Customer Reviews:
I'm no dummy, but this is good!.......2007-09-09
I have always been seriously put off by the "Dummies" series. I would like to buy books that assume some intelligence on the part of the reader. I don't like being talked down to.
But this book doesn't do that. Instead it explains concepts clearly, and has been a great help to me in understanding the clouds of jargon that surround this topic. The explanation of the components of SOA and how they hook together is excellent!
Because I am not yet directly involved, I cannot judge the accuracy of their details (and of course, they may change over time), but since the objective is to get the main concepts across, I believe the authors are successful.
I really wish, though, that the series were called "Achieving Buzzword Compliance in ...".
Disappoing Book.......2007-08-30
The one thing that most people agree upon for SOA is that there is a lot of confusion. This book unfortunately adds to that confusion.
If you want to know what is going on today in what is being called SOA, this book is fine. It takes a look at what is out there, and reverse engineers it and describes the pieces. Unfortunately what is being done in general and what SOA is supposed to be is quite different.
If you were interested in what SOA is SUPPOSED to be, this book is very far off the mark. If you look at Thomas Erl's definitive books on SOA, you will see a vast difference from SOA as described in this book. Some of the chapters are overviews, for those with little or no existing knowledge of SOA, which is probably what you really wanted.
This SOA for Dummies book might be summarized as:
* SOA is good
* Everybody will be doing it
* Lots of companies are working in that area to implement SOA
* Lots of companies are creating SOA related products
* If you don't go SOA, your company will fail
* There is confusion
* We are a consulting company to help you
But my guess is you already knew this.
One aspect that is missing is an emphasis on open source SOA products. This book focuses primarily on commercial products. Even the commercial sources are continuing to donate parts of their systems to open source, so what was commercial is now open source. That is the continuing trend.
I would say take this book as light reading (even though it's 350 pages), but don't try to remember too much of it. Don't presume the people implementing SOA really know what SOA is all about. I've seen SOA described formally in detailed all the way to the other extreme where some people call everything on the Web as part of SOA, which it isn't. So when you hear someone talk about SOA, be really skeptical.
This book tells you what is going on, not what should be going on. The question for you is just what to you want to implement. Because you want to do it right the first time. Calling anything that has a "service" as part of SOA, won't get you there.
Good Refresher.......2007-08-18
It has been a few years since I worked with Web Services so I was looking for a book that would get me started again. This book did the trick. In addition to the ramp up, I also appreciated the end material including chapters for each major SOA vendor and a good glossary.
Mostly theory.........2007-06-08
This is my first book in the dummies series.I being a technical guy, expected more working examples with explanation. But it is mostly theoretical. The case studies made interesting reading. This book will be suited for managers than technical persons.
Great for cutting through the hype.......2007-03-22
I have used this book and recommended to my staff to help clarify terms, get agreement on basic principles, and help everyone explain SOA better to those who need it explained. The authors have a wealth of experience and have really helped us cut through the jargon jungle which surrounds this area. I recommend it for pros and novices alike.

A must buy for the beginner .......2007-10-14
A must read to all those new to gardening. It is a simple, easy to read and will give you a general understand of all aspects of gardening.
This book is written in the typical style and format of all the Dummy books and is great!
love it.......2007-04-28
checked this out from the library, but had to purchase it! first of all, i knew NOTHING about gardening, so this gave me a starting point and help with the basics. i am slowly learning ... and have started my first vegetable garden! while there are very FEW pictures, the info itself was valuable to me. i have a book that is chock-full of pics, but the text is designed for a novice or advanced gardener. i love to look at that (other) book, but i needed something very basic to begin with- and this is it! good price for all the info you get. a must for those just starting out from scratch! good luck & have fun with your hands in the dirt!

Good Book, Horrible Test Bank Questions.......2007-04-20
The book itself is full of good information about community nursing. The test bank questions are horrible.
Book Description
"Marcia Tate has done it! This is the most practical application of the brain compatible and learning styles research I've ever seen. The twenty strategies will make learning fun again. Every teacher should explore the rich resource for teaching offered in this book!"
—William Bender, Professor
University of Georgia
"When teachers in all schools integrate Tate's 20 instructional strategies into classroom instruction, school will become a place where all children can experience success regardless of their learning style."
—Linda Aikens-Young, Principal
C.J. Hicks Elementary School, Conyers, GA
Design fascinating activities and inspire active learning with proven teaching tools!
Attention spans, subject interest, learning styles, and even levels of understanding vary from student to student. Just as every student is different, teachers have their own personalities and teaching styles. Yet years of research confirm that certain teaching tools awaken the desire to learn in students by engaging their brains. And once their brains are engaged, synthesis, and retention of information will soar!
Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites targets teachers as "growers of brain cells" and encourages them to make practical application of the findings of learning style theorists and neuroscientists. Tactile learners, spatial thinkers, and logical minds alike will become eager students as the strategies in this handbook are implemented. Imagine raising student achievement by meeting the learning needs of each student and increasing subject matter understanding, all while enjoying teaching and learning. Marcia Tate demonstrates 20 strategies, including:
- Using humor and telling stories
- Implementing problem-based instruction
- Incorporating games into lessons
- Utilizing mnemonic devices and metaphors
- And even singing and dancing while learning
Actively engaging students in the learning process is the best way for them to succeed in school—and in life. Give them an edge by growing their dendrites!

Customer Reviews:
From 2 Points of View.......2006-08-05
First and foremost, I am sorry that two readers have not had a positive experience from this book; however, they sound like they are 90 year old teachers who have forgotten why they entered the profession of teaching in the first place. Fill out the retirement papers and go home!
In order to teach a child, we must look at the changes that have occured in the way children learn. With many more students dealing with disorders such as A.D.D. and Opositional Defiance Disorder, our classrooms have drastically changed, and students are dealing with issues today that did not exist five years ago when I was in high school. Therefore, this supports the idea that many of us did not learn the same way as our mothers; I learned in a more technologically up-to-date classroom with access to more media, etc...
The Student Point of View:
I have been a student in a classroom that uses many of the same strategies that Marcia Tate offers in her book Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites, and I absolutely loved the hands on approach that my teachers would provide after reading one of her books or attending a workshop. (Constructivism works!) My classmates were always much more involved with the activities. I can remember some of the cool experiements that my chemistry teacher did with us that if she had not followed with Tate's ideas I doubt I could have even recalled my lab partner's name.
Teacher Point of View:
Furthermore, I have just finished teaching my very first class. I can't say that I am an expert teacher (hopefully, I will be!). However, I can say that based on my evaluations and state test scores, I exceded first year teacher expectations. Also, I had fewer discipline problems than my counterparts, and many of my students went running to the principal telling him how much they had learned from my class. I am not good enough yet to have students bragging on me like that or at teaching the skills necessary to score high on those state/federal tests. But, I used several of Tate's suggestions in my classroom, and I could tell a drastic difference in my abilities. Whatever I was teaching was actually getting across to my students. Moreover, the class that I am referring to was a class of 20 students who had failed this class at least once and at most three times. I am not an experienced enough teacher to get the types of results I got from those students. These failures each became successes. I would recommend any beginning teacher or experienced teacher to read her books or take a workshop with Tate. Afterall, education is a changing process.
I love this book!! Judge it for yourself!!.......2005-01-29
I wish I had this years ago. My kids love it and soaking up everything we do. This half of the year is going great!! I've never had a class so interested in anything!
Excellent book for teachers who WANT to learn.......2004-02-23
For those great teachers out there, they will find they naturally use many of the strategies in this book. This books puts them all in one place and give you more ideas as well as the research to back them up. I do feel sorry for the rater that is having this approached forced on him or her. I am afraid to say that learner centered education is far from "trendy" nor is a constructivists approach to learning. Just throwing the books at the teachers not modeling the approach for even in teacher education, the adults should also construct meaning in their learning. I do agree with the reader that some teaching methods take more time upfront and there is a lot of pressure on teachers to hit all the standards but if retention is key, spend a little more time on the front end and they will retain it after a test rather than just for the test. This book is great if you want 20 specific ideas for injecting new way to learn in your classroom. It is not an all to nothing approach, just try one new thing while maintaining you own teaching style. Those teachers who are stuck in there own methods and fearful of sharing control of the learning with their students will have a hard time with this book.
Missing Pieces.......2003-10-15
I have been in early childhood education for 12 years. Within those 12 years, drastic changes have taken place. Year after year students come to my class with less knowledge. Everyday I try to find a new or better way to teach objectives. I have found that students need hands-on activities that help build the missing pieces of their educational foundation.
"Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites" by Dr. Marcia Tate has been extremely helpful to me. I know you can't totally do away with all worksheets, but today's students need more than that. They need movement, music, manipulatives, and visuals in order to retain what they are expected to learn.
Thanks to Dr. Tate's book, I have another resource to use instead of the regular old "paper-pencil" method.
Strongly Disagree.......2003-05-30
This workbook is being forced on us in the school where I teach. I have to say that I strongly disagree with the ideas presented, but I don't have a choice of whether or not I want to use them in my classroom. If you have a choice, I firmly urge you to do some research on teaching methods. I don't mean "brain-based" research, psychological research, or any kind of research on "how children learn." I mean look for long-term, consensus research on methods that have been proven to work in the classroom. To adopt nonconsensus science as the basis of school policy is to conduct very perilous human experimentation on a large scale without license and with little hope of practical success.
"This theory is very popular among trendy education thinkers and professors. It holds that children learn best by discovering knowledge for themselves through hands-on projects and problem solving, rather than reading something out of a textbook or taking down what the teacher says. The idea is that knowledge you acquire for yourself is more likely to be understood and retained than a piece of information handed to you by someone else.
This view of education is seductive. It sounds so natural, energetic, and ambitious. Taken in moderation, it makes sense. As we all know, the lessons we figure out for ourselves tend to sink in deepest and stick with us longest. It is also true that there are some topics, subjects, and assignments where discovery learning is important. A lab experiment in science, for example, is a form of discovery learning. So is making a map of the school grounds, and collecting and classifying leaves. A good education obviously includes such activities. Virtually no one believes that learning should consist only of listening to teachers and reading from textbooks.
But discovery learning has real limitations in practice when schools try to turn it into the main way children learn academic lessons. First, it is truly inefficient. Having children figure out mathematical operations, for example, by playing games and making things takes a lot of time. There are not enough hours in the school year for students to unearth all there is to know on their own. When you rely on children to "construct" knowledge or skills-rather than systematically introducing material to them-learning can become a disorganized and time-consuming process. Mathematics is a highly structured body of knowledge and does not lend itself to haphazard learning. Second, unless the teacher is ready with corrections, a lot of things one "discovers" for oneself turn out to be wrong. Third, in some places discovery learning becomes a vehicle to reject the idea that there are important skills and information that all children should learn.
To many in the education establishment, the mental process of searching for answers is far more important than mastering any particular body of knowledge. What matters most to them is "learning how to learn." Schools are enthusiastic about making sure students acquire "higher-order thinking skills." Learning goals typically call for teaching kids to "think critically" and "solve problems." Give children the skills to find information and reflect upon it, the argument goes, and they'll become "lifelong learners." There's no need to force them into demonstrating specific knowledge. The problem with this rationale, of course, is that skills don't help students much without knowledge to apply them to. Modern education philosophy seems to have forgotten that knowledge makes you smarter. People we think of as creative geniuses are "brilliant" in large part because they have devoted long years to mastering knowledge in a particular field; what they know has become second nature, and their minds are free to focus and invent."
-The Educated Child
"Watching schools implement untested theories about "kinesthetic," or other intelligences when they can't teach reading looks suspiciously like one more fad. The hard truth is that today's youngsters, as never before, must hone their academic skills. Knowledge pays and pays handsomely; ignorance costs more than we can afford, individually or socially. Schools may want to teach English, mathematics, or physics by using music, dance, or football, but they cannot be permitted to lose sight of their academic mission."

A "must have" for anyone implementing Words Their Way........2007-07-28
Sorts 1-5 are concept sorts, 6-11 are picture sorts for phonological awareness, 12-14 are alphabet knowledge sorts, and 15-27 are sorts for beginning consonant sounds. Assessments are included for each group of sorts. Instructions for introducing/demonstrating the sorts are given, as well as notes for the teacher, literature links for read-aloud, extension activities and my favorite - shared reading texts. I think that this is a fabulous resource and after teaching first grade for 5 years, I plan on implementing Words Their Way in my kindergarten classroom in September. I also think that this is a must have for anyone planning on implementing the program. I don't think that the WTW textbook offers the range of resources in this book.
Reading Specialist.......2005-10-24
This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners! I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.
A MUST for K-2 teachers........2005-02-21
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with the black line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. My favorite is the alphabet printed in several different fonts so students can learn all the ways 'A' might look. I wish I had this 21 years ago when I started teaching. I use it daily now.

Inspiring .......2007-09-25
This is a great book for beginning teachers because it provides with a vast number of activities that help students devlop their writing and reading skills. It is also good for experienced teachers since the book has a lot of new ideas that can be incorporated in the classroom to have children involved and enjoy learning.
Spelling inventory.......2007-09-15
I had to use this text for a graduate course in reading education and have found it invaluable when assessing not only students' spelling abilities, but also their reading abilities. The inventories make it easy to pinpoint areas of need.
Excellent Resource for Teachers!.......2007-08-22
This book is an excellent resource for all teachers (K-8). Provides alternative ideas for teachers to help with reading and spelling. Lots of game ideas and many are able to be modified to use at any level with very little work. Excellent for introducing a new spelling pattern or new vocabulary to your whole class or in small groups. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some new ideas for their reading centers, alternatives to worksheets, etc. I have found this book to be extremely beneficial in my classroom as a resource.

Anyone who has ever been a landlord knows that the rental business is tightly regulated. As the authors of Every Landlord's Legal Guide point out, "a landlord either knows and follows the law or doesn't stay in business long." This book clearly outlines what the law requires of a landlord and, just as importantly, offers advice on how to be conscientious yet profitable. This useful book is filled with helpful information on finding good tenants, agreements and leases, liability issues, and even terminations and evictions. The advice is extremely thorough. For example, the chapter on the landlord's maintenance duties contains information on who is responsible for minor repairs, ways to avoid problems by instituting a preventive-maintenance program, and even possible tenant responses to landlord negligence. The book is rounded out with a chapter on finding a lawyer and an appendix of state laws that may affect your business. Dozens of sample forms are included both as blank hard copies in the book and as templates on the enclosed disk. This book is extremely user-friendly: Stilted legalese is translated into simple English, handy icons highlight particular points in the text, and sidebars provide in-depth analysis on a variety of issues. The authors maintain that success is based on "choosing tenants carefully, keeping good tenants happy, teaching mediocre tenants how to improve and getting rid of bad tenants by applying policies that are strict, fair and legal." This book will help you do just that. --C.B. Delaney

Outstanding.......2007-07-24
This is a must-have book for all landlords and prospective landlords. It is written in plain English that is easy to understand and includes copies of nearly every form you could possibly need. Well written, laid out, and constructed.
Every Landlords legal guide, eighth edition.......2007-04-10
Havent had a chance to go through the entire book; expect I will refer to it when I have a need to do so. It seems quite thorough, though maybe not laid out in a user friendly style as it could be.
A Lead for New Landlords.......2007-03-31
This book is the perfect starting point for people wanting to get into the rental business. Provides you with answers to some questions you didn't think to ask.
Nice beginning, but beware of state law!.......2007-02-25
This book gives you a good first overview, but you absolutely have to get a book on your state's regulations as well, especially if you live in a highly regulated state like Massachusetts. This book for example only gives you a vague idea on how to handle the security deposit, but Massachusetts state law is very specific and not following the rules precisely may cost you the deposit plus penalties.
If there were more starts, this book earns it!.......2007-02-15
I am a landlord, and this puts all the pertinent landlord/tenant info under one cover. WOW! I borrowed this book from the library, and it's so good I had to buy it.
Customer Reviews:
Is mine the same book??.......2007-09-15
My elementary school has added ESL students this year and I'm looking for help. I bought this book based on the reviews I had read. This is a DRY DULL textbook with no practical information. Don't waste your money!!
Words Their Way is the Best! .......2007-04-23
I use Words Their Way in my classroom all the time. I love the way it teaches my students to spell logically and developmentally. I can tell a lot about my students understanding about how English words are written and pronounced by the way they read and spell a word. This book is specifically about English Language Learners and that is an even greater asset. I have used Words Their Way with my ESOL students for awhile but this book really has a great understanding of my students and a better focus on them. I would still include the main book and the books for each developmental spelling stage in the program, but this book helps immensely. It is even better for teachers with ESOL students in their classes who have no or little training in how to teach them. Or for people who want to understand a bit more - like me!
Teachers Need Words Their Way.......2007-03-08
