Trainer to the stars Ray Kybartas is one of those guys who has gone through the entire spectrum of the modern fitness movement: he was an overweight slug who became so motivated (by watching the movie The Jericho Mile) that he jumped into fitness with all his heart and soul. Fitness became, as he notes in the book's title and in many other places, his religion. Madonna, his most famous client, calls their workouts "church." In this book he lays out his ecclesiastical exercise philosophy, with lots of practical advice on how to eat and train, and one big motivational message: fitness, like spiritual enlightenment, is a lifelong pursuit, not a temporary fix. It's an appealing message--simple but surprisingly eloquent.
Book Description
"There are no rules. All you need is dedication."
These words from Madonna's introduction to Ray Kybartas's Fitness Is Religion effectively sum up the philosophy behind this renowned trainer's approach to exercise and health. In this refreshingly different book, we learn that fitness is a life's journey, a deep and soul satisfying process. No amount of discipline, self-denial or good technique can make us healthy. True fitness is the result of a joyful devotion to living a healthy lifestyle, one in which there are no rules, only guidelinesguidelines we fashion for ourselves. What we need most, as Madonna says, is dedication.
Many people feel a deep-seated discomfort with their bodies. More and more of us work in offices where physical exertion is minimal; as a result, muscles atrophy from disuse and, as Ray Kybartas points out, this disuse is reflected in our physiques, imprinted in our posture, gait, and carriage. Simply put, we live in our minds so much of the time that we often forget the maintenance of our bodies, and this neglect is unquestionably life threatening.
For Kybartas, fitness is a spiritual journey, the goal of which is healthnot beauty or vanity. As he states at the outset of the book: "Fitness is a lifelong pilgrimage. And like religious pilgrims, all who seek health must commit themselves to the journey: Those who do will find lasting results." Beauty is superficial and fleeting, he believes, but health is profound and lasting. Genuine beauty, according to Kybartas, is the result of a larger lifelong commitment. Those of us who undertake the journey will find enduring results. To achieve true beauty, we must look beyond it, and transform ourselves from the inside out.
And Kybartas believes that this beauty is something that everyone can possess, because it is the result of a whole and integrated personbody, mind, and spirit combined in one. Fitness, and the physical beauty that can result from it, is something you live. It is his belief that if we care for our bodies, we will also nurture our minds and spirits.
Found in Fitness Is Religion are the techniques and methods Ray Kybartas has developed over time and has used with his clients, many of whom share with Madonna the desire to maintain peak fitness while following a work schedule that frequently doesn't allow for a fixed routine of exercise.
Beginning with diet ("food is a drug; use it wisely") and the importance of finding just the right balance for each individual, and continuing with the importance of both aerobic and strength training ("no mode of exercise is best, except the one you want to do"), the book takes the reader step by step through the process of considering and evaluating the many alternatives that can lead to improved health and fitness.
With a wide range of practical howto material, a helping of scientific theory, and examples of how his clients have adapted sound exercise and dietary principles into their lives, Kybartas provides the basic material from which anyone can fashion a personal fitness program. In this spiritual yet practical guide you will find the path to a healthy wholeness. The key to success is to remember that, as the title states, fitness is a religion, and to achieve it you've got to keep the faith.

Beautiful Presentation with Inspiring Contect.......2006-09-22
I have owned this book since it came out. In addition to my interest in fitness, I am a big Madonna fan and was therefore quite curious about Kybartas's approach. This book is a feast for the eyes; the way the photos, text and quotes are laid out is fabulous. And yet, it isn't one of those beautiful books that is all looks, no substance. I have read it cover to cover dozens of times and still pick it up from time to time to renew my inspiration. His approach is right on - the pursuit of health, not beauty, is what it takes. His advice is timeless.
Fluff and Stuff.......2004-06-21
Madonna's personal fitness guru expounds on better living through fitness. This slick tome' done up in an oh-so-trendy veneer with it's multitude of b&w photos and spirituality talk is mostly all show. However, there is some basic info here for beginners that don't know where to start and even question whether they want to start.
Nutritional goals, info on calculating BMI and Heart rate with comparison charts, sample endurance and weight resistance programs are here amongst the fluff and stuff. Oh, and you also get an introduction by Madonna, what more could you ask for?
it's an O.K. book...Don't expect too much from it........2002-10-03
This book was not what I expected it to be. It's a decent book in itself to read, but not to really 'use'. I did like the fact it recommended a zone type diet (i.e. eating fewer carbs than the average diet which is something i already do)..
This book basically introduces and teaches the various types of exercises e.g. jogging, yoga, strength training and has some up-lifting inspirational sections - but that's it.
Also, the fact that Madonna wrote the introduction, and that Kybartas personally trains her and other celebs did not impress me, if that was their goal. It did seem like a very 'Hollywood', 'Beverly Hills' type book which turned me off.
The bargain price I got it at is what it's worth.
GREAT BOOK TO MOTIVATE YOU TO BE HEALTHY.......2002-04-04
This book makes you want to be in shape and stay in shape. The author has the most balanced approach to fitness, I have ever seen. His advice is based on sound principles. The writing style is enjoyable to read. It is easy to see why he is one of the most sought after trainers today.
The HOLY BOOK on fitness!.......2000-12-21
Ray's book is simply marvelous.I became a convert by the time I was through the first two chapters! I had never dreamt that fitness could be presented in such an appealing way.I was sedentary and 115 Kg when I started reading this epistle always dreaming that one day I might come across some fad diet which will deal with my problem. The moment of conversion came when I read that I had to make that Leap of Faith,Believe in fitness to bring me health and weight loss ,then my ears popped open and I heard that inner voice saying "You ought to be a disciple" I'm so greatful to you Ray and you have no Idea what I'll give to meet you in person or get in touch with you by email, God Bless you for blessing us (middle age sedentary unbelievers) with this epistle

Encouraging.......2007-02-20
This book caught my eye as I was searching for something else. I want to get copies for many friends. It is very insightful as we search to grow in our walk with Christ.
Lizanne O"Toole.......2006-02-25
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who has questioned his or her faith. For the first time I realized what prayer really is and how I could make prayer work in my life. After the death of my 2 year old daughter from brain cancer I wondered why God did not answer the many prayers that were sent his way by so many. I did not want to be one of the many who turn away from God/religion when prayers go unanswered so I sought answers. Jerry Sitter's book is for anyone who has had a prayer not answered. After reading his book I was left with the knowledge of knowing more about myself and still willing to pray! Thank you Mr. Sittser!
Comforting Words in Times of Trouble.......2004-09-28
This book isn't filled with quick and easy answers to why God doesn't answer our prayers. But rather the author tries to encourage the reader down a path that he himself has traveled before and still walks. Jerry Sittser uses both Scripture and his personal experience to reflect upon the difficult times in life when God seems distant and when prayers go unanswered. This book was very encouraging for me for I am currently going through a difficult time in life. Did it solve all my problems? No...rather it was an encouraging testimony to what it is to learn from life and moments like these.
Best Book on This Subject.......2004-05-25
When books move you it's time to tell others. Anyone who has ever seen a loss or has suffered pain can find some comfort in this book. It is written by a man who has been there and hung on to God through it. The book is powerful because it is filled with truth and does not give excuses. Jerry Sittser talks about real pain and the results in his life. He has something profound to say about it and in that did something for my soul.
Book Description
This book demonstrates that, despite much evidence to the contrary, there are still Christian colleges and universities of high academic quality that have also kept their religious heritages publicly relevant. Respected scholar Robert Benne explores how six schools from six different religious traditions (Calvin College, Wheaton College, St. Olaf College, Valparaiso University, Baylor University, and the University of Notre Dame) have maintained "quality with soul." These constructive case studies examine the vision, ethos, and personnel policies of each school, showing how-and why-its religious foundation remains strong.
Customer Reviews:
A good work on an important subject..........2006-06-16
Benne takes six universities (Calvin, Wheaton, Baylor, Notre Dame, St. Olaf, and Valparaiso), and examines the paths these schools have taken in trying to establish the highest educational quality while maintaining their Christian soul.
What makes this book interesting is to see the different approaches that the schools have taken to tackle certain difficulties (i.e. should we require a certain percentage of students/faculty to come from our denominational/theological background, what kind of relationship should we have with our sponsoring religious tradition, how should we encourage our students to participate in the religious life of the university, etc.). I went to Baylor myself, and it was cool to see how my school differed from other prominent Christian institutions in shaping school policy.
The only criticism I have of Quality with Soul is that it is at some points dull, and at times difficult to get through. But perhaps that is because: 1) I am not a scholar; and 2) Benne doesn't deviate from what he sets out to do.

Andy Stanley Senior Pastor, campuses of North Point Ministries
Story Behind the Book
“Beginning my freshman year in college, God began drawing my heart to His. That spring, I trusted Christ as Lord and Savior and latched on to His journey. As an avid reader and eager Christian, I anxiously sought any material on faith-related topics. More specifically, I was craving material from people in my stage of life. It became quickly apparent, however, that collegiate voices had been overlooked, or at least left untold. This seemed a dangerous void. So with God’s provision, I setout to write a book that would tell the stories of common struggles Christians face in college everywhere. Thus began the vision of Can You Keep Your Faith in College. ” — Abbie Smith
Customer Reviews:
Helpful for Christian students who are in any college.......2007-04-18
If you know a young person in college who is a believer, they need this book. While every story is not perfect, they are generally very inspiring and helpful. Most college kids wonder if they are the only ones dealing with the issues they face, and this book makes it very clear that they are not alone. The benefits cannot be denied, because hearing from their peers about these issues makes a greater difference than it ever would coming from anyone else. Put it on your gift list this year.
Great Resource for both Students and their Parents.......2007-01-03
My church recently started a campus ministry where I lead worship. It's been a few years since I graduated from college, but I can still recall the difficulties. Recently, I have come across some amazing testimonies of how difficult the transition from home to college is in today's world. Can you Keep Your Faith in College? addresses these difficulties in a very real and practical way. I say "very real" because it is written not by pastors or parents, but by actual students that are living the adventure of the college journey at the present, which gives this book credibility, in my opinion.
Addressing normal college situations like dorms, class, dating, sororities/frats, parties, church and outside college activities these young believers share their ups and downs, problems and solutions, giving great advice on how to protect and renew their faith in Christ. I meet a lot of young believers, and especially of late, brand new college converts in the minsitry I serve, and I am glad to have this resource to share with them as a means of encouragement and discipleship.
I would recommend this book to parents, students, and churches that have campus ministries or just lots of young men and women.
A book to help overcome obstacles!.......2006-04-30
The research indicates that anywhere from 75 to 90% of high school seniors who identify themselves as Christians will abandon their faith by the time they graduate from college. These are frightening statistics.
Abbie Smith's Can You Keep Your Faith in College? introduces readers to students who are Christians at different stages of their journey with God. They tell their stories about that journey, the good and the bad. These students do not have all the answers but they do believe that God is living on the campuses of America.
The students' stories cover subjects such as: the Classroom, The Dorm, The Pressures, The Greeks, Dating, Transition, Sports, Going Abroad, Barriers and Small Moments.
No matter where you are in your life and journey with God, every student should be able to find several stories that inspire and resonate with them.
I enjoyed "The Harder Way" (Duke University) by James M. It made me think about life and choices in general. One of my favorite stories is "Jesus and Plate Tectonics" (Washington University) by Steven R. We all need the courage of our convictions. The story that hit me square between the eyes was "Embarrassed by Jesus" (University of Colorado) by Dana W. Read it and think about similar experiences in your life. I'm sure everyone has had one.
Armchair Interviews says: Can You Keep Your Faith in College? is a book that reminds us all that we can overcome the obstacles that we or others place in our path as we make our faith journey on the campuses of America.

Encouraging and Uplifting.......2006-11-15
I recently finished reading this book, and I already see benefits in my life. When situations and circumstances rage with confusion and details, learning to look for and remember that ONE THING has already changed my life. We often complicate life to a point we don't understand it any more. This book helps focus in on those simple things, and that ONE THING that God is often speaking to us about.
This book is full of life examples from the authors. What a generous gift the authors have given us--a picture into their hearts and lives.

This is toilet paper.......2004-10-12
I found myself laughing at what amounts to a surgical resident with a godzilla ego. I can't believe that someone who is entrusted with protecting and saving lives can make such fun of the very people he is charged with helping. If I were one of these patients and read this scrambled mess, I would hire an attorney for slander and malpractice. I only hope that he never passed his boards and if he did, practices in a state far from mine....you're the type of ass that gives doctors a bad name.
Some clarification continues.......2003-04-30
I thought the writting was accurate, but, could have used some better editing. As a close to finishing Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow myself, I enjoyed the premise, theme, and characterizations. But, as others have stated, UAB is not among the best General Surgery Residencies, and Emory is not among the best or busiest Cardiothoracic Surgery Residencies. Perhaps each is among the most "malignant."
This is not a good book for those considering a career in medicine...This IS a good book for those considering a career in surgery. CT surgeons are a very minute population, and it wouldn't be wise to take Murrah's experiences as generalities when a far greater majority of medical society has a different mindset, and different training philosophy.
this ain't good writing.......2002-04-11
If you work went to school or work at Bayview General (as I do) then it is a definite buy and read. His description of the characters is amusing. After you read it you will certainly have a new perception of arrogance at its highest level. There are a lot of people in a lot of specialties who work hard and try to put the patient first. Tell us once and get on with the story. If you are not familiar with Bayview I don't think you would enjoy it nearly as much, and remember, this is one person's (very biased) view.
There is no need to read this book.......2002-03-01
This book has multiple problems. First and foremost, the writing is poor. Second, Murrah beats the reader over the head with his premise that this story is more "true" and "real" than other books on the same topic, because he supposedly wrote it as he went along in training. Unfortunately, those episodes are presented in brief passages he drew from his notes. The majority of the book is retrospective commentary on what he was thinking at the time- something for which he criticizes other authors. Further, his arrogance grows tiresome early- just because you're a liberal doesn't make you better than everyone else, Murrah. Also, UAB is not a good surgery program, Emory is not the best CV program around, and your wife is not "hot" as you mention several times. I get the feeling throughout that Murrah has to keep telling himself these things to justify his choices in life. In the end, Murrah is just another one of the 140 + residents who complete cardiothoracic training in this country each year. There is nothing of value in the pages he has put forth here.
The book's ok, but "Bayview" ain't that great..........2001-05-07
If this were to be a truly honest account - as it claims to be - then it should have commented on the atrociously poor reputation that "Bayview's" surgery residency has across the nation. As a former surgery resident, I can comment with confidence on this point. To say that "Bayview" has one of the best surgery programs in the country is absolute fantasy! Teaching is poor and resident morale is abysmal. Murrah's success is probably mostly due to his personal strengths in spite of "Bayview" rather than because of it. True, "Bayview" surgery has a rich heritage, but its luster has faded in recent years. Other than these falsehoods, I found the book largely enjoyable.

Keep Believing.......2000-03-03
Keep Believing is a book that helps a person to keep believing even when things get rough in life. This book also explains how all things work together for good. (Romans 8:28) This book also explains how prayers that seem unanswered are really answered. I have learned to keep focusing on God because He is always there in all my troubles. I would recommend this book to all my friends and family. This book has helped me tremendously in dealing with the death of my 2 1/2 month old son.
A book everyone should read!.......1999-11-09
Ray Pritchard answers all the "why me?"questions beautifully in this book. I wish this book would have been available to me and my family 12 years ago when my sister Laura was killed in a car accident. Now I understand much more the glorious ways of our Lord. I am about to order 2 more books for friends of mine, who are now in their darkest time in life and are on the brink of losing faith. Of course I refuse to part with my copy!
I found this book very inspirational and helpful........1997-01-30
Ray Pritchard's new book has encouraged me during some difficult moments in my life. Keep Believing has pointed me back to God as the only solid foundation.

Book Description
A shocking trail of abuse and deceit by the clergy has caused a crisis of faith among Roman Catholics today. The root of the problem, say the authors, lies in the Church's corrupting power structure, which too often has chosen to protect its own authority rather than follow the example of Christ. James E. Muller, M.D., and Charles Kenney tell the remarkable story of Voice of the Faithful, an organization that has grown to 30,000 members in only 2 years, whose inspired mission is to empower the Catholic laity. This is the gripping story of a movement that started in a church basement and spread throughout the country; of devoted mainstream Catholics rising up to insist upon having a legitimate voice in the affairs of the Church and working to change policies that have driven so many away. 'I envision a Church,' says Dr. Muller, 'where millions who have left are returned; a Catholic Church that can provide its many spiritual benefits for future generations.'
Customer Reviews:
Why can't they just stay in their pews?.......2007-07-17
VOTF has the "radical" idea that the Church will benefit if the laity has a place at the institutional table.
How dare they?
We former "pray, pay, and obey" Catholics now realize our silence gave consent to the abuses, sexual and otherwise.
The Documents of Vatican II is now nightly reading.... wow, talk about "radical".
Blessed John XXIII, Pray for us
Excellent.......2005-02-23
Amazing that so many conservative catholics pick from the old testament whatever supports their agenda, and then ignore whatever doesn't. This book is excellent and should be a major resource to anyone wanting to see the church of the future. Fellow catholics, the progressives have already won, but let's not let down the guard. There is still a lot of work to do! Read this book, inform yourself, and let's change what needs to be changed, and let's walk with our amigo, Jesus.
At best a misleading title, more likely a knowing lie.......2004-07-08
This book is by the founders of an organization known as Voice Of The Faithful. Ostensibly, this was an organization founded to stand with the victims of sex abuse. As a member of the laity I can support this goal wholeheartedly, and without reservation.
However, I work with, and attend graduate school with, members of VOTF and I can tell you that this organization has nothing to do with its stated goal. In practice, VOTF members are out to excommunicate people like me (and ALL orthodox Catholics if they can) from the Body of Christ. Do you believe birth control is immoral? If you do then you stand on the rock of biblical teaching and 2000 years of revealed truth. If you do, then VOTF wants you silenced. Do you believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. If you do you stand on the rock of biblical teaching and 2000 years of revealed truth. If you do, the VOTF wants you silenced. Do you believe that we must confess our mortal sins in the sacrament of penance before receiving our lord in the Holy Eucharist? Do you believe that the Catholic church is one holy and apostolic? If so, the members of the VOTF will slander you, throw rocks at you, and call you vicious names. They will NOT treat you with dignity or listen respectfully. They will pursue their anti-Catholic agenda with reckless disregard for the consequences.
These people are not out to "keep the faith," thus the title of this book is little more than a lie. They are out to persecute orthodox Catholics, and deny us our voice, and our church, by any means necessary. This book is simply a cover-up for their agenda.
Long Overdue Critique.......2004-06-26
For too long a time have the faithful been silent, bowing to the ever-present dictum "pray, pay and obey". A revolution has begun and it is being conducted by all segments of the Church - laity, clerical and hierarchy. Dr Jim Muller, president of the Voice of the Faithful (of which my wife and I are members), is leading this revolution.
I have just finished reading, for the second time, "Keep the Faith, Change the Church" and warmly recommend it to all who would follow Jesus - who said "Suffer the little children to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
Beware of VOTF.......2004-04-16
VOTF is an organization based on deception. They do not represent "the faithful" but only those Catholics with a left wing agenda and that have been around for years (Call to Action, etc)reconsituted under a new and more appealing title for those who are not aware. The membership numbers that they claim is only a list of email addresses that they collect from thier web-site and not true members. They are using the abuse crisis as rocket fuel to forward an agenda that is mostly against Catholic teaching and tradition. I suggest that you go to the VOTF website and see what Muller's "vision" of the church really is verses what he claims it is in public and your eyes will be opened wide. I am sure the content of this vision is not included in the book because he doesn't want the public to know this right away.
