Change "other views" .......2007-10-09
Before I bought the book, I read the reviews, but what really got me interested was the "other views" or pages from the book below the book title, you know the ones that you look at to get a better idea what's in the book. Well it shows a page with "glazed cabinets" but there is no such page in the actual book. I was really disappointed just because I expected it to be there if it was right below the book.
Not for a beginner.......2007-09-05
Not enough detail info or "example" pictures to please me. When one is just "breaking in" to designing more before/after pics would help.
great pictures, good advice.......2007-08-18
The Designed to Sell book offers the same frank commentary, sage advice, and money-saving tips as the TV show. Many large full-color photos are a special treat and a great resource for both fans of the show and homeowners looking to stage their property for sale.
The book could have been strengthened by a conclusion (noticeably absent) and also more before-and-after pictures; sometimes only the "after" was shown.
If you've seen the show...........2007-08-14
You don't need to read the book. There wasn't anything new or insightful to be garnered from reading the book. I was hoping for some more in depth tips that the show doesn't have time to cover.
Always keep eyes open and mind questioning.......2007-07-12
The book, like the show, is invaluable whether you will actually sell your house or not. More than one "seller" has changed from seller to keeper or rental owner because of how well the renovation turned out, and that is okay, too. The principal idea is to take a long, hard look at your dear little abode and see it more as others may see it. Clutter abounds, dirt has made itself at home in hard to reach places, repairs have been put off, etcetera! This book, like the program, will help you to sort out these problems, but many of the costs are not realistic: they hide some subterfuge.
Just for starters, I have never seen a cost entered for labor. Where the program is concerned, we know, or should know, that all labor is provided by the crew, who are on contract to the show. Furthermore, the work for the show is always completed on time and professionally well done. In real life, however, we have the problem of finding qualified, honest and trustworthy contractors/workmen who will charge us fairly for a job done well. None of this is dealt with in the program or in the book. Perhaps that part is "another story?"
If anyone goes into a remodeling/renovation project with only $2000 to spend, they had better have some talented and willing family or friends as well as being able to do some/most of the work themselves. As for the "new" furniture, it would be more helpful if the sources were mentioned. It is quite acceptable to purchase furniture from outlets and "used" stores at serious savings. However, these sources are not always available everywhere, and that, in all fairness, should be pointed out. This is my only criticism of the show and the book. The ideas are there and the needed jobs layed out, but the money is not realistic. Still, the book is worth the time to read it and the money to buy it - used.

Worth Every Penny, Invaluable Advice For Mingling & Making New Friends!.......2007-08-25
I am a friendly, professional, outgoing person, who isn't shy around friends, but put me in a room full of people I have never met before, and like so many others, I become a complete -- "Minglephobe"!
I freeze up and immediately take physical inventory of all possible exits while the mind is grasping to retrieve all possible excuses that might be believable enough to give me the reprieve I need to make a quick and stealthy exit. Okay, okay, I'm not that bad, but those thoughts do run through my mind.
I've also recently realized that I get completely tongue tied with opening lines anytime I approach someone new and want to start a conversation.
I have purchased several books to help overcome this "phobia" and this by far, is the best of all the books.
I would highly recommend "The Art of Mingling." Even if you don't want to become an expert on mingling, this author provides some really wonderful insight, suggestions and methods for approaching strangers, some great conversation starters, tips on how to approach groups of people, and even how to get out of a conversation that is not going well.
I don't understand how the reviewer that said he was trying to improve his social skills found no value to this book. My girlfriend, who is one of those super-friendly people that can make friends with a room full of strangers in 15 minutes-flat also read and loved this book. She said it had some wonderful tips and she can't wait to try out some of the advice.
I think "The Art of Mingling" is an invaluable tool, and I would recommend this book to anyone that really wants some real-world, applicable solutions for making new friends.
NOT WORTH THE $, HERE ARE SOME ALTERNATIVES.......2007-07-29
refining my social abilities is something that always interests me. this book is a good read if you are extremely frightful and awkward in social encounters. however, it provides little useful information for those of us who have social skills, but are looking to improve them.
instead, i recommend:
- how to win friends and influence people -- by d. carniege. this text is the basis for all related books. in my humble opinion, it is the most widely cited and accepted novel in the self-improvement genre.
- how to talk to anyone -- by lowndes. the first half of that book is quite solid. however, in the secod half, the author discusses topics such as 'how to talk to celebrities', and thus loses focus and credibility. still though, a solid read.
- the friendship factor -- by mcginnis. if you dont get turned off by the religious references, the book is amazing. i opt to skip over any passage that goes on to ramble about jesus being the most socially apt individual. again, if you dont get turned off by the christianity aspect, it is a solid text.
Can't read her own book to save her life.......2007-06-20
Ms. Martinet has to be one of the worst readers I've ever heard "professionally." Even if her book were more clever (and it's not, studded as it is with chestnuts like "imagine everyone at the party in their underwear") her delivery would suck all the life out of it.
Why didn't anyone tell her? For crying out loud, she can't even pronounce paté
Breaking the Ice.......2007-05-09
Learn how to initiate small talk with this playful guide to social etiquette. Anyone looking for ways to improve their communication skills will benefit from this book.
Small Talk 101: Practical & lighthearted guide.......2007-04-20
Author Jeanne Martinet pens a playful guide to breaking ice and initiating small talk. These are useful social skills in settings that often make people feel awkward. The Art of Mingling offers a buffet of tips to choose from; graze at your leisure and try them out. Some are over the top and others are clearly designed just for women in mind.
Not just for "social cripples" but for anyone looking to improve their communication skills in the art of small talk, a talent for which can yield a big impact.

Book Description
"Listen to those millions of women runners. Listen to their quiet breaths as they talk in predawn pairs, before the rest of the family wakes-- the lessons and questions they share to the rhythm of steady footsteps. 'I never thought I could...' 'I feel so much stronger...' 'I'm ready to take on a new challenge...'
Women develop a special sorority on the roads. This bond is an understanding based on acceptance, an appreciation of how far they have come, a knowing wink that says how much is yet to be gained. And so they talk and share and grow-- and run. Singly and in groups, swiftly and slowly, they run."
--Dagny Scott

Lots of information.......2006-11-06
I've just completed an 8 week beginning running program. I bought this book to read just before I embarked on the program. The book was an easy read; it has information that every beginning runner should know. I'll be keeping this book to refer to for years to come.
Here's what I found good about the book:-
1. Nuggets of information that I as a beginning runner won't have known to look for
2. Relevant to women and sometimes both sexes
3. Stories of real life women and how they got hooked on and what has kept them going - I found those inspirational
Here's what I didn't like about the book (therefore I'm giving it 4 stars):-
1. I understand that taking up running is good for you and all, helping you to maintain weight, good for your heart etc. but really, I feel that the authors sometimes go overboard with the accolades. As a beginning runner, I dont want to feel intimidated but at the same time, I dont want to feel as if I'm joining a cult.
All in all, I like the book and I'm keeping it but strangely enough, I feel uncomfortable reading about "us runners". I like to run but I also don't want to be part of an "elite group"
Great book! I would buy it through Amazon again........2006-03-10
I had a wonderful experience buying this fabulous book from Amazon. It arrived as promised and is definately the best book geared towards women for running. I have looked at a couple other books like this and they didn't even compare!
There is a runner in all of us, even YOU!.......2004-03-19
Although I had been working out for years, my stamina for running was just not there. I researched several running books, and this was by far the best. If you are a beginner, and need the basics, get this book. Age should not be a factor, but as advised-have a physical before you embark on running. I am physically fit, I had never ran, and I did not start until I was 41. There are women who write that they did not even begin until they were in their 60's! The program instructs on how to incorporate running into your workout, starting with as little as 2 minutes! You can do that right? It covers how to choose the right running shoe, how to avoid injury, and what you need to eat in order to maintain stamina for the long haul. Carb's are important here, take note. Dagny covers it all, and speaks from experience. She even covers overcoming the initial "embarassement" of running for the first time, and how to enter your first 5K and finish. I love this book, and still refer to it.
Disappointed.......2003-10-31
Personally, I was quite disappointed in the content of this book. I was getting back into running after a several year hiatus and bought this book to inspire me to a new level of fitness. I found the information to be geared towards the beginner and quickly "outgrew" it.
What a great motivator!.......2002-12-10
While training for my third marathon, I picked up this book to find some new training ideas. I couldn't put it down! It covers all facets of women's running - beginning to long distance, pregnancy, nutrition, balancing family and/or job with running and motivating factors. I used the charts, stretches and training ideas. I've recommended it to countless friends and often discussed ideas from the book while on long runs with training partners. Not only did I get some practical training advice, but I got a new resource for my running.

Customer Reviews:
If Not "Irresistible", At Least Valuable.......2000-09-01
The authors suggest "31 skills to make yourself irresistible to any company" and the 31 are indeed important skills to have mastered. If for whatever reasons you are not now currently "irresistible" to your employer, I strongly urge you to purchase, absorb, and digest this book's excellent content. There are others who will also derive substantial benefit from this book: Those in larger organizations who recruit and hire and/or who have supervisory responsibility for others, those launching a new company who can ill afford to make a mistake when hiring a key person, and those now entering the job market who wish to increase and enhance their appeal to prospective employers. In essence, if employees do not add value, they have no value.
"Great job".......2000-02-12
This is an outstanding book. It helped me analyze my strengths and the areas I need to work on to get ahead. Most self-help books are too academic or "motivational". This book seems to reflect what real live corporations are looking for. The writers apparently are not egghead psychologists, but are common sense business people who have successfully implemented competency development systems in major companies. The simple, practical tools for self assessment and career planning included in the book are great. I'm surprised that more organizations haven't adopted this approach. Other non-management employees like myself who are trying to better ourselves would certainly appreciate it.
A Highly Useful Guide!.......1999-12-07
The Value-Added Employee contains some excellent tools to help create specific development plans for people at all levels. The book provides the reader with an understanding of "competencies" and job competency models, concepts that have become popular in recent years with many corporations. Thirty-one competencies are featured, organized into three clear groupings: competencies that are related to working with people, business-related competencies and self-management competencies. As a manager, I partcularly appreciated the suggestions on how I can help develop or strengthen the competency for those I coach. This is a practical book, more like a workbook than a traditional book. HR departments will also find it helpful.

Book Description
Philosophy majors and GPA-challenged students, rejoice! According to career guru Donald Asher, what you major in or how well you do in college are not indicators of future career success. In HOW TO GET ANY JOB WITH ANY MAJOR, Asher debunks the myth that only brainy students with specialized majors find high-paying, visible careers after college. The truth is that plenty of average folks with general, liberal arts majors have gone on to find lucrative and fulfilling careersand anyone can do it by following Asher's advice. If you're just graduating, you'll learn to promote the skills you already have, recognize how employers hire and what skills they value most, and get influential people to help you. Or, if you're already in the work world, you'll learn to use internships, credential programs, post-baccalaureates, and grad school to jump-start a stalled career. Offering innovative ideas to help launch the perfect career, HOW TO GET ANY JOB WITH ANY MAJOR is the new job-hunter's handbook to success.
Customer Reviews:
5-star book with misleading joke title.......2006-10-12
ANY job with ANY major, huh? I agree with everyone else that the book merits 5 Stars, but only coincidentally, because it has little to do with what one might think, from reading the title. The world is NOT wide open to you if you have a liberal arts degree. As you would suspect, one way or another, you will have to do what everyone else does for so many fields: get another degree. Alan Greenspan was only a music major, the back cover crows, huh? Yeah, Wikipedia says he studied the clarinet for two years. And then he got a BS in Economics, a MS in Economics, and a Ph D in Economics. Somehow, I'd suspected as much. Along these lines, it could just as easily have been entitled, "How to Get Hired as a Surgeon if You're Only a High School Dropout." Well, first you get your GED, and then...
It would also have been much more useful if the author had gone through the Occupational Outlook Handbook and listed those careers that *normally* require a specific degree, but where he knew that, in certain situations, hiring exceptions are made for non-specialists who were somehow able to learn enough on their own (and how they did this).
Yes, some good examples are in the book, but only as motivators - one still won't know exactly which fields are closed off to nonmajors, and which aren't. Any Job With Any Major - yeah, right!
Outstanding.......2006-07-31
I really like this book. I work with liberal arts students -- and have for 19 years -- and I think this is probably the best and most practical book they could read, especially as they get ready to transition, but even before. Asher is a good writer and includes lots of stories of real people (case studies). He says what I say all the time, only better.
Failure to launch?.......2006-04-11
After I stopped laughing/sobbing because this title is much too applicable than chance should allow, I started reading what has become a very great book! This book won't find a job for you, but it will give you a tremendous amount of help in finding a career. From the onset, you will be warned that this is not a book to be passively absorbed. This book challenges you to analyze your beliefs, your values, and your skills; which is then combined with dozens of other soul searching exercises aimed at getting recent graduates or soon to be grads going in the best suited direction. This amazing resource is well researched and careful not to be pushy or authoritative in in approach, it merely guides the reader through their own soul-searching process. This one of the most practical and applicable books that any college graduate, basement bound or not, can read!
College student says two thumbs up!.......2006-04-07
I've never reviewed anything on Amazon before, but considering how great this book is, I decided it deserved it.
I'm a college junior who has been scouring the many rows of career-related books at her campus library for weeks now as part of my quest to figure out what the best career path for me would be. And after reading (or at least skimming) 30-ish books, this one has proved to be the most helpful and informative by far.
Asher's book will not only show how to better figure out what your values are so that you can choose a career to meet all of your "threshold needs," but also help you figure out how to conduct an effective job search once you've made your choice.
This book is the total package- if you're only going to buy one resource to help with your career choice/job hunt, make it this one! Trust me, it's way better than all of that "What Color is Your Parachute?" stuff.
Comprehensive, Extremely Practical Book.......2006-02-07
Donald Asher is brilliant, and that's all there is to it! This book, especially, is a valuable resource for any liberal arts major and for any career changer at any age. The sheer volume of useful information is amazing, given the book's moderate size. Every pertinent topic is included, such as choosing careers that would be good fits to you, doing informational job research, strategies for finding the job you want (things EVERYONE should know, but no one tells you!), advice on resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, interviews, etc. This book literally includes everything you need to know, in just the right amount of detail, and all of it is very practical and immediately useful - you won't be disappointed!

Basic but important information.......2006-07-04
I think this book reminds and reinforces a lot of basic information that people should already know but tend to not put into practice in the real world. Its a good book, and worth the price for the reminders and the little tips.
Nothing New Here.......1999-09-30
It's not a bad book. Well written and easy to read. But it's all been said before in other books and other places. You'd be better off spending yor money elsewhere.
Going on a job interview? Read this book first!.......1999-05-14
Take it from a Wharton grad and fourth generation Wall Streeter - the First Five Minutes is a must-read. Invaluable for both the recent graduate and the "old pro".
A Great Book!.......1998-12-27
I found this book to be very useful as a college student who will be looking for a job in the business world in the next few years. I found that the author presents the information in a very easy-to-read format, enabling the book to serve as a quick reference guide to various business (and social) settings as needed. I plan to keep the book on the bookshelf in my college dorm room, and I recommend that all do the same! The book is a solid 5-stars and I hope the author chooses to write another book in the near future!
Less then 1 star.......1998-11-19
This book was a waste of time & money with nothing new or even interesting. It contains information that JHS student would know
Amazon.com
When liars are being accused of something, they'll stay calm because they're working on their rebuttal; this is why detectives were suspicious of O.J. Simpson when he didn't express outrage when accused of murdering his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman. Never Be Lied to Again is bursting with tested tips like this for quickly determining when you're being boondoggled. Body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, and word choice can all reveal when someone is lying, says psychologist David J. Lieberman, and he includes 46 of these "clues to deception" to help you, including tricks for framing questions without putting others on the defense. Once you use your newly honed "human lie detector" skills to figure out if you're being lied to, you can then dig for the truth using the specific, influential words and body postures that Lieberman suggests. Written with flair and humor, Never Be Lied to Again is designed to help you get the upper hand in any situation, whether you're trying to figure out if your spouse is cheating on you or if you suspect your coworkers are cooking the books.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
It's difficult to have honest communication in a world where people bend the truth to fit their needs. Even more difficult is confronting a suspected liar in an open, forthright manner. In Never Be Lied to Again, human behaviorist Dr. Lieberman coaches listeners to face unfaithful lovers, colleagues, and employees. Lieberman introduces the tape and the remainder is read by male and female voices in varied tones. These different voices pinpoint numerous verbal and physical clues that will help you detect when people are lying; "attack sequences" and "silver bullets" allow you to initiate discussions with the guilty party. Although much of the information is geared to personal rather than professional situations, this tape is still a good resource for starting uncomfortable conversations. (Running time: 1.5 hours, one cassette) --Sharon Griggins

Customer Reviews:
A painful read with some useful information.......2007-09-14
This was a tough book to get through and failed to introduce much information that I didn't already know. The writing style was painful due to the authors choice to alternate the pronouns "he" and "she". He did this to avoid sounding sexist but pointing it out made it even more irritating. Most of the examples used were nap inspiring: "You think a student was cheating on her exam." Or unrealistic: "You suspect someone of selling you a puppy with a bad heart." Lieberman knows what he is talking about and the cover of this book looks great but the inside presentation could use a major overhaul. You don't have to read "Never Be Lied To Again" to know I am telling the truth.
Wonderful.......2007-09-05
In the past two weeks it has saved me over $200 at the mecahnics (I used one of the techniques in the book and found out he was lying to me about my brakes AND transmission) amd it has probably saved me a lot of heartache. (It turns out that a guy I had just met was married although he told me otherwise. He confessed to being married after about ten minutes when I used one of the advanced techniques on him) I'm not kidding--this stuff works like magic. This book could not have come at a better time. (Although I don't beleive in coincidences)
All in all,of the books I've read over the years, this is the most significant without adoubt. I can't say enough about it.
Great Book!.......2007-09-04
Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune
Fun and useful.......2007-08-07
I have mixed emotions about this book. On one hand, it does cover a lot of signs that you are being lied to, and if you know about them you will pay attention and will be more likely to figure out the truth. On the other hand, some methods for finding out the truth are really disturbing because the author advocates using lies and manipulations for discovering the truth. However, I would still recommend reading it. You don't have to use every suggestion in it - use what feels right for you. I especially found the first part of the book useful - this is where the author lists all the signs of lying (and there are a LOT of them, I think that he probably covered them all). The second part lists the aforementioned "strategies". All in all, I found the book fun to read and very useful, and it is up to the reader to chose to use the book defensively or offensively.

Customer Reviews:
fantastic resource for every parent - Five stars.......2007-04-15
My daughter loves reading and reads everything, including small print on cereal boxes, so recently I had to deal with an issue of trying to help her go through the ocean of books and find the best ones.
This book is so far the best guide I found, very well organized - by age group, genre and subject; it includes short synopsys for each book, notes to parents and further reading recommendations. I am glad I found it and I would recommend it to every parent - whether their kids love the books or love to hate them.
Daughter now "thinks" she likes reading.......2007-03-27
My 10 year old daughter "thinks" she hates to read. She has read several of the suggested books & has loved them. Her school requires her to read so many books, of her choice, every grading period. Before receiving this book, she would start reading a book & then stop saying that the book was boring. This is a must-get for any child who "thinks" they hate to read
I Don't Hate to Read, But this Book Rocks!!.......2003-02-10
When I first saw this book, I just knew I would love it. I am a HUGE reader, and there's no way I hate to read. But I liked this book anyway. You will find 125 books in here, which will appeal to reluctant readers. I've read several of the books featured in this book, and I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them. There are several parts to the book: books for 5-8 years old, books for 7-10 years old, books for 8-12 years old, and books for ages 10 and up. Each book featured has a picture, an exerpt from the book, a summery of the book, reasons why the book would appeal to reluctant readers, who might like it, types of illustrations, and so much more. There are even more reccomended books in the back. This is truly a fantastic resource, whethere you hate to read or not.
