Dr. Michael Roizen hopes to discover a cure for the common birthday. The author of the bestselling book RealAge and Oprah guru, Roizen translates groundbreaking medical research into a series of calculations and choices that promise to reduce age-linked symptoms and diseases. The RealAge Makeover begins with a self-test of 132 health factor questions that compare your calendar age with your "real age"--based on healthy habits plus heredity, he rounds up the usual suspects (sun exposure, sleep patterns, good fats) as well as the unusual (the kind of chocolate you eat, the number of nagging unfinished tasks, your catsup consumption). Although Roizen flags heredity, he focuses on the three key factors of aging: arteries (heart attack, stroke, memory loss), immune systems (prostate and breast cancer), and environmental stresses (lung cancer, STDs). He offers a sliding scale of difficulty in his "younger every day suggestions." Whether talking about stress, diet, or disease, Roizen offers case examples and subtle and engaging strategies such as describing the role of living beyond your means in aging or the difference between "four-legged" and "no-leg fats." Readers looking for a quick fix will benefit less than those who follow the recommendations that require focus and commitment. As Baby Boomers age and books about turning back time increase, Roizen's will remain a standout. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Why not live at 60 feeling like you did at 35?
Thousands of Americans are younger today than they were five years ago. How is that possible? By following the specific recommendations that reverse aging in Dr. Michael Roizen's bestselling book RealAge®: Are You As Young As You Can Be?, people who were previously much older than their chronological age have now taken up to twentynine years off their biological ages. Since that first publication, more than 10 million people have taken the RealAge® test in one form or another, and thousands of people have thanked Dr. Roizen for helping them make simple changes in their lives -- changes that have made them healthier, younger, and more vibrant.
In the last several years, Dr. Roizen and his team have learned much more about the aging process. The RealAge® Makeover makes sense of recent critical medical findings -- mportant new research on inflammation in your arteries, stress reduction, chronic disease management, hormone replacement therapy, and other choices you can make to keep aging at a distance. You'll also find the latest on vitamins and other supplements, which are age-reducing, which are aging, and which ones to avoid if you are taking certain medications. Roizen then offers more than seventy ways to reduce or even prevent 80 percent of the diseases that make you feel older. For example, coffee or the right kind of chocolate in moderate amounts can help reduce inflammation, preserving your arteries, joints, and memory. But the wrong choice can lead to needless aging and loss of energy, such as taking too much Vitamin A. And The RealAge® Makeover tells you how much (in years) each choice is worth so you can make the choices that are meaningful to you.
More potent than any statistic or finding are the personal stories interwoven throughout -- success stories from readers who followed the RealAge program, became biologically younger, and are living happier, healthier lives. With this book, readers have more opportunity than ever to turn back their biological clock to look, feel, and actually be many years younger.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure.......2007-08-28
And "prevention" (of aging and disease) is the underlying message of this makeover program.
The Dr. Roizen (who partnered with Dr. Oz for the successful "You" series of books) provides easy to follow guidelines for doing the things you know you need to do for better health.
This isn't necessarily a book you'll sit down and read cover to cover. It may work better for you if you turn to the chapter that addresses your most pressing concern (weight, smoking, etc.), and start there.
Because the other underlying message is that you have to start SOMEWHERE to get your health under control.
With this book, the plan is laid out for you in easy to understand language. The implementing may not be quite as easy. That part takes determination.
So if you're determined to do something about your health, you'll find what you need here.
(So why 4 stars, not 5? Because, unlike the "You" books, this one has no "cute" illustrations, and it is dense with text. Something that may be off-putting for readers who like their medicine to go down smoothly, and with a touch of humor.)
The more you know...........2007-07-19
Roizen tells you easy ways to improve your health and well being.
His methods are straight forward and completely obtainable.
The hard part, incorporating these practical and easy steps into the formation of your new habits.
Before you buy this, you probably already know that you need to change your lifestyle and habits. If you have the will power to change, you will love this book. If you don't have the will power, you will need a very wobbly table to level before this book will be useful to you.
RealAge.......2007-05-12
It is OK. Uses the hype: Your younger than you think are, as long as you take care of yourself. Daaaa
More of the same..........2007-05-07
You can find this info on line so I wouldn't spend the money unless you're a real health nut and need to read everything and anything written on aging etc. It's OK but the internet would be faster and just as informative.
The RealAge Makeover.......2007-04-13
Great information. Now, I just need to actually apply this new found knowledge to my life.

Great book..I couldn't stop laughing.......2007-08-19
I love this book. The minute I started reading the book I could not stop laughing. i recommend purchasing this book, give it to your teens (troubled or not) to learn some common sense as they are growing up.
Funny Book.......2007-08-11
Good Advice with a lot of humor sprinkled in. Very good book. Next a cook book I would love to have that Sweet Potato Pie recipe.
Don't Make a Black Woman take her earrings off was excellent.......2007-08-09
This was an excellent audio book. Done in the voice of Madea the hardcover could not have matched it. Some of the language did get a bit much, but the content advice, humor, and reality were both entertaining, informative and inspirational as well as giving some real life reality checks. I hope Tyler Perry continues on.
Another hit!.......2007-07-25
what more can i say! this book had me in stitches! i would bust out laughin and people would look at me like im crazy..but what she says is true for the most part. great book...A++++++++++
Funny, but predictable.......2007-07-17
For those of you unfamiliar with Mabel "Madea" Simmons, this book will have you rolling on the floor laughing, or nodding your head in agreement with some of the sage pearls of wisodm Madea (via Tyler Perry) shares. But for those of us who are die-hard Madea fans, this book is a "burnch" (as Brown would say)of regurgitated lines and material from TP's hit plays and movies. Not that it didn't make me smile; I had plenty of happy moments reading this. But as soon as I read one sentence, I knew exactly what was coming in the next three paragraphs. This book is a great intro to people who have only seen the movie adaptations of TP plays, but for those familiar with the material, try borrowing it from the library.
Incidentally, Tyler Perry's email newsletter states that there is a movie version of "Why Did I Get Married?" coming out starring Janet Jackson and Malik Yoba, as well as a film version of "Meet the Browns" (starring Angela Basset and a rumored-to-be Jennifer Hudson), as well as a sequel series of "Meet the Browns" (a follow-up to "House of Payne"). TP is a busy guy.

Not So Helpful.......2007-07-30
I was really disappointed in this book, but I should not have been. I read all of the reviews and decided to purchase anyway. It seems that the the 5-star ratings are given by credentialed professionals (are they colleges or friends helping another?), while the mothers who truly need strategies to implement at home are not finding this book helpful, and giving the lower-star rating. I fall in the latter category. As the mother of three under the age of 5, I get angry with my children and I truly want to learn how to break this cycle of anger in my family. More "me" time isn't the only answer.
Not helpful.......2007-03-16
I agree with the other reviewer - "not as helpful as I would have liked." Disappointing. Basically, a lot of suggestions when you can hire babysitters often. Also, not practical advice for hectic lives today.
Not Nearly as Helpful as I Would Have Hoped.......2006-08-16
For starters, I was not happy to find on the first page that the author is not even a parent herself, but a part-time caregiver.
That aside, I appreciate that moms (myself included) certainly do need to make time for themselves and let more things go. Unfortunately, this book does not relate really well to a working mother of 2 very small children, who can't just let everything go, and have lots of Mom-time. My kids still need a lot of care at this point, and I prefer to spend most of my non-working time with them. Also, I found the cutesy tone of the book annoying and distracting from the substance and content.
Maybe this book is helpful for parents of older children, but it just doesn't work for me
All mothers need this message........2005-11-08
Kelly Nault's book contains the message that all mothers need to hear, in order to overcome our own upbringing. We were taught that a "good mother" is totally self-sacrificing. That's wrong! Think of what the flight attendant tells you when you board an airplane. "Put your own oxygen mask on first." If you don't, you will be totally unable to help your children.
Kelly also uses her expertise in psychology to provide you with literally dozens of tips on how to be the Ultimate Mom you want to be and bring out the best in your kids. My personal favorites:
How to deal with sibling rivalry
How to have fun and constructive family meetings.
How to create quality time with your kids.
How to take your own "Time Out" when you're stressed.
You don't need to be perfect, but Kelly shows you how to be the best Mom you can be.
Mickey Michaels, B.A., M.A., M.B.A., best-selling author of "SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR PARENTS: How to Avoid Screwing Up Your Kids or Losing Your Own Sanity" and 'SUCCESSFUL DIVORCE & SINGLE PARENTING"
A must read for parents.......2004-12-19
Kelly has written the ultimate book for mothers. As a grandmother who has been using and teaching Adlerian principles of child rearing for over 35 years, I thought I had read and knew everything there is to know on the subject and was not interested in yet another book. But Kelly`s approach is magical. I could not put the book down (even though I was at Disneyland with my grandchildren while reading it). Each chapter introduces an important principle with an innovative twist. Her book is a wonderful reworking and updating of old material, plus new material on self-care. It is upbeat, it is urbane, and it is a must read for parents of today's children. - Clair Hawes, PhD, Registered Psychologist
Book Description
Have you ever fantasized about taking time away from your overworked life? Nights uninterrupted by email? Days to pursue set-aside dreams? Do you promise yourself that “someday” you will get a break?
Mary Lou Quinlan had those “someday” thoughts. But her hard-earned job as CEO of a New York advertising agency claimed most of her waking hours. Exhausted and losing motivation, she was so desperate she perversely imagined breaking her leg to get some time alone. Then, she declared a brief timeout. During her time off, she slept late, took walks, danced the salsa, kept a journal and ultimately, uncovered the roots of a new business. In the process, she rediscovered herself.
Time Off for Good Behavior is the result of listening to women like her, who realized enough was enough. Quinlan tells the stories of dozens of women who sacrificed their health, relationships, their good humor and a good night’s sleep until they found the courage to ask themselves if they were happy with the life they were living and made the decisions to take a life-saving break.
Mary Lou Quinlan explores the factors that compel you to work so hard and examines how to take back control of your life. She explores our unwillingness to give ourselves permission to rest so that we can re-imagine our futures. And she shows the powerful, self-fulfilling changes that can occur when we do decide to take that rest.
Whether you contemplate leaving a career that took years to build or just need a long vacation to assess what you want next, you’ll find practical tools and bolstering advice throughout. Each chapter ends with provocative questions to help you plan your good behavior reprieve. Specific exercises on financial planning, advice for negotiating time off, and tools to uncover your passions make this a must-read for women who are ready for “someday.”
Time off for Good Behavior ultimately shows that stepping away from everything—even for a short while—often means ending up with so much more.

Mary Lou Quinlan Is a Dynamo.......2005-04-19
As a man, I got a lot out of reading Time Off for Good Behavior. Mary Lou showed me how I can get more out of life and work by being smarter, better AND by taking it easy occasionally. I could relate to many of her experiences and I felt I learned from how she coped. Anyone, male or female who wants to have a rich professional and personal life will gain by reading Mary Lou's insights.
A Validating Must-Read!.......2005-03-23
Mary Lou Quinlan really knows what she's talking about. As a thirtysomething single woman, reading "Time Off for Good Behavior" was extremely validating. Her own story and the stories of other women captured in this book are truly rivoting, and made me realize I am not alone. Amazing that the book summarizes how I've felt all of my working life(and even before then). A serious page-turner; you feel like you're having an initimate chat, rather than reading non-fiction.
A Potentially Life Changing Book.......2005-02-28
If you are a hard-charging, hard-working professional woman who takes her laptop to the beach, you will recognize yourself in Time Off for Good Behavior. I could identify with many of the Type A "good girl" women Quinlan describes. She's right on target. She makes you think about your daily life in a whole new way. And, afterall, this is first step in making a change.
Sometimes we need know it's o.k. to cry "uncle.".......2005-02-18
As I was reading this book, I felt like I had met my soul mate. I, too, am a Type-A "good girl." ("You need this report by Friday, would Thursday be better?") Fortunately for me, I was forced into a sabbatical before I really knew that I needed one (and then, of course, spent the next two years struggling with the fact that I had my entire identity wrapped up in my job/career, that only now am I beginning to enjoy life). I was floored when Mary Lou wrote about being so tired that incurring enough injuries to require a stay in the hospital (without being life-threatening) seemed an attractive way to take a break from the craziness. That thought had crossed my mind more times than I would like to admit. If you're thinking about taking time off, or are so tired that you can't even think, then you might want to pick this book up. Even if you can't financially swing a sabbatical, it's helpful to understand that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed with your life.
Balancing Act .......2005-02-16
I recently read Mary Lou Quinlan's book and enjoyed it because at times, Women Can't Do It All! Being a mother, a spouse, taking care of the house and managing a career doesn't always provide women with the time to take a break and consider what we want for ourselves. This Sunday's NYTimes (business section) interview with Mary Lou Quinlan made me realize that this is a much bigger issue.
We need to slow down, take charge of our lives and start
LIVING, rather than racing.

Anybody Can Write a Book...........2007-01-18
Anybody can write a book about anything. That does not make it true. Many authors site patients that they have healed. Those ancedotes are not necessarily true. I have worn glasses since I was 7 and added contacts in my teens. When I got into my early twenties, my prescriptions stablized. I am now in my mid forties. I get my eyes checked every year or two and my presciption is always the same. I like to have an open mind, but I found this mind/body, energy fields, paranormal stuff related to vision hard to believe. I guess the only thing to do is try it. If that is one would like to do, this book seems a good start.
This book is a gift for everone using glasses.......2006-06-10
This book is written from knowledge and experience. Jacob takes the Bates Method, adds plenty of his own experience and explains it in a way that you cannot ignore. The book is full of factual, methods for relearning to see easily and effortlessly without glasses and also deals with the more subtle psychological resistances many of us have towards seeing clearly. Its a great book and written with love. 4 weeks in and my eyesight has improved 6%(from 5.5D with 1D astigmatism to 5.25D with .75D astigmatism. I wear glasses only for the computer and driving now. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to throw away their glasses!
Best yet.......2006-02-27
I almost didn't buy this book based on a review. So I am writing to say that this is the best book on vision I have read yet. Since I must have 10 or 12 such books in my possession, I consider this quite a statement.
Positive experience..........2005-08-06
First off I will simply say that this is, in my experience, an excellent book on the topic of the deeper nature of eye-sight and why (in many cases) it deteriorates.
In order to help you, the reader of this review, gain a little insight into the nature of the main emphasis of this book I wish to share with you a couple of personal experiences.
I was prescribed reading glasses when I was 15. At that time I intuitively felt into "why do people end up with deteriorated eyesight?" -- why is my eye-sight failing?. Intuitively I knew that in most instances it was literally the result of "not wanting to see" something within my world and/or within myself. Within less than six months I no longer needed my glasses and now can't wear them (as they no longer "correct" my vision, but distort it).
About 8 years ago I met a friend of mine when she was 22. She had thick glasses that she had to wear at all times if she was to see much in her world. She'd had them since age 6. They got stronger and stronger every few years. She was convinced (like most people) that this was "normal" and she'd have these for the rest of her life. In talking to her about matters of health and healing, I mentioned that I felt her challenged eye-sight was the result of her not wishing to see something from her childhood. I felt it was related to her father. (Perhaps I qualify that comment by saying that, among other things, I work as an intuitive healer).
She thought this idea to be quite ridiculous. A few days later we went to a 2nd hand book store. I found in there the book I am now reviewing. After flicking through it I quickly recognised that Liberman had very similar views on eyesight to myself. I bought it and gave it to my partner to read. I also read it myself. Within no more than 4 weeks after reading this book she has not worn her glasses since. She had to literally throw them away as they were no longer a suitable prescription. She has been reading, driving, living, etc., without all glasses every since (that was 8 years ago).
I will add that she didn't have to do much in the way of eye exercises. She did learn and practice doing what Liberman calls "Open Focus". This is, however, a good practice for all people -- glasses or not. It simply involves relaxing ones focus so that it is not drilling down onto the object/view at hand, but rather takes in the entire field of ones vision at all times (at least, whilst in open focus,,, which can become an ongoing way of viewing the world).
I am not suggesting that all people who read this book will have the same results as my friend. I am suggesting that it is entirely possible though. The probability of this will, however, depend on you and how ready and willing you are to see the world in a new way. What I do wish to share with you is that what Liberman explores in this book is, in my experience, an accurate view of the metaphysical aspect of eyesight and vision.
For people that rigidly adhere to a purely physical/materialist view of the world they might find this book is not compatible with their world view. If, however, you are open to the time-honoured perspective that there is "far more to life than meets the eye" then this book is written in such a way, and presented in such a way, that I am sure you will find it of great value. Liberman has a great deal of experience in this field... both as a trained optomitrist and as someone that broke away from the conventions of that profession and has since helped many people free themselves from the need to wear glasses.
I give this book my highest recommendation to anyone with poor eye sight, who is genuinely open to and interested in taking on a deeper understanding of the nature human of eye sight, and to then literally "take your glasses off and see". In my experience, this is a fantastic book.
I wish you all the best success in regaining your precious eye-sight.
Jonathan Evatt
A really mixed bag of tricks.......2003-06-01
This is a very interesting book. It shed some light on the limitation of optometry. But, it replaces with a lot of alternative advice that is inaccurate.
First, he comes up with a strange psychological theory that would explain why people's eyesight deteriorated by either becoming myopic or far-sighted. If you became myopic, it is because you became scared of the outside world through a life changing event that you did not cope well. Thus, you are refusing to look at the outside world, because you are afraid of it. If you became presbyopic, you did it because you became angry at the world through another life changing experience you did not digest well. So, you just had it with the world, and you refuse to look at any of its details close at hand. This is all bogus.
The author also did many experiment that I tried to duplicate myself, but never could. He takes a bunch of people who are really myopic and orders them to take off their glasses , and then measures their visual prescription twice within the next 24 hours. I did that, using the testing devise he offers to measure your improvement in vision. Mine did not budge, yours will not either.
In a nutshell, you can't just take off your glasses and see. This is giving you false hope. And, he should be sued for false advertisement.
So, why am I giving it a 3. Well, here are some positive valuable information I got out of it:
1) Be skeptical of your optometrist measurement of your own prescription. It is not as accurate as you think;
2) I have learned to live with "under prescribed" glasses. I now use a prescription that is weaker than one I had 11 years ago. And, I wear these 90% of the time I am wearing glasses;
3) I have learned to actually not wear any glasses when I don't need to. I probably do that 10% to 20%, when I am home eating a meal with my family.
By doing points 2) and 3) as described above, I maintain my vision at its current level, and control the speed at which myopia would accelerate for someone my age. I watch my colleagues at work rushing to get a new prescription every single year or so. And, that is nuts. If we all did that, we would end up with glasses as thick as wine bottle bottoms within 5 years. If you are doing that, stop it right now. This book will give you the confidence to stop this vicious cycle.

How to survive a heart attack.......2007-05-13
While going through cardiac rehab after my heart attack, I picked up this book and began reading it on the treadmill at the hospital. That's how desparate I was! The authors give a thorough review of the current information on cardiac health and how to maintain it. No surprises, just a low-fat, low-salt diet, exercise, reduce stress, and take your meds. They describe all the meds and their purposes.
This is the best book to give to anyone in danger of heart problems. I have given several copies to family members and friends.

This book started it all.......2005-11-27
We attended a one-night seminar put on by one of the authors and immediately began plotting our get-away with the help of the book. While we were on our trip, people all along the way kept asking us the same set of questions about how we escaped. Being retired, we didn't have to get the time off, but there were a myriad of other questions that weren't really addressed elsewhere -- so we wrote the perfect companion book to "Six Months Off" -- we titled it "Live Your Road Trip Dream - Travel for a year for the cost of staying home". If you are serious about doing this -- get both of these books!
But most importantly - go live your dream - life is short, figure out a way and do it now.
guide to turning a crazy dream into a practical reality.......2005-10-11
This is a practical presentation of the logistics of planning a sabbatical from work. It's full of ideas that will make this more realistic- such as arranging for your own temp replacement, arranging a house swap with someone from another part of the country, presenting your sabbatical to your boss as a smart business investment, and getting a "memo of understanding" about the terms of your sabbatical in writing. Furthermore, this book is full of checklists which will help ensure your time off is well-prepared. Especially useful is the chapter on negotiating with your boss. One concern- though the author strongly encourages asking for pay during your sabbatical, I think it's highly unlikely you'll get it in today's marketplace.
My only major criticism is that this book isn't as broad-minded as it could be about the possibilities of what you can do with a sabbatical. For example, the authors claim you'll save money by staying at home, when in fact you can often live much more cheaply abroad. The case studies are much more inspiring, and include examples of families that successfully enrolled their children in schools abroad.
I'm kind of surprised there isn't a new edition of this book. Though the listing of resources are outdated (and predate widespread use of the web), the book's foundations are still relevant.
Prepare For Travel Fever!.......2004-08-10
Six Months Off is an extremely inspiring and informative book. Once you start reading this book, plan on having travel fever! The authors do a great job explaining why you should take a break from your boring, dull, repetitive job and expand your mind and grow as a person by taking time to traveling the world, write a novel, go to cooking school, or attend some other educational program. Not only do the authors convince you to do these things, and list great programs to look into, but they also describe HOW to do it, in realistic terms. The book is full of case study examples of people from various backgrounds and income levels (including very low income levels) who found the ways and means to accomplish a sabbatical and return back to their former lives afterwards (for those who wanted to return anyway). Don't doubt that you can this. The authors show you how step-by-step. The sample programs and opportunities listed in the book can't be overlooked either. Not only am I looking into some of them now, but I also plan to use this book in the future for other great adventure ideas. Live is very short, and this book will help you make the most it.
Gave me courage to ask for a Leave.......2001-01-22
I was impressed. My girlfriend has been trying to get me to get out of the country for an experience that wasn't available here. I was given an opportunity to go on an archaeological dig in Peru and after fighting the negatives of leaving for 3 months, I was given this book and within 24 hours of finishing it I was in my bosses office with my initial proposal to go. It was great. If you want to know how the Leave went...I will let you know in August.
This is one cool book!.......2000-10-02
If polls are to be believed, nearly 70% of people with incomes of $40,000 or more a year (that's tens of millions of people out there) fantasize about taking time off from work (besides the standard 2-week vacation). Well, my wife and I were two of those people just a few years ago, feeling tired and burned out after almost 10 years in our jobs, and just basically in need of a break big-time. Plus, some friends of ours had taken a year off to travel the world, and we thought that would be awesome, since we both loved to travel and wanted to do a lot more of it before we "settled down" or got too much older. But how? I'm not saying it was simple or for everybody, but it CAN be done, and Six Months Off helped show us how.
Actually, my wife and I ended up taking MORE than 6 months off (by 2 months, to be exact). During our time off, we were on "Leave Without Pay" from our jobs, which we negotiated with our employers, but were still covered by health insurance. Mainly, we traveled: around Central and South America, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. We also took immersion Spanish classes and lived with local families in Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, took some time to travel the United States (mainly through Kentucky, Tennessee, and down the Mississippi River to New Orleans). We rented out our condo, put our stuff in storage, called the IRS to find out what we needed to do as far as taxes were concerned, and found someone (my father) to handle our finances/personal affairs while we were gone. In all of this, Six Months Off was a great help in planning, as well as in knowing what to expect in terms of expenses and a million other things, including adjusting back into the "real world" when our sabbatical was over! Budgeting (we didn't go broke) is important, of course, as is health care, insurance, and having a job when you get back (although some decide to just wing it and look for a job after -- or more accurately, IF -- they come back).
Basically, we probably could have figured most of what we needed to do on our own, but Six Months Off (and other resources, like friends) were extremely helpful in making things go more smoothly. Many people dream of taking time off to pursue a dream, but very few actually do it. Six Months Off shows you how you CAN do it, and leads you through it step by step. I strongly recommend this book, and I strongly recommend taking Six Months Off if at all possible! What an amazing experience!
Book Description
The ultimate guide to predicting winners and losers in high technology
Pip Coburn became famous for writing some of the liveliest reports on Wall Street. He quoted everyone from Machiavelli to HAL, Anaïs Nin to Yoda, Einstein to Gandhi. But along with the quirky writing, he consistently delivered sharp insights into technology trends and helped investors pick stocks with long-term potential.
After years of studying countless winners and losers, Coburn has come up with a simple idea that explains why some technologies become huge hits (iPods, DVD players, Netflix), but others never reach more than a tiny audience (Segways, video phones, tablet PCs). He says that people are only willing to change when the pain of their current situation outweighs the perceived pain of trying something new.
In other words, technology demands a change in habits, and that's the leading cause of failure for countless cool inventions. Too many tech companies believe in build it and they will come build something better and people will beat a path to your door. But, as Coburn shows, most potential users are afraid of new technologies, and they need a really great reason to change.
The Change Function is an irreverent look at how this pattern plays out in countless sectors, from computers to cell phones to digital TV recorders. It will be an invaluable book for people who create and invest in new technologies.

The Change Function: Why Some Technologies Take Off and Others Crash and Burn
Interesting theory and well written book. Besides that it's hard to me figure out how to apply it to my business. Evaluations are qualitative and highly dependent of the assessor's knowledge. It requires a detailed guideline to be applicable on a company operation.
Essential requirements for high-tech product success.......2007-03-13
Intel icons Gordon Moore and Andy Grove are each credited with a high-tech development axiom. "Moore's Law" says the cost of putting the maximum number of transistors on an integrated circuit (like a computer chip) doubles every 24 months. This leads to the "price elasticity argument" that infers the ideal price at which consumers will find new high-tech products attractive. "Grove's Law" posits that people adopt new technology when it is "disruptive," that is, when it becomes 10 times better than anything else available. But author Pip Coburn, who writes with a lively pen, believes that high-tech leaders must put these revered principles aside, and focus instead on the people who use their technological marvels. Those who appeal to consumers will thrive. Those who do not will lose money as their products go down in flames. Is Coburn correct? As the founder of a firm that advises investors on high-tech stocks, he makes a compelling argument. We suggest that technology executives, portfolio managers, and anyone else concerned with the success of high-tech companies and their products will want to read this thoughtful book before placing their own bets.
Do I have a "crisis" that gives me greater pain than the TOTAL cost of your solution?.......2007-02-07
On one hand, this book seems to belabor the point that products are only adopted by the market if the user's have a "crisis" that outweighs the costs of acquiring and using the product. On the other hand, anyone in business selling a product should read this book.
The key concept is USER CRISIS. The whole point of the book is this -- if we don't want or need something, it doesn't matter how little it costs and how well it works.
Numerous examples are provided which illustrate that the tech industry's infatuation with Moore's law (cost will decrease and performance will increase steadily until consumers *eventually* will make the purchase) and Grove's law (success can be achieved by creating 10x improvements to technical capabilities) continues to misdirect billions of dollars.
The book illustrates how the tech community continues to believe that any cool technology will be adopted by the masses if it's costs come down enough. In other words, the majority of consumers will purchase ANYTHING if it costs little and does neat things.
Cautionary Tales for High Tech Execs.......2007-01-15
You have passion for your product, your team is energized and your investors are doubling down. Your potential customers are interested -- but they're not buying. Why?
Change is painful. You may see your business in The Change Function's cautionary tales -- if you do, the change may have to come from your side of the equation.
A simple and USEFUL framework.......2006-12-28
The Change Function provides readers with a simple and useful framework to evaluate technologies against user adoption. The historical context, cases and texture provided in the book is great and really adds another dimension to the framework (personal crisis vs. TPPA).
The book is well written, very entertaining and an easy read. As an industry analyst covering emerging enterprise technologies, I found this book to be very useful for my own research and thought processes. I highly recommend it.

TAKE IT OFF is another installment of the INSIDERS series that describes the innermost thoughts of A-List teenage boys. This is a very funny book because the characters seem like what real, rich A-List boys would act like.
In this particular book, the boys crew that consists of Mickey, David, Arno, Patch, and Jonathan take a "cruise" over winter break together that is a program that Patch's parents wanted him to go on. He of course couldn't go without all of his friends. The cruise is supposed to be a learning experience that teaches the students about history, classics, and sailing. They sail from Athens, through the Mediterranean, around the Iberian Peninsula, and on to London. Along the way all of the crew gets "expelled" from the ship except for Patch.
You will have to read the book to find out how, why, and what they do about it!
I really liked this book, because it was funny, easy to read, and super insightful. One of those books that should only be read next to a pool, or on the beach! A super-fun read!

The novel is a great book to read. The novel flows perfectly; there is never a point when the story becomes boring. This is the best teen series that follows life though the eye's of teenage guys. The characters are all unique and accurate represntations of teens today. I would recomend this book to anyone!
One of the best stories i've read!.......2005-08-08
For those who get tired of always seeing bitching stuff and the teenage problems from a girl's view, this is a change and its really addictive! I agree with the gossip girl writer, the only cure is more. I cant put down the book and i'm already craving for the next sequel, which unfortunately will only arrive in november. The story unravels the lives of 5 A list guys, who are almost perfect but are made to face up with the problems in their lives, despite their good looks and credit cards. Its a great teenage series!!!
