Book Description
This legendary book was first published in English in 1990. It has been re-translated and extensively revised, including material not found in the original translation. It is Altshuller's most popular book in Russia on how to become an inventor, and how to solve technical problems. The translator, Lev Shulyak, is himself an accomplished inventor, engineer and TRIZ expert.
Customer Reviews:
Brief introduction of Deceptively simple material.......2005-09-27
Don't be fooled by the description as an "introduction" in the same way most technical fields have "Executive level" texts written for them.... By introduction, the meaning is more "Brief explanation" and "Brief" being in contrast to "Wordy" rather than "Simple, dumbed down but useless in practice."
There is an immense amount of information in the few pages, and the concepts are deceptively simple.... I find I can only make it through a chapter or two at a time before my brain is full from thinking about how to use the ideas offered.....
I am surprised that this sort of material has not been offered at the University level to engineering students -- it would be a perfect fit.
What could TRIZ do in a free, efficient society?.......2002-01-28
I became intrigued by Genrich Altshuller and TRIZ after reading about him in Salon.com a couple years ago. This introduction to his ideas is well worth the money. I just find it ironic that Altshuller developed his theory in a society stereotyped by Western conservative and libertarian intellectuals (e.g., Ayn Rand) as totally lacking incentives for intellectually demanding productive achievements. Altshuller's empirically rigorous inquiry into the real nature of inventive problem solving, based on the Soviet-era equivalent of patents (which shouldn't even have existed, according to some Westerners), discredits the view that the communist system destroyed human initiative.
Too bad Altshuller had to spend his life in such a bureaucratic and inefficient society. If he had been able to introduce TRIZ effectively into the United States back in the 1950's, perhaps we wouldn't be facing some of the technological nuisances we're dealing with now. As it is, some of his dedicated followers have migrated to the West, and are introducing TRIZ into American technical and engineering education. Altshuller's book, unlike how-to-invent books written by Americans, isn't burdened with discussions about the patent process and using one's inventions to make money, which wouldn't have made sense in the Soviet context any way. Instead it's full of real-life examples showing how the principles he discovered can be applied to the real world.
One major drawback in the book, however, is Altshuller's assumption that the reader is better educated than is usually the case in the United States. His comments about what high-school students are supposed to know about physics reveal that the Soviet school system, unlike America's democratically-meddled-with counterpart, didn't dumb down the science curriculum in response to political pressures.
The 'must' first TRIZ book to read.......2001-12-01
TRIZ is not a simple method although it is a very powerful thinking tool yet to be defeated in the technical problem solving arena. This book is a piece of Masterity on how to easily and with entertainment explain the basics of TRIZ. Any person, notonly engineers, wanting to know what TRIZ can do, should pass a very good time reading the book. For the younger, this book will let an influence for searching exploring and solving! problems. Translated also into spanish, the book is a best selling all over the world.
Best TRIZ introduction available........1999-03-01
This is the best introduction to TRIZ available. H.Altov (G.Altshuller) explain many aspects of TRIZ, but don't expect to become a TRIZ master with only this lecture. I recommend this book for those TRIZ is a new subject. Engineers! It's a must have!
Perfect for pupils.......1997-12-01
This book, written by Altshuller (the creator of TRIZ) under a pseudonym, is aimed at secondary school students and while not rigorous in its development, provides an entertaining look at how the methods of TRIZ can be applied to a variety of problems. Semyon D. Savransky, Ph.D. (TRIZnik)

From the bestselling author of Forever Fifty comes a new collection of poems that tickle, console, and offer the pleasure of instant recognition -- the perfect book for any woman anywhere in the vicinity of sixty.
Judith Viorst's "decade" books of verse -- including It's Hard to Be Hip Over Thirty, How Did I Get to Be Forty, and Forever Fifty -- have delighted millions of readers worldwide who relish her wit, warmth, and wisdom. Now here she is with Suddenly Sixty, a funny and touching book that speaks directly to the sixty-ish woman, inviting her to laugh about, sigh over, and come to hopeful terms with the complex issues of this decade of life.
Among the poems in this charmingly illustrated collection are those exploring the joys -- and strains -- of children and grandchildren, and the intimacy of old friends who've "known each other so long/We knew each other back when we were virgins." There are poems that tip their hat to mortality, wrestle with a husband's retirement -- "He's coming with me when I shop at the supermarket/So I won't have to shop alone. I like alone." -- and acknowledge the fact that at this stage of life we'd "give up a night of wild rapture with Denzel Washington for a nice report on my next bone density test." Offering plenty of laughs, a few tears, and cover-to-cover truths, these are poems for everyone who would "rather say never say die than enough is enough." Every woman who has reached this decade will -- rueful and smiling -- find herself in the pages of this book.

suddenly sixty and other shocks of later life.......2007-03-24
it wasn't as humorous as some other books i have read on this subject
A Disappointment.......2006-11-30
I just ordered this book and am sorry I did. Where is the Judith Viorst of the 70's, when my children were young and loved her work? I expected this to be a light-hearted and original look at being "the age we are now," but instead, I found a woman sour -- especially with marriage -- and to a degree with life and grown children. I would not recommend it.
The best way to face sixty is to make fun of it, that is what Viorst does.......2006-10-07
I have not yet hit the landmark sixtieth birthday, but I am closing on it rather fast. It is clear to me that the best way to approach that fateful day is to laugh about it and one of the best ways to accomplish that is to read this book. In general, it pokes good clean fun at aging, although there is an occasional bitter tone when describing some of the more unpleasant aspects of life. Independent of your age, life is what we make of it and Viorst makes fun of what we all will hopefully face someday, the arrival of the sixtieth birthday. After all, the alternative really isn't a great deal of fun to contemplate
Scintillating Sixties.......2004-07-19
Judith Viorst deals with aging gracefully in her truth-giving poems about Suddenly Sixty and Other Shocks of Later Life. Being of a certain age in American society brings a certain angst tempered by the wisdom of experience-if we are lucky and thoughtful. Almost every poem elicits laughter as she ruminates on a variety of topics, including men's inability to ask for directions, the difficulty in apologizing, the family vacation, retirement, or the revenge for the woman dumped.
Judith Viorst has another winner!.......2003-08-26
She's done it again! Anyone 60+ will recognize herself in Judith's spectacular verses. To get the full flavor of these poems, you have to read them out loud with all the proper inflections. I never laughed so hard or cried so much over a book as I did with this one. She hits the nail on the head when she describes life after 60!!

So Maureen's still bitter, eh?..........2007-06-20
Ah Maureen, I see she's still got the venom flowing, bless her heart...
I remember Maureen well from her days in Raleigh, or H-E-double hockey sticks, as she liked to call it. She became semi-famous for her column criticizing everything southern after she had to move to Raleigh, NC because of her husband's job transfer. For a woman who prided herself on her hyphenated last name & feminist stance, I think it was a bitter pill to swallow.
Of course her editor loved all the responses that flowed in following virtually all of her columns, which were nearly always condescendingly critical of the South in general, and Raleigh in particular. Ms Maureen never bothered to look around with an un-jaundiced (is that a word?) eye long enough to attempt an embrace of her new environment. Need an example? She insisted on returning to Filthydelphia...ERR... Philadelphia to have her hair styled, since 'they just don't understand how to do it down here'.
I could go on providing background as to why this is only yet another condescending slam on all habits Southern pretending to be a 'gently humorous look at the South', but there's enough info provided here already as proof.
Need verification? What other book puts such a huge amount of its' content out for people to 'pre-read' before buying? No, this is like one of those sophomoric comedic movies targeted at the 15-25 yr old male audience, the ones where all the 'funny' stuff is contained in the trailers, you know? Only this targets the folks who live in the North and think everybody in the South either lives in a tar-paper shack or on a plantation.
Northerners who either have never visited the South or who think 'The Beverly Hillbillies' and 'The Dukes of Hazzard' represent Southerners accurately should love this book. No one else will. It's interesting that so many of Maureen's neighbors in North Raleigh found both Raleigh, and North Carolina to be wonderful places to live, and embraced the locals' customs and idiosyncracies. Maureen never bothered with that, instead voicing her complaints about the lack of availability of the regional foods of Philadelphia while disparaging the regional foods of central NC & criticizing people for being 'slow' and 'falsely gracious'. Based on Maureen's hypercritical style, I can perhaps understand why someone meeting her would feel 'forced' to act friendly.
Personally, I found it a waste of paper, and am disappointed any trees had to be sacrificed for her vindictiveness. I don't know if Maureen is happy back in Pa., but I do pity her for wasting the several years she spent in Raleigh and for not having the ability nor desire to objectively view anything outside of her personal cocoon.
Yankees Guide.......2007-05-15
Open it to any page a get a great laugh. Great book!
A Yankee's view of Southern Customs!!!.......2006-09-07
Maureen has done herself proud to have such an insight into what makes Southern People so very special!!! We offered her a pardon for being born in Yankee-Land, and bestowed to her an official "Southern Belle" title if she would live here in Raleigh, NC for
10 years. Her husband was so overwhelmed to see the Southern changes in her, he just had to take her back to Philadelphia!!!
Maureen grasped the marvelous culture of the South, and even a little of the funny customs that we have!!
Read "Suddenly Southern" to get an idea what the Yankee's are missing by not moving to the South!! Understandably, not all can appriciate our customs, I guess that is the reason I-95 runs both South and North!!
The defining question is, "How many people have you heard of that Retires to the North!!!! I rest my case!!
Sonny Kellum
Belly Laffs bigger than my bunions!!.......2006-08-09
I loved the humor in this book! Having been born and raised in the Philly area myself and subsequently traveling and working throughout the South, I could easily identify with the author's humorous, playful and ultimately affectionate view of Southern Living, as seen through Yankee eyes. The book reads well if you've got the time to read it chapter by chapter or just a bit, as the time allows. I'm a fixin' to read this one again soon!
I find this very interesting.......2006-08-08
I will be honest,I have not read the book. But I really had to laugh at the southerners comments why they hated it.They said it was offensive and did not portray them correctly. Please get off your high horse! I find that most Southern writers are just as offensive to anyone living North of the Mason-Dixie line.Calling us cold, pagen, rude and so on.Let us all be honest with ourselves here. We all love where we came from and will defend where we were born. We are ALL suspicious of outsiders. The truth is that there is the good, the bad,and the ugly everywhere.I was born and raised up north and married a southern boy. I have been living in the south for 6 years and I am here to stay.I was fortunate that my husband already belonged to our church,so I had an easier time fitting in then normally. But I still get comments and teasing after all these years. But I dont complain and just smile back(how southern of me!)I love where I live and the people I have come to know. They all love me and have learned to like bratwurst.God bless America!

Setting: London 1836
Sensuality: 8
Successful novelist Amanda Briars buys herself a scandalous present to celebrate her 30th birthday. Of gentle birth, unwed, and still a virgin, she contracts with a well-known madam to deliver a lover to her home. When handsome publisher Jack Devlin knocks on her door, it doesn't take him long to figure out that Amanda thinks he's someone else entirely. Intrigued, he stops just short of taking the lady's virginity, for he has other plans for the talented writer.
When she discovers Jack's true identity at a gathering of writers and publishers, Amanda is first angry, then fascinated, as he is a powerful force in the London publishing industry. Jack is determined to court Amanda not only to publish her novels, but also to lure her into his bed, and it isn't long before the two are deeply involved. But their path to happiness is strewn with stumbling blocks: Jack has a past that haunts him, while Amanda's family would be hurt by a scandalous liaison.
Suddenly You is a lush, deeply romantic tale of two free spirits who learn that they are, after all, susceptible to the binding ties of love. The setting provides readers with a different view of London society--the lives of affluent writers and artists rather than the world of the nobility--and a fascinating look into the publishing industry in 1800s London. Once again, Kleypas has delivered a well-written, sensual novel that's sure to hit the bestseller lists. --Lois Faye Dyer

Routine, amateurish.......2007-10-16
I found Lisa Kleypas' SUDDENLY YOU completely unreadable; this qualifies as yet another iteration of the perfect-notorious-rake-initiating-the-imperfect-virgin-to-passion storyline (the words "notorious rake" are used to describe Jack later in the novel). This book revels in the handsome, muscular frame of an experienced rake igniting the virgin passions of a plump, ordinary-of-appearance spinster under slightly different circumstances. Is it me, or are all romance rakes' names Jack? Written mostly from the heroine Amanda's perspective, SUDDENLY YOU is interested in one thing and one thing alone: celebrating notorious rake Jack's chiseled perfection and opulent riches (I counted so many descriptions of the hero's handsome, muscular bearing, I lost count) while he initiates a plump spinster virgin to passion and pleasure. We have the forward, scoundrel comments which Amanda scorns outwardly yet secretly relishes. We have the tender, scientific ministrations of a libertine igniting tingles and ripples through Amanda's core. SUDDENLY YOU never misses a chance to remind us the hero is, in fact, muscular and handsome. We have yet another romance novel's artifice to contrive the attraction of a perfect hero for a mediocre-looking virgin. We have the virgin heroine's insecurities over her plump, ordinary appearance (insecurities which last to the end). We have the hero regaling her with praise about her appearance and tender words of affection. We have the hero encouraging her in business and profession and treating her an equal. In the early love making, we have Amanda wanting more though she knows not what -- yet the hero knows (you know you've read this in some form thousands of times). We have the experienced hero easily aroused and honorably putting a stop to the escalating sensuality ("Amanda I don't trust myself with you any longer. I have to leave while I'm still able"). We even have the virgin heroine yearning to discover the mysterious hero's tortured past and truly know him like no other woman before. The hero Jack is infatuated with her (there's no other word for it) while the heroine Amanda tries to cut things off, predictably prompting Jack to come to a decision about the married life he never wanted. You've read all of this before, the characters are the exact same and the juvenile plotting is the same.
Jack is just like every other handsome cartoon pimp from any romance novel lauding Amanda's brains while Amanda is like every other "witty," ordinary-looking virgin fawning over Jack's muscles. Let me reiterate: there's no real plot here ala Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, Laura Kinsale, Elizabeth Chadwick, Elizabeth Hoyt or Madeline Hunter. And the loving and servicing is so one-sided, I'd read a sweet Julie Garwood romance over this potboiler.
I think romance novelists assume if you give perfectly handsome heroes enough of a lascivious past with a myriad of nameless, faceless and meaningless pretty women, he'll grow tired of beauty. That a plump, ordinary-looking heroine will instantly inflame his attraction based on her "boldness, imagination and wit." Jack notes from his perspective, "her features were pleasant, if not...beautiful." The guy admires wit, cunning, eyes, hair and soft skin -- very deep guy here. I'll never understand the perfect-guy-instantly-attracted-to-the-average-looking-heroine ruse anyway when I know ladies' men prefer women who they find beautiful no matter how many women they've had. Our hero Jack pines for her from the get-go: "he wanted to kiss her... he wanted to charm her..." Best of all from the girl's point-of-view, he wanted to know her. At another point in the novel, Jack appreciates how much Amanda eats in public. Apparently, this makes her more "real" and "authentic," and all the pretty ladies he's known are summarily condemned as shallow.
The heroine of course fosters no such deep motives for her attraction. Tall, handsome, muscular, thick black hair, blue eyes... in a word, perfectly attractive to anyone with eyes. On the other hand, you need to look long and hard to notice our plump spinster Amanda's attractive features, something only apparently possible by mature, experienced heroes. I had to laugh when Jack thinks to himself at one point, "He liked being able to fluster her, something he guessed that few men were able to do." Uhm no, one muscular cartoon pimp is as good as any other judging by the origins of Amanda's attraction! Here, we again have a case of the pot calling the kettle black. A fat, rich man (Kerwin Stephenson) disgusts our plump Amanda after Amanda and Jack break up. Portliness is viewed as attractive in the women of romance novels yet abhorrent in men. If this is sounding like the worst case of a tritely hokey potboiler, well, then it is. When Amanda draws an average-looking widower's attentions who loves children, she accustoms herself -- or settles -- for a "pleasant and ordinary life." She muses, "Hartley would never sweep her off her feet, but help her to keep them planted firmly on the ground." So let me get this straight. Average, modest men who love children are too dull while fat men too repulsive. Talk about a nauseating indulgence on female-biased appearances. Chick-lit? You bet, 10/10 on the chick-lit meter, and that's not a good thing. This book is completely devoid of any inkling of substance or fresh appeal.
Regency romance at its best!.......2007-09-06
This novel enveloped me in its warmth of emotions with such intense and passionate characters I started this book and took
it everywhere with me, for Jack Devlin and Amanda Briars would not let me go. The story is spectacular in its simplicity telling
about love, independence, strength and two imperfect people whom fit perfectly together and their journey of acceptance.
Lisa Kleypas has captured the essence of love for me with these two stunning characters and the tale they tell. Jack is so
focused on his success as a publisher and the money he makes that the meeting with the vibrant Amanda takes him by
surprise. They both want so much out of life, living it on their own terms and both are controlled by the rules of society
though Jack has a healthy lack for certain rules which is expected from a man with a scoundrel status. From the moment they
meet it is a chemistry of emotions that results in a sexual energy that radiated from the pages, luring the reader to read on
and on and before you realize it you have finished the story and feel utterly spellbound by the romance, the characters and
the tale Lisa Kleypas told with Suddenly you!
As this is my first novel by Lisa Kleypas all I can say is that she delivered a high quality regency read that will compel to many
readers in this genre. Suddenly you blends all the regency elements together with a high level of emotions and sizzling heat
that will resonate with the reader. The supporting cast of characters is one that I enjoyed meeting and told so much about the
personality of both Jack and Amanda that it adds more depth and understanding to where they are coming from. All though there
is no real plot in this novel it doesn't need one for it speaks of a man and a woman with their thoughts and feelings and that is all
I needed!
With flair, passion, talent and unforgettable characters Lisa Kleypas written a book that will become an instant favorite!

Suddenly You.......2007-07-26
I purchase books for my mother and she loved the book. Excellent service would order again
delicious!!!.......2007-05-07
Only a strong woman would hire a man for herself on her 30th birthday. And what a trip!! This was witty, funny, and the characters were wonderful. Lisa Kleypas has a wonderful talent for romance novels that you do not want to put down. This one will be kept in my collection and not passed on for others to read.
Looked promising - A disappointment.......2007-04-18
I had been reading some of the reviews about this book and when i saw it at my bookstore, i bought it.
The first few chapters very very promising and i thought this will be an excellent read. But as i read the book, somewhere along the plot i started getting bored and losing interest.
I don't discredit Lisa's sizzling sex scenes but i feel that this book revolved too much around sex, sex and more sex.
What began as a good story plot turned out to be very disappointing.
I don't recommend this book the LK fans.
My friend asked me how i felt about the book and my reply was, "the book is a sex manual which describes different methods to sexual positions."

A good synopsis of 25 years of a superb comic.......2007-06-07
I always enjoy "For Better or For Worse". You don't get this book to see new material, much of it I've already seen in Lynn's other works. Instead you get it because of the commentary and perspective that it puts on a comic that has not only been around for 28 years (as of this posting) but has grown and matured as I have over the past 3 decades.
There are insightful mini-essays from folks near and dear to Lynn that help to give you some insight what it must be like living in the same circles as someone who can produce such great work. I get the sense that she's not the easiest person in the world to be around sometimes, but for all involved those less than rational moments seem to be more than outweighed by the wonders and tribulations expressed by this "parallel family" from Lynn's mind.
The comic is still as fresh as it ever was and I still look forward to reading the strip each evening.
wonderful collection.......2007-05-08
I loved reading through this and catching up on the Pattersons since the comic started being published before I could read. what a truly wonderful collection. this is my favorite comic strip of all time and this book is truly enjoyable. thank you Lynn Johnston for making us laugh and cry through the years.
Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
Smiling down memory lane.......2006-07-19
I just wanted a pick me up so I purchased this book. I have always enjoyed For Better or For Worse and this book did not disappoint. It brought back memories of past stories on this comic strip and a big smile to my face. It was fun watching the kids grow up again and reading the story behind some of her story lines. If you like this comic strip, I would definitely recommend this book!
Some Things Keep Getting Better.......2005-11-20
Congratulations to Lynn Johnston on this milestone! Where so many other cartoonists have either quit the profession entirely (I'm thinking of the untimely demises of Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side) or have publicly professed major cases of deep and lingering burnout (Gary Trudeau) Johnston continues to crank out the highest quality, most universally beloved strip on the comic pages. For Better Or For Worse has been there every day pretty much throughout my whole life, and I can't think of a time I haven't known about it and read it, even if in the early days it did involve me sounding out the words as I lay on the living room floor with my face about five inches off the page, liking the adventures of a refreshingly normal suburban family and trying my best to get some of the puns and inside jokes longtime readers so cherish. It's been something I've grown up with and come to count on among so many changes in this dynamic world. Really, For Better Or For Worse is much more than a comic strip and even more than "art" (although it certainly is that). As anyone who has marched thru life in these last decades and looked forward to the daily dose of the Patterson family can tell you, Lynn Johnston has done little short of opening a window that lets us peer into the goings-on of a group in some ways as meaningful and nearby as our real life neighbors and friends. Thanks, Lynn, and here's to the next twenty-five years!

The exploration of the mind begins! .......2007-09-20
This book is simply amazing! It goes from spoon bending to high levels of awareness description; it is like cake for the curious minds!
This book sort of answers few questions about the mystery of life, however it created more questions than it answered...
Life after death, sure! What's after our spiritual life?
There are few things I didn't like about the book, it talks too much about physics, and there are too many foot notes. However, it seems like any metaphysic books describe complex physics concepts/experiences to say that the current science is off as it tries to stitch all sciences theory into one.
On another note, this book motivated me to buy the Gateway Series from the MTI
(The Monroe Institute), which I received last night... Pretty cool stuff!!! (While trying to achieve the focus level 10, I caught myself snoring, while I was totally aware of all my surroundings!!! Cool!)
The content of the book is also consistent with some other books I read about life after death...
Good exploration!
Not impressed........2007-07-24
This book was a turnoff for me. Not written for the general public. I bought this book based on the fact that it was listed on the Astral Dynamics website. I love Robert Bruce's books on projection so figured it would be a really good read. The author of this book "Suddenly Psychic" went through the Gateway experience and "focused" entirely on it throughout the book. Most commoners do not have the privilege of going through this program so are left lost. Because of this, the author couldn't really relate to the $11 book crowd. Additionally the author claims to visit all of these focus levels that are apparently impossible for any other normal human being to achieve; leaving the feeling that she is an egomaniac and braggart. Personally, I didn't know these experiences were to be classified in a Kindergarten through Doctorate fashion. A spiritual experience is a spiritual experience for goodness sake! Sorry, but a real disappointment for me. There are many much better books out there on the subject. On a happy note, the book cover is pretty.
A book well worth reading!.......2007-06-19
Eloquent. Reasonable. Well-written. Fun to read. Comforting.
A great book.......2007-04-28
I expected some exercises in this book. There were none and that did not bother me. At the end of the book the lack of exercises is all made up for. I love how easy this book is to read. Maureen is never vague and she explains to satisfaction. She is funny and great a great story-teller. There are touching moments. I read this book straight through only breaking for sleep and eat. Reading this book is like reading several books. It's worth the full price. Maureen helped me come to some very significant realizations that are having the effect of changing my life.
**** The Real Five-Star Book Deal ****.......2007-04-18
An absolutely fascinating read from a trust-worthy source, a former fellow scientist with the Department of Defense! Indeed, if you are going to be trained to 'travel' in the psychic realms, why not take that advice from a tour guide that has already been screened by the National Security Agencies of the USA? More so, do you notice the trend that those of us that have had our careers saturated in these "fields-of-information" -- math, physics, computer science as well as electronics -- are the same folks that are coming forward today to share our psychic insights with you? Why? It is because information is power! Learning itself shapeshifts our DNA into a higher order of vibration! That is, by merely reading these tutorials on the 'science of soul' that we write will in fact shift your perception of reality, just as ours has been altered by steeping ourselves for decades into these truths of the cosmos. In other words, you can indeed get wise via "osmosis," hanging out with smart friends, simply allowing your subconscious mental "field of energy" soak up 'Top Secret' insights as your own food for thought in the 21st century! This is not that far-fetched; for instance, we know that combat pilots can deliver ordnance through a high-tech helmet-visor that detects the 'intention' of their ultraviolet brainwaves and eye movements; infantry soldiers that can watch enemy troops traverse terrain in the dead of night with scopes that detect infrared body heat, and so on and so forth. So what is next, a link-up to the worldwide web through a sensor in our "fingerprints?" Get this book; it's a power-packed metaphysical library on the cutting-edge in the physics of psychics!

Customer Reviews:
Loved it!!.......2007-05-20
I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. Ms. Delinsky does a great job making you feel that you "know" each character personally.
Suddenly.......2006-03-20
Like most of Barbara Delinsky's books I found this to be a very interesting story - I look foward to reading more of her books.
Heartwarming, but controlled.......2002-01-08
In a small town with few problems and low crime, the death of a friend and fellow pediatrician stuns a practice, a town, and throws all rules out of the window. Add to this the secrets that it seems all people keep, and once things start coming to light, you aren't sure if you want to cry with them, or wish you were a character in the story to help hold everyone together.
While I enjoyed the book so much that I read it straight through, I felt that B. Delinsky portrayed the women in this book as being controlling to the point of not being able to see their own lives and the inevitable lonely paths that they were choosing in their shortsightedness, until, of course, the men around them were able to "bring them to their senses." This may be the typical theme in many romance novels, but usually it isn't so obvious in Ms. Delinsky's books, so in this way I was disappointed.
Otherwise though, it had mystery, wrongdoing, some knights in shining armor, even princesses and queens in shining armor, and some tasteful steamy romance scenes. All in all, it was a great book, it just had that one downside to it...
Didn't want to put it down!.......2000-06-10
After surviving a suicide in my own family, I could really relate to the characters in this novel. B. Delinsky really hit on the feelings and emotions involved for survivors of suicide. I missed the characters when I was finished with the book!
I Will Keep Reading.......2000-03-27
This is the first book of Delinsky's that I have read, and it won't be the last. First, I loved the fact that, besides the main story, there were two additional storylines that intertwined with the main story. The characters were well rounded. Second, when friend and co-worker Mara dies, those closest to her are forced to take a long look at their lives and what they want from them. This was one of the best books I've read in a while. I am looking forward to reading more of Delinsky's books.
Book Description
One woman learned on the eve of her Roman Catholic wedding. One man as he was studying for the priesthood. Madeleine Albright famously learned from the Washington Post when she was named Secretary of State.
"What is it like to find out you are not who you thought you were?" asks Barbara Kessel in this compelling volume, based on interviews with over 160 people who were raised as non-Jews only to learn at some point in their lives that they are of Jewish descent. With humor, candor, and deep emotion, Kessel's subjects discuss the emotional upheaval of refashioning their self-image and, for many, coming to terms with deliberate deception on the part of parents and family. Responses to the discovery of a Jewish heritage ranged from outright rejection to wholehearted embrace.
For many, Kessel reports, the discovery of Jewish roots confirmed long-held suspicions or even, more mysteriously, conformed to a long-felt attraction toward Judaism. For some crypto-Jews in the southwest United States (descendants of Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition), the only clues to their heritage are certain practices and traditions handed down through the generations, whose significance may be long since lost. In Poland and other parts of eastern Europe, many Jews who were adopted as infants to save them from the Holocaust are now learning of their heritage through the deathbed confessions of their adoptive parents.
The varied responses of these disparate people to a similar experience, presented in their own words, offer compelling insights into the nature of self-knowledge. Whether they had always suspected or were taken by surprise, Kessel's respondents report that confirmation of their Jewish heritage affected their sense of self and of their place in the world in profound ways. Fascinating, poignant, and often very funny, Suddenly Jewish speaks to crucial issues of identity, selfhood, and spiritual community.

Fascinating and enlightening book.......2007-07-03
I couldn't put this book down. I had no idea how many people's Jewish background was hidden, for the sake of survival. I am sure there is more to know and I have the greatest respect for Barbara Kessel's work. I hope she writes more books. It is especially touching for me as I am Jewish.
Discovering that you are Jewish .......2005-05-10
Barbara Kessel tells the story of one- hundred and sixty people she interviewed who ' discovered' their Jewishness. There are four categories, Crypto-Jews ( Sephardic Jews descendant from those driven from Spain during the Inquistion) hidden children( Children whose identity was disguised from them while they were hidden during the Holocaust) Survivors ( Children of Survivors of the Holocaust whose parents tried to hide their identity from them) and Adoptees.
As the Jewish people is a small people who has lost so many in history to persecution and assimilation there is a special sense of 'joy' at the return of those who could be conceived of as lost.
This is an important introductory work on an important subject.
One reader however wisely suggests another category of 'hidden Jews'. Those children of mixed marriages whose parents have raised them without any Jewish heritage or tradition. Certainly they present the largest number of those who might ' discover their identity' . Such discovery however in Jewish terms means more than saying 'Eureka' it involves a learning process by which the individual comes to understand Jewish teaching and law- and decides to practice it, and thus live Jewishly in a full way.
Judaism and Identity.......2003-10-12
Barbara Kessel has written an amazing book about individuals who are raised as Gentiles and discover their Jewish roots. She manages to weave many diverse interviews into her book, and manages to somehow connect all these smoothly. The result is a fascinating look at how individuals were told of their Jewish roots, and the wide range of reactions to this news.
The entire book revolves around questions of identity. What is it to be a Jew? Can you be "half-Jewish"? Is Judaism a religion, a race, a culture - or all of the above? What if you know you are Jewish but you lack the documentation to prove it - do you convert? Why do some latch on to the revelation that they're Jewish, while others shrug and say that it doesn't change anything for them? Can you ever really BE Jewish if you were raised with Christian theology - or will you always be playing "catch-up" with Jews who went to Hebrew school and have a lifetime of memories of holidays and bar/bat mitzvahs?
This book was such an enticing read, I could hardly put it down. However, the most fascinating chapter for me was the last, for in it the author discusses the possibility of "collective unconscious" - that a group-specific unconscious memory from the Jews present at Sinai is passed through generations as sort of a genetic memory. This phenomenon could be one possible explanation for why one who seems drawn to Judaism later learns he has Jewish roots. Or maybe there's another reason for these "coincidences."
Barbara Kessel has written a compelling book on Judaism and identity. I highly recommend this book for anyone - Jewish or not. I see that it would also be helpful for anyone undergoing a conversion to another religion or one who is grappling with questions of identity.
Suddenly Jewish.......2002-05-28
The author introduces you into the inner lives of the interviewees with mastery ease. They share with her and the reader their traumatic experiences, meanwhile you follow intensely their voyage to the discovery of their selves.I just couldn't stop reading it.These stories made me weep and smile. The book it's about self negation, self disconnection and justified and unjustifed fears on one side but also about self discovery, renewal and bravery on the other side.
The Writing Style Hampers The Effectiveness.......2002-02-27
I'll dare to be different with my opinion on Suddenly Jewish. I agree that its good that the accounts of these one hundred sixty cases were documented to show the effects of the long-term persecution of the Jews. Whether it was the Holocaust or the Spanish Inquision, the long terms effects on many Jews from a psychological point of view runs very deep. A few stories, particularly the one about the priest discovering his Jewish roots does stand out.
However, as much as I applaud documentation that details the persecution and torment the Jews have faced, the manner in which the stories just shoot out at you is annoying and difficult to comprehend and follow. I guess I would rather prefer it if Barbara Kessel documented more clearly and sucinctly a few of the accounts of these Suddenly Jewish people rather than providing brief snipets of 160 cases. The stories practically run into one another and it is difficult to interpret where one starts and one ends.
After a while many of the cases sound identical as there is little that is unique. Three of the sections deal mostly with the Holocaust. Don't get me wrong, we should never forget the Holocaust, but it would have been nice to have a little more depth about some of these people. How about a section discussing some issues that involve the Middle East? With Israel being surrounded by so many Arab nations, you wonder if there are some Jews in those countries who were raised gentile or otherwise.
Also, how about a section that illustrates cases of intermarriage which have nothing to do with a political event whre the children are brought up in a gentile home but later are curious as to the Jewish side of their family tree. Kessel most definitely should have organized the chapters of this book better to outline more situations of Gentile children discovering their Jewish roots.
A few important reminders of the path the Jews have travelled. However, the organization and the documentary style of writing hurts this book's appeal.
