Book Description
A cry echoed through the Forest.
He froze.
It was not the yowl of a vixen, or
a lynx seeking a mate. It was a man.
Or something that had once been a man.
With a creeping sense of dread,
Torak watched the light between the
trees begin to fail. . . .
Torak is a boy apart. A boy who can talk to wolves. A boy who must vanquish the Soul-Eaters . . . or die trying.
As the Moon of No Dark waxes large, the clans fall prey to a horrifying sickness. Fear stalks the Forest. The very breath of spring seems poisoned. No one knows the cause—and only Torak can find the cure.
His quest takes him across the sea to the mysterious islands of the Seal Clan. Here Torak battles an unseen menace and uncovers a betrayal that will change his life—forever.
Spirit Walker is a spellbinding story of fellowship, treachery, and self-sacrifice that takes the reader further on the journey that began in Wolf Brother.
Customer Reviews:
Even better than the first one!.......2007-10-10
I have read all four of the published Chronicles of Ancient Darkness and still enjoyed Spirit Walker the most. It continues the story of its predecessor by revealing even more of the mysteries surrounding Torak's upbringing and his father's death. Moreover, you begin to learn of Torak's special power that isn't at all hinted at in Wolf Brother, but you must wait until Soul Eater before you can fully appreciate what that power can do. I found Spirit Walker the most enjoyable of all the books due to its faster pace. It contains the fewest "lulls" (where the story drags a bit) of all of the titles in the series. If you have read and enjoyed Wolf Brother, then you will definitely want to read the rest of the series.
I enjoy the series so much that I couldn't wait another year until the fourth book, Outcast, was published in the U.S. So I ordered it from Amazon.co.uk soon after it was released and paid more than double the U.S. price so I could read it now. That's a testament to just how much I enjoy this series.
Gets kids reading.......2007-05-13
My nephew is 10 and would typically choose anything else to do other than read. Being a teacher myself, I often give my neices and nephews books as part of their Christmas/birthday gifts. A student of my own recommended the first book in this series (Wolf Brother) to me, so I bought it for Colin. My sister had to practically force him to sit down and read, but once he got started he loved the book! That's when I bought him the second and third in the series - hoping to keep him going on it. When they arrived at his house, and he saw that they were in the series (and hard cover) he was thrilled! He's been showing off his collection of books to everyone, and has his nose inside reading to make his way through to the next in line! I'm looking forward to#4 and #5 coming out here so I can send those to him as well. I'm ecstatic that he's finally found a book he'll read form beginning to end, not to mention a series. It's good to have reading be a hobby in your life, and I'm so happy this series has shown Colin that reading can be enjoyable. I would recommend this book and the entire series to anyone interested in getting kids reading. It's an adventurous and exciting series!
Excellent well-written book.......2007-03-07
Spirit Walker is the second book in the series: Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. The story starts with Torak who is currently staying with the Raven Clan. A horrible sickness is spreading through the forest and Renn believes that Torak will be able to find the cure. He then ventures off on his own without Renn or Wolf to try to find the cure in the Deep Forest. He thinks they might help him find the cure because his mother was Red Deer Clan. The Forest Horses who he encounters tell him to turn back. He ignores their warning and presses on. He is captured by two members of the seal clan. They take him to their island where he meets the leader, Islinn, and the clan mage who SUPRISINGLY ENOUGH has half of his body burned.
The story continues with lots of action and adventure. You find out that the clan mage, Tenris, was actually Fa's brother. You also find out that Fa was a soul-eater. He tried to back out, that's why he was killed. Tenris was also the soul-eater who summoned the demon that was placed in the bear that killed Fa. You also find out that Torak is a spirit walker. This means that his spirits can leave his body and enter that of another human or animal. He tries to comprehend this as he also faces Tenris, his evil uncle, who his later eaten by a whale.
Michelle Paver is an excellent author. Way to go! Keep writing!

Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World
by William Walker Atkinson
In this New Thought classic, Atkinson looks at the law of attraction in the thought world. He points out the similarities between the law of gravitation and the mental law of attraction. He explains that thought vibrations are as real as those manifesting as light, heat, magnetism and electricity. The difference is in the vibratory rate which also explains the fact that thought vibrations cannot usually be perceived by our 5 senses.
Contents: Law of attraction in the thought world; Thought-waves and their power of reproduction; About the mind; Mind building; Secret of the will; How to become immune to injurious thought attraction; Transmutation of negative thought; Law of mental control; Asserting the life force; Training the habit mind; Psychology of the emotions; Developing new brain cells; Attractive power-desire force; Law, not chance.
Your Invisible Power
by Genevieve Behrend
This is a really inspiring book. It gets you focused on your dreams and goals with very simple to understand directions. I encourage everyone to read and apply the information with a spirit of enthusiasm and watch your life change!

Not just for kids!.......2007-09-12
Not just for kids! The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series is many wonderful things - adventuresome, compelling, a revelation of ancient ways of life. This book is no exception. It moves quickly. I'd recommend this and the series to anyone.
spirit walker:Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #2.......2007-08-11
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters are vivid and you are on the edge of your seat until you find out what happens to them. A must read. The first book in this series is very good also.
Mesmerizing for Children & Parents alike........2007-03-26
My 1st grader requested Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #1 from a school book order form. I ordered it before realizing it was actually a reading level geared towards 5th graders. The best mistake I ever made! We then visited our friend www.Amazon.com & purchased Chronicles of Ancient Darkness #2: Spirit Walker. It was hypnotizing in it's visualization. It makes my son and I feel as though we are Torak & Renn with Wolf 6000 years ago! We read these books through one or two chapters a night. We're reading the 'extras' in the back of the book that include information about survival of the people & creatures from prehistory as well as an exerpt from Book #3: Soul-Eater!
Suspense and Drama on Seal Island.......2007-03-23
I loved the setting: the seal islands were great. A very suspenseful story. It made me want to read more and more.
This is the best of the three chronicles--so far.

Book Description
To capitalize on the resurgence in popularity of preppy style as well as theme drink books, Tipsy in Madras trips down memory lane to reveal a time when clothes were bright and the drinks were strong.
Remember the days of sipping Cape Codders in Cape Cod? Bloody Marys over brunch in SoHo? And Old Fashioneds at the Harvard Club?
No?
Doesn't matter. The 80s may be over, but the preppy attitude that pervaded the era lives on in classic drinks with a kick. Tipsy in Madras will help readers "prep" their bar, discern the brands to have on hand, mix their drinks, and delve into the timeless lifestyle. Wanna-bes and prepster hold-outs will get insight into preppy drinking fashion, customs, literature, and more-and answers to such essential preppy questions as:
Do Brahmins drink beer?
To monogram or not to monogram?
Where does one find authentic prep school mugs?
What are the best preppy movies to drink by?
Customer Reviews:
Perfect beach read!.......2006-11-29
This is great for any true prep, especially at the beach. I took this along to Hilton Head with my fellow preps and it made us long for the 80s, thirsty, and eventually very intoxicated! This makes a good companion to the Official Preppy Handbook.
Preppy in Madras.......2006-11-12
I love this book. Makes me all nostaglic for the 80s!
Really Good!.......2006-03-13
The book is a good book in the sense of what the subject is: drinks for the preps. There was mention of what to "wear" and such, but it didn't get into that, look for other sources like the Preppy Handbook for that. Otherwise, a really good book, fun to read, recipes, and a great sense of humor! You can tell that the authors had fun writing this book.
Preppy memories, anyone?.......2005-12-24
To really appreciate a book about preppy drinking in the 80s, you had to have been a preppy drinker in the 80s! Reading TIM brought me right back to the days of drinking Tab & rum while pulling all-nighters in prep school and college...This is a PERFECT gift for a fellow preppy friend =D.
Booze for Blueboods.......2005-05-03
Most of this book is funny and dead-on accurate, however the appendixes on movies, music, and especially books were complete drivel. The excerpts from prep school brochures were a nice touch if somewhat random. "Tipsy" is a good intro to drinking even if you're no fan of preppiness. Also, it makes a great companion to Lisa Birnbach's peerless "Official Preppy Handbook", which touched on alcohol but didn't go into the detail of "Tipsy".

Book Description
"I am about to tell you a most unusual story, a chronicle of something that happened to me while I was living on the flank of an active volcano on the island of Hawai'i. I'm a scientist. I mention this because I do not feel that I was in any way predisposed for what was about to occur. In fact, my scientific training would seem to have preprogrammed me against such an experience." -- From Spiritwalker
The astonishing true story of an anthropologist's quest into a spiritual world of magic, mysticism, and meaning.
Not since Castaneda's tutelage under the Yacqui Indian guide Don Juan has there been a spiritual autobiography quite like Spiritwalker.
Hank Wesselman's incredible story of a series of encounters that would forever change his life began with what he at first tried to explain away as particularly vivid dreams, but which grew increasingly intense and insistent, ultimately propelling him on twelve fantastic journeys across time and space. Over the next three years, his journeys proved to be far more important than mere reason could explain. Eventually, Dr. Wesselman became convinced that he'd been granted a visionary encounter with what tribal people from millennia past have called the "spirit world."
During his epic travels, Dr. Wesselman met shape-shifting entities, spirit helpers, and guardians, and found himself traversing a mental, physical, and
spiritual landscape on a path intersecting that of a fellow traveler, a Hawai'ian kahuna mystic named Nainoa. Five thousand years into the future, Nainoa had been sent by his Chief on a journey into what used to be America, a once-powerful land of machines and magic, from which no previous voyagers had ever returned. What did Nainoa seek from Dr. Wesselman? What did the anthropologist have to learn about his own world from this exotic traveler from another time and place? Together, scientist and mystic are initiated into knowledge of non-ordinary levels of reality and given foreshadowings of imminent environmental, political, and spiritual challenges to their civilization. Without abandoning his scientific objectivity, Dr. Wesselman abandoned himself to the mystical, sometimes frightening, yet always luminous experiences that brought him beyond the boundaries of ordinary consciousness. The result is a fascinating and suspenseful adventure, an exciting and important archeological discovery, and the story of how a hard-headed scientific-realist stumbled on an important piece of the puzzle of human evolution.
Socially urgent and disturbingly prophetic, Spiritwalker has a universal mythic resonance and an undeniable relevance for today as it challenges our
perceptions of our world, our reality, and our future.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-10-02
I don't believe the author is telling a true story. It sounds like he's intelligent enough and did some decent research before trying to publish this to a naive audience. Even as a fictional account, this book falls flat for me. The writing is tedious at times and repetitive.
There are things that don't add up. For example, it's 5000 years into the future, and there are accounts of Iesu (Jesus) and Kotama (Gautama Buddha) still being recounted by 7 foot tall, burnt sienna skinned, blue eyed Hawaiians who live on the Western Coast of the United States. Only, it's no longer the United States, and modern civilization has all but disappeared, or at where he's located. And the Hawaiians don't seem to remember anyone other than 'the navigator Cook'. He uses italicized words like 'enjins' and 'siti' to describe engines and cities. I think he's pulling the reader's leg and trying to infuse a certain je ne sais quoi by using seemingly foreign words in italics.
He also loves the manipulative, suggestive open-ended question formula to evade rational explanation but nevertheless leave the reader assuming a conclusion that is never proved (e.g., Could it be that I had passed some test during that first altered-state experience back in Berkeley and was now granted access?) Could you ask more leading questions that beg the answer without later answering them in any meaningful way...?
Finally, he likes to stress his scientific, intellectual, rational, disbelieving nature and training. He doth protest too much.
The beginning of a thrilling trilogy!.......2007-07-13
Spiritwalker is the first book of a trilogy. The next two books are "Medicinmaker," then "Visionseeker."
In Spiritwalker, Hank Wesselman beautifully illustrates his initial, extraordinary visionary experiences with using a writing style which is easy to follow and often peppered with humor. The concepts presented in the book -- such as out-of-body consciousness and shamanism's healing methods, etc. -- are thoroughly investigated and explained to the best of the author's ability, with the Western, scientifically-oriented perspective in mind. Hank's "inner scientist," stemming from his previous education in the Anthropological field, compels him to come up with rational and logical reasons as to how and why these extraordinary experiences are taking place. Using scientific reasoning and traditional Hawai'ian beliefs, he is able to explain (was able to explain to me, at least) what would normally be unexplainable.
The content of the entire trilogy generally includes: 1) his first encounters and reactions to his initial out-of-the-ordinary experiences, 2) his understanding and explanation of these experiences through a scientific and traditional Hawai'ian Kahuna's perspective, 3) an extraordinary account of his repeated "journeys" to a possible future Earth, seeing it through another man's eyes, and 4) several undeniably relevant and important proposals which connect his experiences to our present time and global situation.
I appreciated Hank's openmindedness and sincerity when he approached his difficult-to-explain/understand experiences. Both his experiences and perspective inspired me to look at my life and future in a new way. The Spiritwalker trilogy has made a significant difference in my life. I highly recommend all three books.
Prophetic vision of a possible future.......2007-06-28
Given that the original hardcover came out in the early 90s, it's amazing how prophetic this book has become. I noticed today a science article on MSNBC about the Greenland ice cap. It may completely melt in 200-300 years and raise the world's ocean levels by at least 23 feet! That doesn't even take into account melting of Antarctic ice. Is this book a true story? I don't know. I do know that the future 5000 years from now may very well be as described in Spiritwalker.
Great read, but doesn't add up.......2006-12-10
I would have liked to have been able to take this book exactly as written. It would have been an amazing story. And its wake-up call about the upcoming global catastrophe due to overpopulation, resource exhaustion, and runaway greenhouse effect, is sorely needed.
Unfortunately, there were just too many little things that finally added up to make me say it had to be largely fictionalized. Yes, perhaps some events were based on some real experiences. But -
Nainoa, the man from 5000 years in the future where society has fallen back to a Neolithic level, at one point inhabits the body and mind of a modern American, seeing his house, family, car etc. His descriptions are just too contrived, too pat. You can hear the author thinking to himself "now how might he describe that..." The car in the driveway "stood on four black wheels made of some hard yet resilient substance." How did Nainoa know it was resilient?
It's so convenient that 5000 years from now, the language has totally changed - that's OK - but words like engine and city have survived? And the future Neolithic man has been taught "Old English" to the extent that he can read and understand the word "Liberty" on a coin that has made it down the millenia? Our written alphabet was still known, when our cultural history was lost?
Again - the cities of the West Coast have been buried under layers of dirt and forest growth. But here and there are clusters of "mounds" where the top of a chimney may show through...OK, if suburban houses aren't that deeply buried, what happened to the skyscrapers? There would still be a lot more showing, ruined though they would be.
Nainoa journeys to spend time with the Ennu, a group very different from his own. He is learning their language, but in describing to the Ennu William his journey getting there, "he struggled to name or describe in Ennu terms many of the things he had seen." But a few paragraphs later, he is having a deep philosophical discussion with William with no trouble at all!
There are similarities to Castaneda's accounts of "nonordinary reality" but also differences. Wesselman describes "guardians" of the entrances and also "spirit guides" or "companions." None of them, however, are malevolent or hostile - at worst they are indifferent or neutral. Most others who have ventured in these realms warn of the real dangers from terrifying entities.
It's a shame, because I do believe in the reality of shamanism, and its power to access other levels than our material world. I give two stars for imagination and for well-crafted writing.
Super Entertaining!!!!.......2006-07-23
The title of this book called upon me! I was intrigued by it, although when the author talked in "anthropologist language" I felt out of place, but then the story became so interesting, it reaches down to your soul, something inexplicable, I identified so much with the story that the ending left me longing for so much more. Excellent book, I would recommend it anytime!!!!!!!!!!!

Restful Reflections.......2002-08-04
We live in a rush-rush world filled with a myriad of activities that demand our time and challenge our priorities. More and more people are talking about balance, life-work balance. A theologian and a corporate executive (a nice balance in itself) got together and wrote a little book that may bring you some serenity and perspective.
Life is Not Work is one of those little books you often see next to the cash register in book stores or gift shops. An impulse buy. Except this one is more expensive ... It offers more than just little quotations, though. The little essays, personal stories, make this book a cross between a quote book and a Chicken Soup for the Soul volume.
The authors bring us 137 of these short, easy-to-read essays, organized into twenty categories. Listing the categories will give you a sense of the content you'll discover: Balance, Time, Work, Living, Play, Spirituality, Wholeness, Empowerment, Strength, Joy, Stress, Materialism, Repose, Wonder, Nurture, Happiness, Authenticity, Integrity, Community, and Fulfillment. Have I whetted your appetite? Consider the background and perspective of the authors and slide into your easy chair to think about the balance in your life. Forewords from the authors will help you understand who they are and where they're "coming from." A bibliography completes the book, giving the reader an extra sense of connection to the messages and their sources.
This book will rest comfortably, waiting for its next opportunity, next to the bed in our family's guest room.
Be my guest. Read this book gently and contemplate your life-work balance.

Mindless exercise may improve circulation and trim fat, but what does it do for the being within the body? Instead of zoning out (reading magazines on the treadmill, planning shopping lists while jogging), Carolyn Scott Kortge encourages readers to zone into the exercise through mindful walking. Like yoga, spirited walking is a form of meditation in motion, offering physical rewards as well as mental and spiritual benefits. The wonderful irony of conscious exercise is that by giving the mind a steady focus, you get the rest you seek, writes Kortge. Kortge, who has extensive journalism experience, offers clarity and personal anecdotes, as well as specific advice. Topics include breath work, affirmations, how to structure a meaningful walking routine, maintaining motivation, and embarking on a walking pilgrimage. --Gail Hudson

The Spirited Walker.......2007-05-15
This is an excellent book for anyone who is just starting to walk or for someone who walks on a daily basis. I highly recommend it.
Dennis.......2004-10-16
Though not a race walker, I'm well beyond fittness walking, walking faster than many others run. It's hard to find a book that takes you beyond fittness walking, but this one does. It has plenty of material for the beginning or average fittness walker, but also has lots of exercises for those who are ready to take thier practice to the upper levels.
I also love the fact that there are also plenty of exercises for those who would like to combine thier spiritual practices with thier fittness routine. This is very practical those of us who have many demands on our lives & little time to go around.
Motivational.......2003-12-29
I enjoyed this books suggestions on using mantras to encourage yourself to go that extra distance. It is written with the beginner and beyond in mind to motivate you to bring more "sacredness" in to a simple act that we often take for granted. It isn't packed with alot of technical information about aerobic walking but does suggest reliable resources for the absolute beginner. It also includes the author and other's stories of "flagging motivation" and how they were able to overcome it by bringing more mindfulness to the situation. This is key not only in walking but in life in general (try the mantra exercise the next time you need motivation to get that laundry folded or wash those dishes!) If you're looking for something to motivate you to put more "pep in your step" this is one great book to do it.
Doing it!.......2001-07-10
I've found this book remarkably helpful. As one who has not exercised for some time due to health problems, I am just getting back into exercise by walking. I'm finding this book helpful with ideas of how to walk to keep things interesting and moving forward physically and mentally. It also keeps me inspired. I read a little every couple days just to keep my interest and inspiration levels up. I've found it very helpful and would recommend it to anyone, whether a beginner at exercise or one who has been walking physically but would like more "spirit" in it.
Full of inspirational gems and practical advice.......2001-06-13
This book is terrific for a beginner or experienced walker. She will get you out your door and moving! It's very easy to read, and conducive to looking at a chapter or two at a time. She writes especially well about working through mental blocks, and assures the reader that *every* walker has a moment in *every* work-out when s/he wants to give up. She also gives sound advice about stretching and walking form with some simple illustrations. She encourages readers to connect to their own spirituality without espousing a particular religion or belief system. I no longer wear headphones regularly when I walk because of this book: she's helped me turn my walks into truly active meditation, refreshing me mentally with every step. I tried one of her ideas of silently repeating a phrase while I walk ("I am fit, and I am strong") -- and it powered me through hundreds of training miles and my first marathon! Share this book with friends who think they're not athletes, and watch her inspire them to change their self-perception. Great advice for a 15-minute or 15-mile walk, and highly recommended by this Team in Training marathon alumna and Avon 3-Day Walk veteran.

A Treasure.......2007-04-10
I decided on Brian Browne Walker's version of the I Ching because I have gotten so much out of his translation of the Tao Te Ching. And I have not been dissapointed. Far from it, right now I am ordering a copy for my brother.
His interpretations are so clear, easy to read and insightful, one could easily read it strictly as a spirtiual/ philosophical document without even using it as it was intended.
For years I was a bit awed and intimidated by the I Ching as something very arcane and difficult to use. I couldn't have been further from the truth. Its SO simple and SO profound and often SO spot on. (Several times when deep down I knew I was putting forth a silly inquiry, number 4--"Youthful Folly" often came up. You can appreciate the joke if you know the Hex I am talking about).
This is an amazing book translated by a wise man. Get it!
I've looked for more elsewhere, but it is all here!.......2005-11-28
This was my first I Ching book. I bought it having no idea what it was. I was bored, yet longing at the same time. So, I figured I would purchase an Eastern Philosophy book.
I grew to love the readings and found them to apply very closely to my days at large. I would carry the book with me all day and read my daily 'reading'. I was amazed at how easy it was to read and how well it related to life.
After a while I decided I wanted to expand my knowledge of the I Ching. I bought a number of other books. They were more literal interpretations. I found them all to be lacking spirit, though. And, I returned to Walker's book.
Even for the skeptical and practical, the sixty-four readings flow like prose and offer a spring-board for healthy self-examination and awareness. Thank you, Brian!
A great interpretation of a classic book.......2005-10-16
For anyone just beginning their studies in the I-Ching, or those who are more experienced and rely on this oracle regulary, this book is wonderful.
Brian Browne Walker's interpretation of this amazing resource falls perfectly between being too difficult for the average user to understand, and being so "dumbed down" that someone experienced with the I-Ching would find it useless. It provides just as much information is neccesary, in a clear and consistent manner. It begins with a brief section explaining the history and importance of this resource, then gives clear instructions for it's use, followed by a hexagram chart and hexagram descriptions, and another hexagram chart is included on the last page for easy reference. I highly recommend this resource to anyone who wants to begin their studies in the I-Ching, or anyone who wants a reliable copy to rely on for regular use.
Guidance for Daily Life.......2004-09-14
For over a year I've been practicing the spirtual beliefs of the I Ching through this book, and I've yet to find a better translation of it's teachings. Frustrating as the teachings are (in that they are so simple, plain, and seemingly obvious), once you begin to cultivate the teachings, you cultivate the superiors in yourself, and as long as you follow the path of the Sage, you will see the change in yourself, and thusly, the change in your environment and those around you.
A Saramental Tool.......2004-05-16
I purchased this book several months ago based on the Customer Reviews. It has had a profound effect on my life. Its answers are consistently amazing, deep, nuanced response to my situation. Thanks to the reviewers who took the time to respond--but a special thanks to Brian Browne Walker.

Knowing God Intimately: Being close to him as you want to be!.......2006-10-18
This is the second book I've read written by Joyce Meyers. As a believer -Christian, I was inspired and learn to become closer to God intimately. Joyce Meyers (author) has a gift to bring to her audience and readers, real life issues to surface spiritally for every day people, living every day type of lives, especially those who are believers(Christians). However, I found this book upon reading taking me at a pace alot faster than I would like to have travelled upon reading. This book offers no fluff or contentious reading in the sense of making one feel guilty for not being as close to God as one should be. The book simply teaches you how to be closer to the true living God, if you are a believer or on the thrust of becoming a believer or a luke-warm Christian. Joyce Meyers laids it out in grass-roots terms with scriptures noted as such to back her writings. An excellent book for believers, or luke warm Christians, or those who are on the border line and not sure how to be or get close to the TRUE living God intimately. I suggest the purchase of this book, I'm certain your life will not be the same. God Bless!
MISHANDLING GOD'S WORD........2005-11-18
MISHANDLING GOD'S WORD.
Reckless drivel.
Inaccurate Biblical interpretation is deadly, ETERNALLY.

Every little bit helps.......2005-11-17
I've read several of Joyce's books, and I find them as a rule inspired, candid, and insightful. I'm reading a short one now on rejection that has some very powerful messages. All this to say that while this particular review is going to be a little rough I have enjoyed and been edified by everything else I've read by her. She is scriptural and positive without overdoing it, at least in her books, on what some call "Name it, claim it, frame it"- or Word of Faith.
This particular book seems mislabeled- it would probably be more aptly titled something relating to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. A very large part of the book encourages people to seek God for this gift as the way to intimacy and power with God. Since most of her readers are probably already charismatic/pentecostal they've already taken this foundational step and much of the book is not a direct benefit to them. For a new believer or someone not baptized in the Spirit I'd recommend it, otherwise there are plenty of other books out there, some by Joyce herself, that are probably going to be more beneficial to the reader trying to get from
point A to point B.
help developing a heart toward God.......2005-08-04
Personally, I didn't get into the details she discusses, but it was a great help motivating me to spend more time with the Lord.
Another great book by Joyce Meyer!.......2004-10-02
Joyce Meyer is, in my view, the most inspired and relevant Christian author alive today. I have read four of her books so far, and I consider each very rewarding, and potentially life-changing. This book, like Joyce's other books, accomplishes exactly what the title suggests. If you want to truly know how to walk closely with God, and live a rich Christian life, read this or any one of Joyce's books. I have also enjoyed "How to Hear from God", "Seven Things That Steal Your Joy" and "In Pursuit of Patience", all of which are available on Amazon. Joyce, if you are reading this, may God bless you, for you have been a blessing from God for me.

Book Description
A comprehensive overview of the Western perennial tradition--the hermetic tradition and the ancient earth wisdom of shamanic indigenous peoples
• Provides practical exercises to reawaken mystical awareness and reconnect with the ancient mystery traditions of our ancestors
• Reveals how earth wisdom and high magic complement one another
In
Walkers Between the Worlds, the authors reveal the development of both these traditions that were never far beneath the surface of Western culture and how they complement each other.
As the orthodox structures of the West appear increasingly hollow and irrelevant, the Western way trod by the shaman and the magus remains vital, with many practical methods for reawakening awareness and reconnecting with the earth. In addition to its in-depth theoretical analysis, Walkers Between the Worlds contains practical exercises drawn from traditional teaching methods used by both native and hermetic traditions to help the reader explore these mysteries.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but not light reading.......2007-07-17
This is one of the most comprehensive & thorough books I've ever read in the realm of alternative spirituality. It gives an excellent overview of all the main topics in both native/Pagan/earth-centered practice and alchemical/Hermetic/celestial practice. However, it took me almost 2 years to get through the whole book, as it is written very intelligently and requires much reflection to truly digest. Definitely not a Llewellyn-fluff book (although those have their place)! You will need to invest serious thought and time to fully understand & incorporate this book's concepts into your life. For this reason I wouldn't recommend it as one of your first alternative spirituality books; come back to it when you have studied awhile first. It will help answer your questions & fill in the gaps of earlier teachings. My favorite part are the Practices, which are like guided meditations that help bring the sometimes dry text to vibrant life.
A Vast Scholarly Study Spanning Time and Place.......2007-05-12
It's impossible for me to know where to start with a book this dense. Even with all my years studying shamanism, Witchcraft, magic, and world religions, this book had lots of information that either elobrated on things only touched upon in other sources or explained things no other text ever tried to do. I knew I'd love the shaman section, but the magi section is where I learned a lot about paradigms I don't always agree with, but ought to know to be well rounded. As someone with no Christian background, I found the sections of early Christianity's involvement with mysticism fascinating. It helps if you have already read dozens of books on the history and practice of shamanism and magic so that the sheer volume of information doesn't overwhelm you. This is the rare book I can actually say advanced workers of magic in the Western Tradition can enjoy.
Beautiful Introduction to Western Mystery Traditions. . . .......2006-09-02
I really enjoyed this book and agree with many of the other reviews- it was a well-written look into the Western Mysteries, and divides its time equally between the shaman path and the magus. What I really liked was that the author's emphasized that shamanistic traditions are not inferior to the "high magic" branches of western tradition: this distinction is key in actually fully understanding the traditions. Overall and in-depth and enjoyable read with some useful exercises as well!
Revised,updated, rewritten "The Western Way",omnibus edition.......2005-06-21
For those who have been searching for years for a copy of Caitlin and John Matthews' "The Western Way", omnibus edition, which was the compilation of the two prior western tradition magical works "The Native Tradition" and "The Hermetic Tradition", here is their definitive work revised, rewritten, and updated. The Matthews stand as two of the premier writers and practitioners of Western Tradition magic and native "shamanic" modalities, within a Celtic framework. Along with serious Western Tradition practitioners and writers such as Gareth Knight, who wrote the forward for their original works, and R. J. Stewart, who collaborated with John Matthews on quite a number of books, the Matthews have written an intriguing manual for practitioners, leading you on a journey to the Otherworlds, and leading you back safely.
As a shamanic practitioner trained in the Harner method, as well as a Druid with the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids, I can assure you that the practical principles Caitlin and John Matthews instruct in this tome are well worth the time, energy, and effort of those serious about magical and shamanic work. "A rose of the West should not seek to bloom like a lotus of the East", as the pioneers of formalizing Western Tradition have said, referring of course to Dion Fortune, Christine Hartley, William Gray, Gareth Knight, Israel Regardie, and others. This is not to disparage Eastern mysticism at all, only indicates that Eastern mysticism and practice is geared for the Eastern mind. Many people of Western cultures study Eastern practices, unaware that within their own Western cultural heritage there exists a lineage of spiritual and mystical traditions that are every bit as effective and enduring as the Eastern traditions.
Drawing from the myths, stories, poetry, ancient writings, and resources, the Matthews provide ample background to substantiate a legacy of Western magical and native traditions left to us by the giants who have gone before us. The Eastern mind and psyche is more attuned to the stillness, the still center, and simply being, while the Western mind and psyche is better engaged in activities and interactions with beings who habitate the many Otherworlds, as well as with our own Higher Self, and with our guardians and guides. These interactions can range from various divination methods, intuition, automatic writing communications, augury, scrying, inspiration, or actual verbal, aural, or thought-exchange interactions with beings. One can access otherworlds and walk therein, at will, with one foot in each world, hence the title of the book.
Considering there are organizations of medical doctors and other health care professionals who are now actively studying and practicing shamanism and shamanic techniques, in the USA and elsewhere, what was once a small and eclectic group of indigenous practitioners around the world has blossomed into thousands of people from all walks of life, called to this type of work and exploration, for whatever reasons. This book by the Matthews, whether one is drawn to Celtic shamanism, traditions, or magic, or not, can only help to enrich one's understanding and experience of shamanism and magic.
The practical exercises that were the hallmark of the earlier books remain, with enriching and updating as needed, but the structure of the prior works remains intact. I kept my omnibus edition of "The Western Way" even though most of it is incorporated within "Walkers Between the Worlds", for sentimental reasons, because it was the first book I ever read that was such a "synchonious" experience for me, one of the "Ah-ha" moments of my life, that I cannot let it go. It served me well when I was called to assist my late mother in crossing over to the Summerlands, and I took her on a journey to the Underworld so that she wouldn't be afraid of passing over, and she found it beautiful. That was prior to the "Walkers Between The Worlds" edition. All the important material and exercises from "The Western Way" were kept in the Walkers Between The Worlds" book.
Gregg Braden, author and speaker, has said that Mayan and other indigenous teachings refer to this time in the world as the time of the "Walkers Between the Worlds", and this has some significance to the year 2012, perhaps as a time of increasing and accelerating Earth vibrations.
A Western path of the heart.......2005-04-30
I first read this many years ago under its previous title THE WESTERN WAY. This wonderful book, written by two who have travelled the path deeply, gave voice and clarity to my own vague spiritual yearning, and helped me begin a rich and rewarding journey of my own. I, and many in the West, have looked eastward to find a spirituality perceived lacking in the West. Yet, a beautiful, rich and coherent spirituality does indeed exist in Western culture. This book brought me home again, and stirred the analeptic memory of my soul.
Poetic, scholarly and practical, this book offers many rich and engaging practica for exploration, none of which are terribly difficult. However, approach them with respect; do not underestimate the power of these exercises to open the inner mind and heart.
