Book Description

Wyoming Territory, 1868:

Elizabeth Coyote will do anything, anything at all, to save the ranch she loves, including marrying Asa MacIntyre, a broad shouldered, lean hipped silver eyed gunslinger with a ruthless reputation for getting the job done. No one expects Asa to hang around past the first bank draft, but Asa has always wanted a place of his own, a lady for a wife, and the respect that comes with both. Marrying Elizabeth may have started out as a means to an end, but nothing in his wildest dreams could have prepared him for the fun he'd have unleashing the purely carnal woman beneath his wife's prim and proper exterior.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, sexy twist on a Western.......2007-10-09

Decent plot and story for Erotica. Interesting characters makes for a nice, sexy twist on the Western and historical fiction genre!

4 out of 5 stars Overrated but still a great read.......2007-08-07

I picked up this book based on rave reviews and countless recommendations. I can't say I was disappointed, but I will say Promises Linger isn't "the best book out there", as I was told so many times. Asa and Elizabeth are great, complex characters, but they might have been a little too complex for my taste. I was a little upset that we didn't have more background on either character, especially Asa. He is supposedly a feared gunslinger, but we don't learn about any of his gun-for-hire work. He is so peaceful and in charge, and he falls so easily into the ranching role that the gunslinger background feels very unsupported.

Also, I felt that the crude sex scenes and foul language really took away from the sweet love story. Granted, it is "erotic romance", but the erotica conflicted with the romance so badly that it felt like I was reading bits and pieces of two different novels--a sweet old-fashioned love story and a cheap porno. Even now as I type my review, I can't shake the feeling that I really did read two separate books. It was just too choppy and artificial for me to feel that the two aspects merged together effectively. I can't really explain exactly how this book differs from other (better) erotica, but in Promises Linger the rough language and crude sexual terms cheapen the story and detract from the tenderness between Asa and Elizabeth. It just doesn't feel natural.

All in all--despite my pickiness--it is a great story. Just read it for entertainment and I'm sure you'll love it.

If you want a smoother, steamier blend of hot sex and romance, try Bareback by Chris Owen (M/M). You won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!!.......2007-06-01

Elizabeth Coyote will do anything to save the ranch that has been in her family for generations. After marrying a man that beats her on her wedding night, Elizabeth knows she has to take drastic action. Confronting the man in the town saloon may not have been one of her best ideas, but Elizabeth was desperate. The only thing she was thankful for was that the marriage wasn't consummated, so it wasn't considered legal. She soon sets her sights on another man whom she feels will be better for her and for the ranch.

Asa MacIntyre has always wanted the respectability that came with having a lady for a wife. Knowing that this may be his big chance, Asa can't turn down Elizabeth's offer. When he soon finds himself falling for his wife, Asa counts that as a lucky bonus. Soon he is fighting to keep the ranch that his wife so loves and with a jealousy that is foreign to his nature.

Promises Linger is an amazing book. Taking place in Wyoming in 1868, you can just feel the helplessness that Elizabeth feels while trying to save her ranch. Trying to overcome a terrible tragedy in her childhood, Elizabeth wants nothing more than to have her husband care about her the same way she cares about him. The relationship that develops between these two is truly heart warming. A marriage of convenience soon turns into so much more. Prissy Elizabeth finds herself matched up to a man that is more than capable of taking care of her and their ranch. I did dislike something about the ending, but don't want to give it away. It just didn't seem to fit.

I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series!

3 out of 5 stars Contradicting at Times, But Okay.......2007-03-20

I really liked the hero in this book Asa and to me it is easy to understand where he is coming from and what makes him tick. He is a "for-hire" gunslinger who dreams of one day having his own ranch, a wife and kids, basically he is striving for respectability and belonging. He has been saving his money for years but when Elizabeth "Elly" storms into a saloon and offers him the chance to marry her and inherit her sprawling ranch he jumps at the chance. Not only is he thrilled about the ranch, he is intrigued by Elly.

Elly storms into the saloon and informs Brent, the man she married the day before, that their marriage is not valid because not only was it not consummated but the person who performed it was not a real preacher. Brent beat her up and took the money intended to pay her ranchhands to gamble with. Elly confronts him with a gun and retrieves the money. She will do anything to save her ranch and when her foreman suggests she marry Asa, she puts herself up for marriage. Elly was often beaten by her father for failing to live up to his expectations so she is afraid of men but she will make the sacrifice to save her beloved ranch. She soon finds that not only does she tolerate his touch she craves it and finds herself falling for him. Asa realizes he has married a sensual woman with a demanding sexual appetite and soon he is falling in love with his new wife.

To me Elly was a contradiction and at times her reasoning left me confused. For instance, she believes she must do everything lady like in wearing corsets and keeping her hair in a bun to a point of extremeness...but then, she argues that she ought to be able to run the ranch, it isn't fair for the ranching community to be partial to men. I don't know what it is exactly, but sometimes I just didn't like her. She seemed too hard on Asa who does nothing but try to please her the whole book. Otherwise, it is a steamy sensual book and has potential, for me it was just character flaws that kept it from being great.

5 out of 5 stars Momma's DO let your babies grow up to be cowboy's.......2006-02-19

This is one book I will be keeping on the nightstand and Asa will have a place in my dreams for some time. While this is considered erotic romance, it is not over the top like some I have been subjected to. Asa is tender and patient in his "courting". It is touching, romantic and completely engrossing as you see the relationship grow. This book made me wish for the old days for sure.

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A bit of a change of pace, here. There is a major focus on a character in a town that it turns out is harboring Raven, who is doing some organlegging, and also Darling.

Plenty of the usual undead wizard nastiness, as well. There is basically part of the two camps of wizards storyline, as an attempt is made to bring back The Dominator (again). Yet another L v D epic.

Needless to say, there is a battle, and why a career in the Company is maybe not that great an idea.

5 out of 5 stars eat your heart out, Steven Erikson. This is the way to tell a story!.......2007-03-25

After the glory that was The Black Company, I expected more of the the same from Glen Cook in Shadows Linger: soldiers on the move, lots of bleak gallows humor, a desperate hunt and doublecrossing with The Lady's Soultaken, and lots of interaction between the various members of The Company. In short, a near carbon copy of the first book, only with a slightly different objective. Like, what so much of fantasy seems to be. Shadows Linger is NOT that book. At all. Shadows Linger is something else entirely.

The story here is two fold. First (or second, actually) is that of Croaker and a small band of the Company sent to distant Juniper to discover a way to combat the threat of The Dominator that is cropping up there. Croaker, the Annalist of the Company, has serious doubts of the Company betraying its morality by following The Lady. He also knows something that can get him killed and the Company destroyed: Darling, the girl Raven rescued in The Black Company - she is the reincarnation of the White Rose, the enemy of The Lady.

The second aspect of the story is that of Marron Shed, a innkeeper in Juniper trying to get out of debt and who knows a man named Raven and a girl named Darling who is working at his inn. Marron Shed's story, which should have no connection at all to what we think The Company is all about, but is an interesting story about the changing morality of a desperate man. Through Shed we see what Raven is up to and how Raven is still working to get as far away from The Company and The Lady as possible.

These two stories weave together in alternating chapters that reveal more about the world of The Company and the threats The Lady faces, about The Dominator, about the Company and its history, about The White Rose, and about the threat The Lady poses to The Company.

With characters like Croaker, Raven, Marron Shed, Goblin, and One Eye Glen Cook delivers a powerful tour de force of a novel. Shadows Linger is no less a powerful work of fantastic fiction than The Black Company is. This is high praise indeed because The Black Company was one of the more outstanding works of military fantasy out there. Shadows Linger takes the series, even only at the second volume, in an entirely new and unexpected direction. The direction it takes, however, is a wondrous one and one which shows the range of Glen Cook as a creative force. In a series which could easily be the same novel after the same, Glen Cook has already shown that he is willing to pick apart The Company and his characters and that the only driving force is to tell a good story.

He tells a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and Engaging Fantasy.......2006-12-15

Wow, after not having read fantasy for years due to endless descriptions of everything and everyone, good and evil, archetypes, heroes and villians, I lucked out when I randomly picked up this book. It's an awesome read. Cook doesn't bother with much explicit description; he leaves it all to show, which he does with an economy of words that keeps focus on the white-hot story. The climax had me leaning out of my seat, which almost never happens these days - sadly - since I've read so many frigging books. With casualties galore I had no pre-conceived notion of the outcome.

I also really enjoyed the easy use of names. No apostrophe-ridden tongue twisters. No olde English, German, or nominal languages. No foreign language content at all. Here are the character names: Croaker, Goblin, the Lady, the Dominator, the Limper, Whisper, Soulcatcher, Elmo, the Captain, the Lieutenant, Marron Shed, Asa, Lisa, Darling, Raven. You might say it's unimaginative, true, however the easy names frees the reader to enjoy the plot. I found them quite liberating.

As far as descriptions of actions: they were sparse. When damage to people was described it was far more effective.

Overall I'll be reading a lot more Glen Cook and actually am kicking myself for not reading more fantasy as he reminded me of how good it can be.

I have to comment on one of the reviewers giving it a 1 star.

One-star: "Instead we are treated to some guy who double-crosses his wife, some guys who steal urns from an underground cemetary and some mentions of the black company. It took 200 of the 300 pages to even mention the White Rose. After reading the disappointing first book in the series, I was hoping that this one would shed some light on what that first one was lacking. It just confused me more."

Eh, the White Rose was mentioned in the first pages as being the Rebel's motive. The Black Company was mentioned at the same time when Croaker and friends were wiping out rebs. No one double-crosses a wife in the entire book, so I have no idea where he got that. Yes there is a guy who steals urns from the underground cemetary (aka 'catacombs') and that guy is one of the main characters named Raven.

One-star: "There is absolutely not a single interesting or well-developed character in 'Shadows Linger'. At least the first had Croaker, but even he is cast aside as a second string character. The names flit right past the reader, without anything to hook the reader in. Perhaps the characters themselves are the 'Shadows' that 'Linger'... shadows that would be fortunate to be called one-dimensional."

Croaker was the first-person narrator for approximately half the book, and he was well-developed, not second-string. The other principles were Raven, Marron Shed, and Darling. As far as what's needed to hook the reader in, it would be the action involving the characters, their needs and desires and appeal. Cook is very light on physical descriptions, yet it's quite easy to imagine the characters through their actions and even just names. The description of the Lady was something along the lines of: "We'd gotten older but she was still beautiful. She'd always remain 20. Her hair was stunningly black, and men could melt into her eyes. She was a focus of such glamor it's beyond physical description, and describing her is useless anyway as this wasn't her real form but the one she chose." The rest of what the reader picks up of the Lady's image comes from people's comments on her, what she says and does, etc. On the eve of the big battle in the story, there's no hurrah speech BS, this is what she says: "The black castle is a hole in the bottom of the ship of the Empire. We must stop it now lest we sink." Bam - I love it!

One-star: "That aside, the story itself was just uninteresting. There's more plot development on the back cover blurb than there is in the actual novel. Some of the plot elements had absolutely no motivation behind them. It was as if Glen Cook was purposely leaving out details like "Why on earth are they doing this?"

Why on earth are they doing this? Plot: Mortal mercenaries begin to find their souls to the chagrin of their employer, the Lady, who can kill them with a thought. Around this central plot we have: A deserter from the Black Company wages a one-man campaign to save the reincarnation of the White Rose in the harshest of lands at the edge of the Empire. A wastrel bar owner redeems himself in life. The Lady battles her ex-spouse, the Dominator, in a fight to maintain control of the world.

No plot? Yeah, right. Just like the Black Company was never mentioned, the White Rose wasn't in the book till the end, someone double-crossed their wife. Uh-huh.

5 out of 5 stars Three Corpses to Go, Please..........2006-05-29

With the battle at Charm over, and the rebels in disarray, the lady responds to a request from the lord of Juniper, and sends the Black Company to investigate some strange events in that ancient city. A dark castle has risen up, and those who touch it quickly die. The Lady suspects the worst, and the Black Company is, once again, her pawn.

In the same city, Raven and Darling hide while Raven prepares to flee as far as he can from the Empire. Darling, the White Rose incarnate must hide from view until her time, when the comet crosses the sky again. Raven, and an innkeeper named Shed, gather the dead from Juniper's frozen streets and sell them to the dark castle. As they begin to mine the city for its corpses they trigger a series of events that will, inevitably bring the Black Company face to face with an evil even more dreadful than the Lady herself. The Dominator seeks to return, and in Juniper those loyal to him work at opening the door.

All the old characters (those that survived Charm) are back in this sequel. The viewpoint shifts from Croaker to third party depending on the part of the tale you're in. This isn't my favorite form of story telling, but it works here as Shadows Linger strikes the balance between the story of the Black Lady and the beginnings of the White Rose story arc. One Eye and Goblin continue their squabbles as comic relief, and, as always, the Fallen fly their carpets overhead.

It is surprising that, some 20 years after it was written, this series continues to strike the reader as something fresh and inventive. Glen Cook marked out a special ground where heroes and evil have no clear cut boundaries. The world hangs in the balance and dirty maneuvers in back alleys are just as important as desperate battles. Cook displays maturing writing skills enough to satisfy the most jaded reader.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book, decent sequel.......2006-05-26

This was a fun book to read. It introduces a couple of new far-from-perfect characters (shed and asa), and continues the previous novel's interesting depiction of fantasy as a competition of various less-than-angelic sides rather than a struggle between good and evil, as many fantasy novels do. Characterization was believable enough, and in the context of the style and content of the previous novel, it is hard to find fault with this one. Well-written and well worth the read. I do think the first novel in this series was much more enjoyable.

spoilers follow, including spoilers for 'the white rose' as well

That said, a few things seem worth comment (having just re-read this book)

1) dropping raven out of the novel half-way through was a bit annoying, though all raven does here in this story is sell corpses and kill people and THEN sell their corpses.
2) It seems clear that the Limper was considered murdered by the Lady at the end of this story.
3) even worse, raven having 2 faked deaths in one book is even more annoying. I honestly wonder if Cook had planned to leave either Limper or Raven dead after this story and then found it better not to when he wrote The White Rose.

1 out of 5 stars If you own a Bible, don't waste your money on this book!.......2005-10-06

I am quite surprised at the many positive reviews this book has received!

Yes, the book is very thorough, but unfortunately, not necessarily with things pertaining to the subject!
The first part of the book "Encounters with the World Next Door" consists of accounts of journeys to different countries - which he describes in quite some detail: "... we ventured into the true countryside. It was dusk, and small cooking fires were being kindled in the villages. There was just enough light to see the resigned, stubbled faces of old men hastening their camels with canes, ... In the distance, colorfully dressed women, their hair pulled into tidy ponytails, could be seen towing gaggles of children in from the field. Other weary villagers..." and so on and so forth (p.19). For all I can tell, these pages simply make for a thicker (and more costly!) volume.

After several pages of travel description, he reveals his method of encountering "the world next door": "For the first time I felt a twinge of foreboding. It was almost as though we had crossed an invisible border." (p.20). While I want to respect the author's feelings and forebodings, no one could seriously expect that they would fall under "thorough research" or means of determining spiritual truth.

In the next part "Illuminations from the Basement of Reality" he attempts to describe the devil himself, by means of quotes from people who have "encountered" him: "a stench of corruption", eyes gleaming "like polished copper cauldrons", "lecherous countenance" etc. (p.71). The author does not raise or attempt to answer the question why we are to believe that these individuals encountered the devil at all. Since there is no record of any of the individuals responding like the Bible suggests a person would respond when encountering the devil (see Job 41:9), I for myself will dismiss these accounts.

One thing that must be said in favor of this book is that he quotes many different authors. Yes, in that sense the book could be called "thorough". There is also a very thorough bibliography, an index and notes at the end (accounting for the last 100 (!) pages). One thing that I found noteworthy: while he indexes all his sources and quotes quite extensively, there is no index of the scripture verses used (he does use some!). I am assuming that reflects his attitude towards their importance on this subject. After all, consider that he has reached his view of the "otherworld" by extensive travel, by multiple interviews and by consulting many other authors.

If you are interested in the spiritual realm, I suggest you grab a Bible and a concordance to look up references on devil(s) and spirit(s). Your knowledge will be just as thorough as and much more reliable than what this author has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Opening the lid..........2005-07-27

This is a great book for opening the lid on a lot of what goes on around us. It is a good, solid, hype-free but passionate expose of the dark spiritual world. I bought it to make sense of the battle going on around my family in Japan and found the principles really helpful. Not only that but the Sentinel Trust have since been very willing to give assistance in out situation, just use the email from the website, not the book!

5 out of 5 stars Thorough Research and Explanation of a Complex Subject.......2004-03-05

I owe a huge debt to Dr. Otis for his research regarding this subject. The author launched his research to determine why spiritual darkness exists where it does. It is clear that territorial spirits are both real and Biblical. But, as believers we need to go a step further and understand why are they there and how can we seek God's guidance in overcoming their harmful effects.

Twilight Labyrinth is not a quick read. The early chapters provide an introduction and make the research relevant. The next third of the chapters discuss historical concepts, spiritual beliefs and psychological realities, pointing toward their cause and effect relationships. Finally, the book offers a summary of why darkness exists where it does based on Brother George's research.

This work requires effort and maturity on the part of the reader, however it offers a conclusion that should be understood by all church leaders. If you are ready for an indepth study into spiritual warfare, This book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Deeper Look Into Spiritual Warfare.......2003-05-15

I have read many books about spiritual warfare and this is the first that I have read that makes me have to take a break and gather my thoughts. It seriously makes you think and opens your eyes to many of the things of the spirit. I'm only on page 114 and I am blown away. Most spiritual warfare books only tell you what spirit does this and how it does that, but this book takes you to the core. Where did this spirit come from and HOW did it get that way? Where is the open door? It is excellent. This book also shows how the enemy works through animals. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book.......2003-01-28

George Otis's book is the most fascinating book I have ever read regarding spiritual warfare. It should be required reading for anybody involved in ministry work, including church elders. For me, it answered many questions about why things have happened in my own personal life as well as was a fascinating explanation to some of the studies I have done on Far Eastern religions. George Otis provides extensive footnotes at the end of the book which contain further explanation and anecdotes regarding his subject matter. I kept two bookmarks in this book as I was reading...one in the main area of the book and one at the footnotes so I could easily check out the further explanations and stories as I read along.

Book Description

These studies on the prophetic texts from the Hebrew Bible cover a wide range of topics, challenging the reader to confront the issues of faithfulness, responsibility, and justice in an ever-changing world. Brueggemann explores how these prophetic traditions have the potential to continually resonate in our contemporary communities and individual lives. Rather than dead words to kingdoms no longer in existence, the Israelite and Judean prophets have an enduring impact on how God challenges our values, our perspectives--and our very lives. Brueggemann has become well known for providing fresh perspective on ancient texts, always in conversation with great thinkers and people of faith.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Help for Homilies and Sermons.......2003-08-14

This book is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in Old Testament scripture. More than just interpreting and expanding, in these essays, Brueggemann brings certain passages into modern day use without violating the original context of the passage.

He demonstrates how the texts were used in recent times to support social justice issues. His clear understanding not only of the original biblical text but also of the modern day issues provide an excellent case study for anyone who fears that Old Testament prophetic writing is no longer "relevant".

I would recommend this not only for teachers and preachers, but for anyone who is strongly involved in social justice. It is not only educational and enlightening...it is inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Great interpretation of Biblical text can be dangerious!.......2001-01-22

Dr. Walter Brueggemann is the Albert Einstein of Old Testament Theology. As Einstein could look deep into the expanse of space and extrapolate insight and meaning so too does Brueggemann peer at the biblical text of the Old Testament prophets and give us social, political and spiritual insight. "Text that Linger, Words that Explode" is the second in a trilogy of academic and ecclesiastical essays ("Deep Memory, Exuberant Hope" and "The Covenanted Self").

Great interpretation of Biblical prophetic text can be dangerous and subversive to the existing status quo of society. That is why great interpretation of Biblical prophetic text is so rare today; as in the word's of many church leaders and the contemporary Jamaican prophet, Bob Marley, "don't rock'a my boat." Brueggemann has never quailed when speaking or writing, nor does he with these ancient texts. He finds power in the reading of the prophetic writings and brings us a contemporary application that will cause many readers to revive their image of God and reconsider their place in His world.

Make no mistake, this is not a spiritual feel good book, rather it is solid Biblical hermeneutics. In "Text that Linger, Words that Explode," Dr. Walter Brueggemann expounds on various scriptural text, mainly from the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah. Though every chapter has value, they will be uneven in interest according to your focus. If you are an Old Testament student or scholar then his promulgation regarding canon, authorship and historical context will appeal to you. If you are a teacher, a preacher or a lay person interested in studying the Old Testament prophets, then certain chapters will give you wonderful new insight more than other. Regardless, both Isaiah and Jeremiah and their exposés of the people of Judaism are given new life by Dr. Brueggemann. Recommended

Book Description

An old Indian legend states: "Never judge a person until you have walked a mile in his moccasins." Come, walk in the footsteps and share the excitement of the children from the coal fields in the Appalachian Mountains as they experience the fresh clean smell of an idyllic green carpeted plateau surrounded by lush evergreen trees which screened out the noise of traffic and gave one the feeling of living in a freshly washed world. The highly successful experimental camps established by the coal company in the 1930's after the Great Depression paved the way for the permanent camp located in the Big Bend of the Greenbrier River in southern WV. Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot was a very special place to the children from the coal mining towns. It was "OUR CAMP, BUILT ESPECIALLY FOR US" the children of coal miners. It made the "US" feel very special. Along with the good times, the shy, backward children from the coal fields, also learned the meaning of good fellowship and developed a healthy spirit of self expression and independence which ultimately changed their lives. To these children Camp Thomas E. Lightfoot, was truly something special, it was "almost heaven."

5 out of 5 stars Former Camper & Counselor.......2006-11-06

First let me preface by saying that I am extremely biased about the book, being a camper from 1968 through 1973 and a Junior Counselor in 1974. The book shares the history and activities experienced by thousands of kids and counselors through a summer camp sponsored by a coal company as a retention bonus for the miners'families. Miners' children were allowed the opportunity for a 2 week camp that based its activities on Indian Lore and wove character values in every possible method. The Director through my years at Camp TEL was Carl Mack. His wife, Kit, has woven all of the history and memories into this loving tribute to the man that believed in the legacy that Camp Lightfoot symbolized for all that was a part of this experience. This is a must-have for anyone that participated in the camp, and a definite should-have for anyone that wants to go back to a kinder, gentler lifestyle in which children's futures meant everything.

Book Description

The movement of Brazilians of Japanese descent to Japan is one of the most intriguing transnational migrations of recent years. In 1990, seeking a supply of ethnically acceptable unskilled workers, Japan permitted overseas Japanese, along with their spouses and children, to enter the country as long-term residents. The prospect of high salaries eventually drew about 200,000 nikkeis, as Brazilians of Japanese descent often call themselves, to Japan, making them Japan’s third-largest minority group.

No One Home is an ethnographic study, based on fieldwork and extensive personal interviews, of nikkeis living in Toyota City. The migrants’ dual identities coexist uneasily. The book focuses on how Brazilian factory workers and their children work through the problems arising from their ambiguous status. In Toyota City and environs, Brazilian men and women do hard, dirty, and dangerous physical labor in automobile-parts plants that supply Toyota Motors and other large automobile manufacturers. Japanese schools confront their children with an array of cultural, linguistic, educational, and personal obstacles. In the immediacies of the shop floor, classroom, and their leisure activities, nikkeis remake in Japan selves they had forged as citizens of Brazil, a process that is dynamic, varied, and unpredictable.

The book complements the recent literature on transnationalism in several important respects. While recognizing the influence of global economics and media, it emphasizes how transnationalism is lived. It highlights people’s experiences rather than the conditions of those experiences, and examines their senses of self rather than identity constructs. Instead of treating neighbors and interviewees as members of social categories, the author explores personal realms—the rich, complex, idiosyncratic selves nikkeis continually refashion during their sojourn in Japan. Overall, he underlines the significance of consciousness, experience, and biography for comprehensive studies of transnationalism and identity.

Daniel Touro Linger does an excellent job at examining the Japanese-Brazilian population in and around Aichi Prefecture, Japan. I do think, however, that the book contains too many full interviews of Japanese-Brazilians that basically state the same thing: That they, the Japanese-Brazilians, are Brazilian and not Japanese. (Japanese is only their ethnicity, not their nationality or cultural affiliation).
However, I did enjoy the book because of its original ideas and found it to be helpful in my understanding and current research of the dekasegi phenomenon in Japan.

    Book Description

Les Holmes was deter-mined to bring closure to Canada's most horrifying serial killer case to date, but shadows still lingered. To his surprise, he found an ex-RCMP member who had fingered Olson weeks before his arrest. Five more teenagers died in the mean-time.

RCMP Superintendent Bruce Northorp was in charge of the Olson hunt at the time of the arrest in 1981. He kept quiet both during and after the horrific affair out of respect for the mourning parents. He knew that one day he would have to set the record straight, and in this book he finally speaks out. His full review of the case clearly shows that the RCMP investigation of the Olson affair was plagued by its own internal problems and personalities.

Clifford Olson was the most hated man in Canada when he confessed his crimes. Much conjecture surrounded his arrest. The agreement to pay $100,000 for him to reveal the locations of his victims led to tension and mistrust within the RCMP. Now, through his exclusive access to Bruce Northorp, Les Holmes' story uncovers the inner thoughts of one of the RCMP's most respected officers.

5 out of 5 stars More Strange Fruit.......2003-08-21

Gambino makes one of the most heinous crimes in American history into a fine narrative. In some parts of the US, hatred of Italians was more pervasive than the animus directed at blacks and for decades Italians - specifically Southern Italians and Sicilians - were placed at the lowest rung of the social scale. This all came to a head when local, state and national officials all played a part in the worst mass lynching in US history. Even the president thought it "a good thing." There are lessons to be learned and Dr. Gambino delivers them in a fast-paced tale of the greed and hatred that resulted in a mass murder.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. A simple account of a complex and tragic event........1998-08-05

A simple, if not scholarly, account of a mass murder perpetrated on a number of helpless innocents. This would be a fine True Crime book, but Richard Gambino does not want to simply tell a story America forgot. He delivers the details of the henious crime set in the intrigue of the New Orleans political scene. And gives insight, with historical perspective, to the diplomatic backlash and the response of an apathetic America. A must read for Italian-Americans, who crave a little righteous rage or for those who have any interest in the Immigration debate. This book is a reminder of one of a series of pass sins commited by a "multi-cultural conscious" society.

This was one of the first romance novels I ever read, and these many years later (and after many, many re-reads), it is still one of the funniest and sweetest of all the romances! Tom and Sharon had a winning team and I can honestly recommend all of their books--buy them if you can--but this was my "first love" and still has the power to enchant and entrance!

4 out of 5 stars Best Single Category Romance Ever Written (A+ Grade).......2002-12-30

The Loveswept Line was a treat for romance lovers. Many well know authors have come out of this line and it is a shame that it is no longer around. Lighnting That Lingers could possibly be the best book to ever come out as a single category romance.
This books is very sweet and telling of human nature and what we see is not necessarily what we get.
Jennifer is a very shy librarian who has just started out on her own. One night her co-workers go out for a night on the town. They go to a strip club where they salivate over stripper Philip. Jenny is just plain embarrassed by the whole situation, which Philip senses, but tries to help her enjoy herself by offering her a little kiss.
Philip is not only a stipper. He is from a very old school family upbringing, has a love for animals and is very very lonely. He needs money and the only way he knows how is to strip for it. He sees Jenny again in town and knows there is something special about her. Perhaps she can help erase his loneliness?
The Curtis duo have written Jenny and Philip in a beautiful way. Philip is described as drop dead gorgeous whereas Jenny is a little plain but also cute. Philip handles her like one of his baby owls. Jenny in turn allows herself to accept what Philipis offering.
These are just two people trying to find their place in life. Hopefully Jenny can get past Philip's job so they can build a life together.
Philip is a true gentleman in every sense and Jenny maybe a little nieve but when she is with Philip, she shines.
For adults and teens alike, this book will "Linger" long after you have finished.

5 out of 5 stars The Stripper and the Librarian.......2000-02-26

Once in a great while, a book comes along in the stream of tired, overworked romance series that blows away all hint of catagory: This is such a book. A strait-laced librarian, who supercedes the stereotype, falls in love with a male stripper who is both more and less than he seems. There is nothing superficial about this book. The story is told with a tenderness and honesty that made this jaded reader squirm uncomfortably, laugh, and cry. If you can find a copy of this book, get it.

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing Category Romance ever written!!!!.......1998-01-09

Simply put...the most sensitive, amazing, funny, heartfelt and sexy romance I have ever read. I hear this one is on a lot of people's top 10 lists.
