SILENT NO MORE; Confronting America's False Images of Islam

In his recently released book Silent No More: Confronting America's False Images of Islam, Paul Findley, a 22-year veteran of Congress, chronicles his long, far-flung trail of discovery through the World Of Islam: the false stereotypes that linger in the minds of the American people, the corrective actions that the leaders of America's seven million Muslims are undertaking, and the community's remarkable progress in mainstream politics.

It is an indispensable source for Muslims and for anyone who speaks, writes, or worries about human rights, interfaith harmony and global cooperation. With precise citations, Findley, a Christian, debunks in his narration, the stereotypes of Islam. The author of four other books, two of them on the Arab-Israeli conflict, Findley draws on his decade-long experience as the senior Republican on the House of Representatives subcommittee on the Middle East, his personal knowledge of the region and its leaders, as well as his nationwide acquaintance with U.S. Muslims.

He writes: “Most Americans have never read a verse from the Qur'an, nor met a person they knew to be Muslim. Their distorted images of Islam come from snippets of television news and headlines that falsely link Islam with terrorism and the degradation of women. They have no awareness of Islamic principles and beliefs—monotheism, peace, charity, compassion, interfaith tolerance, women's rights—common principles that should bind Muslims, Christians, and Jews together.” The book is published by Amana Publications and is available from the publisher or the main bookstores such as Amazon.com, Barnes and Nobles and Borders.

Quotes from Silent No More: The partisan arena: “After being quietly on the sidelines for years, [Muslims] are gaining prominence in government and demonstrating skill in politics. They are getting elected to public office, helping other candidates win, providing leadership in political party and government policy activities, and establishing a presence in the judicial branch of government.” [See page 221]

Bloc voting success: In November 7, 2000 presidential voting, “Muslims were the main new political element in Florida, whose twenty-five electoral votes finally settled the outcome of one of the most protracted presidential contests in history…. Bush benefited substantially from Muslim bloc voting. Florida Muslims provided him with a net margin that exceeded 60,000 votes, sixty times his winning margin.” [See pages 268-269]

“Muslim bloc voting brought about a major alteration of the American political landscape…. During the year, over seven hundred Muslims sought election as candidates…. One hundred and fifty-two were victorious…. In major political campaigns of the future, every serious contender for a major office will seek an interview with Muslim leaders. As Albert Gore lists errors in his presidential campaign, his failure to reschedule his cancelled date with [national Muslim] leaders may head the list.” [See pages 271-272]

“The Muslims who are engaged in organizational and public policy activities have made impressive strides in interfaith understanding, but they constitute only a small fraction of Islam's community in America.” [See page 218] Findley's advice to Muslims: “They must defend their faith aggressively and publicly against misconceptions and misrepresentations, especially those expressed by professed Muslims. Muslims should identify themselves publicly with Islam and seek ways to present the truth about their faith to non-Muslims…. Muslims can display their religious affiliation modestly but effectively by wearing a lapel pin, necklace, or ring that displays the word Allah, star-and-crescent, or some other visible linkage with Islam. [As a result of this display] their own good behavior and worthy accomplishments will be identified with Islam.” [See pages 282-284] “At present, television audi

5 out of 5 stars Muslims and America........2006-09-01

"Silent No More" depicts the reactions of Muslims in America, a natural reponse to the actions and prejudices of American administration in the form of Patriot Act. American concept of Islam is based on the reactionary activities of Muslims' behavior and consequently the false image presented by the news media. American people know Muslims as presented in the media and not by the historical truth of Islam in the religious literature. When we talk of Islam, we actually talk of Muslim behavior. And the Muslim behavior must be studied in the same manner as we study the behavior of other freedom fighters, known by their states and governments as terrorist. The book, in my opinion, is a helpful roadmap for American Muslims to get a significant place in the political and social life of America.

Another Islamic Puppet, a typical American ignorant, manipulated by Islamists and Muslims, who used by Muslims and criminals alike, forwards the Islamic heinous agenda against all infidels, in order to take over the western civilization, its culture and obviously financial assets.
Another corrupted congressman or simply a poor thing who doesn't know the evil satanic monster, it is being manipulated by.
Republican , sure - )))))))

"Those who stay in America should be open to society without melting, keeping Mosques open so anyone can come and learn about Islam. If you choose to live here, you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam ...
Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faiths, but to become dominant. The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth."

This book does not explain how an Imam from England can say,

'If Allah tells me to condemn terrorism, I will condemn terrorism"!

This book does not explain that while not all Muslims are terrorist, most terrorist are Muslims!

This book truly is trying to lull Americans into a false since of Security.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking the misconception!.......2006-01-09

Mr. Findley has done an excellent job in writing this book. He does confront the false images that one has of Islam. I love the way he showed how he himself was raised with such a lack of correct understantding of the Muslim faith to how his interactions with other Muslims changed his perceptions. Obviously this book will not address all the misconceptions that people have of Islam. This however is a very nice approach. There are other great book which discuss about Islam such as books by Yahiya Emerick, or Hamza Yusuf. This book is a great first step that one can take to have a correct understanding of this beautiful faith which most of us despise because of our ignorance.

1 out of 5 stars Half Way There.......2007-02-23

I was half expecting from the author's history to read a book filled with half truths. The author only managed to drag himself half way there. I'd say at best him manages 1/4 truths. Save your money, unless you need to exercise your neck muscles. You'll be shaking your head quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars excellent read.......2007-01-11

Pastor Rod truly shares his passion for the moral clarity of this great nation. UNfortunately main stream media and liberal thoughts have polluted our nation. Good read even for the non-Christian, very thought provoking and not just a bunch of unproven facts or ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read For Solving Tough Issues!.......2006-10-07

Rod Parsley is not your normal everyday preacher but that is the way I like him. He doesn't dodge the tough issues. He tells them like they are. I especially like the abundant resources he offers at the end of each chapter. This book is a wake-up call for America! We need to take action before it is too late! We need more people like Rod Parsley. I pray with God's help we can turn this nation around and get out of the moral sewer we are in.

The final pages of the book hit me personally as Rod's wife told her story of her miscarriage. My wife and I could relate to her tragedy as we have experienced that tragedy more than once. That made the entire reading of this book worth it!

1 out of 5 stars Rod Parsley Money Grubbing Liar and Thief.......2006-09-28

Anyone with the most basic understanding of the bible and Christs principles can quickly recognize what Rod Parsley is about.

Mr. Parsley is all about the money, money going to his pocket. He lives a lavish life.

His marriage counceling often leads to you having to many possessions. To save your marriage give everything to the church.

He lives a lavish life and spends most all of his energy raising money. This is the opposite of what we are taught by Christ.

LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND SHAMELESS

Regarding Parsley's personal holdings, the Columbus Monthly magazine further discloses:

"Parsley, his wife, Joni, and their two young children live in a five-bedroom house they have built next to his parents' house on a 21-acre compound in northwest Fairfield County. The compound has an electronic gate at the road to discourage uninvited visitors, and stables and a corral have been built in one corner. Rod Parsley's home is worth $857,090, say records at the Fairfield County recorder's office. His parents' home, also new, is valued at $831,480. Each was built with a $200,000 mortgage taken out in 1990. ... Parsley also owns a $500,000 jet, a seven-passenger Hawker Siddeley 125."17

Show good judgement avoid this rich young ruler.

1 out of 5 stars ALLAH Is Al-Waduud, The Loving !.......2006-02-15

In the Name of ALLAH, The Compassionate, The Merciful

ALLAH is Al-Waduud, The Loving !

Rod Parsley writes, emphatically on page 113 of his book "Remember this statement: there are ninety-names for ALLAH in Islam. Not one of them is love."

Mr. Parsley utters many scathing falsehoods, half truths and obvious lies about ALLAH and ALLAH's Religion which is indeed Islam. However, Mr. Parsley cannot harm ALLAH in the least with his deceptions.

In fact on page 117 of his book, listed under ACTION POINTS, Mr. Parsley, by ALLAH's permission, ultimately is himself calling people to ALLAH when he encourages them to : "Be informed about how Islam started and what it stands for" and to "Prayerfully read the Quran for yourself to understand the deception it contains."

Many who read the Qur'an will be guided by ALLAH to become Muslims (Submitting Ones) while many others will reject the guidance. Either way, all Praise belongs to ALLAH ! Ameen.

For those who heed the call, and are Blessed to be Guided by ALLAH when they read the Qur'an, they will discover that in Truth one of ALLAH's names is Al-Waduud, The Loving [read Qur'an, Chapter 85, Verse 14, and Chapter 11, Verse 90]. ALLAH indeed is The Loving. HE is Most Loving and the Eternal Source from which all Love and Goodness springs.

In fact consistent with the Bible: Deuteronomy 6:4-7 and Mark 12:29-30, to Love ALLAH, WHO is ONE, with all of our might, and also to be Loved by ALLAH, are themes which are repeated, time and time again, throughout the Qur'an.

In the Service of ALLAH, in Submission to the Will of ALLAH. Ameen.

    Book Description

The dramatic chronicle of the Soviet Jewry movement in its full historical context, highlighting the significant effort of the American Jews to extricate the Jewish community from the Kremlin's grasp.

Leading scholar and author of the celebrated five-volume series, The Jewish People in America, Henry L. Feingold offers a fresh and inspiring look at the Russian/Soviet Jewish emigration phenomenon. Haunted by its sense of failure during the Holocaust, the Soviet Jewry movement set for itself an almost unrealizable goal of finding sanctuary for Jews from a hostile Soviet government. Working together with activists in Israel and Europe, and with a remarkable group of refuseniks that had been denied the right to emigrate, this courageous group mounted a relentless campaign lasting almost three decades. Although Feingold credits Israel with initiating the struggle for Soviet Jewry and fostering it within American Jewry, he maintains that it was the actions of a secure and confident American Jewry that finally delivered the Jews from the Soviet Union.

Feingold's mastery of detail and broadness of scope provide a prodigious and sweeping account of the American Jewish movement. He finds early roots of the effort in the American Jewish involvement with Jewish emigration in late Tsarist Russia. He highlights both the human dimension of the exodus and the complex international ramifications of the movement, especially in the Middle East. "Silent No More" concludes by pondering the role of the movement's effective public relations campaign, which focused on the human right of freedom of movement in hastening the collapse of the Soviet empire.

Feingold's rigorous scholarship sheds light on an important, yet rarely told episode in history, one that will enliven further examination of the subject. This book will be of interest to scholars of American Jewish history, the cold war, Israeli studies, and American ethnic and immigration history.

I own a copy of this book printed in the 80's. I assumed the new edition would have updated statistics. Unfortinately its just a reprint, not really a new edition.

The book is powerful but the stats need to be updated.

I'm grateful to David Reardon for collecting these stories. For those of us who unexpectedly suffer significant emotional distress or even trauma after abortion, it is such a relief to realize that we are not alone and not crazy. When I came across this book, it broke down my isolation and gave me hope for healing. I looked around for other resources to help me pursue that healing and have been incredibly grateful to find them. For me, knowing that other women also suffered was a vital first step toward recovery.

2 out of 5 stars The Art of Subtle Propaganda.......1999-11-24

One must read a few chapters of "Aborted Women: Silent No More" before realizing that despite its seemingly non-judgemental title, this book continues to force subtle pro-life propaganda on its audience. As a woman and feminist who has experienced abortion, I wholeheartedly agree that most women who undergo abortions suffer long-term emotional trauma as a result; this experience and suffering deserves to be given a voice and should not be denied or overlooked in order to further either side of the political debate. However, Mr. Reardon's use of the personal histories of women who have all since come to believe that what they did was bad and wrong, become pro-life advocates, and found solice in the Lord seems disgustingly biased. What of women, like myself and the many aborted women I know, who do suffer emotional trauma, but continue to believe in freedom of choice? The personal histories which Mr. Reardon utilizes are immeasurably valuable as testimonies of the abortion experience - but they are of a limited and obviously-slanted perspective. Mr. Reardon's book is full of useful statistical and factual information about the overall abortion experience, but these too are explained in a clearly "I told you how evil it was" tone. Is it so impossible for one to honor the voice of these women who have made the decision to abort without forcing religious or political propaganda down the throats of readers? Abortion may never be out of the public eye - and it is its presence in the public eye that has allowed it to become a political and religious issue. At its heart, however, it is a personal issue - the personal decision of every woman who is ever pregnant and does not immediately know that she will carry the child to term - whether she eventually does abort or not. This book is a useful example of the manipulation of women's stories for the sake of the greater pro-life cause, but it is difficult to read with any level of comfort if you don't already subscribe to that rhetoric.

5 out of 5 stars Shocking and Insightful.......1999-01-17

This is an invaluable book for anyone interested in the abortion issue. It details the very real emotional and physical fallout of elective abortion, and features the strained voices of women victimized by what our society calls "safe, legal abortion." Abuses against the poor and women of color are particulary distressing to read about. I hope every woman considering abortion will read this book first.

In the current restrictive educational atmosphere of high-stakes testing and narrowed, scripted curriculum, teachers' voices are often muted by bureaucratic mandates. The narratives in this collection, first-person accounts by teachers who had much to lose both professionally and personally, resound with courage, tenacity, and hope. Their combined stories create a frightening and compelling picture of "education as usual" in America.

ReLeah Cossett Lent and Gloria Pipkin are the perfect editors to prepare such a book, having told their own courageous story in the extraordinary account, At the Schoolhouse Gate. They know what is demanded of teachers each day and how the decisions made in boardrooms and legislative chambers have far-reaching, detrimental effects on those who have the least power: students. They have gathered the stories of dedicated, principled teachers whose costly stands on critical educational issues create a disturbing mosaic. This book may well change the way you view your own neighborhood school. Read about

I was totally impressed by this book. As an educator, it opened my eyes to how we don't have to act as a "doormat" for those of authority and that it is ok to stand up for what we believe in. I was amazed by some of the situations presented in this book and how people of a professional status can be treated by those who have no idea where we have been, or where we are lead to go. It is about the CHILDREN!!! These ladies have put together a book that shows just that. And if we believe in ourselves and our students--we should fight until the end.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book for All.......2005-09-06

I liked this book so much that after reading it in the library, I bought it on Amazon.com. I want my daughter (and son) to read it when they get older. After hearing so much pro-choice rhetoric EVERYWHERE, it is refreshing to read what I've always felt has been true in my heart. This book is pro-life FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD ABORTIONS, making it unique in my eyes. It mentions the physical and psychological risks of abortion, that are all too often glossed over by the pro-choice advocates. Even the hardest cases for abortion, like rape and incest are addressed with candor and compassion from women who've been there. This book covers the impact abortion has on later children and problems women have with infertility and the breast cancer link. This book does NOT sit in judgement of women who've had abortions. That's the beauty of it, too. It is rather a cautionary tale, a means of educating women (and men, too). There are other options. Women deserve better than to be rejected for being pregnant, and killing their unborn when they think there's no other "choices". This book is TRUE FEMINISM...it is the love of women in their most vulnerable state. "Mother and child are as one, and they cannot be separated without doing violence to both." (Truly feminism should be the love and acceptance of women for what nature intended them to be at some point in their lives...mothers.)
I must also mention that this book accurately paints abortion as the money-making industry that it is, not a sacrament meant for the betterment of womankind.
I hope an expanded, newer edition comes out. I'll buy that, too.

    Book Description

As the third of nine children in a tight-knit Catholic family, author E.M. Stoddard learns how to be resilient early in life. Although her childhood has many happy memories, Stoddard is determined not to re-live her mother's life-burdened with too much responsibility and dependent on an emotionally distant husband.

Soon after her high school graduation, Stoddard marries her boyfriend Patrick, whose personal problems begin to cause trouble for the couple almost immediately. As the years go by, Patrick's behavior continues to deteriorate, and divorce becomes the only logical choice.

After the dissolution of her marriage, Stoddard's life changes dramatically. With the responsibilities of a new job, a mortgage, and most importantly, her nine-year-old son, Matt, Stoddard can't rely on her ex-husband to provide support. She has to do it on her own.

Since her new position requires extensive travel, Stoddard decides that live-in help is an absolute necessity. But finding a trustworthy, dependable nanny becomes an educational experience as she hires a total of seven individuals over the next few years, most with qualities that make them less-than-ideal child care providers.

Mom's the Word: A Memoir of Love and Survival tells the inspiring and often humorous story of Stoddard's experiences as she, her son and their fat beagle survive the craziness, heartache, fear, joy, and personal growth that come with life's challenges.

"From a working single mother, a colorful account of the struggles and triumphs of raising her son while maintaining her sanity. The generally sophisticated and congenial prose style and anecdotal structure make for a pleasant read." -Kirkus Discoveries

    5 out of 5 stars A life well lived.......2007-04-24

When I first investigated E.M. Stoddard's "Mom's the Word: Silent No More," I suspected it was the sort of book that would appeal more to women than men. It's easy to understand why I thought so: there is a heavy emphasis on describing the trials and travails of finding a suitable nanny for the author's young son. Invoking images of "The Nanny Diaries" and other books that deal with similar themes, i.e. the tension that inevitably arises between a family and their hired help, doesn't really sound like the sort of book I would be interested in. I was wrong. Stoddard's book goes far beyond nannies run amok. "Mom's the Word" is actually a memoir. It's an examination of a difficult life lived to the fullest, a book that describes one woman's experiences growing up in a family with eight siblings, dealing with seven different nannies in about as many years, surviving a fat beagle, and going through the anguish of living and divorcing an alcoholic husband. Moreover, many of the events take place while Stoddard works a full-time job that requires her to travel around the globe. It should go without saying that this memoir covers a lot of ground.

The first part of the book concerns Stoddard's tumultuous upbringing in Boston, Massachusetts, her marriage, and her reemergence as a single working mother. How could her childhood and adolescence be anything but tumultuous with eight brothers and sisters, a worry wart for a mother, and a colorful father who drinks a lot while working as an international fish buyer? Sit back and watch the hijinks unfold! Seriously, though, the author deals with everything from watching bar fights rage in the streets outside the family apartment to pulling teenage pranks with a mischievous friend. Nothing too outrageous happens, which is surprising considering the huge size of the family, but it's obvious that this chaotic upbringing put a bit of steel into the author's backbone. She needs it when she marries her husband Patrick, a man who would go on to a very successful career in advertising before sinking beneath waves of alcohol. Stoddard goes into great detail about the acrimonious divorce proceedings and her efforts to raise their son by herself. It is at this point that the nannies start marching across the stage. Seven of them in less than seven years. It's also the point where the fat beagle comes to the fore.

For those of us not wealthy enough or desperate enough to have to bring total strangers into our house to help raise our kids, Stoddard's descriptions of her various encounters with nannies are a bit of a shock. Despite her best efforts to check the backgrounds of these young people, she had to deal with a few frightening incidents. There was the nanny who showed up prim, proper, and uptight only to turn into a raging estrogen hurricane by the end of her tenure. Then there was another girl who showed up ready for a neverending party. This gal favored illegal substances and liked to hang around with drug dealers. Fun! We see nannies both calm and well mannered (one likes to just kick back and read books) and unbelievably obtuse (one who doesn't grasp the fundamental dynamics of an automobile, to cite just one hilarious example). Fortunately for the author, her son keeps her going through the tough times. So does Briggs, the family beagle. His legendary adventures--more like misadventures--revolve around food. He likes to raid local restaurants, steal food from neighbors, and eat so much on Thanksgiving that he literally can't move for hours afterwards. You'll laugh and you'll cry with this book.

For the most part, many of the things we read in "Mom's the Word" aren't that unusual. Nearly everyone could tell funny pet stories, or talk about growing up in an odd family. Single mothers having to work just to keep the house together aren't that rare of a sight nowadays, either. And who among us haven't pulled a few adolescent pranks? Stoddard's book isn't a unique view into the modern family, but there are a few things inside this story worth mentioning that set this life story apart. For example, as I read the book I marveled at the amount of traveling E.M. Stoddard undertook, first with her husband and later as a single mother. She actually had the opportunity to live in Japan for several years, and her anecdotes about life in the Land of the Rising Sun are extremely interesting to read about. Later on she had the opportunity to travel to other parts of Asia, Europe, and just about every place in between. As someone whose idea of a big trip is a jaunt out to Eastern Colorado, I appreciated seeing foreign lands described in such vivid detail. I feel like I'm really missing out on life after reading "Mom's the Word".

So there you have it. E.M. Stoddard's book is one part family drama, one part nanny madness, one part travelogue, and one part fat beagle gone crazy. I think most readers could find something of interest within these pages. As an aside, I'm continually surprised by many of these vanity press books. You'll read a few and think, "Ehh. I could've better spent my time reading something worthwhile," and then pick up another title and find out you've discovered the proverbial diamond in the rough (Or is that a needle in a haystack?). "Mom's the Word" is one of the diamonds. It's a little rough around the edges, and it needs a little polishing here and there, but the end result is something worth beholding. I'm going to give the book five stars. It's amusing, serious, insightful, and full of the joy of simply living one's life to the fullest. I wish more books had this sort of zest!
