Basic Primer........2003-10-26
This is an easy, short read but it leaves the reader feeling like something is missing - like what happens. The first battle in the final campaign of the Civil War, one has to wonder why the author covers a single battle in two volumes and just where that second volume is. What there is of the battle is covered fairly well but the engagement is covered so much better by so many other authors that you would be well served to skip this rendition.
Banned Book.......2001-11-18
This book has the destinction of being BANNED by the National Park Service from being sold by Eastern National book stores in their visitor centers because it is unreliable. Let the buyer beware.
Immensly detailed.......2001-08-20
My opinion is that you will not like this book if you are not VERY interested in the Civil War. I liked it. But, I warn you that it is FULL of LITTLE details about the battle. If that's what you are looking for, get it. What is hard to grasp in this book is the "big picture." This is partially due to the poor maps provided. If you can, you make use of other maps, so that you don't just get a whole bunch of tiny details. You need a big map of the whole general area with the place and road names. And, it would be nice to have maps that showed troop movement. If it were not for this lack of maps and the "big picture" part of the battle, I would have given it 5 stars. Another thing. This book does not have too much about the generals and what kind of people they were. It concentrates more on the rank and file dirty-work soldiers.
Book Description
Nowhere to Run: The Story of Soul Music is a unique oral history: here are the recollections of many of the giants of soulSmokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, Mary Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Screaming Jay Hawkins, and Wilson Pickett. These and other interviews, many of them exclusive, add up to a brilliant anecdotal portrait of the music and the life.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2006-08-05
This is a great book about soul, I read many things about artists that I had not found in the normal biographies. It covers a lot: chicago, stax, detroit. Only Muscle Shoals is sadly forgotten. In that case Peter Guralnicks 'Sweet Soul Music' is a better buy
Poignant history of Soul Music.......2003-05-11
This monumental work consists of three parts. Part One: Singing Both Sides, looks at the Gospel and Blues roots of Soul Music, the record companies that first recorded this style, the DJs and the radio stations that played it, and includes interviews with Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Cissy Houston, Ben E. King, Ahmet Ertegun, James Bown and Wilson Pickett. The pioneering work of Ray Charles features heavily here.
Part Two: City Soul, starts with a look at the early Soul artists on Atlantic and other labels and includes the reminiscences of Jerry Wexler, includes information on Solomon Burke, Sam Cooke, Motown Records, plus interviews with Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves, Diana Ross, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin. It also includes information on Curtis Mayfield and the Chicago-based record companies.
Part Three: Southern Soul, deals with James Brown again, the Memphis scene, Stax Records and its legendary artists, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Muscle Shoals, Joe Tex, Isaac Hayes, the New Orleans scene, and concludes with a poignant interview with Irma Thomas.
As a young teen I was enthralled by the voices of Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Percy Sledge and others, so this book finally made the people behind the music come alive for me. It is easy to get lost in its labyrinthine pleasures, to discover how, when and where favourite songs were written, to learn about the backgrounds of the musicians, the record companies and the business people like Ertegun and Berry Gordy.
There's a lot of human interest in the text, a lot of triumph and tragedy - Hirshey is a masterful writer who really gets into the music and compels one to reach for your CD and vinyl collections to hear these great voices again. She mostly allows the voices to speak for themselves, but in a brilliantly interwoven text where the songs, the charts, the gigs and the tours form the historical frame in which the voices reveal the human element.
There are sixteen black and white plates with photographs of artists like Cooke, Wells, Ross, Gaye, Wonder, Lamont Dozier and the Holland Brothers, Franklin, Reeves, Junior Walker, James Brown, Don Covay and others. The thorough index to artists, personalities, songs, record companies and TV shows make referencing easy.
As music writing this book is indispensable, as human interest, it is engaging and addictive. Hirshey succeeds in capturing the mood of the times and the flavours and history of a great American musical style by letting these timeless voices speak for themselves so eloquently.
A brilliant history of Motown and Southern Soul.......1999-09-09
Hirshey's history of Motown and Southern Soul music offers 23 brilliant chapters, each loosely based around material gathered either in interviews or by spending time with a particular performer or group. And Hirshey writes like a DREAM. Here's Aretha at a rehersal Hirshey attended: "She waved hello with a half-eaten cheeseburger, finished it off, and walked to a music stand in the center of the room. She was wearing a red velour slacks outfit beneath a loose gray coat. A half dozen packs of Kools filled a roomy black leather satchel. Aretha lit a cigarette, nodded to the stout, dashikied concertmaster, squared her shoulders, and took a long, deep, drag of smoke. Ten feet from the epicenter, I felt the first note square in the solar plexus. It hummed through every membrane in the room, saturated the gouged acoustic baffling, rising higher, louder, in a blue cloud of Kool smoke, echoing up the sooty airshaft, a Pentecostal crack in the dense city night. 'Jesus God,' the studio watchman whispered. 'Almighty Jesus God.'" Convinced? Hirshey gets inside the frought relationship of Sam and Dave, rides around New York in a limo with James Brown and Al Sharpton, goes to a Japanese restaurant with Mary Wilson, and lots more. If you love soul and Motown --Irma Thomas, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, James Brown, Solomon Burke, Otis, Aretha, Isaac Hayes, etc--you'll love this book.

Book Description
Botulism, malaria, smallpox, plague: as medical producer for television's highly rated morning news program, 'Key to America,' Annabelle Murphy makes her living explaining hor-rific conditions. So when someone dies inside the broad-cast center with symptoms terrifyingly similar to those of the latest scourge, she knows the panic spreading through the corridors of KEY News is justified. One death follows another, and to Annabelle the circumstances begin to suggest that they may be diabolical murders. When the authorities lock down the broadcast center, neither victims nor mur-derer can escape. In Nowhere to Run, Mary Jane Clark's insider's eye and talent for high-speed pacing create an authoritative thriller.
Customer Reviews:
Finally... an ending that is not abrupt.......2004-10-18
I love Mary Jane Clark and her first 3 books were awesome but the last 2 while quick reads, I found a bit disappointing because the endings were too abrupt. This time, however, she did not miss. The story of course focuses on KEY News and its Medical Correspondent/Producer Anabelle Murphy. The story deals with the issue of anthrax which while is a very serious issue was dealt with in a way that did not make for a disturbing read. The plot starts of with a KEY employee who while delivering information on anthrax, surprises the world and the KEY employees by showing a tube of anthrax on live TV. Now the FBI is involved in trying to get John Lee, MD to reveal who gave him the anthrax. Meanwhile, KEY employees and others are starting to die due to the anthrax poisoning. As the FBI continue to delve into the source of the anthrax, a lab report comes back stating that the tube that Dr. John Lee used on the show was actually a tube of powdered sugar. This leads to the interesting question of who has the tube of anthrax and why are people being killed. The killer actually has targeted Anabelle who not only has to find out who killed her ex-boyfriend, KEY employee Jerome Henning but who also has to deal with a husband who is dealing with 9/11 post traumatic disorder. I gave this book a 5 because Mary Jane Clark did a fine job of dealing with difficult issues and when the killer is finally revealed, you will be surprised at to who it is and at least you will have a reason as to why the killer was motivated to kill.
As always with MJC, you get a quick read with multiple suspects to play around with and guess who is the real villain.
Not what I expected.......2004-08-30
I felt a bit misled with this book. The back cover and inside blurb focused on a lockdown situation, which sounded like a great suspense situation and I was looking forward to reading the book. Then, absolutely nothing happens for the first 300 pages! Basically nothing much at all, just lots of short chapters, and tons of characters, none of which we really get to know well enough to enjoy their company or care about. Then it's in the last 50 pages of the book that we finally get to the lockdown situation, and it's just a letdown, no big drama whatsoever, and the story just fizzled out.
I read another book over the weekend, Temporary Sanity by Rose Connors, that honestly blew this one out of the water. She is like a female John Grisham, and you really get to know and care about the people in her book, which is what was missing with this one.
Much cornier than I would have expected!.......2004-07-13
This was my first MJC book, but having read the reviews, I expected an action-packed exciting book. What I got was a book that dragged on and on. I felt the writing was extremely choppy which was very frustrating (I tend to become a slow reader when the writing is this way... when it is well written, like I am able to fly through a book). I didn't feel the characters were that interesting or exciting... Annabelle, the main character, seemed like a nice sweet working mom, but I really couldn't feel passionate about her because the author just didn't create that for me.
And then there's the ending... I really don't think it could have been any cornier... something about someone being allergic to dogs... Someone sneazing near a dog? Oh, please! No offense, but anyone who read and loved this book must never have read a well written, well thought out mystery!
A very quick read........2004-02-14
After getting used to the rapid fire, reporting style of writing, I began to enjoy this very quick read. Someone is using Anthrax to get rid of key members of a TV newsroom, some by the Anthrax powder and others because they could be potential witnesses. I would have awarded this novel more stars except that the ending was written in almost "Boys Own Weekly" style...all that was missing was twirling mustachios and sneering laughter.
The ending failed..........2003-10-10
This could be a really great suspense novel given the topic and newsroom setting. However, like another reviewer mentioned, there were way too many characters (suspects, of course) to keep up with and almost every page is its own chapter. It feels like a lot of stopping and starting as you read, keeping transitions from being smooth. In addition, which I am starting to see a definite trend when it comes to MJC's novels, she wraps them up way too quickly. There was nothing (no hints, real clues, etc.) to lead the reader to discover the "bad guy" on his own. We found out whodunit when MJC gave us an almost laughable clue in the last few pages of the book.
For the reader that prefers mystery stories with solid structure, a steady stream of real clues and a sensible, smart ending, I'd go elsewhere for fulfillment.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2002-11-15
I saw this book in the store for the longest time. The cover kind of turned me away from it. One day I read what the book was about and thought that this would be an intresting novel and it was. This book was the bomb, Cassie Lee was such a strong heroin to me she over came many obstacles and let's not mention Solomon what a man. This wasn't your typical romance book.
Nowhere to run.......2002-10-05
The old west was s very important time in history and it is truly wonderful to finally see more black western love story emerging. I loved Cassie Lee and Solomon story and I hated to see the book end. Well done, and I hope to see more historically western black love stories in the future.
Totally Engrossing Read.......2000-11-29
Ms. Gunn definitely put her heart and soul into Nowhere to Run. From the very first sentence the reader is catapulted into the world of Cassie Lee and Solomon. With a sharp eye for detail and the ability to write beautiful imagery, she really delivers! In a time when African Americans had absolutely no rights as human beings, her characters showed the kind of strength and resilience worthy of hero worship. Yes, Nowhere to Run is romantic and sensual (for you diehard romance readers). However the author displayed the kind of depth we've come to expect from so-called 'serious' reads, the kind that top the New York Times Bestseller lists. I've seen books that make that list which truly don't live up to the honor. Nowhere to Run should have been there when it debuted. But perhaps you, the reader, can get the word out now: THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!!! 'Nuff said?
ACHEIVE YOUR DREAMS UNDER YOUR OWN CONDITIONS!.......1998-05-01
The character of Cassie Lee captured me at the beginning and carried me through the entire book! Cassie Lee was a slave whose dream was to become free and rich. She was purchashed to become the wife of a powerful and rich black man. I know you're thinking..."Now, If she has all of the right ingredients, then there is no way that her dreams could not have been acheived!" WRONG! Choosing not to accept the conditions and treatment that she was given, she left with NOWHERE TO RUN!
She was no longer a slave, but she was still poor. Continuing with half of her goals accomplished, she remained honest and hardworking throughout her many trials.
In the end, not only did she become rich and free, she did it CASSIE LEE's way!! YOU GO GIRL!
We're all looking for our "Forever Man.".......1998-03-17
The story of Cassie Lee and Solomon Hawk will make you laugh and make you cry. It is a strong story of love, of family and forever.
Book Description
What will The Droids do without Emily?
Elizabeth Wakefield is surprised when Emily Mayer tells her she wants to join the school newspaper. After all, Emily's a musician, not a writer. Why would The Droids' crack drummer turn to writing, especially when the band is so popular?
Emily confides to Elizabeth that she's having problems at home. Her stepmother has imposed a strict curfew and gets annoyed whenever Emily practices her drumming. What's worse, Emily's father seems to agree with his new wife. Emily's certain her stepmother is out to get her--and she's succeeding. Can Elizabeth help Emily before the situation at the Mayer home reaches the breaking point?
Customer Reviews:
Poor,poor Emily!!.......2002-10-10
Sometimes I thought I might cry for Emily. She is stuck living with her evil step mother and her uncaring father, and she has no idea where her real mother is.Hence Nowhere To Run.Her stepmum won't even let her play the drums any more which means that Emily will have to quit the school band. Her entire life is falling apart and Jessica and Elizabeth want to help her.I think it was an awfully good book, that really makes you feel Emily's hell.
This starts out well, but has an odd ending...........2002-06-14
In a series like SVH, consistency is the key. You can't kill off a character (Olivia Davidson in Last Wish/Earthquake) only to have her make a cameo appearance in a later book. (SV University Home for Christmas.)
There's another consistency problem in this book. Emily is having issues with her father, stepmother, and new stepsister. The stepsister (a toddler) chokes on a button and Emily saves her life. The stepmother is hysterical and when her dad walks in, thinks Emily has harmed the baby and yells at her to get out.
Cut to the Wakefield house. Emily's taken refuge there, while Grandma and Grandpa Wakefield come to visit. Grandma Wakefield tells Emily that when she married Grandpa Wakefield, he had already been married and had a son by that first marriage, and how nervous she felt around her new stepson. By this reasoning, Ned has a stepbrother. However, in Sweet Valley Saga: The Wakefield Legacy: The Untold Story, Ned's father, Robert, lies about his age to enlist in the Navy during WWII, where he meets Hannah (Ned's mother) via a radio where she is in a prisoner of war camp. He doesn't have any shore leave until he marries Hannah the moment the ship docks. By the Saga, Ned's parents have only been married once, and a stepson is never mentioned. Whoever is writing this series needs to remember what they've written, or have an idea of what has happened previously in the series. (Answer: Nowhere to Run was written before Wakefield Legacy and someone didn't remember or do their research!)
Other than that, this is a good book over "step" conflicts, and, seeing as how this is Sweet Valley, there is always a happy ending.
Not a very exciting suspense!!.......2001-08-03
A reader will enjoy this the first time but it isnt really a very exciting suspense. In her early(white cover)editions of Sweet Valley High,Kate William was a very boring writer.
very good.......2001-05-21
i liked this book alot because it dealt with something that happens alot in real life. To all who read this: READ THE BOOK you will love it.

Former NYPD deputy commissioner Daley must have taken lots of notes before he retired to write such powerful thrillers as Prince of the City, To Kill A Cop and Wall of Brass. His portraits of police officers cracking under political pressure are absorbing and totally believable, and his latest adds a touch of exotic romance on the French Riviera. Ex-New York detective Jack Dilger and former Nice inspector Madeline Leclerq are both out of work because they crossed the wrong superiors, so it's not surprising that they wind up in danger as well as in bed.
Book Description
Set in New York City and Nice, "Nowhere To Run" features a battle-hardened New York City cop whose controversial exploits got him thrown off the force and sent him into exile in France. There he meets a beautiful French detective who has also been fired for her investigation of corrupt politicians. They soon fall in love, both outsiders from a profession that has destroyed them, and now finding in each other a safe haven. But it soon becomes clear that neither one is safe, as mortal enemies from their pasts are bent on destroying them.
Customer Reviews:
What a Bummer!.......2005-10-26
I have to disagree with almost all the previous reviews. This book is not worth anyone's time - it has no moments - and is flat out boring. Jack is one of the most irresponsible, self serving and clueless characters I've come across to say nothing of being stupid. I can't imagine how he survived as a policeman for all those years. The French female character is slightly more likable and believable, but then going for a loser like Jack drops her I.Q. considerably and ruins whatever empathy one might have for her. I stuck it out to p. 337, but had made up my mind if he did one more stupid thing (which was inevitable) I would toss it, and I did. I realized I didn't care how it ended, but I hope he got what he deserved. This is not my idea of a good police thriller or procedural. I guess I expect too much of my heros.
Gave up on it.......2001-04-28
Read to page 115 and completely lost interest. Not much here to keep you interested. Cop stories are worn so thin. Not a good book for your library.
Not Daley's best, but still pretty good.......2000-04-04
This one dwells more on the characters and relationships than most of Daley's work, but is nontheless a good read. It details the nuts and bolts of detective work and political interference in a concise and interesting story. Daley's lead characters are frequently flawed, dislikable people, not unlike many one encounters in real life. It is part of the overall realism which is one of the major strengths of Daley's works.
Not bad, but annoying hero.......1998-12-07
This book wasn't awful, but not great either. Like another reviewer, I listened to the audio book, and therefore finished it. (Dick Hill's reading improves even the most boring books).
My complaint was the character of the hero. It's hard to care about such a blatantly selfish person. There was no one in this novel to really care about. There was some decent action, though.
A terrific read!.......1998-08-06
I was personally disappointed with the ending, but I can't fault the author (I like happy endings!)The good thing about this novel is pace! The author starts out at about 60 miles per hour and gradually increases the pace to the speed limit! He sustains interest and I could hardly put this book down.
