A Great Toolkit to Avoid Failure.......2007-03-25
f I were in a bookstore, I never would have bought this book. It's coated thick with superlatives and overpromises of success like:
A foolproof road map to success. Don't grow your business without it.
Nothing is a foolproof road map to success. That statement would have made me distrust the book from the outset.
As it was, I ordered the book from Amazon which meant I read the Amazon recommendations before the cover of the book. As you can see, I gave this a 4 star rating - so I obviously enjoyed it.
My 4 stars came from three qualities of this book.
1. It's concise - business books love to over-explain or try to micromanage their readers. Be the Elephant is less than 220 pages.
2. It provides tools - There are more than a few very helpful, simple tools for business analysis that I began using before finishing the book.
3. Website - the book is backed up by a website that has templates for the tools.
All in all, the book is built to quickly give people necessary tools to avoid failure. The tools don't guarantee success, but they go a long way to helping you avoid failure while also avoiding analysis paralysis.
So, even though I apparently don't recommend the cover quotes, the book is an excellent toolkit for small business owners.
"Be the Elephant"- Another Kaplan Must Read.......2007-03-13
"Be the Elephant" was even more enjoyable and more impactful than Mr.Kaplan's first book, "Bag the Elephant".
Being a marketer of promotional/advertising programming, within the CPG industry, I found Mr. Kaplan's writings to be right on target! I have utilized a few of his marketing ideas and sales tools, which have assisted me greatly in closing some huge deals within the CPG industry.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn effective sales techniques, in order to land and keep BIG clients! I can't wait for Mr. Kaplans next Elephant book to be published, as his books have given me the knowledge, tools and confidence to improve my chances of landing and keeping major accounts within the CPG industry.
Be the Elephant: Build a Bigger ,Better Business.......2007-02-24
In following Steve's easy to follow steps in his First book to" Bag the elephant, we bagged our first elephant, and have now in the last year and a half bagged 4 more.
In the "Be the Elephant" book I was glad to find out that we have been doing many of the things that Steve recommends to build a bigger ,better business. One of our mottos here at my company is that we need to Grow or we will die. We have increased our Sales 6 fold and our Net Profit 11 fold in the last 7 years. Along the way we have increased our infrastructure to support the growth with qualified employees from outside the company, but with the first choice being and employee to promote from within.
We have increased our revenues by Vertically selling more of our items within our existing accounts,ie: Packaging items to the accounts who were only buying Corrugated and Vice Versa, thereby being a One stop shop for the customers shipping supplies. We have grown horizontally into other geographic areas in the US with our new "Elephant "Customers which has been the best of both worlds for us.
Due to the new geographic area scenarios, we are evaluating if it is a good business decision to open up a Distribution Center in a new Geographic area by using Steve's Risk vs. Reward factor.
I have also implemented "Start it and Chart it" with great success.
I have monthly Manager Meetings where I now use Steve's chart, where we review progress reports and timelines that are attached. I find that now that people are accountable, and on the hook to perform, there is peer pressure on them to fulfill the task.
I am still working on creating a USP for my company.
My company formed Strategic Alliances 4 years ago with our major Vendors .It was put forth from the beginning of the growth process to these Vendors that the ones who partner with me in the beginning, will be the ones that I will be loyal to in return as we grow. My largest Vendors have grown from thousand of dollars a year back in 2003, to millions of dollars a year in 2007.
I feel we have been successful by building the organization with good people and developing there skills to best suit the job at hand. We have maintained steady growth and profitability by keeping" Service" at the forefront of our business model. We will get the Customer their product, when they want it. Also, making sure that as we get bigger our current customers will not see any decrease in service.
Totally Motivating.......2007-02-18
With this book I WILL "Be The Elephant". As a small business owner, rarely have I read two books this descriptive and easy to read as Kaplan's 1st book, Bag the Elephant" and this follow up "Be the Elephant". This is a GREAT follow up but can certainly stand on its own. Wish there could be more. I feel I am attending a special instructional seminar on reaching success just for me. Keep them coming.

Without a doubt, he's the coolest cat out there in comics. With his crazy insane appetite, his total love for Odie (kidding) and attacking the mailman on a regular basis. This is one that wont disappoint, but again this is Garfield so its hard to do that anyways. Love having 3 books together in one pack, it just goes to show. Even after all these years his comics are as funny as ever.

Book Description
Contrary to accepted wisdom, rapid urban growth can leave communities permanently scarred, deeply in debt, with unaffordable housing, a lost sense of community, and sacrificed environmental quality.
In Better NOT Bigger, Fodor explodes the fundamental myth that growth is good for us and that more development will bring in more tax money, add jobs, lower housing costs, and reduce property taxes. Lively and well-illustrated, Better NOT Bigger provides insights, ideas, and tools to empower citizens to switch off their local "growth machine" by debunking the pro-growth rhetoric. Highly accessible to ordinary citizens as well as professional planners.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully Insightful.......2006-06-14
Mr. Fodor has done an excellent job of exposing the ins and outs of urban planning and growth. His sources are prolific and complete with a well balanced presentation of the challenges of growth and development to any community. For me, this book was a "suspicions confirmed" expose' of why it becomes so much more expensive to live in a city. This book is an excellent read with many interesting case studies, charts, analyses, and graphics and I have reviewed it and quoted it often as I have prepared to address our local planning commission and city council. Most of my urban planning and growth questions were addressed in this book.
An Excellent Debunking of the Pro-Growth Myths.......2006-03-25
The public has come to accept growth as natural, or at least inevitable, as a result of unbalanced coverage in the media. Pro-growth forces, such as the building and real estate industries, are a significant source of advertising revenue, so there is little motivation to present alternative views. Fordor, in his book, presents carefully documented rebuttals to most of the common pro-growth arguments, making this an excellent book for readers who are concerned about environmental and municipal planning issues.
Free Book, Anyone?.......2002-02-27
A major underlying assumption in our society today is that growth is good. We need growth! Growth is good for business, good for the community, good for you and me.
Except, of course, that it doesn't work that way.
Who sez?
Eben Fodor, that's who. Fodor is a professional community planning consultant from Eugene, Oregon. He has written a book that defies the conventional wisdom, and backs it up with solid evidence. Its title is "Better Not Bigger: How to Take Control of Urban Growth and Improve Your Community" (New Society Publishers, 1999).
Chapter 3 is called "The 12 Big Myths of Growth". Most of these myths are so deeply entrenched that people never even question them. However, Fodor refers to authoritative studies showing that just the opposite is true in each case. ... I will buy a copy of this book for any Asheville area politician or business leader who asks me. If you would like to see your representative get a copy, please call him or her and tell them to get their order in! ...
Right on Target!.......2000-07-20
This book was terrific! I had bought this book to help enhance my understanding of a controversial $1 billion plus expansion project in my community. Eben Fodor's comments and insights were 100% right on target. This book was like a blueprint as to how this mega deal is being forced down the throats of the citizens of my community. From the elistist few of the "urban growth machine" that would benefit from this project, to the creation of a false sense of urgency to push through our city council for a 30 year tax break for the developer, to the p.r. blitz offering up false either/or choices...everything discussed in "Better not Bigger" is happening in my hometown. This is absolutely "must reading" for anyone who wants to understand how the "urban growth machine" can ruin community. What Eben Fodor teaches is that smart growth is better then stupid growth. If you care about the community you call "home".....read this book!
Right on Target.......2000-07-18
This book was terrific! I bought this book to help enhance my understanding of a controversial over $1 billion mall expansion project in my community. Fodor's comments and insight were 100% right on target. From the elitist few who would benefit from it pushing this mega deal, to creation of a false sense of urgency to rush through a 30 year tax break to the developers, to offering up false either/or choices......this book was like a blueprint to how this project is being forced on the taxpayers. I found it extremely insightful and enlightening and would recommend it as absolute "must reading" for anyone who wishes to understand the urban growth machine and it can ruin a community. The bottom line is that smarter growth is better then stupid growth, and that is what Eben Fodor teaches those of us who truly care about our community.

Book Description
When it comes to business growth, bigger is not always better. The key to achieving growth is to change the way we think about it. Genuine growth has more to do with reaching maximum potential than reaching maximum size. Based on ten years of research and dozens of personal interviews by the author, Bigger Isn't Always Better identifies seven key habits of mind that lead to real growth, and shows, through many examples, how they have been applied successfully. Examples include Darcy Williams at Nike, who championed a range of products for women that did not fit into the established market segments (men) of her employer; Bill Greenwood of Burlington Northern, who found a way to turn truckers, his railroad's most difficult competitors, into its best customers; Al Bru, who eliminated trans fats from Pepsico's Frito-Lay snack foods and got health-conscious consumers to embrace the products; and Jane Friedman, HarperCollins publisher, who was determined to give her company a brand identity and reduce its dependence on a few blockbuster books. Combining real-life stories and insightful analysis, Bigger Isn't Always Better shows how to move an organization forward -- to grow smarter, not fatter.
Customer Reviews:
Bigger Isn't Always Better.......2007-07-15
Often in business, we spend so much time and effort on making our business bigger, adding new products, and focusing on stock market prices that we forget to ask ourselves if this growth is actually helping our business or if it is slowly draining our resources until we are no longer productive.
Bigger Isn't Always Better examines this issue and suggests that growth is not necessarily about getting bigger. Bigness is not sustainable. Instead, the author suggests that business look at growth as moving forward and continuously progressing. This kind of growth is purposeful, thoughtfully planned with the intention of bettering the business' products and customer services.
There are quite a few gems in this book. I found the descriptions of the 21 mind bugs particularly useful. Mind bugs are common ways that we think and things that we tell ourselves that distort reality and act as hurdles to healthy growth. I also thought that the section "Are You a Fixer or a Grower?" was quite enlightening. This section analyses what drives each of these personality types and how they correspond with very different business strategies.
How growth-oriented business goals can kill the golden goose.......2006-04-13
Robert M. Tomasko's BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER: THE NEW MINDSET FOR BUSINESS GROWTH draws some important distinctions between growth and expansion. While increased size is desirable, too often companies grow too quickly and many may ultimately see their demise in their very growth-oriented goals. Real growth lines in progress and knowing how to link success to strategic plans and logical organizational changes - the types of changes BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER covers in chapters which probe growth cycles, judgement calls, and knowing how to access opportunity for its real-world applications.
What is your mindset?.......2006-02-28
What we have in this volume is a brilliant explanation of what "real business growth" is, and, how to achieve and then sustain it. Tomasko suggests seven characteristics which "growers" share. They are guided and informed by a mindset which recognizes that real growth "is about reaching full potential, not maximum size. It means progress, not excess; it is fueled by imagination, not expansion." He devotes a separate chapter to each of the seven common characteristics. In Part 1, he describes what growth is and isn't, then in Part 2, he explains what growers do. They know what they need to know and where to locate it. They know what they want to achieve and tell the truth when pursuing it. They initiate creative attention to generate and sustain forward movement, meanwhile winning hearts and minds of others involved. They master what Tomasko characterizes as "momentum with bounce." They know when to let go, agreeing with Jason Jennings that "if it's DOA, bury it." And they "share the wealth" when collaborative effort achieves the given objectives.
The more "growers" there are within a given enterprise, the more likely that it will achieve "real business growth." Hence the importance of recognizing and supporting them, of course, but also doing so with regard to prospective "growers" as well. Every effort should be made to accelerate their development. When paraphrasing one of the exemplary growers, psychologist Martin Seligman, Tomasko observes that "business is not just about fixing what is broken. It is about taking what is best in an enterprise and nurturing its further development. Leading this kind of growth requires a very different mentality from that needed to manage ongoing activities. The best growth champions are not the people who are in charge of today's successful organizations. What makes best sense for sustaining the status quo is often irrelevant or counterproductive for surpassing it." When Reginald Jones selected his successor as GE's next CEO, he urged Jack Welch to "Blow it up!"
While re-reading this book, as is my custom, I highlighted key passages. In this instance more than 100 which caught my eye. Here are two representative excerpts.
When knowing where to look for growth opportunities: "Blinders from existing business models or getting caught up in the hot concept (convergence, deregulation, Internet-means-that-everything-is-different, and so on) will also limit our ability to see the market clearly. When we see something new, we seldom stop to appreciate it for what it is. Instead, evolution seems to have trained us -- hard-wired our brains -- to slot things into categories or explanations that are derived from our past experiences. In pigeonholing things this way, wee run the risk of filtering out what it is that makes the novel news." (page 119)
However, "As Picasso once noted: `Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.' The trick is to plan the movement from old to new in a way that does not lead to mindless destruction and chaos. This means starting out with the grower's clear idea of somewhere better to end up, and knowing what is wanted with as much clarity as what is not wanted. That's how real growth happens. This kind of growth, of course, has little to do with getting better or prevailing over others." (page 238)
In this book, Tomasko shares brilliant insights in combination with practical recommendations which can help his reader to develop and then sustain a new mindset, "an internal logic system, the model that you carry around in your head." With meticulous care, Tomasko explains how and why a mindset gives birth to our beliefs and assumptions, how it determines what facts we notice and what we make of them. "And even more important, it determines what [we] do as a result." I continue to be amazed by those decision-makers whose mindset causes them to follow the same course of action which had repeatedly failed before... and then expect different results. That doesn't make any sense, does it?
Book Description
Now that Elisa's in second grade, she's taking charge of whatever comes her way -- from a baby-sitter who doesn't know how to change a diaper to an airplane trip without her parents.
Of course, it's not easy taking charge when your big brother thinks you're too little and your little brother runs amok! But Elisa is determined to make everything work out in the end. And what better way to celebrate being seven and a half than a day of eating nothing but chocolate. Chocolate cookies, chocolate milk, chocolate bars . . . chocolate and more chocolate, from morning to night.
With these delicious new episodes from the whirlwind life of Elisa Michaels, Johanna Hurwitz entertains us once again with a vivid portrayal of family life as seen from four feet tall.
Customer Reviews:
Elisa is genuine, funny and extremely likeable........2004-06-17
Elisa Michaels is a second-grader living in New York City. She has both an older and a younger brother. Each chapter is a separate story about Elisa and her family members. In the first chapter, Elisa misses her grandmother, who lives in Florida. She won't be able to see her for seven months! Elisa's mom invents a way for Elisa to "have breakfast with Grandma."
Several stories deal with Marshall, who is two years old when the book begins. Elisa cares for her little brother while the new babysitter plays chess. She goes all out to keep him happy. In another story, the family worries that Marshall is getting too old for his pacifier. When they visit the zoo, Elisa is inspired by a baby gorilla and she niftily solves her little brother's pacifier problem. In "Marshall Makes Mischief," Marshall is determined to open the library's fake Christmas presents. Elisa tries hard, but she can't control him. She does, however, come to a big realization about the library and about presents.
Elisa learns that having wishes come true can be bittersweet. In "Chocolate All Day Long," she gets permission to eat only chocolate for one entire glorious day --- but feels differently toward chocolate by dinnertime. In the last chapter, she travels alone to visit her grandmother and soon learns about homesickness. This chapter neatly mirrors the book's first story, with Elisa's grandmother helping her "have breakfast with" her mom.
Debbie Tilley illustrates the book with adorable cartoony pictures. They show rather old-fashioned looking characters, which suits the classic feel of the stories.
If you're looking for wild adventure, look elsewhere. These are gentle, good-hearted, winning stories full of humor and emotion without being sentimental. Elisa is genuine, funny and extremely likeable. I highly recommend this warm and wonderful celebration of family.

He's Back and BETTER than EVER!.......2006-04-05
I purchased the follow-up to "Bear Cookin'" on a whim and was very pleased with the purchase. I found that PJ Gray's writing style and great stories that intertwine with his recipes makes for, not only, good cooking but an overall great read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking, especially for groups or parties. The recipes are easy to work with and the ingredients are generally what most people would have in their pantries already, which makes the recipes just that much more appealing. I've already purchased several copies for friends and have recommended this book to many people, from experienced cooks to novices. Definitely a great buy!
