A Volcano in My Tummy presents a clear and effective approach to helping children and adults alike understand and deal constructively with children's anger. The book offers engaging, well-organized activities which help to overcome the fear of children's anger which many adult care-givers experience, and distinguishes between anger the feeling, and violence the behavior. Primarily created for ages 6 to thirteen, it is accessible for use in class or at home.

5 out of 5 stars Great for young kids with anger problems.......2007-05-25

Excellent short workbook for kids with anger problems. Probably most appropriate for kids between 5 and 9. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars A Volcano in My Tummy.......2006-06-29

It was not what I thought. I thought it was a book to read to kids, instead it is a WONDERFUL workbook with ideas, activities, etc. Definately for teachers but very useful even for this grandma!

5 out of 5 stars so helpful.......2006-03-17

I am an Elementary School Counselor. I got this book to help me put together small groups for some of my students. The book is wonderful. It is full of great and effective ideas. I bought many resources in the past, and this is by far the best one to help children understand and work through anger.

5 out of 5 stars Right Combination for Anger and Anxiety.......2004-12-18

I have been working this past year on all areas of helping my child and myself learn to manage anger, stress, anxiety and frustration.I am lucky to be working with a teacher that is willing to explore and take advice from authors like Elaine Whitehouse. This book takes the chaos out of anger. Adults and children learn how to recognize and deal with and express normal feelings of anger. This, coupled with the anxiety and anger management techniques from Lori Lite's "Children's Awareness Curriculum" and "Indigo Dreams" CD have been just the right combination for me and my child. The more we as a community are exposed to these books and concepts the quicker we will have a peaceful, communicative society able to resolve conflict before the volcano errupts. This should be a required class for all children and adults.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Anger Management.......2004-09-01

I use the activities and concepts in this book all of the time! As a school social worker and child therapist, I find this book to be invaluable. It has engaged all types of children and can work well in individual sessions as well as groups. Although it is intended for school age children; I have used some of the "lessons" for preschool children effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read for my 7-year-old.......2007-09-15

My daughter could not put this book down once she started reading it. She loves the MAGIC TREE HOUSE series so much!

5 out of 5 stars Historically accurate.......2007-06-21

We paired this with the Discovery Kids Magazine on Pompeii and found out that this book is a great way to find out about Pompeii and what happened, not just as a tourist attraction. It really puts kids in the moment of the time period. Every detail, down to the arrangement of the city was accurate. You can actually find a map replicating Pompeii and show your child where Jack and Annie went. Wow. Talk about subject integration! You know it is a great book when you can go down the list of Bloom's Taxonomy and use the book to create activities for every level.

We are leaving today to buy every book in the series.
Perfect for homeschooling.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-02

My 1st grader hates to put them down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. When he was in kindergarten, the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not given her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

4 out of 5 stars Vacation Under the Valcano - Magic Tree House #13.......2006-01-29

Shortly before leaving for vacation, Jack and Annie remembered that they needed to go to the magic tree house to solve a mystery. Morgan said "your aventure is going to the Roman times you need to find this book or it will be lost forever""WOW! I always wanted to go to the Roman times this will be fun Annie" said Jack.

The magic tree house takes them to the seaside town of Pompeii during Roman times, which was 2,000 years ago. Many Romans traveled to Pompeii for vacation. They built large houses called villas and planted groves of olive trees on the slopes of a nearby mountain called Mount Vesuvius.

As they walked into the town of Pompeii, they noticed there were no birds and the stream under the bridge was dried up. Once in Pompeii, a soothsayer said "go home". Jack and Annie walked by the town forum, public baths and the Temple of Jupiter while looking for the library.

When they get to the library, they start looking for the book "Vir Fortissinus in Mundo". After finding the book, Jack opened the door and noticed everything crashing down in front of them. The ground started to shake as Mount Vesuvius erupted into a deadly volcano. "That is what the soothsayer meant" said Jack.

Jack and Annie ran from the library and headed back to the tree house. As they ran, a great cloud of pumice, ash, and burning rock formed over the city. When it rained down on Pompeii,it coverd the town. They used pillows to cover their heads from the falling ash.

The tree house was in the olive grove on the side of the mountain. Jack and Annie were running towards the volcano while everyone else was running away from it. When they got to the dried-up stream, the brige. They were trapped in the pumice, when a big, strong man named Hercules saved them. He pulled them from the pumice and took them to the other side of the stream.

Jack and Annie made it to the magic tree house, which took them back home. Morgan made them Master Librarians and they went on vacation with their family.

5 out of 5 stars Volcanos wow!.......2005-10-25

My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for the last couple months and we love them. These are the first books that my son has taken a real interest into, checking them out and reading them on his own. Vacations under the Volcano is our favorite one so far. After checking out a bunch from the library we finally decided to buy a set, and he was so disappointed that this one wasn't part of the set that he bought it seperatly on his own. This book has sparked a whole new interest for him.
I like that this story is based on a real historical event. As opposed to some of the others, like Sunset of the Sabertooth, which is one of my least favorites. As far as the danger goes, which another reviewer mentioned, I think Mary does a great job keeping the stories exciting. They would really become dull if the kids only strolled through meadows. For another scary one try Earthquakes in the Early Morning.
On a side note, its good to read them in order, but we didn't and you definatly don't have too.

Book Description

Geoffrey Firmin, a former British consul, has come to Quauhnahuac, Mexico. Here the consul's debilitating malaise is drinking, and activity that has overshadowed his life. Under the Volcano is set during the most fateful day of the consul's life--the Day of the Dead, 1938. His wife, Yvonne, arrives in Quauhnahuac to rescue him and their failing marriage, inspired by a vision of life together away from Mexico and the circumstances that have driven their relationship to the brink of collapse. Yvonne's mission is to save the consul is further complicated by the presence of Hugh, the consul's half-brother, and Jacques, a childhood friend. The events of this one day unfold against a backdrop unforgettable for its evocation of a Mexico at once magical and diabolical.

Under the Volcano remains one of the most powerful and lyrical statements on the human condition and one man's constant struggle against the elemental forces that threaten to destroy him.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art, a hallucinatory journey through the soul..........2007-03-27

I like to tease my literary friends by saying "the film is always better than the novel", which sends them off into seizures. However, this is one instance that the book is vastly superior to the film, and it is undoubtedly one of the greatest books I have ever had the pleasure to read. Malcolm Lowry's prose style and mastery of the English language is beautiful to behold, and reading Under the Volcano fills you with wonder and awe. It's a masterful book, depicting the last day of an alcoholic (probably based on Lowry himself, who was a chronic alcoholic). The novel doesn't really have a narrative sense, but it has a hallucinatory, mystical quality that I adore. It reminds me a lot of an Alejandro Jodorowsky film, in that it's not straightforward at all, but it is a destination, and you will get there on Lowry's/Jodorowsky's path. As much as I like John Huston, I never cared for the film version, which I saw before reading the novel. If you want to see a great film about Lowry, a Canadian documentary called Volcano was made in the 1970's. It was released on VHS, but it is notoriously hard to find. It makes a great companion to this novel, as you understand the agony of Lowry's life, and the pain that he had to go through to produce one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. This is one of my favorite books, one you can read again and again and find something new in it. Lowry never really regained the heights of this novel again, and ended up leaving behind unfinished manuscripts that were edited by his wife, Margarite. Still, this is a true work of art, and we should be thankful that Lowry left this for us....

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, Mr. Lowry.......2007-02-24

In a little over a year, I've read more than 50 novels. Of those, there was only one which I found unbearable to read and which I put down. Now there are two. Ironically, the first one, "Lord Jim", is actually referenced in this book, a bad omen if there ever was such a thing.

I wanted to like this book. Judging from the previous reviews, this was a brilliant masterpiece with such depth and subtlety that Lowry was a genius to behold. That my be true, but I soon lost all interest and hope of getting anything meaningful from this book. Every time I sat down to read, I found my eyelids becoming heavier, as the stream of consciousness narrative succeeding in draining out my life force. I gave it a chance, as I read nearly half, but finally I felt a great burden lifted off my shoulders when I decided to give up. And for someone who reads for pleasure, I could hardly justify slogging through this until the bitter end while I could be reading much more enjoyable novels.

Now perhaps I am not as "sophisticated" or "intellectual" as others who adore this work, but I just didn't "get it." Perhaps looking through the eyes of a drunk isn't the best idea, for the non-sequitur narrative was hazy and confusing. The countless symbolism with the "pariah dog" and plants seemed to be repeated endlessly, but with no clear connection (as far as I'm concerned) to the main storyline. The story is literally drowning in a whiskey river, filled to the brim with minute details and obtuse symbolism.

This novel takes place in a day, but seems to drag on endlessly with no climax or turning point. If you're up for a challenge, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, save yourself from this tedious novel and give this one a pass.

5 out of 5 stars Eerily Depictive of Alcoholic Mind [11] [39] [T].......2007-02-12

In order to follow one party for one day, the reader of this book must intensely focus upon the vagaries attributable to a dipsomaniacal protagonist - the Consul.

Lowry's relatively autobiographical novel (at one time there is reference to leave Mexico far away where the protagonist will handwrite while his adoring wife types his manuscript), can confuse the reader on many levels. First, the Consul's inebriation by mescal contorts and warps perspectives and thoughts. Second, the liquor's effect has numbed his mind where at times he babbles and makes no sense - the worst being in the beginning when his wife returns and they calmly discourse although he makes no sense and his statements are actually frightening to the reader who is just being introduced to the Consul. Third, he phonetically spells many dialogues from Mexican speakers, so as to capture their pronunciation of English words. Fourth, he uses a great amount of Spanish words which loses those unfamiliar with the language for many interesting and untranslated portions of the book. And, lastly, the weaving of temporary with the past, through an intoxicated's mind, can be both perplexing and diabolically ingenious.

If that does not scare some readers, I pledge this truth to others: even though other readers assert this is easier to read than Joyce's comparable "Ulysses", know two things: "Ulysses" is about as difficult a read in the English language as there is; and this book is not easy as well.

But, it is worth reading. His ability to create hallucinatory sensation on paper is majestic. At certain times, I really felt I understood the mental anguish experienced by the d.t.'s as reflected by the Consul's perspective of events about him. Lowry's writing is both direct and embellished. The topic is much like Hemingway - English-speaking person residing amid Spanish-speaking people in the Spanish-speaking nation. His writing, however, reminds me more of John Fowles - "French Lieutenant's Woman" and "Magus."

This is a masterpiece of its own, and I greatfully appreciate having read this work of art. Just months ago I never heard of Lowry, now I intend on reading some of his other works.

5 out of 5 stars Lowry spells "fart" P-H-A-R-T..........2007-02-04

This book is a complete masterpiece. No question about it. However, if someone told me they'd tossed it after five pages, I'd understand totally. Not that there is an intellectual baseline for enjoying it; rather, it's a question of the style of book one enjoys. This book is an elegy, a tone poem, prose for the sake of prose. Where one word suffices, Lowry inserts two. Where one metaphor is appropriate, Lowry inserts three. The stylization and the facility with words are the genius of the book, not the plot. (A drunk guy drinks a lot, interacts with his ex-wife and half-brother, then is shot by a policeman.) You'll know quickly whether this is your cuppa. Even if it isn't (as it isn't mine), the slog through pays dividends.

5 out of 5 stars This is an exceedingly beautiful novel........2006-10-11

To focus on the picture and miss the brush strokes, I think, is to miss the point. To spend your whole life and all you could produce is one beautiful sentence, would that be enough? Or a whole novel of beautiful sentences? If this is all you had to recommend you, your entry into heaven would be guaranteed. Mr. Lowry probably finds heaven boring. I think the fact that there is not a real plot points to the fact the writing is what matters here. This is an exceedingly beautiful novel. I read some sentences over and over again in wonder. I read the sentences to my 8 and 10 year old who found them fascinating.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read for CR relocators!.......2007-05-14

We have been to CR for a visit and are now considering the BIG move. This book covers every you would need to know and surprises you with information you didn't think of. We have even shared this information with our family that has lived there for 5 years and it has helped them. It also gave a brief but interesting history of Costa Rica as well as current government, economics and culture. Does a good job of explaining the cultural differences which are most important to the person considering a move anywhere! One thing I might stress... the author states several times that English is taught in the schools. This might lead you to believe that you will have little problem with communication. In our trip last year to the Central Valley and the Pacific Coast we did not meet one person that understood us or could speak to us in English. I highly advise, begin you Spanish Lessons before your anticipated trip!

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide!.......2007-03-23

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable - ultra-reliable eco-tourism guide.......2007-03-06

I used this book, and the community-based eco-tourism agency recommended in this book, to plan a two-week trip. I was alone, female, and non-Spanish speaking. I had the time of my life. Everything went off without a hitch. Great people, waterfalls, food, views, and adventures galore. Thanks to the author. None of the other guidebooks came close to the insight and accuracy of this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-17

[...]The 18th edition of New Key to Costa Rica improves upon a veritable classic.

2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the guidebook which guides travelers toward
tasteful family-run lodgings and communities that are actively protecting the rural environment.

Written in a style that feels like a conversation with a travel guide, the New Key provides countless insights about the culture, the environment and the people of Costa Rica.

First authored by Jane Wallace, the book was then updated by her daughter Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher. Beatrice prepared this edition alone, but it is easy to see that the text has been guided by a number of joyful souls.

In 1992 this book was the first guidebook to use a green-rating system. In this edition, the rating system is downplayed in favor of focusing on community efforts.

Focusing on family farm visits allows Blake to show travelers the connections among organic agriculture, appropriate energy technology and diverse ecosystems. She writes: "By visiting these communities, not only will you meet some lovely people, but you will be inspired by their ability to put innovative principles into practice."

For travelers wishing to experience tropical nature, there is no better immersion than visiting the communities that are at the forefront of conservation.

Exciting adventure sports are not omitted. One of the highlights of the book is a review of the country's best canopy tours. Additional "adventure reports" showcase innovative efforts throughout the country.

Among the informative sidebars are capsule reviews of the Talamanca Ecotourism Network, the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center and turtle watching at Ostional Wildlife Refuge.

New Key to Costa Rica covers all the bases - from the practical details of deciding when and where to go to tips on learning Spanish and volunteer vacations. For those seeking an eco trip, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars This is it, the real thing.......2006-04-25

Absolutely the best of the four (you can guess the other three) books we took, because this on focuses on the off-beat and the green. Use it to locate the indepth Costa Rica, the one that gets you away from everyone else and makes you feel happy about it.

His mouth is a volcano! My Mouth Is A Volcano takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches children a witty technique to capture their rambunctious thoughts and words for expression at an appropriate time. Told from LouisÂ’ perspective, this story provides parents, teachers, and counselors with an entertaining way to teach children the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak.

Knocked my socks off - a super story, packed with surprises and twists - and, because the legal angle ran surreptitiously in the background, it didn't labour or get bogged down.

Forget the Grisham thing - Jonathan Miller has placed himself as a serious rival to Harlan Coben.

Great stuff, looking forward to picking up my next one.

Book Description

A riveting combat memoir of an Iwo Jima hero-the youngest Marine in history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor

Here is an eloquent, plainspoken combat memoir of a young soldier who belongs in a class with World War II combat hero Audie Murphy. At the height of the Battle of Iwo Jima, Jack Lucas and three other Marines attacked a Japanese pillbox. When two enemy grenades landed in their midst, Private Lucas jumped on both grenades, just as they were exploding. His buddies were saved, but Lucas was torn apart. Miraculously, he survived-but just barely. For this brave action seventeen year- old Jack Lucas from North Carolina became the youngest soldier in the twentieth century, and the youngest Marine in history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. In Indestructible, we learn of the rocky road that led Jack Lucas to Iwo Jima-from his lying about his age to join the Marines to his going AWOL in order to join the action in the Pacific-and his arduous, frightening recovery following his heroic sacrifice. Today, wherever Jack Lucas speaks crowds gather to honor him and pay tribute to Marine heritage and pride as well as to pay their respects to one of America's greatest generations.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Tough Story about a Tough Guy.......2007-02-15

Despite what some other reviewers had to say, it should be noted at the outset that Jack Lucas didn't finish high school, and obviously didn't go to Columbia for a writing degree. He simply lied his way into enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 14, and ultimately conned his way into frontline units until he finally reached combat at Iwo Jima. Having wanted to be a Marine and fighting since he was 11, his dedicated pursuit of his goal seems impossible to believe, but it did happen, and this is his story.

Having met Jack, he is exactly like what the story sounds like. He is proud, patriotic, and unabashed in his belief that his actions that day were less significant than those who never returned. I found the story of his life after the war to be interesting, especially what his own wife would attempt later.

This is not going to tell the story of the whole war, and isn't a literary work that rivals Shakespeare, but it is one man's story, and well worth the time to read it.

2 out of 5 stars 212 Pages of Self-Praise.......2007-02-06

Mr. Lucas has just spent 212 pages doing nothing more than patting himself on the back and telling the public how big a hero he is. He also spends a great amount of time in stating how he relishes the limelight he is in and will go to any length to exploit the Medal of Honor to his own use. From some of key phrases in the book, the reader would think he was the only Marine on Iwo Jima. While I highly respect him for the action for which the medal was awarded, I do not respect the idea of using it to ones advantage. The author also seems to think that what he cannot accomplish with the Medal of Honor around his neck, his two fist will get for him.

3 out of 5 stars Not a perfect story, but interesting nevertheless........2006-11-26

There can be little doubt that this book wouldn't have been written if this aging hero had not been singled out by President Clinton during his presidency in a nationally televised State-of-the-Union address. Mr. Lucas was the President's special guest for the occasion, and one can understand why. While Lucas is an unquestioned military hero, he was less of a hero to his children and his first wife. (Those who were on the receiving end of his quick and violent temper may not view him in the hero light either.) A self-described womanizer, Lucas was the perfect foil for the Clinton plot to bolster the President's image by profiling a man who is living proof that no matter how badly you conduct your private life, it doesn't have to interfere with your service to country. This book will read like a poem to Clintonites, but may blanch a bit to the few of who still believe personal morality matters to whatever task you set yourself to.

Lucas is a hero, and his professions of faith in the Lord who protected him not only on Iwo Jima but in several other major life crisis redeems this book and makes it worthwhile. But if your looking for the ALL American hero, better look elsewhere for reading material.

3 out of 5 stars good, but less than I expected.......2006-08-26

I am a retired Marine and I generally read several books on the Marine Corps each year; I had never heard of Jack Lucas before this book. But, I came to believe that his discplinary issues, has resulted in the Marines excluding him from the general USMC history, we teach our young Marines at recruit trainng or OCS.

I am glad I bought the non-abridged audiobook edition (part of daily commute). Its audio quality was pretty good. It is a good recounting of history, but someone should have listed to it before it was finalized on CD. There were repeations of several sentences which made we wonder if my CD player was on the blink. In addition, references to "126" should have redone they should have been redone as "1st Bn, 26 Marine Regiment". Better for non-Marine listeners.

5 out of 5 stars The Best War Story Ever!.......2006-08-07

If people are expecting another war story, they are going to get a whole lot more. D. K. Drum does an unbelieveable job telling the incredible story of the youngest Medal of Honor recipient in the Twentieth Century. Jack Lucas is so humble about the glory that has been thrust upon him. He handled fame as well as any 17 year old could be expected too, but after all we have no one to compare him too. He is unique and spectacular. If you don't like this one, you aren't a true patriot. By far the best war story ever!

"El Monstruo!"

Every day is the same for Pablo's father. Then one afternoon the ground growls, hisses smoke, and swallows up his plow. A volcano is erupting in the middle of his cornfield!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The hill of fire.......2003-04-18

I thought this book was really good. If you read my report l think you should read the book. It is about a man and his boy. His father is a farmer and one day the boy comes out and helps his father. Then they hit the top of a volcano. Which is in the ground and it destroys everything. Then they rebuild everything.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Good.......2002-08-05

Hill of Fire tells the true story of a Mexican farmer who encounters the beginnings of a volcano in his corn field. The vocabulary is very easy, and yet the author captures the mood of the sleepy village that was changed forever by El Monstruo. I recommend this book to teachers of grades 2 and 3 and to children who are just moving away from picture books.

4 out of 5 stars HILL OF FIRE.......2001-05-10

I think you should read. Hill of Fire. It is very good. I like the middle part. My favorite part is when the volcano erupts. I think you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars True Story!.......2000-01-05

I use this book with my ESL students 2nd-8th grade. What really makes it interesting is that it is a true story! I've been there, seen the church (what's left of it) and met the people. The only thing not true is there is no hot dog stand. Excellent book and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars High Interest For ESL Learners, 2nd grade to adult........1999-12-08

This historical fiction story relates to those who lead a hum-drum existence in meeting daily responsibilities. A dirt farmer in a small village in Mexico complains that nothing every happens in his life. Then, one eventful day, his ox-drawn plow buries itself so deep in the earth that smoke (the smoke of a volcano) begins to escape. Older students from Mexico will especially enjoy that cultural's influence in the story sequence (written like a simplified proverbial folktale) and illustations. If read aloud and read well, your students's laughter will tell you they understand the story.

This is a great series...and it says right in the description it is a cassette audiobook. Its really awful someone would give this a bad review for any reason. A lot of audiobooks are still on cassette.. unfortunate but true.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Set of Books!.......2007-01-10

I mistakenly thought these were books and as they were intended as a Christmas present, was terribly disappointed. You can't tell by the title that they are NOT books, but rather cassette tapes. I don't think my grandaughter even owns anything that would play cassettes in this day and age! Be careful what you are ordering!

The year is 1962. John Glenn is in orbit, Audrey Hepburn is breakfasting outside Tiffany's, Elvis is recording "Bossa Nova Baby," and in Istanbul, a middle-aged Dutch spy has just met a fiery death. Enter Jack Mallory and Laura Morse, clandestine operatives for the Consultancy. He's a laconic ex-soldier from the oil fields of Corpus Christi; she's a wintrily beautiful Boston Brahmin and an adept at Floating Hand karate. The murdered man was their colleague, and the Consultancy has ordered them to exact revenge on the genially murderous Piotr Nemerov and the playboy-turned-arms-dealer Anton Rauth, who is holed up in his HQ in an extinct South Seas volcano preparing for a literally earthshaking confrontation.

Into the Volcano is an homage to James Bond, Modesty Blaise, and the golden age of the spy thriller, a time when America was still innocent and its enemies possessed a dash of Space Age style. It takes the reader from New York to Istanbul, from Cannes' balmy breezes to the island known as the Dragon's Throne, and at last into the molten heart of the Cold War.

The year is 1962. John Glenn is in orbit, Audrey Hepburn is breakfasting outside Tiffany's, and Elvis is recording ""Bossa Nova Baby."" The Gibson and Détente are both in fashion, and both are served icy cold. And in the Foreigners' Quarter of Istanbul, a middle-aged Dutch spy has just met a fiery death.

Enter Mallory and Morse. Jack Mallory is a laconic ex-soldier from the oilfields of CorpusChristi. Laura Morse is a frostily beautiful Boston Brahmin adept at Floating Hand karate. Both are top operatives for the Consultancy, a shadowy covert-services network run by the enigmatic British ex-commando known as Gray. The Consultancy exists to execute those missions too dangerous or too dirty for the world's conventional intelligence agencies. The murdered man was their friend and colleague, and Gray has ordered them to take revenge.

It won't be easy. All signs point to athlete-turned-arms-dealer Anton Rauth, a man of vast means, refined tastes, and questionable sanity, currently holed up in his HQ inside an extinct South Seas volcano. His minions include two battle-hardened ex-GRU assassins: the dour Sasha Kurski and the genially murderous Piotr Nemerov, both rigorously trained and utterly remorseless. It's Mallory's job to let himself be captured. It's Laura's job to help him fight his way free again. With what they learn, they must penetrate the ""nightclub"" called Club Europa and then -- armed with little but scuba gear and nerve -- Rauth's island fortress itself.

But as they know all too well, Rauth is expecting them. He may even have factored them into his plans. And his plans -- for both Mallory and America -- are literally earthshaking ...

Into the Volcano is an homage to James Bond, Modesty Blaise, and the golden age of the spy thriller, a time when America was more innocent and its enemies possessed a dash of Space Age style. It takes the reader from bustling New York to steamy Istanbul, from Cannes' balmy breezes to the island known as the Dragon's Throne, and at last into the molten heart of the Cold War.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Retro Spy Fun.......2007-08-11

This 60s era cold war throwback is admirably played straight, and not for Austin Powers style laughs. There are even a few nicely drawn whacked-out thugs in the Elmore Leonard mode. Let's hope the true blue heroes are given a little more substance in the follow-ups.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Sixties Spy Novel.......2007-02-09

For those who like the James Bond and Matt Helm books, this one is a must. It's every bit as good as the best of Fleming. The book is set in 1962 (like Fade to Blonde) and is reminiscent of not only the Bond books, but the Avengers (and a little Cool & Lam) as well in that it's a team of a man and woman spies. There's lot's of humor, but Phillips never resorts to satire ala Austin Powers. His villain is one to rival Dr. No, Blofeld or Goldfinger.

3 out of 5 stars Resurrecting Bond.......2004-12-06

Ok, so it's genre fiction. But, all things considered, it's pretty good genre fiction. Forrest DeVoe, Jr. is no John LeCarre, but (thank God) he's no Harlan Coben either.

Into the Volcano (HarperCollins, anticipated publication 2004), his debut novel under the DeVoe nom de plume, is a redux of every subgenre of the espionage thriller. A Dutch spy has been murdered in Istanbul and the dynamic duo of clandestine American operatives, Jack Mallory and Laura Morse, are sent to Turkey to avenge his death. Amidst Mallory's pursuit of Central Asian tail (of course) and Morse's silent pining for Jack (of course), they uncover a Cold War plot (of course) to smuggle all the gold out of the Turkish Treasury via underground tunnels. Posing as New York tourists in a troubled marriage, Jack lures the killers out into the open so they can kick some Soviet (of course). But the spectre of Cold War menace has just begun. The diabolical Russians are plotting world domination from their secret compound on the tropical island of He'Konau and Jack and Laura must storm the compound and disrupt their plans.

Your mission (should you accept it) is to get through this book without laughing. The premise is ridiculous, the characters have the depth of a frisbee, and the plot devices are cliched and predictable.

Still, for fans of the espionage novel, this is an interesting read in terms of its postmodern dedication to total eclecticism. The original British spy novels, marked by the 1907 publication of The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad, were realistic, morally ambiguous, and nicely written, with little sex or violence. Until World War II, ethical ideas about espionage precluded glamorizing it in fiction. However, after World War II and the birth of the American spy novel, the operative's life became a metaphor for existential male angst - unambiguously heroic, unrealistic, violently macho, and chauvinistically sexy.

No one epitomized this more than Ian Fleming's 1950's-60's hero, James Bond. The name Bond - James Bond - is synonymous with spy fiction, though the books were misogynist and completely oblivious to their Cold War political context. Reveling in sadomasochistic sexuality, Bond resents being teamed up with a woman, whom he calls "a silly [...]" and likens to all women in their existence for his sexual recreation.

Nineteen seventy-four brought George Smiley in John LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which shifted the genre from hyper-masculine fantasy to well-written, complex plots and a healthy dose of realism about the Cold War.

Then, in 1984, Tom Clancy published The Hunt for Red October. Playing on American fears of the Reagan-era arms race, Clancy nevertheless ushered in the spy novel of the 21st century. Blacks, women, the disabled, and immigrants now play heroic roles (granted, still without any nuance or subtlety) and the technology is updated for modern verisimilitude.

In true postmodern fashion, Forrest DeVoe, Jr. takes what he likes and leaves the rest. Jack Mallory is macho, but he's not a pig about it, even forcing himself to admit to Laura's superior talents in hand-to-hand combat. Into the Volcano mixes the assassination thriller with the Cold War setting of the defection thriller and the traitorship of the mob hunt.

The book's saving grace is decent writing that doesn't have its eyes on the big screen. In the era of Dan Brown and Harlan Coben, whose books read like badly-written screenplays, DeVoe spares us the characters who have ridiculously mundane and pathetically humorous one-liners running through their heads in the midst of a crisis.

Into the Volcano is fairly lukewarm and forgettable, but, for fans of the genre, it's a fun romp through the history of the spy novel.

5 out of 5 stars excellent spy drama .......2004-09-08

Hired by the Consultancy, Van Vliet is in Istanbul where he believes that the Club Europa is being built as a cover for something else. Before he informs Gray, the head of the Consultancy, a profit-making black-ops organization, he is killed in his shower by a head that emits flame instead of water. It is 1962 and the cold war is fought by the Consultancy who the CIA hires to find out what is going on in Istanbul.

Gray sends his two best operatives, Jack Mallory and Laura Morse to Istanbul where they learn that their old nemesis Anton Rauth hired mercenaries to kill them. Still alive, the duo find an earth digging machine in the cellar of the Club used to construct a tunnel into the Turks equivalent of Ft. Knox. Jack and Laura are sent to the volcanic island of He' Konau where Rauth has his base of operations inside the volcano. There assignment is to gather intelligence but they are caught snooping and only a miracle will save their lives and that of millions of people when Anton unleashes his master weapon.

No doubt about it, the team of Mallory and Morse are the equal of 007 and other spy heroes that graced the pages of the spy thrillers of the 1960's. There is action, action and more action but like James Bond there is much tongue in cheek humor that lessens the tensions when it threatens to become overwhelming. Forest DeVoe Jr. has written an excellent spy drama and one can only hope he writes more starring the intrepid protagonists Mallory and Morse.
