Book Description
On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong -- with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. Groopman explores why doctors err and shows when and how they can -- with our help -- avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can profoundly impact our health. This book is the first to describe in detail the warning signs of erroneous medical thinking and reveal how new technologies may actually hinder accurate diagnoses. How Doctors Think offers direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track.
Groopman draws on a wealth of research, extensive interviews with some of the country's best doctors, and his own experiences as a doctor and as a patient. He has learned many of the lessons in this book the hard way, from his own mistakes and from errors his doctors made in treating his own debilitating medical problems.
How Doctors Think reveals a profound new view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight into the machinations of medicine.......2007-10-18
I suffer from a rare chronic illness and went through nearly half a decade of frustrated and sometimes hostile doctors before finally receiving a definitive diagnosis. Reading this book gave me great insight into why many of my doctors were so frustrated with the fact that I had obvious symptoms, obviously skewed bloodwork, but no obvious cause. It is disheartening to realize how rampant sexism is in the medical profession, even when it comes to viewing patients, but this book gives some valuable lessons in how to navigate the theoretical medical minefield.
Excellent book, though slighly misnamed.......2007-10-18
For most of this book, a more appropriate though slightly more sensationalistic title would be, "How Doctors and Hospitals Make Mistakes". The author in a large section of chapters interviews various generalists and specialists, as well as drawing from his own experience as a patient, and largely focuses on how things are under or overdiagnosed (up to fifteen percent of the time in some cases, performed by superbly trained individuals). The author is sober in his judgement, and does a good job being neither overly condemning American medicine or being too defensive. There are small sections on other factors as well, such as the influence of money on medicine , well covered in other books, or patient-doctor relationship communication, but the main thrust is the concept of misdiagnosis, which is well worth the time and energy reading.
If you want to be, go to, or are a doctor...read this.......2007-10-16
It was simply very interesting to read how a doctor navigated their own medical problems. To learn how many different opinions there were, and how someone who could actually weigh those differing opinions, considered their options.
Which presents the problem: how do we laymen weigh those differing opinions. Dr. Groopman presents solutions to that question, all the while giving you a fuller perspective on what the title promises.
There is also careful criticism of how medicine is conducted which is important for everyone involved in medicine to ponder.
Everyone should read this.......2007-10-16
This is a good book that everyone should read. It will help them see how their doctors think and help identify potential flaws, which would lead to more effective disease treatment.
A great look into the real world of medical care........2007-10-07
As an incoming first year medical student, I wanted to read a doctor's take on the behind-the-scenes work of medicine. What I got was an eye-opening and honest look at doctors, not as white-coated diagnosing machines, but as human beings with faults who are just trying to do their best. It is an excellent book both for those in medicine or who are going into medicine, as well as for laypeople who just want to get a better idea of where their doctor is coming from the next time they have an appointment.

HOR-RI-BLE!!! .......2007-09-26
I was misled by the reviews of this book. I am mad I bought it. This book is horrible! Too much unneeded information. I had to skip to the end I was sick of hearing about British people and how they live and what they're saying who cares! Stick to the story! Not a good one Eric, very disappointed.
NEEDED COFFEE.......2007-09-24
I love EJD, but this was not his best. This book bored the living daylights out of me. It took forever for it to get going? The plane ride was too long. I'm glad that a friend let me borrow this book(she didn't like it either!!!! Won't read or buy the 2nd one.
Walking with Enemies.......2007-09-21
This book is hot, hot, hot. Very unpredictable and fascinating, I give it 2 thumbs up!!!!!!! Mr. Dickey you are the best.
Penthouse personals.......2007-09-17
Apparently I was supposed to guess that SLEEPING WITH ENEMIES was the first of two novels along with WAKING WITH ENEMIES and that if I wanted to know the ending of the first I had to read the second. I don't see any reason why a resolution would take more than a hundred pages. The book is rather short as is.
Unfortunately, that's not the only thing wrong with the book. Most authors skirt the issue when dealing with sex scenes, or come at them from a different angle. Not so with Eric Jerome Dickey. His rival those in the Penthouse personals. By the time we get to the third one, they've lost all the luster they might have once had.
Otherwise, this is not a bad novel. Dickey tries to show us why his contract killer is the way he is. His mother was a prostitute for one thing, and she was the one who started him on the road to perdition. She also sexually abused him, and he wants to see her dead. There are also some likable characters, especially Lola, the motormouth woman he meets on the plane to London and Mrs. Jones, who just won't stop crying. Of course, he beds both of them.
The other plot line is that Gideon (He got the name from a hotel Bible) is himself being hunted by another hit man as part of a clean-up operation from Gideon's involvement in the murder of The Big Bad Wolf, a rapper at war with another hiphop artist named Sledgehammer. There is an especially gruesome flashback, where we see Gideon dispose of The Big Bad Wolf and his posse with a sledgehammer.
Dickey is also adept at describing London. For one thing, I had no idea there were still red light districts in the city. It sounds a lot like Amsterdam, another city Dickey takes us to in flashback.
Perhaps it's my own fault for not reading the Amazon synopses, but I don't plan on ordering the second book. By the time I'd get around to reading it, I would've forgotten about the first one.
Loved it!!.......2007-09-06
This book was excellent. Intrigue, mystery, sex, lost love, etc. It has a fast pace and I couldn't stop listening (had it in the audio version). I can hardly wait for the sequel. It's already ordered.

Excellent resource.......2004-10-28
This text is a fantastic resource for the practitioner new to the treatment of venous diseases. It is an indispensible tool in setting up a phlebology practice. The appendices of office practice tools (i.e.-eval forms, consents, manufacturers) was a wonderful suprise. Bravo!
The best book avialable for the subject at this time........1997-02-20
Dr. Goldman covers the topic from A-Z. He cover both the smaller (spider) and larger verins in his book which is not a large volume despite its price. He provides the young physician with a concise, orderly manner with whihc to approach the problems in his practice, the tools, medications, methodology and and the forms both for record keeping and legal implications. It is a "turn key" program that if done with attention to detail will serve the new pracitcioner of this medical discipline well, whether dermatologist or plastic surgeon

Learn Algebra the Easy Way.......2007-08-10
This is an excellent book to learn the basics of Algebra even if you are not a student. It explains everything and it includes a CD ROM with additional resources and exercises.
Decent book, Better CD-ROM.......2007-05-05
I found this book on my school's web site for $142, but bought it from Amazon for $97. Shipping was fast and free, the way I like it.
The book does a decent job of explaining the principles and definitions you need to perform algebra, but it's somewhat boring. (Of course, IT IS an algebra textbook)
I'm attending classes at an online college right now and the facilitator I had for this class was horrible, so I relied heavily on the textbook. There are some good worksheets in the book that you can do for practice and then check your answers in the back of the book.
The best part of this package is the CD-ROM that comes with the book. If you have a visual learning style or just want to see things explained with examples, the CD-ROM has several video exaples for each section of the book. It also has worksheets and evaluations that you can use to chart your progress and practice on your own.
I don't think the book is worth anywhere near $142 or even $97, but it was required for my course. The good news is that now that the class is just about over I can use the book as a paperweight or as a sedative.
I can't really complain though, since this was all I had to rely on for this entire class as far as instruction and guidance goes.
Product is great but shipping was LATE!.......2007-01-12
The product is great and the CD that came with it is unopened as promised. Although I'm happy with the product, I'm not happy with the fact that I paid for 2-day shipping on a Saturday and didn't receive the book until Thursday. Probably won't be using that anymore...
A real page turner. One of the most exciting works today........1999-09-19
The plot is intricate, and the mystery deepens until the last few pages of the text. The authors richly deserve the highest praise for their tireless efforts.
Book Description
Basic Marketing 16e builds on the foundation pillars of previous editions – the four Ps framework, managerial orientation, and strategy planning focus. 16e builds upon its pioneering beginnings that introduced the “four Ps” to the introductory marketing course. The unifying focus of Basic Marketing has always been on how to make the marketing decisions that a manager must make in deciding what customers to focus on and how best to meet their needs. Over many editions there has been constant change in marketing management and the marketing environment. Some of the changes have been dramatic, and others have been subtle. As a result, the authors have made ongoing changes to the text to reflect marketing’s best practices and ideas. Throughout all of these changes, Basic Marketing and the supporting materials that accompany it have been more widely used than any other teaching materials for introductory marketing. Consistent with our belief in continuous quality improvement, this edition has been critically revised, updated, and rewritten to reflect new concepts, new examples, and recent “best practices.” This edition extends the strategy planning approach, integrating concepts tightly with the marketing strategy planning model.
Customer Reviews:
A little wordy........2007-10-01
I needed this book for my Marketing class at CSUDH. It's a good book, but I really feel it could be half as long as it is and still be useful. It tries to offer a lot of information, and it does, but it also winds up repeating a lot of the same concepts over and over. Shorter would be better. And of course, cheaper would be great!
Great experience.......2007-03-09
The book arrived quickly and was in perfect condition.
Thank you =)

Book Description
The 15th Edition of Basic Marketing by Perreault and McCarthy builds upon its pioneering beginnings that introduced the “four Ps” to the introductory marketing course. The unifying focus of Basic Marketing has always been on how to make the marketing decisions that a manager must make in deciding what customers focus on and how best to meet their needs. Over many editions there has been constant changes in marketing management and the marketing environment. At the crux of Basic Marketing by Perreault and McCarthy is the thorough integration of the latest marketing themes, topics, and examples – all of which have been carefully blended with the text’s traditional strengths of clear, accessible communication, a focus on management decision-making in marketing, and the complete coverage of special topics like technology, ethics, global, relationship marketing, and services. Another key advantage of Basic Marketing is author Bill Perreault himself. Where most principles of marketing texts rely on a host of separate supplement authors, Perreault is the highly involved with or creator of every item in the carefully integrated, robust package. This unique involvement ensures quality, accuracy, and reliability.
Book Description
Why do some people find and sustain hope during difficult circumstances, while others do not? What can we learn from those who do, and how is their example applicable to our own lives? The Anatomy of Hope is a journey of inspiring discovery, spanning some thirty years of Dr. Jerome Groopman’s practice, during which he encountered many extraordinary people and sought to answer these questions.
This profound exploration begins when Groopman was a medical student, ignorant of the vital role of hope in patients’ lives–and it culminates in his remarkable quest to delineate a biology of hope. With appreciation for the human elements and the science, Groopman explains how to distinguish true hope from false hope–and how to gain an honest understanding of the reach and limits of this essential emotion.
Customer Reviews:
The wisdom of hope .......2007-09-30
In July 1975 Jerome Groopman entered his fourth and final year of medical school at Columbia and joined the surgical team headed by Dr. William Foster. The first patient he encountered was an Orthodox Jewish woman who had lost over one- hundred members of her family in the Holocaust. She was suffering from a very advanced case of breast- cancer. In speaking with her Groopman learned that she had been ill for a long time, had felt pain for a long time but had reported it to no one. She was reluctant to tell him why, but at some point in the course of the treatment she let him know the answer. She felt herself to be a sinner because of untoward thoughts towards her employer. She felt that her illness was a punishment and therefore deserving. Despite her having three children and a husband she was living in total hopelessness. She resisted treatment and in a relatively short time , died.
This incident raised in Groopman's mind the whole question of patients' attitudes, and what part they have in the physician's treatment. He began to sense that this was a neglected area of study and that physicians were not properly trained in fully understanding their patients.
In another case- history later on Groopman working as an assistant for a dedicated physician saw that his employer's technique was to conceal from terminal patients the bitter truth- in order to let them enjoy as best they could the remaining time left. However in one instance concerning a mother and daughter in which the mother was terminally ill, the concealing of the information turned out to be insulting and humiliating to the daughter. Groopman understood from this incident that coddling patients with false hope was also a mistaken way.
In still another incident Groopman saw a doctor- friend of his who all the physicians on the case advised to no longer take radiation treatments as his situation was completely hopeless. The patient insisted on continuing with the treatment and had a remarkable recovery , a 'cure' in which the cancer completely left his system.
In still another case- history Groopman speaks about a courageous patient who without fear rationally evaluated her situation at every stage, was totally realistic in her evaluations, had hope for her recovery and also because of her religious faith, hope for the world- to- come.
In another important instance Groopman talks about his own twenty - year struggle with pain and how he was cured not by a medical treatment but by the wise recommendation of a physician who taught him to move in spite of and against the pain.
All these cases taken together make for complicated understanding of the relation of 'hope ' to 'recovery'- and are valuable not so much because of pointing to some simplistic conclusion and moral but because they show not only the complexity , difficulty, of treating and contending with serious illness but also how central human attitude and wisdom is in facing life's most difficult tests.
A must for any professional in the field of oncology.......2007-09-09
An excellent account of an oncologist's own experience, during his multiple years of training and practice, with a description of actual cases and how the different outcomes of these cases changed the author's approach and understanding of patients with serious and terminal illnesses -mostly cancer-.
This book is the product of the author's emotional journey through understanding how differently patients react to their own diagnoses and circumstances, and why physicians have to treat patients individually, and not as cases of this type or another type of cancer.
It is clear from the stories, that he realized that many patients do not want to hear about statistics, they don't want to know their possibility of survival in 5 years or 10 years in percentages, because all human beings hold on fast to hope, and this is what makes them survive in some incredible cases.
As a physician myself, I recommend this book to all medical students, all students of oncology, and professonals in the field. Please, don't forget that the last thing that a patient loses is hope, and in a background of truthfullness, try to help them hold onto this last resource, which may benefit their immune systems in the struggle against the disease.
Fascinating, Humbling, Inspiring, Educational.......2007-07-13
The Anatomy of Hope is an excellent book that will shock, humble and inspire you. So many books in this genre are thinly-veiled attempts by the authors to push forward their particular view of life (or perhaps more accurately, their view on how life should be led), and quickly become preacher-like and boring. This is not one of those books. It is filled with grim realities, interesting academic observations, tie-ins to what has become the author's take on life and how those facing serious health issue might cope (again, without lecturing), and, in some cases, NOT cope. If nothing else, reading this book will open your eyes to the unbelievable crises a lot of people on this planet face every day, and if you are not one of them, will (should) make you feel very humble and very grateful. On the practical side, the book is inexpensive and a very easy, quick read. Buy it. Although some of the talking heads who do reviews for a living have managed to find areas of the book to criticize (SURPRISE!), you are not going to regret dedicating a few hours of your life to this really incredible narrative. The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness
Enjoyable.......2007-07-11
I like the way Dr. Groopman writes and have always enjoyed his pieces in the New Yorker. This book was no different.
Medicine for the human spirit.......2007-06-09
This is a powerful and illuminating book. It's aim is to reveal and chacaterise the place that hope has in giving patients the will to put themselves through sometims painful therapy or to survive the dark times of illness; to keep going against odds. Groopman is a very intelligent, observant, self-reflecting practitioner, and he has learnt deeply from his mistakes and successes. The book is beautifully written, and is full of gripping and insightful stories about patients and doctors. It's a stirring call for medical practice which goes well beyond mere evidence and professional, technical expertise - embracing the wholeness of the patient in all its complexity.
