Book Description
There had never been art like the art produced by women artists in the 1970s--and there has never been a book with the ambition and scope of this one about that groundbreaking era. WACK! documents and illustrates the impact of the feminist revolution on art made between 1965 and 1980, featuring pioneering and influential works by artists who came of age during that period--Chantal Akerman, Lynda Benglis, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Valie Export, Mary Heilmann, Sanja Ivekovič, Ana Mendieta, Annette Messager, and others--as well as important works made in those years by artists whose whose careers were already well established, including Louise Bourgeois, Judy Chicago, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, Lucy Lippard, Alice Neel, and Yoko Ono.
The art surveyed in WACK! includes work by more than 120 artists, in all media--from painting and sculpture to photography, film, installation, and video--arranged not by chronology but by theme: Abstraction, "Autophotography," Body as Medium, Family Stories, Gender Performance, Knowledge as Power, Making Art History, and others. WACK!, which accompanies the first international museum exhibition to showcase feminist art from this revolutionary era, contains more than 400 color images. Highlights include the figurative paintings of Joan Semmel; the performance and film collaborations of Sally Potter and Rose English; the untitled film stills of Cindy Sherman; and the large-scale, craft-based sculptures of Magdalena Abakanowicz.
Written entries on each artist offer key biographical and descriptive information and accompanying essays by leading critics, art historians, and scholars offer new perspectives on feminist art practice. The topics--including the relationship between American and European feminism, feminism and New York abstraction, and mapping a global feminism--provide a broad social context for the artworks themselves. WACK! is both a definitive visual record and a long-awaited history of one of the most important artistic movements of the twentieth century.

Basic.......2004-11-04
The projects in this book are more basic than in other books I've seen. There aren't any unique or remarkable designs and those that were interesting, I have seen done much better in other books. Also, I'm the type of person who likes to look at a project, figure out how to do each step, and do it my own way(feels more fulfilling at the end when you do succeed!). Hence, I found that this book was much too hand-held and at times the steps were so minutely set out, that I lost track of the 'bigger picture'. However, I would highly recommend this book to beginners.
The essential guide works.......2002-11-08
This book is really good to follow instructions and to figure out what supplies you will need and shows you how to create something but giving you basic instructions which are good. It's isn't too wordy and you can follow unlike other books I've purchased. If you are a beginner you will enjoy looking through the pages and creating projects.
Nice with great directions.......2002-07-02
This books is full of visuak instructions that show each and every step for each type of book covered. There are some very interesting styles in here that are possible for any level of bookmaking.
the very best I have found.......2002-03-16
I have a few other books on this subject, but this by far is the most thorough and in-depth one. The pictures are amazing - step by step. I recomed it highly for beginers and even experienced users.
There are some unique ideas in it! I can't say enough...BUY THIS BOOK!
Seductive!.......2001-10-24
This book makes even a defiantly non-crafty person like me want to plunge right in. I love books and intriguing treatments. This book offers the support needed to turn wishes into finished projects. The range of possibilities covered is broad enough to appeal to many different tastes. The Jacob's Ladder book is lots of fun, as the star book. The accordion album is a very attractive and manageable project and one of the most useful. This book covers basics like pamphlet binding, portfolios and slipcases. The instructions are clearly written and are supported by excellent photographs that really make it easy to understand what's supposed to be happening. And the Gallery of Ideas -- photos and descriptions of additional, more elaborate variations of each project -- get your mind cranking with the possibilities. Yummy. An excellent book -- not just for the bookmaking crowd, but useful for teachers also. This summer, my daughter attended a camp where they wrote poetry in the afternoon and learned bookmaking (much of it based on this book) in the afternoons, and the kids loved it.

Book Description
Is it possible to grow up while getting younger?
Welcome to Elsewhere. It is warm, with a breeze, and the beaches are marvelous. It’s quiet and peaceful. You can’t get sick or any older. Curious to see new paintings by Picasso? Swing by one of Elsewhere’s museums. Need to talk to someone about your problems? Stop by Marilyn Monroe’s psychiatric practice.
Elsewhere is where fifteen-year-old Liz Hall ends up, after she has died. It is a place so like Earth, yet completely different. Here Liz will age backward from the day of her death until she becomes a baby again and returns to Earth. But Liz wants to turn sixteen, not fourteen again. She wants to get her driver’s license. She wants to graduate from high school and go to college. And now that she’s dead, Liz is being forced to live a life she doesn’t want with a grandmother she has only just met. And it is not going well. How can Liz let go of the only life she has ever known and embrace a new one? Is it possible that a life lived in reverse is no different from a life lived forward? This moving, often funny book about grief, death, and loss will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.
Customer Reviews:
"Elsewhere" takes you on a magical journey...elsewhere!.......2007-09-23
Everyone asks the question, "what happens when people die?" Elsewhere, by Gabrielle Zevin will make you think twice on this subject. Reading this book was very addicting, and I nearly cried when I turned to the last page because I never wanted the story to end!
The author paints vivid pictures to help the reader feel like a part of the story. By using strong, descriptive words, I was allowed to imagine myself in Liz's shoes. For example, this was proven when Liz, who was killed in a bicycle accident, first goes to Elsewhere, the afterlife and watches her family from Observation Deck, or O.D., through binoculars because she misses them.
I noticed that the author likes to describe people surrounding the main character. I believe that the author does this so the readers can connect themselves with the characters in the book. The first time I read Elsewhere, I thought the author did this just to help readers "get to know characters", not connecting with them. The second time I read this, I realized that she actually connects with the characters by not only limiting the point of view for Liz only, but she shows her other friends' perspective, too.
One of the themes in Elsewhere is death. When Liz died, she's transported to Elsewhere and eventually learns to deal with the fact she died, and may never see her loved ones again. Liz realizes how she is an angel watching over Earth when she frequently goes to the O.D. I figured that Liz thought death is like a new beginning because she has a backwards life in Elsewhere. Her time there is like a human life on Earth, except she ages backwards, and Liz discovers that "a life lived forward isn't too much different from a life lived in reverse."
This book is hard to put down because of the brilliant descriptions, interesting themes, and makes you think about death and the afterlife. Elsewhere has something for everyone: some fiction, non-fiction, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction, this book has all. This is a beautiful book, woven and crafted straight from the heart. I now hope that the spiritual world is like Elsewhere, because someone I knew had recently moved on, and it is believed "she is O.K. in heaven." The idea of Elsewhere is a source of comfort for me whenever I am upset about her death. I hope that she's living her death like the one Liz does in Elsewhere, so she will be watching us from some kind of O.D., and knowing that we miss her a lot. The author takes a normally depressing subject, and turns it in to a hopeful book on this fifteen-year-old girl, which is hardly sad at all! If you enjoy any type of story, be sure to read this ten-star book!

Best quick read that leaves you wanting more.......2007-09-17
After reading a few reviews on Amazon I decided to purchase this book. I am so glad I did. I read this in one sitting and could not stop thinking about it after I finished. I went to bed and dreamed about it!
Zevin takes this life after death subject and presents in such a way that you can't help but want to discuss it with others. You begin to think about all the possibilities of what really does happen after death.
I laughed, I cried. I was moved. READ THIS BOOK TODAY!
Your Attention May Drift Elsewhere.......2007-09-08
This YA title will probably earn 5 stars from girls, especially girls with Lurlene McDaniels-type affinities for the topic of death, because this novel is all about the living end (read: "the afterlife"). In truth, the whole concept of death being life in a mirror world is great, and ELSEWHERE kind of, sort of had me hooked at the get-go, but then it LET go as the chapters wore on.
Don't get me wrong. Author Gabrielle Zevin gets "A" for effort. Her earnest protagonist, Liz, is a likable 15-year-old who gets killed by a hit-and-run taxi cab driver. She "wakes up" on a cruiser heading for an alternate world that looks suspiciously like our world except you can't die there (because you already are) and the dogs talk (more than just "woof," I mean). Lizzie is upset because she missed the prom, misses her best friend Zooey, loves her mom, dad, and brother Alvy, and will never a.) get her Massachusetts driving license (a.k.a. "License To Kill," if you know anything about Massachusetts), b.) lose her virginity, and c.) grow big boobs (you know, all the real important stuff in life).
The catch about Elsewhere is that everyone ages backwards until, on their birthday, they are sent down a river to be reborn as another baby on Earth. The Buddhists are clapping, and it sure beats Hell (with all that smell of smoke), Heaven (with all those harps and angel feathers), or Nothing (with all that depressing "nothingness"), but still, it's a bit too sweet to swallow.
The side characters include Lizzie's grandmother Betty, who takes her in, a girl named Thandi who was shot in the head the same day Lizzie was hit, a drug-overdosed rock star named Curtis "Surely You" Jest, and a love interest named Owen who died at 26 but has "backed in" to being just two years Lizzie's senior. Oh. And the bad news is, all these living dead folk in Elsewhere can pump "eternims" (coinage of the realm) in a binocular-type set up to watch us living alive folk do things like wash dishes, scratch our elbows, and use the bathroom. (Yeesh.)
Not a lot happens in this book, and the large amount of dialogue and short, simple sentences begin to take their toll after awhile. Throw in a few unrealistic plot turns plus characters acting like you wouldn't expect them to act, and you see why some readers' attention might drift elsewhere. Nevertheless, the book's a gamer, quite unique, and recommended for girls of a sentimental drift. Otherwise, my advice is to look both ways before crossing the street...
Great Concept, Poor Execution.......2007-08-25
I began reading this book with high hopes because of the back cover. However, the more I began to read, the more ANNOYING the way it was written got to me. There were many many times when I wanted to rewrite the parts for the author for the sake of the book's moment. I have never even thought that a book might not be worth the money but this one certainly was not worth my money. I think I just might return it. It's in well enough condition seeing as how little it took me to read it. I loved the dogs, though. Aldous Ghent was also quite hilarious. I give this book two starts, though because I do believe it had some good moments. Overall, I give it a huge PUHLEASE and I WISH I LIKED YOU MORE.
Customer Reviews:
He And I is not a "book"........2007-08-29
It is a conversation between a French woman (Gabrielle Bossis, 1874-1950), and her great Friend, her abiding Voice, her Loving Savior, Christ.
Playwright, dramatist and actress by profession, Gabrielle writes under invitation. He And i begins in 1936, while she is on a French passenger liner to Canada, where she will do a tour of her plays.
Every subsequent reader who "meets" this "book" is ALSO invited . . to REPLACE "Gabrielle Bossis", with their OWN name . . THEIR own life. That very same tender Voice now speaks to each reader, wants to coach each life, dispose every life-style - MINE,YOURS - into "THE JOY OF BEGINNING AGAIN", daily, coaching us into Heaven . . begun in Faith . . here and now . . on earth . .within time and, ultimately, beyond time into Eternity . . where, face to Face, we, His family of intimate friends, will be . . FOREVER! . . WITH HIM !
This volume is for lovers! Let us not fear to BE Loved . . . NOR to return OUR love!
To Gabrielle, to each reader, He pleads, "Ask that through this little book I may come as I once came, healing, drawing people to Me. What a triumphal entry into the silence of hearts!"
And indeed, how DEADLY silent our hearts are made by all the "appealing" but appalling and conflicting voices around!
But let us not allow that word "triumphal" to frighten us! . . because, in reality, it is "the abyss of Merciful Love" FILLING "the abyss of our nothingness" (Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity, OCD, "Heaven In Faith", ICS publications). . . entering with incomprehensible Love.
A POSTSCRIPT (Sept.9/07): Everything Benedict XVI focusses on in his homily (cf.Google/"ZENIT") at St.Stephen's Cathedral (Vienna) during his papal visit to Austria, i.e. the necessity of "Giving Sunday back to one's soul, and one's soul back to Sunday", confirms the message of He And i! The "Loving-kindness" one receives from the Lord by honoring His Day -Sunday- is the same, IS the "tender Voice", which the reader experiences on each page of He And i.
Each of these reviews, and together, eloquently intone the praises proper to that "tender Voice" -"Oh!Ancient Beauty"- first made into a prayer by St. Augustine.
The Divine Mercy forsees the most intimate needs of our souls way before the situations and conditions "arrive"!
By scheduling time for a reading of He And i "between Sundays" we extend and implant the JOY of Sunday into the nitty-gritty of EVERY day.
Thanks be to God! Truly, "Alleluiah!" (Joy!)! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit!
He & I has been my life saver/Savior for more than a decade!.......2007-07-13
He & I has for more than a decade brought wave upon wave of consolation and hope to the shores of my soul. Our Lord truly speaks through this little book and has me returning to it again and again more than any other spritual book I've ever read. My copy is both worn and dog-eared and with little notes I penciled in when it seemed as if He anticipated my very thoughts before turning the page! This book is no small miracle for you will feel as if you are in direct conversation with Our Lord, with His very breath exhaled on every page...
The ultimate Spiritual reference.......2007-07-13
It is hard to find a Book that could be described as the Ultimate Truth - APART FROM THE BIBLE - THIS I AM CONVINCED IS AN EXTENSION OF GOD'S WORD TO A SUFFERING WORLD. This is a remarkable, even stunning diary of a French Woman who faithfully wrote down convesations she experienced The Lord had with her from 1936 to 1950 - the dialogue is so different and compelling, even more so than with Theresa of Avila, that the book elicits responses that no other I have ever read has done. One is left with the conviction that she did in fact communicate simply with Her Great Friend in this manner and that you can too - I have in fact experienced similar " understandings " after humbly reading and believing the life-changing transcripts - THERE IS NO OTHER BOOK THAT IS LIKE THIS apart from the New Testament.
the most astonishing book that I want to recomend to spiritual seeker........2006-12-15
It is the most astonishing book that I want to recomend for all spiritual seeker.
" I am in everything and I am all love. Let your life be one perpetual feast... the feast of love of god. Get out of yourself and let your soul be lost in my love...." says the voice
This book made my life feast of love . It is about conversation with god and dialog of love.
Never seen anything like this before.......2006-01-21
I found this book in the chapel of my church, and started reading it. I read it everyday after the mass; within a few months, I had begun attempts to reorganize the priorities of my life: it was first work, then God, and then people; now I want it to be first God, then people, and then work. Read this book and let it carry you away.

Customer Reviews:
Must own for Secret Invasion!.......2007-10-13
This book is the fantastic beginning to what will become Secret Invasion!
Nick Fury assembles a team that consists of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Daredevil, Black Widow, and new character Daisy. Their mission: to blow up the Latverian embassy. Dr. Doom no longer runs it, it's run by Lucia Von Bardas. They go in, blow it up, and Fury mindwipes the heroes.
One year later, the heroes are attakced by tons of tech heavy villains. Why? Retalliation. Lucia never died, so she plans on killing all the heroes and taking over. They take her out.
But WHY?!? Why is the question?!?! Fury can't tell anyone. He doesn't tell. And that's the brilliance that is in this book. He doesn't tell.
What are we fighting for? The answer to that, I'm sure lies in the upcoming "Secret Invasion" which is about a skrull invasion.
But this "Secret War" contains some majorly kickass fighting which is the perfect setup for Secret Invasion. 'Nuff Said!
Classic Marvel.......2007-08-05
This felt like an old school Marvel comic with a modern edge. I liked it a great deal.
A Good Premise.......2007-04-13
What could have been a great story, superheroes going undercover in a foreign land, ends up being poorly executed. The painted art is often dark and difficult to follow. The story is muddled by a non-linear narrative which doesn't flow through past to present, and requires a new character to come in and explain the whole plot to the characters and the readers. Not the worst thing I've ever read, but I couldn't recommend it, either. Go get David Mazzechelli's and Paul Aster's City of Glass, instead.
Not worth it.......2007-03-19
This book reprints the SECRET WAR 5 issue mini-series and the SECRET WAR: FROM THE FILES OF NICK FURY one shot. The story by Bendis is disappointing, particularly how the ending transpires. The (painted) art is by Gabriele Dell'Otto, which at the time the mini-series was being published was being hyped by Marvel as the next Alex Ross (that prediction didn't come to pass). While the art wasn't bad, it did not possess the take-your-breath-away impact the Alex Ross' work does. It also was an odd pairing with Bendis, whose work is more light-hearted in tone (Spidey has some one-liners in this book) while the painted art conveys a dark and moody tone.
What really is the downfall of this book is that HALF of this book is made up of chat logs, dossiers, etc. Again, HALF OF THE BOOK (I counted the pages - the story was 128 pages). While they do add to the story, this takes away from the enjoyment experience of the book immensely. A few pages I would understand, but when you cannot proceed to the next chapter of the story due to the voluminous pages of text material (which one cannot ignore if one hasn't read the book before), then it becomes a chore to go through the book.
At this price point, even with the online discounts, it simply is not worth it. Save your money.
Good story idea, poor delivery.......2007-03-09
This graphic novel had the story idea potential to be on par with V for Vendetta, but in the end the plot line was over about halfway through. The rest of the book was marginally interesting, but mostly useless information about the characters. The drawings were excellent though.
Book Description
WARNING: The raw food recipes in this book are so delicious they may change your life!
The phrase 'raw foods' conjures up images of food as punishment—think uncooked carrots and celery, with perhaps a spinach juice cocktail as a chaser. However, uncooked doesn’t have to mean unappetizing, as this combination cookbook and guide to the raw foods lifestyle shows. Gabrielle Chavez explains how to use the wide range of fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables, spices, and seasonings for delicious, healthful—and healing—dishes. Anytime entrees from Stuffed Portabellos with Mushroom Gravy to Thai Hazelnut Pesto are here, along with seasonal treats like Halloween Soup and basics such as Simple Sweet Bread, with ingredients expressed in both metric and American measurements. In addition to current information on raw foods’ nutritional value and success as an alternative for people with food allergies and disorders, The Raw Food Gourmet takes readers on Chavez’s personal journey as she discovers the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this diet.

This book is very good. has a lot of data.
was in great shape, just like new
Raw Food Gourmet: Going Raw for Total Well-Being .......2007-05-13
This is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to learn and begin following a Raw food diet. With easy to make recipes and just enough background on the Raw food, healthy living regime for beginners and long time Raw fooders. I highly recommend this book for every Raw food gourmet library!
Simple and Satisfying.......2006-11-15
This book is filled with numerous recipes that have become staples in my diet. It is a simple book, but it is obvious that the author is sharing tried and true recipes that are both nutritious and delicious. The book contains useful general tips about the raw lifestyle (especially tips for traveling) but the recipes are the real stars. Try the "grawnola" and your breakfast will never be boring again! This is a wonderful book by a sincere and talented author. It's definitely one of the best raw recipe books I've found.
A Great Place to Start.......2006-05-19
This book was a great help as I started out on my raw adventures. It contains a number of easy to follow recipes which have become staples in my diet. My only problem with this book is that the table of contents is not intuitive making it hard to refer back to recipes. You need to remember that the name of that Kale dish you like is "Disappearing Kale" and won't be found in the index under K but D. If the author does a second edition PLEASE make finding recipes easier! Thanks. Note: This book has no pictures (for that try The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon which is excellent). You should also be aware that many of the recipes call for the use of a food dehydrator which is a great machine but not cheap.
"rawsome" book!.......2006-03-25
I like this book a lot, because it's well-written and unpretentious. There isn't any overhyped raw food propaganda or glossy photos of the author-- just recipes, and helpful advice for becoming and staying raw. Possibly the best part is the recipes contain ingredients you can actually pronounce AND find in stores.

Horse lovers Will like this book.......2007-01-16
The pictures are amazing, the stables exotic. This book is different in a sense that it offers horse lovers a chance to see not only beautiful pictures of horses but gorgeous images of breathtaking and pristine stables, many with exquisitte and unique architecture. Information is presented from a unique perspective to those who love the majestic. Good price too ... here at Amazon. I originally saw the book listed for 40 dollars in a catalog and was willing to pay that price, but did an Amazon search and got it for much less.

A great coffee table book for the horse lover in the family. The pictures of these fairy tales stables around the world will make you want to go out an buy a lottery ticket.
Beautiful.......2007-01-04
I had seen a brief write-up in a magazine and searched for the book on Amazon. The photography is absolutely stunning. The different locations featured in the book make it interesting and the stables are all unique. Visitors to our own farm immediately pick-up the book. And, it was a great hit with our Pony Club kids. I would recommend this for anyone who loves horses or has an interest in architechure.
Stable Envy.......2007-01-03
This is a lovely (coffee table style) book with beautiful photography and a description of some of the most "majestic spaces" for horses on the planet. My only complaint -- and it is a major one -- is that the print describing the pictures is so small that I had to use a magnifying glass to read it. I don't understant why such small print was used. It spoiled an otherwise magnificent book.

Lest you think that spirituality is relegated to the higher mind, Sweat Your Prayers is a reminder that our bodies are indeed cradles of the soul. Physical movement can be a potent medium for spiritual awakening, according to Gabrielle Roth, who has dedicated much of her life to teaching and exploring the holy rewards of dance. The soul has five natural rhythms, explains Roth: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. She teaches us how to identify our natural rhythms, but she also encourages us to practice dancing through all five rhythms in order to become more whole, evolved, and complete beings. Roth is also an acclaimed music producer who has released numerous compact discs that work as excellent dance companions to this energizing book.
Book Description
In Sweat Your Prayers, internationally acclaimed movement and theater artist Gabrielle Roth translates to the printed page the insights of her nearly forty years of teaching personal and spiritual development. Her workshops, attended by thousands around the world, teach us to realize our potential for ecstasy as we experience movement and ritual theater techniques. The book is a journey through five universal rhythms-flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. These rhythms can free the body and spirit from ordinary consciousness and catalyze motion deep in the psyche. Each sacred rhythm is a teacher, a gateway to the soul. Flowing holds the feminine mysteries, staccato the masculine. In chaos, the challenge is to integrate these principles into the flow of one's personal energy, to find the magical blend of feminine and masculine energy that makes each person unique. Lyrical is the context of self-realization, the full expression of the soul. And in stillness, the mother of all rhythms, we find the emptiness of the uncluttered mind wherein we contemplate the mystery of it all. Practicing the rhythms frees the body and becomes a way to express the heart and clear the mind. Complete with personal stories and interactive exercises, Sweat Your Prayers reveals an ancient and contemporary method for unleashing a natural sense of movement, resulting in both personal power and presence of the soul.

Amazing.......2005-10-28
This book helped to me recognize that life is a dance to me. It has given me tools to ground this flighty Gemini in a dance. The 5 rhythms are amazing to use dancing to electronic music (especially goa trance!) and recommended for all of us "new school" dancers that listen to electronic music as our way of life.
Wonderful.......2004-04-11
Everything I've ever felt about dance and movement she's put into words. Very clear, organized and insightful.
BOOM!!.......2002-02-15
Every single word is this book is packed w/Boom Bang, it had so much power, I couldn't sleep. This book just totally rocks, every sentence, makes you look @ what keeps you from dancing w/out the criminations or the guilties or your catholic religion. Read it, you'll sweat in your own escatsy fluids. Yeah!!
Dance for the Soul.......2001-12-24
Another artist making a literary crossover is Gabrielle Roth. She is probably best known for Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors, her percussion, rhythmic music group. However, Ms. Roth is more involved with dance as a spiritual map. Ms. Roth has developed a five part rhythmic expression to transform music into dance, dance into emotion and from this emotion to a Spiritual experience.
Her book is a handbook to transform dance into a Spiritual expression. I loved her mix of personal experiences, stories, and humor to teach her five rhythms, what they mean and how to apply them. The path always leads to our own personal spiritual growth. She explores the five rhythms of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. She blends the feminine with the masculine and melds this with trance and dance, lifting it to Spirituality.
The five rhythms dancing can be done with your group, or you can do it alone. You do not have to have lessons, or be expert, or graceful, just willing to let yourself go and explore your sense of rhythm and spirituality.
This is a wonderful instructional book, lots of feeling and sincerity on the part of Ms. Roth. I enjoyed her style of writing and her treatment of the subject shows a true commitment on her part. An excerpt from her opening chapter stuck in my head for a long while: "Energy moves in waves. Waves move in patterns. Patterns move in rhythms. A human being is just that, energy, waves, patterns, rhythms. Nothing more. Nothing less. A dance."
Rhythm and Soul EVERYWHERE.......2001-11-10
"When you finally commit yourself completely to a creative act, knots inside you will loosen." (p. 128)
We can sort spiritual paths and psychological techniques by how the approach the human body. Gabrielle Roth's book serves as a useful adjunct to those paths that honor the body, rather than ignoring or minimizing it. For the atheists and agnostics out there, this book can also be used at a psychological level, and does not necessitate belief in "prayer" as a sacrament. In the book Roth presents five archetypal rhythms that help break some of the self-destructive patterns of Western culture and re-unite the practitioner with his or her spirit.
Roth begins the book with a brief autobiography, which also serves to establish her bona fides for writing a work on the spiritual/psychological use of dance and movement. She challenges the Western dismemberment of flesh from soul, body from spirit, she reclaims the chthonic and carnal. "The soul can only be present when body and spirit are one; it cannot breathe, exist, or move disconnected from the body." (p. 4) This book is her testimony to how we can retrieve our souls through our bodies.
Roth introduces the idea of the dance as a spiritual practice. She gives examples from her own life, challenges a list of excuses (I hate my body ... I'm too old ... I'm too shy). Then she offers "the only dance lesson you'll ever need:" Everybody has to find their own way, in their own time/space constraints to practice. She reminds us that "life is rhythm" and we need only participate in that rhythm consciously to be dancing, to be re-weaving body and soul. She then offers five concepts to help prepare for doing the rhythms: 1) That the goal is to move, to experience, not to complete something; 2) Dance happens in space, between things, between people, between worlds; 3) Awareness is the key element of dance, by paying attention to the body in rhythm, we alter consciousness and manifest our souls; 4) Follow your breath, let your breath move you; 5) Choose music that speaks to you and makes you aware of the five rhythms that make up Roth's "Wave".
She presents the five basic rhythms (flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness) and links them to primal archetypes. She has created glyphs/symbols for these links, and invites the reader to create their own. Each of the five rhythms gets its own chapter, detailing ideas linking the rhythm to archetypes, body, soul, and heart. Roth explains well, providing compelling examples to illustrate her points. Each chapter has exercises ("To Do/Not Do") as well as a list of words that elicit the archetypes for Roth. Poetry and quotations sprinkle through each chapter.
Roth concludes with a chapter called "Waves" where she presents examples of the five rhythms that go beyond dance, examining among others experiences of the subway, relationships, and architecture. Some examples are hers, others come from friends and students. The book provides contact information for the author, as well as video and CD resources.
Roth does an entertaining job of describing a spiritual/psychological physical practice as well as a state of being that has tremendous potential to enhance life. I have worked with her rhythms at times in my life, and found this approach to be empowering. Other times I avoid the movement, the dance-and I'm not certain why. I have found this work quite helpful and recommend it to anybody who feels the need to better connect body and soul.

Gabrielle Alizay makes Feng Shui understandable........2007-07-20
I have really enjoyed reading this book. I have been interested in Feng Shui for years but could never find a book that defined it so well as this one does. She set me straight about the differences in Feng Shui practices and how to use intention along with techniques. Great book with no confusion!

Feng Shui Fantastic.......2007-03-23
Super easy to read! Humorous and fun. Alizay un-mystifies a foreign mystery . One that will help direct our lives onto a better path. Tibetan Black Hat Feng Shui is much less complicated than the Chinese compass version. It is much more forgiving as long your actions are done with intent. This book gives real world examples and understand that we dont live in a perfect world- otherwise there would be no need for Feng Shui anyway. So far i have been very please with the book and the results. If nothing else, it has made me take a closer look at how i am living, my surroundings and what they say about me and why.
Shill Alert.......2007-01-28
As of Jan 2007 all but three reviews of this book were made in November 2005. They read like they were written by the same person to me.
Feng Shui Confusion Cleared.......2006-02-14
I have purchased several books in the pursuit of understanding and applying feng shui to my home. After all, I know that I feel better in rooms that are uncluttered and clean per basic feng shui principles. Therefore I hoped to dig deeper into feng shui applications to discover how to increase the sense of peace and comfort into my home.
This is the book that I needed to make sense of the other books that I own, although this book could just as easily stand on its own. Gabrielle Alizay has a simple, straightforward, and down-to-earth style of writing. She imparts her knowledge in an easily accessible manner and encourages readers to make the art of feng shui "their own." She doesn't bog readers down esoteric mumbo jumbo, but explains how gain positive results by personalizing things within one's own belief system.
Feng shui is not some mysterious religion, but rather a science of symbols and their effect on our subconscious mind. This was the book that cleared the confusion of feng shui and made it easy to understand how to put it into practice. When reading other books on feng shui, I use "Feng Shui for the Rest of Us" as a sort of feng shui encyclopedia or reference guide. But, if I could only keep one book on feng shui, this one would be it.
Feng Shui for me...........2006-01-14
I hardly knew about Feng Shui before I read this book--Plus, I really was not interested--so I guess I was a skeptic. A friend gave me the book for Christmas. And though I still am a skeptic to a degree, Alizay seems to describe Feng Shui in a way that I found surprisingly charming and easy to understand. I have tried a couple of her suggestions and I have been rather amazed. I had results! I am still not a complete convert, but the book is enjoyable to read, well-written, and worth the time investment for anyone to finally "get" a bit of comprehension on what this Feng Shui "frenzy" is all about.
