle Jones, Founder of BetterBudgeting.com

5 out of 5 stars Covers it all!.......2007-10-09

This is a must-have book. It will provide you with everything you need: useful, simple recipes that kids will actually eat, simple nutritional information, organizational tips, and tips and tricks for making the meal fun and getting your kids to eat the food you'd like them to eat. Honestly, this book is so practical. It's been the most bang I've gotten for a buck in a long time!

1 out of 5 stars Not very novel, creative, or different.......2007-09-01

I got better ideas from parenting magazines. These were not very novel, creative, or healthy. It was also very thin. It was just a bunch of different kinds of sandwiches and soups. I was looking for something to break out of the rut, and this was not it. If the ONLY thing you can think of is PB&J, then you might get something out of it, but for those of us who can think of at least a little more variety, don't waste your money. I think the people who rated this multiple stars must be trying to boost the product's rating so they can sell theirs back, lol. :)

3 out of 5 stars Not as healthy as I had hoped.......2007-06-01

"Healthy" is a somewhat relative term. The homemade recipes inside this book are certainly healthier than processed junk food, but I don't consider ingredients like chow mein noodles, american cheese or mini marshmallows to be "healthy". The usual topics found in healthy cooking books like the importance of whole grains, the pitfalls of trans fats or the importance of using organic produce, are pretty much absent from "Brown Bag Success". However, in terms of making lunches kids will like, eat and not trade, the book is filled with ideas. If you have a child who really will not eat their homemade lunch, you are bound to find some ideas in here that will help.

As another reviewer already noted, the recipes are heavy on peanut butter. I would say about one third of the recipes are peanut butter based. So if you have a child who loves PBJ, and you just can't make another one, then this book might just be for you. My daughter really doesn't like PBJ anymore, so they aren't much help to me.

On the other hand, some of the non peanut butter recipes look good enough to eat myself. The "Apple-Cinnamon Sandwich" puts a cream cheese-apple-walnut-celery spread between slices of raisin bread. The "Mini Drumsticks" are chicken wings soaked in an asian marinade and then baked. The chicken tabouleh salad and sweet coleslaw look good as well (But I'm not sure my daughter would so much as touch them. She dislikes most salad.) The baked goods all look good as well.

All in all I just don't feel most of these recipes are healthy enough for my family. My daughter has a bit of a weight problem, so I have to be really careful with what she eats. On the other hand the ideas for making a packed lunch more appealing to children are helpful and some of the recipes look tasty.

4 out of 5 stars A great addition to my lunch repertoire........2007-05-09

This cookbook is geared more for kids. However, I was stuck in a lunch rut, and turned to this cookbook for help. It is wonderful. All of the recipes are easy with a small amount of ingredients. It really has added a lot of spice to my lunch repertoire.

Try the Peanut butter chocolate chip muffins. They are to die for.

    Book Description

In Puppet Mania!, a master of the art brings kids thirteen original projects they can make on their own, primarily using everyday household materials. Many of the projects the author includes here are for puppets he himself designed and created as a kid. There's Sock Puppy, Banana Buddy, Running Rabbit and a gaggle of other endearing creatures. Aside from explicit directions, Kennedy provides construction tips and troubleshooting advice.

Puppet Mania! is more than just a project book: It also gives kids the know-how they need to turn their creations into characters--lip synching, body movements, eye contact and movement, and, most important, imagination. To that end, Kennedy kick-starts readers' creativity with a character worksheet that has room to enter the character's name, favorite phrase, hobbies, and physical characteristics.

With directions for customizing their puppets and tips for maneuvering them believably, kids will want to get started in no time!

5 out of 5 stars My students love the book!.......2007-08-09

I am an Elementary Art Teacher and the ideas in this book are perfectly suited for my students and class. I have, also, used the ideas at home with my own children. It's a colorful, well organized, easy to read guide ranging from easy to more challenging puppet making ideas for kids.

The Amazon book description clearly indicates that the book is geared toward children. I don't understand why the other reviewers didn't read what they were buying. If you don't know what you're buying, then there is a great chance that you won't get what you want. It was frustrating reading those reviews and it almost caused me not to purchase the book.

Anyway, my students and I love the book and have enjoyed making the puppets! I'd love to see more books and perhaps some demonstration CDs that my class could watch before beginning a project. Just a idea.

2 out of 5 stars A nice starter for children........2007-06-10

I was alittle disappointed when I receieved this book. God knows the title is a bit of an exageration. If you're buying for a child who needs craft projects for a rainy day then this is the book for you.
As an adult with a career in puppet building I found it a waste of money. Unless you're making a show that revolves around paper plate puppets.

3 out of 5 stars a good start for begginers, great for elementary classrooms.......2006-11-05

If you are just into puppet making for fun and not really into the art of making them, this book is for you. The puppets built inside are very basic and developed sot hat anybody can make them. It's a fun book, but personaly I felt it was a little childish and didn't really touch base on some of other techniques. If you are looking to make a more muppet style puppet this book does not cover it. however his second book Puppet Planet is an excelent book that goes into more detail and more profetional style puppet making.

5 out of 5 stars great book for children.......2006-08-08

the book is not for professional puppet makers.
most of the puppets are hand puppets made of simple materials that can be find or improvise at home - it's great project book for children.

    5 out of 5 stars great ideas.......2006-03-28

lots of different puppet ideas. They are not too difficult, great to make with kids.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Acceleration Decisions.......2005-08-29

The Iowa Acceleration Scale (IAS) is a "must have" tool in the process for determining the appropriateness of whole-grade acceleration. What I like most about the IAS is that it is research based and patently objective. The IAS also requires a team approach which only serves to add confidence to whatever decision is ultimately arrived upon. Further, each child is assessed wholistically with individual items weighted based on relevance.

The IAS also provides alternate suggestions for serving the academically advanced child in the event that whole-grade acceleration is not recommended.

The manual is a very easy read and the entire process is user friendly. The IAS Manual removes the mystery and uncertainty from what would typically be a rather difficult task - deciding whether or not to whole-grade accelerate a child in school.

I highly recommend the IAS for any and all parents and educators who find themselves faced with the incredible task of trying to decide how best to meet the educational needs of a bright or gifted child. To borrow (and twist) a line from Shakespeare: If to accelerate or not to accelerate is the question - then the IAS is the answer.

A Note of caution to parents and IAS team members: The IAS process should be open and transparent. All team members should have the opportunity to read and review the manual prior to and during the process. Therefore, be sure the "team leader" does not monopolize the process or attempt to create their own procedure for completion of the IAS. The manual very clearly states the proper procedures to follow to ensure the process flows smoothly - and objectively.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource!.......2004-04-03

I refer to this book often when working with families and educators that are considering whole-grade acceleration for a gifted student. This is an invaluable tool that appears to be very user-friendly.
