Book Description

Forget school math class, Flash math is about fun. It's what you do in your spare time - messing around with little ideas until the design takes over and you end up with something beautiful, bizarre, or just downright brilliant. It's a book of iterative experiments, generative design; a book of inspiration, beautiful enough to leave on the coffee table, but addictive enough to keep by your computer and sneak out while no one's looking so you can go back to that Flash movie that you were tinkering with 'til 3 o'clock this morning. In "New Masters of Flash" the designers told us about themselves and deconstructed their finest effects. This time we've gathered the best in one book and simply asked them to go away and do what they do best: play. We give you the code and explain the essence, then you take your inspiration and run with it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-26

Though it's in ActionScript 2.0, this book is very good if you're into creating visualizations via programming (not only ActionScript). It shows the creative and logical process behind the code (I think that's much more important that the code itself). And it's also a beautiful book to add to your collection :-)

And you can also download all the .fla used in the examples.

5 out of 5 stars Math and Flash combine to provide interesting animations.......2006-10-30

This book is stunning visually and is just overflowing with inspiration. This is a book intended to show us what the Flash community has been able to come up in terms of creation and allows us to tinker around with the code. If you like to take a basic principle and see it evolve given enough time and interest, then this is the book for you. If you enjoy seeing "how" things function rather than "why" they work, you have the opportunity to tinker and toy with the variables to see exactly "how" it changes the overall look of the final piece. To get the most from this book the reader is expected to understand the basics of ActionScript as well as the techniques common in most projects. This is not intended to deter the beginner, as you will surely learn much.

The book is laid out pretty straightforward. There are 15 chapters with each one dedicated to a certain individual who goes through each of his creations and iterations.Suggested reading by the people at "Friends of Ed" is to grab the source files, run them, and then read the chapters. Some of the source files are adequately commented so in some, the book isn't even needed. That is not to say, however, that this book is not necessary to understand what's going on. The book gives you quick insight to the authors' mindset and thinking, and each chapter begins with an overview of where they are from, what they do, how they have come to do this, and interests.

There are actually two parts to the book. The second part consists of the last three chapters and has what you'd consider an "application" or an "engine" for viewing the creations and being able to manipulate them directly. The first part of the book is dedicated to finding a variable, which for the most part is explained in the book, changing it to your liking, viewing the results, and reviewing the code. At the end of the book there is a Tangents page which provides 54 links to explore.

In case you are wondering where the math fits in, it's scattered throughout the book. However, sometimes, we are not presented with the reasons for using "128" for variable "p" to multiply by var "b" which has the value of "14". You may often be left scratching your head and asking why, but that isn't the point. Sine and Cosine are presented quite clearly in the first chapter and there is a terrific example from Gabriel Mulzer, but if you are looking to the find the mysteries behind using atan2 to get an angle, then this book will not answer that question. It is up to you to play the part of explorer to find those answers. You are presented with a wealth of methods that people use, inspiration for them, and experiments that the reader is encouraged to break. You are given a chance to use these methods to have fun and use them as springboards to access that creativity that lurks in each and every one of us.

In conclusion, if you enjoy going through code with a fine toothed comb and if you want to pick up valuable techniques for doing certain things with Flash, as well as be dazzled by some of the innovators of our time, get the book. It is the perfect culmination of what Flash ActionScripting can do. I would show the table of contents at this point, but all of the chapters are named after the innovators themselves, and would provide little insight to the contents.

4 out of 5 stars actionscript and Math.......2006-08-21

I appreciate the book and it helps to understand how to create nice animations by using maths.
I think it needs more Classes writing and not only timeline.

4 out of 5 stars People, it's called flash math CREATIVITY.......2005-10-13

The Flash Math books are great. But not if you want an O'Reilly cookbook of answers to your design problems. It's all about inspiration. Being able to look at something and say "wow, that's so beautiful" and either need to make it yourself just on principal, or see that maybe one day you can use the idea yourself on all those practical things you're so worried about. If you get all juiced up creatively from the things you see around you, this is a perfect book. It's 4 instead of 5 because it doesn't come with a CD. But you can go to the website for the book and see things in action.

That probably appealed to the left brain folks.

For the right brain ones among you. No, this will not teach math. No it won't explain much in the math department at all. It does give the code, it allows you to experiment with what Flash will do, it might renew your interest in Flash. Kind of like watching one of the a-lister Flash kids talk at a Flash Forward conference, it might do that more than looking at a Hockney photo collage (both work for me). If you don't work that way, buy it and give it to one of your left brain Flash friends.

It will be great fun for them, they will get to feel like they remember their math and are much better at it now. And it will make pretty things.

5 out of 5 stars Some Assembly Required.......2005-10-07

The book is great. I find the negative reviews puzzling because this book is like a $30 kit for a working spaceship, but you have to weld the wings on yourself. Big deal. What's wanting in so many Flash books are examples of the astonishing things you can do with Flash. This book shows what can be done, then hands you the code on a platter. I guess if you're more the designer type and you want to do great stuff using the math functions in Flash, you, um, er -- need to learn some math. But don't complain that every author hasn't lined up to correct your particular brand of ignorance. Read a book.

Book Description

The Checklist is organized to help guide a person through each phase of the aging process, helping individuals take the right precautions, at the right time in their lives, in order to avoid the most common health ills and pit–falls.

Each chapter is organized by living decade. There is a chapter on what diseases to look for and how to maintain sold health habits during a person's 10–20 (teens) decade, their 20's, 30's, 40's, up through their 70's.

According to Dr. Manny, as a person matures, each decade comes with it certain risks not seen in their previous decade of life. Each decade's health plan must be tailor made to fit a body as it matures, and if one acts preventatively and proactively and in accordance with Dr. Manny's simple maintenance breakdown, one can actually close the door to future life–threatening diseases well into old age.

Plain spoken, and delivered in an easy question/answer format, Dr. Manny brings clarity to confusing health concerns, as well as an understanding of a body's overall health picture/arc as it ages.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The Check List.......2007-05-28

"The Check List" by Manny Alvarez was a terrible
disappointment, and offered little help in family
medical matters or information. When we needed
crucial information on a lymph node question we
found little or nothing. Scanning the book there
appears to be little else that is impressive or
from which someone would obtain detailed and helpful
information or guidance. A total waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars The organization makes it one of the easier health guides on the market.......2007-05-19

THE CHECKLIST: WHAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY NEED TO KNOW TO PREVENT DISEASE AND LIVE A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE comes from a popular TV show health expert, Dr. Manny Alvarez, who here provides an all-in-one preventative health maintenance book arranged to identify the most common diseases and health risks at all stages of life. Each decade introduces new risks or increases risk factors: the decade-by-decade approach allows families and consumers to understand how to active preventatively to thwart the most common ills - and how to recognize their symptoms early. The organization makes it one of the easier health guides on the market: perfect for general-interest libraries.

4 out of 5 stars Do You Know 'The Checklist' For Your Decade?.......2007-04-09

A 37-year old businessman has to leave work early to pass a kidney stone. A 62-year old grandmother keeps turning the television up louder and louder to hear it while her grandkids cover their ears. A sad and despondent teenager thinks she is too fat and begins throwing up to help her lose weight. An expectant mother-to-be has high blood pressure and wonders how that will impact the health of her baby.

If there was a way to prevent these everyday moments in life from happening, would you want to know about it? If somehow you inherently knew what was about to happen to your health in the next 5, 10, even 50 years, then how would that change the way you live your life? What if there was some sort of manual to provide guidance and direction about how to stay ahead of the curve and actually prevent the most common ailments from afflicting you before they happen?

Well, that's exactly what the new book by Dr. Manny Alvarez entitled The Checklist: What You And Your Family Need To Know To Prevent Disease And Live A Long And Healthy Life has set out to do! Whether you are 3 months, 3 years, 33 or even 93, this book tells you exactly what you can expect in terms of your health based on the decade of life you are currently living in.

Most people know "Dr. Manny" from his fantastic work as a health correspondent on the FOX News Channel. Seeing a void in the health market for a book explaining what happens to the typical person at various stages of their life, Dr. Manny decided to write The Checklist so that people won't be caught off guard when calamity hits.

Of course, he is not so presumptuous to think that people can only be stricken with certain diseases and health complications during a given decade. We all know that we are susceptible to just about anything given the circumstances, so this book is merely a guide of what COULD happen in the future or maybe even sooner. That's why it's probably an excellent idea for you to go ahead and skip to the chapters ahead of your current age so you can prepare yourself and even ward off what for many is the inevitable.

I love the breakdown Dr. Manny provides for each of the major life stages:

Prenatal
The "Most Important" Decade (Ages 0-9)
The "Beautiful" Decade (Ages 10-19)
The "Real World" Decade (Ages 20-29)
The "Living Responsibly" Decade (Ages 30-39)
The "Cadillac" Decade (Ages 40-49)
The "Keeping Up With The Joneses" Decade (Ages 50-59)
The "Only Just Begun" Decade (Ages 60-69)
The "Beauty Of Age" Decade (Ages 70+)

As I was reading page by page of The Checklist, I couldn't help but be reminded of the perennial bestselling book for new mothers called What To Expect When You're Expecting. Dr. Manny's book is written in much the same manner, except it's a "What To Expect When You're Living Life" kind of book.

Dr. Manny really packs a loaded punch in chapter after chapter because he wants you and your family to know what's coming around the next corner of life. His philosophy is if you are prepared for the health issues that hit most people, then you can be ready for whatever comes your way and quite possibly head it off at the pass so that it never happens to you. What a noble effort and I appreciate that a book like this was not only imagined, but was actually brought to fruition.

For those whose attention span is about as far from here to there, Dr. Manny provides a convenient "checklist" for each decade (thus, the name of the book!) at the end of each chapter. It's very important to go straight down the list of health markers and have those tests and vital signs conducted at the frequency he recommends so you know where your health stands. If you follow Dr. Manny's advice now, then you'll save a lot of pain (in your body and wallet!) in the years to come.

As someone who has lost nearly 200 pounds and kept it off for three years, I was a bit put off by Dr. Manny's "Freedom Diet" plan that oversimplifies the obesity problem. Here's his plan in a nutshell: eat less and exercise more. Hmmm, it seems we've tried to spread that message for decades, Dr. Manny, but with little to no success. In fact, the number of overweight and obese people has actually INCREASED since the low-fat, low-calorie lie has been perpetrated on the American people.

I'm all for joining you in spreading the word about how to fight obesity, but the widening disconnect between the health message you are promoting and the public embracing it has never been greater. Rather than dismissing low-carb programs like the Atkins and South Beach diets as "low-calorie nutrition plans disguised by clever marketing gimmicks," how about encouraging people to find what works for them and follow through with that customized plan? Doesn't that sound more reasonable than dismissing these plans altogether as "gimmicks?"

The fact is I've eaten around 2500-3000 calories per day on my low-carb lifestyle--a daily total that would cause the eyes of many nutritionists and health "experts" to bug out. But I don't worry about calories as long as I am avoiding such garbage carbohydrates as sugar, white flour, processed foods, fast food, junk food, starchy veggies, and high-sugar fruits. Instead, I eat high-quality and nutritious carb sources--namely non-starchy green leafy vegetables and low-glycemic fruits.

Nevertheless, Dr. Manny weaves an easy-to-read writing style with solid facts and a sprinkling of humor to make The Checklist a worthwhile read. Don't forget to read the special "Living Long" chapter where he provides a comprehensive "master checklist" of every test and vaccination you can think of to let you know why you need it, when you should have it done, what results you can expect from it, and what that will mean to your future health. If for no other reason than to have this invaluable list, then get this book!

I have the highest amount of respect for what Dr. Manny Alvarez does to further the cause of healthy living to the masses. It is a mutual respect, too, as he named my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog among the top ten health web sites on the Internet in 2006. We need more people like Dr. Manny who are willing to share what they know about health in order to give others hope for a long, happy, and healthy life. Get The Checklist and begin taking this journey for yourself!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good easy read.......2006-07-17

i would've given the book 5 stars if it had more pages with illustrations and quiz material.
yep, he seems to be full of himself. doesn't need to be. just get the material across and the book sales will come.
the illustrations were clear as well as the layout of the book too. he can thank his publishers for that.

2 out of 5 stars Unprofessional :(.......2006-07-03

I am a poker player, and I am used to read the very best books about gambling (mostly from twoplustwo publishing). This book striked me as being very unprofessional, compared to what I am used to.

The author brings out fallacious ideas like you have to "think about the card you want and it will make you more likely to get it". This won't help the author's credibility. A good publisher would have never let him publish such non-sense.

Also, the overall tone of the writing does not inspire confidence. I was not looking for a novel, but I like it when the author sounds professional.

I am not in good position to judge the rest of the book. But that's the scary part! I won't be able to tell the good from the bad!

I only recommend that book because I couldn't find many other books about Gin. I advise the reader too be cautious reading this book.

1 out of 5 stars A Big Blowhard.......2005-02-13

This guy may be a good gin player, but he's really full of himself.

His advice is excessively basic.

Also, he admits that he cheats at cards for money.

Finally, reading this book will not make you a good gin player.

2 out of 5 stars A little good material, but price not justified.......2004-12-05

I found this book to be frustrating, mostly because it becomes apparent that while the author enjoys the challenge of pulling one over on a live opponent, this book is really the author doing the same thing to the consumer. I agree with the other reviewer who was put off by the overly large type. I also note the consumer clip art on the cover. I should have known better.

The book is edited and published by the author's friend. I am sure Mr. Killebrew is an interesting person and a pleasure to be around. Why else would so many people enjoy playing him and getting beaten by him? But the impression I get is one of a sleazy braggart of a con-artist. A small publishing house is fine, but usually there is a reason a regular publishing company does not pick up one's manuscript: it just isn't quite good enough. Looking at the other items Swan Pub. and his editor Pete Billac has come out with, they almost all involve the same things about which we get spammed. Having read the Bicycle books on hearts and spades by Joseph Andrews, one sees how a book on a card game should be written.

I was also lured in by the positive reviews. I should have listened to the negatives this time. I should have noted that several of the glowing reviews are written by the author (ckill2015). I also note that the anonymous reviews were written soon after the book's publication, many of which were posted on the same day.

As to the quality, there just isn't much here, certainly not enough to justify a $9.95 price tag. Gin Rummy is not THAT complicated a game to warrant an extensive treatise, but Gin Rummy How to Play and Win, in fewer pages and with a much lower price, covers FAR more information on the game, variations and strategy. This book covers a lot of the author reminiscing about himself and his life and how wonderful a player he is.

To echo the problem with the chapter on "Percentages," it is true the book doesn't deal with it. It is also the second shortest chapter in the book at nearly a page and a half. However, on the back of the book the first item in the list of "Learn How To" features is "Play Percentages." That's just false advertising, also known as lying. My apologies for being too personal here, but since he brings it up in the "about the author" section, I expect better of a Marine.

There are good points to the book: his chapter on cheating is interesting; he does offer good advice on playing a live opponent, and after all the smack-talk similar to the play of bid-whist, he does offer excellent advice on courtesy.

Nor am I one for political correctness, but something about this line just rubs me the wrong way and is indicative of the whole book: "Against the very good players (the ones who play the game as I play it) you have to maintain discipline and never give in to hunches or impulses. I know this is useless information to give to female players because their intuition is so much more acute than mine is..."

At $9.95, this book is far too expensive for what one gets. The practical advice could fit nicely into a well-thought-out brochure. Please leave out the extensive writing on the "card gods" and use of telepathy and telekinesis. I would rather have learned from and lost to the author in person than been cheated by this book.

5 out of 5 stars self improvement.......2002-09-22

It has been over a year since I made some comments about my book.
Since then I have gone from winning at 68% to 73% and continue to be the leading percentage player in World Play Case's Ladder, and no one has broken my 37 game winning streak record. Charley Killebrew

5 out of 5 stars All you need to get started.......2007-07-20

This is an excellent starter book and also has more in-depth information than what is required for simple husbandry (e.g. the section on breeding has what appear to be good suggestions and lots of factlets). Although it may have some inaccuracies, it would seem that this book alone is sufficient to get one started in raising the suggested (beginner) scorpions - not that one shouldn't seek more information, but we just purchased a couple Emperor scorpions and so far, the book has covered everything we appear to need. Photos and diagrams are excellent!

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK for those new to scorpions.......2005-09-07

Despite a few inaccuracies and errors described elsewhere by another reviewer, this book will offer anyone new to keeping scorpions or who is curious about these most remarkable of animals an easy to read offering covering many diverse aspects of scorpions.
For those interested in keeping scorpions in captivity with little or no experience, this book should be considered a must read (along with "The Biology of Scorpions" by Gary A. Polis), as it offers a great deal of general information and care and maintenance information in an easy to read format for layperson and advanced keeper alike.
I'd recommend this book (and have dozens of times) to anyone with even a passing interest in scorpions.

4 out of 5 stars Gem of a Resource for the Beginner -Advanced .......2005-08-19

Wonderful resource for those who are looking for information on these amazing invertebrates. Basic care and important warnings about the collection and maintance of these new additions to the pet world. A resource for the beginner to the advanced .

4 out of 5 stars Read BEFORE you buy.......2004-06-09

Or, before you allow your son to buy. hehehe

I know that should go without saying but not everyone realizes how serious a thing this sort of "pet" is. This book covers how easily scorpions can make their escape and describes how to safely house them. As a mother that is my main concern.

I was pleased at how well the safety issues are covered in this area and we have been using this book to discuss with our son the importance of proper care and housing of a creature like this BEFORE he even buys one.

4 out of 5 stars THE beginner's book.......2003-06-11

A concise look at scorpion biology for the pet keeper. Has a good section on species commonly available (arranged in groups as easy, difficult and dangerous). Has a good overview of habitat requirements, but I wish it had more specifics in keeping the various species...this section is arranged in table form only. It only took me an hour to read it, and I wish it had gone into more detail in general.

Book Description

Manny Ibay, a Los Angeles trial attorney, tells how he applied the Robbins' principles, step by step, to remake his life. Actual excerpts from Mr. Ibay's success journal chronicle his ten-year experience with Robbins' books, tapes and live seminars to move from a $1,000 per month job he hated to designing his dream life and become master of his own destiny. A lifestyle, which enabled him to go on thirty-six vacations in the past five years as well, as operate his own business. Unlike many books on personal development, this is told in storybook form--of how one underachiever was able to follow a well known and widely available success program and use it to his great benefit. This book answers the questions that Tony Robbins fans and skeptics ask after viewing his infomercial. Do the tapes really work? And how can they work for me?

2 out of 5 stars Interesting but a bit flat..........2007-08-28

Manny tells his story about how Tony Robbins helped him change his life.
I was expecting more out of this book and bought it out of curiosity.
There really isn't much meat in it.

5 out of 5 stars I would give this book 6 stars.......2005-09-20

It's the similarity of the author's goals to mine - to do what I want, when I want - that drew me to the book. As also, the essence of Tony Robbins' principles that Manny Ibay has captured so well. Based on the title and subtitle, on an impulse, I ordered the book from Amazon, and it has proven to the best purchase to date I have made.

I am a huge fan of Tony Robbins, but the immense volume of his work makes it difficult to satisfactorily get one's hands around it all, in its entirety. The conciseness of this book, tightly summarizing the distilled wisdom of Tony, makes it a gem. It might sound exaggerated but, truly, I consider this book a jewel in the crown of my library of Tony's books and tapes. The author meticulously records the details of how he applied Tony's advice to his life. He lays bare his own failure/aspirations, provides simple but valuable illustrations from his success journals, outlines the action steps he took, and tracks his progress. His story rings true and convincing. Cynics might say he has not conquered the earth by following his dreams (Becoming a lawyer ...traveling extensively ... acquiring a ritzy convertible, etc) but, in a manner of speaking, he has: what better a world to conquer than the one of your dreams, whatever they may be!

I am particularly appreciative of the moments of doubt/failure that he chose to reveal. It's those instances that made his narrative very real to me, and had me convinced that Tony's success formula does indeed work. That even if it takes a decade, Tony's advice works, if sincerely ACTED UPON. That lofty goals of an Agassi or Mandela are not the only ones worthy of consideration - even breaking out of a dead-end job, yes, is lofty enough for many of us. In fact, it's the very "smallness" of everyday challenges that has most of us, stymied. It's when I can't seem to follow through on even a simple resolve (... like waking up earlier to work on my goals!) that makes me wonder, how the heck do doer's get so much accomplished. The manner in which Manny Ibay, an average Joe, as he calls himself, pulled himself out of his rut has me inspired. It makes me go, yesss, it's possible - and this is how. Thank you, Manny, for sharing your success.

It has been insightful for me to follow the thought processes and actions behind the transformation of a so-called average person - coz' I am average. I have no gut-wrenching handicaps to overcome, or incredibly dazzling heights to reach. I'm yet another dreamer, seeking, amongst other things, a fulfilling, paying, career that will afford me money, flexibility, and leisure - to travel. That's where this book comes in, and scores. It's an excellent model and motivational tool for an "average" person. It's not theoretical pep talk, but a practical, how-to manual -- a step by step, real life example -- on which to base one's own plans for change. I read this book almost every day, to fire me up. I overwrite sections of its workbook/journal with my own "success" entries and/or "failure", which has helped to give form to my own dreams and designs for living. So, how would I rate this book ? 6 stars -- on a scale of Amazon's 1 to 5.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Manny Ibay!!!.......2004-01-21

Great read! If you have read a Tony Robbins book, listened to a tape, or have seen him live, then this book is for you! Manny shows how he started with just a great attitude and a belief system to having everything he has ever wanted. Hard work, dedication, and a persistence to accomplishing what you want is what lies ahead for the reader. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Ibay's work. To think, this book started as a thank you note to Tony Robbins. A job well done.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Tony Robbins.......2003-11-10

Twice I have read this book from cover to cover, its very inspiring. I have been a tony robbins fan for a number of years and this book gives you a detailed account how Manny Ibay used tony's materials to bring a dramatic change in life. This book is must read if you are struggling and want to change for the better.

Book Description

Manny /ma·ne/ n

A male nanny or babysitter, known to be handsome,

fabulous, and a lover of eighties music

"Be interesting."

That's what the manny tells Keats Dalinger the first time he packs Keats's school lunch, but for Keats that's not always the easiest thing to do. Even though he's the only boy at home, it always feels like no one ever remembers him. His sisters are everywhere! Lulu is the smart one, India is the creative one, and Belly . . . well, Belly is the naked one. And the baby. School isn't much better. There, he's the shortest kid in the entire class.

But now the manny is the Dalinger's new babysitter, and things are starting to look up. It seems as though the manny always knows the right thing to do. Not everyone likes the manny as much as Keats does, however. Lulu finds the manny embarrassing, and she's started to make a list of all the crazy things that he does, such as serenading the kids with "La Cucaracha" from the front yard or wearing underwear on his head or meeting the school bus with Belly, dressed as limo drivers. Keats is worried. What if Lulu's "Manny Files" makes his parents fire the manny? Who will teach him how to be interesting then?

I read this book in a day, it was so funny that I couldn't wait to read the next page. I wish I had a Manny growing up, it took me years to remember to be interesting (Read this book and you'll understand what that means). I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to understand the word family. This guy neds to write another book!!!

5 out of 5 stars the funniest, cutest, and the best book ever!!!!!.......2007-04-10

i am 16 and i LOVED this book. Keats was a curious little guy and it was fun to share the experience wtith him wether its the tradegdy of having a family membor dying or dealing with other siblings. He is such a great charector!!!! The nanny is also very delightful. I love that he was gay though i kind of suspected though.Plus keats acted like it was no big deal, that he was gay which is how everyone should act. Trust me i would rate this book like a 1000000 on a scale of 1 to ten. Its not only for kids i would recomend this book to adults also. BUY IT!!!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-28

A very disappointing book. On the book jacket, Christian Burch is compared to David Sedaris. That is unfortunate and not very accurate, for that comparison does a large disservice to Mr. Sedaris. Mr. Burch does not share the wit, the intelligence or the literary muscles that Mr. Sedaris has repeatedly displayed.

What could have been an extremely important and vital book -- about growing up, about self-discovery, about remaining true to one's impulses -- becomes clouded in what appears to be a shallow and self-indulgent intent. The story is written from the perspective of a third-grade boy (Keats) but the voice I heard was that of a 40 year old gay man. As a matter of fact, all the characters had the same sort of voice. There was a flippant and catty sense of humor that all the characters shared. All the social references were pulled from the 70' and 80's -- relevent to a 40 year old man and not that of a third-grade boy.

I wish Mr. Burch had spent more time delving into his characters, making them three-dimensional, showing strength and fraility in all the characters (both gay and straight) and less time describing inane moments like the time the Manny's swimsuit slips a bit and reveals "[...] cleavage." He seemed only revel in the thought of throwing as many homosexual references and "surprises" as he can. I was especially let down at the end when I was rooting for a "self-discovering" moment to occur to our hero Keats (it was the final chapter after all) and instead was let in on the fact that the Manny and Uncle Max are a couple. I am not sure how that revelation impacts Keats but Mr. Burch does not seem to care. As a parent, I was rooting for Keats, hoping that he would perhaps accept and reveal a first homosexual impulse, however small. But Mr. Burch focuses only the Manny and Uncle Max at this point. It was a shame. Keats deserved better treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Boisterous, sweet family fun........2006-09-09

It was refreshing to read a kids' book in which the parents were not fuddy-duddies or oppressive or bland nonentities. Yes, it's the manny who brings a lot of silly fun to the kids' lives, Mary Poppins style, but the parents aren't above enjoying it. The family dynamics bring a warm, loving note to the book, too. A family hasn't been this comforting and engaging to read about since the Anastasia Krupnik books, or before that, Elizabeth Enright's Melendy family.

The innocent voice of the eight-year-old narrator has a few bobbles-- things an eight-year-old really would have known, like the word "finances"-- but for the most part, it's the voice of a real kid who just happens to like clothes valets and penny loafers. According to Keats, the world pretty much revolves around Keats, and the narrative remains at his level. The book is delightfully gay, playing on a particular gay culture like "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," but like that show it is completely devoid of preaching about being gay. It's a celebration of the characters as individuals and of the fun and the challenges of being a kid.

One of the best books I've read this year.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for ALL ages.......2006-08-26

I am a psychotherapist and an avid reader. The author's aunt sent me a copy of The Manny Files to see what I thought about it. My husband and I both read it and loved it. It is such an entertaining and well-written book that we purchused 6 more copies to send to family and friends, children and adults. The author captures and describes the childrens' feelings accurately and with a lighthearted touch. It is very uplifting, so it is also perfect for people who are ill or recovering from surgery. We even have a copy for houseguests to read. So far, EVERYONE has said what a great book it is. No one can believe this was the author's first book. We can't wait for his next book.

When meat eating is declining in Australia, and the scientific consensus is that meat eating is detrimental to health. The CSIRO, which exists in part to support the Australian meat industry, brings out a diet book and surprise surprise it advises a high meat diet - coincidence, I think not.

5 out of 5 stars If you like meat protein this is for you!.......2006-08-16

This is the only diet that has ever worked for me. I love vegetarian food, but would never feel satisfied. I have finally accepted the fact that I need protein, and meat protein to feel full and satisfied. This diet is perfect for me, and I think a lot of people. I followed it for 3 months (not totally strict either) and lost 20lbs.

I am a mother of 2 young children and hated spending all my time thinking about meals, what I was going to cook for the girls, my Partner and myself.

I was thrilled to see 12 weeks of menus set out for me so I didn't have to worry about what to cook again. It takes all the stress out of whether you are eating right and also portion sizes.

I have adjusted a few recipes to suit my budget as I can't afford the expensive cuts of meat or fish. I know food in Australia is a lot cheaper especially the seafood. But with cheaper fish and maybe a steak rather than fillet steak, you can still have wonderful meals.

3 out of 5 stars too complicated.......2006-07-10

It is a very good diet with healthy foods but too complicated to purchase suggested foods and keep up with daily.

4 out of 5 stars My take on "24" from IDW.......2007-02-06

For all you duh-huh people out there just like me, this is a glorified comic book. I wanted to note this first. In the discription I first read it was noted as 3 short stories. Yes, they are short stories. In comic book format! When it arrived I wasn't sure I like it. After reading it carefully, oh say 10-12 times, I decided it was very informative and interesting. The first comic is, "One Shot". It helped to place Jack in the beginning of his career at CTU. The artwork wasn't that impressive to me. The second story is, "Midnight Sun" and here you get to know more about the Jack we all love. I found more personal details as to how he handels himself & what he has had to do to, sacrfice, to successfully stop terrorists. The artwork is definately coming along here. Characters are more defined and accurately drawn. The last of the three is entitled, "Stories". This is the BEST of the three! It takes you inside & expalins the Ramone Salazar story line. The artist Manny Clark should get some award for his renderings of Jack, Tony, Chloe, Michelle, & everyone else! It's just like watching the show frame by frame. I learned alot from this one & it helped plug up all the little holes in the Salazar story line for me. Over all I totally enjoyed this book, even though I was a bit leary of the format.

5 out of 5 stars At least for a fan, these Comics help with the wait!.......2006-04-03

Now that Day V of 24 is in Action, getting these many "Inbetweenquels" (Sequels & Prequels and everything in between) may not be so crucial. But once the show ends this season, it may be the time to check out these comics out!

In 24: One Shot, It's Jack's first day at CTU, where he meets Tony, Nina, Jamey . . . the main gang of Day I. Oh yeah, he must also save a witness' life with one bullet left in the gun.

In 24: Stories, It's between Days II & III, and Jack is currently undercover with the Salazar Cartel. Think that's hard enough to begin with? Check out what Jack has to do keep his cover and save the hostages of a 24-storied hotel when it's taken over by Chechen Rebels!!

Finally, in 24: Midnight Sun, The Story is between Days II & III, and even more so, between 24: The Game (PS2) & 24 Stories. Jack has to battle some eco-terrorists from messing with the Oil-Preserves near Fairbanks, Alaska. It's mid-summer on this day . . . which means there's 24 hours of constant sun!

Overall, each pull their own weight, and I recommend each of them, though I must say 24: Stories was the best of the three. I should also remind you that I bought all three separately, and this is the three in a set. Get them all in one swoop, I guess . . .

For a fan, these are worthwhile reads, definitely breaking up that unbearable SEVEN Month Hiatus 24 usually takes between June to December. For a non-fan . . . I wouldn't know for sure: My advise would be to watch the series and THEN see if you're a big enough fan to read these pretty impressive "Inbetweenquels!"

There's something awfully comforting about a cookbook that starts with a chapter on what to drink (which beers with which kinds of food) followed by eight cocktail recipes, five of them a variation on the margarita theme. Hibiscus Margaritas and Mango-Key Lime Margaritas should tip off the unsuspecting that they have just entered uncharted territory.

The drink chapter is followed by the salsa chapter (Papaya-Habanero Salsa, anyone?) is followed by breakfast--Truffled Egg Tacos? Bacon-Gruyere Migas? "What a cathartic joy it is," writes Robb Walsh, former food editor of the Austin Chronicle and one of the few American food writers with functioning taste buds, "to make a happy face with two sunny-side up eggs for eyes and bacon strips for a mouth, and to douse that cheerful bastard with a torrent of fiery red sauce." With sentiments like that, the reader is assured that only good food can follow.

And follow it does: Steak, Endive, and Blue Cheese Tacos; Shark-BLT Tacos; Serrano Ham Quesadillas; Pork and Raisin Pasillas; Wild Mushroom Mole Enchiladas; Duck Breast in Green Mole; Chipotle Swordfish Fajitas; and on into desserts.

The authors would like us to believe that this is a whole new departure on Tex-Mex food. And it certainly is that, a departure. But what they call Nuevo Tex-Mex is really just the same contrived "fusion" that happens when overamped chefs shove cuisines and ingredients of the world up against each other. There isn't anything in this book that couldn't be put on a pizza, say, and if baked in a wood-fired oven, be called startling and revolutionary in some circles. Many of the results of David Garrido's fun-in-the-kitchen escapade are indeed tasty, but benchmark of a new cuisine? Hardly that. This could only happen in America, where the culinary compass is currently in the control of a gentle-voiced Chihuahua with a taste for Taco Bell. --Schuyler Ingle

Book Description

Nuevo Tex-Mex cooking, the hottest new trend in Nuevo Latino cuisine, embraces and celebrates both its zesty Latin American flavors and no-nonsense Texas personality. This is hearty food for real people, people who are not afraid to drink a beer (or a shot of tequila) with a meal (even if it's breakfast) and get their hands a little messy. It's food that knows how to have fun without rolling in heavy ingredients. In Nuevo Tex-Mex, Texan chef David Garrido's hip and innovative recipes are presented by Texan food writer Robb Walsh with lots of humor and attitude, all photographed in vivid color and spectacular style by Texan photographer Manny Rodriguez. Even the book's designer is from Texas! This is absolutely the best thing to come along since ice cold beer, tortilla chips, and guacamole.

Today there are many cookbooks on Mexican cuisine. There are many on the style blending the Mexican foods with that of nearby Texas commonly known as Tex-Mex. With all of the people eating nachos, tacos and enchiladas, and all the recipes for salsas, moles and tortillas fillings there was bound to be a time that people needed a change. That change has come and has been put together by David Garrido, a chef at Jeffery's in Austin, Texas; and Robb Walsh winner of a James Beard journalism award in their new cookbook Nuevo Tex-Mex - festive new recipes from just north of the border. The cookbook contains many beautiful photographs from Manny Rodriguez food photographer originally from Havana. Together, they have all created a nice compilation of new foods that include: Mango-Key Lime Margaritas; Papaya-Habanero Salsa; Mushroom Salsa; Spinach & Mushroom Chilaquiles; Steak, Endive and Blue Cheese Tacos; Shark-BLT Tacos; Crab & Spinach Nachos; Habanero Mayo; Jalapeno Corn slaw; Wild Mushroom Mole Enchiladas; Duck Enfrijoladas Blancos; Pork Chops in Apple Butter Mole; Chipotle Swordfish Fajitas; Coca Cola Habanero Potatoes; and Pumpkin Flan. Many of the recipes are very simple to make, but there are may ingredients that are not readily available at the local market, and would need to be found at a specialty food store. There are a few additions to the recipes allowing the reader to try alternatives, and a list of terminology in the back of the book referred to by many recipes. Nuevo Tex-Mex, published by Chronicle Books, has a lot for the adventurous eater, but the standard basic food person or Tex-Mex eater would not want this one. It is truly for the serious eater.
