Book Description
How many times have you run a Google search that resulted in thousands of results? With over 8 billion pages online and more posted every day, the Web more than likely contains the information you’re looking for — if only you could find it. In Information Trapping: Real-Time Research on the Web, Internet-search-engine expert Tara Calishain makes researching more efficient and rewarding for anyone for whom the Web is an indispensable tool — academics, journalists, scientists, and professionals, as well as bloggers, genealogists, and hobbyists. She does so by teaching the latest techniques for building automated information-gathering systems. As an alternative to the typical one-time search for information, Tara demonstrates how readers can use RSS feeds, page monitoring tools, and other software to set up information streams of many different data types — from text to multimedia to conversations — for capture and review.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for market research.......2007-07-11
There is something for the beginner through to the advanced researcher in this book. Some of it will get dated fairly quickly as the web evolves almost faster than a book can be written. Her syntactical search tips for all the major tools are very valuable. I had never tried the intitle:keyword syntax prior to this, nor had I used cluster search tools, very cool. Lots of tips on how and where to see who is linking to your content plus where your content may be landing (without your permission!). A good working book, if you try out 1/3 of her suggestions your web searching capabilities will grow substantially. Very helpful for market researchers. She is quite prolific in this area.
A very good informative book.......2007-05-15
I found this book quite useful. I was already using RSS readers and all sorts of life hacks to make my life more efficient. When I came across this book, I thought it might be just what I was looking for to expose me to a whole new set of tools.
That's exactly what it did. Some tools were better than others, and some tools weren't really that good, but at least I know them. I am quite glad I bought it. Now I know a lot more about automatic trapping of information. With all the explosion of information, there is certainly a need for more automatic capture of knowledge. Highly recommended.
Information Trapping ROCKS!.......2007-05-12
This is a fantastic book. It is written clearly, and even though I run an Internet website, I have learned much.
Tara really knows her stuff. I would not hesitate to buy this book as it is possible the publisher will one do one printing. If that happens, you may have a tough time getting a copy.
She almost hit a home run with me but the ending was a triple.......2007-02-14
I was so impressed with the book. Tara's writing style is easy and user friendly. She gave a lot of great information. Sometimes overwhelming information but it was organized in a easy to read format. You could keep up with the information. I kept thinking , I hope she give us a lot of examples at the end on how I can become an information trapper.
She gave one example of someone looking for external information and one example of someone looking for internal information. One example! (320 pages of information, on acquiring tons of information and one example how you can use it.) I will take it, most writers are too lazy to even give you one example.
But she could have hit a home run with me giving me several examples of how you could become a basic, intermediate and advance information trapper and given us several case studies to tie it up.
At very least, give us an example of what she is doing. She talks about trapping information on autism. Then, give us an example of how she,an advance professional, uses all of the resources to trap information.
How does a professional does it.
And I had hope, that perhaps by registering my book on the website, she will give gives us case studies there.. If a person wanted to trap the subject of ovarian cancer , give us an example what she does. Remember, we are newbie, we have never done this before.
She has a website and a company , called ResearchBuzz and this is what Tara does for a living. I wish she would have spend a lot of time wrapping things up and give us plenty of examples how this is done.
I do recommend the book. Its an amazing book and I did learn many new things. A better ending will have been the frosting on the cake and a walk off home run. And a rating of 5!
Well written with some good techniques on automating research.......2007-01-17
In Information Trapping, Tara Calishain does a good job covering the basics of automated searching and information trapping, and even covers more advanced topics like re-publishing the information you find to a blog or Wiki. The writing is clear and concise, and the structure is easy to follow.
Chapters include:
What is Information Trapping
RSS Basics
Page Monitors
Email Alerts
Building Queries
Who's Linking to Your Site?
Trapping Topic-Based Information
Multimedia Trapping
Trapping tags and Conversations
Filtering the Inflow
Case Studies
Organizing What You Find
Publishing Your Information
Throughout the book, the author does a good job of mentioning the best sites you can use today to find and mine information, and explores some advanced search engine query syntax, and methods of emailing, filtering, and organizing the information your search will return.
If you are looking to extract data from the web, Information Trapping is a good primer on using automated methods to find information on the web.

Customer Reviews:
Great Research Book.......2003-06-23
It has a great number of photos that show details of western clothings, accessories, and other items. As a costume designer, I need to see the details for my research, and this book helped me a lot.
The book shows everything from hats, bandanas, leather cuffs, spurs, to boots. It also has a nice section on cowgirls.
Excellent reference manual for period wear........1999-03-19
I found the book both entertaining and informative. The photography and description of the material is excellent. As an amatuer historian on the subject, I found it to be educational as well as concise and pointing out subtle items which could have been overlooked by the casual observer. It is one of those books the reader can either read from cover to cover or open anywhere and dig right in.
It covers all aspects of turn-of-the-century attire and accouterments from the working cowboy to the Wild West Show performers. Excellent and entertaining.
Great reference for old west history buffs.......1997-11-06
This is a very good book for those interested in all the various accessories that the cowboy (and cowgirl) used. It is a good reference for old west living history groups that need to authenticate costume articles to a particular time period. The pictures are top quality.

Book Description
A gripping wilderness adventure and survival story
It was getting colder. Johnny pulled the fur-lined hood of his parka over his head and walked towards his own cabin with the sound of snow crunching beneath his boots.
“He should be back tomorrow,” he thought, as a star raced across the sky just below the North Star.
“He should be back tomorrow for sure.”
Seventeen-year-old Johnny Least-Weasel knows that his grandfather Albert is a stubborn old man and won’t stop checking his own traplines even though other men his age stopped doing so years ago. But Albert Least-Weasel has been running traplines in the Alaskan wilderness alone for the past sixty years. Nothing has ever gone wrong on the trail he knows so well.
When Albert doesn’t come back from checking his traps, with the temperature steadily plummeting, Johnny must decide quickly whether to trust his grandfather or his own instincts.
Written in alternating chapters that relate the parallel stories of Johnny and his grandfather, this novel poignantly addresses the hardships of life in the far north, suggesting that the most dangerous traps need not be made of steel.

Wonderfully mesmerizing!!!.......2007-01-10
John Smelcer is one of the most underrated authors of our time. This inspirational tale of courage in the midst of difficult circumstances was difficult to put down! The story serves to captivate the imagination while educating the reader into the unfamiliar traditions of Native Alaskan culture. This book is one of those rare works that is worth every moment spent reading! This poignant, heart-wrenching tale is worth keeping forever in your personal library.

this is a great story from one who lived with the indians during the time before their decline. this book is hard to put down.
A Story not to be Soon Forgotten.......2006-03-24
This is an amazing true story of a very lucky person. So much living in so short a period. It is a very good and interesting account of our western indians and how they lived. The book is a good read, hard to put down, and leaves the reader wishing there were more.
Bennet Stein is to be congratulated on presenting Andrew Garcia's story so well!
Bob....
Montana poetry.......2005-11-28
I was introduced to this book by my late beloved Uncle Floyd Rittenhouse, himself a lover of Montana history. Tough Trip is some of the most authentic Montana frontier literature. Besides, its a great read.
Reads like a novel.......2005-10-13
This memoir reads more like a novel than any memoir I've ever read, with a plot that revolves around Garicia's survival and fortunes in both business (trading, trapping) and in love. Garcia's prose voice is also singular and entertaining, like Twain crossed with Gabby Hayes. And for lovers of tragedy you will not find tragedy more heartbreakingly rendered in any novel you are ever likely to read. Notice the other reviews where readers say they want to buy more copies to give to friends, and those who said that they didn't want the story to end. I can vouch for these sentiments as they were my first impressions upon finishing this gritty and moving story.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The newer version of this book (which includes "1878-1879" in its title) for some reason does not include photos included in the original paperback version. These photos include shots of Garcia, his wives and love interests, and his territory, and they are valuable to the reader if for no other reason than they depict the beautiful dress of the women in the tribes Garcia encountered.
Paradise was tough to leave.......2001-05-13
I read this book in the early 1970's when I was the author's age, and have never forgotten it. Andrew Garcia writes with bittersweet longing for a time when adventure was freely available for those foolhardy enough to risk all. He writes in imperfect, but colorful prose about simpler times. Villains humorously drawl, "I'll plug ya if ya move." His self-depracating wit sounds like a real Huckleberry Finn in the wild west. The center piece of the tale is the massacre of the Nez Perce tribe by the U.S. Army; which Garcia relates from the first hand account of his beloved first wife (a Nez Perce herself). Fireside desire for beautiful native women in isolated wilderness, tempered by his Catholic background make for great romantic tension. Whether exactly true or not does not matter. It is a wonderful story of adventure, love, and sadness. I look forward to re-reading it to escape back to paradise.

Book Description
Almost every community has feral cats, animals too poorly socialized to be handled who cannot be placed into typical pet homes. In many of these communities, feral cats are seen to pose public-health, animal-welfare, nuisance-animal, or other problems.
Veterinarian Margaret R. Slater offers a comprehensive, compassionate review of the issues surrounding feral cats and of solutions to feral cat problems in communities large and small. She also provides a blueprint to veterinarians, feral cat caretakers, animal shelters, and public agencies for finding common ground in their approach to feral cats.
Community Approaches to Feral Cats is a handbook for action, a great resource, and a "must have" for anyone interested in stray, feral, and unowned cats.
Customer Reviews:
Too many cats...a continuous challenge.......2005-04-21
An important documented title with an extensive bibliography, directory of organizations, and index. Obviously, the supply of incompetent pet owners will never cease. The specific question is: How can the wandering cat (owned, stray, and feral) be humanely managed? This book discusses how organizations have made a difference by working with various components of their own community. The feral cat problem will not be solved, but this book will help animal kindness organizations put in place policies and action plans which involve education, implementation, and cooperation. Recommended for animal kindness organizations and public libraries. Also of interest: Living in Shadows by Ann K. Fisher.

Customer Reviews:
Survey of the Mountain Men.......2006-11-10
This is an excellent book to choose for a survey of the mountain man era. It covers all of the famous individuals, most with their own chapter. It also has some excellent presentations on various tools of the trade including their manufacture and use. In summary, a hard book to beat for a survey of that era and the individuals who made the era what is was.
Be warned, this is a teaser........2006-07-23
If you're interested in the lore of mountain men, then this book is for you. However, be warned that it contains just enough material to tease you and then, you'll want to continue your research with other books. This is the book that hooked me (well this and the movie Jeremiah Johnson). Laycock's book begins with a brief introduction on the history of St. Louis and the people that forged the youthful fur industry. Then, in the following chapters, you'll be introduced to a mountain man and his exploits per chapter. You'll read about Old Bill Williams, Jim Bridger, Jed Smith, Oz Russell, and more. Just to entice you further, Laycock includes these mini-chapters on how the mountain men survived such as: how he built boats, how he cached supplies, how he worked leather, started fires, built shelters, etc. Once I read this, my next books were on the lives of Osbourne Russell and Jed Smith. This is an interesting and tragic period in American History and one well worth researching.
Excellent Introduction to Mountain Men and their Lifestyle.......2006-01-23
Great introduction to the life of Mountain Men in a mere 240 pages. The book starts with several introductory chapters of how Mountain Men got started virtually with Lewis and Clark and then with various fur companies with such men as Manuel Lisa. The author then discusses their lifestyle, the mountains, what trapping was like, how they trapped beaver and their relationships with the Indians. The bulk of the rest of the book contains numerous short chapters on the most famous of the mountain men such as John Colter (perhaps the greatest), Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, Tom Fiztpatrick, Kit Carson, James Beckworth, the Sublette brothers and several more. What makes the book unique are numerous intervening short sections discussing in detail, with pictures, the equipment or materials the trappers used. Everything from Bull boats, the various types of rifles including the famous Hawken (flint versus percussion), traps, leather clothes, tools and how their leather covers were made as well mocassins. The only negative is that some of the tall tales, which the Mountain Men wre famous for, are not always discriminated. An example is James Beckworth's claim that he ran 95 miles in a single day to escape a band of Indians, and another claimed they covered 150 miles in two days. Stonewall Jackson's corps was famous for covering 30 - 35 miles on relatively good roads, thus it is impossible to accept these numbers by the trappers who were in broken country. But overall, an excellent introduction to Mountain Men, each of which seemed to have several stories about running into a grizzly bear.
Real Men.......2003-10-29
If you love stories of the old West, this book is a must read!George Laycock does a nice job of giving us a good overview of this time period in our Western History. The book tells much about those days of trapping and exploring when the West was an unknown and unmapped area. In addition to telling the stories of several individual characters like John Colter, Jim Bridger, Hugh Glass, Jeidiah Smith and others, the author takes time to explain the fur trapping business. There are several sections in the book explaining weapons, traps, boats, clothing, tools, etc. The result is that the reader gets a good insight into what these men did and how they did it. The one drawback might be that some of the character studies are a bit short, often leaving the reader wanting more information. However, for a general overview of an important time in our early history, this is a wonderful book. I'd like to see this as required reading in our schools.
A Great Mountain Man Book For Your Library.......2002-01-29
I purchased a hard back copy of this book in the early 1980's. It was then, and still is one of my favorite books on the life of the Rocky Mountain Fur Trappers of the early 19th century. Mr. Laycock did a great job of covering the life of these adventurous trappers. It would take volumes to cover it all but this book is a great condensed version. If I were going to recommend a single book to someone who had no knowledge of the Mountain Men, and wanted to learn of their lifestyles, this would be the book. It is an easy read, lots of great photos and illustrations, and it offers a high rate of accuracy. Also included are some brief biographies of some of the famous mountain men such as Jim Bridger and John Colter, and others. This book tells how they applied their trade and the hardships they faced doing it. This is a great book. I assume the paperback version offered will have the same photographs and illustrations. However, my hard back copy has great color in it and I don't know if the paper back will contain color photographs. Anyway, it is my opinion that this is a great book.

Book Description
Laser cooling allows one to slow atoms to roughly the speed of a mosquito and to control their motions with unprecedented precision. This elegant technique, whereby atoms, molecules, and even microscopic beads of glass, can be trapped in small regions of free space by beams of light and subsequently moved at will using other beams, has revolutionized many areas of physics. In particular, it provides a useful research tool for the study of individual atoms, for investigating the details of chemical reactions, and even for the study of atomic motion in the quantum domain. This text begins with a review of the relevant aspects of quantum mechanics; it then turns to the electromagnetic interactions involved in slowing and trapping atoms, in both magnetic and optical traps. The concluding chapters discuss a broad range of applications, including atomic clocks, studies of ultra-cold collision processes, diffraction and interference of atomic beams, optical lattices, and Bose-Einstein condensation. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students who have some basic knowledge of optics and quantum mechanics. An extensive bibliography provides access to the current research literature.
Customer Reviews:
Great book to get a good understanding of laser cooling........2000-06-15
Laser cooling and trapping techniques have given researchers new tools to explore the atom's dynamics and control. The book gives a good introduction to the forces that arise when an atom interacts with a light (laser) field, and puts a lot of emphasis on giving the reader an excellent idea of what's going on when atoms and photons interact.
Rather than giving all the details of the mathematical and quantum mechanics background that is needed to understand the subject the authors concentrate on giving a clearer picture of the real physics involved.
The book starts with a review of the quantum mechanics principles used to understand laser cooling and trapping, which serves as a good remainder for a person who already has a basic grasp of it.
Although all the mathematical analysis that shows how the formulas and mathematical expressions are derived is not done in the book, the presentation is sufficient to guide the readers interested in it do the work by themselves.
The book also has an excellent reference guide that an interested person can use to get all the mathematical and experimental details on the field.
