i agree with the fact that it is a story that reads like an encyclopedia...my boys really like it and it's not so dry that i enjoy reading it again and again to them! beautiful pictures too! just right for my 6 & 4 year olds even when they were 4 & 2!

Nicola writes in such a spare and poetic style that she must capture the imagination of each child who reads it, or has it read to her. She offers facts about this bat breed as she weaves her story, and topped with delicate artwork, it's just perfect.

The beautifully written story manages to combine a ton of information about bats with a cute little story, and the illustrations are the best! My little GIRLS love this story and make me read it over and over. It reads like a story but offers information like an encyclopedia.

Interesting presentation of accurate information........1999-10-01
Bats:Creatures of the Night, is an excellent book which presents very accurate information in an entertaining manner. It also adds some good words, such as "creature", to your child's reading vocabulary.
The book points out that bats are not to be feared as they are not dangerous as described by myth; however, the book fails to warn children that bats do carry disease and downed bats should never be picked up. Although some downed bats are fallen young, others may be sick with Rabies.
Teachers/Parents: The danger myths about bats is a good introduction to the topic of myths in general.

When Indian workers begin to disappear from an expedition into the Amazon, fifteen-year-old Jake fears that his father, a bat biologist, is in great danger. Against his dad's wishes, Jake flies to Brazil and joins his father's research team, working high in the canopy of a remote stretch of the rain forest. Jake's first climb up the rope bridges and suspended walkways of the forest leads him to discover the mutilated bodies of the missing Indians-and triggers a terrifying attack by a winged beast. Jake realizes that it is up to him to find some way of stopping the nightmarish creature before it returns to slaughter the rest of the expedition.

Predictable Horror Story.......2007-06-10
Jake's father has never wanted to bring him along on any of his scientific expeditions. He thinks Jake is too immature and silly to be of any help in these adventures. Jake is now in high school and desperate for his father's approval. He is unhappy that his father hasn't noticed that he has changed and is a more grown-up person now.
Now Jake's father is off in the Amazon gathering specimens of bats. Jake has read a great deal about bats and even did a science fair project on a device that would allow him to use echolocation like bats do. During his school vacation Jake travels to his father's work site to try again to help and to convince his father to come home.
Things are no different between Jake and his father when Jake first arrives. His father expects him to be the same kid he has always been, and is not interested in having him there, despite Jake's insistence that he can help. But then something starts stalking and killing the men in the camp, and it seems as though Jake's science fair project may come in useful after all.
I liked the scientific information about bats in this story, and I liked the relationship between Jake and his father; it seemed like a typical father-son relationship. The rest of the story, though, was pretty predictable, and the ending showdown wasn't very believable.
Average, Okay Book.......2004-06-30
Plot: 15-year-old Jake Lefkovitz travels to the Amazon, where his father (a bat biologist) and his research team are on an expedition. Two of Dr. Lefkovitz's workers are missing. As it turns out, the two workers were mutilated by a giant bat. Jake, Dr. Lefkovitz, and the workers must find a way to stop the bat.
This was an okay book, but it wasn't the best I've ever read. First off, there's a small subplot about Jake and his father not being very aquainted, and Jake trying to earn his father's trust. I think Paul Zindel just used that for padding. Second, with all due respect, Zindel doesn't put much detail into the book, especially when describing the traps the characters create to capture the bat.
Also, this book is heavy, though not extreme, on blood and gore. There is a total of six deaths in this book, and only one is not causes directly by the bat (i.e., a man falls down a waterfall). All the other deaths are very violent. The descriptions of the two mutilated workers is enough to make someone quesy. Also in the book: the bat bites a man around the neck, and later does the same thing, tearing the head off; the bat sinks its fangs into a man's eyes and sucks his brains out; and the bat guts (rips open) a man and tears his upper body apart. So I think anyone who's good with Friday the 13th and some of the later Halloween films shouldn't be too grossed out by this book. I'd say if this book were to be made into a movie, it would most likely be R just for the graphic bat attacks.
Ok but nothing special.......2004-06-23
It was an ok book but there were definite flaws in it. First off he does a bad job of describing some of the traps used in defeating the bat- that could just be me. Once the boy was left to face the bat alone it was pretty unrealistic that he could kill it when they couldn't when the whole group was there. Zindel is capable of much better but it is still worth the time.

Zindel's newest and last book depicts a boy and his father fighting a giant bat. 15-year old Jake, flies to the Amazon where his father is having a expedition. His father is a zoologist, a person who studies bats. 2 men have gone missing. Jake and Hanuma go to see where the men are and find out they have been devoured by bats. On the way back Hanuma is killed by a giant bat. {Hanuma screamed as his chest was torn open and his blood spilled onto the pathway}. Next is the cook, who meets a gruesome fate. Finally, after Rasdyr is killed Jake and his father set out to kill the bat.
Night of the Bat.......2002-11-19
I really liked the book because it was gorey, scary, and etcitiny at the same time. It told lot's of good detail that helpp to get a clear picture. It was clear were I could under stand it all.
The best part of the book I thought was when the giant bat came down from the sky and grabed one of the workers. The giant bat ripped the workers neck open blood went all over. The canupe spelit off in to the river.
The auther had a good plot. Like when the auther gave all the details Like when the giant bat kiiled the guy and the crabs were eating him. He also did good on the setting on how they were in the jungle. It was hot and moist.

An excellent book! Pictures are all exquisite - very close-up so you can really see what different bats look like. In addition to the terrific pictures, the text is also superb. The writing style and level of detail makes it perfect for someone like me who does not have a science background per se but is really interested in learning more about bat behavior, their anatomy and their needs. Bats from around the world are included here. Topics such as migration, feeding habits, flight, echolocation and hibernation are covered. This is more than just an overview of bats in general though, there are examples specific to bats that we might see. For example in the section on what bats eat, there's info on the Little Brown Bat and the fact that it tends to eat small aquatic insects versus Big Brown Bats tending to eat June beetles, etc

Did you know that studying bats can teach also teach us about humans? Those with poor sight are often labeled "blind as a bat" but the simple fact is that these small animals do have eyes and several species (like the flying foxes) see well, thank you very much. So what do they do when their echolocation "sees" one thing and their eyes tell them something different? What role does color play?
This book is filled with neat information, scientific questions, and gorgeous color photographs that kids will love. The book is divided into seven chapters on everything from the basic lure of bats, their auditory "vision" and what they eat to where they live, how they look and how to conserve them.
The rich photographs show all kinds of fruit, insect-eating and vampire bats, feeding and in their roosts all over the world.
The book closes with four brief sections on bat classifications, anatomy, scientific and common names, and other books and technical publications about bats.
The type is fairly large, and the text is both scientific easy enough for independent readers aged 10 and up.

Fred did a great job describing our life that year. I can attest to the B-52 foul ups with TFA etc and know of the nav who inadvertently bailed out.I was eager to learn of the "Bat" training methods since ours were very informal.We did have a tactics book, but we were lucky to have very senior aircrew. This book takes you to the cockpit of a C-130A flying Blind Bat flare missions. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Blind Bat, but this book proved me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If I had to make any complaint I wish it was much longer.
