The Sonoma Diet Cookbook.......2007-09-21
I have been a cook and pastry chef for 20 years. This is the best cookbook I have ever used. I use it daily and have recommended it to several of my friends. The food is amazing. Taste and flavor just explode from each wave. Easy to find ingredients and easy to prepare recipes. After 7 weeks, I have lost 22 pounds and am still enjoying every meal I prepare from the book.
FANTASTIC! FANTASTIC! FANTASTIC!.......2007-09-20
So many yummy, healthy recipes that you don't even miss the butter or gravy! I refer to this cookbook constantly, and the whole family never even realizes that they are eating so healthy. I'm waiting for the author to come out with part 2.
Great Cookbook!.......2007-07-26
Very helpful hints for cooking healthy. Awesome recipes that are healthy but very tasty as well. Highly recommend!
REALLY GOOD VALUE.......2007-07-17
A great cookbook (and believe me I've got lots). Very clear explanations and finger-lickign recipes.Colourful and relatively easy to follow.
The only comment/suggestion I would like to make, is that the book would be greatly enhanced if it had a "Substitutes Glossry" (foods, terms, temperature and so on), ie aimed at other market country markets the book would have - eg Australia, England!
Too many American cookbook authors spoil the impact of their books by not taking this factor into account. Remember people America is not the whole world and therefore is not your whole market.
Great cookbook.......2007-06-10
I love this cookbook and believe me, I have many. It is easy to follow and awesome pictures. The recipes actually come out looking like the photos. I have this on my counter and use it almost daily. Great addition to the Sonoma Diet.

My Favorite Cookbook.......2007-09-29
I've been an avid cook/baker for over 30 years. This is by far my favorite cookbook. It's easy to follow, the ingredients are healthy, and the flavors are wonderful! If I haven't had time to preplan which recipe I'm making that day, I carry the book with me in the car so I can buy the few fresh ingredients at the store before returing home. The cilantro chicken with peanuts is probably the recipe I've made the most. I haven't lost much weight, but that's probably because I indulge in the wine while preparing the meal. Highly recommended unless you are adverse to fresh vegetables, fresh spices and flavor!
The Sonoma Diet.......2007-09-21
I purchased this product with the Sonoma Diet Cookbook The Sonoma Diet Cookbook for my daughter and myself. We are both very pleased with the clear concise reasoning behind the program. You must try this if you enjoy eating fresh, flavorful food without counting calories or points. A very sensible, easy to follow plan for those wanting a lifetime change. The ingredients are easy to find and the meals are fun and simple to prepare. I have lost 22 pounds in 7 weeks, 2 pant sizes and 3 shirt sizes. I plan on eating this way for the rest of my life.
Book, with a message!.......2007-08-01
Given the obesity epidemic North America is currently grappling with, this book serves an important purpose. The book is written in an easy to understand format and clearly articulates the benefits of healthy eating. message. It talks about the power foods, the food which are full of nutrient, have anti oxidant properties, are cholesterol lowering, and have low fat and so on. I also liked a book by Dr Oz. (often touted, no I should say promoted on Oprah show)You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management, the author puts emphasis on waist management as against an obsession on wight loss. Reading these authors, it seems that the new mantra is waist management.
Great Food, but is it realistic?.......2007-07-23
The book is well written, with a conversational tone. It has a lot of great recipes and menus, that you can follow or use as guidelines. As far as the actual diet is concerned, however, she naively assumes everyone lives in a big city with access to specialty food stores. She also plans the menus and recipes as though you're going to be home for every meal. The food is good, the diet well balanced. It will take a lot of adjusting to fit todays lifestyles. This diet would blend well with someone who likes natural, organic, or health foods.
A comparison of Diet Books.......2007-06-03
Like many of you, I found myself wondering what the differences were between the various diet programs. What I discovered is that all of the major diet books are well written and share many similarities. None of them offered an "silver bullet" to weight loss - it primarily comes down to keeping your calories burned greater than your calories eaten. There are theories presented about glycemic index, good vs. bad carbs, etc., but at the end of the day it's about calories and exercise.
In this review, I've tried to offer brief summaries of each diet book/program in hopes that it might help you pick out the one that would work best for you. Don't pay too much attention to the number of stars, as it's my own subjective rating based on effectiveness, ease of use, and ability to stick with the diet. Instead, try to discern which diet might fit your lifestyle better.
The Abs Diet, ****
This book is written by David Zinczenko, the editor of Men's Health Magazine. The diet likes the number 6 - promising "6 pack abs in 6 weeks," by eating 6 meals a day. Each meal is built around the "power 12" foods. There is a strong emphasis on whey supplements. The fitness program was easy to follow but perhaps too strenuous for beginners and seemed better suited to men. Strong points are excellent nutritional content and strong exercise. Weak points are questionable claims about rapid weight loss and "6 pack" abs, and mediocre meal plans. Average recommended daily calories are 1,890, with 7 fruits and vegetable servings.
The South Beach Diet ****
The SB Diet is a slightly more permissive version of the Atkins low-carb diet. It is based on the premise that eating low-glycemic foods (foods that don't raise blood sugar) decreases cravings for sugar and refined carbs. Like many of the diets, there are two phases. In the first phase, fruits, sugar, and grains are banned outright. Phase 2 allows some fruit, high-fiber grains, and dark chocolate. The simplicity of the diet might appeal to many busy dieters. However the emphasis on the glycemic index and insufficient exercise sections are a drawback. Recipes are easy to prepare, but some called for unusual ingredients (a clever cook could make substitutions). Average recommended daily calories are a mere 1,340, with 13 fruits and vegetable servings (mostly veggies).
The Sonoma Diet ****
The Sonoma Diet is an updated low-carb diet with a Mediterranean theme. Again, it is broken into two phases, called "waves." In "Wave 1," the dieter is banned from eating most sweet or refined foods. The much longer "Wave 2" permits fruits and wine. It has a unique method of calculating portions by filling sectors of small plates with specified food categories. The diet is healthy but complex. It is also very restrictive, which makes it more difficult to stay on. Also, the book doesn't offer enough on exercise. The recipes were tasty but elaborate to prepare. Average recommended daily calories are a mere 1,390, with 10 fruits and vegetable servings.
Ultra-Metabolism ***
The Ultra-Metabolism Diet is designed around the assertion that people get fat because their body's systems become toxic, inflamed, and imbalanced. Again, this is a two phase diet. Phase 1 is an initial "detox" period. The longer Phase 2 is a "rebalancing" period. Overall, the dieter must eliminate white rice, refined grains, most red meats, and caffeinated beverages. The theory of your body requiring detoxification goes beyond any scientific evidence and rings a bit of late night television "miracle detox bowel-cleansing pills." The diet is fairly restrictive and complicated. The exercise section was brief but practical. Average recommended daily calories are 1,660, with 12 fruits and vegetable servings.
Volumetrics, ****
The Volumetrics Diet is based on Penn State research. It aims to maximize the amount of food you can eat for a given caloric intake. This is done primarily by eating reduced-fat products, adding in lots of vegetables, and using low-fat cooking techniques. It encourages eating a first course of broth-based soup or low-calorie salad (not heavily laden with dressing, cheese or bacon) to take the edge off your appetite. Recent clinical studies have shown this diet to be very effective. The recipes are appetizing but time consuming. Average recommended daily calories are 1,500, with 14 fruits and vegetable servings.
The Zone Diet, ****
The Zone Diet was designed to keep your blood sugar and hormones at optimal levels so that you can better fight obesity and diseases. It requires that each meal consist of 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbs (based on calories). The diet allows many fruits, but almost no grains except oatmeal. The meals are simple to prepare and nutritionally balanced. But having to keep to the 30/30/40 balance is very tedious and requires lots of preplanning. Recent studies showed that the overall weight loss was below average. Average recommended daily calories are 1,660, with 17 fruits and vegetable servings.
Eat More, Weigh Less, ***
The Eat More, Weigh Less (Ornish) Diet is a low-fat vegetarian diet that bans all meat, fish, oils, alcohol, sugar, and white flour. Their clinical studies suggest that strictly following the diet can prevent or reverse some diseases. Ornish argues that it is easier to make drastic changes to diet rather than small ones. The diet offers the most food per calorie of any of the diets. It is actually lower in fat than current USDA guidelines recommend. Studies have shown good long term weight loss, but a relatively high drop-out rate. Average recommended daily calories are 1,520, with 17 fruits and vegetable servings.
Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, ***
The Atkins Diet is the grand daddy of them all. As with many of the other diets, it is divided into two phases. The first phase is a two week induction period that bans nearly all carbs. The second phase is only slightly less restrictive, but does slowly add more vegetables, fruit, and wine. Research has suggested that Atkins' dieters are less hungry than on many other diets. But the diet is difficult to adhere to and has a high drop-out rate. Long term weight loss has been shown to be average. The single most glaring concern with the Atkins diet is that the nutritional profile is far outside conventional dietary guidelines. (We've all known people eating handfuls of bacon, eggs, and cheese for breakfast, claiming they were on a diet). Average recommended daily calories are 1,520, with 6 fruits and vegetable servings.
Again, please don't worry too much about my ranking of the diet books - it's completely subjective. My suggestion is to simply find a program that seems to fit your lifestyle best.
Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.
Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination" - an intense thriller in which a martial artist, a greedy corporate attorney, and a sexy conspiracy theorist team up to stop a world-class sniper from killing presidential candidates.

Just what I wanted but you also need check pro License.......2007-10-19

The Art of Fashion Draping.......2006-02-27
Good information in general, but there a lot of instructions that are unclear and/or EXTREMELY poorly edited (spelling/grammar mistakes etc). The book itself is not good quality and pages are already starting to fall out of my barely-month-old copy.
good intro to draping.......2000-03-15
Excellent intro for novice sewers as a text, or experienced sewers wanting to learn draping skills. Covers tools/equipment, terms/elements of draping, the basic bodice/skirt/shift/sleeve, princess bodice/dress, skirt variations, pants, sleeve and armhole variations, collars, cowl necks, yoke variations, knits, and a few intermediate fashion features like sculptured pleats, bias, boned bustier, ruffles/flounces/gathering, and peplums. To follow the exercises, you must have a dress form (preferrably professional) to work with. But with numbered steps giving a very simplified process, and the very clear and numerous b/w diagrams, you should be able to teach yourself the rudiments of draping unless you are also a beginner at sewing. As a veteran sewer and novice draper, I received this as a textbook for my first draping class and appreciated it as a reference. But it's no substitute for a beginning sewing class. I would strongly recommend this for home sewers ready to move beyond commercial patterns or for first year fashion students.

The UltraSimple Diet: Kick-Start Your Metabolism and Safely Lose Up to 10 Pounds in 7 Days
ASIN: 0425213579 |
Book Description
A provocative expos of the negative effects of sugars and simple carbs-and how to break the addiction.
Most readers already know that succumbing to sweets too often can lead to obesity and diabetes. What many don't know, however, is that too many "quickie carbs" can bring on a host of other maladies-such as "brain fog," fatigue, mood swings, heart disease, and even cancer-from which millions may be suffering because of their sugar or carbohydrate habits. Once besieged by 44 seemingly unconnected symptoms, former "sugar addict" Connie Bennett, an experienced journalist, managed to kick sweets and simple carbs in 1998. She improved her health-and uncovered extensive medical research that substantiated her theory: people who eat too many low-caliber culprit carbs could be in sugar shock. Based on the insights of thousands of physicians, nutritionists, researchers, and "sugar sufferers" worldwide, SUGAR SHOCK!(tm) not only addresses how badly sugar affects the body, it demonstrates how everyone can kick the sugar habit.

READ THIS BOOK! A Wealth of Important Information!.......2007-10-19
After reading this book, I've stopped eating virtually ALL sugars and simple carbs, no easy feat for me - I've always had a sweet tooth and ate lots of junk food and carbs. I always wanted to change my diet and get healthy, and I tried, but my efforts only lasted a few days, if that. I could never discipline myself enough.
Fast forward to SUGAR SHOCK...What Connie writes about and the way she presents her information and facts is very effective. Armed with the knowledge of what sugars and carbs do to our bodies, emotions, and so on, I am now able to pass by the junk and sweets EASILY! After only one week, I already feel different - healthier, thinner (!) more...balanced. It is truly an unbelievable difference, and although it sounds cliche, this book has changed my life! I am on my way to total health! Thank you so much, Connie!
OUTSTANDING Research & presentation.......2007-10-16
Sugar Shock is an OUTSTANDING piece of health literature that is destined to become a classic in the eyes of health professionals as well as the typical consumer. It is jam packed with great research (well footnoted) and it finally puts sugar, crappy carbs and over-processed foods into their rightful category, ie. junk-food.
I am a health coach and professional researcher myself and I recommend this book to over 80% of my clients because they need the information presented and it is easy to read... and it is important to know the information presented in this great book. Sugar Shock is a real eye-opener and an extraordinary work. Thank you Connie, for your tireless efforts to bring this truth to light for all of us.

Avoid Lethal Diseases, Look and Feel Better, and Enjoy Life More with a Healthier Diet.......2007-10-03
Sugar Shock! is the ultimate, up-to-date view based on research for describing how consuming high glycemic foods (ones that are quickly turned into blood sugar) can undermine your health, happiness, peace, and prosperity . . . not to mention your love life and appearance. As such, the book's title is a little misleading . . . white flour, white rice, and vodka are just as much of a problem as is adding sugar to your coffee or drinking high-fructose corn syrup in your Coca-Cola. To handle that, the authors refer to anything that quickly turns into blood sugar as a sugar.
I have read many books on this subject and learned a great deal from each one. Because of so much research being done that overturns false opinions about nutrition, there's a lot that's new to report. Connie Bennett and Dr. Stephen Sinatra provide an extensive bibliography that's worth the price of the book all by itself.
Too many of these "empty" calories (called that because they provide few, if any minerals and vitamins), and you may develop diabetes, cancer, heart disease, female infertility, deep lines in your skin, and accelerate losing your memory.
If that doesn't bother you, foods that turn quickly into sugars can make you feel lousy, be angry, kill your sex drive, make menopause worse, slow down your learning, and depress you.
Further, you can become addicted to these foods . . . about half as much as you can to cocaine.
Neither the food companies nor the government really care if you eat these foods that make you sick. But you should care. With this book, you'll have a good sense of what you should be doing: eating lots of protein, slowly digested fruits and vegetables, good-for-you fats (like those in most fish), and increasing your fiber in anyway you can.
The book provides several programs to help you shift your diet. Of the advice here, the best probably relate to going on a good-for-you diet for 3 weeks to make the switchover and having lots of emotional support as you do. In that sense, the advice isn't too much different from what you'll find from The South Beach Diet and related books. I suggest you check those out as well because you'll get lots of menu and snacking ideas.
But for sheer motivation to reform your eating, it's hard to beat Sugar Shock!
Go munch on something delicious that's good for you!
Do you want to change your life? Sugar Shock! can help.......2007-08-25
I was sugar addicted for years. When I ate sugar, I overate sugar: once I started, I couldn't stop. If I had sweet food for breakfast, I wanted sweet food for lunch, for dinner, tomorrow, and the next day... I was depressed, anxious, irritable, bitchy, and moody. I snapped at my children, lost my temper easily, and cried for no reason. My mood vacillated with my sugar binges, and my self esteem with it.
Does this sound like you?
Sugar Shock! can help. As Connie Bennett explains in her book, sugar is one of the most addictive, damaging substances on the planet. It is toxic to our bodies. And yet, it's pervasive: abstaining from sugar will mean making choices that are counter culture. At first, that can be challenging. Eating almonds while everyone else is enjoying ice cream may feel like deprivation.
But look at what you're gaining. No, I don't have apple pie at Thanksgiving, and I never will again. But here's what I found, in return: freedom from depression. Freedom from the guilt and shame that accompanied my sugar binges. Freedom from the terrible mood swings, irritability, and anger that plagued my home life. Freedom to pursue my life purpose. Freedom to be the woman, wife, mother, and friend I wanted to be.
The rewards are many. The sacrifices, really, are few. I don't miss sugar now. Honestly. My life is full: filled with real sweetness, not the toxic substitute.
Do you want to find freedom? Sugar Shock! can show you how. Freeing yourself from sugar will change your life: I guarantee it. This is one of the best books on sugar addiction that you can buy (I know: I've read them all.) The website is very helpful, too.
sugar and tobacco different ingrediants, same addictive qualities.......2007-08-24
I recently read Sugar Shock, and honestly the title really fits in information given in this book. It is SHOCKING to find out how we are lied to, cheated and lead down a road of disease, sickness and adiction. All for the sake of someone else getting rich! Amazing. This book is such an informative tool. I recently quit smoking, and i feel much better for doing so, but my body still was out of whack.. this book is really helping me figure out why. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a way to understand how sugar can really destroy their lives.

A Piece That Has What Others Don't........2007-09-02
Highly regarded as one of the finest pieces of business investigative journalism written, Connie Bruck's groundbreaking work on the subject of junk bonds and corporate financing was written during a time when the business press universally admired Drexel Burnham for their ability to turn junk into gold.
You will find this book quite entertaining and comprehensible. A smooth read not filled with too much industry jargon, its nomenclature friendly enough even for the beginner. It highlights the bright sides as well as the dark sides of the critically acclaimed Junk-bond king Michael Milken and allows each of us to have his or her own view on Milken and Drexel Burnham's underlying philosophy.
Although the book does lean heavily towards Milken having a me first attitude, it does manage to pin down a few important business lessons underscored by him that cannot be overlooked. You will not waste any time reading this piece. You will definitely be on the winning side by reading this book.
This book will definitely generate scores of topics to discuss and debate about the philosophies of American business that dominated Wall Street in the 1980s. This future classic highlights many corporate raiders that are still vehemently visible today. Just to name a few: players like Carl Icahn, Nelson Peltz, Ron Perelman, T. Boone Pickens and a host of others.
A definite must read for those interested in banking, financial history, and especially for business students.
Amazing account of the rise of Drexel.......2007-04-11
Connie Bruck tells the tale of the rise of Drexel Burnham, Michael Milken, and the modern day junk bond market, from the early beginning all the way up to the end.
The Predators Ball is a great bit of investigative writing. The dramatic events really keep you hooked, although at some points the level of detail requires hunkering down for the long haul. Overall, recommended for any Street junkie or anyone interested in Drexel Burnham and Michael Milken.
Good background information on finance in the 80s.......2007-02-25
This book is a great reference point to many of the activities that occurred in the 1980s and how those events impact Wall Street and the financial markets today. While not as well written as other books in the genre, it makes an emphasis of using facts as opposed to circumstantial evidence presented as facts (which many similar books such as "Den of Thieves" and "Barbarians at the Gate" use) and that makes this book a cut above the rest.
One sided, but a good read.......2007-01-10
I gave the book 4 stars simply for the topic, it reads reasonably well, and it appears that the author has done a good amount of research, covering much of Milken's and Drexel's rise and fall. The book, however, is one sided (against Milken). The last few chapters are blatantly so and become almost unbearable in there tone.
Given the realization of how absolutely astonishing it is that one man influenced, almost singlehandedly, a financial era, I would recommend reading as much on the topic as possible. This would include the Predators Ball.
Good for what it sets out to do but really leaves a lot out.......2006-12-21
This is a decent overview of the malfeasance that was perpetuated by Drexel Burnham and Michael Milken. It however pails in comparison to the account that James Stewart presents in Den of Thieves. If you want to focus on the big event during one year this is a decent way to do it but you are really missing out on a much better account.

Customer Reviews:
The best manual on parenting.......2007-04-18
I picked up this book before having our first child thinking I would get some insights into how to raise our daughter. What I found was that the book was really for me. Through it, I learned about how I have some of the same needs as children--needs like recognition, feeling valued, loved for who I am, unconditionally.
What's more,it helped me understand better what my needs really are and how to get them met by myself and from others who love me. Most importantly I learned that in order to parent my daugther the I way I want her to grow up, I needed to parent myself and make sure my actions are congruent with my what I want for her. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to create a solid, loving, nurturing environment for themselves and their children.
What a good book.......2007-01-14
This book is meant for those that need help to see what they are missing in their life and how that relates to how they parent. I like how they have redone the entire book and still kept the same excellent content. This a workbook type study manuel and it is worth getting. So many parents didn't have superior parenting and this helps fill in the gaps without making the parent feel worthless or stupid.
A book everyone should read !.......2006-11-05
I love this book because of the way it teaches parents how to interact with children of all ages. You do not need to be a parent to benefit from this book. As grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends, we all come in contact with children. I did not have this book when I first became a parent but it is never to late to use this information no matter how old you or your children are. I have given this book to new parents as a gift.
Parenting ourselves, Parenting our children.......2006-10-29
This is a user friendly book that really helps change the pattern we grew up with and helps us to become the healthy parent we needed and did not have. I highly recomment it to become aware of ourselves and to heal into healthy individuals.
Definitely Growing Up Again.......2005-09-23
The book zoned in on what I had missed emotionally in my youth. I was able to put a finger on the fact that my life's foundation was based on denial and discounting, a topic that the book touched on a lot.
The chapter on "Ages and Stages" is definitely an eye opener and you can relate a lot of experiences from it.
It's a must read for everyone.

Connie Willis labored five years on this story of a history student in 2048 who is transported to an English village in the 14th century. The student arrives mistakenly on the eve of the onset of the Black Plague. Her dealings with a family of "contemps" in 1348 and with her historian cohorts lead to complications as the book unfolds into a surprisingly dark, deep conclusion. The book, which won Hugo and Nebula Awards, draws upon Willis' understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering and the indomitable will of the human spirit.
Book Description
For Kivrin, preparing an on-site study of one of the deadliest eras in humanity's history was as simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman traveling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be received.
But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin -- barely of age herself -- finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history's darkest hours.
Five years in the writing by one of science fiction's most honored authors, Doomsday Book is a storytelling triumph. Connie Willis draws upon her understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering and the indomitable will of the human spirit.

Skip the "modern" parts.......2007-09-08
Most of what is wonderful and not so wonderful about this tale has already been covered in previous reviews. All that mars this tale is the almost completely extraneous story of what is going on in the future while Kivrin is trapped in the era of the Black Plague. It is an absolutely maddening series of irritating characters and implausible difficulties, only made more so by the introduction of handbell ringers who I suppose are meant to charm us with their eccentricity. Instead, they are just annoying. My advice: as soon as Kivrin is sent back to 1348, read only the portions of the book set in that time, and only the end of the book when she returns. You will get a beautifully crafted story of human qualities--both base and noble--that are genuinely universal. You won't be quite so removed from the fact that real human beings, people not terribly different from you and from me, suffered and died. But this is the key--some of them prevailed, and that is what lifts this story to its heights.
Great Read.......2007-09-01
I won't go into a lengthy synopsis since there are already so many. I loved the detail that Connie Willis put into this novel. She weaves history, the future, and public policy into a great story. The character descriptions were wonderful. I enjoyed this book tremendously.
Heart wrenching!.......2007-07-06
I had not read any of Willis' other books but discovered this one when doing a search for books about time travel. I found this book at once compelling and frustrating. It was written in 1992 and I am surprised that while Ms. Willis forsaw quite a few changes by 2048, she nevertheless has her one of the main character forever waiting around for the phone to ring. I kept wanting to say "where is your cell phone?".
I genuinely cared about the characters and loved the bits of humor is a hugely tragic story.
I wish I could give this one SIX stars . . ........2007-06-28
Willis is one of the very best writers of our generation and she has half a dozen each of Hugos and Nebulas to prove it. This is far and away her best book yet, and it won both awards. THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW called it a "tour de force", and they're not wrong. The setting is the university community in Oxford in the mid-21st century, which hasn't changed in its essentials since Victorian times. There are numerous casually mentioned technological gewgaws, but the academic world is still largely the same. The big change is that time travel is now available for historical research, which she first made use of in "Fire Watch." Kivrin is an bright undergraduate who's eager to travel back to the early 14th century; Mr. Dunworthy is a volunteer tutor from another college who has very grave reservations about the whole project, largely because the colleague in charge is pompous and arrogant and has no idea what he's doing. But Kivrin goes through the "net"a few days before Christmas (there are ingenious reasons for the timing) -- and there the story abruptly bifurcates to become two exciting and appalling parallel plotlines with numerous points and characters in common. Kivrin, though she's had all her inoculations, is very ill when she arrives and is nursed back to health by a priest and the family of a minor knight who is away on legal business. Back in Oxford, the same disease strikes down the technician who sent Kivrin on her way, and the people he was in contact with begin dropping like flies. The world has already barely survived one pandemic a generation or two before (thirty million deaths just in the U.S., someone mentions) and the quarantine barriers are up almost immediately. Dunworthy's good friend, Dr. Mary Ahrens, takes charge and quickly has her hands full; her visiting great-nephew, Colin, provides much of the comic relief in Willis's dry style. About those parallels: Kivrin in her time and Dr. Ahrens in hers provide the medical expertise, such as it is, while Dunworthy and Kivrin's friend, Father Roche, follow orders and lend a hand. Even Colin has a parallel in the two young girls whom Kivrin takes in charge. Even God has a role in both centuries -- and not to forget the ancient bell tower and the modern bell-ringers from America. Willis is extremely skilled at making you care about her characters and you'll feel a pang when things begin to happen to them. There's comedy here to leaven the tragedy, just like real life. This is a book to re-read every few years, more for the fiction than for the science.
More About People Than Time Travel.......2007-06-15
Though set in a story about scientifically motivated time travel, this is actually a presentation of human beings: their foibles, nobility, fears and hopes. The people in this tale all bear the stamp of authentic characters--none are cartoonish, though closest to it would be the egotistical director of the time-travel project. Ms. Willis describes the time and place of the Middle Ages during the Black Death with as much facility as she does in spinning out the actions of her characters in the modern/contemporary era.
I came to very much care about the two main characters--the researcher caught by miscalculation and circumstance in a time of pestilence and peril, and the village priest she grew to admire and love. The great satisfaction of this sad but also ennobling tale flows from the deft portrayal of the characters, and the resultant believability of their behavior and sentiments.
