3 out of 5 stars The Horse's Pain-FreeBck and Saddle-Fit Book.......2007-10-05

This book has good information that applies to all horses, but it is definitely slanted towards fitted english saddles with a small section on western saddles. I'm a western rider, so I was disappointed there wasn't more information on western saddles. But I still learned alot.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Backs.......2007-10-02

This is an excellent book for understanding how a saddle should fit and how to measure yourself and your horse correctly. It has been an invaluable asset for choosing a new saddle that is comfortable for my horse who is hard to fit. I wish I'd read this 3 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-08-05

Great book that covers all aspects of good saddle fitting clearly. Its easy to read and understand, and easy to put into practice. Great tips on how to judge if the saddle is any good before you even leave the saddlery shop to try it. Mostly english saddles but principles apply to any saddle. Also touches on treeless saddles but in no great detail.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who rides.......2007-07-07

When you think of how much a decent saddle--even a used decent saddle--costs, this book is worth its weight in gold. Learn how to evaluate saddle fit rather than relying exclusively on the advice of tackshop employees (who might have sales motives other than keeping your horse's back healthy), your barn's self-appointed know-it-all, or blind luck and eBay. For less than the cost of shipping one trial saddle, you can have an educated view of fitting an English saddle to suit your horse and keep his back pain-free and healthy.

Buy it, share it, give it as a gift. It's suitable for rank beginners and first time horse owners, but will also be valuable to seasoned pros.

4 out of 5 stars Pain-Free Back and Saddle -Fit.......2007-05-07

This book is easy to read and informative.
Not only did I learn about how to tell if a saddle would fit my horse but also how to recognize signs of soreness from poor saddle fit. The book explained how and why a saddle needed to fit the whole back of the horse and how a a saddle could detract or enhance an athletes performance.
Saddle fit for the rider were included and even some tips on choosing a saddle blanket.
Well worth purchasing.

Book Description

The irrepressible future Governor of Texas is back with a crusade to stop the 'wussification' of the Lone Star State K inky Friedman returns after Texas Etiquetteat his outrageous best as he gives Americans a look at the state made famous by the Alamo, the armadillo, Willie Nelson, and, well, Kinky Friedman. Texas Hold 'Emis composed of provocative essays, autobiographical pieces and profiles of such stellar Texans as his friends Willie Nelson, George W., and Racehorse Haynes. There is also a treasure trove of lists, quizzes and humorous recipes, including: Roy Rogers' rules for being a cowboy compared to Kinky Friedman's rules, a Texas-style astrological chart, Ten Alternate Uses for Salsa, Tex My Ride-or how to make a vehicle more Texas-and cartoons from the twisted genius of Kinky's soulmate, the great cartoonist John Callahan.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Too funny for politics.......2007-05-11

All I knew about Kinky Friedman before reading this book was that he was a little known entertainer who ran for Governor of Texas in 2006. "Probably a disgruntled liberal," I thought. I didn't know that Kinky was Jewish, had kinks in his hair, was better known as an author than as a western musician, or that he was much more intelligent than I had imagined. After reading this book I now know a bit more about Friedman and respect him a lot more than I did when I didn't vote for him in 2006. But I'm still not sure what this book is about.

In the beginning, it touches lightly on politics and in the end briefly revisits the subject. In between, it covers a wide range of seemingly unrelated topics in a humorous vein vaguely reminiscent of S. J. Perlman. Friedman can be funny, yet, at the same time, his humor is often profound and sometimes revealing.

I learned a bit about a lot of things "Texan" while reading this book. I learned, for example, how to rig your truck and the slang used by those incarcerated in Texas prisons in their attempt to communicate with one another. I hope I never have to use this particular jargon. I also learned how to tell if you're a real Texan; some of the "firsts" for Texas; the rather tenuous relationship between eagle scouts and mass murderers; why one should stay at the Menger Hotel when in San Antonio; and much more.

So, if you want to learn a bit about Texas or just enjoy reading books by ex-candidates for governor or Texas, this book might be for you. As for Kinky, he appears to be too funny to be successful in politics. Politicians, as everyone knows, stopped being funny a long time ago.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done Kinkster!.......2006-04-06

Well now, Kinky Friedman and I have spent some time now in my bathroom and I have finished the contents of his book "Texas Hold 'Em: etc." It's quite a ride. I literally laughed AND cried and had to skip a couple of parts that were just too repetitous for me (the dictionary part). You can't ask much more from an author than to touch your emotions and lift your heart and he does both very nicely. I must admit that a big drawing card for me to buy this book was that it had drawings by Callahan. They do NOT disappoint. Wonderful. I so hope Kinky wins in Texas and maybe even moves on from there. I am just positive that he would do no more harm than the folks they have in there now if Mr. Delay is any example. Hooray for American politics to have such creatures in it.

1 out of 5 stars This book is retarded.......2005-11-29

A friend who had the same taste in reading as me recommended this book so I bought it. I was in a few spots funny, but more dumb then anything. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Kinky really comes into his own with this book!.......2005-10-29

I've been a long time fan of Kinky and read all of his novels. Now, he has gotten away from his 'off the wall' mysteries with their wonderful characters.Kinky is one of the most gifted and entertaining authors around today. He can come up with a one-liner as good as anyone around.Without even a seconds pause,he can make the political correct run for cover. As a Jewish Country singer he has no equal, especially when you realize he comes from New York and is completely at home in Redneck Texas.
Right now he is in the process of runing fot Governor of Texas. One can never tell what the results of an election will be,but somehow I think that worse things could happen than he wins.
In this book he explains many facets of life, as can be seen in some of these quotes, and even gives us some insight into how things will be done under his Governorship.
"The question is whether a candidacy is a joker or whether the current crop of politicans is the joker."
"My platform is to fight the wussification of this great state and bring back the glory of Texas."
"To be elected in Texas one must believe in a Supreme Being."
He also passes on other wisdom;such as:
"You know you're from Texas if you've been married and divorced five times and still have the same in-laws.
"I had the rare distinction of being introduced by the Rev.Jimmy Snow as the first full blooded Jew to appear on The Grand Ole Opry."
"Saddam's a thug with an excellent tailor."
"As old Austinites used to say;"Onward through the fog."
I guarantee ,if you pick up this book;you'll have a hard time putting it down.

5 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Play Poker to Enjoy This.......2005-09-23

Texas Hold'em is Kinky Friedman at his best. Full of annedotes and commentary. No subject is off limits. I must admit, if you are from Texas (which I am not) you will surely get more laughs then a Yankee. Kinky takes the reader on a variety of rides through his mind, refusing to stop even when the trails become muddy. The book is so good, you will have to reread it just to make sure you got all it. Texas Hold em' is easy to read -- whether on a horse or on a train or sitting in a recliner. Nothing complicated, just a bunch of a essays that make the book very difficult to put down. I hope this isn't the last we've heard from the Kinkster.

Book Description

The Western is the most important genre in American cinema. Though the production of films may have declined since the 1960s, the Western's influence has spread worldwide, and far beyond the movies. Recently the New Western History, attempting to put the record straight where women, ethnic minorities and other marginalised groups are concerned, has given new impetus to film-makers, while best-selling writers such as Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy have found new stories to tell.

This collection of new essays pays particular attention to areas of the Western hitherto neglected, such as the early silent Western, the singing cowboys of the 1930s and the television Westerns of the 1950s. It examines the perennially urgent topic of Native Americans and looks beyond America to examine the European Western and to consider the significance of Mexico. It also looks at the role of Westerns in magazine advertising and in fashion, and the spate of television documentaries on Western topics.

Specially commissioned for this volume, all the articles throw fresh light on a genre still not accorded its due by the critical establishment.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Off the Beaten Trail.......2006-11-18

Edward Buscombe is one of the best scholars writing about Westerns today, and he adds to his reputation by putting together this anthology of scholarly articles that explore topics general histories of the Western genre tend to ignore.

There is a marvellous essay on Douglas Fairbanks (Sr.) as a Western star in his pre-swashbuckler career. Also I was fascinated by the piece on Gene Autry and why the singing cowboy craze began when it did. The essay on the extraordinary popularity of TV Westerns in the late Fifties showed why this was due to the economic factors facing the TV networks then.

In short, the pieces collected here avoid the tried and true topics that have been talked to death elsewhere. For the most part, they are void of academic jargon and can be read with enjoyment by the general reader with an interest in the Western genre.

    Book Description

The western is one of the most popular genres in American film history, and some estimate more than 20,000 of them have been produced. Its popular portrayal of the American West, as a place where good and evil are clearly defined, created heroes that are still among the most respected and remembered in film history. Writers Lane Roth and Tom W. Hoffer, William E. Tydeman III, R. Philip Loy, Gary Kramer, Raymond E. White, Michael K. Schoenecke, Sandra Schackel, Jacqueline K. Greb, Jim Collins, Richard Robertson, and Gary Yoggy each contributed an essay, focusing on the performances of some of the most famous of Hollywood's leading cowboys and cowgirls. Analyses of the works of G.M. "Broncho Billy" Anderson, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, James Stewart, Barbara Stanwyck, Steve McQueen, and James Arness are included. James Drury of The Virginian relates his firsthand experiences of movie making by way of introducing this collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Katie's Thoughts on A Western Hero.......2001-05-15

I bought Gene Autry's book after seeing him on the TV show Hee-Ha, way back in the early 80's. He was being interviewed by Roy Clark, I believe and during this interview Mr. Autry stated that he recently had published his auto-biography ( Back In The Saddle Again ) with the help of Mikey Herkowitz. I was living in West Plains, Mo. at the time and I didn't have any Idea of how to purchase his book, so I wrote to Gene, in care of the California Angels Baseball Team, in Anaheim, California to ask him were I might find a copy of his book. About 6 weeks had past when I received a letter from Mr. Autry and he had enclosed an autographed Bookplate, an 8x10 Black and White picture of some of the Angels baseball players, some Angels Decals and a very nice letter from him on his Golden West Letterhead paper. He was very nice and happy to know that he still had Fans that were still interested in his career and will being. I found out were I could order his book and did so and I read it immediately upon receiving it and of course put his autographed bookplate in it and I will charish it forever. About his book, it was very interesting, informative and very humorous. I enjoyed reading it very much, so much so that my husband got very ercked with me because I didn't want to put it down. I personally will miss Gene Autry very much. His songs, His acting and his personna on and off the Wide Screen will never be equaled by another. The fact that he took the time out of his busy schedule to write to me and included an autographed Bookplate, which said, personally autographed for Catherine LeBarron " Back In The Saddle Again" is the story of my life. I hope you enjoy reading it. Of course I did leave some parts out. With very best wishes, Gene Autry

      Who knew relationships could be
      so tough?

Stevie Lake, ace reporter! She's joined the Fenton Hall school paper and she's ready to go undercover and break big stories, but her editor has other ideas. Stevie's first assignment is to cover the junior class on marriage. It's not her idea of a hard-hitting investigative piece--especially since her own "marriage" is headed for divorce court faster than you can say "cavalletti." However, Callie Forester and her "husband" are having a blast planning for the future. In fact, as far as someone is concerned, they're having too much fun.
Meanwhile, Carole Hanson is still trying to figure out what the future holds for her and Ben, while Lisa Atwood just wonders whether she and Alex have a future.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars annoying.......2005-11-22

I, too, wish the author would tell us what Carole's PSAT score was. If it's that important to the book, we should at least get a rough number. It was hard to believe, too, especially since Carole scored higher than Lisa. That seemed impossible considering how much effort Lisa puts into her schoolwork.

Anyway, Stevie has become a school reporter and is profiling a "marriage" project the class is doing. She is going to focus on herself, her friend Callie, and Veronica diAngelo, who isn't happy with either her partner or Stevie interviewing her.

This was a great book!!i think it is so great that stevie got the assignment on the marraige thing!! the only thing that could have been different was that i think Callie should have a boyfriend -since they say she is so Hot!- and the guy she was paired up with was realy perfect!!To change the subject,i think that George is totaly gross and the perfect NERD!!But i wish that Callie would just tell him off once and for all!!To put it in a nutshell I think bonnie is a real good writer and should keep it up!! I think Pine Hollow is a great serie and also this book. But i've got a question: I don't understand why the characters in the English version are having different names from the German version. In German Lisa is called Julia and Stevie is called Jenny. This are also English names, aren't they?

      5 out of 5 stars Pine Hollow.......2000-07-27

BACK IN THE SADDLE IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST PINE HOLLOW BOOKS I HAVE READ. THINGS BACK AT CAROLE'S HOME ARE BACK TO NORMAL. OF COURSE SHE CAN'T GO TO THE STABLE OR CHAT WITH HER FRIENDS WHEN SHE WANTS, BUT THAT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE. CAROLE SCORED EXTREMELY HIGH ON THE PSAT'S AND HER FATHER RELENTED AND LET HER GO TO PINE HOLLOW FOR FOUR DAYS A WEEK! ALTHOUGH SHE'S NOT ALLOWED TO WORK, FOUR DAYS A WEEK IS BETTER THAN NOTHING. MEANWHILE, LISA'S HAVING A LITTLE BIT OF TROUBLE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF LOVE AND ROMANCE. EVER SINCE SHE GOT BACK FROM GOOD OLD CALIFORNIA SHE HASN'T FELT THE SAME WAY TOWARDS ALEX LIKE SHE USED TO. ALEX FEELS THE SAME WAY, SO THEY DECIDE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM EACH OTHER AND DATE OTHER PEOPLE, AND THEN THEY WILL MEET ON NEW YEARS AND TALK. NOW ABOUT STEVIE. STEVIE'S GETTING MARRIED! BUT NOT TO PHIL. FENTON HALL HAS A KNEW TRADITION GETTING MARRIED FOR AWHILE TO SEE HOW THEY CAN MANAGE. I WON'T RUIN THIS PART, BUT I GOT TO SAY IT IS HILARIOUS! STEVIE IS ALSO JUMPING TO CONCLUSIONS, AS USUAL. SHE THINKS THAT SCOTT FORESTER IS IN LOVE WITH HER, AND THAT'S WHY HE'S HANGING AROUN PINE HOLLOW SO OFTEN. THIS BOOK IS AN AWESOME BOOK. I WON'T RUIN THE ENDING FOR YOU, BUT I RECCOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHLY.

1 out of 5 stars Whining Main Characters.......2004-04-19

If I had not read the third book in the series and had started with this one then I would NOT have read anything else. The main characters had more drama than a stage play. Melissa was constantly making racist remarks and complaining that nobody liked her because she was black. Sharon spent her life making everyone's life miserable because she had been in an accident and wasn't riding like she used to. Jenna spent so much time whining about the horse, Turbo, that she wasn't able to buy and mentally hating her mentally-disabled sister that it was enough to drive a person half crazy.

The only people that were nice were Katie and the assorted supporting characters. For that reason I think that this book was more frustration than it was worth. If you're looking for a happy Saddle-Club type of book then this is NOT the one for you. If you do want to try the series then please read #3: Winning instead.

4 out of 5 stars better than many.......2003-05-11

I also enjoyed this series. As horse stories go these days, it is better than many of them. No, Silver Creek Riders is not the best horse series, but to me it does stand out. Unfortunately, there will probably be no more in the series because the author seems to be very busy right now with other projects. It's no real secret, but Beth Kincaid is a pseudonym for KA Applegate, of Animorph fame.

      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2001-11-25

I have just finished reading Back in the Saddle, and enjoyed it very much! I am a horse-crazy bookworm who has read many, many horse books, and found this book to be better than some of the more popular series because of its interesting plot, realistic characters and satisfying ending. The most disappointing part of the Thoroughbred and Saddle Club series is that the characters are often spoiled and unrealistic, but the Silver Creek Riders series is different. The most annoying part of Back in the Saddle was when the characters critizied beginner riders, mounting blocks, etc. and that made them seem bratty, but perhaps the author wrote it that way purposely because Sharon is pretty bratty for most of the book. If you're searching for a well-written horsey series, try Silver Creek Riders!

5 out of 5 stars BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK! BRING IT BACK!.......2001-07-11

This series is a very good series! WHY ARE THERE ONLY 3 BOOKS? What happened? If someone prevented Beth Kincaid from writing any more of these books, that was a BIG mistake!!! Or did she just decide to stop writing them? Well, that would be a big mistake, too! Why? The reason is that this series has a great deal of potential. Don't get me wrong--there are many other series out there that ROCK; they are SO awesome!--but if Beth Kincaid had continued writing this series, it could have been the best. The first three Silver Creek Rider books are better than the first three books of every other horse book series I've read--and some of THOSE have a GREAT number of books in them. Yes, in many other horse series riders and/or horses overcome drastic hardships. However, so do the characters in this series! I mean, Sharon is still coping with the death of her horse and learning to ride all over again after being in an accident, and Melissa's dealing with divorcing parents and financial problems. Yet we are still provided with ample comic relief. In addition, all of the friends here love horses and are supportive of each other! I'm not saying characters in other series aren't; I'm saying this series is just as good--and made even better with the witty manner and dialogue Beth Kincaid uses to develop her characters and the plot. This series is a very good horse series for young horse-lovers. Silver Creek Riders should be brought back--and by the same author, the smart and talented Beth Kincaid...
