In 1946, with World War II finally over, major league baseball returned full force. In When the Boys Came Back, Frederick Turner follows the events of the season, beginning with spring training and ending with the World Series match-up that saw the St. Louis Cardinals top the Boston Red Sox in seven games after Enos Slaughter's famed "mad dash" from first to home. The book tells not only of the triumphant return from the armed forces to baseball by great players including Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, but also of the less-than-successful attempts to play ball again by former stars like Cecil Travis, who returned from the war with an injury he couldn't overcome.

a sweet-swinging thematic review of b'ball in '46.......1998-07-26
Although Mr. Turner can become excessively involved in the day-to-day minutiae of the 1946 baseball season, he does a most credible and entertaining job of not only describing what the national pasttime was like a half-century ago, he fully develops three central themes essential to an understanding of the evolution of baseball since 1946. I found his treatment of African-Americans in the sport, the nascent development of a players' union, and the import of the Mexican League to be excellent. The greatest strength of his book, however, are the vignettes of players whose lives were changed, some positively, others cruelly by their war experiences. These men, especially those who did "not make it," were crafted with great poignancy. I love baseball and found myself compelled by this volume.
Book Description
In text and stunning period photographes, Dan Valenti explores baseball's spring training ritual in the era before superstar salaries, endorsement deals, and ballparks named after corporations -- focusing on the Boston Red Sox.
Book Description
Before the purpose-pitch that zips inches from the batter's head, before greenfly autograph-seekers stalk hotel lobbies, before thousands of fans stand up and boo in 50,000-seat stadiums, before the proverbial dog days of summer and the pressure-packed moments of October . . . there is sweet spring. The long hello. Baseball's early season.
The words spring training have long held special power over baseball fans. They signal the arrival of fresh air and sunshine after a long winter devoid of bare feet and box scores. The chance to see the game up close and personal, in beautiful slow motion. No other sport undergoes this slow, glorious unfolding. And no other book captures baseball's rite of passage in all its magic.
Come on a wild ride through spring training's many attractions and peculiarities, from Florida to Arizona, the National to the American League, the dugouts to Section D. Glimpse retirees in Hawaiian shirts singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," million-dollar players taking it easy on the field and in the bars, young rookies flashing their skills, grizzled vets going through the motions, wide-eyed children dressed from head to toe in their favorite team's garb.
It's all here, from Alligator Alley to Cactus Way, sit-ups to sunblock, home runs to hangovers -- a lively tribute to America's favorite pastime in its purest, most wonderful form.

A Baseball Reader.......2004-06-05
It is unfortunate that Shaughnessy did not contribute more text to this collaboration with Grossfeld. By virtue of the photos alone, the book makes a decent coffee table book, but more history related to the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, their histories and ballparks would have made the book more worthwhile. It would be nice to see a book devoted to the history of the two leagues and to the ballparks, fans and players that have participated in spring training through the years.
I echo another reviewer's sentiment that some of the photographs seemed to be included simply because they accented the female form (from a variety of angles), rather than for their relevance to spring training baseball. While I was not offended by these photos, from a baseball fan's point of view they did not strengthen my reading experience.
Spring Training by Dan Shanghnessy and Grossfeld.......2003-09-19
This book would make a fine reference for a class project
on baseball. Attractions from Florida to Arizona depict
young rookies demonstrating their considerable skills. There
is an excellent introduction called "Renewal in Spring Training"
by the legendary Cal Ripkind. Cal explains how the busy spring
season brings together players with a job to do and rosters
to write. The author explains that a visit to teams in spring
training provides the best opportunity to view players in
close proximity. This work is perfect for baseball enthusiasts.
Not appropriate for children.......2003-03-08
I bought this book for my son and was quite surprised to discover that some of the pictures were inappropriate for an eleven-year old. I'm hardly a prude but I can't understand why a book on this topic would include sexist, suggestive photographs of female fans. I try to teach my son not to view women as sex objects but a handful of pictures in this book have little to do with baseball or spring training and do just that. Shame on the authors, who should know better.
Spring Training, the glory days of today.......2003-02-04
From the minute you open the book, you are not bombarded with a bunch of "pretty pictures," but are brought into a breathtaking and exciting world that we know as baseball. Shaughnessy and Grossfeld show us that baseball is not only about the Red Sox, but it is about the game itself, something that shocked me at first, but then prevented me from putting the book down. The amalgamation of Shaughnessy's writing and the captivating pictures that Grossfeld added make the book amazing. Why spend the money to go to spring training, when you can just pick up the book, and go there for free?
Short and Sweet.......2003-01-29
This is the kind of book a woman like my wife buys for a guy like me because I like baseball so she thought I'd like it. It's okay, full of pretty pictures that [take up] a couple of hours, but there's not much too it. I'd rather be at spring training than read about it. I also think she thought that since it was by Shaughnessy the book would be about the Red Sox, but it's not. Oh well.

Great spring training gudie book.......2007-02-12
I am a Florida resident, who absolutely loves spring training. Every spring I load up the car on the weekends and heads all over the state to different parks. I have recently gotten into the autograph act, so now when I go to the games I am seeking autographs as well. The book is very informative and from what I can tell quite accurate in its description of the parks, food, and autograph opportunities. If you are thinking of heading to spring training for the 1st, 2nd or even if you are a seasoned spring training vet, this book is definitely worth the price. It even includes some sample week long itineraries.

A great book if you're going to spring training and plan on spending time at multiple different ballparks. It's interesting to read the history of spring training for each team and the parks.
Pitchers and Catchers Reporting Soon!.......2005-01-25
Great details about the spring training parks and towns. Packed with photos and info for visiting tourists.

SYNOPSIS
Though it has changed some in recent years, spring training continues to be a time of renewal for baseball. Teams and fans, many from the snowy climes of the North, descend on Florida and Arizona to begin preparing for what they are sure will be a trip to the World Series. With the pace of the game a little slower, fans close to the action, and players more accessible, the sport seems to return to its roots for a brief, idyllic time.
Based on the author's visits to each of the 26 current spring training ballparks-17 in Florida and 9 in Arizona-this reference work first provides a detailed description of the ballpark as it currently exists, plus information on its history. Next comes the spring training history of the resident major league team (or teams, for the four parks that are shared), along with information about noteworthy spring training sites that were, or still are, located near the existing ballpark. Information on the area surrounding the ballpark completes the entry, focusing on other baseball and sports-related attractions in the area. An appendix provides a full listing of every major league team's spring training sites since 1914. Heavily illustrated.
I've Got Spring Fever!.......2004-12-17
I bought this book as a Christmas present for my son and it has turned out to be an early Christmas present for me. I've spent the last few nights reading about the diverse and fascinating ballparks of baseball's spring training season. I'm not sure if we'll finally make it to Florida or Arizona this March (I swear we're going to one of these years) but I almost feel as if I've already been there after reading some of these chapters. I've learned so much about the origins of the spring game and about how it has evolved. I now know that the Grapefruit League got its name, for example, when Casey Stengel tried to catch a grapefruit dropped from an airplane in Daytona Beach one year and it splattered all over him. I've also learned about the parks present and past that have made baseball in Arizona and Florida unique. I can't wait to visit some of these parks and to make use of the tips the authors offers for spring travelors. How many days until pitchers and catchers report?

A hardcore fan's guide.......2005-11-27
If you're looking for a book about the rich history of the Grapefruit League, keep moving. This book is a straightforward how-to of gameday. I've been to six of the parks in Florida already and the book's information was very accurate. This makes me feel better about this upcoming spring when I get to visit some different parks. If you want to maximze your gameday experience, this is the book for you. Info on seating, parking, directions, traffic, food, programs, and the ever-important autograph tips make for a great book. Also includes 5 one week vacation itineraries to help you plan a vacation. If you want to make the most of your time at a Grapefruit game, this is the guide for you!
Essential and practical advice.......2005-04-12
This book is a total success in fulfilling its remit, that as a practical guide to touring the various venues of the Grapefruit League in Florida. The advice is uncomplicated, the observations are sharp and the recommendations are worthwhile.
If you are looking for a book that provides a broader perspective on the traditions or history of Spring Training, then perhaps you should look elsewhere. Alan Byrd does not really attempt to cover this here but should not necessarily be faulted for this.
From personal experience of visiting five different venues during Spring Training 2005, this book was a tremendous help and eliminated a lot of mistakes that would otherwise have been made when visiting ballparks for the first time.
Great Guide for Spring Training in FL!.......2005-03-31
We've been going to Florida for spring training for most of the past 25 years. We bought Byrd's guide at the first 2005 spring training game we went to. The reviews of the spring training sites, shade/sun available, autograph opportunities, and food served at the games are right on! We have several other guides, but this one is the best! We used this one for the entire week we were in Florida.
Basic Information Provided.......2005-02-13
As a regular spring travelor, I found this book helpful in some regards, but somewhat limited. The author has consolidated a lot of travel-info into one volume. For example, there is a lot of info regarding the ticket prices and concession items at each of the 17 spring parks in Florida. What the book lacks however, is a historical context that allows readers insight into the history of each ballpark and town. I found "Spring Training Handbook," which provides travel and historical information about the Grapefruit AND Cactus Leagues, much more fulfilling in this regard.
Happy traveling.
GREAT STUFF!.......2004-01-30
Finally someone wrote a book on the Spring Training experience for fans. So much info is written on players and teams, it leaves fans somewhat in the dark as to how to experience spring training throughout the various cities in Florida. This book gives you facts and information that is useful in experiencing spring training statewide. Thanks Byrd.
Book Description
Celebrates the annual baseball rite of spring training through color photographs, many never before published, that he shot over almost six decades.

Ozzie Sweet - The Babe Ruth of Photographers.......2005-06-24
I thouroughly enjoyed viewing the old and new photos in Ozzie Sweet's new book and reading the accompanying stories. His photographic style is unmatched even today in the unique way in which he posed his shots. It's amazing how he captures such such great colors and seems to look into the souls of his subjects. After reading the book it is amazing how many current day sports photographers look at him as a baseball player would look at Babe Ruth. Whether you are a camera buff or a sports fan, I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
In the spring of 1946, following the defeat of Hitler’s Germany, America found itself still struggling with the subtler but no less insidious tyrannies of racism and segregation at home. In the midst of it all, Jackie Robinson, a full year away from breaking major league baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was undergoing a harrowing dress rehearsal for integration—his first spring training as a minor league prospect with the Montreal Royals, Brooklyn’s AAA team. In Blackout, Chris Lamb tells what happened during these six weeks in segregated Florida—six weeks that would become a critical juncture for the national pastime and for an American society on the threshold of a civil rights revolution.
Blackout chronicles Robinson’s tremendous ordeal during that crucial spring training—how he struggled on the field and off. The restaurants and hotels that welcomed his white teammates were closed to him, and in one city after another he was prohibited from taking the field. Steeping his story in its complex cultural context, Lamb describes Robinson’s determination and anxiety, the reaction of the black and white communities to his appearance, and the unique and influential role of the press—mainstream reporting, the alternative black weeklies, and the Communist Daily Worker—in the integration of baseball. Told here in detail for the first time, this story brilliantly encapsulates the larger history of a man, a sport, and a nation on the verge of great and enduring change.
Customer Reviews:
A New and Revealing Look at a Familiar Story.......2006-07-23
An excellently researched and written book. One would think that there isn't much new to be said about Jackie Robinson, who is among the two or three most written-about men in the history of baseball, but Lamb tells a story that has previously received little attention, mainly because the mainstream news media didn't think it was worth covering.
Lamb points out that black newspapers covered Robinson from the moment he began spring training with the Montreal Royals in 1946, and he uses many of those papers as his sources. In retelling the story of Branch Rickey's historic decision to sign Robinson and break baseball's color line, he refuses to treat Rickey as a lone, saintly hero; he points out that, for decades before Rickey joined the fray, black newspapers, socialists, and Communists had been agitating for the inclusion of blacks in organized baseball. Lamb shows that Lester Rodney, sportswriter for The Daily Worker, was also instrumental in the struggle to bring integration to the game. His is a name that seems to have been dropped from the record when other authors retell Robinson's story.
The most powerful aspect of the book is the way Lamb portrays the gagging outrageousness of the racial prejudice and discrimination Robinson faced in the Jim Crow-era American south. The vicious, buck-naked bigotry he and other blacks encountered ought to make every white American ashamed.
