4 out of 5 stars Great time reading and laughing.......2007-10-02

Lot of truths mentioned in the book... Wish there were more, especially when it comes to government entities... Just have to be diligent about "practicing" the tips and tricks provided.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-28

This is a great book that has a good level of scholarly support but written in an easy-to-read style that should appeal to most audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Stating The Unspoken.......2007-09-23

Everybody knows the abuse-of-power types that this book outlines. Too often companies/cultures put the onus on victims to adapt, and get-along. What that approach does is allow managers to NOT do their jobs - and that is to confront dysfunctional behaviors clearly and directly.

Dr. Sutton takes a no holds barred approach to defining culture up front. Letting the community know what is and is not acceptable behavior. I wish that he would create a study of companies that are this direct in dealing with behavioral problems, bring the concept along further with specifics of what works and what doesn't.

The "avoidance approach" clearly is not a true solution, but as he states in the book if management will not address the organization's asses, and you want to keep your job, it is the best option sometimes.

A few times in my life I've worked in environments where the assholes have kissed upward so much that they are well connected. And poorly skilled career bureaucrats looking to keep their position, single these emotionally inept people out as stars to be heralded - because heralding a well connected asshole makes you an ally. In each of those situations, I've watched the best people move on, managerial incompetence thrive, motivation deteriorate, and a fairyland scenario of pretending flourish. What a sad state of affairs that leads to.

Bringing the difficult concept of an actual asshole present in the mix, naming what is unspoken, is an essential element in this work. Further development of the idea, refinement of behavioral understanding could only continue to develop greater awareness of truly sly assholes that are skilled to be non-confrontational to those above them and non-approachable to those below.

A meeting with such people present vs. absent is like day and night. Personally experiencing this, I saw groups transformed from demotivated-lackluster-lifeless chair slugs to excited-active-contributors. Such culturally (negatively) controlling individuals cost an organization far more than can ever be measured.

The book is worth the read if only for the stories. But, the principles, the validation, are the real meat and potatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and if you can't gift it directly, then throw a few copies into envelopes and drop them in your managements' mailboxes. It's about time the pretending to be nice facade gives way to true comprehension of what civility is, and the complete disregard for it will not be tolerated.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-09-22

I urge everyone to read this book, whether they're in an office environment, or just dealing with day-to-day situations. I've bought three copies so far to give to co-workers and family, and I may need more!
The minute you open the book, you will SO recognize what is described!

5 out of 5 stars Accurate Potrayal of Many Work Environments.......2007-07-22

I commend Bob Sutton for publishing this book. It is apparent many jobs expect you to tolerate a coworker or superior whose behavior is off the chart yet protected and sometimes endorsed by management. The cost to a business is high and Bob did a great job of quantifying it. I highly recommend this book if you work in a toxic environment. Bob outlines some great strategies for succeeding in such an environment and discusses how to create policies to prevent one person's inflated ego from sinking the ship.

Book Description

ow many authors would travel coast to coast on a bus to get their book into as many hands as possible? Not many. But that's just what Ron Clark, author of The Essential 55, did to keep his book and message in the public eye. And it worked. After his Oprah appearance, sales skyrocketed: we've sold more than 850,000 copies in six months! The book sat tenaciously on the New York Times bestseller list for 11 weeks. Ron Clark was featured on the Today show, and in the Chicago Tribune, Good Housekeeping, and the New York Daily News-not to mention the calls we've received from teachers and parents who want to get their hands on Ron's guidelines for teaching children. Now in paperback, The Essential 55 will be the perfect book for parents and teachers to slip into their own backpacks, to read on the train or at lunch, and to highlight the sections that resonate for them. And with an author who is truly a partner in getting his message to the masses, we just can't lose.

Download Description

Ron Clark's ESSENTIAL 55 rules were created to help him control his first class in rural North Carolina where the students had little interest in lessons, and the parents believed school was extended day care. In teaching these students to be orderly, respectful and to feel appreciated, he took a group of below-average students and turned them into stars (for example he took 5th grade students who were reading at a 3rd grade level to reading at 6th grade level and loving it). He continued his mission in Harlem, where he found a school that needed him the most and worked the same magic. But it's not magic. Ron Clark knows how to teach by using discipline and affection in almost equal measure. He devotes his time to teaching these kids how to live in the world so that they have respect for themselves and those around them;rules that apply to all of us. Some of the ESSENTIAL 55 include: how to accept compliments, how to return a greeting, how to gracefully lose a game. In hearing Ron Clark's engaging voice, combined with his confident manner at changing the lives of these kids for the better, any reader will feel she can influence a student, a young child or a son graduating from college and going out into the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Review of Essential 55.......2007-09-09

Excellent book and one I recommend all educator's read. All of Ron Clark's rules can be used in every day life whether you are a child or an adult. I would also recommend buying the dvd, The Ron Clark Story. Its a must see for all people who are in the educational field.

This is a true story of an exceptional teacher in a real life school setting.

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2007-08-09

This was ok. There were a few things I would use. A few of his ideas were a little over the top and I would have a hard time including into my day.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT .......2007-07-04

I first heard of Ron Clark when my sister saw him on Oprah. She couldn't stop talking about how great he was and how inspirational. I'm a teacher and she said she almost ordered it for me from the show. The next year several teachers in my district were sent to a conference where he was to speak. Unfortunately, Ron became ill and wasn't able to appear. However, the next year I was sent to the same conference with a different group of teachers and he was there. All I can say is that the book is good, the movie moving, but they are no match to hearing Ron Clark speak in person. There's never a dull moment and he makes you feel that you can accomplish anything........it worked for his students and for me.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly Great Rules - Would work best if you are a Dynamic Person.........2007-06-28

I really enjoyed reading this book. I don't know if I would have the guts to implement all of the "rules" and I think most of them work better when you are the "cool" teacher that Ron Clark is. I have tried to think up even one interesting story about myself that would compare to his background and I can't. I am kind of boring and was always a good student. His explanations of the reasoning behind the rules is great and so far it is the best teaching book I have read.

5 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Must.......2007-06-05

I have 2 children that are teachers. I purchased both the move and the book for their education on how to treat and handle children in the classroom. They were excited over both.

Product Description

This book offers practical suggestions and advice for how to teach and learn those subtle messages that most people seem to pick up almost automatically but that have to be directly taught to individuals with social-cognitive challenges. Given the serious consequences that can befall a person who violates a social rule, the strategies and detailed lists of curriculum items make The Hidden Curriculum a much-needed resource.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good reference but scant on practical strategies.......2007-07-25

I purchased this book a year ago and it sat on my shelf until today. I dusted it off because I am developing a community-based social skills coaching program for an adolescent with high-functioning Autism. I recalled that the book had a nice list of the hidden curriculum for a variety of social situations (e.g. eating at a restauant, telephone skills, rules for dating, reading body language). There were a few in there that I never would have thought of. This was helpful as a jumping off point for making goals and developing a concise script for the sessions.

There is a section in the book on the strategies to teach the hidden curriculum, but it is limited in content. There is a brief description of a technique, examples of worksheets one could use, but there are no blank reproducible materials of the worksheets they used as examples.

I would recommend this book for those just starting out in the field and teachers or parents who want to know what words to use to explain to their child the "unwritten social rules."

By the way, I would also recommend that you "do not talk about how mucus looks or feels in the throat or looks in your tissue." :)

1 out of 5 stars Totally Unhelpful!.......2006-04-02

I bought this book because a reviewer said it would teach people with Asperger's syndrome how to make and manintain eye contact. It doesn't. It just says you should make and maintain eye contact, it doesn't teach you how. This book only tells you what society expects of you, so if you already know what society expects of you, but just cannot figure out how to do it smoothly, don't buy this book. If you already know stuff like, "pull up your pants before coming out of the bathroom", don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Social Skills.......2006-02-19

This book is a must have for anyone whose life is touched by someone with autism. Myles teaches her readers that teaching social skills is not an insurmountable task. It just requires a conscious effort by all.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A simple solution!.......2005-04-24

One of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!

5 out of 5 stars Bridging the Gap & Crossing into Neuro-neutral Grounds.......2004-12-24

This is another book that people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum have been praying for! This sterling work helps decode and identify tacit Social Codes & Rules. For many people on the a/A spectrum, learning these nonverbal subtleties is a major challenge. a/A related conditions are neurobiological and affect sensory processing and integration as well as communication. People on the a/A spectrum encounter a wide range of social difficulties, many of which are addressed in this book.

This work gives good advice on how to make and maintain eye contact; how to position oneself when talking to and listening to another; how to appear natural in practicing these skills. This book also gives a good explanation of how to "read" people socially and how to learn to anticipate possible seeming changes in the Tacit Social Codes & Rules. People with neurotypical (NT) brains already know these Rules and NT readers also can benefit from this book by seeing what people on the a/A spectrum contend with. Rather, people on the a/A spectrum learn these behaviors cognitively as this is not intuitive knowledge among the a/A population. Once the Rules are learned, the next step is understanding when and how and to apply them.

Make a place for this book. It is every a/A navigator's best friend when it comes to improving social skills and interpreting human behavior. It is a bridge from the a/A population to the NT population and moves all, a/A and NT readers alike onto neuro-neutral ground. The information found in this book makes communicating in the NT world so much easier and so much more logical!

It examines the pertinent aspects of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as it applies to human drug and device development, research, manufacturing, and marketing. Topics include: the drug approval process, Current Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Clinical Practices, Quality System Compliance and the corresponding documentation requirements, and FDA inspection processes and enforcement options. 5 out of 5 stars Best Available Book for Regulatory Affiars.......2006-11-23

Best Available Book for Regulatory Affiars, November 22, 2006
Reviewer: H. Burgoyne (Watertown, MA United States) - See all my reviews

I am currently completing a Masters in Regulatory Affairs and throughout all of my classes, this has been the best source (other than the FDA website, which is most current) pertaining to US reg. affairs. Forget any Parexel books...this one actually has an index, making it easy to find the information you need. Not sure about medical devices, as I do not specialize in them, but for pharmaceuticals and biologics this book is pretty comprehensive. You are not going to get a more "layman's level" interpretation of regulations than this book. Regulations are part of the law, which is never easy to "translate". It is hard to incorporate regulations into a book , as they are constantly being updated, but this book does a pretty good job. I have used the book to develop presentations, study for exams and write papers. If you are interested in US Regulatory Affairs, this book is definitely worth the investment. The price seems high, but is comparable to other books with the same subject matter.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't adequately cover medical device regulation.......2006-08-31

Mostly this book covers (perhaps adequately) FDA regulation of the development and approval process of new drugs. These new drugs are (by and large) developed by huge drug companies who doubtless employ teams of lawyers in connection with their FDA submissions and regulatory compliance, and it is quite likely that nearly all involved in that process with such companies would find this to be a "lite" description of FDA drug regulations, and will have little use for this book. (Imagine a beer having only 10 calories, not the 90 or so found in Miller Lite.)

Many medical devices, on the other hand, are developed by small companies (such as my employer) and a "layman's level" description (as opposed to a legal treatise) of FDA medical device regulation would be very useful. Since "medical device" is in the title, I figured when buying this book that there would be coverage relating to all FDA regulations pertaining to medical devices. Its why I (or thankfully, my company) bought the book.

Ther coverage of medical devices is grossly inadequate. Only a small portion of the book treats (again "litely") FDA medical device regulation, and then it largely covers only the premarket approval process for medical devices and barely mentions (or doesn't even mention--I forget) FDA regulation of the manner in which medical devices may be distributed in the US.

Given the relatively high cost of this book, I expected more and was quite disappointed.

Book Description

Just as Moses and the Israelites found themselves caught between "the devil and the deep Red Sea," so are we sometimes overwhelmed by life's problems. But God delivered the Israelites, and He will deliver us too.

The Red Sea Rules reveals, even in the midst of seemingly impossible situations, God's promise to make a way for us. His loving guidance will protect us through danger, illness, marital strife, financial problems--whatever challenges Satan places in our path.

Using the Israelites' story as an example, Robert Morgan offers ten sound strategies for moving from fear to faith. Among them: Realize that God means for you to be where you are. Acknowledge your enemy, but keep your eyes on the Lord. Pray.

Life is hard, especially for Christians. It is certain that we will face difficulties, and that God will allow them, as He allowed the Israelites to become trapped between Pharaoh's rushing armies and the uncrossable Red Sea. But just as certain is the fact that the same God who led us in will lead us out. As The Red Sea Rules makes comforingly clear, He is in control.

I have read this book now three times. It was such an uplift and encouragement for some difficult times that I wanted all my friends and family to have a copy. I bought 20 copies of this book and gave them all away for Christmas gifts. The message is so practical and sensible and opens your eyes to how God is working in your life even when you don't ralize He is! This book gives you the drive to hang in there, be patient, and let God work in his own unique way. You can relax and trust Him to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Little Book Full Of Hope.......2006-08-13

Have a problem? Know someone who does? Buy this little treasure book with ten positive rules for moving from fear to faith. Just as Moses and the Israelites found themselves caught between the Egyptians and the Red Sea as related in the Bible, we too, can face life's overwhelming problems by looking to God for help and applying these rules. Try them - you'll love them!

This is one small gem of a book that people of all ages can relate to, can be inspired and encouraged by, and will marvel at the insights the author presents.

Psalm 37:23-24 states: The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him

5 out of 5 stars He Will NEVER Leave You Nor Forsake You.......2003-07-19

I [the Lord] will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19

Pastor Robert J. Morgan of Nashville, Tennessee, author of 'On This Day' and 'Tiny Talks with God' uses the story of Moses and the Israelites, as an example to explain the ten (10) God-given strategies for difficult times. Remember when Moses and the Israelites were caught between "the devil (Pharoah) and the deep Red Sea?" God delivered them from the adversary and parted the Red Sea for thier escape. The same way we're overwhelmed by life's problems. God will deliver us, too. 'The Red Sea Rules' reveals even in the worst situation God will make a way. His promise and loving guidance will protect us through all the troubles, challenges and obstacles Satan puts in our way.

These ten (10) strategies will move you from fear to faith:
Rule 1. Realize that God means for you to be where you are.
Rule 2. Be more concerned for God's glory than for your relief.
Rule 3. Acknowledge your enemy, but keep your eyes on the Lord.
Rule 4. Pray.
Rule 5. Stay calm and confident, and give God time to work.
Rule 6. When unsure, just take the next logical step by faith.
Rule 7. Envision God's enveloping presence.
Rule 8. Trust God to deliver in His own unique way.
Rule 9. View your current crisis as a faith builder for the future.
Rule 10. Don't forget to praise Him.

No matter where you are in life's storm-east or west, up, down and under. God will make a way. No sea is deeper than the ocean of His Love. No army, force or enemy can overcome His throne of grace and His work in our lives. Just like the reality of the Red Sea, God will always make a way for His trusting children, even if He must split the sea to do it. Sometime time ago, a friend told me of this book of how much of an impact it made in their life. It was the only book that they would refer to in time of encouragement and hope. If you're going through a difficult time in your life I recommend this. It's my companion I can look to. A reminder that there is a God who loves and cares to make a future plan for all of us. Just trust Him.

5 out of 5 stars Rules of the Red Rubber Ball.......2007-08-13

This is a great book to remind, motivate and inspire us to play, enjoy life and do what makes our hearts sing. I found this book to be fun and inspirational!

5 out of 5 stars Have you found your Red Rubber Ball yet??.......2007-07-22

Although written very simply and easy to read in an hour or so, its meaning and power go very deep. Best read a couple or three times in quick succession to make sure the simple message but powerful ideas sink in properly. Both inspiring and motivating this book may be just the one to kick you in the "proverbial" and get you on track and make something of your life.

It's all about finding your deepest PASSION & interest about something you do (or want to do) in life, committing to it & then staying the course & not listening to the doubters & naysayer's (no-hopers) in life that've already given up & are already halfway through digging their own miserable grave.

Clearly set out & simple to understand & follow rules in the book help & guide you on the right course & keep you their. Keep it by your bedside when you need something to inspire you on those occasional gray "down" days when you may be feeling a bit negative.

It's worth a hundred or more of those other so-called Self Help copycat Positive Mental Attitude books. It's written by someone who's already been there & done it!

Are YOU stuck in a rut?? Get this book NOW & start a new life, for you, your family and those closest to you (your real friends). This book may be short, but so is life, so get going RIGHT NOW!! & buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Quick inspiration for your own personal journey.......2007-07-21

A colleague of mine gave me the book after seeing Kevin at a recent conference. I hadn't heard of the book. The cover texture was interesting. Yet, I didn't pick it up immediately until I saw a BlackBerry ad featuring Kevin Carroll. The coincidence was enough to make me go grab the book and I didn't put it down until I was finished. Although "ROTRB" not a lengthy book, it is intriguing, engaging, stimulating and thought-provoking. It's a great read for anyone who is commanding their own personal journey. The short bursts of inspiration didn't overwhelm me, rather they served up just enough information that my own thoughts had to kick in. Because of the circumstances of me obtaining the book and finally picking it up, I was amazed when I saw the quote on pg. 86 "One way to {embrace the unexpected} is to be on the lookout for, and respect, coincidence. I do not necessarily believe in fate, but, for me, coincidental occurrence strengthens my belief that I'm on the right path." The Rules of the Red Rubber Ball was a pallatable dose of inspiration that will continue to fuel my own personal journey.

2 out of 5 stars High fluff, low substance.......2007-07-04

Anyone who has done any serious self-analysis of their career, values, and place in life will probably find that this doesn't offer anything new. The author is very self-absorbed and rah-rah, and I understand that some people consider his writing to be motivational. If nothing else, he is a good salesman for being able to hawk this short, insipid book at a $14.95 list price.

If you're looking for substance, there are plenty of other books on this topic that can offer it. ("Finding Your Perfect Work" by Paul and Sarah Edwards comes to mind right offhand . . . . ) However, I'm sure some people don't want to -- or can't -- read anything that complex, and others lack self-motivation and need to hear cheerleader talk. For them, "Red Rubber Ball" is a good option. The book could also be given as a cutesy graduation present for snoots who would be offended by Dr. Seuss yet who are too video-game stultified to comprehend or even sit through the writings of Epictetus or Stephen Covey. In other words, this would make a good humorous gift for people with no sense of humor, which is the only reason that I gave it two stars instead of one.

5 out of 5 stars The Energy Bus.......2007-09-23

A simple story with a powerful message. A wake-up story for all our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Don't underestimate the powerful message in this small book.......2007-09-06

Jon Gordon is affable, upbeat, ampy and committed to changing the world with his message of positive energy. He is a speaker, a coach, and a consultant to companies large and small.
What the heck is positive energy? According to Jon, "No one goes through life untested and the answer to these tests is positive energy. Not the rah, rah, motivational, cheering kind of positive energy, although there certainly is a time and place for that as well. But rather when I talk about positive energy I'm referring to the optimism, trust, enthusiasm, love, purpose, joy, passion and spirit to live, work and perform at a higher level; to build and lead successful teams; to overcome adversity in life and at work; to share contagious energy with employees, colleagues and customers; to bring out the best in others and in yourself; and to overcome all the negative people (I call energy vampires) and negative situations that threaten to sabotage your health, family, team and success."

In The Energy Bus, Jon teaches us how to have the things he talks about above through a man named George. George is having a crappy time of life. We quickly learn that his life is a direct result of his choices-no surprise there. George happily plays the victim which allows him to wallow in his familiar misery complaining all the while. Everyone and everything is against George the way he sees it. But readers of The You Revolution know better. The people in George's life are frustrated and ready to pull out or kick him out if something doesn't change. Then George is forced to ride the bus to work for 14 days while his car gets repaired. Lucky for George his life is never the same.

Jon based this book on a true encounter he had with an airport shuttle bus driver. It seems Jon was not always The Energy Guy or positive about much of anything. This person started a change in Jon that he was inspired to share with others and the book really is a gem.
Don't be put off by the simplicity of the concept. Jon does a great job mirroring real life through real people. The books strength lies in the simplicity of his style and story. His lessons for George are summarized in his 10 Rules that make it easy to zero in on the ones that speak to you so you can put them into practice.

Regardless of where you are on the continuum of positive and in control regardless of what is happening in your life vs. life isn't fair and I'm going to eat some worms The Energy Bus is a quick, uplifting read. If you are sure you create your life and no one can throw you off a positive track then read it and just enjoy hearing how one man got his life back. If you are not sure that there is anything you can do about all the "stuff" that seems to "happen" to you and you feel beaten up by it all, then by all means read it and be open to the message. I'm going to let you in one a little secret. Jon Gordon has based this book loosely on himself. It seems Mr. Positive Energy was not always like this. He was a negative guy who felt like everything bad that could happen would happen to him. But he learned a few things along the way. He learned because he was at rock bottom but he was open and wanted something to change.

Although the book uses a business model for George and the concepts it is valuable for individuals as well as teams.

Sometimes something so simple comes along and we might dismiss it for that reason. Give this book a second look. You may find you are recommending it to a co-worker or sig other.

5 out of 5 stars "Get onboard this bus!".......2007-08-23

Wow! This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. It is perfect for schools and educational themes. I encourage all principals to read it and think about using the bus ticket theme with their staff. Susan Bechtol, High School Principal

5 out of 5 stars A fine parable for modern times.......2007-07-27

Readers of 'business fables' may find business secrets easier to absorb when they're embedded in the 'fable' format - and THE ENERGY BUS: 10 RULES TO FUEL YOUR LIFE, WORK, AND TEAM WITH POSITIVE ENERGY is no exception. It tells of a frustrated manager forced to take the bus to work - there to find a new breed of character in the form of bus driver and patrons who discuss everything from the effects of negativity on project management goals to cultivating the habit of building positive energy. A fine parable for modern times, especially for frustrated business managers seeking new pathways for team development, and for the libraries catering to them.

4 out of 5 stars Practical gems for the ambitious worker.......2007-07-01

After reading Richard Templar's The Rules of Life: A Personal Code for Living a Better, Happier, More Successful Life, it seemed like the logical action to take and pick up his second "Rules" book because his first one contains common sense trinkets of pure wisdom that are immediately practical and usable.

The Rules of Work is also a collection of jewels to be learned and practiced.

We spend most of our lives at work therefore it makes sense to find methods to do our job more efficiently with less effort and better outcomes. However, this book isn't about working more efficiently but more effectively, seemingly rising to the top of the business, company or corporation (to our fellow workers at least) effortlessly, reaching our intended outcomes and goals

But what does the author mean by "rules"? Doesn't a job description, company policy or even the type of industry you're in already have rules to follow? The answer to this question is yes and no. These rules will not be found in any "starter kit', informing the new employee about break times, dental plans and where the bathrooms are located. These rules are about creating a new persona, the right attitude, being committed, putting in 100% without letting your fellow workers know how hard you really work.

Some of these "rules" appear like `work givens', for example taking care of one's appearance, dressing well, smiling, developing your own style and learning to speak well and write well. Similar to other `motivational business books', Templar also stresses the importance of having a stated plan, short term and long term, anticipating threats and spotting golden opportunities when they arise. This book really is about being smart, alert and always one step ahead of everyone else.

The key to any sort of success is actually naming what you want and creating a workable plan to attain that particular goal no matter whether the goal is becoming a millionaire, a better sales manager, teacher, doctor or priest. The second most important ingredient to any success is one's "desire". Ambition, drive, willingness to work effectively or one's will to simply become better at what we do and who we are comes down to how bad you want it. It doesn't matter how many courses you take or how many books you read, you have to really want something in order to attain it.

The Rules of Work contains many guidelines to help the ambitious worker get where they want to go, and if you have that necessary basic desire, this text will certainly help you along the way.

4 out of 5 stars Read it - Think about it - Do what's right.......2007-03-25

The book is an interestingly crafted tool to get one to think about one's personal-corporate behaviour. The other reviewers, particularly Matthew Dodd, have described it well.

No tool is perfect, but it's far better than most.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-16

Okay.. The best part about this book is that each chapter represents one of the rules of work. If you don't feel you need to read in depth about one rule, just move on to the next chapter.
75 percent of the rules in this book are right on the money, like avoiding the gossip of work and knowing who the bosses favorites are and befriending them.
This book should come free with your college degree if you're going into the corporate business world to work.
Highly recommended!!!
Hope this helps!!!

2 out of 5 stars An Average read.......2006-07-01

The Rules of Work provides regular advice to would be managers/bosses however in my opinion it is not a fundamental read. It's basically a "How to" book with simple ideas. The reader will find that most rules are quite obvious.

3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Words on the World of Work.......2006-06-13

If you are looking for some good insights and perspectives from an experienced business manager about how to use the unwritten and unspoken rules of your workplace to your advantage, then you should read this book. Templar's 100 rules cover the gamut from what to wear and how to act to get noticed, to developing a career game plan. If you have never worked in an office environment, this book will help prepare you for what you will likely experience. If you have spent any time in an office environment, you will find many familiar situations to which you can relate.

The book is divided into ten parts (Walk Your Talk, Know That You're Being Judged at All Times, Have a Plan, If You Can't Say Anything Nice--Shut Up, Look After Yourself, Blend In, Act One Step Ahead, Cultivate Diplomacy, Know the System--and Milk It, Handle the Opposition), each with ten rules, that cover many important and sensitive aspects of virtually any work environment. Each rule is presented in two pages in a very conversational writing style that is generally easy to read.

I liked most of the content of the book. However, the book had way too many distracting spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors (including a 115-word sentence!) that detracted from the main points. Also, I found too many shady or questionable passages that seemed to contradict the rules they were describing or other rules:
-"You have to look as if you gossip without ever doing it." (from Rule 31--Don't Gossip)
-"But if in doubt--never lie or embellish if you can't think fast on your feet." (from Rule 44--Never Lie)
-"You don't need to volunteer information unless it directly helps you to do so...Sometimes it pays to be a little editorial with what truth you are giving out." (from Rule 47--Know the Difference Between the Truth and the Whole Truth)
-"If you need information and someone asks you why you need it, invent something entirely bogus...Don't lie, but you can be circumspect, devious, inventive, creative, eccentric, and you are allowed to set up a decoy." (from Rule 95--Don't Give Too Much Away)

Despite the book's shortcomings, I found many worthwhile points that either reinforced what I already knew or did, or that I am adapting into my overall style and behavior:
-"There is no bad karma in trying your hardest to be pleasant, cooperative, helpful, friendly, kind, and honest in your dealings with others around you." (from Rule 24--Develop a Game Plan)
-"Remember though what we said right from the outset--you have to be able to come up with the goods, you must be able to do the job--and do it well. That is the bottom line. If you can't do the job leave the stage." (from Rule 67--Walk the Walk)
-"You must work to live, not live to work. Don't take stuff home with you--learn to be assertive and say no. Put your family first. Spend time with your children--they will grow up so fast you will miss their precious childhood if you work your way through it...." (from Rule 80--Put Things in Perspective)
-"There are no bad jobs, only bad attitude to jobs." (from Rule 99--Capitalize on the Career-Enhancing Moments)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, funny, appropriate and real.......2007-06-16

I stumbled upon this book and am so glad I did.

The author has an obvious love and passion for Jesus and a desire to tell others about how to be a godly and virtuous woman. Forget "The Rules" - Read and apply the principals outlined in the book and fall in love with the Savior. In a culture that forces one to immediate gratification, this book will inspire and motivate you to pray for your husband to FIND you ("He who finds a wife finds a good thing") while you are pursuing God's plan for your life. In addition to inspiring single women, this book also encourages married women and provides practical advice to becoming an irresistable wife.

The book is easy to read, humorous, points to Jesus, scripturally based and applicable for today. I like the use of scriptural stories which illustrate not only how to be a godly and faith inspired woman, but how the scriptures are truely timeless and relevant. She also starts each chapter with a prayer - beautiful, powerful and authentic prayer - preparing the heart of the reader to greater faith.

5 out of 5 stars practical, down to earth advice.......2007-05-15

I found this to be a very down to earth book with practical advice. I have begun applying some of Michelle's principles and am finding that they really do work. Recently divorced after 28 years of marriage, I was a little unsure of how to approach dating again. I am now in a new relationship. This handy reference has helped my self assurance and I am using my power much more effectively than I ever would have otherwise. Thanks, Michelle!

I bought 8 copies of this book for friends and family. It was so life changing I had to share this wealth of knowledge.

If you loved "The Rules for Being Human" attributed to "Anonymous" in the bestseller Chicken Soup for the Soul, you're in luck. The author--corporate trainer Chérie Carter-Scott, Ph.D.--has stepped forward and written a follow-up book: If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules. This book, "a basic spiritual primer for what it means to be a human," discusses each of the 10 rules (e.g., "There are no mistakes, only lessons," and "Lessons are repeated until learned,") and discusses them with kindness, eloquence, and wisdom. For example, rule 1 is, "You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth." Carter-Scott discusses the challenge of making peace with the body we've been given, and the lessons of acceptance (appreciating it as it is), self-esteem (viewing yourself as worthy, despite how your body looks or performs), respect (treating it like a "valuable and irreplaceable object"), and pleasure (indulging in the five senses to "unlock the joy stored within you"). Similarly, each of the rules has four "lessons." You'll read this inspirational book more than once, and mark quotes to tell friends. --Joan Price

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Before Cherie Carter-Scott discovered her true calling as a writer of inspirational books, she worked as a teacher. As she reads, her experience and talents as an instructor are evident. She carefully outlines her rules and lessons, frequently slowing her cadence to verbally highlight key points for her "students." Fortunately, Carter-Scott's reading is more like listening to an insightful and sometimes humorous storyteller than sitting in a classroom waiting for the bell to ring. You're likely to find yourself nodding in recognition of shared human foibles, and Carter-Scott speaks with such contagious enthusiasm that even the most resistant among us will be persuaded to do a bit of self-examination. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Elizabeth Laskey

For one of her workshops several years ago, Chérie Carter-Scott, a corporate trainer and consultant, composed a list of basic truths about life, which she named "The Ten Rules for Being Human." Right away, the Rules resonated with her clients, who photocopied and passed the list to friends and relatives. Within months, Chérie's Rules were in thousands of homes all over the country, and eventually, they were published in Chicken Soup for the Soul and have also appeared in Ann Landers' column. Although there's no formula to help you win the game of life, Chérie's Rules convey a universal wisdom that, once understood and embraced, can contribute to meaningful relationships with ourselves and others, at work and in the home.

In If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules, Chérie shares that there are no mistakes in life, only lessons that are repeated. In thoughtful, inspirational essays illustrated with encouraging personal anecdotes, she includes the lessons that can be learned from each of the Rules and offers insights on self-esteem, respect, acceptance, forgiveness, ethics, compassion, humility, gratitude, and courage. Best of all, Chérie shows that wisdom lies inside each one of us and that by putting the Ten Rules for Being Human into action we can create a more fulfilling life.

Chicken Soup for the Soul, they instantly became a favorite section of that wildly successful book.

Now Carter-Scott, an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, brings the rules to life by applying them to anecdotes drawn from her own encounters, as well as stories from her family, close friends, and workshop participants. Presented in a personal format, these steps to becoming a satisfied and well-adjusted person are sure to garner an even wider following. -->

Wow. This lady does present some interesting ideas. A different way of looking at life but makes good sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars A gentle book to increase your awareness.......2006-02-21

This book was presented to me when I was already on my deliberate conscious path. If I would have read this book when I first begun my journey perhaps it would have resulted in having even more clarity to work with. But either way, the book is a must read for those who desire to move forward int their lives.

4 out of 5 stars If There Is a Healthy Self-Help Book, This Is The One.......2005-09-09

Many of the concepts she puts forth in the book are time-tested and clearly communicated. Her agenda appears to be to help readers find what is true for themselves by using the 'rules' and their explanations, rather than to dictate black and white do's and don'ts. Her examples demonstrate the underlying challenges to living a successful life and she offers healthy choices for behavior and attitude. She writes from compassion rather than ego, from a desire to reach out, rather than to preach.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful book filled with wisdom.......2004-08-17

I first listened to this on audio tape and was so impressed by the principles put forth that I purchased the hardcover copy to read. I found this to be one of those books that helps us put things in perspective while providing tangible ways to improve our lives. The best thing I can ever say about a book is that I keep it in my personal library and go back to it over and over. I do that with both the audio and hard copy versions of this work. Thank you Cherie Carter-Scott!
