Book Description

The Basis for the Movie Mean Girls
PARENTS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN GIRL WORLD

Do you feel as though your adolescent daughter exists in a different world, speaking a different language and living by different laws? She does.

This groundbreaking book takes you inside the secret world of girls’ friendships, translating and decoding them, so parents can better understand and help their daughters navigate through these crucial years. Rosalind Wiseman has spent more than a decade listening to thousands of girls talk about the powerful role cliques play in shaping what they wear and say, how they feel about school, how they respond to boys, and how they feel about themselves. In this candid and insightful book, Wiseman discusses:

• Queen Bees, Wannabes, Targets, Torn Bystanders, and others: how to tell what role your daughter plays and help her be herself
• Girls’ power plays, from birthday invitations to cafeteria seating arrangements and illicit parties, and how to handle them
• Good popularity and bad popularity: how cliques bear on every situation
• Hip Parents, Best-Friend Parents, Pushover Parents, and others: examine your own parenting style, “Check Your Baggage,” and identify how your own background and biases affect how you relate to your daughter
• Related movies, books, websites, and organizations: a carefully annotated resources section provides opportunities to follow up on your own and with your daughter

Enlivened with the voices of dozens of girls and parents and a welcome sense of humor, Queen Bees and Wannabes is compelling reading for parents and daughters alike. A conversation piece and a reference guide, it offers the tools you need to help your daughter feel empowered and make smarter choices.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for moms of preteen girls.......2007-06-08

This book was such an eye opener. It helped me to not only understand where my girls are right now but also helped me understand some of the things I experienced as a girl in middle and highschool. I think every mother of a preteen daughter should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read to understand adolescent girls OR boys!.......2007-05-07

Though this book is intended for parents, anyone who spends time with young people- mentors, teachers, program administrators, etc.- will benefit from the insights and detailed instructions contained in this highly readable volume!

It is clear that Ms. Wiseman has done her homework. Working with diverse groups of teenagers for years myself and having been one not THAT long ago) I recognize and relate to the characters and conflicts she describes and value the advice she offers.

If you've seen the movie, MEAN GIRLS, which was based on this book, you've gotten a small taste of what's addressed here- cliques, fads, teen politics, gossip, sex, and parental influence- but there's lots more!

And for those of us who are raising boys to be honorable and respectful young men, Queen Bees and Wannabes is a terrific resource, too.

I've often heard that there is no "manual" for raising kids. I respectfully disagree- there are MANY manuals for raising kids and this is the best one I've read dealing with adolescents and teens.

READ it and encourage others to do so. The young people in your life will thank you for it!

4 out of 5 stars Realistic and honest.......2007-04-20

I am a 25 year-old girl who has experienced many of the situations cited in this book, either as the target or the bully. I grew up an overweight, unpopular, artsy little girl. In the 8th grade, I lost a ton of weight, grew, and my clothes became trendy. Needless to say, things changed. With one easy swoop, I went from victim to bully. Only now, as a (young) adult, I come to terms with both my nerdy, victim past and my mean girl high school years, with the help of this book. As other reviwers noted, most teenage girls will probbaly experience both sides of the scenario and often are a combination of the traits lised for each of the diff. person. types. As others noted with this book, there is no judgement imposed on the "mean girls". Most girls have "mean" moments, no matter how quiet, shy or unassuming, and I think Wiseman portrays this accurately. Sometimes, the worst bullying is from girls who simply follow others or stealthily do things, like not inviting someone out with a group of friends or not being honest because they're too "nice". I find it completely annoying that alot of the mothers/teachers/family friends/etc. who are commenting on here refuse to believe that their daughtes/students are not like that. ALL girls, or kids, are to some degree. It doesn't make them evil or not great kids. It makes them human. You can still be "hysterically funny, kind, emotional, creative and most of all INDIVIDUALS" as one reviwer wrote but still have mean girl moments. I don't think Wiseman oversimplifies. I think alot of the parents and teacher do in their reviews. Kids are much more complex than being good or bad. The mean girls need love too and have problems as well. I'd like to believe that some people are just mean and that's it but that's often not the case. Some are defensive or have family problems or are insecure or are being abused or may be depressed. Wiseman doesn't demonize anyone in this book, which I find great. In addition, to the reviewer who said she has no credentials and should not be writing about this, as a youngish adult woman, I'd rather have someone who knows what goes on and is close in age commenting on this stuff than someone who is out of touch.

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for every parent!!!.......2007-04-01

It can be painful to look back honestly at your junior high and high school experiences. But it will better enable you to help your children navigate through those emotionally turbulent years. Rosalind Wiseman has the personal and professional experience to guide any reader to a better understanding of the pitfalls and landmines on this journey. She offers not only her words, but the words of many 11-21 year olds that are currently in the trenches. Very interesting, very insightful, and seemingly dead on target. A surprisingly easy read although the subject matter is almost gruesome at times, in the degree of painful insight it offers.

Just not that impressed with this book. The write-up was much better than the book itself. Superficial. Will be selling my copy as used.

4 out of 5 stars Well done adaptation of a great book.......2007-04-29

"Abba's Child" is, in my opinion, the quintessential Brennan Manning. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed all that he has written. I have read and reread the book many times over as there is too much to process at first pass.

"Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a student adaptation of "Abba's Child." While, in general, I am not a fan of audience adapted works, I had heard good things and purchased a copy to give away to a younger friend of mine. Of course I wanted to peruse it before giving it away and found myself reading it through, enthralled by the original content with new language. I found it to be equally as powerful-- not the least watered or dumbed down.

If you have read any other Manning, or if you are an avid reader and contemplative thinker, go ahead and buy "Abba's Child." But, regardless of who you are, "Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a well done adaptation of a great book. I don't believe you will be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Fr. Manning preaches a false gospel - don't be fooled!!!!!.......2006-09-13

Fr. Brennan Manning is a Franciscan priest who attempted to marry without being dispensed from his vow of celibacy in 1982. He has since peddled a false gospel that is built around the idea that God's pardon is unconditional - a euphemism for saying that you can be forgiven for your sins without repenting and amending your life. This is a lie, and a defense mechanism Fr. Manning has evolved to assuage his guilty conscience. If you really want to seek the Mercy of God, I suggest you read "Divine Mercy in my soul", the diary of St. Faustina, avaulable here on Amazon.com. God's Mercy is endless, but you cannot be pardoned if you are not sorry; Fr. Manning's false gospel will do you no more spiritual good than it has done him. He needs your prayers and your pity - not your money or your reading time.

4 out of 5 stars Dripping with Wisdom, Solace.......2005-10-05

This wonderful book reinforces the notion (absurd to many) that "God loves us exactly the way we are - but that he loves us too much to let us stay like this." A true shot in the arm for anyone seeking the truth about God and self, and wondering what's next in life.

Despite the disarming title, Manning has not written a "self-help" book, he's written about divine help, found through surrender and brokenness before God. Every page drips with trenchant observations, amusing anecdotes, quotes from notable thinkers and philosophers (Carl Jung among them) and quotes from the Bible (using the wonderfully direct and earthy translation from "The Message").

"Posers, Fakes & Wannabes" is so full of wisdom, humor, and "Big Ideas", I found myself savoring the opportunity to spend time with this book, reading, and rereading many passages, thinking about my own life and about God.

And, no, this book is not "heady stuff" for academics. Written in plain spoken prose, this book is appropriate for anyone, from teenagers to geezers.

A must-have for "the seekers" among us.

4 out of 5 stars Manning focuses on what's real, and what's an act........2004-05-08

If you have even a passing interest in Christianity, but struggle to know what to do with the often conflicting behaviors exhibited by many who claim to all be following the same basic belief system, then this book is an excellent look at what it could and should be. How is it that the message of the Gospel is often acted out on a stage for the benefit of our own ego?

Brennan Manning has an uncanny ability to sift through the surface, and dive straight into the places we often do not want to acknowledge exist within all of us. In this book he tackles the "image conscious" Christian, more concerned with how they look, than what they are doing. In it he exposes just how far off the message of love and peace we have often gone. With all of our masks, pettiness, vanity and ego we consume ourselves with, where is our focus on our true cause; to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves?

Of particular interest is how he manages to be blunt and direct in many very personal ways, yet all in his usual self effacing style which leaves one motivated not judged. When reading Manning, one is left with the overwhelming sense that they are simply in a conversation with someone who is speaking on their level. While I know a few too distracted with dogma and doctrine to understand his perspective, he writes about the very real struggle to let go of ego and image, and focus on what is really important. His looks into the problems of racism, homophobia, and neglect of the poor among Christians are especially powerful considering they contrast so much with loving and reaching out to others as Jesus did.

Although the editing and copy itself is at times a bit distracting with its multi-type fonts on every page, it does allow you to take bite sized bits of information and ponder the meaning behind it. Rarely have I stopped so many times while reading to reflect on my own issues. An excellent read and good insights!

You just over heard some gossip about a person that you know! Do you spread the gossip some more? If you think you might, then this might be the book for you!
Alicia Riveria is tired of being Massie Block's beta and always being the second choice or second hottest - so she decides to start a clique of her own. Well once Massie finds this out, she goes ballistic! With the race between the two, to tell who's the hottest or who's better, the girls realize that they loose the most important thing that they had. Friendship.
The best part of the book was the climax when all the gossip between the girls, exploded and revealed itself, through a cat fight. Then when they're told to stop, they stat to laugh about the whole scene and then become friends again! It's a happy ending.
As the reviewer of this book, I would say the main idea is that friendship s more important than popularity or attention `cause being popular has lots of responsibilities, but friendship involves just being yourself.
I liked the way this book switched from all the girls' different perspectives and they talked about their true feelings in their perspectives. What I would change about this book is the drama. There seems to be too much drama between the girls that the book doesn't quite, then, seem completely real, but yet its still very interesting. I would recommend this book to teenage girls between the ages 12-18, because it can help anyone of them, realize how important friendship really is and how unimportant being popular is. Overall this book is very good and I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars the clique revenge of the wanabes.......2007-05-23

I absolutley loved this book so much! There are many things that go wrong though. The girls think that nothing could go wrong between their strong friendships, until one day it all falls apart. Alicia was hanging out with Olivia way to much. The other girls knew that there wasn't enought room for her in their clique. Alicia had to make a decision to whether or not to stay with the clique, who had been her best friends forever, or stay with her new bestfriend Olivia. The clique planned a mean revenge for Alicia to make her want to change her mind about being best friends with Olivia, who was a "loser beyond repair," and not "the pretty committee."

When i was reading this book i could not put it down for one second. There was so much action going on it was really hard to put it down. The book was definitely, without a doubt in my mind a page turner. This book shows real life situations. I can relate to almost everything that happens in this book. This book is a great book for girls who are going into middle school, or who are in middle school

5 out of 5 stars Revenge of the Wannabes Review.......2007-05-06

When Alicia Rivera cheats by switching ballad boxes at the OCD fashion design with her partner Olivia, Massie Block her former best friend decides she needs to get revenge. After dance rehearsal Alicia talked to some of the girls decided she needs make other friends too other than Massie. They convinced her to hold Friday night sleepovers, even though Massie always invites her popular friends over every Friday. When she finds out she is furious and decides she doesn't want Alicia to hangout with them anymore. When Alicia and Olivia go to the Teen People Interview for winning the contest, the lady there asks them if they want to model for the magazine instead. They agree and she said they are able to bring six other friends. When Massie hears this she calls the lady and tells them that they will be the others. In the end the go to the photo shoot and it turns out a total disaster because they all get into a fight, but after that the make up and are good friends again. The Revenge of the Wannabes is a funny, interesting novel I would definitely recommend.

One of the reasons I liked this novel is because it is easy to understand and keep interest in. The story dealt real life situations that happen to teen's everyday like friendships, crushes, and popularity. Such as Alicia being tired of being pushed around by Massie, wanting to be more popular, and have other friends. Also Clair who is kind of new to Westchester and lives in Massie's guesthouse is just starting to feel popular and Massie's friend.

Another thing I liked is the characters and how they acted. Alicia Rivera wanted to be independent and more popular yet she still wanted to be exactly like Massie. She did similar things like Friday night sleepover, start her own clique, and even find look alike new best friends. Also I liked the Teen People fashion editor, Lucinda because she didn't care and was cool about everything even when she found out Olivia and Alicia cheated. She always made sure everybody and there outfits look perfect. There is also Massie, who very popular and used to getting everything she wants.

Lastly, I liked this book because of the unique well written plot. The book is mostly about revenge for Massie to get back at Alicia for starting her own clique and cheating on the fashion contest. At one point in the book Massie and her friends painted a mural describing Alicia's backstabbing then showed it to her that sent her sobbing out the door. There were several twists and unexpected parts such as when Clair is accepted into the clique and Alicia has Todd, Clair's younger brother, spy on Massie's sleepover.

Revenge of the Wannabes is a wonderful book that I would highly recommend. It was fun to read about events that I could relate too such as the drama that happens to normal teenagers. Also I liked the characters such as Kristen, who doesn't have very much money is still really good friends with the popular girls in school, and they have kept her secret for a long time. The reader will have fun trying to imagine what it would be like to be in the position of people in the book such as how Massie felt when she found out Alicia backstabbed her.

5 out of 5 stars there coming for revenge.......2007-04-05

The characters of Revenge Of The Wannabes are Clair Lyons, Kristen Gregory, Dylan Marvil, Alicia Rivera, Massie Block and Oliva. Massie Block is the most popular girl at school but Alicia want's to be more popular then her, so Alicia and the other girls at the dance studio starting talking about the sleepover that Massie Block always has and they came up with an idea that Alicia should have a sleepover of her own. so when Alicia got home she thought about it for a while. She went up to her room and checked her messages on her phone and she had messages from her dance studio friends and from Massie and those group of friends. Alicia was really confused she didn't know if she should have her own sleepover or go to Massie's. Later in the book it was a Teen People design contest Massie really won but before judging Alicia and Oliva changed the vote boxes so the 2 girls went to Teen People and they got to see all of the latest clothes and even got to take something home.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite!.......2007-03-30

Alicia had cheated in the OCD fashion contest and now Massie feels that the revenge is long past due, and she will stop at nothing to crush Alicia's perfect record. After dance rehearsal Alicia was talking to the other girls and decided that there was too much "Massie" in her life, and the other girls talked her into starting sleepovers on Friday night. Massie owned Fridays and that course of action was not an option, but she could not refuse the wide eyes staring in on her. As the day of her Teen People magazine interview grew closer Alicia continued to wonder if Massie knew what she and Olivia had done, but when the day of the interview came and Massie still did not say anything she thought that she was in the clear, but in truth Massie knew exactly what had happened. Then Massie found out that at the magazine interview Alicia and Olivia had been offered a modeling job, Massie decided to tell the people that Alicia was lying, but when she did all the people said was that they did not even care. Massie was so mad at Alicia that she invited her over and she had a mural of her on the wall and explained its contents to Alicia and sent her running out. Then one day at a Briarwood soccer game Cam convinced Alicia to ask Claire out for him. Alicia told Claire the news and said that they should go on a double date and Claire agreed to go. While they were there Alicia had Todd spy on Massie's sleepover. The next day Alicia said that unless they where a scarf showing that they were in her group she would tell everyone their secrets. They all wore the scarves and they all went with Alicia to the shoot and there they all got in a fight after breaking down from all the pressure that had been building up during the past month. After that situation they became friends again and Claire was admitted to the Pretty Committee. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys gossip and tough social situations.

I enjoyed this book because it depicted how cliques and popularity affect social structure and how people act. At the beginning Alicia wanted to have her own sleepover and be the leader of a group, but Massie completely rejected the idea because she thought that people would like Alicia more than they liked her. Another time was when Alicia found out all of her ex-friends' secrets and she used that as leverage to get them to see things from her point of view. Another point was at the very end when everyone let out the anger built up inside of him or her and they started fighting. The fight was Massie's friends versus Alicia's friend and finally at the end they made up and continued the photo shoot for Teen People.

The book details the life of the Clique over the course of about one month and it is amazing how people changed and stayed the same. Kendra, Massie's mother, was always very strict about keeping everything clean and perfect, but after she started reading with a book club she started to .et go and was not as strict. She even let the girls paint the old horse barn. Another person that changed was Claire, because at the beginning she was quietly in love with Cam, but was never confident enough to really go out with him. After he did, though, she really liked it and found another thing to like in Westchester. Finally it was Massie who changed the most. In the beginning she was always rude and jealous towards Claire because she had a crush on Cam as well, so she was always telling Claire to break up with Cam because she was always so mad that someone had beaten her at something. In the end she allowed Claire to go out with Cam and she developed a crush on Derrington.

Another thing that I appreciated in this book were the different characters and how they acted. I especially liked Lucinda, the editor for Teen People because she did not care too much about anything or even that Olivia and Alicia had cheated in the contest, but she did care about how the other people dressed around her as well as her clients. Another character was Alicia Rivera and she was tired of sitting in Massie's shadow and decided to be independent and start her own group. Of course there is Massie Block, and she is an ambitious seventh grader that is used to everything going her way and getting all she wanted.

This was on of my favorite books because of the characters like Kristen, a girl who does not have very much money and yet has still made friends with the most popular girls in school, and has kept her secret over the years. I also liked this book because of how the characters changed through the progression of the story. I also liked this book because it shows how popularity really does control our life. I recommend this book to anyone that can really relate to the situations in the book.

4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-05-27

I enjoyed the TPB, was a little confusing at first, but got the hang of it and found it quite interesting and unique. I love the character X-23 she is an assasin but not as bad as you would think. The story is not centered around her, it is centered around these teenagers that discover their powers and have to deal with a few life issue at the same time. Different from the other x-men stories that I have read. Oh and there are no x-men in this story.

"A well researched, thought provoking and ultimately convincing narrative that explores why hip-hop has had such a lasting impact on youth culture."(Time Out New York)

"Bakari Kitwana has provided a myth-busting, stereotype-shattering, paradigm-shifting examination of the complex relationship between white youth and black popular culture. Eschewing tired clichŽs, refusing racial pieties, and resisting old habits of thought, Kitwana clears a brilliant path to fresh insight." (Michael Eric Dyson, author of Is Bill Cosby Right?)

In a provocative book that will appeal to hip-hoppers both black and white and their parents, Bakari Kitwana deftly teases apart the culture of hip hop to illuminate how race is being lived by young Americans. I thought the book was very interesting. It made you want to keep reading. This book was my favorite so far in the series but it left you hanging in the end I can't wait til I get to read the next one. Lisi Harrison is a great writer for teens.

    5 out of 5 stars Sealed with a Diss.......2007-09-10

This book was absolutley fabulous. I love how Lisi Harrison keeps you on the edge and anticipating the next word (or in Massie's case, a clever comeback!) These books are fun filled and action packed, a great read for anyone 10 or older. I recomend this series to everyone, and I cannot wait for the next book!

4 out of 5 stars More More MORE!.......2007-08-17

I loved this book, but I hated the fact that it ended like it did and the next one doesn't come out til next year. That sux! But the book itself was )as most cliques are) drama filled and intense. The life of an alpha is so not as great as it seems. And the poor girls and their crushes I mean you have GOT to feel sorry for them.

This story takes you on a journey that ended quite abrubtly, and will begin again in February 2008!!! Man I can't wait!!!!!♥

    5 out of 5 stars Another ah-mazing Clique book!.......2007-08-06

I have really enjoyed ALL of the books in the Clique series. I am a middle school teacher, and have shared my love of reading with many girls via the Clique books. These books are perfect for a hesistant reader- they are so engaging and fun to read. They are also age-appropriate, unlike some other series that are marketed to young girls.
Massie and the Pretty Committee do not disappoint in the 8th book of this series. The dialog is snappy as always, and left me looking forward to the 9th book!

    5 out of 5 stars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-30

this is my favorite book out of the clique series so far. i'm not going to tell you what happened but it's a real cliff hanger. anyway it's a great book and i gaurantee that you won't want to put the book down.

    4 out of 5 stars A fun book........2007-08-12

I really enjoyed reading about Jamie Kennedy trying to make it in Hollywood, it was years of humiliating jobs, and lots of money down the drain on get famous quick scams, but he clawed his way to the middle, and planted his flag.

I have to admit, I wonder how truthful some of his stories really are, but I'm sure he told it as he really remembered it. I really admire him for having a dream, and making it happen.

He also spins some funny stories about his encounters with celebrities, my favorite was when he was working at Red Lobster, and Arsenio Hall came in, at first he didn't recognize him, and told him there were no tables available, and then recognized him, and got really excited, and then Arsenio asked if he had a table for him now, and Jamie said, "no". Funny stuff, definately worth a read.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-03-09

Outstanding! What a life he has had so far. This book is not only hilarious, but it makes you believe that nothing is impossible no matter how many times you get knocked down.

    5 out of 5 stars Y'all betta recognize..........2006-10-10

Jamie Kennedy's show is what I know him best by. I'm so glad he wrote this book and gave us a little inside of his life. He's such an honest, and open book. What a fascinating character he is, in everything he does. I actually tend to look up to him and base my actions on him and others like him, never being afraid to show my inner self (read my profile here at Amazon if you don't believe me). Life is too short, and if you don't reach out and take Life, it won't be taken. That seems to be his "take on life."

I highly recommend this book and this lifestyle. It will truly rock your world!

This is must-read for Jamie Kennedy fans. I haven't finished reading this book yet,but I love it already!! He knows how to tell a story and he's good at expressing himself.....that's why I love him so much!! If you're interested in Jamie Kennedy and his career, you should buy and read it. It's very worth looking and reading. It's highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars This "experiment" is a success!!!.......2005-07-13

Sharp, funny, witty, self deprecating, insightful, poignant & honest!

Jamie Kennedy's "Wannabe" is all these things and more.

A must read for anyone interested in the classic Hollywood struggle for fame and recognition; or just anyone interested in the journey of a young man trying to figure out what the hell he wants to do with his life and how the heck to get there!

Jamie Kennedy's struggle for success will no doubt touch the reader with his wacky stories of trying to "make it" as well as his off the wall "celebrity encounters" and "brushes with death"! I couldn't put this book down, and had to slow down my reading just to finish it in 2 days.

Jamie Kennedy should be considered a role model to his peers and the up and comers out there. His advice in the bonus chapter of the book is solid and wise for his years. Ultimately inspiring, Jamie Kennedy's memoir serves as a valuable lesson of the true power of drive, determination, and persistence.

A fantastic read & highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Best, most thorough bartending book on the market........2007-03-22

Cheryl Charming has put a lot of experience into the writing of this book, and it shows. It covers pretty much everything you need to know to get started as a bartender and has a lot of useful information that more experienced bartenders can learn from. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who currently tends bar or wants to. The only thing that kept this review from being 5 stars is that there is very little information about how to prepare for private parties. Bartending For Dummies (For Dummies (Cooking)) has thorough information on this aspect, for those interested. As a side note, Miss Charming is easy to contact and very hepful if you have questions! Between this book, her website and her willingness to help, I was able to break into bartending and am extremely appreciative of her taking the time to help out her fellow bartenders. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A simple cocktail book...and the complexity of publishing it........2007-03-02

This review is, unfortunately, one of those good news/bad news affairs. The good news: This is a book well worth owning. It contains excellent guidance, stories (parables, really) both entertaining and subtly moving bartenders and home mixologists alike toward a greater grasp of the "beingness" of bartending - from an author who speaks eloquent Bartenderese.

Cheryl Charming, beginning with her name, continuing with the cartoony light touch of her previous fare, and concluding with publishing deals that emphasized those characteristics, has rarely been taken seriously among the cocktail elite. Her advice to bartenders less seasoned than she is puts the lie to that appraisal in this book. Ask any attendee of the [...] forums if you doubt it. Cheryl Charming is wise. Nonetheless, that was the legacy Ms Charming was tarred with previous to this book.

Here, the years of experience behind the mahogany are brought to bear. The book is packed with the aforementioned stories, charts, tables, and a plethora of useful aids to working bartenders and novices who want to grasp that distinctly social/functional headset. The up-to-date specific gravities of liqueurs (allowing the construction of numbers of perfect Pousse Cafés) and the unprecedented coverage of the largely ignored 1970s as relate to cocktails...these alone are worth the exceedingly affordable price of the book.

Cheryl sent me an early draft of "Miss Charming's Guide for Hip Bartenders and Wayout Wannabes" for fact checking. I raved. It was a superb look at bartending from the trenches. It cast a broad light on the vastly neglected (even by me) 1970s-80s era of cocktails. It voiced its offerings in a magically odd combination of honesty, humor, cynicism, and energy that only comes of living the life. I was immediately fatuous.

Much of this tone remains in the current work. It is still a tome well worth owning....no thanks to Cheryl Charming's editors and publishers. She was offered a hardback deal; a chance to visually transcend the past works that emphasized the playful frivolities of cocktails at the expense of their incredibly gourmet high end. In the final tally, (and for legal reasons here I must state it is an opinion...MY opinion) they screwed her. Crappy paper, soft-back, a vastly concatenated word count.....this was not, after all, the book that would show the world what an amazing point of view Ms Charming could offer. In short, they were nitwits, requiring massive text cuts, cutting singularly unique perspectives and marketing the book in exactly the same vein as any silly joke book. It is a shame. Note well....I only know this from the advantage I had in viewing an early draft and advising on factual elements. The book you are offered, as I indicated above, is entirely worth its price and worthy of any cocktail library.

If publishing companies were not such dolts, though, it would've been a better book for which you would've (appropriately) paid substantially more money. Buy the book, it remains worth it, but be contemptuous of the publishing company for their lack of vision.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-02-24

So I am both a bartender and an voracious reader/collector of books on my chosen profession and I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Written in an enagaging style it would benefit and educate both the newbie bartender as well as the 'old hand'.
Aimed towards the professional rather than the amateur it has the challenge of 'teaching' perhaps the biggest groups of know-it-alls on the planet and it succeeds admirably. That is not to say that the keen home 'shaker-upper' of drinks should not have it at home too as it provides both useful tips for them in their endeavours and insights into the murky world of the 'Pro'.
A great read, a useful tool and (groan) a fantastic cocktail of stories, facts and ideas at the sharp end of our industry. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on bartending.......2007-02-10

Cheryl's book is a fantastic tool not only for the neophytes, but also for those who have been bartending for years, rich of informations and useful suggestions very hard to find on any other books. Definitely the best book on bartending I have ever read. Higly recommended .

Miss Charming's books are always fascinating but this book will blow you away. I have a whole new respect for "great" bartenders. The knowledge, multi-tasking skills great bartenders possess are sure to add 100's of dollars to your tip jar every night. I learned so much about liquor...history, weights, origin, who drinks it, what movie it was featured in......it goes on and on. You will KNOW what makes your customer happy and willing to fork over the tips in return. Attention to details....they are in here!! Get this book. If you are a history buff or a bartender looking for that extra something that will make you "The Special One" at your bar....you must read this book cover to cover and then just sit back and watch your regulars come in week after week. Book Description

In this bold bombshell of a book, Bakari Kitwana argues that hip hop has broken down more racial barriers than any other social development of the past three decades.

Our national conversation about race is ludicrously out of date. Hip hop is the key to understanding how things are changing. In a provocative book that will appeal to hip hoppers both black and white and their parents, Bakari Kitwana deftly teases apart the culture of hip hop to illuminate how race is being lived by young Americans. This topic is ripe, but untried, and there is a plethora of questions that he is the first to articulate.
      * Does hip hop belong to black kids?
      * What in hip hop appeals to white youth?
      * Is hip hop different from rhythm, blues, jazz, and even rock 'n' roll for previous generations?
      * How have mass media and consumer culture made hip hop a unique phenomenon?
      * What does class have to do with it?
      * Can a culture belong to a race in the first place?
How do young Americans think about race, and how has hip hop influenced their perspective?
      * Are young Americans achieving Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream through hip hop?

Kitwana addresses uncomfortable truths about America's level of comfort with black people, challenging preconceived notions of race. With this brave tour de force, Bakari Kitwana takes his place alongside the greatest African American intellectuals of the past decades.

4 out of 5 stars response to lack of culture.......2006-08-13

You're an idiot. It would literally take me 3 days to write about how wrong you are. So instead I'll paraphrase for your simple, narrow mind.

To say that hip hop is all about blaming whitey over a congo beat might be the most ignorant thing I have ever heard. HIP HOP is a culture, RAP is a genre of music. You are referring to RAP, not hip hop. But even then, not all RAP is what you are describing. Also, if it was, what is wrong with blaming Whitey? You mean to tell me that artists shouldn't use music as a medium to spread a message? Was N.W.A wrong for telling the world about the aubsive LAPD in the late 80's/early 90's? Any way, I doubt you actually read the book, and if you did, your mind obviously is incapable of accepting black people outside of some bubble you have put them in. Grow up, wise up and get a clue.

      You're an idiot.

1 out of 5 stars Lack of Culture.......2006-07-05

Why do some white kids like hip hop? probably the same reasons why children have tried to shock their parents for ages. Hip hop (what a name)is the product of cultural nihilism, a direct result of the black underclass which seeks to return to the "good old days" of blaming whitey. After all it's whitey who told us are BAD-so Bad we will act.
So there you have it, instead of Black Americans working hard to become successful, many prefer to follow a congo beat while fondling their fake bling-bling while watching underclothed women gyrate their rotund bodies.
Those writers who claim that hip-hop is another culture whites want to steal are delusional at best. When I'm stopped at a stoplight and the car next to me is shaking with a loud bass, all I can think of is: "thank God I lack their culture"!
But let's think about this! Remember the days when the world "culture" actually meant something. If one studies the culture of the Greeks or Romans we see a the long history of a particular society. A history built on art, language, law, philosophy, religion, music, architecture and myth. Hilarious enough, the so-called hiphop culture began with a myth:"the myth that poor latinos and blacks created hiphop out of nothing: (this was a direct quote from a misguided latina at an education conference at UNC.
And the myth continues, according to another site, the author claims that hiphop is instrumental in making social/cultural changes in the larger society.
A recent hiphop conference (pretending to be a political entity) presented the (world),or at least their "hood" with a list of demands, including full reparations for blacks, free education, free health care, all in a beligerant and hostile "gimme" tone.
The angry person who referred to me as an idiot may need to remember the words of the rapper Tony Yayo who raps:" I'm in that brand new range:when I pull up, kid, I turn your brains into red concrete stains." I ask you-and others-is this a culture-or is it verbal poison?

4 out of 5 stars An Original Look at Hip-Hop and Whiteness.......2005-10-13

Why White Kids Love Hip Hop by Bakari Kitwana is a very well-written book which discusses why white kids, even upper-middle class and upper-class ones, love hip hop, specifically its musical component. I believe Bakari Kitwana puts a completely new spin on this question due to his clear enjoyment and understanding of hip-hop. He is able to look at hip-hop with less prejudice than many authors who have attempted to tackle this question. Kitwana uses convincing reasoning, such as whites' decreasing sense of racial privilege, and strong opinions to advance his arguments on why white kids love hip-hop.
I recommend this eloquent book to any hip-hop enthusiasts especially those interested in the question "why do white kids love hip-hop?" Not to say that this book is by any means perfect, Kitwana has his own unique set of prejudices like anyone and he has a tendency to belittle the work of some less hardcore hip-hop fans. Overall it is a wonderful book, a true must-read in my opinion. This is an adult book but it is not terribly long or difficult to read and while it does feature some necessary racial epithets it doesn't uselessly throw around foul language. A great book for the avid hip-hop listener or anyone who has ever wondered just why white kids love hip-hop.

1 out of 5 stars Why Authors Need Copyeditors.......2005-09-30

I think that the issue Kitwana attempts to explore in Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop is interesting. But his approach to taking on this topic was both sloppy and simplistic. It starts in the preface, where he says that the hip-hop generation (which in reality covers two generations) is the first one to grow up without experiencing de facto segregation. I'm sure that White suburbanites in Scarsdale and Orange County would be interested in knowing that there are phantom people of color floating around their communities.

Kitwana also overemphasizes the impact of hip-hop on the emergence of African Americans in popular culture and their impact on young Whites during the 1980s and 1990s. He concentrates so much on Michael Jordan and his first Nike ads with Spike Lee that he forgets about Dr. J, Mean Joe Green, and a host of others that paved the road for Jordan in the first place.

But Kitwana's biggest error is in glossing over the distance between Whites embracing hip-hop culture and Whites living anti-racist, social justice oriented lives. Like John Tuturro's character in Do the Right Thing, there are at least as many Whites who are hip-hop lovers but have as stereotypical an opinion of Blacks and other people of color as Whites who listen to honky-tonk. I don't that everything Kitwana says in Why White Kids Love Hip Hop is incorrect -- his book is just selectively incomplete.

1 out of 5 stars No substance, No evidence, Not much fun.......2005-09-24

*sigh*... I'm always on the lookout for books about hip-hop (as a music form, culture, and generation) as it relates to American culture. More specifically, I'm interested in the social ramifications of the culture as a whole. Thus, when I was given this book by a friend, I was hoping for a good social science read. Unfortunately, I was highly dismayed, finding this particular selection to be a sloppily written manuscript with virtually no empirical evidence anywhere.

For much of this book, the author makes vague statements which are supposed to be evidence (I.E. - "First and foremost among the reasons white kids love hip-hop is the growing sense of alienation from mainstream American life they experienced in the 1980s") but then makes little or no effort to show proof of such theories. This is discouraging.

What makes matters worse is that the author later goes on to dismiss the limited evidence that does exist showing whites are the dominant purchasers of hip-hop albums, and instead of inserting evidence which shows otherwise, he launches into page upon page of bizarre hypothesis' for potential ways blacks might still be the majority purchasers (ironically mentioning bootleg CDs). Ultimately I grew tired of reading his writing which became increasingly less academic.

His "expert" sources are also questionable - while at times he does move towards legitmate figures in the hip-hop community - I felt he vastly stretched for some of the opinions gathered for this book. For instance, I seriously wonder whether it was wise to include a very long section on a 19 year-old white female for who "hip-hop has been mainstream culture" for her entire life. Her priciple credits for being mentioned appear to be that she once dated a black guy, doesn't mind the b-word, and got hooked on hip-hop when she heard "Hypnotize" while developing film. I was not impressed.

If you are looking for an actual intelligent and informed book on hip-hop, please look elsewhere. Reading this, you'll mainly come away with disjointed personal theories of the author, as well as numerous plugs for THE SOURCE magazine.
