Group therapy made easy.......2007-09-17
Easy to read and follow. A great resource for learning the first time or needing a refresher
group process text .......2007-08-07
This book is a must in the field of counseling. Clear, thorough, and concise. Also, Amazon shipped so quickly I had it before many in my class who had ordered from different vendors.
Organized, thorough textbook for group therapy.......2006-08-01
Marianne and Gerald Corey have written a well-organized text. The information was provided in a logical order and in an easy-to-read format. It covers group process as well as basic practical advice for the group leader - how to form a group, screen clients, where to meet, how long the meetings should last, etc. The group therapy taught in its pages is based on a thinking, feeling, and behaving model that can be integrated into group practice with other theoretical orientations.
This book was used in a masters counseling class on groups, and half our class was based on our own experiential group. The sections on the different stages of a group were particularly pertinent as it mimicked our experience. My only complaint with this text is that in the final four chapters, there were perhaps too many group proposals. I tired of reading all of them but that could have been end-of-semester inertia.
Great Book.......2006-07-14
The book was great and helped me understand the porcess but my professor was also great. Great professor and great book=knowledge!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great for new students.......2007-10-18
I enjoy reading this book for my masters class. It is written for easy reading but is not dumbed down. Very thought provoking.
Good but wordy & ultimately unsatisfying.......2007-10-13
I had to purchase a copy of this book for an introductory masters course in ethics for counselors. I really like the book a lot, except that the chapters are incredibly long (often running 50+ pages apiece) for topics that do not require more than 20. What the author has done is ask contributing writers to add text and case studies that are often repetitive and unnecessary to the discussion. That strikes one star from a possible five.
The second strike is the ambiguity of the subject itself, which provides no concrete answers. This is inherit in ethics itself, but there needs to be solid answers for masters students who must, ultimately, take the licensure test to practice in their respective state. Without solid answers, I have no idea how to face the multiple choice final quiz (worth 50% of my grade) in my class. I am worried that this book is too queasy and uncommitted to my success to provide real-world answers to questions on these licensure tests that I HAVE to know! If I flunk this class (and anything below 80% is flunking at the masters level) it will be this book's fault. I am actually doing everything I possibly can to supplement my reading outside of this book to ensure I know enough practical, real-world answers to ethical questions so that I will get thru this weed out course in counseling. Ugh. Thanks for nothing, Corey & Corey. If I pass the course, I will come back and upgrade this review to three stars instead of two. Right now, I am too upset with your equivocations and ultimately unsatisfying answers to give you credit for something that I think you, ultimately, failed to do. That is: help a poor student pass the course.
Great resource!.......2007-09-20
This text is written in a way that helps the reader get a better understanding of the responsibilities we have when working in the helping field.
College Text Book received in excellent cond........2007-09-15
This book would be beneficial for anyone in the healthcare or helping professions. Opens your eyes to ethical concerns of people in these fields.

Book Description
Welcome to the Custer Hill Club - a men's club set in an Adirondack hunting lodge whose members include some of America's most powerful business leaders, military men, and government officials. Ostensibly, the club is a place to relax with old friends. But one fall weekend, the club's Executive Board gathers to talk about 9/11 - and finalize a retaliation plan, known only by its code name: WILD FIRE. That same weekend, a member of the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force is found dead. Soon it's up to Detective John Corey and his wife, FBI Agent Kate Mayfield, to unravel a plot that starts with the Custer Hill Club and ends with American cities locked in the crosshairs of a nuclear device. Only Corey and Mayfield can stop the button from being pushed, and global chaos from being unleashed... More chilling than yesterday's headlines and as prophetic as tomorrow's, Wild Fire will challenge you to question everything you thought you knew about your leaders and your country while thrilling you with suspense that builds with every page.
Customer Reviews:
Not Worth It.......2007-10-16
This was the first book by DeMille that I have read and I wasn't impressed. The basic plot was good, however, the incessant wisecracking by the main charactor was overbearing and obnoxious. And his prolific use of the f-word was crass and left the book severely lacking in terms of intelligent dialogue. Don't waste your money on this one; I'm sorry I did.
A must read.......2007-09-29
Wild Fire is the most powerful what-if scenario I've ever read in fiction. The intrigue and action are non-stop, and the novel is peppered with first class comic-relief. Not only was I unable to put Wild Fire down, but I also found it impossible to avoid laughing out loud every time the protagonist, John Corey, came up with another quip.
DeMille's view into the minds of fictional dangerous people at the top is frightening. He gives you the impression that this could happen. God help us all if it does, and pray that there's a Detective John Corey out there to stop it. This novel is a must-read.
not this time.......2007-09-27
I really wanted to like this book, but it was actually annoying. I really liked John Corey in Plum Island, less so in the Lion's Game, and hated him in Wildfire. the wisecracking was way over the top, and his wife came off as a lame straightman/sidekick.
I hope Mr. Demille doesnt do this in the sequel to his greatest work: The Gold Coast. That was the first book I read by him- luckily it wasnt this one!
The Usual Suspects.......2007-09-24
I read this book several months ago but held off writing a review, hoping my first impressions would improve with time. Alas, not so. De Mille's books are usually a reliable mixture of snappy dialogue and fast paced plots. The snappy dialogue is here in spades; John Corey is married and he and Kate engage in the usual banter. However, de Mille seems to think this is a substitute for a well thought-out plot. In this book we meet the bad guys (more on that later) and they proceed to lay out their plans in endless detail. In fact, the first 100 pages (at least it seemed that long) consist of the evil doers explaining all in a meeting that is laughable. We find that the bad guys (no spoiler here) intend to nuke one of our major cities. Just which one requires pages of discussion.
Once this meeting concludes the pace does pick up, but the "action" seems to consist of John and Kate driving around the countryside.
Now a word about the perps. Every author is entitled to his or her choice of bad guys. Is does help, however, if the choices are plausible and don't require too much of a stretch of ones imagination. In this case the proposed deed is the setting off of a nuclear device in one of our cities. Given recent history, one might suppose that this might be the work of Arab terrorists, etc. Not so. Here we have members of the FBI, CIA, and State Department. Heading up this group is, of course, a representative of the most evil group of all - - big oil.
De Mille can do much better than this sad sffort.
Wild Fier.......2007-09-23
Fun read interesting plot. It's a page tuner. If you are a fan of DeMille's other John Cory novels you will like this one. I read it in about a day and a half while on vacation.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Workbook.......2007-09-01
This was a textbook assigned for an online psychology course. This was one of the best "self-help" books I have ever read. This book is easy to read, plus each chapter has a section for activities pertaining to the topics covered. I learned a lot about myself from this book. I recommend doing the activities and answering the questions from each chapter to get the most out of this book. Authors make this a very interesting and uncomplicated read.
"Psychology in a Nutshell" An excellent resource. .......2007-04-13
This book in its 7th edition is well written and easy to understand. "I Never Knew I Had a Choice" is yet another fine work by the educational psychology team of Gerald and Marianne Schneider Corey and one that you do not have be a psychologist to appreciate. It is written so that anyone who is on a quest to search their inner-self can benefit from it.
What I like most about this book is its structure. Prior to the beginning of each chapter is a self-inventory questioner that opens up the mind of the reader by planting seeds of thought to germinate and encourages reflection on the upcoming pages. The questions are designed to boost the reader's perception and digestion of the the material.
I feel that if there was one psychology book any person could pick up and learn how to help themselves this book would be it. It is well rounded and well written. It is the kind of text that if one wanted to know what the basic tenets of psychology are all about in a nutshell, this is the book I would recommend.
It appropriately begins with an invitation to personal growth and transitions the reader to review and to reflect; first on their childhood and then adolescence setting up an internal foundation for which the reader can build upon on before going into adulthood studies and other theoretical constructs.
Chapter 4 covers the all-important theme of maintaining sound health practices and is a miniature lesson in health psychology. In the following chapters, the Coreys deal with the subject of stress and how best to manage it. They also cover the topics of love, sexuality, and relationships in the ensuing chapters.
In addition, the Corey's addresses the all-important subjects such as our search for meaning and purpose, the foundation of meaning, and the importance of embracing diversity. They illustrate well our values in action and challenge us to self assess with a discrimination index to see where our real values lie with concern to an area that is vital to human growth and evolution.
The book in the seventh edition, not too sure of the others, is dedicated to a student of the Corey's named Jim Morelock who died at the tender age of 25 years making their chapter on death and loss even more meaningful to the reader. If you are a searcher, you will love this most excellent and basic book on psychology.
Nice Idea, VERY Poor Execution (w/ Catholic bias).......2006-06-20
This book attempts to cover most if not all the major areas of life in which we must make choices about who we are as individuals, what direction we wish to go. The title of the book suggests that the book's design is to enlighten the reader about the nature of such choices.
Unfortunately, in the my eyes and those of the other introspective members of a class just finished that required this book, the book is a failure in that it attempts to cover so very much material, is insufficiently edited, and generally fails to focus attention on the key life choices suggested by the book's title. Instead, we found the book a rather empty promise of good things to come.
Chapter one begins with some good insight into various ways we learn or relate to the world that may differ from others. That's useful information. Chapter two deals with the major issues children must deal with to mature (at least in western cultures). Chapter two is the highpoint of the book, and its rapidly downhill from there thru another 400pgs and 12 chapters.
A typical chapter will open with 2-4 pages of well conceived, well written text outlining in general terms a life issue such as sexuality or aging. But then the authors will drone on in needless and counter-productive detail without every reaching a point or conclusion, and often going into tantential personal examples that add little -- both clear signs of an absentee editor.
The chapter on sexuality has no -- repeat, no -- mention of birth control, abortion or masturbation, suggesting a Catholic bias to their approach. Does that make sense to you if this is a book about choice?
In fact, my central complaint about this book is that the title could have been a great focal point for the authors. Instead, it seems to have been a marketing afterthought and has little to do with the authors' book.
Our class of 13 had a hand in selecting this book at the beginning of our spring term. While the choice was unanimous, we were equally unanimous in our great disappointment with the book when it was all over.
Good for novice.......2003-07-31
The last Corey book which I have read is Theory and Practice of Conseling and Psychology. I was very impressed by it.
I find that this book is quite different from Theory and Practice of Conseling and Psychology. In simple terms, this book is not very technical, and is very shallow in many respect. Definitely not a book which I would recommend if you are interested in studying Counseling and Psychology, in which case I would recommend you to purchase Theory and Practice of Conseling and Psychology instead.
However if you are a teenager and would like to know more about yourslef, this book may not be a bad choice.
Awesome.......2001-11-07
This is a great book for someone trying to "find" themselves. It helps you reach inside of yourself to find the answers for questions that you have, but you don't want to ask anyone else because you're embarassed. It'll be a great book to read after five years and see how you have changed and grown. I'd suggest keeping a notebook to record your responses to the questions asked in the book and compare the answers after re-reading it a couple years later.

Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself. A must read for anyone training to be a counselor!

Book Description
Ideal for anyone embarking on or considering a career in human services, counseling, psychology, social work, or any of the other helping professions, this book provides an overview of the stages of the helping process, as well as the skills and knowledge required to be a successful helping professional. Drawing on their years of experience, the Coreys focus on the struggles, anxieties, and uncertainties one encounters on the road to becoming an effective helper. The book emphasizes self-reflection on a number of professional issues and challenges the reader to examine their motives for choosing a helping career, and takes a candid look at the demands and strains they'll face in the helping professions.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2001-01-25
This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

Its open source power can be used in schools, government, or by corporations, and is suitable for both desktop and server use. - Covers the latest version of Ubuntu--Ubuntu 6.06LTS
- Covers every standard desktop application from word processing, spreadsheets, Web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging, music, video, and, of course, games, all the way to software development, databases, and other server applications
- Includes real-world troubleshooting advice contributed by Ubuntu users from around the world
- Learn about the extended Ubuntu community, which includes translators; software developers; teachers; people who love to hand out CDs and help friends try free software; artists; people who write documentation, tips, and guides; accountants; and even a lawyer or two.
- Covers both Ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop systems
- Explains Ubuntu Server installation and basic administration, complete with advanced installer features like LVM and RAID
This book comes with a version of Ubuntu that can run right off the DVD, as well as the complete set of supported packages for Ubuntu, including Kubuntu. Try out Ubuntu on the DVD. If you want to keep it, install it directly from your desktop.

The Official Ubuntu Book.......2007-09-30
This is a clear, concise guide for nonprofessionals, non-geeks, for the most user friendly distribution of Linux. Should you be interested in trying linux and you are not a computer professional, take it from a Unix professional that this is the best route for you at this point. Get the book as a guide, but also get the latest distribution dvd, version 7.04, also available from Amazon. Visit the support sites and wiki and you will see how much help is available, and this is growing fast. Best of luck, and I think you will love it.
Great book for Ubuntu users.......2007-09-19
Whether you're a newbie trying to break into linux, or have been using linux for years, as I have, this is a great book for smoothing the path into Ubuntu.
The book is well written by folks on the development team, and is very easy to follow. The history of the Ubuntu project is a pretty good read, as well.
Buy this book with confidence!
Excelent book but not real detailed about the operations of Ubuntu.......2007-09-18
Overall the book has come in handy since I have only been using Ubuntu for about 3 months. Their is to much story information on the history of Ubuntu and the book covers all the builds (server, Ubuntu, etc.). If you are pretty comfortable with Ubuntu and need a technical reference this book is OK but I would recommend looking for another book to meet you needs. Overall the book has good tips throughout and with some time can be marked to the points you need.
Great book about a great product.......2007-08-23
This book is very well written. It gives a lot of the history about Linux and Ubuntu as well as information about the current progress and future plans. Easy to understand the explanations about how to use Ubuntu 7.04. Excellent reference book to have near the computer.
Newbie's Delight.......2007-08-14
I am a newbie to Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular. The official book is just what I needed to begin tweaking my installation. Let the customization begin!

Book Description
Helps readers apply theory to practice through summary charts, open-ended questions and cases, structured exercises, self-inventories, and a variety of activities. The manual also contains a glossary for each of the theories, chapter quizzes for assessing the level of student mastery of basic concepts, and suggestions for working with a single case (Ruth) using each theory.
Customer Reviews:
excellent teaching tool.......2007-09-26
Corey has done an exceptional job of expounding upon the theories he includes in this text. There are biographical notes for the major "players" in the fields of psychotherapy, as well as the breakdown of each therapy into distinct examinations of basic theory, key concepts, techniques, roles of therapist, contributions to psychotherapy, and limitations of the theory in practical applications. This book is designed for student use both in its format and its clear, concise language. By way of definition between the theories, Corey includes a case study of "Stan" which each of the theories address through their own constructs in their various chapters. It is very good to see how each theory would approach "Stan" as a comparative basis.
Great Purchase.......2007-03-14
The item arrived in the exact condition and within the given time frame. Thank you very much.
Enlightening Subject and Theory.......2007-02-11
I am an avid fan of Gerald Corey's counseling work. He shows various comparisons, different situations and very clearly introduces methods to use. I use this for my class and my professor mentioned that they used the same book when she was getting her Bachelors degree.

Performance Appraisal Phrase Book.......2007-10-17
Our corporate office Human Resource Department was so impressed with this book, we purchased one for each of our managers. Excellent book.
Odd, yet incrediubly useful reference.......2007-10-01
When you are lacking inspiration for detailing the successes or failures of your direct reports this handy reference book provides a vast library of useful phrases that can be used on performance appraisals. The phrases are nicely organised into key competencies with 3 levels (exceeds, meets, does not meet) of grading. Each competency also has listed a number of key verbs and nouns.
Although it can be argued that this type of book can devalue the feedback given in performance reviews, it can also help to prevent the reviewer from writer's block and falling back onto a few stock phrases.
The biggest criticism I have is that the book does not contain a concise index to all of the competencies. You have to browse the whole book to discover and find specific competencies.
Above average.......2006-03-04
Compared to some similar books I have read, this book has better phases to use on performance reviews along with key verbs and nouns for each "area" of an employee's review. When choosing a rating for an employee in a specific area it also helped to review the statements described in the book to have a consistent measure to judge performance.
