Customer Reviews:
Unfortunately, not Recommended.......2007-08-30
Why "unfortunately"? Because Chernev put a lot of hard work into this book. He DOES explain every move--even if he has to go back to obscure 1820s books to say something new about 1. d4 when we see it for the 10th time. What's more, he does this without, for the most part, repeating the old libels about the "crazy" Steinitz or the "sadistic" Alekhine, etc., used by some authors to make reading about chess "exciting" without real work. Also, Chernev's love of the subtle move and the brilliant combination come through in the book, making us all remember why we like chess in the first place.
Unfortunately, the book's analysis is simply bad. It is hard to blame Chernev for trying to simplify what is going on in complex positions--the book is, after all, aimed at beginners--but his simplification completely distorts the situation. Of the 30+ games in the book, almost *all*, apart from five or six, are symetrical open games (1. d4 d5 or 1. e4 e5) many of them using obscure openings few play nowadays (Colle system, King's gambit). Some of this is due to fashion. But a lot of it has to do with something Chernev constantly ignores or mistates, but is of cardinal importance--the *plans* of the two sides.
Putting things very crudely, The King Indian's Defense and other asymmetrical openings allow black to concentrate on other plans--"building a solid position" for example--instead of that of immediate control of the center and rapid development. Why? Because, as Botvinnik noted, with such "asymmterical" plans white's first-move advantage is less prnounced. Conversely, the King's gambit is now unpopular since the main plan for white--attack on the black monarch--had been shown to lead to no more than a draw against accurate play.
Not much of this gets into Chernev's book. For him, the only opening plans are "develop your pieces" and "control the center". For example, he says that the reason people play 1. ... Nf6 in reply to 1. d4 is "to not allow white to dominate the center with 2. e4". Similarly, he condemns 1. ... e6 is "less agressive" (in controlling central space) than 1. ... e5 in reply to 1. e4, but at least it "opens lines to two pieces", does not allow White to play the King's gambit, and is useful against "over-agressive players".
Talk about oversimplification! Chernev's analysis is, I suppose, helpful to absolute beginners, showing them what is wrong with 1. h4 intending 2. Rh3, or with 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 intending 2. Qxe5+ (which, after the "thematic" 1. ... g6, leads to 3. QxR, 4. QxN, 5. Qx anything she can get her hands on), though they too are left wondering why anybody ever plays "inferior" moves such as 1. c4 or 1. ... Nf6. For all others, Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move by Move" is so superior in every respect comparing the two would be pitiful. It's like, to quote Edward Winter, comparing a Rolce-Royce with a rattle-trap.
Such chess principles apply equally to life in general!.......2007-08-11
This book is must reading for any novice! I will never again see a chess board in the same way! Many people, books and films state that principles of martial arts or samurai philosophy apply to everyday life, so much so that they constitute a guiding philosophy. In Japan and China people apply principles from war and strategy books such as The Art of War and The Five Rings to the world of business, and to great effect. Now, many films have also tried to do this with chess, but usually fall short. They usually end up making some blah statement, such as, "We are all pawns," etc. This book contains many fascinating quotes and principles handed down from the masters. As I read them one thing that struck me was that many of these principles apply equally to real life. For instance, Chernev's main lessen in this book is that the right move is determined by the requirements of you position. You assess the situation at hand, you have a goal, and there are only certain actions that will bring that goal about. Thus, the action you take is determined by what circumstance required.
A Chess Classic.......2007-06-01
I recently worked through my copy of this book. I must say it was very enjoyable to play through the games and read Chernev's explanations of the moves and the reasons behind them. I think Chernev did a superb job, and this book is a great game collection for anyone interested in chess. Newer players will certainly learn a lot.
Good, but not the best book of its type.......2007-04-07
The idea of explaining the idea behind every move is a good. I wish that more books would do this for the Beginning and Intermediate level chessplayer.
There are several problems with this book; 1) The book is overly focused on the opening - it should spend more time going into the middlegame and endgame, and 2) It often would not answer the questions I had about a move or what was going on it the game, and 3) half the games are of the author, who is only a measly master. However, overall I can still recommend this book.
This book does not compare in quality to my favorite book, "Logical Chess, Move by Move, which just recently was updated."
Great for principles, not so great for move analysis.......2007-03-31
As the other reviews state, this book is a great way for beginners to learn general principles. However, I would recommend taking Chernev's alternative variation analysis, and in fact many of his tactical variations, with a large grain of salt, frequently they are not close to the best moves. Even his main line analysis is frequently quite wrong. For example, I'm going through game 19, and on move 15 black plays 15...Bd6. This is not a good move since it allows 16.c5!. But of the alternate move 15...Qd8, Chernev only writes "...does not look appetizing". In fact, 15...Qd8 stops white's 16.c5 and lets *black* play c5 in the next move or two, gaining equality. Playing ...c5 is what Chernev is beating up Black about in this and all the Queen's Gambit Declined games, over and over, and he misses when Black has a chance to play it!
There are many more examples of bad analysis in the other games like this. Just read through the games, absorb the general principles, and move on to more modern "move by move" books with more accurate analysis.
Book Description
Bestselling author, Hall-of-Famer, and master-teacher Robert Byrne is back with his most impressive effort yet: an exhaustive compendium of more than 350 pool shots that will take its place among the game's classic instructional books. Ranging from tickys to double-kisses and from jump shots to diamond systems, Byrne's Complete Book of Pool Shots takes players on an accelerated trip from pool kindergarten to graduate school. Most of Byrne's expertly diagrammed shots are not widely known and many are described here for the first time-in many cases, these are the secrets of a lifetime. Players of every skill level, including the most advanced, will find their game greatly strengthened by the clever moves Byrne has assembled.
For twenty-five years, Byrne's New Standard Book has been
"the definitive work on pool and billiards" (National Billiard Review). This new shot-by-shot reference will enable players to reach an even higher level. They'll have to read it before their opponents do.
Customer Reviews:
Probably good for beginners, or is it pros?.......2007-10-06
I consider myself decent at pool. I'm ranked as a 4 in APA 8-ball and have been playing on a frequent basis for the past 2 years. While this book is good, it seems to be entirely offensive shots. There are many instances where instead of attempting the shot shown in the diagram in the book, it would probably be better to try and play a safe (meaning you make a legal hit, but leave your opponent with a difficult shot afterwards).
Most of these shots in the book are difficult to make once, but are incredibly difficult for most of us to make on a consistent basis. If you want to win, you should be playing the percentages and often a defensive shot has a much higher probability of success than these offensive shots.
I would've liked this book better if it discussed the alternative shots that could've been taken, and mentioned the pros and cons of those decisions. Without it, it isn't very convincing that the shots shown are the best options.
Therefore, I think this book is good for beginners who just want to know some cool shots, or pros who are so accurate and precise that these shots are possible nearly 90% of the time.
Fantastic book.......2007-05-18
I have read through my copy of this book 3 times so far and I'm sure I'll read through it many more times in the years to come. Something in this book is bound to improve your game or at least your knowledge of what is possible. He exposes a good number of shots and concepts that are really not very difficult to grasp and execute *if* you know about them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to move beyond the intermediate skill level of playing pool.
My second copy.......2007-01-28
This is my second copy of this book. I gave it as a birthday present. It was well received.
Unlike "Byrne's New Standard Book of Pool and Billiards," which is 50% devoted to 3-cushion billiards, this book is devoted entirely to pool. It's about how to put the ball in the pocket, which ball to shoot, and don't forget not to leave your opponent a shot.
Byrne is good at this and explains the difference between what it appears is happening and what the balls are really doing. It is an enjoyable read and a book anyone who enjoys shooting pool should have.
350 moves Every Player Should Know.......2007-01-19
This book is great. My boyfriend loves it and is trying to learn all the shots.
The title speaks for itself.......2007-01-11
This is something not only to read again and again, but also to take to the tables and practice some to the set-ups with which you may have previously had trouble. The answers are there.

Handy overview.......2007-09-22
I bought this book to review my shots--and to give my fellow producer/director a quick education in terms and shot design.
The book is very good, giving 2 page briefs on various types of shots, including a list of films to look for them in, and a storyboard to show how the shot proceeds. the list of places where the particular shot has been used is especially nice, as it lets you go to the library of films and see how a shot works.
It is in a fairly large and somewhat awkward format being wider than it is high--it's better to keep this one in the office or at home to scan when thinking than to take out in the field--a field book would be nice, as it could be used to explain shots to the actors/subjects (I'm shooting a documentary and jargon is Greek to most people.)
Not what I expected.......2007-08-24
But then if I'd really paid attention to the title of the book I'm sure I'd have figured it out.
While I applaud Jeremys' interests in movies and his desire to make them and share his 'experience' with us this book does not actually teach you anything about how to set up these shots. All it does is point out shots that you will probably already know. One thing that really does grate is that instead of consulting an experienced DP to find out the names of these shots he has come up with his own, which he feels are more descriptive.
I'd say that if you have a very short history of watching films then perhaps there is something you can learn from this book. However, if you have any experience whatsoever with a camera this book will prove to be a waste of time and (sadly) money.
The illustrations are good. Of a storyboard level and at least give you an idea of how to represent an idea but sadly the book was let down by the fact it didn't really deliver anything useful.
The definitive shot guide..........2007-06-18
This book explains the language of film in a simple, visual style. In clearly grouped sections, it shows a large, clear visualization of the movement with a description of how it is achieved, and the name the industry recognizes for that move.
It covers all the basics, plus many unusual, technical or simply rarely used angles and moves, making it the definitive work for the indie filmmaker and above.
An awesome reference book.......2007-05-14
I've seen this book by Jeremy Vineyard tagged as simplistic and cursory. If you're a super-hip film school graduate who's been involved in the industry, this book may not be worth your time.
However, if you're an amateur, like myself, this book makes a great reference. I recently shot a short film and used this book extensively while storyboarding.
Easy enough for children and a good reference for the amateur filmmaker. I've definitely gotten my money's worth on this one.
Brilliant, a must have for film-makers.......2007-01-16
Just buy it! Explains every standard shot, with examples.
Book Description
As you walk down the street, a tiny microchip implanted in your tennis shoe tracks your every move; chips woven into your clothing transmit the value of your outfit to nearby retailers; and a thief scans the chips hidden inside your money to decide if you're worth robbing. This isn't science fiction; in a few short years, it could be a fact of life.
Spychips takes readers into the frightening world of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).While manufacturers and the government want you to believe that they would never misuse the technology, the future looks like an Orwellian nightmare when you consider the possibilities of surveillance and tracking these chips embody. Combining in-depth research with firsthand reporting, Spychips reveals how RFID technology, if left unchecked, could soon destroy our privacy, radically alter the economy, and open the floodgates for civil liberty abuses.

Pulp Fiction, Pop Science.......2007-09-20
Albrecht's book is a sensational account of what could happen if the laws of physics were suspended and all men were created evil. It is pure fantasy. One of the reviewers said that only in America can someone with such limited knowledge and no credentials write a book about something they know little about. This is a silly book with mistatements galore. It does a disservice to those people who are true privacy advocates but wish to employ technology in a privacy enhancing way. False statements give rise to false fears and that is what Ms. Albrecht is all about. She needs to take a course or two on RFID before she writes about it.
A must read - everyone should know about the uses of RFID to track items, people, ???.......2007-05-13
This should be required reading in schools and colleges - people need to know how RFID can be used - for example, prices being changed based on who is purchasing an item - all people need to know how RFID can be used ethically - and unethically. And it seems corporations are not too hung up on ethics -
Everyone should read it.......2007-04-18
This is not light reading, but I truly think every American should read this book! I have heard Dr. Albrecht speak on numerous occasions, and I think that most of us in our nation are sleeping while our freedoms are chipped away. (no pun intended) Our right to privacy is one of the most personal freedoms.
After reading this book, you will think twice about EVERY purchase you make again! Not to mention answering personal questions while doing ordinary business every day.
A MUST READ! This is a highly documented and well-researched book.
I just purchased an extra copy to loan out to others.
The Road to 1984.......2007-01-15
Like many people, I have tended to neglect the downside of new technologies. Even though we are bombarded with advertising these days, it never occurred to me that supposedly responsible corporations would stoop to the lengths described in this book, such as literally spying on my movements while I am shopping! Parts of the book were a bit repetitive, but it certainly made me realize how very easily all of us could be led onto the road to 1984 and away from the privacy and freedoms we have long enjoyed.
People need to Wake Up!.......2007-01-05
I've been following industry news on RFID and related technologies for quite some time. Industry tells us that this technology will "simplify your life" or "make life safer". And in some ways it does. However, there are other important points, some even more important than the safety aspects. These points are far from positive, ranging from an almost total lack of privacy in all aspects of our lives, to the centralizing of an amazing amount of information on, and access to, everyone, worldwide. One can only lay back and take this with a comfortable smile if they believe that nobody using this technology will ever have any ulterier, negative, or dangerous use in mind - now and into the foreseable future. Katherine Albrecht, and others she works with, have spearheaded reporting on this for a long time through the group CASPIAN (check it out online), and now this book brings together years of research and information and presents it in a very readable and instructive way. This book is not an anti-technology scare tactic. It simply balances the view and shows us that there are many things about technology that we need to be aware of, cautious about, and that we should not blindly accept all technology that is developed. Hopefully this book will reach the general population. This book would be a good study tool in schools.

On the dull side for me.......2007-10-01
I did not care for this book. The suspense was not there for me. I'm still scratching my head that the letters were referred to as "love letters." Also, she was a 30 something judge and still lived at home. I did not care for Reed either. Where was the love??? They had great sex and obviously chemistry. I saw right away where this book was going and that's where it went.
Reading this reminded me of a soap opera where folks were or had been sleeping with each other, kids were made and not properly acknowledged, folks screwed up their lives by being...less than smart....in their youth blah blah blah.
I enjoyed this author's Close Enough to Kill!
A touch of suspense, a dose of mystery and a lot of romance.......2007-01-29
When Ella Porter was sixteen, her father, Webb Porter, a successful prosecutor at the time, put behind bars an eighteen year old who killed his stepfather. Once Reed Conway was sent to prison, and to infuriate Webb, Reed sent a couple of very sexual letters to Ella before Webb put a stop to his letter-writing privileges.
Fifteen years later, Reed Conway is finally leaving prison...for good behavior, and he's determined to discover the identity of the person who slit his stepfather's throat and left him to take the blame. At the same time, Ella, now a circuit court judge, has started receiving sexual letters again. Of course, it's obvious Reed is behind it. Right?
The killer is desperate to send Reed back to prison, so terrorizing Ella begins to escalate from mere letter writing to phone calls and eventually to murder.
I enjoyed the suspense of this one, including Ella and Reed's obvious attraction to each other. I love Beverly Barton's prose. She creates such memorable characters and such wonderful twisty plotlines. I was thoroughly entertained.
My reason for rating this book only four out of five is because this is not my favorite Barton book. I think her later works are much better.
Good Romance.......2006-11-28
Beverly Barton is a At writer. I am a huge fan and so far my favorite is Close Enough To Kill. But this one was still good. For me it fell more on the romance side than the suspense. It seemed to have a few different relationships going on in the story and it was nice to see them all tied up in the end. Reed is a ex-con who gets out of prison at the begining of the story for a crime he did'nt commit. His goal is to find out who really killed his stepfather. He becomes involved with Ella throughout the story. Ella is the adopted daughter of the lawyer who put Reed in prison fifteen years ago. I felt the sexual tension with Ella and Reed to be very good. I did'nt think Reed really tried at all to try to clear his name, he kept saying thats what he wanted to do but never did. And Ella seemed a little to straight laced always trying to be the perfect daughter that mid way through the book I am glad to say that she finally stands up for herself and Reed. This book was a little lacking in the suspense part for me but still a great book. I would recommend it highly! Barton never fails to disapoint.
Bad boy parolee and judge make a hot duo.......2006-10-26
Wrongly convicted of murdering his step father, Reed's been released from prison after serving a 15 year sentence. Though he earned a college degree and nearly a master's, the only job he can get is as a mechanic at his cousin's garage. He is dedicated to finding the real culprit behind the murder, regardless of the cost. When judge Ella Porter, daughter of the DA that put Reed away starts receiving nasty letters similar to the ones Reed sent to her while in prison, she confronts him, not realizing that someone sinister will stop at nothing to make sure Reed is back in jail. Ella has always been drawn to Reed, and finds that the forbidden passion he promises is too much to resist. Reed doesn't count on actually falling for the daughter of his enemy, and soon she's joining him in his quest for the truth, much to her parent's displeasure (yes, she's 30 and still lives at home!).
Could it be Ella's father Webb Porter, now a senator with a roving eye and zipper, and a shared past with Reed's mother; could it be Judy, Reed's harried mother who suffered greatly at the hands of her sadistic husband; could it be Reed's sister Regina, whose near rape at the hands of her stepfather have cause irreparable damage; or could it be Ella's aunt and uncle who also share a sordid past with the deceased. With plenty of suspects, the two have their work cut out for them!
Ella and Reed make a striking duo. And boy does this couple sizzle! Barton's gothic tale of murder, forgiveness, and love has plenty to keep you entertained, though I felt there were far too many romantic entanglements for a single novel, causing some of them to not be as developed as they could have been.
Great Romantic Suspense.......2006-07-18
What a great book. I have never read a book by this author before but I will now look into her other books. I got very caught up in the characters and stayed up too late many a night to find out what happens. Reed is a great bad boy and makes for a steamy read.
Book Description
CON MAN
In December 1989, in upstate New York, Gary C. Evans, 35, a master of disguise and career criminal who had befriended David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz, began weaving a web of deadly lies. Evans told a female friend that Damien Cuomo, the father of her child, had deserted her. Of that he could be certain, since he'd killed Cuomo, and subsequently struck up a ten-year romance with the woman while tricking her into believing Cuomo was still alive.
LAW MAN
Evans first met New York State Police Senior Investigator James Horton in 1985, when Evans fingered Michael Falco, 26, as the brains behind their theft teamyet failed to mention that he'd murdered him. Then, two local jewelry dealers were killed. In 1997 Tim Rysedorph, 39, another old friend, went missing. Was Evans responsible? Horton launched a nationwide manhunt to uncover the truth.

Outstanding True Crime.......2007-04-30
I am an avid and continual reader of true crime. In EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE, I feel M. William Phelps has reached the level of some of the truly fine crime writers. (Jack Olsen comes to mind.) This book has all the prerequisites for great true crime: a fascinating story; intelligent literate writing; and meticulous and exhaustive research. Reviews of one of Phelps' more recent books, MURDER IN THE HEARTLAND, chastise Phelps for a sloppy rush job. I can assure you that this is not the case with EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE. This book was clearly a long time in the researching and the writing, and it presents to the reader the reasons contributing to the making of one of the more interesting sociopaths you'll read about. And Gary Evans is indeed a sociopath of the first order.
Additional points for lovers of this genre: the book is well edited. I recall no typos, and very few misused words. The picture section is also interesting and adds to the book, although in the paperback copy I read, the pictures will have fallen out by the 3rd reading.
And, thank God, there is NO interminable courtroom scene description.
I recommend this book unreservedly and totally, even to those who are not in particular true crime devotees.
A Real Life Version of Cops & Robbers.......2007-03-12
In true M. William Phelps style, we are introduced to State Officer Jim Horton and professional burgular Gary Evans who, through a series of 496 attention-gripping pages, play a real life of game of Cops & Robbers or Cat & Mouse yet amazingly establish a connection...a friendship, in a skewed sense.
If you are like me and don't mind long, very detail books, you will enjoy this one. Readers are provided with an indepth look into the life of Gary Evans from his meager beginnings; all the while, readers also enjoy a clearly present background of Investigator Jim Horton. And, although not as detailed as the main "characters," the backgrounds of those involved with Evans, whether they be paramour or victim, is also provided to help the reader develop an idea of how that person became involved with Evans and, often later, Horton.
I absolutely loved this book. This is one I would consider to be in the Top 10 of Best Written and All Time Favorites.
Can you say narcissist??.......2007-01-16
Wow, what a complex man Gary Evans was. And a huge narcissist if you ask me. This book grabbed me from the beginning and the ending was not what I had expected at all. Matt as usual your thorough investigating on the events are excellent! And some people's reaction of Jim Horton and his relationship with Gary is not fair. I bet if Jim knew earlier and suspected way earlier what Gary really was he would never worked with him as a CI. This is a must read.
"Every Move You Make".......2006-11-10
Fascinating True Crime Story. Very well written and fast paced.
The Best I've Read This Year!.......2006-08-10
If you love true crime, and if you've got a few hours to burn, buy this book. There is something here, something that reaches out of this book and into your mind. You won't put it down, and you won't forget it long after the book is finished. Its like nothing I've ever read before. You are there. The facts, as they come to light, are presented in such a way as to make you feel YOU are the detective. Totally awesome!

Every review must have a purpose.......2004-09-21
The book does not give you positions to go along with the telling you "THE PURPOSE". My chess teacher says, "it is good to say something general, but much better if you have a position as an example". Ha, Ha, in a way I am doing the same thing this book does!!!! But not really since this book itself is the "position".
If you want a lot of words, but not the positions or moves to go along with it, then this book is for you. I would rather have a book that uses real examples using real positins and moves than just lots of silly words. This author could do much, much, much better....
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-04-23
This slim volume, which draws life and business lessons from the game of chess, is one of the better self-help and self-improvement books you're likely to pick up. At only 115 pages, double-spaced, and a mere 20,000 words, the entire book is about the length of a chapter in most other books in its category. Author Bruce Pandolfini includes just enough chess lore to keep the book relevant to chess, but not so much as to overwhelm a chess-averse reader. He writes concisely, as a chess player plays, with a great deal of concentration and quick, quiet decisions expressed in single sentences. The book offers several fine aphorisms, the sort you will remember long after you have put it down. But it's not the kind of book you will want to put down. Fortunately, we are glad to note, it is small enough to fit into a purse or computer bag along with everything else you carry.
SAY CHESS!.......2004-04-20
If you're looking for that perfect in-transit book to skim through, without straining your shoulders but working your grey matter, this slim treatise (115 pages, double spaced) makes for a pretty good fit.
Simply put, it draws some very thoughtful life and business lessons from Chess. Don't worry, it includes just enough chess material to keep the book relevant to the strategic game, but not so egregiously that it puts off people unfamiliar with chess (you know what a rook is though, right?)
The author writes almost like a chess player: with concentration and quick, quiet decisions expressed in single sentences. Which makes this book not only a pretty neat source of business thoughts, but also one of the better self-help and self-improvement books I've ever read.
You'll end up with a fistful of aphorisms if you really read, and while it may look a bit steep for its slim size, it's absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.

A Brilliant Book.......2004-01-15
This is a brilliant book. ... It certainly has some useful things to say about business and strategic decision-making, but it is a chess book, written so clearly and universally that even a person focused solely on business and nothing else could still understand and benefit from it. It does not go into chess moves or combinations, although the few times he does talk about them he makes them come alive, such as: "Sometimes a move is right only because it's a little wrong," or "Some moves explain themselves." Pandolfini presents chess ideas so cogently that anyone can appreciate them and see their larger import: "To see what they see, sit where they sit." That is the beauty of what Pandolfini has done here. He has merged straight chess and general culture to appeal to everyone with a discriminating mind. Anyone can read it, even children. Anyone can gain from it, even people stuck in their office. But while the book reaches out to cultivated businesspeople, I see it as a chess book, one of the most stimulating I have encountered in many years.

Book Description
Gruesome slasher murders are spreading terror in San Francisco. The pressure is on the police force to track down the killer before another young woman is found, throat cut, body abandoned. Homicide Inspector Kate Gillespie is picked to lead the search with her partner, old-timer Sam Scolari.
This is the case that could make Kate's career. But the next victim stops her in her tracks--Sam's ex-wife. All evidence points to him. He goes underground, leaving Kate alone to prove his innocence, or his guilt.
Kate has to find the killer before the cops find Sam. Complicating matters is Mike "Torrid" Torrance, the sexiest Internal Affairs officer ever to carry a badge. He's watching Kate, an assignment that brings them far closer than they expected. Without a partner she can trust . . . with a killer and a cop watching her every move . . . can Kate find the truth before it's too late?

A Great Beginning...........2002-11-23
This first book by Robin Burcell is a good read and a great beginning. It has the same pitfalls that many new authors seem to fall victim to; it is not as tightly woven as I would have liked and there is not enough insight into the characters. I also felt as if I had missed a previous book with more of the background of Inspector Gillespie. However, just as "A is for Alibi" (see Sue Grafton's alphabet series) wasn't a true indicator the series' potential, I believe future books by Robin Burcell will only continue to get better.
"Every Move She Makes" stars San Francisco Police Inspector Kate Gillespie, a smart, tough police office with a weakness for latte's and a certain IA investigator that she can't get too close to.... add into the mix an untrustworth ex, a solid mystery, and the beautiful background of San Francisco and you have all the ingredients of a good book. I hope Inspector Gillespie enjoys a nice long run, I am very much looking forward to more!
Never wanted to put it down!!.......2002-10-24
I loved this book!! I love Kate's character, her whole personality is very appealing. I was guessing through the entire thing trying to figure out what truly was going on and who was behind it. I enjoyed reading about the chemistry between Kate and Mike Torrence, they both basically felt the same but knew they couldnt pursue their relationship not only because of the case they are working on but because of their positions on the force. After I read this I quiclky went out and bought Fatal Truth by Robin Burcell, and it was so short compared to this one but equally great!! I definately cant wait for her next book!!
Spectacular!!!!.......2001-11-17
This was the best book I have ever read in my life!I hope Robin
Burcell will keep writing more books like these. If your bored with what your reading now, pick this book up you will NEVER be bored with this book!!
I stayed up late to finish this one!.......2001-10-11
The killer had been dubbed The SoMa Slasher. He prowled San Francisco, murdering women by slashing their throats. Homicide Inspector Kate Gillespie was picked to cover the case with her partner, a vet named Sam Scolari. But when Sam's wife was murdered (a medical examiner) the evidence pointed to Sam. Sam had disappeared, gone into hiding, occasionally contacting Kate.
Internal Affairs put Lieutenant Mike Torrance onto Kate's every move. Not only because of Sam being her AWOL partner, but also because Kate was getting death threats. Someone had tried to make good on those threats several times.
Now, throw in some thugs, more killings, stalkings, jealousy, and a lot of detective work, and you have the perfect thriller story to keep you guessing and keep you reading! I stayed up WAY past my bed time to see if I had figured it out correctly and how in the world Kate and Torrance would prove it! Patricia Cornwell has some heavy competition with Robin Burcell!
Here's a good read!.......2001-10-01
Kate Gillespie is a Homicide cop out to clear her partner Sam Scolari of murdering his wife. Read it in one afternoon and couldnt put it down. Nice dialogue, many witty comments from Kate. A light mystery with a minor romance and several characters to keep you interested. Will look for Robin Burchell again.

Book Description

Although chilled by the headlines, Megan is determined to get on with her life, landing a promising job and finding new confidence with a handsome, compassionate dance instructor. She'd vowed never to trust a man again. Now Regan finds herself swept away by a sweet, caring lover who seems too good to be true. What she doesn't know is that she's captivated someone other than the new man in her life. Someone who keeps himself carefully concealed in the last place anyone would ever think to look....One by one, women who look like Regan are turning up brutally murdered, their bodies found in the shallows of San Francisco Bay. Now someone is taunting Regan, making it clear that she will be his next victim....
Customer Reviews:
A bit predictable but an excellent story.......2005-09-26
Regan moved from Virginia to San Francisco following a painful divorce to stay with her sister Kat and niece Blair. She finds a rewarding job that allows her to use her writing skills and soon she is taking dance lessons and is finding herself falling in love with Peter, her dance instructor.
Regan's big assignment at work is to get the story behind an enigmatic internet icon of Home Run, Inc, Kevin Carrington, a reclusive genius who created games that have made him millions, but no one has managed to photograph or profile. A meeting with Kevin's surrogate father, Ed Johnson provides a little insight into Kevin's life.
Lurking on the streets of San Francisco is a serial killer who targets women that go clubbing and have red hair. Both Regan and Kat fit that description. But when Regan suddenly receives an animated death threat via e-mail, FBI detective Sam Sloan thinks that she is next on the killer's list.
While there are many red herrings, the identity and events surrounding the identity and capture of the killer are pretty obvious. The style of writing is excellent, and although I was pretty sure of the outcome, I was still committed to seeing how the events unfolded and was not disappointed. The subject matter, pretty dark at times was handled sensitively.
Another great romantic thriller from a master.......2002-10-03

Regan McKinney, after a painful divorce, moved across the country to San Francisco to start a new life with her sister Kat and her niece Blair. Regan has found a new job she enjoys which offers her plenty of opportunity. She also is on the right track in her love life, finding promise in her blossoming relationship with her dance instructor, Peter Smith.
Regan's life is getting back to normal as she begins to heal from her divorce. Things are looking rosy and she finds herself falling in love with Peter. Meanwhile, all around her, life is crumbling. A serial killer is on the loose, stalking the women of San Francisco. Every victim is left near the bay shores; and all of them eerily resemble Regan.
Now the FBI investigator, Sam Sloan, assigned to the case, his last before retiring, and Regan are in a race against time to unmask the vicious murderer. He has pegged Regan as one last partner in his dance to the death. Will they find him in time to save Regan's life?
Ms. Jones has a winner with this book. She grabs the reader's attention from the first paragraph and never lets go. She keeps one guessing who the murderer is, right up to the end. The novel is fast-paced and exciting, though slightly graphic in scenes, as is expected, considering the subject matter. Ms. Jones also uses a unique premise here, having a character suffering from multiple personality disorder. She tackles the subject with ease, handling it well and proving she did her homework for this subject.
The characters are well developed and multidimensional. Regan has a big heart, albeit a troubled one, and cares deeply for people. Peter is loveable, though pretty scatterbrained and mysterious. Sam, under his gruff exterior, has a heart of gold, which has been tarnished by his work. Hehas thrived? thrived on his lifestyle for many years, though it has steadily beaten him down. These three, and all the other characters are vivid, lingering in memory long after the last page is turned.
Ms. Jones has proven once again that she is a master of romantic suspense, and is on the rise to super stardom in the genre.
Boring book.......2002-06-01
I figured out who the killer was by reading the back of the book. Figured out why less than half way through the book. Very anti-climatic...
Great Disappointment.......2002-04-14
This is the worst book from Jill Jones. I've read all her books & have enjoyed many of them but her latest thriller was a great disappointment. The villian was so obvious that it makes the heroine appear silly.
Jill Jones has done it again!!!.......2002-03-28
In this novel, "Every Move You Make," Jill Jones continues her excellent talent of telling stories with true to life characters, reality, and pulse-stopping suspense. This a romantic suspense/thriller/mystery. I love it. Regan McKinney, the main charater, has just gotten over a divorce. She goes to San Francisco to be with her sister Kat, and her niece, Blair. Unfortuneately, there is a serial killer on the loose at the same time, kiling women who look very much like Regan. Regan vows never to trust another man again, but is swept into the arms of her dance instructor, Peter Smith. Little does Regan know that there is someone lurking in the shadows, watching her "every move." Wonderful novel, anyone who buys this book, don't leave it on the shelf, read it! I reccommend this to anyone who likes books in this genre.

Book Description
Change the way you move . . . and you can change the way you feel, the way you act, and the way you're perceived. That's the promise of EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE: Bodymind Exercises to Transform Your Life.
We've long known that changing our mental or emotional focus can help change our physical state (think of stress management for patients at risk for heart attacks or visualizations to improve athletic performance). It's the mind-to-body connection, and it's something that's readily accepted in today's world. Less well explored is the other side of the equation: the relationship between body and mind: Change your physical state and you can change your mental or emotional focus; change the way you move in deliberate, carefully prescribed waysthat is, repattern your bodyand you can repattern your mind, emotions, and spirit in ways that let you live your life more fully, more authentically, and more joyously.
Every Move You Make gives you practical tools in the form of ten basic movements that help stimulate and support changes you need to make your life work better. Also included are several partner exercises to improve the quality of your relationships. The movements are easy and relaxing to do, and are illustrated in photographs throughout the book. Chapters address different aspects of life: self-image, stress, career, creativity, relationships, sexuality, anxieties, and compulsions. You'll identify with the case studies of real people that Nikki Winston has worked withall of whom have successfully made the changes described.

The BodyMind Connection.......2004-05-17
Living in fear can immobilize you and make your life numb, but changing the way you move can help; it can break the logjam of fear and lower its intensity, so that you coexist gracefully with whatever frightens you. ~Nikki Winston
In order to liberate yourself from unhealthy habits, you can try many things. One of the best ways to refocus your entire being is to start to exercise on a regular basis. This might mean you walk or take a Tai Chi class. I have found that by exercising on a regular basis I make healthier choices and sugary foods are less appealing than a crunchy salad with a delicious dressing. Exercise also takes time which keeps me out of the mall. It hasn't kept me away from Amazon, so no luck there. ;)
Nikki Winston has a pleasant writing style and inspired me to start T'ai Chi. Her book helped me to understand why I should repattern my body in order to repattern my mind, emotions and spirit. It does seem to work. With the stress level I endured last week I should be an absolute wreck, but here I sit calmly typing away. When you exercise on a consistent basis, it does encourage clear thinking. Instead of getting into a panic about the way life changes in an instant, you just whip out one of your exercise tapes and spend time moving your body. Then, you will find you can deal with just about anything with a calm attitude.
This book is divided into three sections:
Change the way you move and change your life
BodyMind exercises to transform your life
Moving to address the issues in your life
You can use the BodyMind connection to handle fear, anxiety and stress. You can even use the exercises to learn new body language to find new relationships that are healthy and fulfilling. Do you want to live a more authentic life or follow your life's passion? Nikki believes in this system and I can say that exercise in general will give you a renewed sense of confidence.
Look for Nikki's "Tai Ji video, The Golden Door's Response to Stress."
This book is the perfect companion to any exercise program because it explains why exercise works and why various exercises can heal specific areas of your life. There are numerous real-life examples that explore the connection between the way we move and the condition of our inner world.
Chapter 14 has a lol moment of enlightenment. The Appendix has a list of suggested Affirmations like: "I am at peace," or "I see the beauty in life." These would be worth writing on cards to encourage a more positive mindset.

My personal remedy for emotional ills is to get into bed with a good book. Every Move You Make is a book that will calm your mind and give you something unique to think about. Once you start reading you are going to be excited about trying the exercises and also trying other healing exercises like Tai Chi.
The exercises in this book are similar to Tai Chi, but are much easier to learn. Step-by-Step pictures are helpful, but I'd recommend a video and this book.

Moving affirmations for everyday.......2003-11-15
Finally affirmations that make sense. This easy to read book gives you movements to help your life. Learn how every move you make affects what you are and what you recieve in life. The moving affirmations are clearly written with illustration to enhance your understanding. There is even a flip chart which creates a movie of the movements. Very clever.
This book is inspiring, with success stories throughtout. The movements are simple and you feel like the author is standing by your side as you learn them. You can practically hear her voice as you perform the movements.
Very exciting, I can't wait to do more Tai Ji!
