Customer Reviews:
Honestly lousy........2007-10-15
Sorry, but Jane Darlington was really hard to like. She was a deceitful dork. Her lousy attempt to pretend she was a special call girl was just silly. I really have liked other books by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, so this was a disappointment. The only good quality was that I though Cal Bonner was great.
Boring book.......2007-10-08
What a boring book. I couldn't even finish it. Yep, that boring. I gave it out eventually.
Still Horrible.......2007-08-15
Either the author or her fans apparently didn't like my previous review because it keeps getting removed. So let's go for number three. nobody's Baby But Mine is about a TSTL woman with highly questionable morals and a caveman who needs to go to anger management. The plot is unbelivable and should insult most reader's intelligence. I have read other works by this author and know she can do better than this, I just don't know whether I'll be sticking around to find out.
Another great read.......2007-07-09
As with all other SEP books, this one was amazing. Of course the plot was a bit far fetched (aren't most romance novels?) but that didn't prevent me from being totally captivated. I loved the characters, and for once I actually really enjoyed the side story of Cal's parents. Definitely read this book, you will not be disappointed!
What?.......2007-07-08
Normally, I can really trust the customer reviews on Amazon, but I can not believe someone (let alone several people) rated this 4 and 5 stars. Was I reading the same book? I don't have a problem with the kind of far out story line (after all, it is a romance novel, so you can expect some of that) even though I can not imagine what intellegent woman would have the thought process the main character does.... (example: I'm so incredibly brilliant that I honestly believe sleeping with a stupid guy will produce a normal child... Really? I must have missed that little tidbit in biology class.) But mainly, this story was just boring. The characters were one dimentional. Even their huge personal problems were boring. Skip it or just check it out at the library, but don't waste your money.

Ever since she was a teenager, children's book author Molly Somerville has been infatuated with handsome Kevin Tucker, quarterback for her sister's Chicago Stars football team. Unfortunately, Kevin doesn't know she's alive until one fateful weekend when they're marooned together at the family vacation cabin. When Molly gets carried away by her creative imagination and compromises Kevin, the results are disastrous and before the dust settles, Kevin's in trouble with his boss, Molly's in deep trouble with her emotions, and both of them are in danger of losing their hearts. Their journey to a happy ending is dicey, at best, and even if they can get past their outrageous and painful beginning, whether these two can lower their guards and let the other into their equally wary hearts is questionable.
Bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips makes her hardcover debut with this wonderful contemporary tale that features two familiar faces from prior novels as the hero and heroine. The characters are complicated, with difficult pasts that have shaped the adults they now are, and Phillips uses a deft touch in sketching their personal growth as they're tested with tragedy and bound together with love and a healthy dose of humor. As always, Phillips brings her delightful wit and a warm family setting to this novel that is sure to captivate readers. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
Molly Somerville loves her career as the creator of the Daphne the Bunny children's book series, but the rest of her life could use some improvement. She has a reputation for trouble that started even before she gave away her fifteen-million-dollar inheritance. Then there's her long-term crush on the quarterback for the Chicago Stars football team her sister owns—that awful, gorgeous Kevin Tucker, a man who can't even remember Molly's name!
One night Kevin barges into Molly's not-quite-perfect life and turns it upside down. Unfortunately, the Ferrari-driving riving, poodle-hating jock isn't as shallow as she wishes he were, and she soon finds herself at a place called Wind Lake. Surrounded by paintbox cottages, including a charming old bed-and-breakfast, Molly and Kevin battle their attraction and each other as they face one of life's most important lessons. Sometimes love hurts, sometimes it makes you mad as hell, and sometimes—if you're lucky—it can heal in a most unexpected way.

disappointing .......2007-08-05
I couldn't wait to read this book after reading "Nobody's baby but mine" but I was sooo disappointed. I was hard to see where the characters fell in love. There were a few funny moments but nothing like in "Nobody's baby but mine" (which made me laugh out loud and cry). The secondary plot about the older couple didn't flow very well in this book...their relationship really made no sense to me, the whole time I was reading about them I was thinking "huh?" Maybe I just didn't understand the humor and the chemistry of the characters, there were parts that i just didn't understand why were in the book...
H-O-T.......2007-07-08
Okay. Like any piece of romantic fiction, there were some silly elements to this story. However, I found the characters sexy enough to keep reading. Enjoy!
Improbabilities Sweetened by Sugary Romance.......2007-04-09
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a master of the romantic fiction genre, and she has a clever turn of phrase that makes her dialogue always funny and never stale. However, despite her skill with conversation, sometimes Phillips tends to lack in the practicality quotient of the novel.
Molly Somerville is a child storybook author, the sweet, mousy (yet actually quite pretty), and spunky heroine romance authors love to write ... again and again and again. When she spends a weekend at her sister's spare house, an unexpected visitor drops in - the star football player of her sister's sports team. He is, of course, a handsome, speeding, thrill-seeking, close-mouthed bad boy that would never, ever, not in a million years, fall in love or even so much as look at a girl as plain as Molly Somerville.
And yet, the inevitable happens, but in such a way that it almost distasteful - this is the book's lowest point, a period where giving it up seems almost preferable to moving on. No sort of romance would seem to blossom from this soil, and the fact that it happened at all is so utterly improbable that you're laughing through the bizarreness of it all.
However, after this lapse, the book picks up and develops a sweet, tender romance that gets quite good. The male lead is one of Phillips' most attractive, being a little broody and taciturn and of course everything turns right and rosy in the end.
The getting there, however, takes some teeth-gritting. If you like Phillips, you'll love her other works, like It Had to Be You, Match Me If You Can, and Ain't She Sweet. This Heart of Mine has the same irresistable lead and witty dialogue, but the plot gapes illogically.
Couldn't put this one down to save my life...........2007-01-25
I've become a romance novel junkie and I've read a ton but this one really stands apart for me. This was my first read from SEP and I almost didn't pick it up because the cover art reminded me of historical romance which totally isn't my thing but after reading the back cover I went for it and boy am I glad I did.
I fell in love with these characters. I want to be Molly, I want to marry Kevin. Not only are the main characters wonderful but the supporting characters are charming as well. I've read other books where I've just wanted everyone else to go away except for the hero and herione but not this one.
Although the general plot is the tried and true girl has crush, boy doesn't even know she exists, girl catches his attention and they eventually fall in love SEP does it with twists, turns and humor. At one point I thought I knew exactly where the plot was headed and I was totally wrong.
In addition to everything else that I loved about this book I adored the Daphne The Bunny children's books that Molly writes. I wish they were real, I'd buy them for my kids in a heartbeat. I wish Daphne and Benny had been the cover art for this book!
I am heading right out to find more books by SEP. I think she's just moved right to the top of my favorite authors list which includes Janet Evanovich, Rachel Gibson, Susan Donovan, Susan Anderson, LeAnne Banks, Christine Dodd, JoAnn Ross and when I want something a little naughtier I pick up Shannon McKenna, Erin McCarthy, Lori Forester or Jenelle Denison.
Entertaining, but a little disappointing.......2006-07-27
I have to admit that I was disappointed by this book. I liked the Kevin character from Nobody's Baby But Mine, and Molly from It Had to be You.... so what happened to them? I was entertained and found several parts of this book funny, but Molly's actions that force the characters into each other's proximity are pretty preposterous. Also, it was a little disconcerting to find that the intelligent Molly from It Had to Be You turned out to be pretty flakey. It was nice to see the continuing connections between the characters we were introduced to in other SEP books. All in all, This Heart of Mine is a worthy read if you can get past a few bizarre plot points.

Memorable Romance.......2007-05-26
I read this book awhile ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The memory of it has stayed with me. It was the first of Ms.Lowell books that I read and because of it I discovered a truly talented author. I won't go into the details of the book because others have but I must say that the story was great and the characters were very well written.
If you like medieval romances I would also recommend "Forbidden" by Ms. Lowell.
Sizzling Page Turner.......2007-02-11
This is my first Elizabeth Lowell book, and I'm very impressed! This is truly a sizzling page turner of a novel. It may not be a literary classic, but it will entertain you and keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. I loved it. (There were a few typos, a few mix ups of words and names, but I guess that happens.) It could have been edited down by about 10-percent easily - but it was still very good. It warmed up a very cold February night - and it was so interesting that I read it straight through in one very long sitting. :) So kudos to the author.
Order the other two........2007-01-24
This is the second book I've read in the Only Series and I've ordered the other two. I love the the strong women she writes about and the pages keep turning.
One of my all time keepers.......2006-07-29
This book is on my keeper shelf at home.
This is a story based on misunderstanding and personal demons that drive both Wolfe and Jessi to fear the worst. Wolfe's sin is to push Jessi harder and harder away, and Jessi's sin is to never trust him with her personal demon though she started it all by reaching out for him alone.
I've read this story many times. By the time I get to the breaking point scene when Jessi finally names her demon I am in tears. It is written with such ferocity and realism that you are shaken. It's frustrating to spend so long building up to that revelation, but that also adds the terror and turmoil.
Disappointed.......2006-03-26
It was hard to like either of these characters. Wolfe was such a jerk to Jesse, except for the last few chapters and Jesse was a pathetic heroine. Wolfe didn't care if she married Lord Gore or any other man, as long as it wasn't him. A little jealousy or possessiveness in the beginning on his part would have been comforting. And couldn't Jesse have made a living as a seamstress or something in America and not have to trap Wolf into marriage? The last three pages had a nice happy ending, but I wish that Jesse had made Wolf suffer a little more for all the torment that he put her through.

Dear Reader,
Sometimes, if you're very lucky, you can go home again. An earlier version of this book was titled
The Diamond Tiger and came out in 1993 under the name Ann Maxwell. When my present publisher offered me the opportunity of going back to the novel under the name Elizabeth Lowell, I admit that I hesitated. In the years since first publication, the diamond trade has changed so greatly that it would be impossible to update the facts in the book without destroying the very story that had compelled me to write in the first place.
But like the diamond trade, my style of telling a story has also changed over the years. I decided to revisit the novel because I loved it and hoped my new readers would as well.
Death Is Forever is my favorite kind of story, combining elements of danger, greed, trust, secrets, passions, and death. Enjoy!
"
Customer Reviews:
Loved it!.......2006-05-30
I could not put this one down. I have read other Lowell books but don't remember enjoying them as much as I enjoyed this one. Erin, Cole and the hunt for the diamond mine kept me entertained. I anticipate that I'll read more of Lowell's books.
TIGER BY THE TAIL!!.......2006-01-08
Altho some of Ms. Lowell's books are confusing to read, this held my interest from beginning to end. I have read her books on Jade and Amber which I liked, but wasnt too crazy about "Always Time to Die."
Interaction and romance between Erin Shane and Cole Blackburn was intelligent and interesting. Both were strong and well fleshed out. The diamond trade was a fascinating study; not as endless as some of her theses on gems. Altho this book was updated, I accepted the story as it was. Held my interest from beginning to end. I thought the end came too quickly and would have liked a longer solution to the romantic upheaval and final reunion.
All in all, it was not a dull read. That's all I ask!!! :D:D:D
Very Good, Minor Complaints.......2005-12-12
I liked this novel very much. Photographer Erin Shane inherits her great-uncles land in Bumble, Australia. Because of the possible presence of rare, undiscovered diamonds, the land is coveted by key international players, governments, and the diamond cartel. With so many interests at play, it is hard for Erin to know who is a friend and who is an enemy.
Cole Blackburn is a diamond expert, and is hired to help Erin discover her legacy. This is taut storytelling at its finest, with enough intrigue, suspense, and romantic tension to hold the reader's interest throughout. Lowell's knowledge of the global diamond trade, diamond mining, and Australia are impressively researched and expertly woven into the story. This is one of her best contemporaries.
My biggest complaints, enough to dock one star, are that Lowell is too crazy about equating the diamond trade with "riding the diamond tiger" (the original title of the short story this novel is based on). I get the analogy, and got it the first 25 times it was used. Its overuse throughout the story begins to wear on the reader. I also feel that the ending is rushed. After taking the time and building the suspense with Cole and Erin's journey in the harsh terrain of the Outback, I feel let down that a lot of action happened behind the scenes between their eventual emergence from Crazy Abe's land and the ending of the book. I would have appreciated more attention to their struggle to find one another, romantically speaking.
Overall, this one is definitely worth reading.
My favorite Elizabeth Lowell book ever.......2005-03-25
This book grabs you in the begining and pulls you along through the entire 452 pages. It's fast moving with great details, but the story doesn't get bogged down in detailed description of the countryside etc. There's just a touch of romance, but the hunt for the mine is the real story line.
I didn't realize that Elizabeth Lowell was Ann Maxwell so I never would have read this book w/ out it being republished under the Lowell name. Now I will be looking for Ann Maxwell as well.
If she'd just finish out the Donovan family stories.....
sham package.......2005-02-13
when I opened my parcel from Amazon and started to read the back cover blurb on "Death is Forever", I realized that it is an updated version of a book I already had on my bookshelf, namely "The Diamond Tiger". I'm very upset; if I had realized that this book was an updated reissue I would never have bought it. Up to now I bought all of Elizabeth Lowell's books purely on the strength of her name and therefore I'm very disappointed that as a faithful reader of her books I'm not made aware that this book is an glorified reissue. If you look at the official book description on the Amazon.com page you can find nothing there to indicate that this is a reworking of a novel originally published under another title more than ten years ago.
I give the book 2 stars, because I really liked the story the first time around, but I hate to be duped. I don't know if I ever will buy another book of hers. If you like her novels, than try to get your hands on the original, instead of supporting this sham package.
Book Description
Nobody's Baby But Mine
Genius physics professor Dr. Jane Darlington desperately wants a baby but doesn't want her child growing up, as she did, feeling like a super-intelligent freak. So Jane needs someone. . . well. . . stupid to father her child—someone like legendary Chicago Stars quarterback Cal Bonner. But this good-looking good ol' boy is a lot smarter than he lets on—and Cal's not about to be used and abandoned by a brainy, baby-mad schemer.
This Heart of Mine
Molly Somerville's reputation for trouble started even before she gave away her fifteen-million-dollar inheritance. And her long-term crush on Chicago Stars football hunk Kevin Tucker doesn't help matters—especially since the gorgeous, Ferrari-driving, poodle-hating jock can't even remember her name! But then, one night, Kevin barges into Molly's not-quite-perfect life and proceeds to turn it upside down.
Customer Reviews:
Two great stories for the price of one!.......2006-05-04
You get a two for one with this purchase - two of the six (so far) books in the Chicago Stars/Bonner Brothers series of books. Each book in the series stands alone as a separate story, but the common thread in these two books is Kevin Tucker.
Nobody's Baby But Mine ~ Hilarity ensues when brainy physicist Jane wants to get pregnant by a dumb jock so her spawn won't be a lonely genius like she was, so she dons a big pink bow and presents herself as a very inept hooker to Chicago Stars QB, Cal Bonner. When Cal finds out that he was used for stud services, he insists on becoming more than a donor and the two get married and move to his hometown to wreak havoc in each other's lives, as they follow the rocky yellow brick road to love. This is the best story of the series. (****)
This Heart of Mine ~ artist and children's author Molly acts on her crush over QB Kevin Tucker, which results in pregnancy. They are forced by her sister and brother-in-law (who manage and coach the Stars respectively) into a loveless marriage which soon turns to tragedy. The tragedy wakes them both up to realize their true feelings for each, cleverly played out in the pages of Molly's books. This is the most heart tugging book in the series. (***)
Book Description
From USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Boyle comes the first book in a fun, new series, The Bachelor Chronicles, revolving around the lovely matchmaking girls of Miss Emery's Establishment for the Education of Genteel Ladies.

But in a stroke of fate, they meet again years later when Jack has to collect his disgraced niece from Miss Emery's Establishment for the Education of Genteel Ladies, where Miranda is now teaching. Though Jack doesn't recognise her and she wants nothing to do with the scoundrel who caused her ruin, the students are all atwitter at the attraction that crackles between them. A Cute Read but too Ho-Hum (C+ Grade).......2007-08-10
Poor Miranda. She is yet another heroine who is considered ruined because she was caught kissing a rake when she should have been listening to the opera. Well, Jack the rake thought she was his mistress and it was dark, so why not grab her and give her the kissing of her life!
They were caught and Miranda was sent to the outreaches of the wilderness, JUST FOR KISSING!! Ugh.
But what impressed me about this heroine, is that she said to heck with mom and dad and went out on her own to teach and save money. But she stil dreams about that one kiss! Aww to be innocent again.
Years later, Miranda changed her name and became Jane- a spinster teacher. But Jack comes into the picture again and for some reason he is so attractive to this uptight spinster with the gorgeous red hair. Jack is the poor hero who was cut off because of his dasterdly kissing and lives in an empty mansion with no money. But through a comedy of errors, Mirana aka plain Jane and three of her students invade his privacy.
Boyle has written a cute little read, with some comedy and lustful glances from the hero and heroine. Will Jack figure out who Jane is? And what about those pirates that just pop up?(Probably to add something to the plot at least!)
This is not her best and the passion you expect is a little boring for my tastes. If you know what "Avonization" means,a then this book is the perfect example. This is the second book in the Bachelor Chronicles.
Simply a ho-hum read.

Why did I buy this book?.......2007-04-15
I had previously read only one short story by Elizabeth Boyle in the anthology titled HERO, COME BACK. I wrote a review for that book and stated that I loved all the stories except.....yep, EB's. So, why did I buy this book? I obviously did not read my notes before placing the order.
This one (even though it is a full length story) will fare no better with me. I did not like it. If you don't want to find out what happens in the book I would recommend you stop reading now.
I was not enjoying the book, the plot, nor the characters but I had decided to read on because surely at some point Jack would come to realize he shared an historical event with Jane (Miranda) and everything could move on from there. Well! This author asked me to swallow a series of events which do not make logical sense to me. Miranda (Jane) was "ruined" by Mad Jack at the opera when he kissed her. I'm O.K. so far. Her parents (both parents, mind you, mother and father) were so title mad that they saw her ruination as the end of their plans for the future. They banished her to live with relatives but that is not all they did. Now it gets really stupid. They told everyone she had died and even had a funeral for her!!! She (Miranda) did not know this. She lived with one set of relatives until they both died. After moving to live with the second set of relations Miranda rebelled and decided to go teach at the school where she had been a student. Miss Emery made her living teaching and training young ladies from well-to-do families. She would have kept up with how her former students were doing. She read all the papers from London. Are we supposed to believe that she knew nothing of Miranda's disgrace? Are we supposed to think that she did not read in the papers that Miranda had died? How could she not have known, even if it had just been through gossip from her students and their parents? Four years after her banishment Miranda learned that her mother had died through the newspaper. People read those things with a vengeance because it was their most obvious source of news. For Miranda (now Jane) to never know that she had been killed off by her parents was just too much for me to swallow. And to have her hear it from Jack (even though at this point he still thought she was Jane) added a dimension which made me cringe. Her parents were so awful they would prefer to have her dead rather than married to him? Her father thought Jack would just spend all the dowry money so "let's tell everyone Miranda died" instead of accepting his offer of marriage? Yet when her father died he bequeathed his entire fortune to "Jane Porter". The whole book lost me right there.
I read it all. I didn't like it when I started and I didn't like it when I finished, but I was curious about what the author was going to do with all those characters. This book is a part of The Bachelor Chronicles and we met several characters who were obviously in previous books during the telling of this tale. I would imagine that some or all of the girls in this story go on to books of their own. Luckily for me, I don't have to worry about them any more. They can all go do all the improbable things this author can dream up but I will not be participating in the train wreck.
Mad Jack and Miranda Rock.......2006-08-11
It is character that always pushes a book from "nice read" to "memorable" for me and This Rake of Mine has characters in spades. Mad Jack and Miranda are a terrific couple and the supporting cast is interesting and well used to advance the main story. I loved the initial set up of how the fact that the hero and heroine's pasts crossed created both of their present conditions. I will be looking forward to Elizabeth Boyle's next book.
"Proper has its time and place...".......2006-06-02
I was up till mid-night finished this book. It was pure historical romance with splash of mystery. Miranda's is 'ruined' by a rake and is sent to the country. Jack the Rake is also sent to the country because his brother the Duke has had enough of his embarressements. The book starts nine years after the kiss/ruin. The truth comes out over time and Miranda and Jack must face the truth. If you enjoy this genre I would also check out The Lady Lies The Lady Killer and The Lady's Code by Samantha Saxon.
Well written...but over ambitious *Spoliers*.......2006-05-15
Where to begin? This story had me shaking my head from page three. Nothing in the *story* is believable. From the mistaken identity to the so-called esponiage storyline. Personally, I couldn't beleive the leap frog conclusions these characters jumped to from moment to moment. (See, Lord John's musings once a man's button fell from Jane/Miranda's sewing basket.) I didn't understand at all how or why Aunt Josephine faked her death. If Lord John and his staff where secret agents, then what's with the musings of selling his unexpected guest. Why wasn't the King, paying for the release of his agents instead of a broke and banished ton member? And who bought Miss Porter decorum act? If getting caught kissing a rake could ruin a woman, what did it say about the four of them sleeping under a single man's roof---for several days? I don't buy a vast land only has one exit from the property--cut across the grass. The romance was comletely lacking. Where was the meeting of minds, becoming friends. Everything was based off a kiss--a drunken kiss at that. What happened to Bruno? He started off as an interesting character and disappeared completely from the book. I think the book would have been better with out the esponiage story. There were too many coincidences. For a while there I thought the ghost of Josphine was also playing matchmaker, too, until you find out she's alive. Then, I was wondering who was whispering all those *remember* in the character's ears. Bottomline, I never connected to any of the characters and found myself just trying to get through it because of the $5.99 price tag. I mean, c'mon, that's almost the cost of two gallons of gas.

Outstanding and Comprehensive.......2002-03-13
This is the best guide to the Superstitions I have found, it has many hikes in it, as well as the lore and legend of the region and all its past inhabitants. The pictures are in black and white, but the trail descriptions are so good, you can visualize it in color! Excellent information about the difficulty ratings, the trailheads, what you might need to take, weather patterns, and lots of info of past denizens of the region and things you might encounter from those times. All of this, along with some of the most interesting terrain available and scenic landmarks, what more could a hiker want. Get the boots and the pack and head out!!
A fascinating book!.......2001-01-29
Even if you're not interested in hiking, the history herein will fascinate you. And who knows, you may wish to take up hiking as a hobby just to see the places described here!
A highly recommend book you will use over and over again........1998-12-31
The trail descriptions are well done. The topographical maps make this book a tool for any hiker. A "History and Legends" segment after each hike adds to the excitement.
Great Hiking Book with clear trailguides and good stories........1998-10-20
This is an outstanding hiking book on this area. It brings to life the stories and legends of the Superstitions while giving the hiker step by step instructions to the trails. The photos add to the stories and help the reader with visual images of the characters or trails. One of the best hiking books I have ever read. The format is direct and helps the reader to follow the trails and the related stories. Recommended book for anyone interested in the History of Arizona and the Superstition Mountains. Also an indespensible tool while hiking the Wilderness Areas of the Superstition Mountains. Great Book !!

One of the best.......2000-10-22
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I almost never read a book twice, but I have read this one over and over again. It is sweet, passionate, and extremely romantic while mixing in a little intrigue. The mystery is actually very well written and mingles well with the romance factor. I highly recommend this book.
