Book Description
Late one evening in the summer of 2003, Erec Toso arrived home to his wife and children after an ordinary day at his university office. In the darkness of his yard, a rattlesnake lay along the path, basking in the post-monsoon coolness. Toso, lost in thought, never saw the snake, which struck him on the foot and injected a huge dose of venom.Zero at the Bone is a deeply personal narrative about Toso's physical recovery and emotional transformation following this near-death experience. In elegant prose that inspires as much as it unsettles, Toso takes the reader along with him on his expedition into the uncharted territory of cellular damage, hallucination, and ultimately profound spiritual awakening. On all levels, it is a book about pain. Toso spares no detail in his accounts of agonizing hospital procedures, in his revelations about rattlesnake lore, or in his descriptions of the wide-ranging effects of snake venom. But quickly the reader realizes that the physical pain of the snakebite is only the more tangible marker of the psychological pain and turmoil that Toso endures in the emotional journey that ensues. In the months that follow his terrifying attack, priorities, daily habits, family relations, and definitions of self all come into question. What is predictable becomes problematic; what is comfortable becomes disconcerting. In a story that hinges on a common fear about an unlikely eventthat of a snakebiteToso uncovers a more widespread reality that many of us do not fear enoughcomplacency.

Super Book That Ruined My Life...........2007-07-18
"Zero at the Bone" has ruined my life. His writings are the words, sentences and expressions that I would like to be able to use to express my thoughts, feelings and experiences. However, I know I will never be able to do it, as well as he has.
"Zero" is the story of Erec Toso, a 40ish Tucson writing teacher and runner, who received a life threatening rattlesnake bite that affected and changed his life (for worse and better). It was one of the best written and most engaging books I have ever read. I have highly recommended it to all my male-female angst friends, aging athletes, Tucsonans, and lovers of fine writing (that covers everyone I know).
"Zero" is actually 3 books: First, before the bite, he writes of the male-aging angst: "My heart grows hard when certain subjects come up. It bars entry, switches on the security system, lets threats trigger the lockdown of emotions under siege.....There are questions I am not strong enough to entertain, that are too big to digest......" I call this part of the book - "Telling life How It Is Before a Snakebite".
Then, there is adventure and mystery, as we suffer through the actual physical trauma of the injury with him, not knowing how this will ultimately affect Erec or his family or if he will even survive.
Finally, it becomes philosophically descriptive of how his life changed and actually benefited from the snake-bite.
I can identify with Toso; He lives where I live, thinks my thoughts, shares my concerns about the world and the environment. The glaring difference is that he is able express these feelings.
And in addition to "ruining my life", his writing may have also "saved" my life by helping me realize I'm leading MY LIFE now. "This is not a practice run; there are no do-overs."
It's not (so much) about the snake..........2007-06-18
If you are scanning the reviews, trying to decide whether or not to buy this book, I can tell you this: If you enjoy reading literary nonfiction, just tap that "One Click" button and get the book on its way to you. Having read a preview of the book before it was released, I looked forward to reading it with great anticipation. In fact, when it arrived in the mail, I pulled it out, opened to the first page and was so taken with Toso's use of language that I began to read it aloud--with no audience other than my cat. I read the first 12 pages that way. There are those who make good storytellers because they know how to weave a compelling tale, follow an ebb and flow of suspense and pathos. But the true masters are those who can render those same elements using language that sings. Toso has made his mark as a master. Let's hope he's working on a second book--but that he needn't entertain Death to produce it.
Blood is thicker than water...thank you Erec for writing this book........2007-05-28
I relate to the struggles outlined in this book. Values, your own, or what you thought were your own, can shift as you age, and sometimes you find that what you thought was so important really doesn't even count. The story is one most people have some affinity with. A very good read.
My book club just read this, and there was a lot to talk about. Everyone in our group seemed to have something to say. The author happens to be my first cousin. I had emailed him just before the meeting and he responded with a couple of questions for us. They are worth sharing, and they are as follows:
* How does water work as both literal bringer of life and metaphor for other aspects of the mind?
* How does your self-talk work to keep you (the reader)from direct experience of life energy in your day-to-day routines? What are the stories you tell yourself and how do they serve you in some way?
* How does trauma or crisis contain seeds of possible change when it happens?
* When do you feel most alive, most "in the zone" of contentment, presence, or communion with others?
* What is the role of "observing witness" in watching the mind and how can it help to disengage from all the emotions that get triggered when things don't go according to plan?
I hated to kick everyone out at the end of the evening. Everyone wanted to stay, to keep sharing. Thank-you Erec for writing a book that I could really connect with, and that our little neighborhood book club had such success with.
Masterful.......2007-05-09
Erec Toso, by stepping on a rattlesnake, unwittingly embarked upon the modern version of the shamanic journey. He descended through pain and near death to that place where important gifts are given and brought one back for all of us: the message to wake up and pay attention.
Toso skillfully braids together multidimensional narratives, much like, in his words, the healing symbol of the caduceus is balanced by intertwining snakes. One level is that of the rattlesnake and its environment. We must wake up to the fact that we are destroying its southwestern desert habitat, and by extension, all habitats. Henry David Thoreau and Edward Abbey would approve of Toso's fierce call to change our relationship with the places in which we live.
Another level is paying attention in our relationships with each other. Toso describes, in sometimes embarrassingly honest detail, his own journey with the toughest relationships of all--family. Toso calls us to notice the ways in which we hurt each other and offers paying attention as the first step in healing our family wounds. When Zen masters speak of "chop wood, carry water," the work of transformation sounds bland. What Toso describes, however, is the messy, sloppy, and sometimes jagged business of struggling to jettison old patterns of thinking, reacting, and feeling in that psychic caldron we call family. This healing work is hardly bland.
While others might have descended into a narcissistic tale of personal triumph or a ranting diatribe against the evils of modernity, Toso does neither. With self-deprecating humor he offers up his own journey with all of it imperfections. His observations and lessons learned along the way are humbly displayed as one example of how we can negotiate these times and places in which we precariously live. Toso masterfully crafted his message to make it accessible and real, and his call to wake up got my attention.
we are not seperate.......2007-04-23
Erec Toso strikes as deeply with his compellingly, insightful description of his personal spiritual journey as any rattlesnake. A reminder that we cannot deny our co-dependence with nature. In this time of awakening to our place on this earth Zero at the Bone brings us into direct contact with the forces that resonate in our primitive nature. Zero at the Bone brings us back to something we are losing in our everyday lives. Something we cannot afford to forget.

Superb Writing, Content, Style But Not For the Faint of Heart.......2006-12-09
I have been reading true crime for as long as I can remember. And although you always feel frustration, anger, disgust, and a wide variety of other emotions toward the murderers and sympathy for the victims and their families, this particular book hit me harder than any I have ever read. Often times I was unsure as to whether I could continue reading; not because the book was boring or not well written (quite the contrary, actually), but because of the emotions that the paragraphs describing the heartless, brutal, selfish crimes commmited by Gene Simmons evoked from me.
For writing style, detail, and organization, this is one of the best books I have ever read. As for the crime that is the foundation, it is the worst about which I have ever read.
Chilling.......2005-05-04
The story of Ronald Gene Simmons and the worst family mass murder in US history. These murders actually happened in my hometown of Dover, AR when I was 8 years old. The book does very well at bringing the craziness of Simmons to the forefront and will give you chills. An excellent read.
A must-read, cannot-put-down, horrifying true tale.......2002-08-04
Zero at the Bone is without a doubt one of the most horrifying accounts of family massacre ever written. Williams very clearly gets across to the reader the contents of Ronald Gene Simmons' twisted, sick mind. His obsessive lust/love for his daughter Sheila is horrifying; and the detailed steps Simmons took to wipe out his immediate family detail him as nothing less than totally mad. The reader cannot help but feel saddened for Sheila, for she is truly a victim of her father's depraved actions. Simmons' wife Becky is a tragic figure, yet she possesses a core of steel which sustains her up until her murder. Simmons is nothing short of a monster, and Williams spares no words in getting this point across. A note of caution: DO NOT read this book before bedtime!! It is capable of producing some of the worst nightmares, and I would not recommend it for those with weak constitutions. I am an Arkansas native, and remember very vividly these murders. And 15 years later, it still sends shudders down my spine.
GOOD book........2001-09-10
WHOO! Simmons was one serious nut. And I have never seen a spiraling slide into nutdom so artfully rendered. The authors did a remarkable job at explaining a terribly complex scenario that ended in mass murder. The tale of lunacy, incest, and violence is gripping and very freakish. Simmons is one of the worst crazies America ever produced.
A true crime treasure.......2000-10-25
The story of Ronald Gene Simmons is masterfully told. We learn about Gene's life, his family, his intense love and jealousy, his fears and suspicions, and his murders. The monster is made human and we are better able to understand why a man would murder his entire family, then undertake another carefully orchestrated murder spree before docilely surrendering to police.
Book Description
This is the first book to describe the well-established and powerful therapy called Zero Balancing, and to explain how and why it works. Uniquely, this therapy touches simultaneously the bones and joints of the body and the flow of energy through them. Areas of the body where there is a loss of function or potential, through stress, accident or habit, may be restored to full vitality. More generally, this is a book about the anatomy and physiology of energy: where it flows, how it behaves, and its relationship to the structure of the body. Whether you are a health-care practitioner or a client of one of the many complementary therapies, this book will explain the very foundations of the use of energy in healing and show how to enhance the effects of any therapy which involves touch.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not the source.......2006-05-13
Explaining energy is not easy. This book will help you to understand energy in the context of what Fritz Smith has brought to energy and bodyworkers. I recommend Fritz's own books: Innter Bridges and Alchemy of Touch.
An inspiring book on a unique healing modality.......2000-08-09
This is an excellent book, particularly after you have taken the Zero Balancing Core I workshop. It really should be required reading. I found the writing to be clear, complete and perfectly in line with the information received in the workshop. I've been a practicing massage therapist since 1982 and a massage teacher since 1991. I took my first Zero Balancing workshop in November, 1999 and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a tremendous amount of information to grasp from a different perspective, and as with any new technique, I felt pretty lost and overwhelmed when the group split up and we were on our own. Luckily, an associate of mine had purchased the book from the instructor and several months later she insisted that I read it. I am so grateful. I have to admit, I wasn't practicing the technique with any regularity and the reasons I took the workshop in the first place were fading. Well, this book has completely revalidated my understanding of this powerful work and I have just ordered my own copy! The information is totally inspiring, mind opening, and reinforcing for anyone serious about perfecting the art of Zero Balancing ... I recommend it highly.

Book Description
Katherine Driscoll is just three weeks away from disaster: foreclosure on her home and business, even the sale of her beloved dog. She has no hope of raising the $91,000 she so desperately needs--until the father she hasn't seen for thirty years writes to her, offering her enough money to solve her problems...if she will do one thing in return.
But Katherine may never learn what that is. When she arrives in Austin, she is hours too late: her father has died in a bizarre accident. As she sifts through the cryptic notes he left behind, she finds herself caught up in terrible family secrets--and a deadly illicit trade. The more she learns, the more determined she becomes to prove her father's death was no accident. In doing so, Katherine will make a bitter enemy--one desperate enough to kill...and perhaps, kill again.

4kittens.......2006-07-09
I bought this used, thinking it was first in a series by this author. Even though it wasn't part of a series, and since I haven't read anything by this author before, I loaned it to a friend. She said it was okay. I read it and enjoyed it, it was hard to put down. I have loaned it to another friend, to see if she likes it.
I loved it.......2004-07-12
I thought this book was great. I found out about it from another author. She said it was good & it was.
Hard to put down. You want to keep going so that you can find out who the killer is.
very well written.
You can't go wrong with this mystery.......2001-05-28
Walker does an excellent job with this book.
As you eneter Katherine's world it's crumbling away and then she gets notice that her father who she hasn't seen or heard from in year dies. She goes off to see him off and go through his extate. When she comes across something that doesn't seem right and this embarks her on a journey that will change her life.
Walker paints a powerful picture with her words. In one scene they come across a lion traped in a cage. You can actually see the lion and feel the cage and his imperfections with your hands. It will send chills up your spine.
This is her best book and the only one that stands on it's own. Her other books deal with continuing characters and are great, too.
Read. Enjoy. Then take a trip to a large zoo and enjoy the animals.
If you liked Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal with all there power you'll enjoy Mary Willis Walkers' work.
"Zero At The Bone" Moved Too Slow!.......2001-01-04
I admit, I might be getting too critical when it comes to mystery novels lately. But I have read so many that I start to know what a really good mystery novel is and which ones are not. "Zero At The Bone" was the first novel that I have read by Mrs. Walker. Don't get me wrong, the book wasn't bad at all, but the plot moved quite slowly and there was not much suspense. Most of the novel described in great detail the tasks and obligations that a zookeeper must go through. How to clean the cage, sweep the floor, feed the animals, take the snake out of his cage, and on and on. If you work at a zoo, you'll love this book I guarantee it! Although, the characters were well developed and likeable, I wouldn't put this book on my "must read list" at all. Not bad Mrs. Walker!

Suspenseful.......2000-01-08
I really enjoyed Zero at the Bone. You never knew where the plot turns were going to take you. It is rare to find a mystery novel that leaves you guessing until the end. I found it a great read along with Mary Willis Walker's other books. I just wish she would write another one soon.
Book Description
Robert Eversz's edgy and endearing heroine Nina Zero is back...and this time she's embroiled in her most dangerous case ever -- investigating L.A.'s underground S&M scene while getting caught up in sex, lies, and babysitting.
It's opening night of Nina Zero's first gallery show, and her staged photographs of Hollywood pulp scenes are attracting the interest of actual art connoisseurs, not just the usual gossip rag readership. But the excitement of the evening shifts to alarm when Nina receives an anonymous package containing an amateur bondage video that may have ended in death. As she and her editor at Scandal Times watch the rape and strangling of a young woman, Nina Zero recognizes a distinctive tattoo on the woman's right shoulder, and suddenly realizes why one of her models has missed the opening.
Who sent the tape? And more important, what happened to the woman? Nina starts investigating her model and discovers a parallel life of S&M phone sex, blogs written in code, an illicit relationship with a celebrity hypnotherapist, and ties to the son of a billionaire film director. Her Scandal Times coverage of the case enrages the LAPD and attracts death threats from anonymous sources. Luckily, Nina has her trusted (but toothless) Rottweiler by her side, as well as a sexy but mysterious detective who keeps landing in her bed. Just when events begin to spin from her control, Nina's deeply dysfunctional family enters the fray, making life even more complicated for this ex-con with a soft heart and a chip on her shoulder.
Set in a vividly sunny and sinister Los Angeles, Zero to the Bone is the best (and sexiest) Nina Zero novel yet.

LA Gothic!.......2006-04-18
Nina Zero is an artist-excon whose violent child hood has turned her into a woman who uses violence to solve her problems. The lack of impulse control seems hereditary as her father and her niece's lack of foresight plummet her into as much trouble as her own ill-considered decisions. While Nina serves the cause of truth in her role as a scandal rag photographer, she is unscrupulous in her methods.
Despite this Nina is a sympathetic character who one wishes would stay out of trouble. Unfortunately her proclivity for unprotected sex and assaulting people with weapons makes her prone to trouble.
The backdrop for Nina's escapades is the art scene and porn industry in Los Angeles. Eversz prose is superior; but he gets a little flamboyant in plot creation.
Go find this author now!.......2006-03-28
I read a review of this book in some publication, and as it sounded like the sort of thing I might like I requested it from my local library. While I waited for it to become available, I pulled out a different Nina Zero novel (Burning Garbo) and read that. I realized that I liked the author's writing so much that I went back to the beginning, found all of the Nina Zero novels and read the series start to finish (Zero to the Bone being the latest.) They were all well worth a read.
If you like mystery/crime fiction with strong female protagonists you will like Nina. Her life as a kid was a very tough one. It has not gotten easier as an adult. She is a papparaza who repeatedly finds herself embroiled in various crimes and misdemeanors as part of her job. That's all I'll give away. You need to read it yourself. She is an engaging character and I consider Eversz a very fine discovery, indeed. I'll be anxiously awaiting his next Nina Zero book.
"I tracked people for a living, if celebrities can be called people and photographing them a living." .......2006-03-07
"Zero to the Bone" was my introduction to Mary Alice Baker a.k.a. Nina Zero, the savvy, sexy, complex protagonist of author Robert Eversz's mystery series, ("Shooting Elvis," Digging James Dean"). Ms Zero, in this her fifth outing, is a paparazzi for LA's ignominious tabloid, The Scandal Times, and an ex-con out on parole. She solves murder cases as a hobby. Unfortunately, as with many series novels, there are numerous references to the protagonist's past. In "Zero to the Bone," the author alludes to so many incidents in Nina's earlier life, from prior works, that even though he includes some background information, I really felt left out - like I should go back and read books one through four to thoroughly understand the heroine and this particular plot. I enjoyed Nina as a character, (we bonded), but not the storyline. However, Mr. Eversz has my attention and I am now curious enough to read more Nina novels, but that's not the point...right? "Zero to the Bones" should stand alone, unless the reader is informed otherwise. I do not think it fulfills its promise.
Our story opens with Nina's debut as an artiste. She obviously has talent and is showing her very original photographs at the upscale Leonora Price Gallery in Santa Monica. The photos are "staged tableaux carefully composed to look culled from the pages of the National Enquirer" - in other words, arty Hollywood pulp! Her two main models, blonde, wholesome looking Christine, and Nephthys, a kind of "punk Barbara Stanwyck type," are scheduled to accompany her to the opening, along with her trusty bodyguard The Rott, a toothless but formidable Rottweiler, and teenage niece Cassie. A plus - the crowd likes the work. Even her parole officer appreciates it. A few sales are made, and a potential romance surfaces in the form of handsome Sean Tyler. Frank, her cohort and editor-in-chief at the Scandal rag introduces them. THE minus - Christine, a friend as well as Nina's model, is a no show...and she promised to attend this important event.
The evening turns into a nightmare when Nina receives an unmarked DVD which turns out to be a snuff film. Christine is the victim, definitely identifiable by the unique Betty Boop tattoo on her shoulder. Shortly afterward, the model's body turns up in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Parole rules forbid sleuthing. They also prohibit Nina's burgeoning association with hunky Sean, who turns out to be a LAPD detective. But rules have never stood in our girl's way and she is determined to find out who murdered her friend. Her investigation takes her to Hollywood's seamiest areas to question the scum who dwell there.
Along with the mystery and associated complications, Nina's abusive father surfaces and details about her dysfunctional family emerge. "His beatings taught me discipline, how to walk quietly and be silent, how to tune into the moods of your opponent and hit him before he hits you or run before he strikes. Above all, he taught me how to watch. I'm a photographer because of him, because of my fear of him."
I was interested in Nina and various other characters to keep reading until the end - not a bad experience. I do get the feel that if I study up on her past through the earlier books in the series, I will appreciate this one more. So, if you are a Nina Zero fan already, you will probably enjoy "Zero To The Bone." If you haven't met her yet, try book number one first!

dark gritty urban noir thriller .......2006-02-25
Ex-con Nina Zero a freelance photographer for the tabloid newspaper the Scandal Times, is realizing a dream by having a showing of her photographs in a respectable gallery. The model she used in the photographs never shows up but Nina thinks Christine is just going to be fashionably late. A CD sent to the newspaper that she never viewed turns out to be a snuff film and her co-worker Frank who watched it brings it to the showing for Nina to see.
The woman who was killed has a tattoo of Betty Boop on her left shoulder just like the Christine has. A hiker stumbles over Christine's body in the Santa Monica Mountains. Both Nina and Frank decide to follow the story. Nina because she cares and would like to find the killer and Frank because he thinks he can gain much mileage from the murder which has all the ingredients for a sensational story including the darkest side of S&M, where one is almost to the point of death. From the dark world that Christine inhabited and enjoyed, the investigation takes them to the corridors of the Hollywood elite where everyone has a price except for Nina.
Robert Eversz is a dark gritty urban noir thriller writer who imbues his characters with the full spectrum of human emotions and reflects that back to the reader who sees them in a disturbing light. The author brings every emotion out of the audience from joy to sorrow and everything in between. Yet this stark novel has its light moments involving Nina's dog Rott and its moving moments (Nina's father trying to reconnect with her). ZERO TO THE BONE is in a class by itself.

Book Description
Anita is missing. Any minute now, Cray expects his sister to walk through the door and make everything all right. But no one knows where Anita is, not her parents, not her boyfriend, not even the police. As the hours stretch into days, Cray's hope fades into fear and the realization that Anita may never come home. Taut, tense, and tightly plotted, this intimate portrayal of a contemporary nightmare is much more frightening than a generic horror tale. -- Booklist, starred review Michael Cadnum is the author of several young adult novels including Taking It (Viking and Puffin) and Edge, his latest novel from Viking. He lives in Albany, California.

Tami's Review.......2002-12-08
Setting- Oakland, California neighborhood
Main Characters- Cray, brother of the missing girl, Anita; Mom-bone researcher; Dad-lumber business owner, Kyle- Anita's boyfriend; Detective Waterman.
Plot summary- Anita, Cray's sister, goes to work and doesn't come home. Cray tells of the day his sister turned missing and the days following as he struggles with trying to deal with it. He goes through the stages of denial, numbness, anger, into grief. He searches his sister's diary for clues. He hopes that she just ran away from home and is angry that she did that. He tells of how his future desires change and life because more precious, relationships deeper. His parents choose different ways to deal with their loss and the culminating scene is one in which they bring her dental records to determine if a murdered girl is Anita. It isn't, but the reality sinks in.
Author evaluation- The thoughts and actions are extremely realistic. Characterization is strong and so is the emotional progression. Extremely helpful information to develop empathy. A short read but excellently written.
Audience- Since the main character is at least 16 years old, it is recommended for 10th grade and up. Younger, but mature readers would enjoy it too. There is not much action so it is not recommended for those who like action/adventure.
