Just O.K........2007-09-28
I read this book fairly through in trying to determine where and what to do Honduras. Afterwards I ordered the Moon handbook of Honduras and was much more impressed with the maps, detailed descriptions and the quantity of information. Just the better book period.
Another Score for Lonely Planet and Central America Fans!.......2007-02-16
As you would expect a Lonely Planet guide to be, this book is thorough and complete with gorgeous color photos and many maps. We are headed to Honduras via Roatan on February 17th and will be taking this book along! I purchased it to give as a gift but I couldn't help sneaking peaks in it before I wrapped it!
Lonely planet 'Lonely'.......2007-02-16
This is one of the few books solely on Honduras and their coverage of all aspects of travel there is excellent. Specifics such as language help, money, health, and transportation are well defined. Plus a good read for history.

How to get from Here to There (and where to stop in between).......2000-02-24
This book was one of the most important references my wife and I used on our passage from Seattle to Skagway. Not only did it give us ideas on where to go the next day, but where to hide in case the weather didn't cooperate. A must have reference for every boater cruising the Inside Passage.

Indispensible.......2007-01-04
Not to be trite, but this book is an absolute must for anyone who seriously cruises Chesapeake Bay including its approaches. Superb detail and illustrations compliment a clear, carefully worded text. I have and use two other cruising guides for additional information but always start and end with this book.
The very best guide for the gunkholer.......2006-09-25
I have two copies of the 2001 edition: one aboard my sailboat in Annapolis and the second in my office. Most of my use of the book has been in the middle Chesapeake. In crawling up and down the Magothy, Severn, South, West, Rhode, Chester, Wye, and Tred Avon Rivers this book has provided helpful insight into what I would find. This book and the Maptech chart book are all you need to find your way to and through the backwaters of the Chesapeake.
Cruisers.......2006-03-17
We have a power boat but found this book to be very informative & helpful. We are planning our trip, have not been to the Chesapeake in about 25 years, and have found this book the best yet in our preparations. We like to anchor out and this book is informative not specifically focusing jumping from marina to marina like many guides do.
Wanna-be gunkholer happy with this book:-).......2002-04-24
In addition to telling you where facilities, anchorages, and other interesting local points of interest are, he supplies invaluable lessons only learned in the school of hard knocks. Valuable mariner lessons were included on weather prediction, inlet navigation, and other techniques tailored to use in the Chesapeake bay. The book was very well done, and I hope to set off on a cruise in the very near future.
Excellent book.......2001-02-19
If you cruise the Chesapeake, you must have this book. I have read non better.
Book Description
Towering live oaks guard old secrets and powerful forces that even the spirited Bay Tanner can’t control. . . .
A freak summer storm has Bay Tanner, sometime private investigator, cooped up with her ailing father at his antebellum mansion near Hilton Head. Desperate for a distraction, Bay recovers a cooler bobbing along on the incoming tide. What she discovers inside will plunge her into a world of ancient magic where the power of the “root” has held sway since the days of the slave row. Suddenly, mysterious people and strange incidents, including a near-fatal accident, force her to realize that she may have unleashed something she can neither understand nor escape.
Meanwhile, her investigation into the simple case of a runaway wife turns deadly. The police are eager to nail the wealthy, prominent husband for murder, but Bay’s instincts tell her there’s more to the story. Sheriff’s Sergeant Red Tanner, her late husband’s brother, warns her off the case, but Bay’s never been good at taking orders. Soon she’s working full-time to defend her client, who may not be as innocent as Bay would like to believe.
Time and again, every trail leads back to a mystical commune in the tangled backwoods of Beaufort County and to one of its leaders, a charismatic woman who believes in the real and malevolent power of the old ways. To find a killer, Bay must travel to the heart of this woman’s world—and not everyone will escape the spell of Sanctuary Hill.

KUDOS!!! Bay Tanner series leaves reader wanting MORE and MORE!.......2007-07-24
For the readers of the low country sleuth Bay Tanner, this will NOT be a disappointment! Continuing her saga of suspense, surprise and a little romance, she continues the involvements of Hilton Head, Presqu'isle and Gullah characters with surprises along the way. This one is the BEST yet, leaving a desire for the immediate sequel to one of the South's leading mystery women!
Best Bay Tanner Mystery To Date.......2007-06-01
I have read all of Kathryn Wall's Bay Tanner mysteries and I think this one may be the best -- by a hair. As usual, Wall evokes the hot summer setting of the low country so completely that I experience strong cravings for sweet tea and feel overheated just reading the book. In this novel, Wall takes on racism in the Low Country, in a complex and compelling way that challenges the reader to think in new ways about old problems that die hard. This context offers Wall the opportunity to develop some likeable characters even more completely, including Lavinia Smalls, the judge's care taker, as well as Eric, Bay's partner in her detective agency. I missed Bay's more compelling romantic interests of the past, although things heating up with her brother-in-law Red evoked shock, horror, and perverse fascination. The night scenes at the compound are downright creepy -- in a good way. I read this book in two days, because I could not put it down. I loved it! In sum, I found this mystery the most realistic and compelling this far in an absolutely fascinating series. I hope there will be many more Bay Tanner mysteries to come. Are you listening, Ms. Wall? Or should I say Ms. Kathryn?
strong entertaining regional mystery.......2007-05-19
An unexpected storm socks the South Carolina Lowcountry coast stranding private investigator Bay Tanner at the home of her ailing father. Stepping outside the luxurious antebellum mansion, Bay grabs a floating cooler. When she opens it expecting inside food or drink, she is stunned to find the corpse of a newborn.
She informs Sheriff's sergeant Redmond "Red" Tanner, who also happens to be the brother of Bay's deceased husband; her in-law tells her not to investigate as he knows how her curiosity keeps the cat in trouble. She ignores his warning rant because she believes the key to identifying the mother and perhaps the killer is the strange charm the victim had around her neck. At about the same time realtor Dumars hires Bay to look for his missing wife. When the spouse is found dead her client is the prime suspect. Though she thinks he is innocent, she detests what she believes is his disrespect for the dead as he sleeps with another woman while his wife lies in the morgue. She considers dropping him as a client rationalizing that her contractual consideration was achieved when the corpse was found.
The realistic portrayals of the characters especially Bay and Red make for a strong entertaining regional mystery. Bay has several dilemmas to consider making her seem human as she suddenly has two men wanting her and a moral quandary re Dumars. Fans of the series will appreciate this superb whodunit that brings Beaufort County alive through a fully developed cast involved in two homicides.

but the proceeds DO go for a good cause.......2007-07-03
Maybe it is because it's a special order book and it took OVER 2 months after paying for it that it finally appeared... maybe the anticipation made it impossible for the book to stand up to my expectation. It's a nice book.. but there's more pages with no photos than I would have thought. And lots of the photos are of people, which would be fine if there were LOTS of photos of the landscape. This book has a few nice photos but after being to Roatan and seeing for myself and even bringing home a few spectactular pictures, I would have thought a professionally made book would blow me away... and it didn't. It's a nice book. But it's not as good as it could have been.
Beautiful photos os the Islas de Bahia.......2006-04-26
This book takes you right there! The images are lovely and catch the flavor of the islands very well. I wish there were more photos of the rest of Guanaja but it's still very nice.

terrific regional mystery .......2006-06-17
After two difficult years, private investigator Erik Whiteside finally succeeds in finding the bad boy brother Win Hammond of elderly Miss Addie. Not long afterward, Win returns to Hilton Head allegedly to see his sister. However, Erik's "partner" at Simpson and Tanner, Inquiry Agents Lydia "Bay" Tanner wonders what the odious Win really wants. She and her family, friends of Miss Addie, plan to insure her sibling does not rip her off as they expect him try.
At the same time that the prodigal brother returns home, Bay and Erik have two other clients. Karen Zwilling better known to her customers as Britt Swensen, an escort service employee, wants Bay to find a male rapist, and a Georgia socialite Star Kennedy wants her to locate her beloved Wade, who vanished without a trace. When a badly battered corpse is found on the beach, Bay ponders if one of her cases just has been solved, but which one. Not sure, she keeps digging until she finds herself being yanked by the wealthy and the poor of the underbellies of society.
The sixth Bay Tanner regional mystery is a terrific entry as three distinct cases keep the Inquiry Agent and her wannabe partner Erik hopping. The Savannah feel to the delightful story line augments the investigations that Bay and Erik conduct. Fans of Southern heated mysteries will want to read Kathryn R. Wall's latest Georgia peach escapades.

Good vacation read.......2006-07-11
This is the first book that I read in this series, and the first book by this author.
She writes about the Hilton Head/Beaufort area of South Carolina-the low country.
The book starts out with a missing person. As the book goes on, so does the body count. Lots of surprises.
I probably would have enjoyed this book more, if I read some of the previous books in this series, since there are a lot of reocurring characters and references to other story lines that were not fully explained. This book is a very quick read, perfect for a plane.
Excellent story with surprise ending.......2005-10-15
Great reading! I enjoyed following Bay Tanner's new adventure - some familiar old faces reappeared and interesting new characters found their way into Bay's life. Lots of great descriptions of this beautiful part of the country made the story come alive, and the ending was a real surprise! A must-read for any Bay Tanner fan - also perfect for anyone who likes a good mystery.
A new fan!.......2005-06-25
Lydia (Bay) Tanner's life has been a recent nightmare. Her husband Rob died violently and Bay experienced a summer of treachery and deceit that resulted in the death of a man with whom she had been close to at one time. And to keep herself and those she loves safe, she's dabbling in blackmail.
Just when Bay believes her life is settling into a reasonable facsimile of normalcy, Cart Anderson, son of Geoffrey Anderson (the man who died during the summer of treachery) confronts Bay about the death of his father. Bay and Alain Darnay (Bay's French romantic interest and an Interpol agent) have questions of their own for Cart. After they question him, he disappears. When Cart's car is found on St. Helena Island with blood inside, Bay and Alain are looking good for his murderer. And Bay's family connections (her father is a retired Judge) mean nothing.
Bay and Alain begin searching for answers to Cart's disappearance just as another murder takes place. Minnie Maude Bleeker is killed shortly after Bay and Alain visit her cabin with questions about Cart and the St. Helena fort.
When Alain 'takes a powder,' Bay asks her former investigative partner, Erik Whiteside and Gabby Henson, a local reporter, for help. The plot that begins unraveling could mean serious trouble for Bay, so serious, it could get her sent to prison or worse yet, killed.
Kathryn R. Wall's Resurrection Road is a fast-paced, thrilling ride into the life and personalities of its South Carolina residents. The tension is as heavy as the thick, muggy summer Hilton Head heat and the excitement is one continuous roller coaster ride. I haven't read any of Wall's previous works but I will. I am definitely a new fan.
excellent who-done-it .......2005-04-27
On Hilton Head Island, "Inquirey' Agent" Bay Tanner and her lover Interpol Operative Alain Darnay notice a car is following them. Darnay maneuvers it so they catch the teen and rough him up a little before bringing him to Bay's house to see why Cart Anderson was following them. They tell them he wants to know why Bay killed his father. Although Bay did not murder his dad, he was involved in a criminal scheme that went bad and he died in an accident.
After they let Cart go, he fails to appear at his grandmother's house and soon a missing person's report is filed. When Cart's car is found near Fort Fremont on Land's End, they visit the area and are welcomed by Minnie Maude Bleaker, the only person who lives in the isolated area. She hints that she knows what is going on, but is found dead on her living room floor before she talks. Bay and Alain become the prime suspects in her death and Cart's disappearance. Trying to find out who is behind the effort to frame them almost costs Bay her life.
RESURRECTION ROAD gives the reader a taste of what it is like living in the modern day (with especially the mint julep crowd) good ol' boy network and the migration of the Northerners. This is an excellent who-done-it with a real puzzle trying to figure out who was trying to frame the heroine and why. There are many viable suspects, including a police officer from the North so readers will find the story line totally fascinating. Kathryn R. Wall is a talented writer who is becoming a bright star in the mystery horizon.
