Book Description

In the 1970s and 1980s, before he earned national acclaim for his award-winning novels, Pete Dexter was a newspaper columnist. Every week, in a few hundred words, Dexter cut directly to the heart of the American character at a time of national turmoil and crucial change. With haunting urgency, his columns laid bare the violence, hypocrisy, and desperation he saw on the streets of Philadelphia and in the places he visited across the country. But he reveled, too, in the lighter side of his own life, sharing scenes with the indefatigable Mrs. Dexter, their young daughter, and a series of unforgettable creatures who strayed into their lives. No matter what caught Dexter's eye, it was illuminated by his dark, brilliant humor.

Collected here for the first time are eighty-two of the best of those spellbinding, finely wrought pieces—with a new introduction by the author—assembled by Rob Fleder, editor of the bestselling Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Book. Paper Trails is searing, heart-breaking, and irresistibly funny, sometimes all at once. As Pete Hamill says in his foreword, these essays "are as good as it ever gets."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pete Dexter can WRITE!.......2007-04-06

Boy is Pete Dexter a good writer. This collection of his columns from, among others, the Sacramento Bee and the Philadelphia Inquirer are occasionally a little dark, but never boring, and cover a wide array of subjects. If you've never read Pete Dexter, you should, and this is a good way to get your feet wet; that being said, his novels are not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Biting.......2007-04-05

Dexter's stories about life in America may be the most inciteful observations being written today. Spellbinding prose.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, fun, sad, poignant ..........2007-03-15

Dexter is truly one of America's greatest writers ... this collection is impossible to put down. If the first piece doesn't grab your heart, you don't have one. This is every bit as good as his novels ... and those are masterpieces.

4 out of 5 stars PETE DEXTER'S UNIQUE STORIES OF LIFE.......2007-02-13

Four FASCINATING Stars! National Book Award-winning writer Pete Dexter wrote kaleidoscopic newspaper columns and magazine articles on his observations of life, love, marriage, death, and everything in between in preceding decades. These 82 vignettes are unique and engrossing, coming from multiple sources Iike Esquire, Sports Illustrated, Redbook, Inside Sports, Philadelphia Daily News, and the Sacramento Bee, focusing on many locations around the country. Although somewhat dated, this book proves the timeless phrase "The more things change, the more they remain the same": case in point, Dexter's 'O. J. Simpson vs the press' viewpoint is right on the money, as O. J. once again regretably rises to the attention of the world.

In the great tradition of writers like Jimmy Breslin, Mr Dexter writes with a keen eye, sardonic wit, and a gift for detail and opinion in rough-edged, highly-descriptive, and presumptive prose. The stories keep coming, letting the reader sometimes read between the lines and fill in missing details: here's how he describes how he rushed from Florida to Philadelphia in mid-winter to accept a much-needed new job: "I arrived three days later with one pair of boots, no coat, running as close to empty as I've ever been", a whale of a winter image in 21 words. You fill in the rest; unshaven, dirty laundry in the back seat? The book is loaded with these.

The specific stories are varied: a salute to a TV newsman murdered on his knees in a foreign country (no, not that newsman and not that country!), the escapades of two friends nicknamed Low Gear and Minus (no kidding!), a mother cat in a dangerous world, a beer throwing contest (seriously!), police stories, courtroom stories, stereotypical views on race but with an underlying fairness and fondness for all men, a paper bag that should have been left alone, murders that could and should have been avoided, an old boxer one should stay away from, and the Brian Spencer-involved murder case that he peels back like an onion. The stories run from the truly interesting to the mundane, but things are never boring based on the grittiness and uniqueness of Mr Dexter's vignettes of life. It may take a couple of stories to get your bearings, but by then he's pulled you into his world. Definitely Recommended!! Four INCISIVE Stars!

5 out of 5 stars Brings yesterday into focus for today's girl.......2000-07-26

My 7 yr. old advanced reader found this book not only reasonable to read, but it held her excitement at wanting to know what would happen to each of the characters as the wagon train progressed on its journey and met real dangers. It was not too scary, but filled with the concerns of real life in the pioneer days. The story developed the unfolding of a girlhood friendship in such a way as to show a young reader ways to ease into a relationship. It was a delight to read with a child and educational in many ways.

4 out of 5 stars The Pioneer Cat-Chapter 3.......2000-02-03

I really enjoyed this story. I really liked it when her family felt sorry for her and let her have that cat. It's about a little girl on her way to Missouri with her family, Ma, Pa, Kate, Benjy, Duffy, and Doris.

5 out of 5 stars Whose Children Are They?.......2007-07-12

America's public schools really don't belong to the American public. They belong to the federal government, not the several state governments as some might imagine and certainly not to the parents of the 50 million children who attend public schools. Federal dollars decide what is taught and not taught in public schools, so if you're wondering why Johnny can't read, write, add and subtract but knows all about rain forests, 3rd world countries and condoms, you can thank your representative and senator who support the teachers unions that beg for those all-important federal dollars that are used to dumb down Johnny, ensuring he learns no more than what Big Brother wants him to learn. It's a frightning scenario, but unfortunately, it's true. Someone doesn't want your kid to learn the verbal skills that enable him to think independently or the math skills that allow him to work independently. Independent thinking goes against the social order. We must work together as a group, not as individuals accountable only to God. We're accountable to each other but most of all to Big Brother. Remember that the next time you question whether your local school has the "right" to teach your 2nd grader about sexual orientation or why your high school senior's SAT score isn't good enough to get into that preferred college. You know, the one most of the rich kids go to. Iserbyt's research proves the government believes you give up your parental rights when you send your children to its schools. If you doubt it, consider some of our more recent federal court decisions. If you disagree with these decisions, it seems you have to decide whether you want to leave your children in Big Brother's care or put your children in a private school or Christian school or home school them yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Can't see the forest for the trees.......2007-06-13

The author posits that, since at least 1880, US education has been developed with the goal of producing an army of worker-bots, and that to do this, education has been engineered to destroy the cultural matrix that produced the author's ideal --- the rugged individualist, the "God-fearing, educated man of the early twentieth century."

The author overlooks the fact that in the early 20th century, education was mostly confined to white males of the middle and upper economic strata. She also assumes that fear of God was more prevalent then than now, which seems ridiculous in these times of crusading politicians and burgeoning mega-churches.

The book is a chronology, comprising excerpts from the published works and speeches of noted educators, social theorists, psychologists, sociologists, and other "experts," which she claims prove the existence of a movement to subvert traditional American values. This plot, she believes, was rooted in the desire of American industrialists Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie, et al., to create a pliable workforce out of unbending Americans in response to the global convergence of business, politics and culture which they envisioned.

A basic fallacy of the book, I believe, lies in ascribing to classroom teachers vast powers to mold personality, alter values, and channel behavior.

The underlying problem is this: The author sees the trees and descries an orchard producing poisonous fruit. But the orderly planting she perceives to be the work of diabolical Designers is most likely only a tangled forest grown out of the chaotic strivings of humans struggling in utter darkness to improve their world.

That said, if you overlook the conspiracy theorizing, "Dumbing Down" offers an interesting overview of the development of modern educational theory.

2 out of 5 stars Paranoia.......2007-04-18

It may be sincere, but its effect on many is probably to discredit better and more carefully thought-out criticisms of modern schooling. Read someone like John Taylor Gatto instead, who has much less of a questionable ax to grind.

5 out of 5 stars A parents nightmare but a must read!!.......2005-03-07

This book is so informative and will expand on many avenues of how our education is where it is today. Even how the Board of Education goes against the Constitution and that you can not change, but what you will gain from this is a wealth of knowledge that first will make you extremely mad and sick to your stomach. You will begin to see the whole picture as to the why's of the government's agenda. I see other reviews that want to say this is a right wing conspiracy you will see this is not just right wing it is just what the elite who control this country want to see happen. Even Rockefeller is quoted as saying that education for the masses should only enable you to buy products and read a newspaper but the end result keeps you from understanding their agenda and also from learning in the manner that only the elite feel they are entitled to know. This book defines the Goals 2000 Clinton set out to accomplish and he is liberal. History books are rewritten and important things omitted, math is taught 5 different ways so thats it is purposely confusing. Students are profiled for future employers even in the second grade. When I pulled my kids out of public school a Teacher literally fell to her knees and thanked God for me doing the right thing by my kids. When teachers finally figure out what is going on if they choose not teach this way they are threatened with their job. Schools that don't implement this teaching do not get federal funding. Look at your kids are their ideals different from yours. Ask them if they have ever been told it doesn't matter what your parents teach you you don't have to listen to them you can be your own person. Buy the book be enlightened.

Book Description

Sexual abuse of minors and vulnerable adults by Catholic clergy burst onto the American scene in 1984. Revelations about such abuse since then have confirmed that this tragedy is not limited to the U.S. Catholic Church, nor is it a new phenomenon that grew out of so-called secularizing trends of the late twentieth century. The Doyle-Sipe-Wall report clearly demonstrates a deep-seated problem that spans the Church's history. This collection of documents from official and unofficial sources begins its survey in 60 CE and concludes with the contemporary scandal. It reveals an institution that has tried to come to grips with this devastating internal problem from its earliest years. At times circumspect and at other times open and direct, Church leaders tried a variety of means to rein in the various violations of clerical celibacy. The sexual abuse crisis is not isolated from the questions of the celibate practice of all Catholic clergy and the moral questions that involve marriage and all human sexual behaviors. These are the main, yet unspoken, reasons why sexual abuse has been such an inflammatory and dangerous issue for the hierarchy. The Church abuse scandal of the contemporary era, rather than seen as a new challenge, is actually the catalyst for a complex process that is forcing the official Church to redefine its ideology of sexuality, its responsibility to its members and its role in society. The three distinguished authors have served as experts and consultants in over 1,000 cases of sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy, and have collectively spent over 70 years of official service within the church.

5 out of 5 stars Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes: The Catholic Church's 2,000-Year Paper Trail of Sexual Abuse.......2007-08-15

This book is an enlightening look at the issues behind the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church and the failure of leadership to adequately deal with the problem, both decades ago and today. Doyle presents a candid view of the motives behind the decisions that have taken place behind the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the clerical culture. The book is well written, easy to read and easily understand. I highly recommend it to all Catholics.

4 out of 5 stars A very informative book. .......2007-01-06

In my opinion this is a valuable book, especially for Catholics who are very perplexed as to how the sexual abuse scandal happened. Both the history and recent events in this area are covered and explained very well. However, the book comes across as one in which independent writings of the three authors were lumped together with very little coordination or joint editing. In particular, Chapter 4: " The Doyle-Mouton-Peterson Manual ..." should, in my opinion, have been an appendix, and is a distraction in the body of the book. Also, there is significant repetition in the first and latter sections.
Nevertheless, I think this is an important book which should be read by all American Catholics.

5 out of 5 stars Clerical Abuse.......2006-12-07

If this review seems harsh, it's because the lives of kids are at stake and the problem is NOT being addressed openly by the Catholic Church.

When I read a non-fiction book and come across a fact that startles me, I put a dot in the margin next to the sentence and, at the back of the book, list the page number. This helps me research and/or discuss matters of import while preserving their context.

Here are a few of the items I marked of Father Doyle's (et al) objective history of clerical celibacy and child abuse in the Catholic Church:

4- Solicitation in the confessional

21- Pope Leo IX decided to exclude "only those who had offended repeatedly and over a long period of time."

28 - Pope Benedict commanded that no two monks were to sleep in the same bed.

44 - Pope Benedict XIV condemned the practice of priests granting absolution to the very persons with whom they had engaged in solicitation.

60 - The John Jay College Survey review commissioned by the bishops found the 5,450 complaints of clerical sexual abuse included sixteen U.S. bishops.

To determine for yourself if this is a NEW problem, read pages 5,6,7,11,13,17,20,21,22,26,30,33,35,36,37,40,44,46,52,68,104,
170,211,214,215,223,225,226 and 235.

Oh, on page 258, we learn the Los Angeles dioceses uses the same PR firm earlier hired by Enron and Charles Keating.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2006-09-23

This book is a must read for all catholics. Thanks to Tom Doyle, Richard Sipe and Patrick Wall for having the courage "to do the right thing" and reveal what the catholic church wants to ignore and keep "secret" - power, control and abuse.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Book.......2006-08-16

This book is a most useful one - to say the least - for those of us, within the Church, grieved by these scandals and the utterly appalling manner in which they have been/are being handled. This excellent book should be required reading for bishops and priests everywhere.

Sadly, it would appear that there is not much enthusiasm among many clergy for being educated about the nature and extent of the evil that has devastated so many lives. That in itself is a terrible indictment of many in the institutional Church.

There are many false shepherds and - in Jesus' words - "hired hands", who DO NOT CARE about those wounded and torn by "wolves within the fold". They have sympathy for - and affinity with - their "brother priests" who are, in fact, sexual predators; and no love or compassion for their victims whose lives are so deeply scarred.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide for beginning genealogists.......1997-04-07

For anyone trying to learn about their family through church and civil records from Europe, this is an excellent tool. Since most records follow standard formats this book guides one through the "standard" verbiage and allows one to pick out the important details about a death, birth or wedding record. The only thing that would be more helpful would be a better guide to handwriting styles of the period for the various languages

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars On the right TRAC.......2006-04-24

I was provided with the opportunity to read this book and was surprised in the fact that this was the first I had heard another individual speak to the issue that electronic information should be deemed the master and paper should be considered transitory.
I am creating retention schedules that state exactly that. electronic information should be deemed the master and paper should be considered transitory
I like the fact that there are less reasons to keep records around than there are not using paper for managing information. This book is being passed around our office for others which I thought was an excellent idea for others to share as well.
I found it to be a very easy read and took it home on the weekend to peruse and take notes.
The statement that rang so true for me was that "employees must be trained to be accountable for their records"
I feel that in the government today not everyone truly believes that statement.
I like your inclusion of the websites for reference. I feel you and your company has done an excellent job with the research and you've captured the essence of future planning with electronic information. My biggest issue with this book is the price $$I feel for the amount of information that is in the book I would think that your company would be able to take 1/2 the cost and still be able to have a lucratic business and bring in business knowing full well of your success.

5 out of 5 stars Skeptic.......2006-04-12

I was reluctant at first to start reading this book, when I did however I found it to be easy reading and interesting. I honestly wanted to keep reading.

I like it first because it is in a plain simple language that any one can follow. It provides an easy to follow step by step process to make electronic records master. The book lays out the plan for the skeptics' who believe nothing can replace paper. I like the examples, the comparison of the dirt road crossings and the information highway. I love the summary tips at the end of each chapter, which of course I had to write down. By the time I finished reading Paper Trails I was excited about electronic records, erms, and ecm. Why? Because now I have a clearer understanding of what they are how they work.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Canadian Perspective!.......2006-03-29

Concise, highly readable and immediately relevant are my top of mind reactions to Beelby and Roy's offering to the information overloaded, time starved records and information management professional. The business case for the wholesale adoption of electronic records management is expertly outlined and has the force of tried and true records management practice. A must-have title for anyone seeking the efficiencies of electronic records management and streamlined corporate compliance.

5 out of 5 stars Corporate Peace of Mind.......2006-01-10

The many stories and examples made the book very readable and accessible. It led me through the very complex area of document management and presented a step by step guide to identifying information management problems and implementing solutions. I particularly appreciated the insight that having an information management strategy will provide corporate peace of mind as well as a rapid return on investment.

This book made me aware that every document created, whether paper or electronic, might be considered a record and that every document must be filed in a system or deleted. It helped me to see the importance of making staff responsible for the documents they create, and that there must be a plan in place for saving, accessing and deleting documents. The authors explained the implications of current legislation and the costs and consequences of not managing information the right way.

I would recommend this book to any organization, large or small, that is considering improving the way it handles information or that is concerned with compliance issues.

Mexican-American genealogical research has long been an under-appreciated pastime, practiced by a select few. However, "Mexican-American Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trial to Mexico" brings a new resource into the public eye and provides the everyday American with suggestions for locating Mexican ancestors. The most important piece of information for the Mexican-American genealogist to obtain is the name of the place from which his or her Mexican ancestors came. In this respect, the search for Mexican roots is exactly the same as that of every other ethnic group that came to America. If you cannot locate your ancestral town, it will be very difficult for you to get past the border to learn more about your ancestors.

Donna Morales and John Schmal have collaborated in the presentation of this resource guide, which illustrates many documents from the family of Ms. Morales, both in Mexico and the United States. The utilization of information from birth and death certificates, newspaper obituaries, naturalization records, alien registration forms, and funeral records are discussed. All of these have the potential of helping the reader to determine the place of origin of his or her Mexican ancestor.

The authors also illustrate church and civil records from Mexico and show the reader the amazing amount of detail that the researcher will find in such records. The search for Indian roots in Mexico is also discussed in some detail. And, in the last chapter, the authors present an outline to help the reader get started and to organize his or her data. 2002, 148 pp., index, paper, $21.00 #S2139

      Book Description

Someone was calling his name. The boy stopped wriggling. His mother. No. She was supposed to be running in the other direction, decoying the Soldiers of God away from him. The boy’s father was the one who was supposed to circle back, and he wouldn’t do so unless the woods were clear. The boy edged up to the knothole. He blinked against the light. And the distinctive crack of a Sako TRG-21 sniper rifle shattered the glassy stillness of the April morning.

A 15-year-old boy, while hiding inside a hollow log, witnesses a violent antigovernment group, the Soldiers of God, murder his mother. His family joined the militia group when he was five and it’s the only existence he’s known. Today, both the boy and the Soldiers of God make a startling discovery about the boy’s father. The boy, unaware of his dad’s secret, tries to piece together clues from his childhood and must somehow find the strength and courage to escape and survive.

      2 out of 5 stars Bad Twist.......2007-02-13

This book was very promising and interesting, at first. It's a pretty scary story, about a fifteen-year-old boy who is being hunted through the woods by an anti-government militia group. For as long as he can remember, he and his parents have belonged to this militia group; he grew up among them and learned to shoot and hide and play war games, in preparation for the war with the American government. But now his father has been found out--he is actually an undercover FBI agent, and the militia group is now trying to kill him and his wife and son. The son has been separated from his parents, but he saw his mother's dead body. He now has to try to make himself safe, in the woods, surrounded by people who are fighting him.

I liked the realism of this book and the fact that the story paused several times to print a page or two of quotes from actual militia groups functioning today in our country. It's very scary, the people who are out there. However, there was a plot twist toward the end of the book that really ruined the whole story for me.

4 out of 5 stars The Paper Trail.......2001-02-21

15 year old Walker Morgan has lived in the small town of Red Cedar, Oklahoma, his parents run an antique store. The three of them are members of a militia group called the Soldiers of God. Every couple of weekends they have practice war games. These games practice bible study, wil;derness skills, and make a lot of there friends come together. You can tell his parents are hiding something him from him because he can tell they speak differently with him than around other people. He finally found out that his dad was part of the FBI. That made it really hard for him because he could not tell anyone what his parents did. A couple of weeks after he found out that his parents were in the FBI his mom was shot by a man in the militia. With out his mom he had to go through physical and physiological terrain which was really hard on him. I enjoyed the book a lot, it was pretty boring towards the beginning but it got a lot more exciting towards the end. The author used a lot of detail and expressed a lot of moods through her writing. While I was reading the book it kept me in my seat the whole time, except during the beginning. After the first couple of chapters it got really interesting and I wanted to read all of the time. "Paper Trail" was a really good book I would recommend it to twelve years of age and up. I would rate it about a three and a half because of the beginning.

      5 out of 5 stars What's the Truth?.......2000-11-10

Are your parents who you think they are? Do you know your family history? Are your friends in your town really your friends? Do you really know if what you believe is the truth? Hold on to your sanity and read this really scary, really exciting book about a boy that's confused by the world he's always known in a small town in Oklahoma.

Wow! It was a wild ride that this story took me on. I loved it! I think you will too. Read it today and see what it would be like if your world wasn't the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Pulls you in and keeps you there.......2000-11-04

This is the best book I have ever read...seriously. I'm not one to cry in books, but at the end of this one I was balling. The story is exciting and scary. It's fiction, but also had truth to it. The whole thing is scary because it's so real. From the moment his mother dies in front of his eye, to the last chapter (I'm not going to give anything away), it was hard to put down. It's not your ordinary book, more like a scary fairy tale. I had no clue what I was getting into when I first read it for a book report, but I'm really glad I did and I've read it twice after that. This is original, exciting, and cliffhanging. Read it.

3 out of 5 stars an oddly interesting book.......2000-06-09

Walker Morgan has lived in the isolated town of Red Cedar, Oklahoma for almost all his life. His parents seem normal and do all the expected contributions for their community. Of course, normal for this community consists of bible study, wilderness survival training, and weekend war games to name just a few. They are members of the Soldiers of God and this is everyday life for Walker's family -- at least in public. In private, Walker's parents behave differently. They read books for one thing, and speak and act differently then other other parents do. And why are there no scrapbooks or family photos lying around?

This is an oddly interesting book. The strange community and the disturbing normalness of Walker make for an odd combination. But it is when Walker discovers the truth about his family that things start getting interesting.

The basic plot is a bit too much like a movie of the week concept, but I did enjoy the the characterizations and the Ms Gilbert's writing style. And the Walker is a character that stays with you even after you put down the book.
