Book Description

From the expert team behind IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL and IT'S SO AMAZING! comes a book for younger children about their bodies — a resource that parents, teachers, librarians, health care providers, and clergy can use with ease and confidence.

Young children are curious about almost everything, especially their
bodies. And young children are not afraid to ask questions. What makes
me a girl? What makes me a boy? Why are some parts of girls' and boys'
bodies the same and why are some parts different? How was I made?
Where do babies come from? Is it true that a stork brings babies to
mommies and daddies?

IT'S NOT THE STORK! helps answer these endless and perfectly normal questions that preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school children ask about how they began. Through lively, comfortable language and sensitive, engaging artwork, Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley
address readers in a reassuring way, mindful of a child's healthy desire
for straightforward information. Two irresistible cartoon characters, a
curious bird and a squeamish bee, provide comic relief and give voice to
the full range of emotions and reactions children may experience while
learning about their amazing bodies. Vetted and approved by science,
health, and child development experts, the information is up-to-date,
age-appropriate, and scientifically accurate, and always aimed at helping
kids feel proud, knowledgeable, and comfortable about their own bodies,
about how they were born, and about the family they are part of.

5 out of 5 stars great series.......2007-08-28

this series of sex ed books for children are a great resource for parents who believe in open discussions about sexuality but don't know where to start with their children. each book is designed for a particular age group and addresses various aspects of sexuality appropriate for that age group. recommend highly.

5 out of 5 stars a great book for explaining, you know, everything to your kid.......2007-07-15

Lots of easy to understand graphics and fun text make this book a great starting place to talk with your young kid about the birds and the bees. There's way more in here than what I need for my 4 year old right now, but it covered the basic information enough to satisfy her curiousity and my concern over how to describe a little, to be accurate, and not say too much.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-07-09

Bought this to help me answer those questions my 7 year old was asking. The age for this is listed as 4. I don't think I would use it for a child that young but it was perfect for what I needed. The illustrations are great, very child friendly. The descriptions were not overly graphic. I would recommend it to any one to help open the discussion with their child.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on this topic for young kids that I found!.......2007-06-03

I had trouble finding the right book for my 4 years old, that is not too graphic and doesn't get into long explanations, becuase he has short attention span :-) However, this book has wonderful pictures, nicely presented, interesting for smaller kids. It is the best thing I found( and I looked at many, trust me!)!I will recommend it to all my friends, definetely a must for a toddler

5 out of 5 stars One of Three: Best for the Youngest!.......2007-03-13

This book came to me through the Our Whole Lives faith and sexuality curriculum. It has two partner books, for older age groups. All three are excellent, and have been "tested" with several friends' families.

I highly recommend this book, and its "older siblings," It's So Amazing and It's Perfectly Normal. Check out all three, then look for a church or organization that offers Our Whole Lives!

5 out of 5 stars Expands the imagination.......2007-08-28

I gave this book to friends with a two and a half year old. He loves it. In the beginning mom and dad "read" it to him and, of course, their stories were different which delighted him. And now he makes up his own stories.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent wordless book.......2007-05-30

This review is in response to a previous reviewer's comments that she did not realize that the book was wordless. She gave the impression that she was disappointed by receiving a wordless book, which her nephew cannot "read."

I agree that it should be more clear that this book is wordless, but I would encourage you not to discount it on this basis. The book is very funny, and wordless books help children develop linguistic and narrative skills. Have the child "read" the book to you, or his parents. You can also tell the story to him at exactly his linguistic level (or slightly above it), not with the one-size-fits-all vocabulary and syntax of other children's books. It would be great if you could notice where he struggles in his descriptions when reading the book, and then expand upon his attempts the next time you read it to him. If you give it a chance, you might like a wordless book.. and so might your nephew.

5 out of 5 stars love these books.......2006-10-22

i grew up with these books. When i was a child my mom would take me to the library and i could not wait to get them. Every week i would come home and look at the pictures and tell my own stories and even come up with new adventures for the boy and his frog. i can not wait for my son and daughter to open them up and begin their imagination adventure. THe pictures are so cute the trouble that frog gets into with the boy is too funny. For children with great imaginations and love to read but can't yet on their own let the adventures begin.

1 out of 5 stars No words.......2006-01-12

I ordered this book for my 3 year old nephew and was surprised to receive a book without any words. I think in the description of the book, rather than saying "English", it should say picture book. I am a fan of Mercer Mayer but preferred to buy one that this little boy could grow into in his reading.

5 out of 5 stars Children will love this book!.......2000-03-30

When I was a small child (three or four?) a family friend gave me a set of small books containing A boy, a Dog, a Frog, and a Friend. I was mesmerized by Mercer Mayer's classic pictures. While I liked having an adult share it with me, this was a book I most enjoyed looking at on my own. I cherished the set but over the years I lost all but one of the tiny books. I was delighted to find this small copy. A wonderful book for young imaginative children.

Book Description

In the South American town of Medellín, where drug dealers rule and hope is scarce, young assassins are in large supply. Take Shorty and Alberto: two hardened best friends from poor homes whose biggest dream is to see a live soccer match. These boys understand that the one true power they will ever possess comes in the form of a fully loaded Smith & Wesson. Pulling the trigger may not be a way out . . . but it's the only way to the top.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating plot inspired by true events.......2005-04-19

Sonny, aka Shorty, hasn't been in a classroom in years, and he spends his days doing odd jobs on the dangerous streets of Medellín, Colombia, South America. He and his best friend Alberto have a regular gig running cigarettes for a convenience-store owner, and in this line of work Alberto meets El Fantasma, a soft-spoken crime leader with a reputation for being merciless.

Soon after Alberto starts spending time away from Sonny, he shows up with a gun and fifty American dollars. Sonny knows Alberto is involved with something illegal, but rather than try to stop Alberto, he's intrigued with his friend's new secrecy and possessions. After all, the criminals in Medellín have better lives than everyone else. They have money and power and they know they're in control. Sonny, following Alberto's lead, convinces El Fantasma to take him on as an employee, specifically an assassin. What he doesn't know is that El Fantasma sees him as nothing more than a disposable object.

Don't be fooled by the title and setting of this book. Even though Sonny lives in poverty, abuse and violence, he is not a violent or evil person. In fact, he cares greatly for his friends and takes the assassin job because he believes it will help him support his mother. Matt Whyman doesn't beat the reader over the head with morality and lessons, either. Instead, he lets Sonny, a basically good kid who does the wrong thing for what he believes is the right reason, speak for himself.

BOY KILLS MAN is inspired by the true story of child assassins in Colombia.

This review is from a 10 year old.

This book is great because it shows that things arent always what they seem. Kristen has had a crush on Brian for.... 4ever,but she would rather die than tell him because she is afraid that might hurt their friendship if he doesnt like her back.but then one day, kristen sees this other guy mike that she likes a lot. Kristen thinks thats just great becuz she can have mike as a boyfriend, and brian as a best friend. But is Mike really what he seems?

      4 out of 5 stars Boy. Friend........2000-10-06

This book starts by saying how Kristin and Brian were at a party and Kristin spilled punch all over herself. Then Brian's bro Billy and his bud Mike Kalb come to pick up Kristin and Brian.Kristin looks like a wreck, and after they drop her off, the boys go to a movie. At the movie all of them are making fun of how Kristin looked. Then Billy starts saying how if Mike wants to get into a club, he has to take a girl to dinner at the club head's house and serve them dog food, indicating that they are comparing their date to a dog. Mike then says he will ask Kristin to it. Brian doesnt believe it, but the next day Kristin is so happy because Mike asked her out. Brian tries to tell her,but she wont listen to him.Find out what happens next by ordering your copy of Boy. Friend. today

1 out of 5 stars Wow what a great book!.......2000-03-17

Wow what a great book! Not! Little girls are going to startbeliving that JR. High is really like this book says it is. The onlygood thing about this book is that the popular girl Kirsten stands upfor another and herself when they are being humilated by high school boys. Another thing I would like to say about the series is that it is a bad influnce. I read swear words and encountered a so-called popular girl smoking her self to death in which it says nothing about how bad it is for your health. I'm very sure 7 year olds have a better knowledge on the causes than smoking than the author does. And please, spare me, but kids in Jr. High do not act like this. Stop trying to make them mini-adults! The author really needs to learn what teens are really like these days. We are not overly dramatic about everything but we also do have worse problems than a guy looking at us funny. Thank You for your time.

      Book Description

Matt Greene is 5'1", a nerd, invisible to girls, and has a best friend who's the biggest stud at Hannaford School in New York City. Babes practically trip over Matt to get to Keith, a guy so studly his smile is featured in a toothpaste ad. Sure, sometimes Matt gets a little jealous. And once, at the peak of Keith's studliness, Matt wishes his best friend's life would fall apart. A little extreme? Sure. But not as extreme as the changes that are about to take place....

      Born to Short

I read a book called born to short. The confessions of and eighth grade basket case. It was written by Dan Elish who also wrote the world wide dessert contests which he made into a musical. The book is mainly about a kid named Matt Greene who is a shot nerd and his best friends with Keith Livingston a stud/athlete/Adonis. .matt becomes really jealous because he is a non stud / non athlete/non Adonis. After the end of Keith's play Matt could not take any more. It is one of those great be careful what you wish for stories .when he wish bad luck on his friend
What I liked most about the book is how much it sounded how a real eight grader might feel. I am in the eight grade and I do feel some times like one kid gets everything like in the story y how matt Greene fells with his friend Keith Livingston. Matt is probably my favorite character, because he is really dictated to what he does. I wish I was as dictated to my baseball has he is with his guitar and he is the underdog in every thing he does
I really recommended this book to any one who wants to get in to the head of and eighth grader. If is an easy read but it is still really good. This is and good moral booster with real problems and a really friendship. I loved it

This book is about a 13-year-old, 5' 1", 8th grade, non-athletic boy named Matt Greene. He has a friend named Keith Livingston, but is one of the most athletic teenagers in the whole Hannaford School in New York. Keith decides to direct a rock musical of Romeo and Julie, but Matt does not think Keith will follow through with his idea. Keith follows through and Matt Greene actually gets a date with a girl his height, his age and is hot. When the play's date finally came Matt got excited. The night started with Matt happy and his date, Katie, happy until she saw Keith. Her mouth literally dropped and she instantly lost interest in Matt. Matt got mad and wished every girl in the school hated Keith. His wishes did not come true, but much worse things happened. Matt's life started going really well, but Keith's went down like a falling meteor. Matt's life got so good his dream came true, he made out with a girl for..."FIFTY-ONE LIP-SMACKING MINUTES!!! (Elish, p.112)" and it was not any kissing game, it was on their own freewill. He was the happiest man in the world. He finally told his friend about his wishes and Keith did not even care. His exact words were, "You thought your wishes screwed me up? Dude, how old are you, anyway? Five? (Elish, p.151)"
This book is a fiction-comedy story by Dan Elish, it is most likely for ages 13, and up because of the swearing in it. It is definitely not a hard book to read for teens. This book was very funny and encouraged me to keep reading, sometimes I even laughed aloud because it was so funny. Dan Elish really made it seem like he went through this, exactly, because of the realistic ness he used. I am a boy that detests reading books, but still liked to read this book without being told to read. If you have read Surviving the Applewhites, you might like this book. If you went out to look at the book, you might think it was a kid book, but never judge this book by its cover. My rating for this book is 5.0 out of 5.0.

4 out of 5 stars Are You In The Eighth Grade? Read This Book!.......2005-09-15

Born Too Short was a fun and interesting book about a kid named Matt Greene who is the short and jealous protagonist of his best friend, Keith Livingston. My favorite scene was when he goes to his relatives and meets this sweet girl that was short also. This kind of gets the book started. Towards the beginning we find himself wishing he was like Keith which is practically the stud of the eighth grade. After dating his relatives neighbor he starts to become more like Keith. After realizing who he has become he finds out that he really didn't know how to be a stud or popular kid because hes been a short nerd all his life. Will he stay being popular or will he go back to being a nerd? This book was very amusing and could probably relate to many kids his age. If you are in the teen or pre-teen age I think you would really like this book.

4 out of 5 stars Born Too Short : Put It on the Web.......2005-02-14

This book that i read, Born Too Short, was a very cool and funny book. This book was about an eighth-grade kid named Matt Greene who wants to be like his best friend, Keith Livingston, who is a the stud/athlete/Adonis of their Hannaford school. This book took place in New York City, mainly at Hannaford High School. One really cool psrt in this book was when Keith was performing his rock musical, Star Crossed, which seemed really good except for the fact that it had only 4 different chords in it. In the beginning of the book, Matt is really jealous of Keith and he makes a wish that his life would be Keiths' life. Throughout the book Matt starts to get some girlfriends and party more and he soon starts to realize that his wish was coming true, he was turning into a stud/athlete/Adonis as Keith was. One of the major problems for Matt is that he was a nerd, not anywhere close to being an athlete, and was barley known in school at all. Throughout the book, though, he starts to change and become more mature and get into sports and stuff. My recommendation for this book would be if you like to read about peoples life and how they deal with high school, this book would be great. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in their teens because that is what this book is based on mainly.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2003-11-03

Born Too Short: The Confessions of an Eight-Grade Basket Case by Dan Elish is a great book. Not only is it funny, but it shows meaning to how you get used to high school/junior high and it tells a story of who you are becoming as an indivivual. Well anyways, I am a kid and I think that this book got *****(5) stars! And check out her other books too. If you are into comdy/family(yourself)/problems and learning who you are, then defenitly read this book. It is fiction too, which I think is great.

        Book Description

Anti and Fabián are best friends and classmates at the Quito International School. Anti (short for Anthony) is the quiet, asthmatic English kid, and Fabián is the charismatic and flamboyant local. Anti lives in the dull ex-pat world inhabited by his parents, while Fabián lives with his cool, eccentric Uncle Suarez. Suarez, a storyteller par excellence, infects the boys with his passion for outlandish tales. Before long, the relationship between these two fifteen-year-olds becomes one conducted entirely through the medium of storytelling, and they lose sight of the boundaries between fact and fiction.
With confused emotions and a tenuous grip on reality, the boys embark on a quixotic voyage across Ecuador in search of an “Amnesia Clinic” that may or may not exist. A complex and beautifully crafted piece of storytelling about storytelling itself, The Amnesia Clinic explores how truth can be so very much more fanciful than fact, and how the collision between fantasy and reality can lead to harmful delusions.
