5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to discussing puberty with 9/10 yr olds!.......2007-09-01

My son and I had the best laughs reading this book; somewhat embarrasing at times but it was all out there, he was able to ask questions and it was a great way to discuss these things with him as it is with any child. I highly recommend this book for 9 or 10 year olds if your ready to discuss such things with them.

5 out of 5 stars Great discussion opener!.......2007-07-23

I bought this book for my 10 year old son. It has great explanations and funny illustrations. It really opened the "sex talk" door for both of us and started us in open discussions for present and future questions. Best book on "pre-teen/teen" changes that I've encountered.

2 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-05-09

I wouldn't recommend this book it is OLD and out of date.
The book was in excellent condition though.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a 10 year old.......2007-02-08

I appreciated that it had enough information without getting too involved with older/more complicated topics. It was cute and easy to read, so it was comfortable for my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Your Kids Need This!.......2007-01-15

The likelihood is that kids will not go to their parents requesting information and advice on personal topics such as puberty, no matter how close of a relationship between the child and the parent. Even Judy Blume, someone who gets questions from kids all over the world, says that her own kids are reluctant to come to her. Whether we want to admit it or not, kids prefer to learn from their friends and reading. I gave this and other similar books to my son, instructing him to read them if he wanted to learn and to feel free to ask questions. As a result, my son, now an adult, developed a great understanding of these matters and can discuss these topics without fear of being embarrassed and/or being wrong. It's great if you plan to talk with your child. However, be sure to supplement the talk with books he/she can read on their own. I strongly recommend this book.

Book Description

From the award-winning author of the best books on puberty — A completely new book written especially for 8-11-year-old girls, playfully illustrated in an appealing, two-color design.

Young girls before the onset of puberty have a curiosity about their soon-to-be changing bodies that needs addressing in a simpler way than for their older sisters. In the proven, trust-worthy, Madaras-friendly voice and style, this entirely new book now brings them the same kind of thoughtful, down-to-earth information—but at a reading and understanding level that's just right for them.

Responding throughout to real-life questions and observations from younger girls, Madaras explores the strange and thrilling changes that are happening, or about to happen, to them, including: the development of breasts, body hair, and body fat; the changes in their reproductive organs, both inside and out; their first period and all the complex feelings surrounding it; the unwelcome appearance of acne and new body odors; and, perhaps most important, how to respect and celebrate their unique bodies, even when the outside world is not always so accepting.

Lively cartoon drawings throughout make the book not only helpful, but fun to read, too.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction for "tweens".......2007-10-11

I bought this book (along with a stack of others) to begin a dialogue with my 9 year old about the facts of life. Of all the books I reviewed, this one most well suited my daughter, with its colorful (and playful) illustrations and conversational tone (she loved the "eew gross!" references!).

It adequately (and thoroughly) begins the discussion of how her young body is beginning to change, while avoiding any real (and not yet necessary) details about sex. Of course, it does reference the fact that all of these changes are ultimately happening to make her body ready for having babies....but spares her the gory details she is just not yet emotionally ready for.

We read much of the book together, and it is playful enough to foster a nice opening for dialogue on the changes she is about to go through. She has approached me several times while reading it on her own with questions, and has referred to it a couple of times when, for example, she was feeling some growing pains, and when she was trying to make healthier food choices while packing her own lunch, etc...

Overall, a winner. I'd highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Good As it Gets For Me.......2007-09-24

It was a very hard decision for me to choose a book and this ended up being the one I chose for my girl. Mainly because it has alot of information and fun graphics that help make this serious topic a little more light hearted. Some of the info is a bit much for my 9 1/2 yr old but I can see her referencing back to this book later. My important focus was for my DD to understand her menstrual cycle and what is happening. It's a bit detailed regarding the female reproductive organs which I think is just a bunch of big words for her now, but like I said can be something she can reference back to as she gets older. I did like it's recognition of how these changes can make you feel awkward but the author encourages her young readers to feel proud of themselves. This book could have been better if the author had explained intercourse but apparently she has a different book for that.

There were so many books and so many varying reader reviews from not enough info to porn for the same book! For example the reviews on the American Girl My Body book are glowing but for me there was no detailed explanation as to why a woman has her cycle, there was alot of fluff that was okay for younger girls but not a girl approaching puberty. I think that shows that this is a very individual choice for each family. My reccomendation is to browse here but go to your local library or a bookstore and look before you come back to Amazon to buy. I think the best book is the one you write yourself, but since that's not going to happen it's important you have a chance to look cover to cover for the book you know your child will be reading cover to cover several times over the next few years - good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Your Son!.......2007-09-15

I purchased this book for my 11 year old son so that he could have a better understanding of what makes girls tick. He already has a good bit of knowledge on boys body development and we wanted him to know more. This was a good general information book that explains the changes he is already seeing in some of his classmates.

5 out of 5 stars "Ready, Set, Grow: A What's Happening to my Body? Book for younger Girls.......2007-08-24

Great Book! Lots of good solid information for a younger girl of 8yrs.
We did not read the whole book because it was not information she needs right now.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book to start talking about growing up and changes.......2007-05-11

I notice some changes in my daughters appearance and I knew it was time to start to have some discussions. We have worked our way through two chapters reading together and talking about stuff. A heck of a lot more than I got when I was growing up. Hopefully this will help her get through these changing times

Can you guess what all these chapter titles are about? Give you a hint: everything you ever wanted to know about (but were afraid to ask)... You got it, boys and puberty! Author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded and updated their sensitive, detailed, often witty guide for boys on the cusp of adolescence. To help boys realize they are not alone in their concerns about masturbation, body hair, growth spurts (or lack thereof), female puberty, voice changes, perspiration, shaving, and sexuality, this classic guide is written in a down-to-earth, nonjudgmental style and filled with answers to the many questions boys have as their bodies begin the transformation into adulthood. As a result of thousands of reader letters over the years, as well as the ever growing body of information about puberty in boys, the third edition has been revised to include more detailed discussion of penis size (the authors get more questions about penis size than all other topics combined), updated information on acne treatment, expanded sections on eating right, exercise, steroid abuse, and weight training, and important facts about STDs, AIDS, and birth control. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, and diagrams, the guide is designed with the understanding that some boys and parents will want to read it together, while others will want to pore over it on their own. Either way, this resource will prove to be incredibly useful for boys and their parents over these strange, exciting years. The companion volume for girls, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls is a must-read as well. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars Growing Up.......2007-08-11

A very good book that has answers to questions that some parents have a hard time explaining and talking about. Worth getting and keeping on your book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars It depends on the child - great for my son!.......2007-07-10

I got this book on recommendation of a friend who read it with her son at age 10.

I read a prior reviewer's comment that no pre-teen boy would ever read this book on his own. My husband and I introduced this book to my son when he was 11 (right before the start of 6th grade). My husband and I pre-read the book and then I casually gave it to my son, asked him to read it and to ask us any questions. At first I noticed him glancing through it and skipping around from chapter to chapter. Whenever he had a question, he'd come to one of us - but not too frequently.

Two months into middle school, my son seemed to be reading the book all the time. I am assuming it was because of the "older" discussions, etc. the boys were having. I also thought that he may be trying to figure out if the information he was getting from friends at school was correct. My son initiated several discussions with us about information he read in the book. I don't think he found any of the terms too clinical. In fact, I believe the book gives the correct terminology and some common or slang terms as well. (i.e. "wet dreams") I have always taught my son the correct terminology for body parts, etc.

When my son's school (all boys) had their health seminar at the end of 6th grade, he took the book to school with him - I believe to share it with the teacher (a female).

All in all, I think the book was very informative and gave my son the truth.

I would suggest that parents read it first to determine if their sons can handle it. I cannot imagine giving my child this book on his 10th birthday - he was definitely NOT ready then. But my friend did just that and she, her husband, and her son developed weekly discussions on it.

4 out of 5 stars Good conversation starter........2007-05-17

My husband and I have always been very open with our son regarding sex and body issues, in an age-appropriate way. He is now nearly 11 and we got this book for him. He giggled a bit about it but when I let him know I'd be glad to talk about any of the chapters with him, I was a little surprised that the first thing he wanted to talk about was the section on girls..... being a boy, we'd been filling him in on what to expect from his own body but forgot that he'd be curious about the "gentler sex". It's been a nice tool and we have left it on the bookshelf in his room. He can peruse it at his own pace and when he's wondering about things, knowing that he can always come to us with questions about anything.

I think it's an informative book that is, like my title suggests, a good conversation starter. It's not a substitute for talking with your kids about sex and the things that happen during puberty and beyond.

We're very happy with this book and it fits our parenting style.

5 out of 5 stars Moms need this! More than dads. Maybe more than sons........2007-04-19

Dads may know all this stuff already, but moms don't have a clue! And moms are the ones who actually explain male anatomy & physiology to their sons. We're the ones who spend the most time with young boys and have the most opportunities to teach. Since we don't have first hand experience, we need factual information.

I have two sons, and learned only from this book, how boys develop and what is typical. I was shocked to learn this information, until you consider that, as a girl, I had no opportunity to learn. And this topic can be so uncomfortable for men, that they don't know this information either. They may be relying on only their personal experience or viewpoints.

I actually consider this one of the most important books a mother can read. This is more important for a son's future self esteem than all those books about the problems of rearing toddlers that mothers are encouraged to read. I feel so strongly about our collective ignorance as mothers that I had to write. In fact, I'm giving this book as a gift to other mothers. Moms need to read this book. Learn something.

5 out of 5 stars Boys need this.......2007-01-13

Boys may be too shy to ask their parents about these issues. This book helps to open the door for further discussion.

What mysterious condition are these now grown-up girls talking about? Ah, yes, puberty! With scads of personal stories and an abundance of useful, detailed information about girls' changing bodies and feelings, author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded their guide for girls on the verge of change. First published in 1983, the bestselling classic has been revised and updated several times over the years to keep up with ever evolving facts and wisdom about puberty in girls. In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. A welcome, reassuring book for parents and daughters, designed with the understanding that some girls and parents will want to read it together, and some will want to read it on their own; without a doubt, though, all will benefit. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and informative.......2007-01-06

When I was nine, I was given this book along with "the talk". While talking is certainly something parents should do with their children to inform them about sex, they should also give them this book. It clearly explains sexuality with a main focus on puberty using small words and fairly large type for easy reading. By the age of twelve I had mostly outgrown this book because of the focus on puberty, so this book is best given earlier. This book also contains a short chapter on what is happening to boys at this age, which was also immensely useful.

As a short aside, I would like to mention that I am horrified by some of these reviews. If you wait to give this book to your daughter, or refrain entirely because it has an illustration of male genitalia, or because it mentions masturbation, or it doesn't promote the religious message of you have to wait until marriage, or that homosexuality is wrong and a sin, that is a bad decision. Children already know about sex from their classmates, and they don't know correct information. Some kids are already having sex at twelve. And if you wait to give this to your child, they won't know how to do it safely. I know you think, "oh, my ________ would NEVER do that". They may. And if they don't by age twelve or thirteen, they still will probably have done something sexual by the time they are sixteen or seventeen. And by the way, if you don't let them see an illustration of male genitalia, they will look it up. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative.......2006-10-22

I read this book in fifth grade, and I still remember it to be interesting and informative. Some reviewers have mentioned that it provides too much information for younger readers; at age 11 I personally had no problems with it. Nationwide the trend has become to provide less information in regards to puberty, sex, etc. It's important that teenagers and to-be-teenagers are well-informed, and there is nothing in this book that should be disturbing or traumatizing. As the author suggests in the book, any reader who finds the information to be too thorough may simply skip over the parts irrelevant to her. In addition, readers may always come back to the book at a later date and more mature age, but there is good information in it for the pre-teen set as well.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this book as a factual and informative read. It's also well-written and interesting enough to read in one day.

3 out of 5 stars Way too much information for a young girl.......2006-08-23

I bought this book with the intention of giving it to a girl who just turned 12. Both her mother and I agreed it was way to much information and the illustrations were too graphic for a 12 year-old. The intent of the book is commendable but some parents may take issue with the author's opinions on the subjects covered. It might be better for an older girl but parents/relatives should read the book carefully before handing it over to even a young teenager.

I'm not finished but i'm already enjoying the book,i'm reading about "All About Having Periods" it's telling me everything about why i'm having headaches. So I just want to say that I want to meet the person that made this book and congratulate her on a splendid job she did with her book, and I really want the next book she wrote. I'm Irwinique Storr and i'm 10 years old and I live in Nassau, Bahamas to say that your book was magnificant. Thank you very much for listening to my review about your book, and I give your book 5 stars for creativity and for helping young girls like us feel safe for whatever happen to our body, my email adress is [...]and I really want you to tell me how you felt about my article so that I could know that you do care about us and our feelings.

The sense of bewilderment and confusion many of LG's readers experience by the contrast between the latter books and her most popular book, EMYLIW, simply rests in the lack of recognition by her readers that the key concepts and ideas in the former were simply not hers. In my opinion, having read EMYLIW I was saddened to discover that virtually the entire book was a plagiarism of the Abraham-Hicks material (an opinion I also share regarding The Secret). She attests to this herself in a rather patronizing acknowledgement of the Hickses in the forward to the book. Her readiness to excuse herself from the ethics of ownership -- like her violation of the principle of anonymity espoused in Alcoholics Anonymous as she did in her first book -- is not realized by most of her readership. Her last two books, alas, are at least primarily her stuff. I would encourage her saddened and disappointed fans to read and listen to the Abraham-Hicks books and CDs which still unwaveringly, and authenticly, apply the Law of Attraction to our everyday life experiences.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-05-15

Lynn Grabhorns explanation of how we got here, why we are here, and what is going on, Is a real eye opener, and all makes perfect sense. I love her down to earth style, and her honesty. She has made her journey home, and I look forward to the moment when I can tell her just what an impact she had on my life. I have no doubt, I'll be seeing her!

4 out of 5 stars It was ahead of its time.......2007-04-16

I am a big fan of Lynn Grabhorn, especiall her book, Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting. When this book first arrived I began to read. It wasn't for me. I was lost. I thought she was crazy for writing this. I thought she might have been smoking something.

Now four years later. I picked it up again. I was getting ready to donate it to the local library. Then I sat down and began reading again. Whoa! It made sense. It was still a little wild but it began to make sense.

They say that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Lynn was ahead of her time when she write this, however, its time now.

When is enough, enough? When do we have a modern-day tea party? When do we stand up for our rights? This book gets you thinking even through its unique conversation.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous, Excellent Work.......2007-04-13

Personally, I am grateful for Lynn's courageous effort in writing this book and making sure it was published. From my own personal experience and study, the information she is sharing in this book is accurate, valid and helpful. The naysayers who ridicule a woman they've never met, attack and slander and slur her are very amusing, and they speak loud and clear about who and what they really represent, stand for and which side they've chosen.

After this read, Lynn's first book, "Excuse Me Your Life Is Waiting" has even greater meaning, relevance and importance. Like any true representative of truth and Light, who have been mocked, ridiculed and even killed (Jesus the Christ, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jr.), Lynn's detractors and critics can join the millions who were & are misguidedly wrong and greet their dark, shallow, pious demise as they so choose.

READ THIS BOOK! Your life and all of Life are waiting on you...

3 out of 5 stars This is what The Secret will do to you.......2007-03-22

The dangerous side of New Age is often mental illness, psychological distress, and distorted view of reality. There is a side that The Secret and Conscious Creation junkies don't tell you ... and it is that the spirit world is composed of light and dark. Playing with negative entities is a recipe for disaster. Yes Lynn Grabhorn had a nervous breakdown ... a direct result of her being spiritually tampered by the woo-woo. Beware of things that tickle your eyes for they will blind your eyes and much much worse.

5 out of 5 stars The beginnings of Lean in the west?.......2004-11-10

Michael Greif has written a book on lean principles long before the MIT study resulted in "The Machine the Changed the World".

The foundation of lean is generally agreed to be the 5Ss, kaizen, and visual communication. This book, while focused on VC, does adequately cover the others. Consider this... the book was written in the late 80's, when Lean Manufacturing as a term had not yet been coined.

And now, the review... this is an excellent study on visual communication. Although limited in scope (most practical examples were of western European factories), it is a study that should not be limited to factories; rather, one that has application in many aspects of daily life.

Practical examples, diagrams, drawings, and checklists abound. Definitely user-friendly, and as the subject matter demands, visually communicative.

5 out of 5 stars A Way to Improve Quality & Productivity.......2002-01-16

I think this easy to read book is a must for all the industry sectors. It illustrates visual management (or visual communication; VC) as a very important issue to boosting the factorys' or companys' productivity through increasing the effectiveness of the employees' from head management to the shop floor workers by the effective sharing of information and by encouraging the workers to participate in developing these information. In addition; VC helps in building a sense of belonging to the factory or company within the workers themselves which will work in the factory (company) best interest.

The book introduces guide lines for applying the VC. I think that the real cases covered along with the many different graphs and pictures really helped in clearing out many points.

This is a very readable and credible work. Chapter six on visual process indicators is my favorite. It was an a-ha moment for me!!

5 out of 5 stars Upper West Side expands to Brooklyn........2006-11-10

Not having lived in New York City since the early 1980s, until my niece graduated from Yale and moved to Brooklyn, I still thought that all of the action was in Manhattan. This riveting book furthered her endeavor to disabuse me of that illusion, even though I will always be an inveterate Upper West Sider at heart.

4 out of 5 stars Brooklyn!.......2005-07-09

I think this book is a great resource for someone who is new to the area. It gives a listing of various events, businesses, etc. in Brooklyn. It divides the borough up by neighbhorhoods which makes it user-friendly. I recommend this book for someone who is new to the Brooklyn area.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Book Out There!!.......2004-04-18

This book is the best resource for everything-Brooklyn! This book puts Zagats to shame. It is the perfect guide to key Brooklyn neighborhoods, and you should not leave home without it! In fact, I keep a copy in my car, just in case... If I could give a book a 6 star rating, this book would get it!

5 out of 5 stars New, Improved and Just in Time.......2004-04-14

I've owned both of the previous editions of this guidebook and the new one is the biggest and best yet. While I've hit a lot of these places before, the authors seem to have found a few new ones that even this veteran of Brownstone Brooklyn didn't know about. What I enjoy most is taking the book along and just cruising a new neighborhood from one end to the other. That's how I discovered Brighton Beach, with this book under my arm. I give this one a two-thumbs up and five stars. Want to know Brooklyn? This is the book!

5 out of 5 stars Good news!.......2003-04-14

This is still the most comprehensive guidebook to old and new Brooklyn. And, a little birdie tells me that there's another one in the pipeline...

5 out of 5 stars A great bathroom read.......2007-04-02

I recently moved to Memphis, TN from Pennsylvania. I picked up this book to familiarize myself with TN history. It is an excellent book for reading on the "thinking chair". I picked out a number of places to visit with my family, based on the short articles and topics in the book.

5 out of 5 stars fun book.......2004-06-24

This book is great fun to read through. There are many anecdotes and stories in addition to the facts. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing TENNESSEE.......2002-10-04

Not only is this book helpful, it is very interesting. There were parts where I couldn't stop laughing. I shed a few tears on some pages. I really learned a lot about the State of Tennessee.
It's the kind of book you can carry with you and read anytime.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book for finding out little-known material.......2000-11-17

The title of Lacey's new book might well be "Everything you ever wanted to know about Tennessee, but couldn't find elsewhere." Crammed full of interesting and little-known facts about the Volunteer State, the book is sure to be a hit with trivia buffs. Everything is in here, from historic information about the 1877 rainstorm of snakes in Memphis to current listings of the state's best fishing streams. This book will make a great "stocking stuffer," and it's out just in time for Christmas. Anyone who has the least connection to Tennessee should own this book and read it cover from cover. I'll guarantee you'll learn something about our great state you didn't know.

5 out of 5 stars Tennessee is an Amazing State!.......2000-10-07

This is a really good book about a state I love to visit. I especially liked the chapter about the Civil War in Tennessee. One of the most fascinating stories involves Cravens House atop strategic Lookout Mountain. During the Battle of Chattanooga the house served as the headquarters for the Confederates and the Union on the same day. I think the tragedy and chaos that must come in little anecdotes like that really personalize a major conflict. There are tons of stories about real people and delightful destinations for day trips in this book.

Book Description

ith the same warmth, sensitivity, and depth that made her books What's Heaven? and What's Wrong with Timmy? so successful, bestselling author Maria Shriver delves into another difficult issue confronting families across the country-Alzheimer's disease, and the onset of memory loss in the aging. Through the inspiring story of young Kate and her grandpa, adults can teach and comfort children trying to understand what's happening to their elderly loved ones. Kate, the same young heroine of the New York Times bestsellers, What's Heaven? and What's Wrong With Timmy?, has always adored her grandpa's storytelling-but lately, he's repeating the same stories and asking the same questions again and again. One day, when he forgets Kate's name, she knows she must find out what's happening to grandpa. Her mother's patient explanations open Kate's eyes to what so many of the elderly must confront. Determined to support her grandfather, she explores ways to help him-and herself-cope with the changes. Together, they create a photo album, and Kate writes down the many stories of her grandpa's incredible life. The memories, and the bond they've forged, will be in their hearts forever. With special insight that derives from her own father's struggle with Alzheimer's, Maria Shriver offers a touching and optimistic story that encourages awareness, acceptance, and dialogue with family and friends. Her characters' positive solutions lead readers to discover something that everyone needs-a ray of hope during troubled times.

5 out of 5 stars A SENSITIVE AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK.......2007-03-05

This is a very sensitive book addressing the horrible problems when a loved one is diagnoses with Alzheimer's Disease. The book is seen through the eyes of a child, a questioning child and the answers provided are quite good. This is a well done work and covers issues which, at times, can be diffiult to address with the young child. I not that this paricular work is probably being down graded somewhat due to the fact that the author is a celebrity, of sorts. I will be the first to state that many of the "celebrity written books" are indeed pure garbage and that just because they look good in front of a camera, does not make them an expert on just about any thing. (Actually, generally speaking, as a group, they are just about the most clueless folks we have in our society). In this case though, Shriver has indeed done her research and does indeed pull it off and the work shoud not be judged on just what the author does for a living. All in all, recommend this one highly.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and very touching.......2005-08-06

Families can struggle with teaching children about aging and illness, especially when it hits so close to home with grandparents. Ms. Shriver has succeeded in putting all the sensitive feelings and thoughts that naturally occur when a loved ones develops Alzheimer's.
Soft watercolor pictures accompany meaningful text to describe families from all backgrounds as they begin the long and sometimes painful journey with seniors as their memories fade, they repeat themselves, can't remember things, and ask the same questions over and over.
Meant for older children, this book is a wonderful starting point to begin discussions of this topic with classes and/or your children at home.
So thorough is the coverage in this book that it even includes a wealth of additional resources in the back pages with websites and 800 #'s for further information on Alzheimer's education and aging.

4 out of 5 stars Another Resource for Alzheimer's Families.......2005-04-29

Maria Shriver's tender story is a gift to the millions of families who are struggling with a family member's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Shriver does an excellent job of guiding us through that initial shock and showing us ways to cope. I know from experience that the months and years that follow such a diagnosis provide innumerable opportunities for continued struggle and growth. For this reason, I wrote "Flowers for Grandpa Dan: A gentle story to help children understand Alzheimer's disease." This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a family through the entire disease process. Faced with the daily realities of the disease, Danny and his family find ways to adapt to Grandpa Dan's changing needs. Through it all, Danny learns that there is one important thing that never changes. An informational page, provided by the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter, offers adults suggestions for helping children cope. "Flowers for Grandpa Dan" is available on Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

3 out of 5 stars What happens to Grandpa.......2005-03-09

It is a great book for the whole family. It tells how a family deals with there Grand father who has alztimers. The girl named Kate who helps her Grand father remember things by a photo albume, the way she helps is write the stories that went with the pictures. I would give it three stars because it is not really a kids book it is more a family kind of book. But it is still a great book. And the pictures are great they are watercolors.

2 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT RESOURCE ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S FOR CHILDREN.......2004-07-02

Contrary to popular belief, Ms. Shriver's book wasn't actually the first book that was geared toward children in an attempt to help them have a better understanding about Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Ann Frantti wrote a book entitled "Grandma's Cobwebs" several years ago on this same topic. Not only does her book explain the workings of this dreadful disease, it also has a supplementary booklet that has FAQs to help parents with any questions their children may have.

Unfortunately, Dr. Frantti doesn't have the benefit of Ms. Shriver's "star power" in terms of getting publicity about "Grandma's Cobwebs," but her book is excellent.
