Book Description

The atonement is the crown jewel of Christian doctrine. And it is the responsibility of each generation of theologians to preserve its heritage, explore its facets and allow its radiance to illumine their day. With The Glory of the Atonement editors Charles E. Hill and Frank A. James III, along with a group of expert contributors, attempt to fulfill this trust at the dawn of a new millennium. The Glory of the Atonement is divided into three parts--biblical, historical and practical--with each section introduced by an overview essay. In part one evangelical biblical scholars explore the atonement within the contours of Scripture, looking first at the atonement in the Pentateuch, Psalm 51 and Isaiah 53, and then more closely at the major texts of the New Testament. In part two historical and systematic theologians weigh the atonement in the ancient, medieval and Reformation traditions. The primary perspective of the contributors is the Reformed tradition, which is further represented by essays on John Calvin, Herman Bavinck and Karl Barth. A timely capstone to this historical view is a stimulating consideration of the atonement and postmodernism. Finally, the implications of the atonement are brought home in part three with a look at the atonement in contemporary preaching and Christian living. Here is a full-course feast for ministers of the Word, a textbook for students of the Bible and theology, and a valuable resource for any theological library.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, but Regretably Incomplete.......2004-08-02

This is a tough book for me to review. I have tremendous respect for the two editors of this book, as well as for Roger Nicole, the scholar whom this book is dedicated to. I believe they have assembled an impressive group of scholars here who have given us a very good book. But as I will note below, there are simply too many relevant gaps in the coverage of the Atonement in this book to warrant a 5 star rating.

Hill and James have assembled a formidable collection of scholars to provide contributions to this work, and the quality of their scholarship is not in question in their contributions here. Many of the articles are very substantive and rigorous. One major strength of the book is that many of the articles contain thorough and rigorous exegetical analysis, though unfortunately, not all of the pertinent articles do as will be discussed below. This is not really a beginner level book, though someone unfamiliar with Greek and Hebrew can still profit from many of the articles. For those who have a working knowledge of the Biblical languages, they will find many of the articles to be quite rigorous and exegetically satisfying. Carson, Hill, and Nicole in particular all deliver quality articles in this area.

Another strength of the book is its historical analysis. This is where readers will find the best article in the book, in my view. Vanhoozer's analysis of the atonement in light of postmodern thought and theology is simply outstanding. It alone justifies purchasing the book. But further, the article pertaining to Bavinck's atonement theology is also quite good, and for those looking for something especially complicated but provocative, McCormack's discussion of Barthian approaches to the atonement is also heavyweight reading.

The last section of the book deals with mainly pastoral concerns relating to atonement theology. Ferguson's article is quite good, as expected, and makes the whole book a very good gift idea for the reader's pastor.

Having said all that, I must point out some notable deficiencies that compel me to a 4 star rating. My problems with the book do not really pertain to what's covered, but what isn't covered in the book. The New Perspective is only marginally addressed, mainly by Carson's essay, and even here, it is not really addressed head-on, and certainly not thoroughly. Further, the open theism phenomenon and its gutting of the atonement is really not addressed at all. Both of these omissions are quite serious, in my judgment. Both of these movements have gained a foothold in evangelical circles, and both are likely here to stay to some degree. It is most unfortunate that in a book that interacts in considerable length with scholars from long ago, scant attention is paid to these two major contemporary movements that both undo the atonement to the degree that they do. This is a major weakness of the book.

In addition, one will labor quite hard to find a solid defense of the Reformed understanding of the atonement in terms of the extent of the atonement. In particular, the essay that intends to address 1 John in general, and 1 John 2:2 in particular is quite poor. It is an essay that focuses on everything except the extent of the atonement, relegating discussion of this critical issue to a mere couple of paragraphs. Other essays also make passing mention of the extent of the atonement, but as best I could tell, none of the essays are devoted to thoroughly defending and articulating the Reformed understanding in this area. This oversight is quite amazing, and unfortunate.

So in summary, this book is a good effort that contains a number of very good and challenging contributions. It was clearly intended to present a positive perspective, instead of thoroughly critiquing dissenters. As such, while it is a valuable resource that should be purchased and perused, the reader will likely find himself needing to supplement this book with other works in order to fill in the sizable gaps one finds in here.

Book Description

Once, twice, ten times a bridesmaid!

I, Dana Rose, do solemnly swear to say "I won't" the next time someone asks me to be in their wedding party. My weak will has gained me a closet full of unflattering bridesmaids' dresses in various sizes to accommodate my ever-fluctuating waistline.

As if that isn't enough, the past is paying me a most unwelcome visit (my prodigal brother, my back-stabbing sis). Then there's Mr. Practically Perfect, the ex who not only married someone else, but opened the business of our dreams -- right across from my new shop! It's no wonder I've got problems! I'm thankful I've got my friends, the Sassy Sisterhood, to rely on . . .

The Sassy Sisterhood:
They get by with a little help from their friends.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2007-02-18

This book was certainly full of drama!! All of the characters had issues they needed to overcome, and they found the strength to overcome their problems through the glory of God. When Dana loses her job, she opens a shop that caters to future brides and other women who want to feel their best! In the meantime, her beloved ex-boyfriend, Adrian, opens a shop, right across the street from hers! And to make matters worse, it's a shop he opened with his now-deceased wife....a shop that both Adrian and Dana dreamed about opening together, and of course that didn't happen when Adrian ended up marrying somebody else!

Then there's Dana's sister, Dahlia. The two sisters are estranged since Dahlia has now shacked up with Trevor, another one of Dana's ex's. And Dahlia also has her eyes set upon Adrian. The two sisters try to work out their problems throughout the scope of the story.

Also, Dana is tired of being a bridesmaid. She's got about ten bridesmaid dresses lined up in her closet, and she wonders if she'll ever be a bride. She's saddened that her childhood sweetheart married somebody else, and now that his wife is dead, he's back in town, trying to woo her. She's not sure if she really wants to be with him and she talks about her feelings with her best friends. The sassy sisters are close, and they try to motivate each other through motivational postings over the internet.

Then there's Dana's brother, who's come back into town after being gone for a gazillion years. Dana and the rest of her family, knew he was playing sports for some time, but then he disappeared. They are stunned to find out he's been in a coma for the last four(?) years and has just awakened a short time ago.

Then there's Dana's father who has a problem with booze, but finds solace in cooking for his family.

This book was filled with a cast of characters who needed the Lord, or if they were saved, needed to be closer to Him and hear His voice about their problems. When Dana suffers from a traumatic experience, her faith is strengthened as she recovers and decides to have a ceremony, renewing her solid relationship to God. Griffith does an awesome job of showing how people with problems and issues can come to know the Lord.

Also, I loved her descriptions. I almost wanted to eat the facials, soaps, and lotions she describes! Dana makes batches of vanilla lotion, lemon poundcake facials, strawberry beauty products, apple cobbler soap, etc. She uses fresh ingredients, and when she describes the scents of her products, and the scents of Adrian's candles, I wanted to pull up a chair and grab a plate and eat! I know that sounds weird but her descriptions made my mouth water, even though she was describing the luscious scents as a part of beauty products and candles!

3 out of 5 stars Froo-froo shee-shee on a Harley?????!!!!!.......2006-12-30

Froo-froo shee-shee Bath Product Making/Wedding Hating Chick reunites with down-to-earth Candle Making/Widower Dude from her not-so-romantic past & the bubbles & the sparks & the bridal bouquets fly as everyone's collective pasts come back to haunt them ALL with a vengeance ...

Me? I don't do weddings. At all. Don't like them. Don't wanna like them. Don't wanna look at them. Don't wanna listen to people talk about them. Don't wanna plan them. Don't wanna attend them. Nothing. I don't even want to be in MY OWN wedding -- ever.

So I could totally relate to the main character in THAT way, but, sheesh. Give me a break. How could someone who hates weddings so much spend so much time GOING to them & BEING in them, etc.? I wouldn't do it, & so I had a hard time feeling sorry for her &/or believing that she was really sincere. Rather, I was getting an extremely strong methinks-she-doth-protest-too-much vibe & especially since she was into all that girly stuff like bath products & what-have-you -- and the Harley thing? Now THAT came right out of left field. I didn't buy it for a second.

That said, & though the grandiose overdose of drama was exhausting to wade through & I thought the love interest turned out to be quite the dreamboat (read: too good to be true), I am SO glad that "Made Of Honor" was a Christian novel, or I might not have made it to the best part of the novel (for me):

"You and I both skipped from sinner to superservant because of the expectations of others. There are a lot more pieces to the journey. Just let Him carry you right now."

Now that was:

5 out of 5 stars Made of Honor.......2006-10-12

What do an estranged brother, a backstabbing sister, and a childhood buddy have in common? In some way, they have all hurt Miss Dana Rose, the main character of Marilynn Griffith's novel, Made of Honor.

A Christian woman, Dana has become embittered by life's circumstances. One of Dana's struggles is with relationships. For one, although Dana has been in numerous weddings as a bridesmaid, (but never a bride), the whole concept of marriage has left a bad taste in her mouth. Why? What is it about weddings, dresses, and men that enrage Dana so much?

Not to mention, Dana's world comes crashing down when she loses her job. Where will she go? Who will help her get back on her feet?

Meanwhile, Dana's brother, Jordan comes back after being away for years, and leaving behind a son whom Dana has helped to raise. Also, Dahlia, who is far from a beautiful flower, is Dana's confused and shady sister. She comes back to town with a surprise bombshell.

What else could happen to Dana? One name, "Adrian." This man is Dana's past, present, and well... He decides to put his business near Dana's place of employment. "Why?" wonders Dana.

Does Adrian still care for Dana after marrying another woman instead of Dana? How does Dana really feel about Adrian?

There are so many questions in Dana's mind that need to be answered.

Marilynn Griffith's writing style is comical and light-hearted, yet realistic. She brings serious issues to the surface such as betrayal, friendships, baby-mama drama, alcoholism, and ultimately the power of God's restoring love and grace.

Made of Honor proves that God is able to correct problems and bring healing to every broken heart and relationship.

Great job, Mrs. Griffith!

2 out of 5 stars Kept me wanting more.......2006-08-31

I really appreciate an author who writes nice, clean Christian Literature but that doesn't mean it has to be BBBOOOORRRRIIIINNNGGG! This book is way too long, way too drawn out, and the story is way too boring. I really think the first chapter is the worse, because that is usually when the author tries to draw you in on an interesting storyline, but this book failed to do that. The first chapter is a long, drawn out wedding reception discussing boring topics like punch and an ill-fitting bridesmaid gown. I thought if I read another description of this infamous punch I would scream! I usually finish all of my books in one day. I had to MAKE myself read this book. Like it was a job or something. Some parts kept my attention, but others had me dreaming of a Latte so I could stay up to finish the book. I think the author is a great writer in terms of describing setting and the book was edited well, but I just think that it could have been "More." I won't give up yet though, I will see if the author's clean writing style, which I really admire, can keep me focused and interested with the next book. I don't give up easily, especially when I think an author has great potential!

4 out of 5 stars Review for Return to Hawk's Hill.......2003-10-20

Return to Hawk's Hill by Alan W. Eckert is one of my favorite books. I think this book can be read or listened to by all ages. The book tells the story through the eyes of the family, Ben and the villagers. While reading the book, you will find yourself comparing what they did in a certain situation with what you would have done. The main theme is the conflict of what people think of others when they act, talk and do things you find are strange.
The story begins with Ben's brother and sisters going home and thinking of what had happened before (read Incident at Hawk 's Hill to understand) when George Burton shows up. Ben feeling like an animal caught runs..., finds a boat..., is found by an Indian boy and brought back to the Indian boy's village, fills fear, lonely and then love. Return to Hawk's Hill is a book you can't stop reading until it's done.

4 out of 5 stars Return to Hawk's Hill.......2002-03-04

I chose to read this book.... I was looking for a novel that seemed interesting. I also wanted to read a book with a different genre from most of the other books I've read...
The main character in this story is a young boy named Ben Mac Donald. Ben Mac Donald has two older sisters,... . and one older brother. Ben is the youngest of the four and also the quietest. He seems to be on the reserved side and it seems like he enjoys being home alone, and keeping to himself. Ben is also fascinated with nature, and loves to go and frolic with the wildlife on the prairie. At one point in the story, Ben even stays with a mother badger in her den...
I really enjoyed this book and I found it very interesting. I love the adventures that he goes on. Sometimes the adventures he goes on are to save the lives of others, other times it's to get away with his own. I give this book a score of 4+/5-; because the book just pulled me in I couldn't put it down. I really enjoy adventures both in books and in real life, and this book had plenty of adventures to keep me reading. I hope to read the next volume of this book series titled Incident at Hawk's Hill and experience more heart racing adventures that Ben Mac Donald goes on. Hopefully, none too dangerous though.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK!.......2000-06-04

This sequal to Incident at Hawk's Hill was a great book. It was nice to find out that Ben MacDonold did well in school. When the familie's adventure starts, they didn't know that it would lead to a friendship with indians. This book was full of incredible suspense and action.

      Book Description

As the government of South Vietnam was collapsing and communist troops were closing in, American diplomat Francis Terry McNamara led more than 300 Americans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos down a tributary of the Mekong River to safety. This is his dramatic true account of leadership, courage, and commitment.

      4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-08-14

This book peaked my curiosity because my brother was one of the marines stationed at this particular embassy in Vietnam. he's only mentioned in it twice by name but it was great learning about what the had to do to get out. Now my brother had never talked about it but recently mentioned it (briefly) at a family dinner and I did my own research. He did end up with a 22 year career and retired as a sgt major. some of the ook is really technical because its told by the ambassador but its a decent read.

      4 out of 5 stars A risky escape........2002-12-31

This is a detailed account of the U.S. consul's last months in Can Tho, South Vietnam and his risky escape by boat on the Mekong River in April 1975. As the collapse of Saigon was nearing and as the airlift of Americans and third country nationals from Can Tho never materialized, McNamara himself took charge of guiding more than 300 people to safety on military barges along the Mekong River. He was recognized for his bravery and given a medal in 1977.

The book was also a tribute to General Nguyen Khoa Nam, the IV Corps South Vietnamese commander who refused to be evacuated and remained at his post until the last minute. McNamara had known him for over a year as a brave and dedicated officer and a man of honor. General Nam and his deputy General Hung killed themselves instead of surrendering to the enemy a few days later.

This is an interesting perspective of an American's last weeks in South Vietnam, his dealings with the Americans, the Vietnamese, and the CIA.

      5 out of 5 stars A riveting book about a true story--reads like a movie!.......1999-06-14

During every great event there occurs little-known tales of heroism and sacrifice; Ambasador McNamara's book tells the story on one of them. The evacuation of the handful of American civilians and Marines of the U.S. Consulate General in Can Tho, along with their South Vietnamese employees and families, reads like a movie, and is all the more exciting for being true. Their story of sacrifice, heroism, betrayal, and tragedy was lost in the greater story of the simultaneous evacuation of Saigon, but one with a historical bent will see in McNamara's tale a reflection of Xenephon's Persian expedition. Don't start reading this one before bedtime, or you'll be up all night to finish it!

5 out of 5 stars Positive and uplifting........1997-11-20

In a time of uncertainty, danger and demoralization, this is a story that shows that even in the midst of the end of the Vietnam war our few remaining Americans cared deeply about the people that they had supported. A story of heroism generally not recognized and long overdue in the telling.

      4 out of 5 stars WW2 -SOUTH AMERICAN ACTION........2006-08-01

WEB Griffin fills a gap in my military history of actions outside the main combat arenas. He obviously researches thoroughly and the result is gripping all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Story Well Told.......2005-06-20

Honor Bound captures your attention at the start and never lets go. While there is not really a lot of "action," the story, the settings and the character development all make for an excellent book.

The story is the recruitment and development of an OSS team to carry out a secret mission to disrupt German submarine activity in neutral Argentina during WWII. The sub story is the reconnection of a powerful Argentine father and his American son who have not seen each other since the son was an infant. Several other sub stories are also woven in. All are interesting and well told.

The primary setting is WWII Buenos Aires. Most of us are unaware of the atmosphere there during the war, so that makes for a good learning experience. Other settings include Guadacanal, Midland (Texas) and New Orleans. All add interest to the story.

Griffen also does an excellent job of developing his characters. The primary ones really come to life.

If you are looking for "shoot 'em up" action, this book is not for you. If you are looking for a fascinating book about an arena that you probably know little about, give this a try. I am pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent, Captivating, Rich, and Wonderful! SCORE: (A+).......2003-12-26

The book set in WWII Argentina, "Honor Bound" is a great historical fiction of the WWII espionage game, coupled with an intense and dynamic story line. Cletus Frade, is a magnificent hero who has intensity, likeability, and charm. The secondary characters are richly developed and are as interesting in many cases as the hero. This story wraps you up in the characters, make you care about them, and takes you on a wonderful journey that ends way too soon, thankfully there are two more books in the series.
This is the best W.E.B. Griffin book yet in my opinion, and one of the most enjoyable books that I have ever had the pleasure of reading!

5 out of 5 stars Bound with Honor.......2002-05-29

Shipped home from the Pacific, Cletus Frade learns that he will be sent to Argentina to aid in the war effort against the Nazis. He and two other Americans are sent to Argentina to sink a Nazi ship refueling and rearming German U-boats. In Argentina Cletus meets his long lost father, a very important man in Argentina and tries to sway him toward the United States. During the course of his mission Frade comes upon many problems, falls in love and builds a strong relationship with his father.
I recommend this book very highly. This book never had a dull moment. This is the second book of W.E.B. Griffin that I have read and I enjoyed both of them. This book takes place during World War Two and contains a lot of real to the time's technology and information. Griffin obviously spent a great deal of time researching before he wrote this book. It pays off. The quality of the story is greatly enhanced by the use of factual information. Of the many books in this genre that I have read this is one of the better ones. The story line drives along at a steady action packed pace. Though this book is projected more towards the middle-aged male demographic, I think that anyone who enjoys espionage, romance, anyone interested in World War Two or anyone who enjoys fiction would greatly enjoy reading this book. This is a great book and I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Character Building into a Magnificent Nove.......2001-09-23

Griffith is well known for his military books that have real characters doing unreal things that make the entire novel a real story of unreal quality. Ok just a confusing enough sentence to make you read more. Griffith is such a writer that his characters are what carries the story; meaning the reader wants to know how the characters are going to develop in the situations. Cletus Frade is akin to another of WEB's great characters...Craig Lowell.

Perhaps one of my favorite authors with books that allow for countless rereads.

1 out of 5 stars The Murderers es un rollo.......2002-12-15

I have never read a worse book than The Murderers. The back tells of "4 seemingly unconnected murders" and that's what it delivers. Unconnected, diluted, boring, crappy dialogue. I wasted a lot of time reading this book. I advise you all not to do the same. Never in my life has a book gone so quickly from my hand to the waste basket than did the epic novel The Murderers. Que rollo.

      4 out of 5 stars The Murderers.......1999-11-30

WEB Griffin has done it again. His characters have continued to grow and interest the readers. I definitely recommend this if you are a fan of any of his series of novels. If you like the Men in Blue series, check out the Brotherhood of War and the Corps.

      1 out of 5 stars It's all a soap opera........1998-09-23

In short, what looked like a detective novel with who dunnits and good guys and bad guys, it is not.

I never fully got an idea of who was who in here. And when I did Griffin kept adding more and more people to the story rather than just using those we already met.

The bottom line is that the murder is none of the people you would suspect, BUT is introduced in almost the last chapter and is out of the blue introduced. In short, I wasted a lot of time reading this book and would like to tell you that you should avoid this.

      Read the TWO GERORGES instead.
