I ordered this bible as a gift to Soldiers for our Thanksgiving Prayer Breakfast. I know that the Soldiers will enjoy this free gift! To be able to attend a breakfast and walk away with the Word and "The Good Book" is an awesome gift in itself. I have The Soldier's Bible New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs and I love it. I first got one of these when I was in Iraq in 2005 and the one I recently purchased is a replacement. The original got lost.
There are times when it is nice to have a copy of the Bible around and this version of it is specially-designed for the Soldier. This is a good item to get a Soldier deploying overseas as it isn't always the first thing they think of when heading out.
I plan to keep this one for many years to come.

Research indicates that soldiers weren't accepted as members of the early christian churches until near the end of the second century. So in other words while the apostles and their followers were alive, guess what? No G.I. Joes in the churches. They actually took the "turn the other cheek" thing seriously back then for some reason. Silly of them huh?

My husband and I purchased this bible to prepare him for being deployed. It is very compact, yet has a number of great devotionals. We are really happy with this bible.

I pray everyone involved in war reads this book, especially the lines in red, and realizes that warfare brings only deep sin, immorality, unchained lust, injustice, oppression, and eternal and infinite distancing from the God of Love and of Peace whom we find through the blessed word of Jesus Christ.
I pray each soldier reads this book and weeps, and beats his arms into plowshares, to build peace and feed the children instead of slaughtering them and leaving them orphan, maimed. A large number of contemporary photographers have either moved into digital photography exclusively or use both analog and digital media in their work. In either case, there is most likely an archive of slides and negatives which cannot be directly integrated into the new digital workflow, nor can it be archived in a digital format. More and more, photographers are trying to bridge this gap using high-performance film scanners.
How to achieve the best possible digital image from a negative or slide, and how to build a workflow to make this process efficient, repeatable, and reliable, is the subject of this book. The author uses Nikon's filmscanners throughout, but all steps can easily be followed using a different scanner. The most common software tools for scanning (SilverFast, VueScan, NikonScan) are not only covered extensively in the book, but are also provided on a CD along with other useful tools for image editing, as well as numerous sample scans.

This knowlegdgable and articulate assessment of scanning, hardware and software is very targeted for the serious hobbists, diys as well as professional. I found numerous excerpts that matched perfectly with my semi-professional (small and local photo conversion business) level of experience, which added much credibility to the rest of the book. Especially strong, detailed and valuable information was presented on the Nikon Coolscan 5000, which is our scanner. This is the best of my scanner books and it gives us a few more accurate and helpful options in pulling out the best images from our scans. The printed photographs themselves were in such high detail that they clearly illustrated what the author was writing about. These photos coupled with the articulate text make this book a technical show and tell of scanning. I highly recommend this book as a valuable resource to my fellow photo scanners.

For any professional or amateur photo editors out there, one of the trickiest things to do and do well is scan pictures and get the output to look as good as a regular film or digital print. Whether it's scratches, dust, or other artifacts, negatives and slides rarely look perfect and it's no exact science to getting things to look better. Have no fear though, there is a book for YOU! 'Scanning Negatives and Slides: Digitizing Your Photographic Archives' by Sascha Steinhoff takes this subject matter and lifts the hood up to get into the nuts and bolts of how to create fantastic digital results with little effort. Packed with 200+ pages of material spread out over 15 chapters, the author talks about the basics of how to choose equipment to digital editing techniques to storing and backing up your images to learning about the different tools out on the market for manipulation to... well let's just say there is a lot of meat contained within these pages!
rocknook really has taken the editing and multimedia publishing world by storm, putting out solid, colorful, and well edited books. This title is no exception and it is easy to recommend. If you work with negative and/or slides, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book and learn the art of producing a better end result.

A massive book that truly has everything you'd need to complete any project. My son has a new laptop with Vista- all other guides were not compatable with the new powerpoint program. This is a wealth of info from adding video to the disk included with backgrounds to help. We were very pleased with this purchase :)

My husband and I presented this Bible to our son as a gift prior to entering boot camp. The Marine Corps is very particular about what a recruit can bring with him/her when they enter boot camp. One of the very few things they are allowed to bring is a personal Bible, and then, only if it is small enough to fit in the recruit's pocket. We were very happy to know that this Bible met the requirements and he was allowed to bring it with him. On top of that, it was a very handsome book with the USMC seal embossed in gold on the front. We were very, very pleased with it.

This is NOT a beginner's book, but provides excellent samples and written examples of very useful slide guitar licks.
Note that this book teaches slide guitar in STANDARD tuning, not in various open tunings like other books. Practically speaking, this method can provide a non-slide guitar player with the ability to add some slide flair to a song withou having to swap guitars.

Great book for playing slide in standard tuning. This book is not easy but the examples sound awesome. You may want to start with a slightly easier book but once you start getting deeper into slide this is the stuff. I particularly like Warren's standard tuning tuning approach to slide playing because I am to lazy to retune and do not want to dedicate a guitar to open tuning. He also states that while standard tuning can be a little more difficult to play slide in it also allows you to do some things that would be very difficult is open tuning. Highly recommended.

I've been playing the electric guitar semi-professionally for over ten years. Looking to differenciate myself from the pack I bought this book without ever previously touching a slide. The book teaches you the fundamental slide licks and principles you'll need to succeed at this difficult technique. Granted the book is focused on southern rock & blues type licks you'll certainly be able to apply what you've learned to nearly any genre. If you want to learn the slide this is a great book...and its cheap!!! Thanks Warren for sharing the knowledge!!!

What a disappointment!.......2007-09-11
This book actually made me angry. I feel the title is misleading to the point of fraud. Not only will you not master slide scanning (or any scanning) with this book, you won't even get to first base. The author natters on and on about everything under the sun remotely connected to scanning but gives next to no information on how to actually scan! Some people are saying that it might be good for beginners, but I really disagree. It's almost completely lacking basic, basic information anybody, especially beginners, would need to get good results. I am in complete agreement with the critical reviews by Mark Zelyony, Bernd Schneitler, and Mick36522. Conversely, I am amazed at some of the laudatory reviews. Whatever you guys are smoking, I want some too!

Excellent text and tons of infromation, too much for the casual user. For someone serious about scanning from film media it's excellent. Someone wanting to scan objects or photos should find another source.
Mastering scanner stuff buying.......2006-10-15
This book should have been called "What can you buy if you are thinking about playing with scanner", and it is good at that. It does not tell you much about scanning, it is more about buying equipment, and possibly software related to scanning. Just think about it: There is a chapter "Where to buy", and a chapter "Buying on ebay". There is no chapter "Do this if you miss shadow detail", though. This book is aimed at a high school student who is doing his/her first steps with a film camera and wants to get those pictures into the computer (is there such a person these days?) The book even mentions cross processing. No, it does not say what should you do if you need to scan a cross-processed film. It just says that you can process your film in the wrong developer and it will affect the image on the film.
I was greatly impressed by the chapter on sending off your slides for scanning. Well you definetly need a book to tell you that you can do that, and it greatly improves your scanning skills
If I had a chance to look at the book at the local store I would not ever buy it. Now it goes back to Amazon.

There is plenty of good information in this book, but none of it was particularly helpful to me.
I agree with the reviewer who said that "there is nothing here for someone seeking information about making scans from difficult transparencies". I've been scanning film off and on for several years. I was expecting/hoping for much more information of that kind of when I bought the book.
Anyone interested in this subject should spend some time looking through this book in a bookstore rather than just buying it online and hoping for the best, to see if it really meets your expectations or needs.

I was disappointed in this book. I have been making my own Christmas cards for 25 years, am always looking for new ideas and I love pop-ups. I felt that the examples were, for the most part, uninspired, too contemporary, and not relevant to the biggest card-giving occasions. The instructions sometimes were too vague to complete the project. I really think the basics taught in Paul Jackson's "The Pop-Up Book" were much better even though he provides no patterns or specific instructions for the awesome examples he shows. I'm glad to see Jackson has put out another book WITH instructions. This book is okay if you want an inexpensive substitute but it really doesn't show the true depth of action cards nor provide any new ideas that impressed me. I want to look at examples and think "Wow! I can do that!".

I have been crafting for about 40 years and felt the instructions for some of the ideas could have been a lot better. The ideas are great. Working through the instructions has often been very frustrating compared to other books I have.

This is one of the first books our little guy, around 6 months old, got interested in. Its combination of colorful pages--extra simple on black backgrounds so they really pop out--and sliding pages made it fascinating for him. Now that he's older, he loves to pull the sliding pages himself. We've moved on to every slide-and-seek book now, but the Colors book is still his favorite. It's basic, sure, but babies love it and I highly recommend it for your littlest little ones.

This is a good book for introducing yourself to slide and techniques. It will show you the standard open tunings and scales as well as a number of songs to put them to use. As with all of the books I have experience with, you'll need to do your homework to take it to the next level. Having a basic understanding of theory and capo use will make this easier.

I wanted to get into slide, so I got this book, along with a couple of others. I found this book to be the best, because it had the most. Besides the alternate tunings, and detailed examples, there are practice tracks to improvise with, and scale: two things that the other slide books didn't have. This is a good primer, with everything you'll need to get started (minus the slide and the actual guitar, of course).

A Nice Attempt.......2006-05-13
Don't let the title of my review mislead you. This is a great reference book to keep on your shelf and look up when you run into a problem. In fact, you'll find many of the same answers in this book if you search for them on Google Groups, not surprising since Swinford is a regular there. What lets the book down is that it provides a scant three pages on problems arising from using PowerPoint with other applications like Word, PDF and Flash. And in my years of using PowerPoint in a real world situation, these annoyances come up more than anything else. I thought I'll be able to work around these issues when I bought this book, but was disappointed. However, maybe your requirements are different, so to be fair enough, this is just my opinion. Overall, this boom is a nice attempt.
Think of solutions rather than focusing on the product and the value of this book increases.......2006-05-02
Two disclosures: (1) I have known the author for several years, both as a colleague and a friend; (2) I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher, O'Reilly.
One of the first things that strikes the eye on cracking open the book is the grey border that occupies the outside third of each page. If you are unfortunate and like me pick a few pages each with an empty border it seems a strange -- even annoying -- design choice. But, flip a few more pages and it quickly becomes apparent that the book uses the border creatively to (1) hold the reader's interest by breaking the monotony of the typical linear flow, and (2) impart interesting tidbits. Several minutes into the book I caught myself, upon turning over a page, checking the borders first!
Swinford also makes interesting use of the archetypical savior of many a computer geek -- the paper clip. Scattered through the book are curious contortions of the paper clip. She also lets the reader know she shares their frustrations with PowerPoint with the judicious use of sketches of a pencil snapped in several pieces.
Lest one think these are but gimmicks to cover a lack of substance, nothing could be further from the truth.
Content wise, I would have expected nothing less from the author and she delivers. The book is well organized with sections dealing with broad roles starting with "Presenting Your Presentation," going through every (well, the vast majority in any case) possible uses one might conceive for PowerPoint and ending with "Printing and Distribution." One could nitpick on whether some of the topics addressed might belong in another section, but it is doubtful that any categorization would satisfy every reader.
Browsing through the book, I found myself nodding to myself at the various "annoyances" she has addressed. Having used PowerPoint from when it was first released by Microsoft, and as one who regularly tests its limits -- I have had my share of...let's call them experiences...with the product. The author succinctly identifies each problem and offers a solution be it using PowerPoint or in conjunction with another program. Swinford's expertise and knowledge of not only the program but more importantly of how to use it productively are apparent in the many solutions she presents.
Something new (and impressive I might add) that I learned about her from the book was her knowledge of how other programs can improve one's productivity with PowerPoint. For example, she notes two programs that can assist one "reapply animations." While other programs do cost money, it is a trade-off all of us make routinely: time vs. money.
She is also not afraid to write "No, it cannot be done in PowerPoint." And, she is right. No program can be everything to everyone. And, to that end, she has done her research. Instead of simply stating "use another program," she suggests one. In fact, on page 179, she lists 15(!) programs under the category of "Other Charting Options" -- together with each program's web site and cost.
Clearly, this is not a book from one learns PowerPoint. It is more like a reference book, one that both the beginner and the experienced are likely to turn to when they encounter problems. The author's writing style makes for easy reading and it would not hurt one to read it page by page. For instance, if one hasn't worked with a particular PowerPoint capability it would be a good idea to go through the related section and educate oneself on what to expect. Essentially, this book is best used as a reference.
And, that leads to the biggest "problem," if we can call it that, with this book. Though, to be fair, it is a problem with all such books. A printed book can never do justice to a reference work. A very useful companion would have been an electronic version of the book, something one can search as needed. Take it a step further, and maybe the author and the publisher will consider a purchaser-only companion website for the book. Take the next logical step, and they can charge a fee for new content added to the website.
Be that as it may, all in all, this is a book that PowerPoint users should have within easy reach.
Required Reading for Students!!.......2006-04-03
This time of year, students all over the United States are working on their final projects. Around here, that means senior presentations, which means PowerPoint.
I'm not at that school full-time any more, but in years past I've seen just about every problem that could crop up related to PowerPoint. I really could have used Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances - especially when I taught PowerPoint, and had students come to me in a panic when the program told them the file on their floppy disk was corrupt. (Page 43 deals with this problem. Wish I had known the solution two years ago!).
PowerPoint has become as important to businesses today as any other program. Presentations are used to pitch new products, ad campaigns, even benefit packages. When it doesn't work right, it can cause serious problems. But with Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances in hand, those problems are no longer fatal.
The book is very well organized; it starts off with problems related to the actual presentation, even possible problems with displays and projectors are discussed. Problems that crop up during the presentation (don't you HATE it when your slides suddenly stop moving forward, or when a graphic that was supposed to show up suddenly doesn't?) are solved right up front, so that you don't have to go digging through the book - a great idea when the CEO is sitting there waiting for you to get on with it.
Many problems that people run into are caused by default settings in PowerPoint. (Maybe that's why they call the "default" - de fault is theirs!). Section 2 covers exactly which default settings you need to change, and why. Section 3 covers editing problems, including complaints about some things that Microsoft needs to add to the program. There are also links to some files from some Microsoft PowerPoint MVPs that are very helpful (including some templates).
Organizational charts can be a pain in PowerPoint, especially if you're trying to add positions. Tips and tricks for doing that, and other things you may need to do to an org chart, are listed in section 5. Importing sound and video is in section 6; I hate it when my sound effects don't play right, and aren't timed right. Unfortunately, synching sound is NOT something the book can help with - "PowerPoint is simply not designed to perfectly synchronize slides and sound."
And that's one thing I love about this book: they aren't afraid to tell you when something just can't be done. Whether it's a feature that Microsoft doesn't have, or something that you just might not WANT to do, you'll find out. And maybe you'll even feel motivated to let the folks out in Redmond know what you wish their product would do for you. Hey, it couldn't hurt!
I'm going to be loaning Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances to the senior project advisor at the school where I used to teach. It will save her a LOT of headaches in the weeks to come. But I want it back after the projects are done, because I can see it saving ME some headaches as well. She can buy her own copy.
The "Real" Help.......2006-03-21
Do you get frustrated working with Microsoft's presentation program, and can't find the answers anywhere? Then you'll love this book. You can't buy this book and expect to learn how to create PowerPoints - this one is to keep on your bookshelf and refer to when you hit a roadblock. And of course, it's so much fun to read even when you are just creating nice presentations - at least you'll know exactly what to do when disaster strikes - and you might be even able to do something about it - after all, prevention is better than cure. Yes, this is first aid for PowerPoint - keep it handy!

I'm spending more time these days giving presentations, and PowerPoint has become a required piece of software. But that doesn't mean life with PowerPoint is smooth. This is a book I plan on putting to really good use... Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford. Right in time for a presentation coming up in June!

As I was going through this book, I kept repeating certain phrases in my mind. One was "so there *is* a way around that?" and the other was "I didn't know you could do that!". Some of the annoyances in this book hadn't yet become that to me because I didn't know it was possible in the first place. Since she covers versions 2000, 2002, and 2003, there's a really good chance that much of this book will apply to you regardless of whether you've upgraded or not (I'm in the 2000 - NOT category). I also realized some of the faux pas I was committing that caused "less than desirable" results. For instance, I can bring down the resolution of my graphics to 72 dpi because projection doesn't gain anything by being higher. No more multi-meg presentations with graphics now... Or how come my text shrinks in the text boxes as I type more and more? I thought it just worked like that. Wrong! It's things like these (and many more) that will make my next presentation preparation go much better than it has in the past.
This is another one of those books that I'd recommend to anyone who has to work with PowerPoint on a regular basis. Life's too short to put up with many of these annoyances, and Swinford can reduce your frustration level by orders of magnitude.
