5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-09-09

My infant loves this book. She loves every story in it. Some are really easy; some are a little harder. It gives a parent the opportunity to challenge their child. If they want to be read to, read a hard one, if they don't really care, read an easy, fun one. It's a great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Suess for Everyone.......2007-08-13

My husband and I picked this anthology up at Sam's Club (for a really good price, but I only saw it there that one time) about a year or so ago and we have not regretted it. Our children enjoy hearing these stories over and over.

The "Sleep Book" included in this book is one of my new favorites. It really helps my children (ages 2 and a half and 11 months) settle down for bed.

I agree that it is not really a book that young children can hold because it is too heavy, but I can manage pretty well holding it while reading to my young children. My children love looking at the pictures and listening to the words with the "magical rhythms". Sometimes they play as I read and come over occasionally to view the illustrations.

This is a very good book. My children love it and I love it too!

5 out of 5 stars can't beat it.......2007-07-31

It is awesome because it has so many awesome books for such an awsome price my daughter loves it. Must own

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-07-22

This is what a compilation should be; it's stuffed with "greatest hits" and extra information. It's fulfilling on its own but left me wanting to explore further. It can be enjoyed in nuggets or read in long sittings. On top of all other merits, it's reasonably priced, especially for such a sturdy and handsomely bound volume. I disagree with other reviewers that it's too bulky--as a child that's what I loved about Dr. Suess books the most--they were huge to my small hands. I felt like I was reading a "big people" book even though they were simple enough for a beginning reader to enjoy. A purist will be dismayed that the layout of the original pages of the individual books has been changed in some cases, but all the artwork is represented so it's a minor quibble (in contrast to many volumes of "Alice In Wonderland" or the Narnia books where pages of illustrations are missing).

The quality of the content is unquestionable--time hasn't diminished these works in the slightest; the messages underneath the simple, quirky, weird rhymes/imagery are more relevant today than ever, and just as captivating. The biographical sections and essays are informative but brief, they don't interrupt the fun.

If you are a fan or, like me, someone who has been away from "Suess-land" far too long, and don't already possess the works in this collection, don't hesitate to pick up a copy today, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Suess for Adults.......2007-07-09

I originally bought this as a present for my sister-in-law's baby shower, but once I received the book, I had to keep it. If you loved Dr. Suess as a kid this is a book for you. Filled with the original stories and images, it also offers some short stories written by Suess, essays written about the man, and pictures. I wouldn't suggest it for young children, but it is a great addition to your bookcase!

5 out of 5 stars Barron Test Preparation.......2007-10-12

I have prepared students for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and have used Barron preparation all the way back to the 1980s. I use various other manuals and software, but my students tell me that the Barron is the quality preparation they need. It is more difficult than many of the resources and better enables them to score well. There is abundant testing material, answers well explained, the built-in flash cards, dictionary of vocabulary likely seen on the actual test, and available useer friendly software with imediate feedback. In other words, the Barron has it all. I always know that when my students treat this manual as another text book, completing everything offered, their expectations will be fulfilled. My students tell me they know they have had the material that is more difficult than that of the actualtests which gives them a sense of being well prepared in the testing environment.

It has a very extensive vocabulary list with almost every SAT word possible! (I would say about 99% of all words are listed). They also provide sentences with word which helps tremendously in understanding the word in context. I would highly recommend this book if you need to improve your vocabulary.

Book Description

What do children hope to create when they put pencil to paper? An accurate likeness of the things they see, of course. With this imaginative, informative, and amply-illustrated guide to drawing, it's amazingly easy for kids to make those art dreams come true. After a brief overview of tools and materials, the entertaining hands-on activities begin with contour drawing techniques. With the help of lots of exercises, budding artists will learn the basic elements of shapes (lines, dots, circles) and see how to combine them to make familiar forms. They'll find out how to produce the illusion of volume with shading techniques; create perspective; accurately recreate landscapes, people, animals, and nature; develop interesting compositions; and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent beginning book!.......2007-07-30

This book is excellent for the beginning art teacher and drawing student. I am basing a lot of my curriculum on ideas inspired by this book in my upcoming school year. It takes your thoroughly through each step/stage of learning to draw so that anyone can master it! Great illustrations and ideas are perfectly fit onto each page, without annoying "materpieces" that you don't think possible. By the end, you will be drawing with the best of them-- and students will too!

4 out of 5 stars A good start for teenagers.......2007-03-14

The book has enough explanations for those children that want to learn basics of drawing on themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Drawing Book.......2007-01-17

I purchased this for my 10 year old granddaughter. She loves it. She says it has all different subjects to draw and gives step by step how to.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-01-12

I teach art classes and was thrilled with this book. It is well written and will have a special place in my library. I refer to it weekly.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but for child serious about drawing.......2007-01-12

I got this book at the library for my 10 year old daughter to see if she would like if before purchasing it. She is talented and comes from artists on her father's side, but had a bad experience with her first Art teacher in a school setting. I was looking for something to spark her confidence and keep her interest high in at least independant and self explorative instruction for now.

She loved the book immediately. Because she had some formal class instruction this year she was able to recognize some of the exercises that she was required to do in class, so that background exposure helped her "get" this book right away. This is a great fundementals darwing book for kids, but it is an exersice with a you can do it attitude book which is what I wanted for my daughter at this time. Something she could read for herself, interpret for herself and try her own way and see what she gets without someone else trying to shape her ideas for her.

The book's attractively layed out for my 10 year old, but I think she will work with this slowly here and there at her own pace, and probably come back to it even more when she's older too. there are some drawing projects but they are not as extensive as the fundimental practices area.

For this reason I also bought her Lee Hammond's series on drawing life like animals for more go right to it and start drawing projects. She is spending more time with that now and I expect as she gets more and more into drawing she'll come back and forth to the therory and the practical fun stuff.

For a child who just wants to draw cool looking picts fast, you might be better off with the lee Ames draw 50 series. My 8 year old son loves these draw or trace books as what he produces looks great with no theory just draw.

Story Behind the Book

“My teenage daughter really needs to hear this!” Such was the typical reaction from countless men and women who read Shaunti Feldhahn ’s bestselling For Women Only. “If forty-year-old women are surprised by the truth about how men think, we realized the value in helping teenagers discover these realities as well,” says Shaunti. Teaming with her best friend Lisa Rice , a mother of teen girls and the coauthor of For Women Only Discussion Guide, they launched a major national survey of guys fifteen to twenty. Their surprising findings are revealed here to help girls improve their relationships with the opposite sex, now and into the future.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-06

I love it. Another bestseller that I recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You

5 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC book!!! I loved it!.......2007-07-28

This book was wonderful. I love how it gave so many personal quotes from real guys and what they had to say was amazing. I already knew most of the things that they talked about before I read the book but the book really added a depth of understanding that I hadn't had before. I realized alot of things that I could do and say to even my younger brothers. It made me feel almost sorry for the guy and what he goes through and how we as girls so many of us just ignore or disregard the guys feelings cause we think they are weak when sometimes we are the actual cause of it. I felt alot more self-concious about the way I dress and acted around guys. I was at soccer camp just yesterday when I a girl there had her belly and most of her chest showing in a tight tank top and this guy came up to her and asked her if she had a shirt she could put on, she told him yes and he said good and walked away. Just that made me realized how much temptation we are to guys. That guy was trying to keep his mind out of the gutter. This book also had a great Christian perspective into it which I loved being a christian myself.
I highly recommend this to ALL teenage girls.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye-Opening Look into a Hidden World.......2007-06-14

To most teenage girls, guys are a mystery, and confusion haunts most inter-gender relationships. Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa A. Rice do their best to eliminate this confusion with For Young Women Only: What You Need to Know About How Guys Think. The essence of the male mind becomes much clearer to the reader, enabling her to be the kind of friend and sister in Christ that the young men around her need, and preparing her to be a loving, supportive wife. The age-old topic of modesty is covered with new insight, revealing to girls WHY modesty is so important if we care about the men around us. The chapter "Seeing the Inner and Outer Beauty" was perhaps the most important chapter to me, as a teenage reader, because it covers a matter of great sensitivity to young women in a manner that provides comfort and encouragement. I would recommend For Young Women Only to all girls ages 13 and older, as the book does contain some sensitive content. For more on sexual purity and modesty, check out Wait For Me: Rediscovering the Joy of Purity in Romance, a book targeted toward a similar audience with a message equally as important and necessary as that of For Young Women Only.

5 out of 5 stars Must read!.......2007-05-21

This book is so valuable for young women, and even some that aren't so young. The principles taught in this book can really help a woman throughout her dating life. It even has some great tips for women who may be married or already in a committed relationship. I highly suggest picking this one up for yourself, or maybe for the young woman in your life.

Book Description

Ruth Heller's prose and pictures are the perfect means for discovering the variety of oviparous animals and their unique ways of laying eggs.

"A highly original book, on the improbable subject of eggs...Simple enough for three-year-olds, and complex enough for those considerably older." --The New Yorker

"Bold, bright illustrations complement the informative text...A touch of humor and rhyme leave youngsters with a wealth of information--and an impressive new vocabulary word." --The Mailbox

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Eggs Over Easy or Walking on Egg shells.......2007-05-31

Egg lovers, egg heads will especially enjoy this book by Ruth Heller a beautiful story. Oviperous you are, if you slithered or crawled or burst from your shell. Lots of children certainly love the expressions eggs generate. Crack open that shell and enjoy this play on the question, "Which came first the chicken or the egg?" Egg-xactly.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth Heller and husband in two completely different times in my life, in a bookstore in Carmel and on another rainy day in a bookstore in Ventura,CA. Both times I had her books, didn't know she was there, coincidental encounters, so I could and did get autographs. My girls loved her Designs for Coloring: Birds (Designs for Coloring), hint, hint parents. She was so tiny...and obviously a lovely person to get to say to, "I'm a teacher that always wanted to thank you for...."

Right now my first graders are reading about chicks, ducks and other egg tales. So showing the Reading Rainbow that contains this book being featured and read aloud is perfect. Heller's book is read by Georgia Engles with her interesting lilt it makes the poetic text very nice for them. It's still a bit hard to read for a few but I do have a set left over from days I taught not from canned scripts but from content connected literature. A few pieces of this text I'll quote hoping to get the sound which is so gentle and lovely, " Chickens lay the eggs you buy......Chickens aren't the only ones. Every bird wild or tame does the same. The ostrich lays the largest egg, the hummingbird the smallest. .."
As you read her lovely drawings bring you the text illustrated very factually and wonderful rendered. I always see those psychedelic 60 rock posters. I don't know why, it just happens in my head. I always enjoy teaching with Heller books. You go on to be introduced to reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects..."mermaid's purses", seahorses...moon snails, lots of ways to appreciate the egg layers.

If you enjoy video showing the Reading Rainbow: Farm Life with this is a great idea because you'll go to the farm to see a chick break out of the egg, watch loggerhead turtles be laid and hatched and see some great facts about egg layers. I can't imagine Ruth Heller's book out of the context of this tape because it expands the constructs so beautifully.

And if you love this "Animals Born Alive and Well (Picture Books) " is another great one from the author.

5 out of 5 stars Chick chick.......2007-02-02

A great book that talks about other animals that lay eggs other than chickens. I read this book to my preschool children and they loved it very much. The pictures are bright and very colourful. It's a must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Informative book about animal/mammal/insect eggs........2006-09-29

I enjoy the realistic non-anthropomorphic pictures Ruth Heller, author/illustrator, placed on each page. They are colorful, accurate and fun to look at. Some pages have just one animal and other pages are filled with lively looking insects and their eggs. I also enjoyed how she showed the size, coloring, shape and form difference between all types of eggs. I learned a lot from this book and think that kids over 3 will enjoy having this read to them. The only downfall I see in this story is that sometimes the words and sentences are in rhyming form and sometimes they aren't. I would've preferred one OR the other, not both. It doesn't flow as well with the two methods of writ, but other than that it was a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, from one generation to the next.......2006-01-13

This was my favorite book growing up, because of it's catchy rhyming story, accompanied by colorful, ecclectic illustrations... and now, it is my sons favorite book - so much so, that I'm now looking into buying Ruth Heller's other science books. My 4 year old loves them, and the colorful picutres hold my 2 year olds attention (a feat in itself) so well, I'm amazed!

I'm so glad I've kept this book around long enough to pass it on to my son, who already has a great understanding of any animal, who is an "Oviparous"

4 out of 5 stars I admire this book........2006-01-05

I think it's really great that Ruth Heller introduces a complex subject in a children's book without talking down to the children. It's great that she uses "big" words like "oviparous"--kids, after all, can remember lengthy dinosaur names; there's no reason why they can't handle other long scientific words.
But I do have slight qualms. For instance, the part about amphibians says that amphibians don't have claws--what about African clawed frogs?
The illustrations are engaging, and the use of rhyme in prose makes the text flow nicely. The subject is interesting, too. I just wonder a bit about the accuracy of the "facts" presented here.

    Book Description

Reed Brennan's future is looking as bright as the two-karat diamonds in her new housemates' ears. Being accepted to the most prestigious private boarding school in the country wasn't enough for Reed. She had to break every rule to do it, but she has accomplished the impossible:

Reed is a Billings Girl now.

And with her new status come respect, envy, and, most important, opportunity. Not to mention the parties. Unfortunately, at the next illicit party in the Easton campus woods, her roommate snaps some pictures of Reed in more than one compromising position. She uses the photos to blackmail Reed: Dig up dirt on the most powerful and popular Billings Girls or she will have Reed expelled.

And speaking of parties, the Legacy is coming up. It's the invitation-only Halloween party in NYC and it's rumored that Thomas -- Reed's MIA boyfriend -- will be making an appearance there. Too bad Reed isn't even close to invited.

Life as a Billings Girl is every bit as glamorous as Reed imagined. What she didn't bargain for is the tangled web of private lies these girls weave.

This was an excellent book. I loved it so much... somehow I can understand what Reed is going through. I liked how there are new characters, and how the abrupt ending leaves me wanting more. I can't wait to read Untouchable!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing for High School Students.......2007-05-25

I read this book for my eight grade reading class. It was an easy read and also very easy to talk about with your teacher and friends. Everytime i would pick up this book i couldn't even put the book down. Every Chapter it got better and better. It talkes about real life experences from being under pressur to making the right choose about friends. I never wanted to finish the book. I was able to picture myself in this book. Looking forward to reading the rest of these series.

INVITATION ONLY, the second novel in the PRIVATE series, begins where we left off in the first book (Private (Private, Book 1)). Thomas went missing, one of the Billings Girls was expelled, and Reed Brennan finally moved into the dorm she had her eye on when she first came to the private school. But even though Reed was in the Billings house, that didn't exactly mean she was in the clique.

Turns out, the Billings Girls had a little hazing present for Reed that would keep her busy. That's right--Reed has to actually do the girls' beds every morning and clean up the dorm. Who knows exactly how long that will last.

But that's not the only thing on Reed's mind. Her boyfriend, Thomas Pearce, had just went missing during parents' weekend. And the only possible way that she would be able to see him again is at a social event called the Legacy, held in New York City that apparently Thomas is for sure making an appearance at. The only problem is that Reed has no idea what the Legacy is--but all she is worried about is getting there. Oh, and her new roommate took compromising photos of Reed and a certain someone, and is now using it to blackmail Reed.

From finding her boyfriend to overcoming her blackmailer to trying to officially become a Billings Girl, Reed has too much on her plate.

It seemed like it would be hard for Kate Brian to top the first book in the PRIVATE series, which was absolutely amazing, but no worries since she does not disappoint. INVITATION ONLY was even better than the first. With even more obstacles that Reed has to face, the story literally leaves the reader at the edge of their seats. And Kate Brian ends the story with another huge cliffhanger. This series definitely tops all the other series out there.

I'm a huge Kate Brian fan and I have to say I wasn't let down by this second in the Private series.
It's filled with black mailing, drama and an ending you just wont believe!
I seriously cannot wait until the next book comes out!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-11-05

This was a very good book, it was funny and i couldn't put the book down. Everybody in the book is crazy except Reed and Josh. They seem to be the only normal people in the book. The book did get me mad when Thomas died. I was looking forward to Thomas and Reed in the second book. Maybe he will magical appear in the third.I highly doubt it though.

Subtitled A Book for Obsolete Children, this unusual item in the Seuss canon doesn't really belong among the children's books. Written to celebrate the nonsense master's 82nd birthday, it follows "you" (an elderly gent in a suit and white moustache) through a physical check-up in some fiendish geriatric clinic. You are measured, prodded, and subjected to all the medical indignities familiar and unfamiliar to the elderly. "You must see Dr. Pollen, our Allergy Whiz, who knows every sniffle and itch that there is... He will check your reactions to thumbtacks and glue, catcher's mitts, leaf mould, and cardigans too. Nasturtiums and marble cake, white and blue chalks, anthracite coal and the feathers of hawks." It's clear that the process is going to be long, but much shorter than the bill. The blurb on the back says it all: "Is this a children's book? Well... not immediately. You buy a copy for your child now and you give it to him on his 70th birthday." Actually, it would make an amusing gift for anyone over 40. --Richard Farr

    Book Description

A green nose. How silly, thought Punchinello. It wouldn't make him faster, stronger, or even smarter. It would only make him greener--and make him look just like all the other Wemmicks! Why would he want that when he knows Eli made each of them different for a reason?

But when Punchinello stops visiting Eli regularly, a painted nose somehow doesn't seem as foolish anymore. Now more than ever, Punchinello needs to hear his maker say, "I'll always help you be who I made you to be."

Just like Punchinello, we all want to fit in. To be accepted by the crowd. But at times that may mean we either have to look and act like others--or risk being rejected.

Punchinello's hard-earned lesson shows us how important it is to be who we were created to be, and why that matters. So let this wonderful tale help you remember two things: that you were made unique for a reason, and that there is one who will always help you be you--wonderfully you.

5 out of 5 stars Our favorite book! .......2007-09-22

My son and I have been reading this book together for years and love it. It is such a wonderful and true story. A must read for every child and parent.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-25

Punchinello sees other wemmicks with green noses. First he finds it silly. Then he and his friends get laughed at for not having green noses. So they get their noses painted. Soon the next color in style is red and then eventually purple is the last. They go through many nose paintings in order to be "in".

There is humor in the book too. When the wemmicks get their noses painted, they stick their noses in the air and walk like they are all that.

Punchinello soon decides he wants to be himself again. He gets tired of trying to follow the crowd to fit in.

This book is good not only for children, but for teenagers, and even adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars An enchanting story with a lesson for all ages!.......2007-05-11

If Only I Had a Green Nose is another sequel in the series of Wemmicks. In this story Punchinello struggles with fads and peer pressure. Willy Withit is the Wemmick who knows what's cool, be it tall shoes, square hats or green noses. Punch and his friends fall victim. They want to be like everyone else! They want to fit in, and if painting their noses green (or yellow or purple or blue) will help, they'll do it. Soon they realize being "with it" requires constant and quick changes. Meeting the demands of those fads doesn't make them happier, either. Eli, their maker, reminds them: "I made you different on purpose." Punch and his friends decide it is best to be just the way they were made to be. In their case it takes some sandpaper to make them themselves again. It's not always easy to be yourself, but Eli assures them: "I'll always help you be who I made you to be."

Written by best-selling author Max Lucado the style is personal and touching. The illustrations by Sergio Martinez are sun-kissed; slightly sketchy, but filled with detail. Together they create a wonderful new world to teach children about God's love.

What I Like: I love the Wemmick books! They are enchanting while teaching valuable lessons. This one is particularly good for children struggling with image or peer pressure. While written for kids, this book offers a lesson for adults as well. The illustrations are fantastic.

What I Dislike: Nothing. This isn't my favorite of the Wemmicks series, but it is still an absolute delight with a timeless story.

    Overall Rating: Very Good!

Tanya -- Christian Children's Book Review

1 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2005-03-16

I found this book to be the literary equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. It's overtly didactic and singularly uninspired. Published in 2002, and it already seems dated. The illustrations are likewise nothing to get excited about. Nothing fresh or exciting here either, but the illustrator thinks enough of his own work that every page of the book has his signature in it--having his name on the cover wasn't enough, evidently.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2003-07-01

I was just read this book recently at a teenage christian leadership camp. This book has a great message about how God loves us all even if we don't follow the newest trends and how trends can suck us all in. However, something many of us teenagers noticed was the great sexual reference. Of course, small kids probably wouldn't notice it, but older kids would be falling over in their seats in tears unable to continue reading this book.

    Book Description

Any child who can make a stick figure can learn to create funny cartoons--and this enjoyably illustrated guide tells them exactly how. Written by professional cartoonist Art Roche, it gives kids lots of hands-on opportunities to turn their creative ideas into delightfully drawn reality. The emphasis is on doing original illustrations and developing a personal vision, rather than tracing or copying someone else's style; after all, cartooning is a free and fun form, so there's no "wrong" way to draw one. Roche also includes plenty of information that other children's how-to books overlook, including advice on writing jokes, composing panels, and getting published. In short, it addresses every step of the process, from buying a pencil to seeing the cartoons in print.

This is unlike any other cartooning book past or present. Too many cooks of this genre show you the standard "draw an oval and a triangle and now you have a duck!" or "draw like I do!" instructions. Art Roche's book teaches kids to think, to imagine, to be funny. Art gives readers the tools to pursue their styles, not his. It's an easy read, full of great illustrations, and humorous examples. Art Roche makes anyone from from 4 to 84 want to pick up a pencil and have fun! Great gift for any kid or kid at heart.

My 12-year-old picked up this book and devoured it in one sitting, reporting it helped him conquer some of the problems he had encountered as a recreational cartoonist. He especially enjoyed the section devoted to writing.

This is a gorgeous book - hardcover with color on every page. Great art, lively text, and very inspiring - it works as both a "how-to" and personal cartooning cheerleader.

5 out of 5 stars Art Roche: God of Cartooning and Rock & Roll.......2005-05-12

You want to draw cartoons? Why wait? Start learning the important fundamentals from one of the best in the biz. A giant among pygmies -- that's Just the Way It Is (and Bruce Hornsby agrees with me, so there!)
Why spend more money learning some OTHER system that will only result in your work looking like everybody elses? Do you really think someone is going to pay you to draw so-so copies of Japanese Anime? Get real, Get this book, shmucko. With a little effort (we remember effort, right?) and dedication, the sky's the limit.
Do the right thing and start tuning in to what makes you unique -- after all, we can SELL that!!! Roche is the Real Thing, and his work speaks volumes. Your eyes don't lie to you, and neither will Mr. Roche.
