Book Description

From its eye-popping cover to the last page, this collection of optical illusion, hyperrealism, and visual puns is a fun and fascinating exploration of five centuries of trompe l'oeil paintings. Each of the forty paintings in this book is presented twice—a first glimpse of the painting captures one reality, and then a subsequent view reveals the visual deception within. In this way readers are introduced to some of the tricks artists have skillfully and playfully deployed over the years to manipulate spatial perception. A Trick of the Eye includes examples of trompe l'oeil pieces from Renaissance masters such as van Eyck and Veronese to modern works by Rene Magritte and Duane Hanson, among many others. Engaging texts describe each work, but the real magic is in the illustrations, which offer an intriguing visual experience.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Art taken to a new level.......2006-02-22

This book is a good introduction to the incredible art of Trompe l'oeil, the purpose of which is to 'trick the eye' into believing that the two dimensional painting in front of you is actually a three dimensional object in space. The examples chosen here are fabulous representations of hyperrealistic art, ranging from 1660 A.D. to 1980.

The authors start with the history, and then move on to different types of trompe l'oeil. This art of creating an illusion lives on even after the advent of photography, but it now takes various forms, such as sculptures, trick photography, murals on big buildings, and 'living art', a motionless person clothed as a sculpture, all of which are covered in the book.

The pictures accompanying the history are small, but that is confined to the first 20 pages of the book. Each of the works featured is then explained in greater depth, illustrated by a full page reproduction, and some two-page close-ups views. Here you can see why trompe l'oeil art made people want to touch it, since they otherwise believed it was real! This illusion is especially true of big paintings like murals which create the illusion of space and depth so convincingly that the viewer believes the landscape is real.

This book is a tribute to the amazingly painstaking work that artists have produced over the centuries. It is a book for people who love realistic art, and for those who appreciate the highest level of skill in any human endeavour.

5 out of 5 stars The Paradox of the Hyper-Real.......2005-05-21

The purpose of art is to depict reality. Or at least that is a purpose, and it was the main purpose before such talents as the Impressionists insisted that artistic expression was best displayed in dazzling colors and blurred shapes. The depiction in a painting was usually at some remove from reality; if you saw a painting of a landscape, for instance, you did not usually get the impression that the landscape was right there within the rectangular frame. Throughout the history of painting, however, there have been those who have gone for a higher level of realism, and paradoxically, a higher degree of deception, fooling the eye into thinking that what is painted is what is real. In _A Trick of the Eye: Trompe l'Oeil Masterpieces_ (Prestel), Eckhard Hollmann and Jürgen Tesch have collected fifty paintings (and sculptures) that demonstrate tricky artistry. It is a large format book, with twenty-four small reproductions to illustrate a useful essay on the history and range of the subject, and seventy pages of large reproductions of specific works with commentary. The covers of the book are particularly attractive. The front is entirely taken up with "Escape from Criticism," an 1874 painting of a picture in a frame; the frame is exactly the size of the book, and emerging from it is a boy, with a surprised look as if he is coming to life out of his oil painting. The back of the book is "Reversed Painting" of 1670, showing the wooden frame of a canvas, with tacks and even an auction number on it. My wife had already seen the book, but last night it was sitting on a table with the back up, and she was surprised to see that it was a book face down, not a painting face down. While I was writing this review, a friend came in and saw a lizard in the corner of an otherwise blank page, and was startled until she realized it was only printed there, a reproduction of a detail of an oil painting of 1660. Trompe l'oeil works.

The tradition of trompe l'oeil goes back at least to ancient Greece. Hollmann and Tesch start their essay by retelling the legend of the painting competition between Zeuxis and Parrhasios. The judges were impressed that the grapes painted by Zeuxis were so real that birds flew down to peck at them. However, they found that Parrhasios had draped his entry in a curtain; when Zeuxis attempted to pull the curtain back, he only got fresh paint on his fingers. Guess who won the competition. Some of the paintings reproduced here have the same trick. "Still Life with Flowers" of 1658 is actually the work of two different artists, one an expert in painting flowers and the other an expert in painting fabric. There is a painting of an array of flowers in the main body of the painting, but there is also a painted rod at the top (held by painted hooks) from which a painted curtain is suspended, having been pulled to the right to reveal the "real" painting of the flowers. Frequent here are pictures of quodlibets; a quodlibet is like a bulletin board, upon which familiar objects are tacked or suspended on ribbons. Reproduced here is "Quodlibet" of 1666 by Samuel Van Hoogstraten, showing a chain, medallion, comb, feather, scissors and more, in an orderly jumble. Murals are included on many pages here. A real shocker is the side of a bank in Columbia, South Carolina, which has been painted so as to dissolve the solidity of the wall (would this decrease patrons' trust in the bank?) into a roadway tunnel; the painting is called "Tunnel Vision", and it looks as if you could just drive into the tunnel and into the sunset beyond.

There are pictures here of the works of Duane Hansen, who for decades has been making polyester resin casts of frumpy human beings; his "Security Guard" (1990) is sometimes asked for directions. There are Warhol Brillo boxes that look like, well, Brillo boxes. And the final photo in this delightful book shows a three-dimensional, life sized Superman sitting on a Brillo box and posed within the gallery in just the posture of Rodin's "The Thinker". It looks entirely convincing, and indeed, it is an actual person sitting motionless, as part of an exhibition "The Living Museum". As in so many of these puzzling works, one is struck with the question, not "What is art?" but rather, "What is reality?"

I buy art books to actually SEE the artworks that I will
never have a chance to view in person.
Which means thumbnail images in a full size coffetable book
really just don't cut it.
The cover art is great and at least half of the images are
of a size that you can actually appreciate the detail.
Too many thumbnails tho and I did expect better.

5 out of 5 stars It's all in the way you look at it........2007-08-05

I don't know how long these stereograms have been around ,but their complexity and fascination has really taken off with the application of computers to this art form. As a kid,I was fascinated with the device that sat on a small table at my Grandmothers, which was used to view double picture photograph cards, which appeared in 3-D when looked at through the viewer. It was probably manufactured sometime around 1900 and maybe even earlier. There were photos of WWI and lots of other things that you saw from that time sold as postcards.Later, after WWII, we saw much the same thing sold in huge numbers and found in virtually very home, namely "ViewMaster". Then, in the 50's stereograph technology was employed in motion pictures ,where the audience watched a blurry screen which came to 3D reality by wearing "special" red&Green cardboard glasses. I remember some wild action films where the whole audience was petrified by spears coming straight at them. Then there were birds and other objects that seemed to come right out of the screen and fly over your head.
For the last 20 years we have seen stereographs in books like this;and getting better all the time.
I have written reviews on several others;but this is the largest one so far, with 200 state- of the-art sterograms. The big advance in recent years is that we can view them without the aid of special devices or viewers...just your own eyes.
I suppose there are a number of categories these images can fall into;but mainly they are the type where the object is quite obvious in 2-dimension and then turns into a 3-Dimensional image. Then there is the other thing where the whole picture is just undiscernable colors and/or patterns, but no obvious imgge. Then ,while staring at the picture an object comes into view almost as a ghost. Some stereographs do both of these things at the same time.
As I went through this collection ,I attempted to pick a favorite;but in the end I wasn't really able to.
The one on pg. 24 ,a simple 2-D transformation is simply in clarity in both dimensions;as the Chicago skyline on pg.167. As for hidden or ghost images;I really liked the Shamrocks on pg 11 and 79.
Then for one which gives no hint whatsoever of any hidden object,I like the Star of David on pg.81 and the Point Burst in pg.26,which is utterly and completely hidden. Then how about the pyramids on pg.103,a little difficult to "get" ,but when you do,well worth the effort.
Then there was the Glad Plaid on pg.25 which I couldn't "get" at all.Then I turned it 180 Degrees,still no luck.Then I turned it 90 Degrees--Bingo!!!
Then I found that many could be seen turning the pages 180 Degrees.Another thing to do is;once you see the 3-D image, and while keeping it in focus, slowly rotate the page and see it disappear.
Overall, the book is loaded with some great images;but I can't but suspect we are still in for some exciting treats in this "electronic"art form in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous! .......2007-07-21

I completely agree with G. Wayne that this book offers "200 of the best full color 3D stereogram images"! Completely amazing! I bought all three "Magic Eye books" plus this one and I'm glad I got it. It beats Magic Eye by FAR and they're not too shabby either! The stereograms are simply fantastic! Very detailed and highly imaginative!

Once you know how "to see" 3D most of them are quite easy. They come quickly but they last long! The only critique I can give is that since the book is fairly large and without a hard cover it's a bit tricky to lay the pages out flat which you want to do. Still it gets full points!!!

I recommend it to both adults and children.

5 out of 5 stars A great autostereogram book.......2007-05-26

Images in this book are comparable to (if not better than) Magic Eye images. I really enjoyed the book.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch.......2006-01-22

Gene Levine and Gary Priester have elevated stereograms to the leval of fine art. Priester's images are elegantly simple 3D stereograms that are easy to view with a border of floating objects that often represent the hidden object. Levine is the stereogram grand master. Gene painstakingly constructs images that are often so complex and wonderful you could spend days looking at just one image and stil miss the subtle detail.

This large coffee size book offers 200 of the best full color 3D stereogram images I have seen. In the back is a section of large "reveals", the hidden images.

      Book Description

Faith Crowell, a trompe l'oeil artist, reluctantly puts her well-ordered, uneventful life aside to accept a prestigious commission painting a grand old ballroom on the estate of a legendary and reclusive society hostess. She expects only money and perhaps a little glamour, but what she discovers is terrifying. The ballroom was built for her employer's daughter who was brutally murdered years ago in a crime that was never solved. Faith gradually realizes that her own uncanny resemblance to the dead girl has more to do with her job than she ever could have imagined. This sophisticated, hugely entertaining nail-biter was nominated for both an Edgar Allan Poe Award and the Hammett Prize for Best First Novel of the Year when it was published in 1992. Now in print again, Trick of the Eye will fascinate suspense readers as well as Ms. Hitchcock's many fans.

      1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing..........2007-03-21

Because I loved Social Crimes, I purchased this book and was looking forward to an excellent tale. Oh my! How disappointing. I figured out it was a "first book" right away, but even allowing for that, the dialogue was stilted, the characters were poorly developed, and the ending was awful. The unfortunate result was a terrible waste of paper which should have remained in the hard drive and spared all of us Jane Stanton Hitchcock fans! Thankfully, she improved immensely as a writer and I whole-heartedly recommend her subsequent books. Save your money and purchase one of those!

4 out of 5 stars Jane Stanton Hitchcock fan!!.......2007-02-10

I bought this book because I loved Social Crimes so much. In fact that is my ultimate favorite book, and I've been reading since I was literally 4 years old. I also recommend One Dangerous Lady by the way. :) Anyway Trick of the Eye is a great book because nothing is predictable. I think Jane Stanton Hitchcock does a great job putting the reader in the shoes of the character. Some quality about her writing makes you feel that you are going through and feeling everything her character is. This book is not as good as Social Crimes or One Dangerous Lady, but I still highly recommend it. Worthwhile book!!

      4 out of 5 stars A Page Turning Mystery..........2007-01-08

I have to preface this 4-star review by saying two things. First, I would really give this book about 3.5 stars, were that an option. Second, if I hadn't read Hitchcock's Social Crimes before reading this book, I probably would have given it an even higher rating. Social Crimes was just such an amazing book that it made Trick of the Eye pale in comparison.

Trick of the Eye follows trompe l'oeil artist Faith Crowell as she embarks on the biggest assignment of her life: painting the interior of the ballroom that was built for the cotillion of a wealthy socialite's daughter Cassandra twenty years prior. Cassandra was murdered shortly after, and the murder remains unsolved.

Without giving away the plot, what was great about this novel was that the ever-changing personality of Frances, the wealthy socialite, and Faith's constant attempts to figure out what she was really supposed to do, kept the plot moving. It was definitely a page turner, with a lot of twists and surprises (especially the end) along the way.

However, Faith's character left a bit to be desired. She seemed almost passive-aggressive to me. At times she just longed to please, at others she was distant and remote. Sometimes her actions didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Overall, a great, page-turning read. If you haven't read any Jane Stanton Hitchcock before, I'd recommend starting with this one -- her first novel -- because it only gets better after this.

5 out of 5 stars Don't believe all you see.......2006-10-23

This thriller held my attention, because there are so many twists and turns in it that occasionally, if your mind strays, you lose complete track of what's happening. There's a mystery of sorts to solve, and a plucky heroine who sets out to do just that. The characters are fully realized, but the reader doesn't know which ones are actually who or what they appear to be. I found the book quite satisfying, and the twist at the end came as somewhat of a shock. I recommend this book for good relaxing reading, but stay alert!

5 out of 5 stars A Literary "Trick of the Eye".......2006-08-18

'Trick of the Eye' is a truly compelling book. It kept me up until 2am on a week night (I overslept and was late for work the next day!) so I could finish it and find out what would happen to its protagonist, Faith Crowell, and what secrets she would discover about her patron Frances Holt Griffin.

I happened to read 'Trick of the Eye' because I recently saw again the movie that was made out of it some years ago. Meg Tilly played the role of Faith and Ellen Burstyn played that of Frances. I've always found Meg Tilly fascinating (a combination of beauty, sexiness, sweetness, and mystery that is all-too-rare in Hollywood these days; the fact that she only made one more film after this before retiring is a great pity).

Anyway, I noticed that the movie was based on a novel, and I decided to read it. I thought that as a guy, I might find it to be too much an example of "chick lit." But it wasn't. It was an engrossing tale of psychological suspense, obsession, and art. It kept me guessing about the outcome to the very end. It is also a much better book than the movie, which benefited greatly from Tilly and Burstyn's performances but suffered from the plot being severely abridged).

'Trick of the Eye' is beautifully written in simple, clear, and evocative prose that sets mood and tone perfectly. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I think Faith is a sympathetic character. I also think that the charges of it not being realistic are specious. Is it unlikely that something like the story might unfold in real life? Yes, but sometimes fact is stranger than fiction (and one can only wonder if the author drew on experiences of her own or those of close friends to create the plot). And the story certainly does not suffer from the clich6s and stale chestnuts that mar most suspense fiction produced these days.

The narrative follows a "twisty" path where the reader is led to believe a succession of different answers to the riddle that Faith tries to unravel: who killed Cassandra Griffin, Frances' daughter, so long ago. Some readers might not like the final twist to the story that comes at the very end of the book, labeling it a cheat. But I did like it, and I think that was because I remembered the title 'Trick of the Eye' (which is the English translation of "trompe 'oeil," a style of painting that deceives the viewer into viewing something as real that is not). So I would say read the book, and remember as you approach the end that 'Trick of the Eye' is a literary version of a trompe l'oeil. Besides, as a reader, you're free to make your own conclusions about what the ending really meant, and I've decided that the final "trick" did not mean that all that preceded it was illusion.

Still can't figure out the difference between "between" and "among," or "farther" and "further?" Or are you dealing with writers who don't know the difference (and won't admit it)? In the land of publications, the man with the red pen is king, but only if the man knows subject/verb agreement, and how to respect writers. Don't like the sexist "the man"? The subject of sexist and non-sexist language gets the full treatment along with other vexing grammar matters in Stet Again, the "Best Of" compilation of Editorial Eye Magazine.

Whether you're a writer, editor, or even a SME (that's subject matter expert), Stet Again deserves a place on your bookshelf with Strunk and White's Elements of Style, On Writing by William Zinsser, The Chicago Manual of Style, and your company's own style guide. Think you don't need to know good grammar or style or layout with desktop publishing and spell check? Stet Again is the cure for editorial (and writer) arrogance. Illustrators, graphic designers, writers and editors can all learn to play nicely if some Good Samaritan provides each of them with a copy of Stet Again. All personnel involved in creating professional publications can recognize familiar conundrums in the many questions Editorial Eye staff members have answered over the years.

          Book Description

Step into the color zone...where cool effects are the rule and nothing is what it first appears to be. Colors can always fool you—making objects seem larger, smaller, faster, or even better looking than they really are. And, when they interact with a range of very special forms and shapes, the optical magic becomes more powerful still. Just try one out and see if you can tell what’s going on.

5 out of 5 stars A book you will geniunely enjoy.......2003-01-14

I noticed that a previous reviewer gives Colorful Illusions as a frequent gift. I do too! The book is a skillful blend of art book, puzzle book, gift book and educational book (but don't tell my children!). We learned a little about how colors can trick your eyes and we enjoy going back and forth over the puzzles. Very artistic, not at all your usual black and white slap-dash illusion book. It is really a book of art. I was also attracted to the easy-to-follow writing, I think Aki Nurosi is a genuine talent and my family looks forward to more books.

My teacher had us read ColorfulIllusions for an assignment and we didn't know what to think until we started reading it. The book is really pretty and really fun to use and figure out the puzzles and it's just so plain and simple and nice to read. You should read the book and try the puzzles and buy it on Amazon. com and you will see what I mean!

            Book Description

Each of these optical illusions is a masterpiece of colorful design, with visual tricks to confound the mind and please the eye. Just don’t trust anything you see at first glance, because it’s impossible to judge spatial relations, or even the subject of a picture, accurately. In some cases, the colors themselves deceive the eye, making objects seem larger, smaller, faster, or even better looking than they really are. Hold onto your hats—two fancy stovepipe hats, that is: are they taller than they are wide, wider than they are tall, or the same dimensions? Or try climbing the wild set of stairs: they’ll have you going in circles and in squares. There’s plenty of beautifully intriguing fun on these pages.
