Congratulations, you're expecting a baby! What you may not be expecting is all of the requisite gear you "need" to look after your dear bundle. Fear not. Denise and Alan Fields, authors of Bridal Bargains, are here to tell you what's super and what's silly, and how to find it at the best price. You'll learn all about how (and where) to shop for a crib and dresser (including how to get European styling at reasonable prices), what you need in bedding and what can be skipped (a hint: no baby requires the $200 quilt!), which clothing brands are safest and least expensive, and how to shop for monitors, toys, car seats, strollers, books, videos, and more. The authors have field-tested every major brand (and several of the minor ones), and they provide star ratings and annotations at the end of every chapter. A helpful feature in each chapter called "Wastes of Money" will steer you away from $35 Baby Air Jordans and frilly diaper stackers that match your bedding. If that's not enough, they offer a money-back guarantee: If the book doesn't save you at least $250 in baby expenses, they'll refund the price of the book. Well researched and written in a witty and comfortable tone, Baby Bargains should be required reading for every safety- and money-conscious parent-to-be. --Rebecca A. Staffel

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-10-18

i'm a ratings-junkie (consumer reports, tripadvisor, etc) so this book was just up my alley. great for a first time mom and especially helpful when trying to register for my baby shower. i'm passing it along to friends who are also first-time moms.

5 out of 5 stars I wish they had a book like this for everything in life.......2007-10-17

Wonderful book. I am pregnant for the first time and this book was reccomended by friends. BEST thing I have bought! It helps you understand what to buy and what not to buy. It covers each thing (including childcare) in detail so that you know what it is, what type of thing, and where to buy. It gives reviews in several formats. Narrative form, ABCD ratings, graphs and so on. Somethig for each type of learner. Includs great detain about the bands, stores and internet shopping.

5 out of 5 stars My Baby Product Bible.......2007-10-15

I love this book. Even after having it for 5 months, I still find myself referring back to it for different products. It is extremely thorough and comprehensive with it's reviews on all brands of products. This isn't the type of book that will tell you to buy the cheapest thing. It is a hybrid recommendation between product safety ratings, quality and price -- pretty much what middle class america is looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Guide for Parents-to-Be.......2007-10-13

I HIGHLY recommend that parents-to-be read this book. I read it from cover to cover during my pregnancy and was very impressed with how in-depth the authors are in providing information not only on finding the best deals, but getting the best value for your money, avoiding companies whose products have had safety issues, and identifying non-essential items. It was an essential guide for us in building our baby registry. The book is well-written, clearly lays out the information, and is not dry or boring to read.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book for first time parents!.......2007-10-13

This book is the best out there to help you figure out what you need for your new babe. It helps you figure out what you should splurge on and what you can hold off on. Love this book!I always recommend it to new parents to help them figure out all the products out there!

I am a pastor and father of four daughters. Meekers' work delivers blow after blow of important instructions.

1 out of 5 stars Fathers & Daughters.......2007-09-30

This is an excellent book written by a medical doctor, who shows the supreme importance of a Dad in the life of a daughter. He is vital to her development as a girl and a woman. It took me back to my own relationship with my daughter, who now has her Ph.D. and is a psychologist. After I read the book, and I found myself hungry for each chapter, I am sending the book to my son, who has a young daughter himself.

5 out of 5 stars Very inisightful book.......2007-09-26

This book has been wonderful. I only wish i had read it years ago when all three of my daughters were young (2 r college age now). I now see how many of my defects/wrong assumptions in parenting set the stage for a lot of the heart ache that we went through with my older two daughters. It now makes sense to me and i know how to address the problem going forward. I can not recommmend this book highly enough for every father who wants his daughter to thrive and not struggle to survive. It opened my eyes to how different my daughter's world is from what i knew as a kid. And to how if i do not father her, there is a culture that is desperately trying to teach her that what is important is looking like Paris Hilton, partying, being promiscuous, etc .... The issue is whether i surrender her to that or protect and nurture her. Thanks to Dr. Meeker.

Book Description

“TRACY HOGG HAS GIVEN PARENTS A GREAT GIFT–the ability to develop early insight into their child’s temperament.”
–Los Angeles Family

When Tracy Hogg’s Secrets of the Baby Whisperer was first published, it soared onto bestseller lists across the country. Parents everywhere became “whisperers” to their newborns, amazed that they could actually communicate with their baby within weeks of their child’s birth. Tracy gave parents what for some amounted to a miracle: the ability to understand their baby’s every coo and cry so that they could tell immediately if the baby was hungry, tired, in real distress, or just in need of a little TLC. Tracy also dispelled the insidious myth that parents must go sleepless for the first year of a baby’s life–because a happy baby sleeps through the night. Now you too can benefit from Tracy’s more than twenty years’ experience. In this groundbreaking book, she shares simple, accessible programs in which you will learn:

• E.A.S.Y.–how to get baby to eat, play, and sleep on a schedule that will make every member of the household’s life easier and happier.
• S.L.O.W.–how to interpret what your baby is trying to tell you (so you don’t try to feed him when he really wants a nap).
• How to identify which type of baby yours is–Angel, Textbook, Touchy, Spirited, or Grumpy–and then learn the best way to interact with that type.
• Tracy’s Three Day Magic–how to change any and all bad habits (yours and the baby’s) in just three days.

At the heart of Tracy’s simple but profound message: treat the baby as you would like to be treated yourself. Reassuring, down-to-earth, and often flying in the face of conventional wisdom, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer promises parents not only a healthier, happier baby but a more relaxed and happy household as well.

5 out of 5 stars Saved my quality of life.......2007-10-11

This book is a life saver for new moms or moms struggling with babies sleep patterns. I thought I was loosing it until my father gave me this book. A short easy to implement program to train your baby to sleep regularly.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible! Not based on any science.......2007-10-02

I bought this book when my baby was four months old. I tried every technique in there (early waking, cluster feedings) and nothing helped. I ended up baby "Happy Child, Healthy Sleep Habits" and he basically debunked all her theories with science and baby sleep studies. I tried his theories and now I have a great baby who developed into a toddler that sleeps so well! This book is seriously a waste of time, I need to sell mine or give it away. This woman has no real or scientific experience with babies, I would love for to come to my house and use it on my child, because I will promise you that her stuff doesn't work. Plus, at nine months, giving cluster feedings won't help, babies wake up at that age because of habit or neurology, not because they're hungry. It was just such a waste of money!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Baby Book Ever.......2007-09-27

I was given this book as a gift and have since purchased it for everyone I know who is having a baby. Great Book!!

5 out of 5 stars best book.......2007-09-20

i buy this book for all my friends who are having babies. this book is just incredible. i followed it and my daughter slept through the night at six weeks. i couldn't have been more pleased. too bad i didn't have it when my son was born....
WORTH EVERY CENT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars i agreed with everything in this book! a must for first time moms and dads........2007-09-18

i picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend, and i was not disappointed. the author is a baby nurse and has a "special" way with newborns and infants, and is passing along her wisdom and experiences in this book. i found myself agreeing with everything she had to say, and have implemented her "e-a-s-y" way of caring for infants with my new baby. i also agree with the s-l-o-w technique to determine what your baby might need (why are they crying?), to avoid stuffing a pacifier in their mouth at the first sign of fussiness. one thing to note, my baby is a "textbook" baby, and it was fairly simple for us to implement these techniques. for people with colicy or super fussy babies, using this book may be more difficult and take longer to implement. ultimately, i totally agree with giving a baby a routine (not an inflexible schedule), and for treating babies like the people they are, and respecting them and their personal space. i highly recommend this book!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The last thing new parents can find time for is quiet reading, so many helpful books on infant care rely on bullet points and a "let's get to the point" writing style. Tracy Hogg, a neonatal nurse, teacher, and mother of two, uses these techniques to good effect in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Focusing on newborns and their parents, her simple programs are a blend of intelligent intuition and methods based on years of experience. The first half of the book is devoted to E.A.S.Y--her name for creating a structured daily routine for you and your baby that makes the most of your baby's awake times and also leaves time just for you. These concepts aren't designed to force your bundle of joy into not following her body's needs, but rather to create a feasible middle ground between total rigidity and on-demand food and sleep (and no time for mom to shower). If it still strikes you as too regimented, keep reading. The author makes room for differences in personal style and includes short quizzes to determine whether you're a "planner" or a "winger", and what level of daily structure you are likely to find helpful. In the same chapter, she identifies five general temperaments of infants, how to get an accurate feel for yours, and what methods of care are likely to be the most effective for his temperament. Her statement that babies prefer routine is backed up by research from the University of Denver. While most of the book relies on anecdotes to get the points across, Hogg does find room to back up some of her statements with quotes from various researchers and institutions. Included at the end of the book are assurances that E.A.S.Y. can be followed even with a colicky baby or one who's been ruling the roost for the first few months. Frustrated parents might like to read the last page first: "all the baby-whispering advice in the world is useless unless you're having a good time being a parent" is an excellent reminder to enjoy this time with all of its ups and downs. --Jill Lightner

3 out of 5 stars Some good information.......2007-08-29

I did get some vital information on putting my kiddo to sleep. But her advice drove me insane when I tried to apply it to a new born! He was just too young at 1 week to perform under her requirements and I felt like a terrible mother with an abnormal kiddo. Now that he is older (2 1/2) months much of what she writes about independence and getting your kiddo to sleep is helpful. When my son was 1-4 weeks his schedule was *his* schedule and I really just had to be there for him. I still co-sleep even though Hogg advises against it and I still like to put my kiddo to sleep in my arms. He sleeps in noisy rooms and quiet ones. The list goes on. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING A WELL READ NEW PARENT CAN TAKE FROM THIS REVIEW IS THIS: read all you can even Hogg's book but always keep your instincts when it comes to raising your baby, no author is you and no one person can know your baby on a personal and visceral level the way you do. On the breastfeeding....I think her tips on the actual act of breast feeding are wonderful as for the politics I could not disagree with her more. This is a very politically and emotionally charged issue no matter your position. As for her being responsible for whether or not a woman chooses to breast feed by the opinions expressed by Hogg in this book: I do not agree. If it takes so little for a mother to quit breast feeding then maybe she just was not cut out for it. I *knew* breast feeding was the best for my kid so I do it...period. Some women just cannot or will not go the extra mile no matter what they read.

5 out of 5 stars Try and read this before the baby arrives.......2007-08-28

This book has been great for us and I believe this is largely because we read it before the baby was born and started implementing Hogg's techniques immediately. Having read both Sears/AP and Ezzo parenting books as well, we have found Hogg's methods to be a great middle ground. The EASY method is working great for us. I love her chapter on Awake activities and appropriate playing at different ages and stages. She breaks down bathing and massage techniques, as well. Her advice on using a pacifier makes so much sense. And, of course, the easy to follow charts that allow you interpret and respond to your baby's cries and movements are excellent.

Best of all though is the confidence we have in putting our baby down to sleep - because we started this from day one we were able to implement Hogg's techniques that allow us to put the baby in her crib while sleepy but still awake and watch her gently drift off to sleep on her own. Our baby has been learning how to self sooth since day one and it's amazing to watch her.

5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-08-18

This book was recommeded by my OBGYN. I read a few other books but found Tracy's information and advice useful and accurate. I found her writing style to be enjoyable--like reading a good novel, therefore, I retained the information; rather than trying to recall what you should do in a particular situation.

5 out of 5 stars What a great resource.......2007-08-10

I have a 3 month old baby boy and I would highly recommed this book. In fact, I wish I had read this book earlier because it would have saved me a lot of stress. Tracey's insight is really helpful and I feel that I've connected with my baby much better since reading this book. She also provides a lot of support to women who choose not to breastfeed. I was feeling guilty for not breastfeeding especially since my son had formula issues but Tracey help to put things into perspective about it being a very personal choice and there being nothing wrong with choosing formula feeding.

5 out of 5 stars The best money you will ever spend!.......2007-08-10

This book changed my life.. for the first 8 weeks of my new baby I thought I was going to crack up. I had read that babies shoudl sleep a lot and therefore it confused me that my little one did not. It was not because she didn't like sleeping, it was because I was not reading her cues and not knowing what to expect. This book explains it all very easily and actually it is all down to common sense.. i.e reading your baby and knowing what is wrong. As soon as i read the book i could see where i was going wrong and as soon as i put my little pone on the recomended routine, my life changed forever.. she slept for long periods during the day, all night long and basically became a dream child. It is all about common sense and once you get over the initial hurdle of trying to find time to read the book, your life will be chnaged forever!

For sophomores John and Lorraine, the world feels meaningless; nothing is important. They certainly can never please their parents, and school is a chore. To pass the time, they play pranks on unsuspecting people. It's during one of these pranks that they meet the "Pigman"--a fat, balding old man with a zany smile plastered on his face. In spite of themselves, John and Lorraine soon find that they're caught up in Mr. Pignati's zest for life. In fact, they become so involved that they begin to destroy the only corner of the world that's ever mattered to them. Originally published in 1968, this novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Zindel still sings with sharp emotion as John and Lorraine come to realize that "Our life would be what we made of it--nothing more, nothing less."

Book Description

A Most Unusual Friendship

When sophomores John and Lorraine played a practical joke a few months ago on a stranger named Angelo Pignati, they had no idea what they were starting. Virtually overnight, almost against their will, the two befriended the lonely old man; it wasn't long before they were more comfortable in his house than their own. But now Mr. Pignati is dead. And for John and Lorraine, the only way to find peace is to write down their friend's story -- the story of the Pigman.

4 out of 5 stars Jeremy's rating.......2007-10-06

I really enjoyed this book. It was very fun to read, and unique. I liked how Paul Zindel told the story from the two kids sides. It kept me guessing the whole time. It was set in a town, where many high school kids lived and hung out. Most of the time, the kids enjoyed setting bombs in the bathroom, disrupting class, and prank phone calls. But their rank calls were put to an end when they called Mr.Pignati. or the Pigman. Two sophmores, John and Lorraine, called him as a fake charity, looking for donations. They went there, and the three soon became friends. The Pigman was very lonely. His wife "went on vacation to California," as he said. He collects glass pigs, and spends time at the zoo with the monkeys. Then, one day, while John and Lorraine were roller-skating with the Pigman, he had a heart attack.
Mr.Pignati was fine, but he had to spend a few days in the hospital. So, Lorraine and John try to throw a party for Mr.Pignati's return. But things get way out of hand. The girls mess up the Pigman's wife's clothes (who turns out to be deceased). The guys make the place into a dump, and break his pigs. The Pigman returns, and falls into a deep depression.
John and Lorraine want to make the Pigman feel better. So, they take him to the zoo. They go straight to the monkey house, and Mr. Pignati starts calling for Bobo, his favorite monkey friend at the zoo. A man tells them that Bobo died, and Mr. Pignati gets even sadder. As John and Lorraine turn to leave, Mr. Pignati collapses, and dies.
The book was very sad, i thought, but it was a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Realistic.......2007-09-03

Two bored and lonely high school sophomores from dysfunctional, apathetic families are searching for acceptance, attention, and contentment. They find that for which they yearn in each other and in Angelo Pignati, a lonely, unusual, gentle man who collects ceramic pigs. Upon encountering the pigman, as they referred to him, by randomly calling people in the phone book, John and Lorraine are bewildered by his kindheartedness, candidness and attentiveness to them. The three atypical friends share simple pleasures, including visits to the zoo to feed Bobo, the vicious baboon that the pigman had previously been visiting and feeding on a daily basis. Sadly, in an effort to maintain the approval of their peers, John and Lorraine violate the pigman's trust. The pigman does forgive them, but the disappointment he feels lingers until it is exacerbated by the additional devastation of Bobo's death.

Although long-winded and slow-moving at times, Zindel adds realism to his characterizations by writing this story in the first person. He begins his story with a signed pact between John and Lorraine and continues the story in the first person, alternating between chapters narrated by John and others by Lorraine. The use of typical teen dialect makes the characters very appealing to young adults, although the subject may not be of much interest. Zindel effectively uses the repetition of the theme of pigs throughout his plot, a strong archetypal symbol of the selfishness that is the demise of the teens. The integral settings, from the exotic atmosphere of the zoo to the eccentric home of the pigman, fill the reader with intense images that reinforce the impact of the story. Although the style, characters, and settings are intriguing, the weak denouement lacks the impact that would make for a more memorable impression.

4 out of 5 stars The Pigman.......2007-02-28

For two adolescents, the world seemed unimportant, worthless, due to theire type of life. These two adolescents, John and Lorraine, are different; John would over-age himself and drink beer and pull pranks on people; school was useless/ meaningless on his point of view. While Lorraine would think of school like something neutral, and she is always kind (in a way). During there normal live's, they meet a man that totally changed their life7 gave it a twist, this was Mr. Pignati (A.K.A Pigman). Both of them become so involved with him, that they almost forget about their way of living before meeting him; life would never be the same for John and Lorraine after meeting "The Pigman."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book though it is now almost entering the realm of historical fiction!.......2007-01-19

This is a wonderful book to use with late middle school or early high school classes. The book is a bit dated and might need a little bit of teacher explanation about the "old days" of the 1960's but John, Lorraine and their friends are timeless and so is Mr. Pignati. I love the way Zindel alternates the chapters between John and Lorraine's voices. It supplies a great way to teach kids about point of view and characterization. And I'll never forget the story Mr. Pignati teaches John and Lorraine about the woman, her husband, her lover, a boatman and an assassin. That little fable makes for great discussions (and a personality test of sorts) that kids often take home to their families and share with friends.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-12-30

I thought the pigman is a great book to read. I like it because they talk about a lot of topics like on teens for example. I thought when John, Lorraine and the others did the telephone marathon it was cute yet mischeivious in a way. I also thought it was sort of cheesy.

The saddest part of the book was when the pigman died. He didn't deserve to. And Bobo too. I thought that was sad too. Anyway pigman is the best!

Book Description

Carmen Bryan is no stranger to the rap world. Not only did she work at Def Jam and Capitol Records but she shares a daughter with hip-hop superstar Nas -- a relationship made extremely public through Nas's celebrity status, rap lyrics, and the ever-present media. Now, in It's No Secret, a strong, resilient Carmen bares all, telling her side of the story and leaving no detail unturned -- with the true candor and raw emotion of someone who has been there, done that, and survived.

From a clandestine relationship with Nas's biggest rival, Jay-Z, that stirred up the biggest feud in hip-hop history, to seeing her reputation in tatters and a once loving relationship with Nas fall apart, Carmen depicts her trying journey to become the strong woman and mother she is today. After years of turmoil that included drugs, sex, greed, and violence -- and abandoning what she had always prized above all, her freedom -- Carmen took a stand, focusing on herself. After years of pursuit by the media, Carmen sets the record straight in It's No Secret -- and has no regrets.

4 out of 5 stars Very Surprised.......2007-10-18

I hesitated before buying this book because of the things I had heard and I could really care less what Nas and/or Jay-Z do/did. I saw Carmen on Wendy Williams' show and although I respected the way she spoke up for herself when Wendy started bashing her; for some reason I didn't like her. I thought she was a Karrine Steffans copycat.

After reading the book I completely changed my mind. I actually respect the way she presented herself in print, I didn't feel like she was trying attack anyone or make anyone look stupid like the other book I read about hollywood "escapades". I also didn't feel like she was trying sleep her way into Hollywood. I thought the book was well written and I respected the way she delt w/ the Kelis situation even though she should have left him alone the first time he started seeing other women.

As a mother of two it really broke my heart to read the way she used the many abortions as a means of birth control. I wish she would have learned the first time and took better precautions. I really didn't like Nas before reading the book and after reading the book (considering the things she said were all true), I really don't like him still. Overall I thought the book was pretty good and I was pleasantly surprised at the content.

5 out of 5 stars secret lives we live.......2007-10-17

interesting is all i can say everyone is human and even rap stars still have issues only they have issues and money i commend her for putting her buisness out there but i would not want my female child to read this about me later on in life gosh somethings are left unsaid and if you are in need of money then use your bright smarts to go about it a different way life would be so easier, and also i would never want the whole world to know that i did not respect my body enough that i put out here about so many pregnancy terminations thats the whole part that sucks about this book strap it up are just plain old keep your legs closed.

I think it was a good book. I enjoyed it, the thing was I wanted to know more about NaS and not her, the only reason why I got it was b/c of him. since i'll never marry him I wanted to know what it would be like to be with him. I'll still take him though i know that. I read it in one day. but i do wish her the best. sometimes things dont always work out

1 out of 5 stars not all that intersting.......2007-09-14

could have been better not interesting enough maybe if carmen slept around with more people this would sell more but not all that good so what nas beat her, both were guilty we all know nas was a male ho we know jay z is a male ho too we know kelis is a freak, hdell nas may have slept witrh beyonce before she started fooling with jigga what was her number doing in his pocket in hollywood and the music business everybody sleeps with everybody.

1 out of 5 stars Strong Woman? No........2007-08-25

I sure am glad I got this book at the library and didn't pay any money for it because the time I spent reading it was a waste.

Strong woman? Not even close. Drama queen? Yep.

It is pretty easy to predict she will continue to live her life with the same behavior she describes in her book. Irresponsible.

I read The Secrets of Attraction, by Sandra Anne Taylor and decided to attempt to put into practice what I had learned in theory using the wisdom of the law of magnetism, insights into universal laws and paradoxical intent.

I created some affirmations and re-directed some of my emotionally charged energy away from disappointment and toward my newly created goals, as well as creating a manifestation journal to document the results.

Well, I am pleasantly surprised.

My manifestation journal is becoming filled with new-found abundance and prosperity that I have been attracting into my life and I am well on my way to positive, progressive, life transformation.

A must read and highly recommended!

Another of my favourite recent discoveries in New Age books that highlights romance, spirituality and life transformation is...

4 out of 5 stars Secrets Worthy of Being Very Well Known.......2007-07-07

This book is terrific. Although Ms. Taylor offers many concepts that are offered in other self improvement books, her way of weaving together positive moral guidance and a system of ethics offers a fresh perspective that is very motivating, particularly in the way she ties in the concept of the universe giving us what we send it through our behavior and attitudes.

Sandra Taylor, a practicing psychologist, delves into the science of success with this well-written insight into the world of universal law and how it may be used to change your relationships, and improve the romance in your life. Laws such as the Law of Magnetism, Law of Attraction, and Law of Pure Desire have achieved a wide popularity recently, which seems to reflect our current rage for advice on how to succeed and achieve our goals. In my opinion, Taylor does a good job in this area, delivering a piece similar to the popular book "Shortcut to a Miracle," by Michael and Elizabeth Rann.

If you are interested in something more specifically geared towards financial success, you may want to try the classic "Richest Man in Babylon," by George Clason, or "The 17 Principles of Creating Wealth," by Phillip Collinsworth.

You are a creature unlike any other (Rule #1)--that's why you need . . . The Rules. A simple set of dos and don'ts, The Rules will lead you to where you want to be: in a healthy, committed relationship. Unlike today's haphazard dating customs, The Rules recognizes certain facts of life. That men know what they want. That a man is either attracted to you--or not! That men want a challenge, not an instant or easy victory. When you follow these commonsense guidelines, you treat yourself with respect and dignity--and demand that men do likewise. Although they sound old-fashioned ("Don't see him more than once or twice a week"), they encourage you to lead a full, satisfying, busy life--outside of romance. Although they seem tough ("Don't talk to a man first"), they will teach you how to accept occasional defeat and move on. And although they require discipline ("No more than casual kissing on the first date"), they will bring out the best in you and in the men you date. The goal? Marriage, in the shortest time possible, to a man you love, who loves you even more than you love him.

5 out of 5 stars Followed the rules! Now blissfully MARRIED!!!.......2007-10-10

The Rules is a great book. As a feminist, I want to say that this book works for women who are tired of doing all the work. As a wife, my husband is glad that I followed the rules because he told me that he respected me more than any woman he dated before me.

The men who comment here who are against 'games' are men that we women should avoid! Run fast because this 'man' wants to be lazy, unaccountable, boring and most importantly not thoughtful.

Us women strategize about our education, our careers, and how we take care of our bodies...and that is responsible, but somehow having some guidelines and goals for our romantic lives is considered trite by many of the reviewers. Well let them bumble in the dark. I read The Rules and I worked them and they worked for me!

The most interesting thing about this book is that Ellen Fein DIVORCED after the publication of this book (in 2001, I believe). Shouldn't this be a gigantic red flag for anyone considering buying this trash?

I mean, aside from the fact that neither of them are qualified counselors, nor do they have any sort of professional background.

Of course, I may have a personal hatred for this book, seeing as my own thrice-divorced mother decided that this was an appropriate gift for me... when I was only 12.

As a man I suggest: be careful.

"Rules" behavior is "very desirable girl" behavior systematized; it's personal branding (i.e., somehwat false) to weed out (mostly) useless players and genuinely low-status males to a lesser extent (girls want to hook the highest-possible status male with "honest," long-term intent; or alternately entrance a reliable shlub and probably cheat on him). "Rules" behavior comes naturally for high-status girls because their lives are filled with people and multiple potential suitors every day, usually for a reason: because they're hot and charming, in that order. Now by the Rules, the man is supposed to intuit and codify the woman's high social status, therefore mentally exalting her as "virgin" rather than "whore," and therefore "a serious mate," which is the only man a decent girl wants, theoretically, making the Rules seem good for women out for long-term mates.

All the times I've been in love have been no-sex situations, I'm sorry to report. This mimics Pleistocine times when two people naturally grow into an item over at least a few sexless years, and everyone occupies the same tribal ground on a daily basis; anybody's status is already basically known by everyone: what they do, how useful and hot they are, and what the cultural ideals exalt. Everybody's status is a little variable, but common knowledge and regularly discussed (indeed, probably the most interesting thing to discuss, especially for women ((hence gossip mags, which fill the need with celebrity simulacrums))).

There's the rub: in Pleistocine times, as a "Rules"-ish girl, you could jabber away with your girlfriends by the girl-fire, maddeningly flirt with other males, not talk to the man for several days, driving him crazy, wait for his approach, and this would come naturally, and you'd very organically "hook" the male, who you've probably known for years, and hey, he's developed genuine love for you, however temporary. In our times, "Rules" behavior wants to convey the image of high status, which would be more organically transmitted in previous epochs. You're trying to artificially engineer, probably over a smaller space of time, how marriage-love happens. And it can work.

But as a man in this society, I don't know you, you don't know me (everybody agrees it's really, really awkward at first), which is the exact opposite of the Pleistocine. I meet you at a bar, I have a tenuous connection to you; you bail on a phone call, I still don't know you. I'm trying to figure you out, of course, so you can exploit this mystique, but your existence is barely definite to me. Your evasion might make me interested, but if I know other sexy girls who are much more definite in my mind, why bother? You potentially exclude the most happening men, who you'd be most interested in marrying, provided they weren't chronic philanderers, and their having an active social life where you're not initially important does not necessarily make them philanderers. Telegraphing your status by the Rules doesn't mean anything if nobody's listening. Men will "listen" to your protracted and indirect conveyance of status to the extent you're uncommonly attractive and charming. If you're a little unattractive, your rouse will possibly hook a desperate shlub, only, and you'll be like the guy who only dated fat girls off of Craig's List: doomed to mediocrity by the dating conditions you observe.
It's not wrong to call this strategy fundamentally just "bluffing;" in a bluff, you imagine the smoothest operator (who you want) not falling for it.

Maybe some mystery propels me at you: but likely how propelled I am is based on how attracted I am to you, how "cool" you seem on what little I know of you, and that requires substantial, if fragmentary, prior knowledge. A very gregarious, great man might barely have an IMPRESSION of who you are, even if he goes on a couple dates with you. Instead he'll find somebody who has already MADE AN IMPRESSION, due to how our society is set-up right now. Not talking, not making dates, ending phone-calls; that's only effective to the degree you've already solidified your hotness/high social status/definiteness as a reliable personality who exists in the man's mind, and "nerd"-y imagination is the best engine to create this image. So the Rules can function like nerd-bait; probably not what you want.

There's your second rub: male pick-up artists make more sense, for men, since women take 80% of status from behavioral and cognitive cues to place them in a big social picture. Men take the majority of your status-idea from your image, how hot you are. This might be an evolutionary freak. I've known conventionally "beautiful" women whose personalities utterly kill my attraction, it's rare but it happens...OVER SEVERAL MONTHS. Men's insanely easy-to-predict superficiality may be based on the fact we don't know any of you yet, but hey, our innate superficiality is five times yours, so we get obsessed with it. Still, in the long-term, ESPECIALLY with marriage, your personality DOES matter, and I don't mean lame evasion-techniques to create temporary mystique and sexual fixation. That only works on the suckers, the losers.

All men would more or less love 100 sexually-attractive girlfriends at once, so if you're too much too fast and too easy, it's easy to imagine a man codifying you as an ideal slut (your behavior indicates in itself other females could be sexual doormats). That's something to keep in mind, but being overly evasive and non-sexual, if you're not exceptionally attractive, is more dangerous for you in our times. Obviously, if your whole package is wonderful, even if you're a little "easy," you gain hand by suggesting you'll leave him. Implementing the Rules in the first months sets up a stupid game where the question is how important you are to him, and the answer is: 1)how hot you are, 2)how willing he is to jump through hoops based on nothing but hot you are (answer: as willing as he is a worthless nerd).

Avoidance when the man barely knows you traffics in partial insanity, since your social coolness is largely irrelevant to men (he knows how hot you are, based on how hot you are, and can accurately imagine how easily you can get laid). In fact, your attachment to other men ("I'm already going out on Saturday with some friends") means virtually nothing to him, because he knows other men desire you, if you're desireable. Overall such smokescreens probably have a negligable effect; when I think of other men going out with girls I've been really into, it creates jealousy (moreso if I know the male), but if I don't know the male, it induces a desire, after a while, to let the girl go. After all I can't compete with a man I can barely imagine. On the other hand, if a man is going out on Saturday, a woman's knowledge that he has other females desiring him is probably more important by a factor of three at least.

So contemporary human sexuality is virtually FUBAR, due to the evolutionarily unprecedented need for a woman to become a real person with high status, in the man's eyes, and also not be so available. A woman who wants a long-term mate should find a balance between creating familiarity and evasiveness. I guess that's what most girls try to do naturally.

Acting like a princess could systematically alienate the really great men. The Rules are probably best for girls who want to marry dorks and cheat on them.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is right on the money.......2007-08-17

I honestly cannot fathom why there is such an outcry about this book. Can someone please explain to me why it's such a terrible thing for a woman to hold a man to high standards.

It was easy to do the rules when I was younger. Men drove to my house (I lived with my parents while I was in college) and I had a curfew. I grew up in a small town so if a man was a player or a bad person, we all knew about him. The village of women in a small town usually stick together.

If you now live in a big metropolis like I do, the men with bad intentions can easily hide in the crowds.

I'm not saying all women act with integrity but neither do all men.

Everytime I do the rules, I attract a man who adores me. Pure and simple.

Let's examine why some of these rules work.

Only returning calls. Women like to talk on the phone for hours, men don't. When you call a man you run the risk of him being in the middle of the game or busy with a hobby. When a man calls you, it's because you're on his mind and he has something to say.

Not meeting a man halfway. Trust me, if a man wants to see a game, a fight, a concert, etc...he will drive a 100 miles if he has to.

Not talking to men first. If a man is interested he will find a way to contact you. There are shy men granted, but if a man is really interested, he'll make it happen.

The man HAS to set the tone of the relationship. You want a man who is delighted to take you down the aisle of marriage, not a man you have to "force" or give an ultimatum to.

You CAN do the rules and be yourself but you have to use some sense of decorum when you first meet someone. You can't let it all hang out. Would you do that on a job interview? I think not.

The Rules help women who are too "nice". Being "nice" doesn't get you married, doing the Rules do.

I'm now single and dating again after breaking off a long term relationship that was not going to end up in marriage. I could have stayed and dated him for the next 20 years but I want marriage. He didn't, I do and we're now broke up, pure and simple. When I meet men now I don't even mention the relationship. If they ask I simply say he went one way and I went the other way and I'd rather not bore you with stories of an ex and I leave it that.

Now the Rules doesn't mean you can look like a slob. I eat right, I workout like a fiend, I have long hair and a healthy body. That's what men like period. I don't dress for women, I dress for men.

I am doing the rules again and ladies it works. It doesn't matter how old you are, they work. I'm now living life to the fullest, I go places where there are single eligible men, I'm really happy and over the bitterness of the breakup and I'm ready to meet my future sweetheart.

It's only a matter of time before he finds me and I'll be doing the Rules to the "T".

Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)

Book Description

When orphaned Mary Lennox, lonely and sad, comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At night, she hears the sound of crying down one of the long corridors. Outside, she meets Dickon, a magical boy who can charm and talk to animals. Then, one day, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary discovers the most mysterious wonder of all--a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Is everything in the graden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life?

3 out of 5 stars A classic for girls.......2007-09-22

The Secret Garden is a book about a spoiled girl who uncovers the mysteries of the house around her which include, but are not limited too, what is behind the wall, and why is it kept secret. It is a good classic, but girls will enjoy it much more than boys do.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-08-06

Even if you are an adult you should reread this book. Helps you to see how fun it was to be a kid.

5 out of 5 stars Seeds the child's imagination..........2007-07-29

This has always been one of my favorite books since childhood. When I read my first story in this book it gave me so much inspiration to use my imagination as a child should. A child's imagination is so real! This reality soon takes the form of abstract, which paves the road to anywhere he wants it to go - or not...

1 out of 5 stars The Secret Garden.......2007-07-05

This edition is printed on really cheap, unappealing paper. I can't imagine anyone wanting to give this version of a children's classic as a gift, or even to read from it to a child yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Book.......2007-07-03

This book is the best book I have ever read. It's a light, happy book that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Ilove the theme of hope in the book, that will convince readers about the Magic inside themselves...if they hope. If they believe something will happen, it will. That theme is so beautifully conveyed. I couldn't put it down, and it is most definitely my new favorite book. A MUST READ!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars says nothing about Ho'o Ponopono - it's a RIPOFF!.......2007-10-18

This book says nothing about real Ho'o Ponopono. It says you have to pay for a seminar to find out what Joe Vitale thinks it is. The come-on shows Vitale is totally ignorant of what Ho'o Ponopono is. The rest of the book is nothing but sales pitches for Joe Vitale books and the stuff his business partners are selling. a TOTAL RIPOFF!

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-10-18

I have been reading self help books for years and finding this book has been a true magical gift. I always knew it had to be SIMPLE!

5 out of 5 stars Ho'oponopono- A New Way of Living.......2007-10-17

I call this " a new way of Living", and what I mean by that is it is a way to heal myself , and all those I perceive as needing healing, which is really me!! What a concept!! At times I really get it, and other times it is a little harder. Surely "that person over there" has nothing to do with me. Even so, it is an awesome practice, and one I will continue to do.
Thanks, Joe and Dr.Len.

5 out of 5 stars ZERO LIMITS.......2007-10-17

The book was in perfect shape. It makes so much sense. We have to forgive and love. That's the only way our world can be whole again.

4 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, shocking, and an opportunity to "cleanse".......2007-10-14

At first I was dissuaded from reading Zero Limits by some of the negative reviews on Amazon, which stated that the book was simply a tout for Vitale's seminars and other products.

Still, when I found the book in a local bookstore and looked into it. I was quite surprised by what I discovered. A book with "heart," insight, and some quite fascinating information.

Some reviewers have complained that the book simply reveals the four key phrases of the modern ho'oponopono technique, and never does offer any deeper secrets of the practice. That is true, but if someone really practices those so-called "basics" of Love, Forgiveness, Apology, and Thanks till they resonate in every area of one's life---then one's Life becomes an almost miraculous succession of divinely-inspired events.

The book essentially describes Vitale's meeting and subsequent relation with Dr Ilhaleakala Hew Len, a proponent of "modern ho'opononono," which was devised by Morrnah Simeona from the ancient Hawaiian practice. Dr Len became an internet legend when the story of how he "cured" a ward of criminally insane patients by doing nothing more than cleansing HIMSELF was disseminated online.

In general terms, the ancient version of ho'oponopono was a community affair in which Elders and members of the community would come together to resolve problems according to spiritual principles for the good of each individual and the group as a whole.

The modern version is a solitary practice in which one attempts to correct wrongs in oneself on all levels. The very far-reaching and mind-blowing concept is that ANY wrong which comes into our life in ANY way becomes a part of US, and we are now responsible for it. We then can "cleanse" this within our own heart and soul.

So, for example, if we pick up a newspaper and read about some terrible crime committed in a distant state, that crime then becomes a PART OF US, since it is now in OUR consciousness. And we can then "cleanse" the effects of that crime in ourselves by seeking love, apology, and forgiveness. And our cleansing will then radiate out into the world at large.

That gives a whole new and much more challenging significance to the "we are all one" bromide that is rife in much spiritual and new thought literature.

If we are REALLY "all one," then each of us must take full responsibility for anything that comes into our life. And then "cleanse" it.

Joe Vitale conveys this idea thoroughly in the book by citing his own experiences in applying the technique, as well as his encounters and numerous discussions with Dr Hew Len.

All in all, I really liked this book, and in some ways, it has become a life-changing read for me. Since applying the "zero limits" technique in my life, numerous good things have happened for me, both financially and in family relationships. The idea is that as one goes on cleansing and cleansing, one can reach a state in which anything is possible---Zero Limits.

Joe did give me one special opportunity to "cleanse." I discovered that much of his chapter "What Exceptions?" as well as numerous instances of his purportedly personal conversations with Dr Hew Len, had been copied verbatim from an interview between Dr Hew Len and Cat Saunders, published in 1997!! http://www.drcat.org/articles_interviews/html/hotfudge.html

Well, I guess I'll just go on "cleansing" my diminished respect for Vitale.

Nonetheless, that aside, the book is sure to give you a totally different view about how to transmute "problems" both personal and "outside" yourself into the much higher frequencies of Love, Forgiveness, and Thanks.

That alone is invaluable and makes this book a great and unforgettable resource for positive living.
