2 out of 5 stars Not so sure if I would recommend..........2002-10-01

I ordered this book for my stepdaughter and opened it to find subject matter regarding the pleasures of masturbation and how to shave pubic hair. I would have liked to have known this before purchasing the book. No where does it say that these topics are covered. The book is supposed to be about journaling ideas for young women not lessons on the birds and bees.

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring, but not too informative........2001-11-11

I bought this book awhile back, and it's cute, and it inspired me to get journaling, but honestly, the information is for kids who are just getting into journaling. Tips like "decorate with pictures of you and your friends in your journal" are pretty much already well-known.

Otherwise, Jessica did a good job on letting younger kids know how to get started on a journal.

5 out of 5 stars Totally inspiring for any female who reads it.......1999-10-02

Jessica Wilber is my step-cousin. I am so proud of her for writing this book. I've been keeping a diary on and off for all my life but I'll tell ya I never realized how little feeling I put into it. After reading her book I realize that a journal should reflect it's writer 100% and mine doesn't. Well, I hope it does more that I've been using my cuz's ideas. Good luck on your journaling everyone! Janie

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for young girls!.......1999-07-27

This is a perfect way for young girls to learn to start a journal! It gives many ways to get started and to keep going. I would reccommend it to any young inspiring writers, or to those who don't even know it yet. I have given this as a gift to all my young relatives!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book............1999-06-13

This book is great. It's a must have for everyone. This book has inspired me to start writing, too. You should go out and buy it today.

Book Description

For thirty-three-year-old Mohammed al-Rehaief, this decision -- whether to risk his life and everything he held dear to save Private First Class Jessica Lynch, an American soldier he did not know -- was more than the everyday reckoning with death that permeates wartime. It was the culmination of a life spent at odds with the repressive regime that held his country.

Mohammed's story is the tale of what it was like to come of age in a society where violence and betrayal were everyday events, where one in five adult males worked for the state's security apparatus, where a president-for-life demanded absolute loyalty and adulation. Despite his affluent upbringing and a well-connected uncle, Mohammed was hardly sheltered from the surreal cruelties of Iraq. He was arrested and beaten for owning a satellite dish. His young daughter lost a lung to misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery. An idolized cousin was hanged for joining an Islamic political group. A favorite teacher was carted away for making subversive statements and was never seen again.

Yet even as he navigates a culture tarnished by brutality and corruption, Mohammed also reveals unexpected sides of Iraq, scenes of surprising tenderness and stubborn generosity. He writes with insight and humor about the Iraqi schools, the vagaries of its divorce law, the poignant dynamic between its fathers and sons -- between tradition and jolting change.

As Mohammed offers his powerful perspective on themost publicized story of this controversial war, he emerges as an unlikely hero, a complex and charming character whose values transcend ideology: honor, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the sanctity of human life.

5 out of 5 stars We Now Know: Jessica Lynch .......2007-04-17

Five stars for bravado. The Guardian reported on the astonishing faked rescue of Jessica Lynch as long ago as May 2003 [...]
including the fact that military producers were inspired by the story line and production techniques in Jerry Bruckheimer's fictional "Black Hawk Down." It has been clear for nearly four years that Al-Rehaief's reward for his part in the staged rescue was asylum in the US and a big book contract. Hey--knowing how grim the situation in Iraq has become--how the American war has devastated civil society and led to a civil war--wouldn't you do the same thing as Mr. Al-Rehaief?

If I taught journalism classes, I would use this book as an example of how effectively governments have learned to use media to hoodwink citizens.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome with very little J.L. in it.......2005-06-11

This book was an extraordinary look at the life of an Iraqi citizen and the trials he went through before he found JL in the hospital and what he and his family went through after. For those who don't think very highly of JL, you won't read much about her in here. It was a very fast read and hard to put down. Kudos to the author for putting his life and the lives of his entire family on the line to save an American life.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2004-06-01

So many reviews seem to center around whether the events were true or not or with they agree with Lynch's account. (Their paths only cross for a matter of minutes in the book so I don't know how much there is to dispute. Only a 3rd party witness could confirm.) I can say about the book that...
- It was hard to put down.
- It was more about the author's life than her rescue. I enjoyed this intimate look at an Iraqi's family life as much as the rescue.
- It seemed at times too fantastic to be true but that may be simply because my everyday life is a cozy one in America compared to the author's in Iraq.
- Some of the atrocities are hard to read about. I don't think this would be appropriate reading for young children.

5 out of 5 stars Destined To Be a Classic.......2003-11-27

This book is destined to be a classic, in several genres. If you start reading it, be sure you can afford the time to read it all the way through -- it's hard to set down. The opening is intense, yet the reader's hope that that level might be sustained is exceeded -- the story just keeps getting more gripping.

It's an adventure story, history, humor, sociology, a spiritual journey, and a patriotic work all together (it'll make you proud to be an American).

Mr. Al-Rehaief has done more single-handedly to redeem the Arab culture than all of the rest combined.

5 out of 5 stars Stranger Than Fiction.......2003-11-24

Being a Shiite Moslem, Mr. Mohammed Odeh Al-Rehaief has been a first-hand witness to savagery throughout his life. In his home city of Nasiriya, he had been an attorney, and was a wealthy man whose extended family owned properties and businesses. Yet, this did not shield him from the corruption and brutality of Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Who would ever have imagined that an Iraqi citizen would knowingly risk losing everything, including his own life and the lives of his family, in order to save one soldier; a soldier whose country was then engaged in bombing his city to pieces. Here, however, we are forced to believe it, simply because we know that it is true.

It has been pointed out that Mr. Al-Rehaief is given but brief mention in her own book, but the fact is that Pfc Jessica Lynch does express that she will be forever grateful to him. That she does not recall the events as he describes them should come as no surprise, since she was barely conscious of anything except pain during her captivity. By Pfc Lynch's own admission, it is unlikely that she would be alive today if it had not been for the efforts of this Iraqi civilian, and his success in reaching the US Marines, stationed outside the city as they continued their attack.

Maybe it is through his family that we can glean some insight into the character of Mr. Al-Rehaief and where his strong moral values originate: As the book ends, the rest of his family, headed by his father, the son of a sheikh, are waiting in international limbo, not knowing what will happen to them next. They have lost everything. Yet I detect no sentiment of regret, complaint or accusation in their descriptions of the hardships caused by the loss of their entire way of life. Such unselfishness seems unfathomable, but again we are forced to believe it, simply because it is true.

Book Description

The latest Alex Peres mystery begins with a mini-mystery currently providing cocktail party conversation to many of Provincetown's gay community: are young, beautiful, sexy, Irish Maureen Delaney and 40-ish plain-jane Mary Sloan lovers or is Maureen simply a boarder? Opinion is about evenly divided, with numerous snickers and snide remarks. But titillation rapidly turns to united outrage when word gets out that Maureen has been attacked by an unidentified man after leaving a local bar.

Maureen's attorney retains Alex to investigate, but far from clearing up the mystery, Alex seems to fall ever deeper into it. Why did Maureen delay seeing a doctor until all DNA, drug and alcohol tests are iffy at best? Only one test is certain: Maureen is pregnant, not from the night of the attack, but some two months earlier…

5 out of 5 stars Light and Breezy, a Bit Salty.......2006-11-12

This is a very entertaining and well written novel about private investigator Alez Peres. Alex is funny, and she has a dog named Fargo. Set in Provincetown during tourist season, Alex gets involved in a case she soon wishes would just go away. Her clients seem to be less than forthcoming with truthful information, she develops sympathy for the presumed bad guys, catches another case that also involves more twists and turns than she'd like, not to mention travel to the southern region of the U.S.

Then dead bodies start turning up in most unusual places. Take off your shoes, get a refreshing beverage, and keep reading. There are some very interesting characters here, not least of which is the inimitable Grace Sanhope. There is also something beguiling as well as irritating about Mary Sloan, a woman most people would like to overlook, but who seems to be at the center of the case involving the very wealthy Sanhope clan.

Tangled webs abound. Who can blame an investigator for developing a thirst? Sometimes, a person just needs a drink and a little time for reflection, not to mention time for girlfriends and for Fargo, a noble beast who is a welcome addition to literature and an homage to literary sidekicks through the ages.

I recommend you read this book. You'll laugh right out loud at some scenes, like the dinner party gone very wrong. It's not necessary to have read the previous novels in tis series, but if they are all this entertaining, they are next on my reading list.

3 out of 5 stars Just Another Alex Peres Mystery.......2006-08-21

I actually like Jessica Thomas' mysteries themselves. Maybe I'm not too smart, but I have read all three of her books to date and was somewhat surprised at all three endings. I think she writes her characters well in general and the books are a decent length (not too long or too short). I also love Alex Peres' dog Fargo, who is used liberally in each book.

I guess my biggest problem with her writing is the extensive number of pages spent on Alex Peres drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and eating out. I don't tend to enjoy this type of minutiae. I couldn't care less how many cigarettes the woman has had or how many beers and bourbons she's had and the author seems almost obsessed with this lifestyle. Maybe if I was into these things I'd see how it was related the Alex as a person, but frankly I have yet to read a book by Ms. Thomas that didn't spend too much time on alcohol, fast food, and cigarettes. I think literally every other page mentions what she's eating, drinking, or smoking. A woman in her thirties who ate, drank, and smoke like Alex and never got exercise would be fat and ugly for sure, yet Alex is painted as a pretty woman who attracts attention from other women. That's just a little too much fantasy for me in a mystery book.

There are, however, no great grammar or editing issues and the author does have talent. I just wish she's stick to the story or find some other hobbies for her protagonist. For instance, she could spend more time on the fact that the protagonist is a photographer. The author definitely needs better character development for Alex Peres herself.

When Private Jessica has had enough of Vanessa Pruett's bullying.she wants a boxing match,She wins it.Vanessa throws Jessica and her new friends out of Flordia Security Camp,or whatever it's called. Elizabeth's star actors have quit, and it seems that the play might be over before the curtain is raised. I think something about Jessica in jail, and one of her friends friends from the boot camp arrests her or something.

Book Description

She's intelligent. She's witty. She lives in Provincetown and she's got a great dog. Pretty good credentials, one would think. So how come private investigator Alex Peres is single...again?

When a sneaker washes up on the cold winter beach, Alex and her four-legged partner, Fargo, are sent on an unlikely adventure. But that's nothing compared to the one-on-one thrill ride of a new relationship.

From the moment Janet Meacham walks into the Wharf Rat Bar, Alex's usually stable world rocks like never before. Just as work and love seem to settle down, that sneaker comes back to kick Alex right between the eyes.

Alex would do anything for Janet -- remodel her bachelor household, clean out the closets and even make Fargo share the bed. But if she can't figure out where that sneaker came from, Alex may not live long enough to enjoy the happy-ever-after ending she's finally let herself believe in.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Better-Than-Average Mystery.......2004-11-01

I generally love romances and merely tolerate mysteries, but I enjoyed reading Caught in the Net. Jessica Thomas does a good job keeping the reader's attention. She presents both obvious and hidden clues without revealing "who dunnit" too early. The only shortcoming of this book was in the relationship between Alex and Janet. The two women said "I love you" after only a few dates without any real build-up.

4 out of 5 stars Get Caught for an evening!.......2004-10-06

A new dyke detective for the armchair mystery fan has arrived! Caught in the Net is a first novel from Jessica Thomas and introduces Alex Peres. Alex is a thirty-something dyke who lives (and grew up) in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Arguably, one of the country's most famous resort towns for gays and lesbians, Provincetown is "that strange and beautiful place, where the men are pretty and the women are tough." (p1) With its seasonal population tide of tourists Provincetown plays as much of a role in Caught in the Net as many of the characters and Thomas brings the town's New England quirkiness and its queer color to life for her readers.

A thoughtful, self-sufficient, and independent woman, Alex Peres is a wry observer of nature (human and otherwise) who uses that skill to support herself. On the creative side her perceptive eye is expressed by her photography. She creates artistic impressions of the Cape and Provincetown area that are sold at local galleries. Alex's more analytical observation skills go into her work as a private detective. A job, which she explains, is filled with interesting but sometimes tedious work like following a wayward husband.

Fargo, the detective's 90-pound, black lab is as much a star of Caught in the Net as Alex. The details of Alex and Fargo's relationship will bring smiles, chuckles, tail wags, and warm fuzzy feelings, especially to readers with a canine love. Indeed Fargo's companionship is primary to Alex who has had rather bad luck in the love department.

That bad luck has held until a new woman appears in town. Janet Meacham, a beautiful, intelligent, young woman has moved to P'town to start a new chapter in her life. Alex finds herself quite taken with Janet and the attraction appears to be mutual. Alex thinks that this is a relationship that could build in a more positive direction.

Meanwhile the severed human foot that Alex, or rather Fargo, found on the beach during a daily walk is the foundation (as it were) of a series of crimes in the area. Alex's brother, a local cop is looking for a young man who may have known the owner of the foot.

This first novel from Thomas is filled with witty insights regarding human foibles with Alex personifying several endearing qualities. Of herself, Alex claims, "Frankly, I am not a great admirer of children as a species -- the younger ones smell funny and the older ones look as if they know something you don't-- but even I didn't want two young kids stumbling on this piece of flotsam or jetsam or whatever you called a lost/discarded body part". (p10) Or regarding her personal habits, "I sat behind the wheel and took a pack of cigarettes off the dashboard and lit one of the five I allow myself each day. I allow myself five. The other eight or ten I smoke are not allowed." (p11)

Although an engaging character, Alex does not quite ring true as a typical Gen-Xer, which might annoy some readers. The mystery is a little thin with a plot that is probably predictable for most fans of the genre and a tad irritating in that Alex did not seem to see it coming. However, the lovely writing, quirky characters, charming setting, and wry observations provide a great deal of promise for future Alex Peres mysteries. Many readers will find themselves caught in this net for pleasant evening's reading.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining but predictable.......2004-07-25

Less than 1/4 of the way through the book, I knew exactly how the ending would go, but the story was so entertaining that I really didn't mind. Jessica Thomas does a great job with her characters! I can hardly wait to read her next one.

3 out of 5 stars Mystery? Romance?.......2004-07-12

Well this book was ok, not great but enjoyable. I think it was lacking in its ability to keep me guessing who was the bad guy, or girl in that matter. But it was funny and warm.

This is a great book with terrific descriptions of PTown. If you know Commercial Street, you can probably figure out some of the locations. This book is well written. I look forward to more books by Jessica Thomas.

    Book Description

su-per-no-va: n., pl. A rare celestial phenomenon involving the explosion of most of the material in a star, resulting in an extremely bright, short-lived object that emits vast amounts of energy. Given the massive shift in the West's cultural sensibility in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the current global political situation, the 1990s and its over-the-top, anything-goes art scene suddenly appear much more historical than contemporary. If we really are at the turning point that we seem to be, then we've arrived at a particularly opportune moment for reconsideration, for assessing the legacy of the decade after the frenzy has subsided. Supernova brings together a number of curators and critics--each of whom was actively involved in constructing the 1990s art discourse--to step back and consider what trans-identity, broad-based thematic trends can now be identified as emblematic of, or seminal to, the decade. The Kent and Vicki Logan collection of contemporary art offers a compelling and visually alluring vehicle to consider such issues, as these ambitious collectors were firmly planted at the center of the scene--acquiring some of the most challenging and iconic art of the period, including works by Young British Artists (YBAs), Asian practitioners and a diverse array of influential women artmakers. In Supernova, reproductions of these artists' works are dispersed among contributors' essays, which explore such themes as beauty and the abject, iconoclasm and the role of social activism in art.

        Book Description

An anonymous telephone threat endangers more than the professional integrity of arbitrator Barbara Pomeroy in this tautly woven, intricately plotted mystery novel. It also imperils her young son, Toby—unless Barbara rules in the caller’s favor. Nor is Barbara comfortable with the situation at her St. Ives home, where her retired husband, Colin, and Toby have befriended a holiday lodger who goes by the fanciful name of Clarissa Trelawny. In Barbara’s frequent absences demanded by her job, the deceptively charming Clarissa has become a kind of surrogate mother to Toby. When Clarissa Trelawny’s body is found beaten brutally to death, even Barbara is doubting the certainty of her own innocence. Deftly interweaving the narrative strands of Barbara’s disturbing trials both in her career and at home into a fabric of suspense, Jessica Mann’s fifteenth novel explores its heroine’s growing apprehensions and very mixed emotions.

This is one of the most gripping, neat crime novels I've ever read and I loved its setting in the most evocative part of cornwall too. brilliant.

        5 out of 5 stars Self-Knowledge by the Sea.......2001-01-01

"A Private Inquiry," set mainly in St. Ives, in Cornwall, is both an engrossing mystery and a compassionate exploration of self-deception and ultimate awareness. It is a story of two women, whose lives intersect through the machinations of a third. At first, the book seems merely to be about the increasingly troubled circumstances of 40-ish Barbara Pomeroy, a planning inspector, whose life with her much older husband, Colin -- a retired banker and now an amateur artist -- and their son, Toby, the recipient of a kidney and now a healthy, growing boy, has become fraught with growing despair and romantic distress. Barbara is put off by the appearance of a woman, Clarissa Trelawny, who has taken a nearby home and befriended her husband and son, while Barbara herself is away from home, at various planning meetings around the country, feeling increasingly isolated from the affections of her family. Meanwhile, a noted psychiatrist, Fidelis Berlin, 60 years old, comfortable in her prominence but achingly lonely without fully recognizing it, is dispatched to find the missing wife of a business associate, Neville, who is now a fond acquaintance and former lover. The lives of Fidelis and Barbara intersect, following the ghastly murder of Clarissa, when Barbara is thrown under suspicion. Throughout this involving tale, author Jessica Mann leads us, in her cool and considered prose, into the minds of a women who have shaped their lives so very differently: Barbara, who has made herself into a steely professional, self-absorbed but somehow dispassionate and longing for physical affection; Fidelis, clinical and observant, but blind to the nuance of feeling and emotional resonance; and Clarissa, whom no one really knows, and everyone has underestimated. How these two women come to regard the outcome of the turmoil their lives are thrown into, and whether they manage to grow, is part of this book's allure. Ms. Mann sketches the personal history of her conflicted characters with great assurance, a deft awareness of how we are shaped by the losses of our youth, and how a struggle for personal advancement is so often really a yearning for love. Atmospheric and absorbing, "A Private Inquiry" is a thought-provoking novel, more about self-discovery than whodunit, but at the same time a fully realized mystery, ultimately satisfying, poignant and memorable. Highly recommended.
