Book Description

In the exclusive town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, where the sweetest smiles hide the darkest secrets, four pretty little liars—Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna—have been very bad girls. . . .

Spencer stole her sister's boyfriend. Aria is brokenhearted over her English teacher. Emily likes her new friend Maya . . . as much more than a friend. And Hanna's obsession with looking flawless is literally making her sick. But the most horrible secret of all is something so scandalous it could destroy their perfect little lives.

And someone named "A" is threatening to do just that.

At first they thought A was Alison, their friend who vanished three years ago . . . but then Alison turned up dead. So could A be Melissa, Spencer's ultracompetitive sister? Or Maya, who wants Emily all to herself? What about Toby, the mysterious guy who left town right after Alison went missing?

One thing's for certain: A's got the dirt to bury them all alive, and with every crumpled note, wicked IM, and vindictive text message A sends, the girls get a little closer to losing it all.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless: A Pretty Little Liars Novel.......2007-09-14

This book is even more suspenseful than the first one. In Pretty Little Liars, A shows up and she's nothing but a threat. Now, in Flawless, she's carrying out her threats. Nothing is going right for the Rosewood girls. Although, they are starting to have some clue as to who A is.

But are they right?

4 out of 5 stars Namebrands Everywhere.......2007-07-19

I thought the book was fantastic. Starting where "Pretty Little Liars" left off, it picks up the story of four girls, Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hanna, who share a terrible secret. The fifth girl who knew the secret, Ali, who was missing for years, has been found dead.

The girls are receiving text messages and IMs from "A.", who knows all their secrets, past and present. Does this mean Ali's actually alive? Or does someone else know what happened that fateful night?

You won't find out who A is in this book. What you will find is namebrand after namebrand, describing everything from the girls' cars to their clothes to their cigarettes. I found that to be a bit annoying, but I can get over it for a great story.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Little Liars #2 Does NOT disappoint the reader!.......2007-07-15

Pretty Little Liars #2: Flawless does NOT disappoint the reader! It is packed with more twists and turns keeping the reader guessing the identity of "A" all along the way. There are surprises that I did not anticipate.

The book is a good sequel to Pretty Little Liars #1! I can't wait for #3! This book is appropriate for high school aged girls. I do NOT recommend it for girls younger than high school due to some language and multiple references to sex.

4 out of 5 stars Suspenseful New Installment In A Great Series.......2007-06-22

FLAWLESS is a great guilty-pleasure novel, full of suspense and intrigue hidden behind the perfect masks worn by the inhabitants of the perfect town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania. It is also surprisingly deep.

In this continuation of the story begun in PRETTY LITTLE LIARS (DO read PLL first), Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily are still trying to keep their secrets hidden, even from each other, and discover the identity of "A." The page-turning suspense continues, and the mystery only deepens in this book.

The four girls are realistic enough characters, though they don't exactly jump off the page. The writing itself is not breathtaking, but not bad enough to distract from the heart-pounding suspense. In short, the actual writing of this book is mediocre, but the suspense is enough to keep readers hooked.

Book Two is at least as much fun as Book One.

In the exclusive Philadelphia suburb of Rosewood, Alison is the Queen Bee of her elite seventh grade hive. BFs Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily vie for her attention, even as each of them hides a hideous secret only Alison knows. So when Alison goes missing after a slumber party, never to be seen again, each girl is heartbroken, but also a little relieved. Now it is three years later, and though the four girls have grown apart, they are each still hiding something. Artsy Aria is carrying on an affair with one of her teachers, fashionista Hanna shoplifts to accessorize her trendy outfits, blue-blood Spencer is sleeping with her older sister's boyfriend, while straight-A Emily is trying to ignore her attraction to a new female classmate. When the girls begin receiving threatening text messages and emails that from someone known only as "A," they must confront the fact that against all odds, it appears Alison is back. Could Alison still be alive? And if so, why is she so determined to uncover all their dirty little secrets?

Debut author Sara Shepard's shamelessly addictive blend of Desperate Housewives and I Know What You Did Last Summer is absolutely delicious. Her infusion of mystery and murder breathes new life into the tired genre of high society chick lit, and will give fans of Gossip Girl and The A-List something new to dig their French-manicured nails into. A cliff-hanging ending will leave readers craving the second title in the planned four-part series. --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Gossip thrives amid the Mercedes-Benzes, mega mansions, and perfectly manicured hedges in the exclusive town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania. Behind their big Gucci sunglasses, beneath their perfectly pressed Polos, everyone has something to hide, especially high school juniors Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna. And Hanna is using some ugly tricks to stay beautiful. Deeper and darker still is a horrible secret the girls have shared since sixth grade—a secret they thought was safe forever.

Then the girls start receiving threatening messages signed by someone named "A." Could "A" be Alison, the ultra-popular girl who disappeared three years earlier? Alison was their best friend. She knew everything about them. But if Alison isn't "A," who is? And how could anyone else know so much about the bad girls they were and the bad girls they've become? Suddenly, their secrets—the big ones, the little ones, even the long-buried ones—no longer seem so secret. Suddenly, nothing is safe in Rosewood.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Little Liars.......2007-09-08

This was such a good book! I loved how I could sympathize for the characters, and the element of mystery... What happened to Alison? Who is A? Now I'm hooked, and I think I'm definitely going to enjoy reading this series.

5 out of 5 stars Liars abound.......2007-05-22

I did enjoy this book- very much. It's more grown-up than anything. The story arc is extending through the series. I can't wait to see what happens to the girls. Sara Sheperd has created an entire world of Rosewood, PA. The characters flow very well.

Each girl has a secret she's trying desperately to hide, and somebody named A seems to know about all about each of them. There's a high level of disfunction in each girl's family. Emily's real problem is parents who don't accept her very well and are trying to force her into mold of who they want her to be. If they did, I think her sexual idenity issues would be a lot easier to handle. Then, there's Aria- she's got the weight of the world on her shoulders- her true story arc is that she's covering up for an ugly family secret that could tear her family apart. Hanna is probably the most self-destructive of all the girls in the book- she's a klepto and she's eating disordered- and despite getting caught, her mother doesn't deal with it like a normal mother should, and tries to get her off the hook instead of making her deal with it. Plus, Hanna's single father has replaced her, sending her sense of self-esteem spiralling down, affecting all the relationships in her life. Spencer's hot-and-heavy affair with her sister's boyfriend turns ugly when it gets exposed to her family. They come down on her, instead of Wren for taking advantage of her (he must be, like 23!!!), and side with her sister. That storyline broke my heart. Spencer wasn't really a bad girl- just trying too hard to be perfect and her parents didn't appreciate that.

The biggest secret they're all keeping is The Jenna Thing. What is The Jenna Thing? Well, you'll just have to read Flawless to fidn out!!

5 out of 5 stars you won't want to put this one down!!!.......2007-05-05

Okay, I found out about this book from one of my freshmen. She brought it in one day and asked me if I could please read it, because she absolutely LOVED the book and needed someone to talk to about it....and said that her friends weren't really "into reading." I took the book home, thinking that I'd get around to it later.....maybe next week. Maybe not. I was wrong. I started reading when I got home and couldn't put the book down. You won't want to put it down either. It really IS that good.

Other reviews have basically told the story here: five friends are bound by a secret, referred to as "the Jenna thing," until one of the girls, Alison, goes missing at the end of their seventh grade year. Skip ahead to eleventh grade, when the remaining four girls begin receiving alarming text messages. It's a mystery that grabs you and won't let go.

I've seen several copies of this book (and #2 Flawless) floating around our school lately, thanks to word of mouth advertising. I'm 30something and LOVED the book...my students are 14-18 years old and also love it. Friendship, mystery, boys, all of the big topics pop up in this book. Grab a copy and get hooked!

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS & SUPER FRESH!!!!.......2007-04-26

This book is a wonderful story that bases upon a group of girls that are super flawless and they each hide a horrible secret underneath that sheer perfection. It all begins when one of their best friends, Ali dissapears into thin air and after years of searching for her body, they find her underneath her backyard. The mysterious text that the girls receive are intruiging and been titled from-A. The girls have no idea who it could be....Was it Ali from the dead? A Prank? The characters: Emily, Aria, Hanna, and Spencer, try to solve the mystery. The book leaves you hanging because it never says where Ali is or why she's been sending those texts. It's up to the next book, Flawless.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing book for teens.......2007-04-25

In Pretty Little Liars, the first book in the series, we begin three years ago on the evening of Alison DeLaurentis' disappearance from a sleepover with her four best friends. We are then launched into the not-so-pretty present in which Ali is still missing, her four best friends barely even acknowledge each other, and their lives are falling apart. Spencer struggles to stand out in her family, while Aria is trying to keep her family together and maintain an unlikely romance. Emily is trying to figure out how she feels about everyone, more specifically the new girl at school, and Hanna is facing difficulties with her boyfriend, the law, and remaining as goreous as she's become. But all four girls are facing one major problem: someone who goes by the initial A is threatening to tell their secrets and ruin them for good.
My favorite part occured whenever the girls recieved threats from A and had flashbacks. Everytime, you get a little more insight as to why the girls have become who they are and what they're trying to hide from everybody. You also want more clues as to who this mysterious A is, and why they are so intent on destroying everyone's image of Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna.
The whole time I was reading Pretty Little Liars, I couldn't put it down. Each girl has a totally different personality, ranging from preppy Spencer to athletic Emily. All four girls have a different take on their relationship with Ali and what happened to her. The diversity of the girls makes the book all the more interesting, and everyone can relate to at least one girl, if not all of them. Pretty Little Liars was fantastic, and I recommend it to any teenage girl

Book Description

Throughout history, unrequited love has inspired ballads, arias, poetry, drama, and literature. Almost always, however, the tale of the "star-crossed lovers" has been told from the point of view of the heartbroken pursuer. This illuminating new work explores unrequited love from both sides--that of the aspiring and eventually brokenhearted lover, and more unusually, that of the beloved, unwilling rejector. Based on systematically collected first-person accounts, Breaking Hearts shows how radically different and often contradictory the two experiences actually are. Blending scientific research with vivid narrative, the book utilizes current psychological theories about relationships, interdependence, attachment, and communication to provide careful analysis of the sometimes amusing and often heartrending stories people tell about their love lives. The central focus is the subjective experience: what it feels like to love someone who does not love you in return, and what is it like to be pursued by someone whose attentions you wish to discourage. Demolishing past theories about human fulfillment coming from loving or being loved, this valuable counterweight to traditional studies explores the other, darker side of love to show that it is the mutuality of affection that is crucial to happiness.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, but not a "how to get over it" book........2007-06-02

This is one of the best books a person in an uneven relationship could read. It is one of the few books (maybe the only one) that delves into what it is like to be a rejector, which is helpful for readers on both sides of the relationship. It also addresses the hidden assumptions about love and relationships can create problems when a new relationship fails or begins to falter. The book is based on the authors' research and findings from social psychology. The tone is academic but it is engaging because the subject matter is handled so well. The information is invaluable, because for most sensitive readers looking for direction in such a relationship, knowing what the other person is probably feeling gives you a better idea of what to do. So, for example, some persistence in a potential love relationship can be flattering, but once you start getting signals to stop, the harder you make the rejector work to get rid of you, the more they are going to dislike you. Lessions like this are punctuated with first person accounts that bring them to life. Warning: there are no sidebars, pictures, diagrams or funny quotes, and there are no bullet points "do's and don'ts" that you might find in a regular trade paperback on the topic. Nevertheless, this book does a real service.

3 out of 5 stars Book is Pointless? Maybe.............2005-01-20

If you've been freshly rejected and looking for some guidance on how to heal your broken heart, some consolation, or some small hint of hope that there is still a chance to win back your lost love then this book is not for you.

It's for people who have accepted the fact that your target of unrequited love is never going to reciprocate and wants to understand what happened before moving on. But as your read, you will see that you already know in your heart what happened and why you did what you felt you had to do at the time you did it.

In part it does explain or clarify some cloudy aspects of unrequited love. But for most part these are things you already knew and felt but have refused to accept. You will nod your head in agreement as you read about certain situations from other rejected tortured souls as well as from the viewpoint of the rejectors.

So for those reading this review who are still hopeful for a relationship with their target of unrequited love...forget it, it's never going to happen. This comes straight from the mouths of the rejectors interviewed in the book but you already knew that, didn't you?

This book only confirms what you already felt and knew.

2 out of 5 stars The one side of unrequitted love.......2004-07-04

This book is pointless. It's a simple result of surveys with author's suggestions. Put yourself into position of a would-be lover and a rejector, and you've read the whole book. If you're heartbroken and looking for understanding, this book will disappoint you. It mainly focuses on the other side of unrequited love, the rejector, and seems to defend (using the data) that position as more hurt by the experience. At one point it even compared the would-be lover to a criminal! That definitely does not reflect the whole society. The only thing this book helped me realize is that romantic love is very much a selfish thing.

5 out of 5 stars You haven't thought about it quite like this.......2000-04-19

Baumeister has a somewhat unusual approach among social psychologists -- rather than solely relying on surveys that supply easy numbers immediately, he gathers rambling discussions, written or spoken, and analyzes their content. He also draws on literary and historical data along with current empirical work (his own and others').

As the subtitle notes, Breaking Hearts is about the *two sides* of unrequited love. "The rejector's experience is of particular interest in this work because it has been shrouded in neglect and mystery. We shall seek to make clear what it is like to be the target of unwanted romantic affections, by relying on people's firsthand accounts of what they did and felt when they found themselves in such a situation" (p. 17). Of particular interest is the contrast between the accounts of the pursuer and the rejector as to "what really happened".

The authors look for and find commonalities among stories, AND they highlight individual statements that illustrate rules and exceptions. So we learn that, e.g., "roughly half of the people interviewed felt that...", but we also read detailed passages from individual interviews. The combination makes the book both engaging and believable. It's thorough scientific inquiry, the numbers are all here, but the subjective feel of things is presented too.

The writing's a little repetitive at times, but that's a minor detraction. Overall: quite interesting reading. Offers a new and deeper perspective than most of us probably have about something that's very commonplace.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book-highly recommended.......1998-11-01

Carefully researched and very interesting-this is a rare look into the nature of unrequited love from both points of view. Well written and insightful.

Gerald and Sara Murphy were the golden couple of the Lost Generation. Born to wealth and privilege, they fled the stuffy confines of upper-class America to reinvent themselves in France as legendary party givers and enthusiastic participants in the modernist revolution of the 1920s. He became an important painter; she made everyday life a work of art. Their friends F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and John Dos Passos all based fictional characters on the Murphys; Picasso painted them; and Calvin Tomkins rekindled their glamour for a younger generation in his affectionate 1971 portrait, Living Well Is the Best Revenge. Amanda Vaill's vivid new biography builds on Tomkins's work to provide a full-length account of the Murphys' remarkable life together.

As well as good times, that life included suffering endured with great courage. The Murphys' teenage sons died within two years of each other in the mid-1930s--one suddenly, one after a long battle with tuberculosis--and the Depression forced Gerald to resume the uncongenial work of managing his family's business. Vaill's sensitive rendering reveals the moral substance that enabled this stylish couple to survive heartbreak. But it's her marvelous evocation of those magical expatriate years that lingers in the memory. The wit and imaginative panache with which the Murphys lived sparkles again, recapturing a splendid historical moment. As Sara later said, "It was like a great fair, and everybody was so young." --Wendy Smith

Book Description

Gifted artist Gerald Murphy and his elegant wife, Sara, were icons of the most enchanting period of our time; handsome, talented, and wealthy expatriate Americans, they were at the very center of the literary scene in Paris in the 1920s. In Everybody Was So Young--one of the best reviewed books of 1995--Amanda Vaill brilliantly portrays both the times in which the Murphys lived and the fascinating friends who flocked around them. Whether summering with Picasso on the French Riviera or watching bullfights with Hemingway in Pamplona, Gerald and Sara inspired kindred creative spirits like Dorothy Parker, Cole Porter, and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Nicole and Dick Diver in Tender is the Night were modeled after the Murphys). Their story is both glittering and tragic, and in this sweeping and richly anecdotal portrait of a marriage and an era, Amanda Vaill "has brought them to life as never before" (Chicago Tribune).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Making It New".......2007-09-06

I had to go out and buy this book after seeing "Making It New: The Art and Style of Sara and Gerald Murphy" at the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, MA. The book is terrific, but if you're interested in this period, its writers and artists than track down this exhibit. It's a wonderful and extraordinary show about the Murphys and those they were friends with. Paintings, theater pieces, diary entries, letters, amazing photographs, home movies and more illustrate that the Murphys were really an essential part of the 1920s and 1930s. An argument can be made that they were the center that everything spun out from. It is absolutely sensational.

5 out of 5 stars The Murphys: maybe more interesting than their pal Fitzgerald.......2007-04-01

Zelda Fitzgerald died on March 10, 2005. Hers was a terrible death --- she was a patient at the Highland Mental Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, and the building caught fire, and because the patients were locked in, Zelda and eight others died. She was 48.

Her life had, effectively, ended years earlier, when she had the first of her breakdowns and was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Or had it ended earlier than that? Perhaps with the death of her estranged husband, the once glamorous, then ruined F. Scott Fitzgerald, in 1940. Or maybe even earlier, on the Riviera, in 1924, when she had a dalliance with a French aviator that so enraged that her husband she tried to kill herself a few months later. Or even earlier, when Scott started appropriating her personality and her ideas for the characters in his novels.

Yes, but for a few years there, they had it all, didn't they? They were the Golden Couple, the personification of the '20s: young, beautiful, gifted. But not smart about fame, although, back then, almost no one understood how the flame of media draws you in, consumes you for the amusement of an uncaring public, and leaves you with ashes in your mouth and regret in your heart.

No, wait. Some people did grasp that. The Murphys did. And, as Amanda Vaill tells their story, they are considerably more interesting than their friends, the drunk and disorderly Fitzgeralds.

And can we talk about turning life into art?

Late each morning in the summer of 1922, Gerald went outside his home in Antibes and created something never seen before --- a beach! --- by raking the seaweed and stones. For this, he is said to have invented the idea of the Riviera as a summer destination.

Moments later, Sara would join him and, on a blanket, read or write. She wore a white linen dress or bathing suit. And, always, a long strand of pearls, which she looped around her back so she wouldn't mar her tan (and, she said, because the sun was good for them). For this, she became a style-setter and muse.

Gerald and Sara together were not two but one. They were "The Murphys," a young and rich American couple who used their youth and money to establish themselves at the center of a cultural elite in which everybody was young, talented, acclaimed. Cole Porter, Stravinsky, Picasso (who was in love with Sara), Cocteau --- though they were stars on their own, they orbited the Murphys. "There was a shine to life wherever they were," Archibald MacLeish said. "It was as though custom and habit had been wiped away and the thing itself was, for an instant, seen. Don't ask me how."

Then F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway showed up.

If you've read Tender Is the Night, you know that Fitzgerald took the Murphys as models for the Divers. Whatever its merits, the novel reduced the Murphys to "Beautiful People." In fact, Gerald was an accomplished painter, an American Leger. He and Sara were experts on African-American spiritual music. They financed theatrical productions and helped worthy friends (Hemingway, for just one).

And they were far from untouched by the troubles of ordinary mortals.

First their young son Patrick came down with tuberculosis. Then, suddenly, their younger son died of meningitis. "Fancy. There's no other word for it," John Dos Passos said. "They could have thought & thought for a million years and they wouldn't have been able to think of one like that." And then, "fancy" again, a few years later, when Patrick died, and the Murphys had to carry on for their one remaining child.

It gets, if possible, more intense. Gerald returned to America to run his family business, a posh New York leather store named Mark Cross. He sent money to the faltering Fitzgerald. He had some deep poetic attachments with young men. And then he died. Dorothy Parker sent his widow this telegram: "Dearest Sara Dearest Sara." The widow staged a funeral that was described as "courage disguised as taste." But that was his life. And hers.

It's easy to read a book like this for the anecdotes about the mighty. But Fitzgerald comes across here as an eternal college boy and a bit of a fool, Hemingway as cold and manipulative. In contrast, the Murphys seem like explorers of the rarest kind --- blessed with money, they set out to find beauty and harmony. That they also found tragedy only makes their story more fascinating.

College kids majoring in Gender Studies can find much in the life of Zelda Fitzgerald to ponder. I'm not knocking that --- there are lessons galore in that roller coaster of a life. But when you're further along the road, the Fitzgeralds start to be, at bottom, a lot of noise --- spoiled children breaking things.

The Murphys, in contrast, look more substantial, more worthy of a sustained view. The Murphys, for all their money and privilege, seem real. These days, I don't want to read about the Fitzgeralds; I want to read Fitzgerald. But the Murphys --- they're well worth 500 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life Is Better Than Fiction!.......2007-01-11

This delightful story is like watching a wonderful old movie from the 30's-40's! And I learned a thing or two about history!!! I'll be urging my book group to read this.

5 out of 5 stars You will wish you had lived and loved and laughed with them.......2006-07-23

This is a joy, a party, a nonfiction book that reads like a novel. It will make you long to be a part of the expatriate Americans in Paris and the south of France during the 1920s, even if you are not particularly good with history. Amanda Vaill takes a decade, a place, and a group of friends, and unravels for you a world where Hemingway and Fitzgerald adored, hated and envied one another; a world in which Picasso draws Sara Murphy on the beach, nude but for a long strand of pearls; a world in which John Dos Passos and Dorothy Parker and so many others of the "Lost Generation" simply populated each other's lives with more talent and longevity than any of them truly knew. Meeting them one at a time, through beach parties and romances and the writing of novels and the making of art and the normal joys and tragedies of life, will plant the history of this time in your mind like you would never guess. Watch out -- your next step may be Hemingway's "Moveable Feast" and Fitzgerald's "Tender is the Night," and you will be yearning to eat at The Brasserie Lipp in Paris, straining to hear the ancient laughter coming from the back room.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful story beautifully written.......2005-12-27

The story of Gerald and Sara Murphy is sprawling and encompasses so much that was exciting about America's last period of innocence, and runs the gamut from being the golden-child chosen ones of their era to something approaching Greek tragedy in their private lives. But the real test of a good biography is in the writing, and Amanda Vaill stands beside David McCullough as one of the most engaging biographers in our time, doing the incredible job of keeping all the players and egos, all the locations and permutations straight, intriguing, and finally resulting in something most biographies never are: A real page-turner. Even if you've never read Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Dos Passos, or MacLeish, their stories as interwoven with the Murphy's own will grab and hold your attention as brilliant, distinct, and all-too-human characters. Kudos for a masterwork that pulls all the disparate elements of the Lost Generation together so effortlessly to convey this important time in 20th century history.

The only guide to overcoming the psychological stresses that can ruin a marriage after retirement

People are retiring earlier and wealthier than ever before. Why, then, are so many retired couples, instead of having the times of their lives together, becoming so angry, alienated, and estranged? Written by a psychologist specializing in work-family issues, For Better or for Worse...But Not for Lunch explores this troubling trend and provides readers with the information and tools they need to make their relationships thrive in retirement.

This is the first book devoted entirely to planning for the psychological aspects of retirement and its impact on marriage. With the help of vivid case studies from her files, Dr. Yogev illustrates common psychological and emotional problems--such as loss of a sense of purpose, too much togetherness, fights over friends and grandchildren, and tension over money--that can put undue stress on a marriage after retirement and describes her proven conflict-resolving, relationship-building techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Definetly worth your time reading!.......2006-01-28

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is planning on retiring in the near future or is years away. Even for people that have already begun this journey, it a worthwhile read.
It addresses alot of important issues that are easy to overlook in our excitement to be out of the office and be home with our loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars really great advice.......2001-11-29

This book is terrific. It is packed with useful tips for thinking about relationships after retirement. I'm 62, and discovered I could really use this. After reading it I bought several other copies to give to friends. It is very readable, and has quiz-yourself checklists at the end of every chapter that I found revealed a lot about my desires and needs that I didn't realize before. This is going to save me a lot of grief!

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sustaining a loving relationship after retirement.......2001-10-18

Dr. Sara Yogev's book targets a population that is growing and that has been largely ignored; that of the retired couple who is still vital and unacoustomed to spending quantity time with their partner. It's a book full of information, anecdotes and refreshingly new thoughts on how to continue to have a supportive and loving relationship in this stage of life. Dr. Yogev offers insight that is both provocative and relevant to a generation that is choosing early retirement Highly recommended. Suzanne Barash, M.A., LCPC and Life Coach

What do you do when you think you're attracted to guys, and then you meet a girl who steals your heart?

5 out of 5 stars Not only a good book, but a great sidekick for teens.......2007-05-11

I read "Empress of the World" four years ago when I, like Nic, was beginning to realize who I truly was, and without this book, it might not have been so easy. Now, a very out of the closet 17 year old, I still read it when I'm feeling down or just feel like reading something good. My original copy is beaten and battered from being read over and over, passed around my circle of friends, and getting stuffed under the pillow after late night reading sessions.

Even without the emotional attachment I have to "Empress," though, I think it's a great book. What I love so much about it is that it's so real. There is nothing fantastical about this book, nothing over-exaggerated or over-dramatized (except for every single thing Katrina does, but I have friends like that myself, so it's understandable!). Sara Ryan does not fabricate anything in this book; it really feels like the memoir from a young girl. It's hard to believe that it is not at all autobiographical, though I trust Ms Ryan when she insists that it is.

Some might say that the ending is predictable, or unfinished. I disagree on both parts. Trying not to give any spoilers away would be a tough task while defending the ending, but I'll say this: I think the ending is very realistic because it gives us what we expect, but not to fairy tale proportions. We're not sure what happens next, but a) there is a sequel, and b) you can kind of figure it out on your own. And once you do, you'll see the reality of it.

I may be biased because it is my favorite book, but then again, if it's my favorite, something has to be good about it. :)

5 out of 5 stars Scintillating.......2007-03-16

I loved this book when I read it the first time (and the second and third time). All of the characters are truly interesting, and you can't help but find yourself rooting for the two main characters of the novel- you want them to be in love forever. It's similar to books like "Keeping You a Secret" and "Annie on my Mind", so if you enjoyed those books, this is a sure deal.

5 out of 5 stars thoughts on Empress of the World.......2007-01-24

Nicola Lancaster has it hard enough at a camp where high-school students take college-like courses, but now she's she's got to deal with the pressures of trying to hold up a complicated and confusing relationship.
On Nic¡¦s first day at the Siegel Institute she befriends two other girls, redheaded and outgoing Katrina, as well as Battle, who posses electric green eyes and who Nic calls ¡¥Beautiful Hair Girl,¡¦ though only in her mind. The three also make friends with Kevin, an aspiring composer and Isaac, funny and nice even though he's just...confusing. They all care for one another like friends do; when Nic falls on a hike and twists her ankle, they all want to make sure she¡¦s okay. But after a little while she wants to go moving around more and the only one who doesn't feel ¡§it¡¦s her ankle, let her do what she wants¡¨ is Battle.
The situation is believable,it sounds as if this is how it would go with teenagers in real life. It isn¡¦t straight out forward how Battle truly feels for Nic, it doesn¡¦t even seem apparent to Battle. When Nic catches a fever Battle comes to comfort her and their relationship starts with a kiss, like almost all relationships in teen romance novels. Though everything goes wrong when Nic decides to make Battle gift.
Sara Ryan touches a subject few people want to talk about, gayness, with an excellent flair. Empress of the World is great book choice for someone looking for an alternative to traditional teen-romance novels. n

5 out of 5 stars Likeable characters, believable plotting, & smart writing........2006-08-25

Publisher's Weekly is usually a reliable, objective source, which makes the review above all the more disturbing: this is one of the most competently written & deftly characterized young adult novels for lesbians I've seen in a long while. (I've been reading such books for 30+ years.) It's a shame the review is so out of step with the book's tone, given how influential it gets to be just by virtue of sitting here, on Amazon. The reviewer claims the characters are flat & the dialogue 'over-scripted' (huh? oh please) yet gives only 1 (very peripheral) example--which in context works quite well, as it happens. And as for "painfully detailed descriptions of their clothes"--I'd bet money the (anonymous) reviewer was a man: this is a book about teenaged girls, hello?

Ryan's characters are both distinct and quite believable; the language she uses is specific to each character, a pretty impressive accomplishment for any book but especially a Y/A one; and the (fairly low-key) trials of the two lead girls feel real without the tedious melodrama of so much teen writing. It's a refreshing and well-told story with a credible ending: as a debut novel, it's terrific. This business about 'one-dimensional' characters strikes me as either a writer so unfamiliar with the genre he had no business reviewing this, or as just plain old poorly-masked homophobia: if you don't want to read about gay teens then... don't. If you do, give this book a try--especially if you're interested in writing about Y/A lesbian subject matter. Heaven knows such books are and remain scarce on the ground. This is one of the good ones.

I couldn't even finish it. Not a single character was likable. If you want to read a good book, read Annie On My Mind.

Book Description

In a town where gossip thrives like the ivy that clings to its mansions, where mysteries lie behind manicured hedges and skeletons hide in every walk-in closet, four perfect-looking girls aren't nearly as perfect as they seem.

Three years ago, Spencer, Aria, Emily, Hanna, and their best friend Alison were the girls at Rosewood Day School. They clicked through the halls in their Miu Miu flats, tanned in their matching Pucci bikinis, and laughed behind their freshly manicured fingernails. They were the girls everyone loved but secretly hated—especially Alison.

So when Alison mysteriously vanished one night, Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna's grief was tinged with . . . relief. And when Alison's body was later discovered in her own backyard, the girls were forced to unearth some ugly memories of their old friend, too. Could there be more to Alison's death than anyone realizes?

Now someone named A, someone who seems to know everything, is pointing the finger at one of them for Ali's murder. As their secrets get darker and their scandals turn deadly, A is poised to ruin their perfect little lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect by Sara Shepard.......2007-09-23

The third book in this awesome series by Sara Shepard is the best yet. As soon as we think everything is getting better, it all comes crashing down in a wave of confusion and betrayal. And A is behind it all. She knows everyone's secrets, and she'll use them to get what she wants. Spencer, Emily, Aria, and Hanna have nothing to do but watch their lives fall apart around them.

But now they know who Ali's killer is. Or do they?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect is .. Perfect!.......2007-09-15

Perfect was definitely the best out of the series. 'A' is so much more malicious in this book, which causes many tragedies and predicaments to occur. You find out who Ali's killer MIGHT be, who is someone I really did not expect. The great (but kind of annoying) thing about this book is that my predictions about perfect were never right! I never expected some of the events in Perfect to occur, and I was completely surprised when they did. It took me only two days to read this book because it was so suspenful and chocked full of juicy details and events! The end disapointed me because I thought you know who 'A' was--and I really thought I might find out, but then the book ends and something terrible happens. I was upset that the book ended on such a sour note, and it left me craving for more. I am super excited for the next book and I am sure I will be shocked when I found out who 'A' really is.

5 out of 5 stars The 'Perfect' blend of mystery and scandal.......2007-09-13

There was a time, back in the seventh grade, when Alison "Ali" DiLaurentis, Hanna Marin, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, and Emily Fields ruled Rosewood Day school. Together, these five girls determined what, and who, was hot, and what, and who, were so yesterday. They were the girls everyone wanted to be - especially Ali - and the ones every guy wanted to date. Even Hanna, Spencer, Aria, and Emily felt jealousy towards the perfect Ali. Still, the five girls spent every waking moment together, trading secrets, gossiping about their classmates, and hanging at the mall where they shopped 'til they dropped, their parents credit cards in tow. But then, everything changed. At the end of seventh grade, Ali suddenly up and disappeared without a trace, and each of the girls slowly went their own ways. That is, until "A" came into the picture, threatening to reveal each of their deepest, darkest secrets; and an unlikely discovery was made, that of Ali's body, buried under the cement in her old backyard. Suddenly, it became evident, that secrets don't always stay buried.

After Ali disappeared, Hanna Marin dropped Spencer, Aria, and Emily, and picked up a new friend in the dorky Mona Vanderwaal. Together, they vowed to drop the extra weight, and become the most beautiful girls in school. Now, at the age of sixteen, they have both accomplished just that. But they want more. With Mona's Sweet Seventeen quickly approaching, there's no doubt in their minds that this won't be the bash of the century. But thanks to "A," there's trouble a-brewing between the two besties. Trouble that could set them at odds with each other forever. Spencer Hastings knew that it was wrong to steal her sister, Melissa's, essay for economics class. But it was so perfect, and there's no harm in a little fib now and then. Unfortunately, the essay has been entered into the Golden Orchid competition, throwing Spencer into the midst of semi-fame. Spencer just wants to ignore the congratulations surrounding her, but "A" is making that difficult with the constant threats of revealing her wrong-doing. Emily Fields knows that being gay would make her family hate her for life. She also knows that, if she doesn't report "A" to the police, she, or one of her old friends, could end up dead. She just never realized that coming forward with information would make her the target of "outing" her to the whole town. Aria Montgomery thought that her troubles were over when her family moved to Iceland for three years. But, upon return, her father, Byron, continued the affair he had left behind with his student, Meredith; and, due to the fact that Aria knew all about it, her mother wants nothing to do with her. Luckily, she has Ezra to run to. Unfortunately, with "A" around, he may not be able to claim the title as her "knight in shining armor" for much longer. As if dealing with "A" weren't enough, of course, there's some peeping tom-like nutcase running around the pretentious Philadelphia town of Rosewood peering into windows, and creeping everyone out; and the girls think that the newfound stalker may somehow be related to "A."

Not many book series get better with each installment. However, with Sara Shepard's PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, the series can be comparable to a fine wine - it only gets better with age. Or, in this case, with each new addition to the collection. PERFECT is no exception. From page one, I was hooked, and found myself incapable of putting down this amazing new novel. Hanna is still my favorite character. Her struggles with an eating disorder, and feelings of loneliness, as she finds herself on the outs with her superficial best friend, Mona, truly make you feel emotional towards her; while Aria's current situation regarding her tumultuous relationship with her mother, Ella, her difficulties with her father, Byron, and her growing feelings for her English teacher, Ezra, only work to invoke the same feelings. While Spencer isn't necessarily stealing Melissa's boyfriends, as she was in the previous installments, the new insight she gains into her childhood and current lifestyle thanks to a few sessions from her new therapist, Dr. Evans, are extremely gripping, and hard to ignore. And Emily...well, the fact that she's suddenly faced with kissing Maya goodbye, or just plain kissing her, is enough to throw her off her game. While PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and FLAWLESS were slightly more light and fluffy; PERFECT brings in an extremely emotionally charged storyline that leaves you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, contemplating what will happen in the fourth, and final chapter of the saga. The PERFECT blend of mystery and scandal.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the series!.......2007-09-04

It seems like sara shepards books keep getting better and better. Perfect comes on strong and there is never a dull moment. A starts taking revenge on the girl and it isn't pretty. The ending is a HUGE cliffhanger, I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. Will Aria, Spencer, Hannah, and emily ever find out the full truth? Hopefully book 4 will answer that. Oh and *semi spoiler* I don't think what was revealed about Ali's murder is the full story. I think someone else finished her off and I think I have a good idea of who that someone is...

5 out of 5 stars perfect is... perfect!.......2007-08-25

it's difficult to write this review without making any spoilers. i will just say, please read books 1 and 2 first, in order, because if you don't, you will miss out on what's going on and all the interpersonal relationships/drama between the characters. And let me just say, there is LOTS OF JUICY DRAMA in this book!!! All 4 of the girls have really good scenes, I like how Sara Sheppard doesn't play favorites and gives proper attention to all her characters so that it's mot like you're skimming past the filler chapters of the 3 other characters to get to the chapter with the character that actually matters, in Pretty Little Liars, there are no filler chapters and all the characters matter!

*** TEENY TINY SEMI-SPOILER ***
In this book we MAYBE find out who Ali's killer possibly might be, but we aren't sure because as it turns out.......... LOL I'm not gonna tell you! go read the book!!!

This is one of those satisfying recipe books that includes the reader in. The dialogue is chatty and warm and the recipes all sound delicious. Just as her original Baking Book is. A winner !

3 out of 5 stars Quantity over quality . . . .......2007-01-10

I'll give her credit, Rosie has a large selection of recipes to choose from, but the basic layout of this cookbook is not ideal, and her measurements are a bit freaky. You'll see 1 cup + 6 tablespoons of flour(isn't that a third of a cup?) Or 12 tablespoons of butter, or 6 tablespoons of milk . . . Again, couldn't that be converted to something more mainstream, like liquid ounces? And the recipes are frequently not all on one page, so you get to flip back and forth from the ingredients to the directions. Her writing is very chatty and comforting, but the recipies I've tried (and there have been several) have only been OK - not memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Such a great compliment to Rosie's baking book!.......2006-06-06

I enjoy this book as much as I do the baking book. I have never had a cookbook with so many 5* recipes. The recipe people request the most is the Baker's Best Snickerdoodles. Unbeatable.

I couldn't beleive how good the cookies are in this book. She is so on the money with every single one. The one that really rocks are the Fudgie Wudgies cookies. Every time I make these, people want more. The 1st time i tasted one fresh out of the oven. I thougth the top of my head was going to come off. I can't wait for her to come out with another cook book. I bought her cake cook book aswell. And that is just as good as the cookie cook book.
Thank you so very much for writing these 2 cook books.

5 out of 5 stars This is a REAL cookbook!.......2005-04-02

Every young bride should start with a cookbook as good as this one! The cookbooks that use 'quick' items, or 'premixed' items are not really for cooks that enjoy the entire process of making recipes. If you enjoy the process of really cooking, this book is for you! I am an exprienced cook, I don't really need all the detail, but it is much appreciated anyway. I don't know everything there is to know, the amount of time to stir, cook, and what the item looks like after you bake it are all very helpful. There are not pictures in this book, but I am having no problem finding recipes to make. Each one has been better than good. The brownies! UGH! They are to die for, they have started me on a brownie baking frenzy. All I can say is thank you so much for making the 2 cookbooks. I am so glad I do not live close to the bakery that she owns, I would not be able to keep away. I bought Kitchen Aid Mixers for several brides that I knew, it is my firm belief that all young brides should own one, if I would have known about this book, they would have gotten it, also. cindy

2 out of 5 stars Not Her Best.......2006-11-28

Really Two & a Half Stars:

Being a fan of Sara Bennett's books, (Lily & the Sword", "Beloved Highlander" and "The Rose & the Warrior",) I looked forward to reading "Once He Loves". From the beginning of the book I found myself confused as to the character of Ivo -was he an oaf? - was he an interesting man? It was difficult to determine. Once he displayed his sexual talents, he came more to life, but thoroughout the story I found difficulty in feeling who he was- something was missing from the whole book, and it was depth and clarity of characters and story. As for the herione, Briar, she was so prickly and confused most of the time, it weakened her character, and you simply lost interest in her. (have you noticed how fragmented and confused female heriones are written?) If she called Ivo a "disgraced Knight" one more time, I would cringe. Sara Bennett usually writes strong, clear characters and stories which are great to relate to. However, in this book I don't think Ivo was given his due, and Briar became more and more fragmented as the story progressed. (SPOILER here) As for Jocelyn, how could she continue to hide her secret in the face of Briar's revenge? It just didn't make sense and overall didn't flow well. Sometimes you get the feeling the authors are so pressured to release a book a year by their publishers, they just spin them out.

Anyone can put words on a page, but it's those talented authors who move you and make them come alive. (Mary Stewart "The Crystal Cave"; "The Princess & the Barbarian" by Betina Krahn; Dark Queen Trilogy" by Susan Carroll (book 1 "The Dark Queen" - book 2 "The Courtesan", book 3 "The Silver Rose"; "Once a Warrior" by Karny Monk; "The Pize" by Julie Garwood, and "A Kingdom of Dreams" by Judith McNaught (although I bought 4 books by J. McNaught this was the only book I enjoyed though.

3 out of 5 stars Once He Loves.......2006-02-24

it was ok the the heroine charater begin to get on my nerves halfway into the story and this book is part of a series and I want to read all of them but overall I enjoyed this book so I am hoping I will like the next one I read.

4 out of 5 stars A prickly heroine & a truly noble hero.......2004-06-27

Vengeance & hatred begin this novel, but love and honor triumph at its end.

I picked this book up not realizing it was the last in a trilogy; one certainly does not have to read the others to thoroughly enjoy this one. Excllent job there.

Ivo is a super hero: strong, compelling, honorable, fair, understanding, a knight in every sense. He is the very best thing about this book. Briar is a strong and determined heroine, but there's so much pain & hatred in her that she is often cruel. Although her cutting remarks toward Ivo are a defensive mechanism--and he understands that, marvelous man--it is sometimes difficult to like her because of them. Yes, thay're that cruel, because she knows they hurt him. Although she eventually is healed adn becomes a nicer person, there are moments the reader will think she doesn't deserve him. She is headstrong & never thinks ahead of the moment. Briar's visit to the villain is a case in point; you'd think she's distrustful enough to be wary. A weak plot point, in my opinion.

The mystery surrounding Briar's step-mother's death is well-handled for the most part, except that there's no final explanation of the motive. The secondary romance is sweet & warm, very nice. The villain is evil, completely without redeeming qualities, and a consumate actor. His demise is almost too easy.

But Ivo in particular raises this book to a high level. The novel moves along at a brisk pace, and the chemistry between the couple is all it should be.

4 out of 5 stars Ties up the Trilogy - YET Stands Alone.......2003-10-27

Setting North of York 1072 --- Sara Bennett wraps up her medieval trilogy quite nicely with this last entry in the mini series with another stellar love story. If you have read the pre-quels - LILY AND THE SWORD (Radulf and Lily) and THE ROSE AND THE SHIELD (Rose and Gunnar), you will see where this last entry ties up a mystery from the very first book. Although, and I do stress this, you do not have to read the previous two novels in order to thoroughly enjoy this one as it does stand on it's own merit.

Briar Kenton, once a `Lady' of the manor of a rich and powerful Earl, has had to eat humble pie since her father, having been branded a traitor for rebelling against King William, had ended his own life leaving Briar and her two sisters, basically penniless and without a home. Forced to survive on their own, Briar, who was reputed to have the voice of an angel and her sister Mary earned a meager living by entertaining at the noble homes in York, previously homes where they would have once been honored guests. Briar, survived the last two years feeding off of her hatred for the man she held responsible for their state of affairs, the hated Lord Radulf. She had heard the stories of Radulf's devotion to his wife Lily and thought to lure him to her bed, thus destroying the happiness he and his wife had.

Ivo de Vessey, a disgraced knight was now a mercenary in the employ of Radulf. Briar, mistakenly thinking he was Radulf lures him to her bed, fighting her attraction to the man she knew she should hate, and hating the wonderful and magical feelings his lovemaking did to her body. When she discovers that Radulf never came to the party and she had slept with the wrong man, she was horrified. Ivo, recognized Briar from his youth when he was a squire for her father. He remembered her as the young child who idolized and had constantly followed him around and felt more than just lust for the beautiful but very prickly young woman. He wanted desperately to protect her from herself, yet never felt, now that he was disgraced, that he was worthy of her. His fallen knighthood and her being the daughter of a traitor did not bode well for either to have a happy conclusion, but cupid's arrow didn't take their backgrounds into account and their love blossomed.

While I found the story well written I found that two things kept me from giving it a higher rating. One of course was Briar's very irritating behavior and insults to Ivo who I truly admired for his honesty and honor. The other was the plan that Briar originally thought would destroy Radulf - it was never fully explained as to how it would destroy his marriage and didn't make too much sense to me. I thought this to be a very weak link in the story, otherwise, I found it to be action packed, with great sensual love scenes, and I particularly liked the very sweet secondary romance between Sweyn and Mary. Bottom line - the reader will not be disappointed as this was a wonderful trilogy and one I can highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars You Won't Want To Miss This One If You Have Read The Others!.......2003-07-01

This story is third in a trilogy that has been very entertaining. In this story Briar seduces the wrong man and instead finds the one man that will love and protect her, and finally prove to her that not all men are weak.

Briar is the daughter of a pronounced traitor and she and her two sisters have been turned away from their family estate and made into outcasts. Briar gently nurtures the flame of her hatred of Lord Radulf (Lily and the Sword) whom she feels is responsible for her fathers death and their current situation and sets out to take from him the one thing that she knows he cherishes the most the love of Lily. Only her plans go awry she seduces Ivo instead thinking that he is her enemy. She is shocked by the things he makes her feel and she is unsure how to act once she realizes her mistake.

Ivo de Vessey is a mercenary who fights for Radulf. He has come north to York with his lord to settle trouble that is brewing on Lady Lily's land. He recognizes Briar from the first as the young girl that used to follow him around when he fostered at her estate as a young boy. Briar makes him feel things that he is best off forgetting but try as he might he can't walk away from the prickly lady and the mysteries that cloud her past. Together they set out to unravel Briar's past and perhaps heal Ivo's past as well.

This was a good book and I would have given it 4 *'s except at times Briar was just like her name, to prickly and unlikeable at times and sometime out right cruel. I often found myself wondering why Ivo put up with it. I like a strong lady but at times she went overboard in her actions. In my opinion the story was saved by Ivo a true Knight in every way and the mystery that surrounded the the young Briar and her sisters. If you have read the previous two titles in this series you won't want to miss this one. If you are new to the series this book still stands on it's own. Either way Ms. Bennett has written another fine romance.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jewish cookbook!.......2007-02-05

My mom received this little cookbook for her wedding 40 years ago, so these were the Jewish recipes I grew up on in my household. I have continued her tradition in using this as my main source of Jewish recipes. People always tell me I make the best matzah balls and latkes they've ever tasted, and I attribute that 100 percent to tips in this cookbook. A previous reviewer mentioned the noodle kugel and stuffed cabbage recipes as well - both of which my mom became famous for!

5 out of 5 stars As close to tradition and Gramma as you'll find.......2006-11-09

My stained, strained and well-worn 1956 copy is my most loved Jewish cookbook; my Mom cooked all holiday recipes from this and many more. Sara Kasdan's writing style and the anecdotes are priceless. Even if you don't cook anymore, buy it just for a wonderful read and the taste of yesterday.

5 out of 5 stars Can't beat it for good old favorites.......2003-05-15

Some of the directions were a bit complicated to follow, or didn't match what I knew the recipies to be. However, for the most part, this is right out of my memories of my great Nana!

5 out of 5 stars Good basic guide to traditional Jewish cooking........1999-07-17

Along with The Joy of Cooking for everyday basic cooking, I learned to prepare tradiditional Ashkenazic (Eastern European) Jewish dishes from Love and Knishes when it was first published 40 years ago when I was a newly-wed. The recipes and preparation instructions in Love and Knishes are simple, the ingredients are usually staples and the commentary is very funny, even if now viewed as, perhaps, stereotypical. The recipes are easily adaptable to today's guidelines to healthier (lower fat content) guidelines. I'm giving this as a gift to my soon to be new daughter-in-law. If your mom didn't keep kosher or prepare traditional dishes for holidays, sabbath etc. then Love and Knishes is a good place to start learning.
