Book Description
Approaching eighty, Rove MacNee sets out to write the story of his youth– “I will be forgiven, I’m sure, if I don’t remember things with stunning clarity.” What memories clearly remain resonate within him like rolling thunder and shower down like rain in Sonny Brewer’s superb and richly rewarding new novel of fathers and sons, family and betrayal.
Set in the small gulf town of Fairhope, Alabama, this lyrical coming-of-age tale begins in the winter of 1941. Named for his father’s drowned Labrador retriever, Rove is a strong-shouldered and self-reliant sixteen-year-old, an uneven match for his volatile father, Captain Dominus MacNee. Though he sometimes wishes the whiskey-soaked man would be lost at sea, Rove himself is in danger of sinking in the troubled waters of his home life.
Navigating between memoir and memory, past and present, Rove reflects upon the people and pursuits that have influenced his life: his passion for fishing, where the toss of the net is more thrilling than the catch in the bucket; his much-loved grandmother, who gives him a copy of Huckleberry Finn, saying, “Boys sometimes run away, you know”; and Anna Pearl Anderson, “the prettiest girl on the Eastern shore,” who ignites in Rove the first flickers of romance. Yet his greatest treasure, perhaps, is his twenty-five-foot sloop, the Sea Bird. Given to him as a gift, the Sea Bird brings with it both the possibility of salvation and the threat of disaster. As Rove dreams of escaping his tumultuous surroundings, it becomes apparent that he can never truly shake the hold of his seaside home unless he confronts, head on, a startling truth.
Returning to the setting of his much-lauded debut novel, The Poet of Tolstoy Park, Sonny Brewer, once again, gives a skillful performance in the Southern storytelling tradition. A Sound Like Thunder is a magnificently crafted tale of a man revisiting the crossroads of his life, connecting the fragmented keepsakes in his heart and mind, and reemerging with a clear understanding of his defining moment.

Needs Work.......2006-11-05
I am enjoying this novel, Brewer's best book to date, but it needs more copy editing.
Well written & Magical.......2006-10-27
A story of youth in small town Alabama coming of age in the 1940's. Well written and magical.
Great book.......2006-09-28
I grew up in Chatom, Alabama, a small town about 60 miles north of Fairhope. I can personally testify that Fairhope, where the story is told, is a dreamlike place, it is wonderful. The book takes me back about 20 to 25 years when I was young and full of spunk like Rove. For any son who grew up with his dad this book also rings true.
I highly recommend this to any lower Alabamian.
p.s. Next time I go home I hope to get my book autographed. I am living in Houston.
A "Jubilee" of Great Writing and Storytelling.......2006-08-21
From the first sentence to the last, I loved this novel. The protaganist, Rove MacNee reflects on a pivotal time in his life: his first kiss, his complicated relationship with his mother and father, the loss of his beloved grandmother, and the moment he passes from boyhood to manhood.
Brewer's writing is like a "jubilee" of words, much like the jubilee of "crabs, flounder, shrimp, and eel" that bless the people of Fairhope, Alabama. Sonny Brewer blesses his readers with beautiful writing and casts an unforgettable story.
Buy A Sound like Thunder for yourself, share it with your friends, pass it on to your children, and will it to your grandchildren. It's that good.
fine historical .......2006-08-02
In November 1941 in Fairhope, Alabama, sixteen year old Rove McNee fears the return of his father, a drunken schooner captain who turns mean with the alcohol. He knows his dad will need no excuse to drink, but the teen believes his mom is cheating on his dad. The only recent respite for Rove and his younger brother Julian have been their Granny Wooten, but she just died.
On the day of his beloved grandma's funeral, Rove is shocked when he observes his drunken father Dominus threaten their German neighbor, Josef Unruh, which leads to the captain's imprisonment for attempted murder. Rove wonders if Josef is the man his mom is stepping out with and if his dad knows that so therefore threatened him with a knife. Instead Josef gives to Rove, a boat needing repair, which the lad begins to do even as he moves onto the vessel as he at peace only at sea and with class mate Anna Pearl Anderson.
The characters keep this fine historical from becoming too nostalgic at a time of the beginning of the end of the innocence with Pearl Harbor and social issues like alcohol and abuse just coming to the surface. Though Rove is the center protagonist, it is Dominus' misbehavior at Granny Wooten's wake that sets in motion the events that impact everyone and break up a family. Though the social issues are not explored that deeply especially in comparison to the author's THE POET OF TOLSTOY PARK and in light of society not wanting to know, fans of mid twentieth century tales will enjoy Sonny Brewer casting fishing nets on the era.

SPITFIRE.......2003-11-12
I am doing a review on a book called Spitfire. It is written by Don Patterson. There are a series of these book's. The story takes place in Britan. A boy named Harry Winslow lives near an Raf base. Which is a type of airbase. The leader of the base orders a couple planes called Spitfires. Later a group of German planes attack the base, so they get the spitfires to fight them and they win. My opinion of this book is that if you like books about war you will like this. It is good because you never know what will happen or what the pilots will do next. I am 10 years old and I am in fifth grade. I have read and liked the whole series.
Great book.......2001-03-03
My 9 year old son, who is into war history writes this: I really liked the book because my favorite war history books are about WWII. The RAF gets 3 brand new spitfires and they have to scrammble into them, because German bombers are attacking. The characters were good, my favorite was Capt. Simms. There wasn't much fighting action, but it was still a good book.
Spitfire! - Action adventure filled with surprises.......2000-03-27
This was a wonderfully written adventure with many great illustrations. Filled with action, adventure, surprises and a new lesson for 12 year old Harry Winslow...our everyday hero!

Product Description
A historical non-fiction account of the 117th Pennsylvania volunteer regiment in the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865. This is the regimental history of the unit much better known as the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry.
Customer Reviews:
One Good Regiment - One good book.......2002-07-08
Hand has written an excellent regimental history. Too often such books either lean too much toward personal histories or too much toward day-to-day operations of the regiment. In this work, the author has struck a proper balance. He relies extensively on The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, as well he should. The OR provide the best documentation of actions of most Civil War units. Hand has supplemented the OR, though, with extensive research and use of letters, contemporary newspapers, diaries, and other books.
The book may not be perfect for the casual reader looking for a good evening's read, but for the student of the Civil War, it provides a close look at action at the regimental level and below. It is a real contribution to the careful study of the many battles in which the 13th Pennsylvania participated. These included operations in the Shenandoah Valley, with the Army of the Potomac, and, late in the war, with Sherman's army. The book is a valuable addition to Civil War literature
A Great Tribute to a Great Regiment.......2001-05-03
Harold Hand's book is well written and researched. It puts the reader right in the center of the action of a hard fighting regiment of the Civil War. I have read it over and over and find something new each time. This book is a dream come true for me as I am the Great Grandson of PVT Ellis Etters of CO G 13th PA CAV. I have done some research on the Regiment myself and know that Mr. Hand put his heart into this book. This book is a must for any serious Civil War buff.
Hard Riding, Easy Reading.......2001-03-24
While "One Good Regiment" is obviously a painstakingly-researched history of the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry that would complement any Civil War collection, Sonny Hand's meticulous attention to detail never gets in the way of a fast-paced read. Hand's forte is his ability to transform what had to have been thousands of hours of research into a riveting story that takes the reader on a virtual tour of the camps, battlefields, hospitals and prisons of the Civil War. By cleverly weaving together military records with personal accounts from diaries and letters, Hand recreates the lives of the ordinary men who performed extraordinary deeds as troopers of the 13th. Hand's book brings to life the 13th, its first recruits rising from Philadelphia's teeming Irish ghettoes to fight for the reunification of their adopted homeland, then follows the evolution of these "Irish Dragoons" into a battle-tested force eventually trusted by the cavalry commander of the Army of the Potomac as the answer to Grant's request for "one good regiment." With dozens of photos and a complete regimental muster list, Hand's book is a goldmine for both history and genealogy buffs.
One Great Book!!.......2001-03-16
Harold Hand, in his first major work, has written a superbly detailed account of one of the most important, yet previously overlooked, cavalry regiments of the Civil War. When Grant requested "one good regiment" for the final push through the Confederacy, the 13th Pennsylvania was chosen. This book is a detailed account of the 13th from the origins of its formation, to the mustering out of the regiment with Sherman in the Carolinas. The 13th was engaged in many notable conflicts during the war including Second Winchester where the regiment suffered its greatest number of casualties. The regiment was under the command of the Union's most famous, and infamous, men like Sheridan, Milroy, Grant, Sherman and Custer. Hand masterfully weaves together primary and secondary sources with his own enjoyable, readable prose. This book is a must read for all Civil War buffs. Enjoy!!!

Book Description
This book contains graphic war, survival, love and humor. It is for readers who want to know what it was like to serve in Vietnam. For twenty-seven years after serving in Vietnam I suffered from Delayed Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. In 1983 a psychiatrist, told me I needed to get into group therapy. I declined immediately because I didn't want to talk about my 'Nam experience. She told me I should record my nightmares & flashbacks; and to dig down deep and pull out all the stressful memories. I did this, and the more I wrote, the more I hurt and the more I hurt, the more I cried. I wrote for two years and began to feel better about myself and about Vietnam. I had so many notes I decided to try and write them into a book. I didn't have to do any research. This is how GUNNER'S WINGS came to be. I wrote this story about the helicopter side of the war. Names, places and dates have been changed. If characters in this book resemble anyone living or dead, it is purely coincidently.

Delayed Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome .......2005-10-26
This is basted on a TRUE story. A first-person account of the fierce fighting in Vietnam and the bitter inner tension it created, "Gunner's Wings" is a testament to the anguish thousands of American soldiers endured during and after the conflict..... Capt. Sonny Abbott was there and lived to write about it................. . . Abbott enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany until 1963. H was in the Honor Guard at Fort Benning, Ga. and served at President John F. Kennedy's funeral service. He later became an air traffic controller and was dispatched to Vietnam in 1965. He attempted to pursue his lifelong interest in music before Delayed Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome was triggered. Writing became a way to cope with his condition.

Book Description
The books' setting is in the early years of the Vietnam War, with Sergeant Clifton A. Murray, who's in the United States Army. He is a professional soldier and on his second tour of duty in Vietnam. Being well trained with his eleven years of active duty, he is a well seasoned combat veteran. His primary job is being in charge of the door gunners on the Huey Helicopter Gunship and Medevacs; based at Quang Tri, South Vietnam. Due to his arrogances toward his subordinates, and the officers who flies the choppers he is not well liked by any of the men. His willingness to kill without discretion, weather or not the enemy are armed or in surrender he has been taken off flight status and restricted to quarters awaiting charges for killing three enemy POWs. But tonight things well change. On this night he has found a way to sneak onboard and fly as the door gunner in the right door of a Medevac chopper. Un-knowing to Sergeant Murray, the pilot and co-pilot who are pressing the charges against him are flying the ill-faded chopper. The Medevac mission is actually on a search and rescue mission for twp downed Air Force pilots, some 90 miles into North Vietnam. It doesn't take the two medevac pilots long after take-off to realize that in the early morning darkness Murray has sneaked on board. What follows on the remainder of their ill-faded flight, the mission is doomed and the crew members are put into a very precarious situation that will thoroughly test each man physically, mentally and spiritually; and also the unexpected outcome will text the reader in the same ways.

For kids who are 15, the Vietnam War happened 20 years before they were born--ancient history. But for many adults over 40, that conflict is seared into their memories as a crucial turning point in their lives. In Sonny's War Valerie Hobbs has mostly got the home-front picture right--the initial patriotic enthusiasm, the tense waiting for letters, the growing confusion and revulsion toward the war, the passion of the peace movement, the bitterness of the returning soldiers.
The story of the young man who goes off to Vietnam and returns forever emotionally damaged has become part of literary folklore, but is still a terrible reality in our society. Here Hobbs tells it through the voice of 14-year-old Corin, who loves and admires her strong big brother, Sonny. When he is drafted, Corin and her recently widowed mother wave him off to war as bravely as they can. But then Lawrence arrives to substitute for Corin's history teacher. Lawrence is young, tall, with long blonde hair, blue work shirts, and Jesus sandals. He is strongly opposed to the war, but lets his students read and debate about it. During the noon hour he stands silently outside the cafeteria windows beside a sign that reads "War is not the answer." It's not long before Corin is head over heels in impossible love, until one night she follows Lawrence to a peace rally that changes her feelings toward him. Those feelings grow even more troubling when Sonny comes home unbearably changed, in this historical novel that is newly relevant for today's young people. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
After her father dies, fourteen-year-old Corin needs her brother, Sonny, more than ever. Sonny is quiet but he's a great listener, and Cory knows where she can always find him - in the garage, working on his car. Life isn't so bad as long as Sonny is around. But thousands of miles from the sleepy little town of Ojala, California, where all the kids can think about is partying and racing, a war is going on, and Sonny is just the right age to be drafted. When Sonny tells Cory he's going to Vietnam, she is devastated. What are she and her mom supposed to do while he's gone? What if he doesn't come back at all? The new substitute history teacher is the only one who seems to understand. Cory has never met anybody like Lawrence. He's young, he's handsome, and he's passionately against the war that took her brother away. As Cory turns to Lawrence for the comfort Sonny once gave, she finds herself wanting much more than Lawrence could ever provide.
Valerie Hobbs eloquently depicts the feelings of loss, betrayal, and love felt by a young woman amid the confusion and excitement of the 1960s.
Customer Reviews:
Generic teenage story.......2004-02-16
The events of this book unraveled realistically with some good and sometimes great descriptions but I wish the author would have included more `events'. Most of this book is spiel about Cory's thoughts that don't seem to have anything to do with where she is or what she is doing. This book was easy to read but was at times difficult slogging through generic teenage thoughts.
Sonnys War.......2003-09-07
This gal writes with great feeling for all ages.Sonny is a brother to many who have lived through any war.His young sister's feeling are the tender feelings of many young sisters in war time.Such a really good read.I really enjoyed it and all Valerie Hobbs books.
