"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8)

5 out of 5 stars Another classic Dr Seuss book.......2007-07-20

Although its not as great as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is certainly one of my children's favorites, and they especially love trying to read some of the rhymes outloud. Certainly a great choice for a book for your young ones.

5 out of 5 stars These fish become swans.......2007-07-12

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss gives young children an excellent way to start reading independently. The book helps children learn to count to eleven and it increases their vocabulary as you read it along with them the first few times. Young children just learning to read will be able to read this book as one of their first books that they can read by themselves; and the cute illustrations will delight children and even adults everywhere.

The book's plot is not entirely deep--nor should it be for this exceptionally young, tender age group. The book helps kids to learn how to count to eleven and recognize the words for those numbers; it also uses pictures to introduce words for basic colors including red, blue, black, yellow and pink. Children also explore the concepts of old and new; fast and slow; high and low; thin and fat as well as here and there. Excellent! The book also introduces the telephone and how two people can communicate by phone. Your child will love that--they'll think that the phone is a toy!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child also gets a heightened awareness of the world around them; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

This is one of our favorite Seuss creations, along with Fox In Socks. My son lvoes to finish every sentence for us. We love this book and the funny creatures in it! ("From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere!"

4 out of 5 stars Fish and Things.......2007-04-10

You will have fun reading this tongue twister with your child. With funny made up animals (things) and verse that can twist the tongue of the most experienced reader.
What is the story about? Nothing really, just a bunch of nonsense that makes Dr. Seuss as fun as ever

Book Description

Childhood-synonymous with slip 'n' slides, bubble gum, and getting your little brother in trouble. Parenthood-synonymous with Band-Aid bandages, haircuts, and giving timeouts for tattling. Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott effortlessly navigate the nuances of everyday family life in this 22nd Baby Blues collection.

Named Best Comic Strip of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society, Baby Blues details the goings-on inside the MacPherson home. Running at a frenzied pace, young parents Darryl and Wanda keep up with Zoe, Hammie, and baby Wren as Kirkman and Scott perfectly capture the domestic discord and creative chaos associated with this household's hilarious activities.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Still funny, but Zoe annoys me.......2007-07-14

I still enjoy reading the comic strip, but as the kids age I get annoyed at all the parents put up with. Zoe's a snot and there seems to be a lack of discipline. It's just annoying to me to read smart-mouthed kids back talking their parents. I don't find it funny since I run into these kids all over the place and it isn't funny then, either. That lack of respect for one's elders isn't cute or funny. It's pathetic, mean and doesn't serve society well as a whole. Daryl, though, is still my favorite.

For energetic toddlers (are there any who aren't?), here's a book that invites them to wiggle along with the story. Told in rollicky, wiggly rhyme that begs to be read again and again, Doreen Cronin's latest romp will have toddlers wiggling, giggling, and then (hopefully) falling into bed, blissfully exhausted!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Improves with "Do your ears hang low".......2007-09-20

We got this book from a box of Cheerios. The rhythm is awkward, but it improves if you sing the book to the tune of one of my dad's favorite camp songs: "Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow?" I had to modify a line or two - for example, it says, "If you wiggle with your breakfast, it might wind up on your head." This is about one syllable too long for both the book's meter and "Do your ears hang low," so, when I sing it to my daughter, the line corresponds to "Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow," and I sing, "If you wiggle with your breakfast, it might LAND on your head." My daughter (she's two) requests this book frequently and now that I sing the lyrics, I have the book memorized. I used to memorize other things, but now I memorize children's books. My favorite books for creative rhyming will always be Dr. Seuss (read the highly sardonic one-star review of Green Eggs and Ham on this site - not mine, but I have copied it in full and sent it to friends) and also Sandra Boynton. I like Sandra Boynton's books - particularly Hippos Go Berserk - because her story lines are somewhat unpredictable. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Not fun for a 15 month old.......2007-05-30

I thought the simple, rhyming text and bright artwork would be great for my book-loving 15 month old, but he was bored stiff. I've tried it several times now, and each time he listens and looks at a few pages, then starts looking for a different book. I've tried silly voices, silly movements, quick reading, and everything, and this book is BORING for him. Weird, because he would sit still for almost any book....most of them at this age range or higher (no board books for this little man!)

It's a cute book for sure, but there are so many other better ones out there. Ignore the hype, and check this one out from a library before you buy. AND, if you must buy, get this author's "Bounce" instead. That one is similar, but better.

5 out of 5 stars Funny Bedtime story.......2007-01-19

My children ages 4 and 2 absolutely love this book. They enjoy the zany characters and light-hearted rhymes. It is a fun way to get them introduced to rhymes for pre-reading skills in a child friendly manner. Definately a winner for a gift or for your own little one.

5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-01-15

I bought this for my Pre-K class and they LOVE it! Its a fun book that you just cant sit still while reading it.

3 out of 5 stars Wiggle Review.......2007-01-09

I was rather disappointed in the book. The rhyme and rhythm of the verse were difficult at times. I was expecting it to be more fun, something that kids could mimic.

Book Description

It's 2023, and Guy Fontaine is an unwilling new resident at Mission Pescadero, an assisted-living facility outside San Francisco. It doesn't take him long to realize that his fellow residents have reverted to the lifestyles they embraced in the sixties, complete with sex, drugs, and rock and roll (with a little Viagra thrown in for good measure). The Mission Pescadero staff, and the world outside, would like nothing more than to forget these aging hippies, but the residents want-no, demand-to be treated with respect and dignity. And they'll fight for it. When one resident's prohibited cat is discovered by Mission Pescadero's domineering administrator, the resulting confrontation mushrooms into an epic battle between authority and anarchy, complete with twenty-four-hour media coverage and the involvement of California's governor, Drew Barrymore. As tensions escalate, Guy finds himself cast as an unlikely radical in a drama he doesn't understand.

By turns outrageous, hilarious, and, ultimately, touching, Tim Sandlin's new novel is a fascinating exploration of how the baby boomers are facing their own mortality. Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty is Sandlin at his iconoclastic best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grumpy Old Stoners.......2007-08-14

As much as I would love to take credit for that descriptive title, I cannot. That is merely another gem from Tim Sandlin.

If you enjoy reading a well written, entertaining, laugh out loud funny book with a whole lot of heart then you are in luck because "Jimi Hendrix Turns Eighty" will deliver on all counts.

5 out of 5 stars So Much For the Golden Years.......2007-08-03

I must admit to being a big fan of Tim Sandlin, ever since "Sex and Sunsets" he has had my attention. This book is way to close to my age group and Tim is too young to know all the 60's music references. Scary as the prospect of my future in an "assisted living" facility may be, send me to this spot, I want to sit between the two Sunshines, I think I met one of them at the Fillmore at a Paul Butterfield Concert many years ago. Congrats to Tim, this hilarious book has a brutal honest side that is longer than Jerry Garcia's beard.

5 out of 5 stars Crunchy on the outside, soft at the core.......2007-05-19

In this old-age romp, Sandlin turns his sharp satirical talents loose while doing that other thing that hilarious satirists can't always do -- empathy. Sandlin is able to both poke fun at sentimentality and yet he has a soft touch too; when these old peeps aren't expsoing their rear ends in mass-moonings, they expose their sadnesses, bewilderments, regrets, and disappointments at the lives behind and in front of them. The best part of JHT80 is the highly refreshing take on stereotypes of old age: the wisdom, feeblemindedness and bloody boringness with which old people are often relegated don't feature here. These old folks stick it to that portrayal and fling an adult diaper at anyone who ever says growing old means acting like it.

4 out of 5 stars Taking a walk on the "wild"& unique side..........2007-04-02

All "baby boomers" should read this book. The references to the sixties and people and places of the time are nostalgic. The honesty about situations that the elderly of our generation are realistically written about. Alot of food for thought, I enjoy the authors writing style.

5 out of 5 stars Comic romp and frightening parable wrapped into one.......2007-03-08

It's 2022, Jenna Bush is President, Gulf War VI is going on, and Gen Xers are warehousing their aging boomer parents in "assisted living" communities and taking control of their money under false pretenses.

Guy Fontaine, a retired sportswriter from Oklahoma, has moved in with his daughter, Claudia, in California after the death of beloved wife Lily. But when he has a senior moment--he hallucinates and drives a golf cart onto the freeway--he is locked up in Mission Pescadero, an assisted living community that encapsulates the frightening world Sandlin posits for our future. An evil administrator runs the place with all the humanity of the worst lunch lady in the boomers' past, peopling it with patients brought in on the flimsiest diagnoses of dementia, with residents going "through the tunnel" to the nursing wing on even flimsier diagnoses by her corrupt doctor/near lover, where they are drugged comatose and quiet.

The Mission's population is mainly leaders of the leftist movements of the Sixties, who have created a hierarchy based on when and what they did in the decade that you're only supposed to have been there if you've forgotten it. Guy, straight, drug-free and monogamous all his life, finds himself struggling to adjust with the proponents of free love and drug use in the golden years. But when the administrator discovers one patient has--shudder--a cat in his room, Guy is driven to violence to defend someone who had befriended him, setting off a revolt to liberate the Mission.

Sandlin carries this absurd yet realistic situation with aplomb, showing real understanding of the concerns and difficulties faced by old people, as well as the trends of society that, if left unchecked, could lead to a world like the one he imagines here. Even minor characters are given some depth and the good lines are dispersed amongst them. Guy's unconventional romance with Rocky is counterpointed by other love stories, from a lesbian encounter between one of the youngest residents and a yoga instructor to an alley cat of a man who doesn't realize he has terrible breath. Even the villains are given some back story and some sympathy. And all to the tunes of Jefferson Airplane and The Who.

My favorite character is a woman who comes out of a drug-induced coma to lead the revolution, barking orders in a remarkably cogent and prepared manner, which foreshadows revelations about her character that end up shocking the residents and prolonging their isolation. Full confession: I once met a woman who might have been a model for this character while doing work in a prison. Sandlin has the type down perfectly.

He also has the good sense to provide a bittersweet ending, reminding us that mortality and fragility occur even among the worthy.

Whether the book will become non-fiction, as Sandlin predicts, is really up to all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Super Cute.......2007-04-12

This book is cute and the perfect bedtime story for my 2 year old. There are several "bedtime" plots among the Blue's Clues set and they all do a good job of easing into slumber land by coming to a peaceful place at the end of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Blue's a Hit.......2007-03-02

I know Blue's biggest fan. His name is Jaylon and he's 19 months old. Blue can do no wrong and this book does not disaapoint. Steve and Blue take you through Blue's bedtime ritual. The steps are simple, the pictures are colorful, it's small enough to carry around and the book is sturdy enough to withstand eight teeth.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepy Time With Blue........2006-08-23

Good Night Blue is a great book to read prior to nap time or bed time. The book shows Blue going potty, brushing his teeth, and getting ready for bed. Children get a great story, and get to learn about all the things they need to do before going to bed.

The book is sturdy and well made, and is fun to read. My 2 daughters love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite and great for learning colors!.......2007-10-15

This has been my 2yo daughter's favorite book for 6 months! She is learning her colors too! A fun, never-dull book for toddlers.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this as a child.......2007-09-12

We had this book when I was a child, though I think my parents bought it for my younger sister. Anyway, I loved it even as an older child (i.e. seven years old and so on), and as an adult it still tickles my funny bone. I plan to buy this and other Boynton books for my boy when he's a little older.

5 out of 5 stars My family's favorite Boynton book.......2007-08-13

The concept is simple enough -- recognizing patterns, and recognizing the humor when something doesn't go as planned. This works as a great metaphor for adults, too, because we'll run across plenty of turkeys who screw things up for themselves and others. After all, that's life.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Boynton Book.......2007-06-03

I usually like Boynton books but I'm not a fan of this one. It's subject matter and writing is terrible. "Blue hat, green hat, oops." It's that same sentence repeated for about 6 pages, switching out hat for socks, pants and shoes. There is no story. There's nothing to teach my daughter from reading this book, nor anything that could spark creativity. It's just boring.

5 out of 5 stars the Washington Color School.......2007-05-25

Here in the Washington DC metro area, we parents are always trying to impress other parents with how brilliant our children are. This book is key for that purpose. If your toddler knows colors, he or she can "read" this book with an accuracy that will be the envy of all within hearing. The book also, quite practically, teaches the reading eye to start at the top left and move right. It also teaches the little imp to be a comedian, screaming OOPSIE or WHOOPSIE instead of the orthodox "oops." So higly recommended that I insist you buy one. OOPS, shouldn'ta said that....

Eventhough our children are in their teen years, the Baby Blues comic strips still make me laugh until my belly hurts which is ironically healing! Laughter is good medicine!

5 out of 5 stars LOL.......2007-04-18

Laughing Out Loud is not something I am known for, but I got Lots Of Laughs form this book and am having to resist buying more of the series - and will probably end up caving to the temptation to L O L more.Framed!: a Baby Blues TreasurySomething Chocolate This Way Comes: A Baby Blues Collection (Baby Blues Scrapbook #21)

4 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN -in or out of the bathtub!.......2006-11-17

My nine-month-old son truely enjoys this book. First of all, its plastic pages withstand not only water but also tiny teeth, so I don't have to worry about him "eating" the pages as with other books. Secondly, he pays close attention while I read the book to him; while there isn't much of a storyline, the phrases form a catchy rhyme. When we are done reading, I allow him to play with the front cover which has a squeaky detachable fish for him to chew and a squishy fish scene to feel. I recommend this book to any parent of a baby who loves to chew on books - this one is engaging and quite durable!

5 out of 5 stars A kid favorite.......2005-12-06

My 2 year-old loves Bear and this is one of her favorite books. She wants us to read it to her over and over. We just bought our second copy because the first one we had was a pass-down from her older sisters and we wore it out from reading it to the kids so often.
I wish more Bear items were available.

5 out of 5 stars My little girl enjoyed this book!.......2001-08-29

My daughter has always since she was 6 months old loved Bear in the Big Blue House and so we bought her this book and she absolutley loved it. She liked identifying the foods because most of them were her favorites also.

5 out of 5 stars Feed your child's mind with Bear!.......2000-03-28

Our toddler loves Bear and can often be looking at one of her Bear books. Before dinner each evening she wants us to read Bear Loves Food!

In this Bear book Bear talks about different types of food that he loves. He shows that a good variety of foods are just as much his favorites as others. He also introduces Pip, Pop, Treelo, Ojo, and Tutter and their favorite foods.

Bear Loves Food is one of our favorites and I am sure it can be one of yours too!

It shows bear with all of his friends talking about food It is a very warm book for any child. I would also recommend "Bear Loves Water". My daughter is just amazed by this book.

5 out of 5 stars If you missed the early ones, get this book!.......2002-12-29

"Baby Blues : This is Going to be Harder Than We Thought" is the first book of the series and a must for "Baby Blues" fans. You can really see how much this comic strip has evolved, but yet, some things will never change. With great expressions and witty lines, it will have you smirking in no time. I recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for all parents and kids!!.......2001-09-02

I got this book about 3 months ago, and I loved it! It shows you that parenting isn't the most easiest thing in the world. This book has lots of laughs and good times in it. So if you want lots of laughs (100 percent guranteed) then get this wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars True to Life!.......2001-06-22

I have been a fan of Baby Blues since my daughter was born, eight years ago. I sometimes think that Mr. Kirkman and Mr. Scott hide outside my windows and take notes, because so many of their strips are right on the mark! If you have small children, are thinking about having small children, or just want a good belly laugh, I highly recommend the entire series of Baby Blues collections. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The best gift for new parents you'll find..........2000-11-17

We received this as a gift from friends when we had our first child, and could not stop laughing as we gained a new appreciation for what it meant to be parents. Whether you're new parents, know someone who is, or have been parents for years and want to remember what it was *really* like, this book needs to be on your list.

We've now given this book as a gift to four other couples who've had babies recently, and all agree that it's their favorite new book on the shelf. It covers everything - changing the first diaper, the first visits from the parents (both sets), sleepless nights, and the joy of teething, to mention a few.

Buy this book. You'll laugh for a long time, and will probably end up sharing it with your other friends fortunate enough to have kids of their own.

5 out of 5 stars A comic strip that tells like it is about raising kiddies!.......2000-04-25

At first, I didn't really like the comic strip all about babies and parenting, which simply isn't my cup of tea. But - over the time, I began to truly appreciate what a vaulable contribution it could be to our society: a pretty stern disclaimer to the usual maternal fantasy that every young girl holds dear to her heart when she is old enough to get married and produce children. The not-so-nice part of having babies like labor pains, breastfeeding, dirty diapers, vomiting, screaming temper tantrums, shot nerves, etc. are all so candidly depicted here on the very pages of our funnies. In fact, it seems to me that if it wasn't for the kinship ties and the anxious need to support the future species, Darryl and Wanda would've probably been very happy to simply drop off Zoe and Hammie at a nearby orphanage.
